THE mineral resources of New England fall almost entirely in the non-metallic group. Metal produc-tion is so insignificant that no separate figures are obtainable; whatever production there may be is in-cluded in the miscellaneous group. The non-metallic industries, however, are of considerable importance, the production of the six states in 1925 approaching $55,000,000. As indicated in the accompanying table compiled from Bureau of Mines statistics, the chief mineral prod-ucts are structural materials, such as stone, clay products and lime. It is, significant that. the New En-gland States take the lead in several of these important commodities: Massachusetts stands first as a granite producer, with Vermont second, the New England, States producing 45 per cent of the United States total. In marble production Vermont stands first, Vermont .and Massachusetts together producing 38 per cent of the United States total. New Hampshire is second and Maine third in feldspar production, Vermont second in both slate and talc, and New Hampshire first as a mica mining state. In nine instances New England .States rank either first, second or third in the order of production of important non-metallic minerals. What prospect is there for future expansion of these industries? They are all substantial in character, the minerals as a whole are essential in industry, and there is little prospect of a diminishing demand for them. A every important step in the direction of expansion is to lower production costs. The National Research Coun-cil has determined that research throughout the country is now being directed mainly toward this end, and the New England mining industries must stand in the fore-front in this movement if they are to compete success-fully. Cost reduction may be accomplished by wider use of the most - approved equipment and methods. Progress in the metallurgy of iron and steel has far outstripped the progress along similar lines in the non-metals.

THE zinc deleading processes at the Parral and Santa Barbara mills are described separately to provide a basis for comparison. Although the two procedures are fundamentally alike, there are some differences in application to meet specific conditions. The Asarco mill at Parral in the State of Chihuahua is a flotation plant treating 1450 metric tons per day of complex sulphide copper-lead-zinc ores. In general, the procedure used for selective separation of the minerals into a copper, a lead, and a zinc concentrate follows the usual practice. First, a bulk copper-lead concentrate is floated and then separated into a final copper and a final lead concentrate by the sulphurous acid process. A small tonnage of high grade gravity lead concentrate is tabled from the bulk copper-lead cleaner tailing before it is reground so as to avoid undesirable over-grinding and sliming of this portion of the lead mineral. Next, a zinc concentrate is floated from the lead rougher tailing and, as described later, is separated into a final lead product and a final zinc concentrate. Finally, the zinc rougher tailing receives a strong scavenger float to remove all recoverable middling values for regrinding and return to the flotation circuits. The slime is separated from the scavenger flotation product, and only the sand portion goes to the regrind section. The minerals in the separated slime are extremely resistant to all methods of selective separation and pose one of the major problems awaiting solution. Nevertheless, the slime shows a profit when mixed with either the lead or the zinc concentrate, except when metal prices are very low, so it is accepted as a final product for lack of a more profitable method of handling it. Trona ore at the Westvaco, Wyo., mine of FMC Corp. has been obtained by room-and-pillar methods since the mine began operation. The flat- lying, 10-ft thick trona (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H2O) is covered by 1500 ft of weak shale and sandstone, and extraction of pillars on the retreat quite often throws large amounts of weight onto development workings. Weak shales in the roof and floor fail rapidly, and the mine ribs slough to such an extent that mining often becomes very difficult. When this occurs, efficiency goes down, costs go up, and the risk to men and machinery increases greatly. Difficult mining conditions in the early '60s forced a re-evaluation of all presently known mining techniques in bedded deposits. Many room-and-pillar mining plans were compared with the system in use at that time, but none of them offered a better solution to the roof control problem. Longwall techniques were also seriously considered, but machinery was not available that would cut the hard trona seam and still maintain the productivity obtained from room-and-pillar sections. However, since roof control in the longwall methods appeared to be more satisfactory than that found in room-and-pillar techniques it was believed that a new technique using the longwall principle and based on rock mechanics should be tried rather than previously known pillaring methods.

Roof bolts are the primary means of supplemental support in coal mines and are widely used in other mines. Presently, post installation loads are measured infrequently on only about 10% of the bolts by using standard torque wrenches that limit accuracy to about ± 30%. Because mine roof bolts are long, slender, non-uniformly sized, roughly forged, placed in a difficult environment, and subject to severe bending on installation, researchers have been unable to use ultrasonic reflection techniques to measure strain. A complete measurement system has now been assembled by the US Bureau of Mines, Denver Research Center. Obstacles such as bolt preparation, transducer mounting, reliable reflection, and calibration have been dealt with. The seemingly simple concept of measuring the time of flight of an ultrasonic pulse to a reflector is actually complex due to the need to measure to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.) accuracy, the sensitivity of velocity to temperature, and stress, and the stability required to make measurements over several years.

The Project Independence Evaluation System (PIES) is a complex evaluation, forecasting, and analysis system which represents the U.S. energy production, conversion, transportation and consumption activities. The system includes various models: An econometrically estimated energy demand model, used to evaluate the final demand functions for energy commodities ; A collection of supply models, used to evaluate the cost curves or supply curves for domestic crude oil, natural gas, coal ; An integrating model used to describe energy conversion and transportation activities and to calculate prices which equate energy supply and demand in each market. PIES has been used to generate conditional forecasts of the 1980, 1985, and 1990 states of the energy system--forecasts conditional upon the world oil prices, the energy policy environment, and other uncertainties. Scenarios have been structured to separately examine conservation initiatives, domestic energy supply enhancements, an extensive electrification strategy, and oil and natural gas well -head price regulation. This paper presents the basic model, discusses its use for examining policy options, and describes several forecast results. The paper draws heavily upon work completed for the 1976 National Energy Outlook, published by the Federal Energy Administration.

To assist the mining industry in attacking problems of water control, the U. S. Geological Survey has begun a program of research in mining hydrology. In certain fundamental respects water control is similar to development of water supplies from wells or to the drainage of agricultural lands, as many of the tools developed in recent years for quantitative ground-water problems are applicable, with modification, to mine-water problems. In 1952 a 30-day pumping test conducted jointly by the Eureka Corp. Ltd. and the Defense Minerals Exploration Agency provided an opportunity to gain knowledge concerning water movements around a flooded mine shaft. The methods of analyzing the data may be used as a guide for the evaluation of similar problems elsewhere.

IRON ore reserves of Lone Star Steel Co. cover 56,000 acres in the north basin of the East Texas geosynclinal area near Daingerfield. Ore is almost wholly restricted to the Weches formation of middle Eocene Age. Its resistance to erosion has created the hilly topography of the East Texas area. The ore deposits, in the upper portion of the hills, are usually overlain with residual sand and clay overburden less than 15 ft thick. The ore formation consists of inter- bedded shallow ocean sediments ranging from pure greensand to fine-grained sands and clays containing a maximum of 70 pct limonite, or siderite, and varying from 2 to 100 ft thick. The iron in this ore originated as iron silicate or greensand in the ocean sediments, and the ore mineral siderite was formed when meteoric waters redeposited the iron under reducing conditions as a carbonate. With weathering and progressive erosion much of this siderite was later oxidized and altered to limonite - yellow to dark brown hydrous iron oxides formed into nodules up to 18 in., embedded in a sandy clay and weathered greensand matrix. Beneath the water table the siderite zone consists of interbedded shale and greensands with thin ledges and nodules of siderite. Lone Star Steel Co. has proven a 75-year supply of ore, and exploration of reserves and acquisition of new property is not complete.

(communication to the Secretary*).-When asked to discuss Mr. Feild's paper, I felt most highly complimented to have the privilege of commenting on such a worthy and needed piece of apparatus. In consideration of the importance of the viscosity of blast-furnace slags and the relation existing between the' melting point of a slag and its viscosity, the introduction of this apparatus should be a welcome means or assistant in the study of the physical properties of a slag. Up to the present time, it is A fact that this side of the practical working of the blast furnace has been sadly neglected by those investigating slags. It is easily seen that the fluidity of a slag is of as great importance as its melting point. It is not necessarily true that a slag having a low melting point will have a correspondingly low viscosity or be highly fluid. For example, a slag having a melting point of 1,100° C. may have to be superheated to, say,1,300° C., in order to have as high a fluidity as another slag whose melting point is, say, 1,250° C. The latter in this case would be the more economical. This point has been brought out very nicely by Mr. Feild. Before discussing this paper further, I think it will be well to outline some of the points, a discussion of which may be in order:

A CONSIDERABLE number of experiments in recent years have definitely established the fact that the internal friction or mechanical hysteresis of a metal under cyclic stress is a property that is highly "structure sensitive." Because of this fact, it has been suggested that an observa-tion of this property, which often is referred to as "clamping capacity," might he a useful indicator of structural changes taking place when a metal or alloy is subjected to any of a number of metallurgical treatments. Damping capacity is of interest to both engineer and metallurgist, but from a rather different point of view, and the information that each desires from such observations is of a different nature. The metallurgist is in search of various external indications of changes taking place in the interior of a metal; changes which are in themselves not directly observa-ble. Even if the observed phenomenon cannot be explained in funda-mental terms, it may be empirically related to certain characteristics of the material and prove of real value in research. Internal friction or mechanical hysteresis occupies such a position, and, although it is not well understood in terms of basic metallic theory, an observation of its changes can serve in a very useful capacity. Of course, there is nothing new in the measurement of damping, but the use of this property in metallurgical research constitutes a vast field, which has received all too little attention. The present work is essentially of an exploratory nature in this field and is an attempt to evaluate the process as a research tool. The phenomenon of age-hardening was chosen as a typical example of a structural change and one method of measuring damping was examined in considerable detail.

DURING the past few years there has been considerable activity in prospecting for oil and gas in several parts of western Washington. From time to time seepages of oil or emanations of gas have been reported from various places. Several companies have been organized for the purpose of drilling, but only a part of these have actually begun operations. In certain localities very small seepages of oil occur, but up to the present time no oil or gas in commercial quantities has been obtained. In order to determine the conditions which may be favorable or unfavorable 'to the occurrence of petroleum it becomes necessary to know the character and extent of the geological formations in which such deposits might occur. In other regions where producing wells have been developed it is possible to know what formations contain the oil mind what structural conditions influence its concentration in reservoirs or zones. It is usually possible to determine those strata which contained the a materials from which the petroleum may have been derived and also the position and distribution of the more porous sandstone belts into which it may have collected. Detailed stratigraphic surveys, may even determine the depth at, which a certain known oil-bearing zone may be tapped at any particular place. It is also possible to recognize those formations which are presumably barren of oil, as well as those which are absolutely so.

Geologic studies during development at Copper Flat were directed at acquiring the necessary information in evaluating a low-grade porphyry copper deposit. In addition to the geologic mapping and core-logging of a typical exploration project, these studies included: - careful checks on the sampling and assaying, - selection of representative samples used to establish the recoverable amounts of precious metals in the ore, - examination of underground workings driven to provide samples both for metallurgical testing and for assay comparison, - evaluation of plant site and waste dump areas as non-material, including a placer examination of the tailings disposal area, and location of an adequate water supply. All these investigation were carefully documented to provide the necessary data both for the engineering design and, more importantly, for the feasibility studies required for successfully financing the project.

VOLUMES have been written about the organizing genius of American industrialists. American methods of production are being studied by the manufacturers of other nations to ascertain the prac-ticability to foreign adaptation. Mass production and the mechanization of industry have become terms of popular understanding and significance. Our people think, act and talk in terms of economic nomenclature. Under these circumstances is it not a matter of supreme importance that Americans themselves should make an analysis of their own situation? National supremacy has been but a transitory event. Wealth has had no fixed abode, and commerce has followed no permanently established route. One hundred and fifty years, viewed from the abstract idea of time, is but a moment in the fact of continuous or successive existence, yet it measures. the cycle that has witnessed the growth of America from a struggling embryonic union of thirteen colonies estab-lished along the Atlantic seaboard to the nation of un-rivalled proportions, vast wealth, huge enterprises and productive energy that now exists beneath the protec-tion of and renders allegiance to the flag that but then had been created. To appreciate fully the significance of what has occurred, it is necessary that there should bee an understanding of the basic factors that have con-tributed so largely to the realization of our present situation. Among the most important were: First, the establishment of a government that was founded upon the principle of affording the widest pos-sible opportunity for individual effort and accom-plishment. Second, there existed a virgin territory of vast extent, endowed by nature with elements of potential wealth far exceeding that possessed by any other like area upon the globe.

INTRODUCTION In this paper we present preliminary results of a research program in site characterization methodology. We are interested in under- standing the response of discontinuous rock to mechanical, hydrologic, and thermal loadings. To carry out such a study we selected a field site with simple geology, uniform distribution of lithologies, and easily verifiable boundary conditions on temperature, fluid flow and stresses. The spatial distribution of fractures at the site was established and tests were conducted to determine the temperature field, hydrology, rock-mass properties, and in situ stresses. As part of the study selected borehole instruments were compared to assess their performance and reliability. SITE GEOLOGY The study area is in the eastern part of South Table Mountain, a mesa near Golden, Colo. The exposed cap rock is a single lava flow of uniform thickness (6-7 m) that rests on the clastic sediments of the Denver Formation (Van Horn, 1976). The surface of the cap rock (N. 75º E., 3º S.) is topographically featureless and slopes south- southeast; drainage is predominantly downdip and punctuated by occasional contact springs. The age of the lava flow is 64-65 m.y., or early Paleocene. Paleo- botanic evidence confirms the upper part of the Denver Formation as Paleocene (Van Horn, 1976). "Rapid-rock" analyses of core samples from the lava flow at three depths (0.2, 3.3, and 5.8 m) suggest a uniform chemical composition throughout with an increase in the Fe2O3/ FeO ratio (1.05 to 1.60) with increasing depth, reflecting the existence of a perched water table in the lava flow, To identify the rock

THE first person to investigate intensively the vast field of surface phenomena and capillary effects was the eminent English scientist, Lord Rayleigh (1842-1919), who laid down most of the fundamentals of this subject. This work was greatly amplified by Irving Langmuir,1 who, in connection with research for the General Electric Co., spent 25 years on the study of the surface chemistry of films, finally receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 1932 in recognition of his work. At present, William Harkins,2 of the University of Chicago, is the world's foremost authority on surface-tension measurement and his independent work, when combined with that of Langmuir, resulted in the orientation con-cept of solubility and surface activity, which is now an important funda-mental in chemistry. The theory laid down by these men was first applied to practical considerations regarding petroleum reservoirs by F. E. Bartell,3 of the University of Michigan, in connection with an American Petroleum Institute research grant. The latest and most advanced application of Bartell's work is contained in an article published in 1935 by Allen Garrison,4 of Rice Institute, in which he relates Bartell's measurements to the ratio of oil to water produced by wells and shows the types of petroleum reservoirs where the effects studied by Bartell are significant. This article is intended as a minor extension of such work.

THIS topic was discussed at the meeting in St. Louis in September, 1917, and at the meeting in New York in February last, but in the interval the war has accentuated in measurable degree the necessity for considering human relationship, not only as between nations, or in the treatment of our returning soldiers, but with respect to the relations between labor and capital in industry. It is my firm conviction that no other subject will have so large a place in industrial and political life during the next decade as this. Heretofore, the employer has been so engrossed with the financial, mechanical, and technical aspects of his business that he, has been willing to muddle through 'his relations with labor as best lie might and, on the other hand, the laborer has been so engrossed in his endeavors to secure a livelihood under whatever living and working conditions might be offered him that he has given little thought to his relations to his employer, until some misunderstanding has ended in disagreement and strike. No thinking man doubts that were the machinery available for friendly, personal, face-to-face consideration of the problems confronting employer and employee, there would he fewer disagreements, fewer strikes, and a better and more settled industrial situation. The necessity for some such medium for exchange of views has resulted in the organization of labor and, in some measure, of capital. Each party, engrossed only in defending its own viewpoint, has generally tried to gain its point by might rather than by right. Gradually, however, the representatives of both elements are beginning to appreciate that when the machinery for bringing them together in friendly communion is available their differences frequently settle themselves. There remain yet vast numbers of employers and of employees who are not organized and to whom the opportunity of friendly discussion of differences is not available; for these the machinery should he provided.

THE following is a brief account of the methods of measuring intelligence especially prepared for use in the U. S. Army, of typical results, and of some of their immediately practical applications. It has been prepared for the assistance of army examiners and for the information of all who are interested in the relations of scientific placement to military efficiency. PURPOSE OF THE INTELLIGENCE TESTS Under the direction of the Division of Psychology, Medical Department, and in accordance with provisions of War Department General Order No. 74, mental tests are given recruits during the 2-wk. detention period. These tests provide an immediate and reasonably dependable classification of the men according to general intelligence. Their specific purposes are to aid: 1. In the discovery of men whose superior intelligence suggests their consideration for advancement; 2. In the prompt selection and assignment to development battalions of men who are so inferior mentally that they are suited only for selected assignments; 3. In forming organizations of uniform mental strength where such uniformity is desired; 4. In forming organizations of superior mental strength where such superiority is demanded by the nature of the work to be performed; 5. In selecting suitable men for various army duties or for special training in colleges or technical schools; 6. In the early formation of training groups within regiment or battery in order that each man may receive instruction and drill according to his ability to profit thereby;

IT is customary to plot crystallographic planes or axes on a Wulff stereographic net which is ruled with parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude. If a single crystal is placed at the center of a sphere, the coordinates of a crystallographic plane or axis are the coordinates of the point where the axis intersects the sphere. The standard (HKL) projection is the projection for which the sphere is rotated so that the (HKL) pole is at the center of the projection. Schiebold and Sachs' and many others have published standard projections for the more important planes of a cubic crystal. With Tables I and 11, it is possible to plot any plane (HKL) of a cubic crystal on a standard (001) projection if the absolute values of the individual H, K, and L are nine or less, which is almost always the case. Using the methods outlined by Barrett,' the standard (001) projection can be rotated so that any arbitrary plane is at the center of the projection. The tables are believed to be important for two reasons: 1—The heretofore published standard projections usually are not of the proper size to fit the stereographic nets available. With these tables a standard projection can be made which will be of exactly the proper size for the available stereographic net. 2—With the tables, planes that do not appear on the previously published standard projections can be easily plotted. For these reasons, the tables are especially useful in the study of optical reflections from etched surfaces and can also be used to make a standard projection for the axis which is normal to the macroscopic surface. (This axis can be found by X-ray or optical methods.) Then if the crystal is etched, the effect of the etchant can readily be determined by comparing the latitude and longitude of the reflecting planes (as determined with an optical goniometer) with the standard projection that has been prepared. Use of the Tables Fig. 1 shows the meridians and parallel which have been designated as zero longitude and latitude. The tables themselves are self-explanatory. The

The focus of attention during 1939 was on increasing the octane number of gasoline. The "octane race" resumed full swing. The averagc octane number of house-brand gasoline by the end of the year had easily reached two numbers higher, with several companies in the field actually purveying house-brand gasoline of 78-80 "research" octane number, equivalent roughly to from 74 to 77 A.S.T.M. octane rating, compared with the 70 A.S.T.M. ceiling of two or more years ago. Whether this trend toward much higher octanes is the result or the cause of the many t,echnical developments in the motor-fuel field of recent, years, progress has really been startling. In addition to the advance in catalytic cracking and catalytic re-forming, other important contributions to the technical ability to produce higher octane values include: installat>ions involving increased capacity in thermal re-forming, with improved economic status both as to yields and octane number, by coupling with catalytic polymerization; more widespread adoption of catalytic and thermal polymerization, and a surge toward extensive installations of newly developed alkylation processes for making iso-octane, neo-hexanr and other high antiknock products; and greater use of improved desul-phurization processes, and application of superfractionation methods for segregation of practically pure hydrocarbons with superior octanr qualities from gas and highly volatilc liquids. The approaching of practical limits in the use. of tetracthyl lead (t,hr well-known "law of diminishing returnsn coming into the picture at the higher octane levels being approached) has given impetus to development of the methods listed above. The grain shape of the carbide in nickel-bowled ad cobalt-bonded titanium carbides was studied by microgiaphic examination, and the influcence of sintering atmosphere, sintering substl-after, ami the amount of metal binder on the grain shape was determined. If was found that the Carbide grain cross sections in the nickel and cobalt cermets ranged from round to angular, depending on the sintering conditions. The spheroidization of the carbides in both cobalt-bonded and nickel-bonded titanium carbides may be attribicted to oxygen. In the course of studies on titanium-carbide base cermets, various investigators have reported on the shape of the carbide grains, and it was noticed that grain shapes were obtained which were either spheroids, or polygons with rounded or square edges. It was also noted that the shapes of the carbide grains changed with time or composition. skolnickl showed that the titanium-carbide grains. after infiltration in vacuum with nickel tended to spheroi- dize with time. The titanium-carbide skeleton was located on a beryllia plate during infiltration. Gur-land,' who studied the microstructure of titanium carbide-cobalt compacts, showed that the carbide grains are round after 1 hr at 1450oC in a hydrogen atmosphere and angular after 7 hr at the same temperature. Goetzel3 has found that the carbide grains in compacts with a high binder content. 40 to 60 pet. tend to be spheroidized. whereas Blumenthal and silverman4 pointed out that the higher binder contents could yield either round or rectangular grains with rounded edges. depending on the nature of the binder. THE gas phase is one of the indispensible ingredients in flotation operations. Flotation depends on the collision of an air bubble and a mineral particle in a pulp and their ability to remain in contact long enough for adherence to take place. Before it is possible to understand the mechanics of air bubble-mineral particle encounter, it is necessary to learn more about the nature of bubbles themselves before collision with a mineral particle has taken place. To date, little work has been done on air bubbles in flotation systems. In 1945 Fahrenwald1 presented a study of the role of frothers on air bubbles and on aeration in flotation, and recently Wark and Sutherland2 discussed the work of Rosenberg3 in relation to flotation. The research reported in this present article was undertaken to investigate systematically the effect of bubble size and the concentration of certain reagents on the terminal velocity, shape, path, and drag coefficient of single bubbles in distilled water. Most of the work is concerned with the effect of a-terpineol on bubble motion in water, but studies were made with potassium chloride, potassium hydroxide, potassium ethyl xanthate, and potassium amyl xanthate.
