The practice of drying phosphate in Florida is as old as the industry, which began a little more than half a century ago. The methods, however, have changed considerably. At first, the natural process of exposure to the sun and air was used, later supplemented by wood fires beneath open-air stationary dry kilns and drying towers of various designs. It was not until the early nineties that rotary driers came into use, and at first they were of very small design and fired with wood. As the industry grew and tonnage increased, so likewise grew the number and size of rotary driers, until today the largest installations are 6 ft. up to 7 ft. 6 in. in diameter, and 55 to 60 ft. long, fired with crude oil. The reasons for drying phosphate rock are: (1) to eliminate freight on water in the shipment and (2) to facilitate the good grinding qualities required by the buyers in their acidulation. Phosphate pebbles vary materially in natural characteristics and each property has a direct bearing on the processing. In making comparisons of cost and operating conditions, the following are usually taken into consideration: 1. The hard dense pebbles, which contain very little interior moisture and 6 to 8 per cent total moisture, usually produced from the low-grade deposits. 2. The lighter, porous pebbles, which contain 4 to 5 per cent interior moisture and a total moisture ranging from 9 to 15 per cent. 3. The product of recovery operations using oily reagents, containing from 15 to 25 per cent moisture. 4. The size of the pebbles Usually the plus 5-mesh material is considered as "coarse rock"; the minus 5-mesh plus 24-mesh is "fine rock," and the minute particles below 24 mesh are called "concentrate." 5. The amount of moisture allowed in the dried product. The practice is generally to dry down to 1.5 to 2 per cent moisture. There is, however, an actual range in guarantee of from 1 per cent maximum to 3 per cent maximum.

ScReened pipe is designed with the view of restraining the fine, free-running sands of the production zone from entering oil wells. Its successful use is dependent on a number of factors. The nature and effects of some of these factors can be determined through experiment and observation, but some of the elements that have a distinct bearing on the use of screened pipe can be evaluated only by estimate. The important subsurface conditions which affect the use of screened pipe are: 1. Depth of production zone. 2. Extent of production zone. 3. Reservoir pressure. 4. Character and relative quantity of oil and gas. 5. Character of sediments: a. Cossolidation of beds. b. Variation in beds. c. Grain-size gradation of sands. d. Free-running characteristics of sand from different levels. Aside from the use of mechanical equipment and tools, the measures to be taken in the installation of screened pipe involve: 1. Size of liner. 2. Length of liner. 3. Design and mesh of screen. 4. Portion of liner to be screened. 5. Manner of setting liner. 6. Preparation of or washing of the well before or during the setting of the screen. 7. Manner of bringing in the well. 8. Manner of flowing the well. Values applicable to the actual subsurface conditions that exist at any well can only be approximated. In the mining and metallurgical industries, numerous problems arise requiring determinations of solid and of liquid particles suspended in air. Frequently, these problems are of local interest and involve purely economic or operating difficulties; on the other hand, toxic effects from the inhalation or the ingestion of substances suspended in air may be a matter of concern. For checking up process improvements or for determining ventilation efficiencies in problems of this general nature, various methods have been proposed. .Although simpler methods are often satisfactory, precipitation combines several desirable features that other methods lack. This paper is, therefore, devoted to a discussion of portable alternating-current precipitators applicable to the quantitat,ive determination and microscopy of dusts, fumes, and smokes in air. Small particles suspended in gases, such as air, are referred to in the literature as aerosols or suspensoids. Of these terms, suspensoids appears to be preferable as being more nearly in keeping with words in everyday use. In problems involving air pollution by small particles—by suspensoids—it is convenient to distinguish three broad classes based on the size, the degree of dispersion, and the method by which the particles become suspended in the air. Dusts.—Particles or aggregates of particles, 150 to 1 micron in diameter, that are thrown into the air by mechanical agencies are termed dusts. Examples are silica; talc; cement; organic dusts such as hard rubber, starch, and cocoa; flocculated fume, and smoke products. Fumes.—Particles, 0.2 to 1 micron in diameter, formed from chemical or physicochemical reactions are known as fumes. Examples are ammonium chloride, lead and mercury, zinc and magnesium oxides, fogs, and acid mists. Smokes.—Particles, less than 0.3 micron in diameter, formed by incomplete combustion of carbonaceous and other substances are called smokes. Examples are the particles formed from burning tobacco, oil, tar, and gas.

The Montana Phosphate Products Co., subsidiary of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, operates three phosphate properties north and northeast of Garrison, Powell County, Mont. Production of all three is from the same phosphate bed, a 3 to 4-ft. member of the Phosphoria formation, whose outcrop is traceable across the mountains of the Garnet Range in a series of southeasterly pitching folds. Because of topographical differences and of variations in the attitude of the bed, each property has its own mining methods and problems. Most of the phosphate rock produced since 1930 has been shipped to the plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. at Trail, B.C., where it is treated with sulphuric acid for conversion to phosphoric acid, which in turn is used to produce various fertilizers. History The occurrence of rock phosphate in Montana has been known since 1910, and the Garrison area was mapped by the United States Geological Survey in 1913. In the nineteen twenties William Anderson, owner of a ranch 8 miles north of Garrison, discovered phosphate on his land, and the Montana Phosphate Co., which later became the Montana Phosphate Products Co., was formed to work the deposit. Montana Phosphate Products Co. later obtained United States leases on two adjoining parcels of ground, and this combined property, known as the Anderson mine, has been the main source of Con-solidated's phosphate rock. The mine now includes an adjoining parcel leased from Anaconda and mined from the Anderson workings. In 1940, the Graveley mine, a small privately owned property 6 miles east of the Anderson, was leased from the owner by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and a U. S. lease held by Graveley on some adjoining ground was subleased. In 1943 the Luke mine, on the Mineral Hill property, 1 3/4 miles south-southwest of the Graveley, a U. S. lease, which previously had produced a few thousand tons, was optioned from the lessees by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and is now being developed. At both these mines the rock is appreciably higher grade than at the Anderson mine. Geology The Phosphoria formation is the Permian member of an extensive sequence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks. It is underlain by Pennsylvanian (Quadrant) quartzite and Mississippian limestone, and overlain without any marked unconformity by Jurassic (Ellis) shale and Cretaceous shale and sandstone. In the Garrison area, the Phosphoria itself consists mainly of about 50 ft. of gray to yellow chert. Immediately below the chert is the phosphate, usually 3 to 4 ft. thick. In view of the prominence which the conical mill has attained in the fine-crushing field within the few years since its introduction, the following comparison with its more mature forerunner, the Chilean mill, based on extensive tests, is submitted in the interest of the milling profession. Soon after designing the concentrating plant of the Miami Copper Co. in 1909, the Hardinge conical mill made its appearance in the milling forum. Its possibility as a suitable crushing device for the plant was well recognized, but in view of the lack of commercial demonstration, at the time, as to capacity, efficiency for desired product, and the still more uncertain factors of cost of maintenance and power consumption, it was deemed that the immediate adoption of this machine throughout the plant would be a hazardous undertaking. For these reasons it was decided to equip the majority of the immediately required units of the plant with Chilean mills, the fine-crushing proficiencies of which were better known, and one section with Hardinge mills, to serve as a test unit for the guidance of future installations and replacements. Thereby, after 1.5 years' operation with both types of mills, a thorough test as to metallurgical efficiency and cost economy has been obtained. The conical mill used in these tests is the 8-ft. Hardinge pebble mill, having a cylinder 22 in. in length. The cylindrical portion of this mill is lined with cast-iron liner plates, and the conical extensions with silex bricks bound together by cement. Each liner plate carries a projecting lifter, the function of which is to increase the height of drop of the lifted material. Danish No. 5 pebbles, obtained from the coast deposits of Denmark, are used for the grinding charge. The Chilean mill used is a fast-running, 3-roller, 6-ft. Saturn mill, with screens of 0.037-in. opening. The feed to these mills is the oversize of Callow screens having 0.029-in. openings, which follow rolls crushing to 0.5 in. Extensive sampling of coal in Illinois during the past 10 or 12 yegrs by the State Geological Survey, in cooperation with various organizations, such as the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Cooperative Mining Investigations, has made possible the delineation of two areas of low-sulfur coal in the southern part of Illinois. The $fur content is less than 1.25 per cent., so that, if otherwise suitable, these coals can be employed for metallurgical uses and for the manufacture of water-gas and retort gas. One of these areas is small and lies in Jackson County, near Murphysboro, the other is much larger and includes a large part of the famous Franklin County field. A small area of No. 2, or Murphysboro, coal has been worked for many years near the town of Murphysboro, Jackson County, Ill. In two mines, at least, the coal has a sulfur content of less than 1.25 per cent. It is doubtful, however, whether this field will ever be a source of large tonnage as the total area underlain by low-sulfur coal in workable thickness is probably less than 15 sq. mi. (24.14 sq. km.), and a large part of it has already been worked out.. The location of the area of low-sulfur coal in the Franklin County field is shown in the accompanying map. The small area underlain by the Murphysboro low-sulfur coal is shown near the town of that name in the central part of Jackson County. The larger area lies in the west side of Franklin County, extending also about 6 mi. (9.65 km.) south into Williamson County, about 4 mi. (6.43 km.) west into northern Jackson and western Perry County, and northward an undetermined distance into Jefferson County. All but the northern limit of the area is fairly well defined by sampling in numerous mines. The inner cross-lined area is underlain by coal having less than 1 per cent. sulfur, the outer boundary surrounding the area underlain by coal having less than 1.25 per cent. sulfur. The coal mined in the district is No. 6 or Herrin coal, commonly known as the Carterville or Franklin County coal. The bed has a thickness varying from about 8 ft. It is realized that the depth of fluid maintained in a pumping well is sometimes influenced by other considerations than the quantity of fluid that will enter the well: the prevention of sand incursion, prevention of waste of natural gas, and the maintenance of a suitable submergence for the pump, for example. These latter factors have an important influence on the productivity of the well, so that otherwise unwarranted fluid levels must sometimes be maintained to offset them; but where the handling of unconsolidated sands is not a problem of consequence and where water has been properly excluded, the principles developed here and the practices recommended should apply. The principal objective of the producer should be to produce the maximum quantity of oil in the shortest possible time. Any method or equipment that will increase the rate of production during the early years of the life of the well, when gas pressure is high, will greatly augment the ultimate production. The maintenance of a proper fluid level in the well at all times will go far toward accomplishing this desired result. For a given set of conditions surrounding the flow of oil into a particular well, in which the viscosity of the oil, the porosity and grain size of the sand, and the diameter of the well appear as constants, two variables determine the quantity of oil that will flow from the sand into the well. These are: the effective pressure behind or within the oil in the reservoir sand, and the fluid level maintained within the well. The former is the expulsive force that causes movement of oil from the sand into the well, while the latter determines the magnitude of a resisting force opposing such movement. The first of these factors is largely beyond the control of the oil producer, but it is in his interest to reduce the opposing force to the lowest economic limit.

IN CONSIDERING the waste in the coal industry, which is the title of this discussion, we must entirely eliminate the anthracite region. The demand for anthracite has been constantly increasing and the mines have been able to run during this last year, while the bituminous field was idle for two-thirds of the time. It is on a 100 per cent. basis, which is the best answer to any waste in industry investigations. The anthracite region is also in a very much better position on account of its control by very large companies which realize that their resources are limited; they must husband these resources in every way and they are making the most careful study of methods of mining and preparation to avoid any possibility of waste. This is well known and realized by the managers of those companies. Even the fine slush which was formerly thrown away is now being stored in the hope that methods will be found by which it can be used economically, either in briquet or pulverized fuel in coking. This has been tried. The anthracite factor may be dismissed from the waste in industry discussion, except as it applies to the general public that burns anthracite; there is a tremen-dous waste of anthracite in the burning of it. Looking at the ash piles where anthracite is burned and seeing the amount of carbon that comes away with the ashes, one realizes that proper efficiency is not obtained in the burning of that coal. Even its higher cost does not seem to bring people to a realization of the necessity of conserving and burning properly the entire coal carbon content of what has cost so large a price. Many people feel that they want to have the coal as large as they can shovel into the furnace; they do not realize that the small coal makes just as many heat units and can be bought at half the price. Consequently, the demand is continually in excess of the probable pro-duction for the larger sizes of anthracite, while the smaller sizes, such as large buckwheat and pea, are a drug on the market and can be bought at nearly half the figure; and yet, if properly burned, these produce just as much heat and can be used with a much greater economy than the large egg and stove.

From the viewpoint of practical economic engineering the main value in studies of demand and supply lies in the information they give concerning the next movement of price. The title of this discussion is too comprehensive for detailed analysis and it will, therefore, be narrowed to the question of price measurement. The oil operator is interested primarily in net profits. Prices, costs and production determine them. Production is here used in its broadest sense. It includes refining and marketing. It is an operating problem. Prices and costs are economic considerations. Though costs are an important element of prices and profits, the subject is too large to be treated in a brief paper of this sort. In the long run, costs govern prices, but for the purpose of gaging prices in the immediate future the relationship of current demand and supply are more significant. Operating, expansion, retrenchment, sales and storage policies of oil companies are largely influenced by the feeling of executives concerning this relationship. The stockholders of companies whose executives are wrong may suffer. Investors who err in their judgment may likewise lose. On the other hand, oil companies and investors who appraise these factors correctly and move accordingly will profit. It is an important subject worthy of careful consideration. The author has been asked to discuss the subject for 1928. From the beginning of the year until the first of June, as illustrated by Fig. 1, over-supply prevailed in the face of restricted production, but from June to September, with record consumption, demand slightly exceeded supply and oil came out of storage in the United States as a whole. One of the main problems of the oil man is to decide whether this condition will continue and what the next movement of prices will be. Before he can do so he must have an understanding of the underlying conditions and of the facts that led to the present situation. With these facts in mind he is in a position to measure the effect of the present relationship of demand and supply on price and is afforded a perspective that may enable him to look ahead for a short period of time. Inasmuch as there has been a great deal of activity in this district recently, a paper of this kind should treat of all the various phases of mining, namely, prospecting, developing, and operating. Prospecting .. Where ore is found at a depth of 100 ft. (30 m.) or more, the prospect work is done by churn drilling. Several makes of churn drills are used in this work, both steam- and gasoline-driven machines being used. The drilling is usually started with a 6-in. bit, and the size of the bit is reduced, if necessary, as the hole is advanced. It is general practice to drill from 100- to 400-ft. holes, but this is governed entirely by the location and formation of the ground. In drilling sheet ground, close spacing of drill holes is unnecessary, but in narrow orebodies, the holes are spaced from 15 to 50 ft. (4.6 to 15 m.) apart. Ten years ago, very few assays were kept of the drilling, but during recent years records have been kept very accurately, showing the location, elevation, assays, and also the vertical section of the hole. After the orebody is reached, cuttings are taken every 2 or 3 ft. (0.6 to 0.9 m.) samples being sometimes taken by pouring the water off the cuttings and taking a portion of the coarse material for assay. It has been found, however, that very often the sludge material poured off with the water contains high mineral values. To overcome this, cuttings from each 2 or 3 ft. are put in a container, and, after the water is evaporated, sample for assay is taken by means of Jones samplers. Permanent records of cuttings showing various formations are kept in glass jars or glued on large cards. Drilling at present is costing from $1.25 to $1.50 per foot. In pre-war times, the drilling costs ran from 75c. to $1 per foot. Development After proving property by drilling, shafts are put down to the ore-body. Mine-run ore is received at Vitro in gondola cars and fed directly to a Cedar Rapids impact crusher. Following screening, the undersize travels through a recently installed three-stage sampling plant where successive cuts are executed by conventional Geary-Jennings type cutters to produce a final sample of 1 lb per ton of raw ore fed. Crushed ore is transported to one of three storage silos or to stockpile, depending upon grade and type of amen- ability. This permits the blending of a mill feed with some degree of consistency. Final grinding is accomplished in one of two closed circuit ball mill-classifier systems allowing simultaneous processing of two basic types of ores. High acid consumers may be leached separately in the required environment. Part of the free acid remaining can then be utilized by an ore stream entering later whose component ores require much less free acid for leaching.

I ask your permission to speak about a matter which is not of a specifically scientific nature, but more of a general—I might even say of an international—nature, and the international character which this city now presents must be my justification for introducing it. The Germans, very often, are thought to be an exceedingly warlike people, but I come to-day in the capacity of a peacemaker. Our German language is an original language; it is, therefore, a language in which it is impossible to change the meaning of a word at will. It may be, perhaps, easier in a combined language, as the English, to associate and to exchange meanings. Now, a word which we hear a great deal at the present day, is "Stahl," in English, "steel." This word means, in the German language, a substance which can be hardened. As the German literature, in relation to metallurgy, is the oldest of the modern world, this circumstance may give the German a right to ask for consideration. But I think, now, when the four languages, German, Swedish, French, and English, compete in rich metallurgical literature, it is very necessary to have uniformity in the nomenclature of iron, which would prove not only useful for science, but equally so for trade. For that purpose I propose to make the divisions of iron so that the word steel shall comprise a subdivision and not a primary division as formerly. Nature furnishes us iron mostly in the state of oxides, and if in any other condition, we must convert the ore into oxide before we can make iron. The oxides are always mixed with certain earthy substances called rock or gangue. The extraction of iron involves, therefore, the twofold process of the reduction of the iron, and imparting to it the amount of carbon necessary for technical purposes, and the separation of the reduced and carburized iron from the gangue. The reduction is always effected by carbon or carbonaceous substances (coke, anthracite, carbonic oxide, etc.), and the result is, according to the degree of heat employed, either malleable iron or a non-malleable iron. The process of malting malleable iron in this way is called, generally, the direct process—in German, Rennarbeit. It produces the iron in a solid state with a fluid cinder. By this process our ancestors made all their iron, and it has been revived in various ways in modern times up to the process of Mr. Blair, so far as I know, always without commercial success. The

Oklahoma produced about 40,000,000 bbl. less crude oil in 1930 than it did in 1929, but developed the largest initial production from current well completions ever recorded in its history. The output of this year would have exceeded all previous years had it not been for state-wide production curtailment. The record initial production of 5,911,982 bbl. from new oil wells completed during the year is accounted for entirely by the rapid development of the Oklahoma City field. Completions declined to the lowest levels since 1909, as a result of a marked reduction in number of dry holes incident to reduced wildcat exploration. Leasing was most active in western and northern counties of the state west of Oklahoma City, but on a much smaller scale than in the preceding year. Geological and geophysical surveys were likewise most active in this western territory. The urge to deeper objectives resulted in the discovery of oil on the Cement fold. Changing economic conditions have created a distress situation among the marginal operators in northeastern localities of the state. Elsewhere in the state production records and successful exploitation of new supplies have been eclipsed by a new social concept of the industry in accord with natural economic developments. Many of the producers of crude oil have organized for a voluntary stabilization of the industry by regulating the output of wells. To enforce their measures these operators have sought for and secured the support of the state. Consequently, the current position of the crude-oil producer is not unlike that of the natural-gas producer—withdrawal of supplies in accordance with market needs. And while the industry as a whole is artificially stabilized by these measures individual operators and some of the integrated concerns suffer hardships. Oil Developments and Production The early operations in Oklahoma were confined to northeastern and eastern localities, beginning in 1885. The first commercial oil wells were completed in 1894, near Chelsea in Craig County, from Cherokee sands in the lower portion of the Pennsylvanian section. Scattered

The Aztec mine is not widely known, by reason of its isolation and the relative insignificance of its tonnage; financially, however, it has an enviable record and geologically it is extremely interesting. The town of Baldy, Colfax County, the mine camp, at an elevation of 10,000 ft. (3048 m.) is 8 mi. west of Ute Park, the terminus of a branch of the A. T. & S. I?. Ry. The mining tract was designated by the Maxwell Land Grant Co. as the Aztec Reservation, and lies on the east slope of Mt. Baldy, the summit of which, 12,491 ft. (3807 m.), is one of the highest in the state. Rich copper float was found on the northeast slope of the mountain in 1865, and discovery work was begun the next year. At the same time, gold placers were found on Willow Creek, on the southwest side of the mountain, and the Elizabethtown settlement followed shortly. Gold washing lasted many years. In 1867, placer gold was found also on Ute Creek, the tracing of which to its source led to the locating of the Aztec mine by Lynch, Dogherty, and Fosley in the following year. The early production came from the contact of shale and sandstone or from sandstone immediately above the contact. Exact record of production is lacking, but L. C. Gratonl gives estimates ranging between $1,250,000 and $1,500,000, of which about $1,000,000 was taken out in the first four years. After the exhaustion of the early bonanza, production continued intermittently until 1909, when the Maxwell Land Grant Co, undertook systematic development, through four adits at intervals of 75 ft. vertically or approximately 100 ft. on the dip of the contact, which was thought to contain generally a quartz-pyrite vein. VERY little is known about the properties of relatively pure refractory metals in the cast state since these metals are customarily made by powder-metallurgy methods. Recently, the development of the vacuum arc-melting furnace has made possible the study of large, sound ingots of cast molybdenum. The ductility of molybdenum, at room temperature, may vary considerably. Often the brittle state depreciates the utility of molybdenum, even for the material prepared by powder-metallurgy techniques. At the outset of this program, it was felt that if the causes of brittleness were to be determined it might be possible to reduce the difficulties met in the working of molybdenum. Also, the problem of producing strong, fusion weldrnents of molybdenum might be solved. The conditions required to produce ductile molybdenum by the powder-metallurgy technique are reasonably well known. A fibrous or elongated-grain structure has good ductility although this property is probably directional. The equiaxed structure obtained in fully recrystallized molybdenum has been considered to be brittle. The reasons for this behavior of molybdenum have not been established. The preparation of cast molybdenum ingots by the vacuum-arc method was described by Parke and Ham.' By this method, ingots weighing up to 250 Ib were produced." Parke and Ham1 found that molybdenum ingots containing more than approximately 0.0025 pct oxygen could not be hot forged. On the other hand, they found that fully deoxidized cast molybdenum, containing up to 0.06 pct carbon, could be hot forged. However, the as-cast ingots containing either carbon or oxygen were brittle at room temperature. Parke and Ham,1 Woodside,3 and Zapffe, Landgraf, and Worden4 noted the inter-granular precipitation of oxide or carbide in cast molybdenum. This study—part of an extensive program on mo-lybdenum—had the following objectives: (1) To investigate the causes for the brittleness of cast molybdenum at room temperature, (2) to investigate the means for improving the ductility of cast molybdenum at room temperature, and (3) to add to the knowledge of cast molybdenum and of cast metals in general.

The production of petroleum in Venezuela during 1931 was approximately 118,767,000 bbl., a decrease of 18,904,000 bbl., or 13.7 per cent, compared with the previous year. This is the first break in production, which has risen steadily since 1920, and is attributable to restriction of output and drilling operations, in harmony with lessened demand, rather than to any real decline in potential production. Venezuela ranked third among the world's producers, having lost second place to Russia. The Bolivar coastal fields, which were extended approximately 14 miles southward during the year, continued to supply most of the oil. La Concepcion, Los Manueles and Quiriquire all showed marked increases. A new field of light oil was discovered on the north coast near Puerto Cumarebo, State of Falcon. Exports declined 15.7 per cent, from 137,377,000 bbl. in 1930 to about 115,800,000 bbl. in 1931. Crude oil in storage at the end of the year amounted to 7,450,000 bbl., a decrease of 2,150,000 as compared with 1930. Tankage utilized is about 40 per cent of the available space. A drastic decline in drilling activity reduced the number of wells completed in producing areas from 401 in 1930 to 116 in 1931. Only three wells were drilled in the Lagunillas field proper, but, the amount of closed-in production and proven acreage gave assurance of a satisfactory potential output. Of the 1580 wells drilled to the close of 1931 in the producing areas of the Bolivar Coast, 631 were active and 853 were closed in; 96 had been abandoned. The status of the active wells at the end of 1931 was as follows: flowing, 331; pumping, 99; gas-air lift, 201. Producing wells closed in numbered 452; workovers, 8; totally inactive, 393. Lago Petroleum Corp. and Venezuela Gulf Oil Co. placed in operation the first units of their electric power plants, the former at Punta Gorda and the latter at Las Morochas, and are replacing steam power in their operations as rapidly as possible. Compressor stations were also installed for use in connection with air-gas lift operations. A considerable volume of gas was treated in gasoline extraction plants, the tail gas being recom-pressed and utilized together with natural high-pressure gas, for stimulation of production.

A quantitative relationship between the allotropic phase boundaries of zirconium-base binary systenzs and the solute metallic valence is shown through an intermediate thermodynamic parameter. A simplified equation relating this parameter to the phase boundaries is briefly reviewed, and data from the literature are used to show the relationship of this parameter to the solute metallic valence. It has been reported that the solute metallic valence can be used as an index of phase stabilization in zirconium-base binary alloys.' It was shown that the algebraic sign of the slopes of the hcp/bcc phase boundaries of zirconium alloys correspond to the algebraic sign of the metallic valence of zirconium minus the metallic valence of the solute, or, in other words, a solute whose metallic valence is higher than that of the solvent tends to stabilize the high-temperature phase while one whose metallic valence is lower than that of the solvent tends to stabilize the low-temperature phase. Further analysis of the zirconium binary systems has revealed a quantitative relationship between the solute metallic valence and the relative slopes of the two-phase allotropic boundaries. This relationship involves a thermodynamic quantity whose significance can be seen in the following section. H. L. HAMMERSLEY, B. C. Dept. of Mines. I would like to ask Mr. Brawner if the direction that he measured in the boreholes with the camera was referenced to magnetic north? MR. BRAWNER. Yes, it was. However, there is one problem that you may encounter if the ore body is magnetic; the borehole compass will give erroneous results. Three procedures are available to overcome this. The first one involves the use of a gyro compass instead of a magnetic compass. The second technique developed by Christiansen in Salt Lake City, is to orient the core with the use of scribing knives. The third method is to remove the compass needle and place a steel ball in the compass case. The hole must be drilled at a slight angle off the vertical. The location of the steel ball, which will roll to the underside of the hole is photographed. A borehole directional survey is then made, from which the bearing of the steel ball relative to the axis of the compass can be determined. The joint orientation is then related to this bearing at all depths. J. ROBINSON, B. C. Dept. of Mines. It was stated this morning that there have been some recent developments that give us the ability to drill horizontal drainage holes and install drainage pipes more cheaply than in the past. Would Mr. Brawner tell us some of the new developments and methods of installing these horizontal drain holes? MR. BRAWNER There are two zones in which you may be concerned about installing drains; the first is in the overburden soil, the second is in the rock. Each area requires a different installation method. If the rock is fairly massive and the holes will remain open, the simplest procedure is to use standard air track equipment or a percussion drill. At one of the mines in the Highland Valley, drains up to 300 ft. long have been installed with a percussion drill at a rate of one drain per day. The costs were in the order of $2.30 and $2.40 per foot. If the rock is quite soft, such as in a serpentine, it will be necessary to install a casing in the hole. The least expensive casing that will not deteriorate within the life required should be used. Plastic pipe or black iron pipe are commonly used. Y.-The part of Mr. Fiske's paper that interests me especially is that portion dealing with the raw materials, and the tests that were applied to the raw materials in order to determine their value in advance, if possible, because that, I believe, is a step in the right direction. For a number of years I have done my best to persuade different consumers of clay to develop standard methods for testing raw materials. We have in this country a large variety of clays which can be used for a great many different purposes, but in many cases the consumers either have no standard methods for determining the value of those clays in. advance, or if they have they do not publish them; consequently it often puts the clay miner at a disadvantage. If, for example, manufacturers of different types of refractory materials would state publicly just what physical tests their raw materials have to meet, it would, I believe, help them to find more easily the materials that they are looking for, and the clay producer would also be benefited. It would also encourage him to have his clays tested in advance, so that samples could be accompanied by certificates of physical tests that would be of convenience to the manufacturer. At the present time, in this country there are certain types of clay which seem to be rather scarce. There apparently are not many deposits of clay that are exactly suited for the manufacture of zinc refractories. So, too, there are not many deposits of clay that are suited for the manufacture of glass-pots, or the blocks for glass tank furnaces, or clays that can be used for graphite crucibles. Now, in many cases, no standard series of tests has been developed. I am also gratified to see that Mr. Fiske considers the tensile strength. tests of value. Some years ago the American Ceramic Society appointed a committee to draw up a series of recommendations covering standard tests. These recommendations were especially for the use of State geologists and the U., .S. Geological, Survey. Among the tests that were considered was the tensile-strength test, which Mr. Fiske has mentioned in his paper. Unfortunately, a majority of the committee turned it down, and the test was therefore not officially approved, but two of us, who formed the minority, believed in it. Since then the other members of the Committee have come to see that that is an important test to make and Mr. Fiske has emphasized it in his paper.

The mining possibilities of the volcanic area south of Bel-mont, Nye county, Nevada, have long been known. Some of the old-time prospectors knew that gold existed there. Its remoteness from any source of supplies, its long distances from water, the absence of game, and more, perhaps, the lack of grass for animals to subsist upon, has made this an unattractive region in which to search for mines. The decline of the Comstock mines, the exhaustion of sundry large and rich ore-bodies, the high cost of mining, marketing, and, particularly, the ruinously high freight-charges upon refractory ore that had to be shipped to distant smelters, have kept investors out of Nevada for the last few gears; and mining people have hardly yet awakened to the importance of To-nopah, Goldfield, and perhaps the newer and less developed districts. The discovery of Tonopah by J. L. Butler, who located the Mizpah claim in May, 1900, and the fortunes soon realized there, attracted many people. As the boom declined, many went away, some scattering out into the surrounding country, and the population is now about 7,000. In the fall of 1902 a discovery of gold was made 23 miles south, in what is now known as the Sandstorm group, 4 miles NW. of Goldfield. In the winter of 1903—4 the Combination, January and Florence mines were discovered, and shipments of high-grade ore soon followed. In January, 1905, there were 10,000 people in Gold-field. In June, 1904, rich gold-ore was found 85 miles SE., at the foot of the south end of the Kawich mountains, but this discovery was kept quiet until a re-location could be made. On August 10, 1904, the Bullfrog claims, and a month later the Ladd mountain and neighboring claims, were located. The Shoshone group was located September 24. This district is
