A method is presented in which the hydrocarbon weight fractional analyses of the well effluents from a true gas-tip-portion well and a true dark-oil-ring well furnish the basic data for determining the properties of any mixture of production from the two sources. The effect of injected gas on these properties can be computed. Comparison of similar properties of a given well effluent to the properties of mixtures of the basic well effluents will give the relative amounts of production from the two sources and injected gas. Presentation of Problem Oil fields having an area of gas-cap, or light-oil production, over the dark-oil area present a problem of increasing gas-oil ratios during the production of an oil well. The use of pressure maintenance in a field such as above, or a cycling project, wherein residue gas from an absorption plant is injected into the reservoir, adds to the problem, because a part of the increased gas-oil ratio may be due to the production of injected gas. The usefulness of a means to determine the amount of injected gas in a well effluent led to the development of a method in which well-effluent analyses of a true gas-cap-portion well and a true dark-oil-ring well furnish the basic data needed to determine whether injected gas of a known composition is present in a given well effluent. Development op Method The method presented herein is based upon the principle that if two fluids, or well effluents, having different properties are mixed in known proportions by weight, • the properties of their mixtures can be computed. Conversely, if these basic data are known, the properties of a mixed well effauent can be used to compute the relative amounts of each type of well effluent in the mixture. A convenient way of making these computations is to have the fractional analyses of the base well effluents and mixtures expressed in weight fractions The mathematical equations expressing the properties of mixtures will be developed for a two-component system consisting of the well effluents from the dark-oil ring and the gas-cap area. The added effect of injected gas, a third component, will also be developed. The following assumptions have been made in developing the method: 1. The gas-cap and dark-oil fluids exist initially in separate portions of the reservoir. 2. The fluids in each portion exist in a single phase at pressures above the saturation pressure for the dark-oil fluid. 3. The composition of each fluid is substantially constant throughout its respective portion of the reservoir. 4. Changes in reservoir pressure and temperature will not change the composition of the fluid entering the well bore. 5. The injected gas displaces original gas-cap fluid 100 per cent. •• 6. THERE exists in., the territory embraced between the summit of the Sierra Nevada and the coast a great dike and vein system that appears never to have been recognized in its entirety, nad many facts concerning it have never been published. This is important, not only in affording numerous clues bearing on the origin, nature, and age of the mercury deposits, and eliminating many controverted questions, but it. incidentally affords numerous facts bearing on the genesis of gold, copper, chromite, magnesite, dolomite, a type of calcite deposit, and numerous associated minerals. The mineral springs of the State almost without exception emanate from these dikes. A great range of the hydrocarbons also exists throughout the entire system of these dikes. Seepages from their, walls have frequently been mistaken as emanating from the inclosing sandstone and shale, resulting in heavy expenditures in the futile development of these Cretaceous beds, which contain no petroleum within the territory. The theory of mountain making by lateral or tangential pressure is inconsistent with some of the following recorded facts. The limitations of this paper do not admit of a description of each of the hundred or more mercury deposits embraced in the area, and therefore only typical examples will be described. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, is not submitted as complete, or as entirely accurate, but it is as nearly so as the notes at hand will admit. The field is too extensive to be completely covered by a single individual. The heavy continuous lines represent sections actually surveyed! The sections and extensions- in. dotted line are assumed, and are either unsurveyed, or -buried under younger beds. There are numerous branches connecting the great parallels that the small-scale map does not admit of plotting, even if the survey had been complete. Likewise, the conclusions in some instances may be faulty, but it is to be hoped that as a whole they may serve as a foundation on which a more complete structure may be built in the future.

Inhomogeneous yielding during the early stages of plastic flow has been observed in many metals and has long been a subject of controversy. Low carbon steel, when strained at room temperature, exhibits a distinct yield point at which the metal ceases to behave elastically and begins to flow plastically without further increase in stress,† often with an actual decrease in stress from that existing at the yield point. One manifestation of this behavior is the familiar Lüders lines. The extent of the yield point elongation (the plastic strain which results without raising the stress above that at the initial yield point) may be several percent. Several explanations of this type of yielding in steels have appeared in the literature:1-3}; 1. The segregation of carbides or other constituents at the grain boundaries of ferrite forms cell-like blocks which break down at a higher stress than that at which the ferrite alone will flow. 2. The precipitation of various constituents within the ferrite itself in some way blocks initial flow until a higher stress is reached, after which a great deal of flow occurs without further increase in stress. 3. The restraining influence of neighboring, less favorably oriented grains in a polycrystal results in a storing up of energy, which on yielding is sufficient to cause the continued propagation of slip bands on the multiplicity of slip systems available in adjacent iron crystals without increase in stress. 4. Local segregation of carbon atoms increases the stress required for the initial propagation of dislocations. The stress required for further deformation is lower.3 Such an explanation would require the presence of upper and lower yield points in single crystals. Low and Gensamer2 have shown that heterogeneous yielding can be eliminated by removal of carbon and nitrogen from polycrystalline steels by wet-hydrogen treatment. They also demonstrated that the re-introduction of minute amounts of carbon or nitrogen caused a return of the yield point. Observations of the initial flow of single crystals containing small amounts of carbon and nitrogen- should provide a clue to the explanation of inhomogeneous yielding. Previous tests of iron crystals4-6 can not be considered conclusive because it is uncertain whether the carbon and nitrogen were satisfactorily removed by the decarburization technique employed. The purpose of the experiments described herein was to determine whether single iron crystals containing either carbon or nitrogen would exhibit in-homogeneous yielding. Experimental Procedures THE PREPARATION OF SINGLE CRYSTALS All crvstals were formed in the following way. Aluminum killed sheet material 80 mils thick was machined into specimens of the outer contour shown in Fig 1. These mildly tapered specimens were decarburized at 730°C for 16 hr in hydrogen that had been bubbled rapidly through water maintained at 70°. The Palabora ore consists of two types, a carbonatite containing a low titanium magnetite, and a foskorite containing high titanium magnetite. The latter type also contains substantial quantities of phosphate. These two ore types are separately crushed and are kept separate through copper flotation and magnetic separation, for recovery of magnetite, with the low Ti magnetite being shipped as iron ore. High phosphate tailings are pumped to Foskor, a government-owned phosphate plant nearby. The Palabora plant was originally designed in 1966 for 33, 000 tpd using two 54 in. by 74 in. Allis -Chalmers gyratories; two 7 ft (2. 13 m) standards; four 7 ft shortheads; and six grinding lines, each using one 1,200 hp rod mill and two 1,200 hp ball mills. A fifth short- head and one more grinding line were added later; and with flowsheet improvements, the capacity of the plant was increased to 59, 500 stpd. A further plant expansion involving a third 54 in. primary and two 32 ft by 15 ft (9.75 by 4.6 m) 9,000 hp autogenous mills and another flotation section will bring its capacity to 87,500 stpd in 1977. These two fully autogenous mills are constructed entirely out of doors near the primary crusher, and the ground ore will be pumped a mile to the concentrator by a five-stage pumping system. The Palabora ore is mined with 6, 10, and 12 7d (4.6, 7.6, and 9. 2 cu m) shovels and hauled to the crushers in 110 and 165 st trucks. Sixty-five ton trucks were originally used, but the crusher dump pockets were designed for larger units. Dump pockets, crushers, feeders, and take- away belts are offset in order to keep the two ore types separate. Centerlines of the crushers are only 43 ft (13. 1 m) apart; but, because of their being offset, maintenance room is ample. Initially, more carbonatite ore than foskorite was mined; but as the pit has deepened, this ratio has been reversed. The Palabora ore breaks in the pit with a large amount of oversize boulders; and, with the use of larger trucks, a splitter has been installed on one side of each dump pocket to protect the crusher spider. Smaller trucks dump on the opposite side. To accomodate the splitter, the pocket edge has been raised one meter and moved back one meter. Dust is collected through a special vent shaft between the crushers and the mantle relining area; but even so, two high-pressure water spray headers with nozzles are installed under the edge of the pocket at each dumping position. While only one truck dumps at a time, sprays from all four headers are used to suppress dust. Any leakage of water through the seal around the upper bowl of the crusher is caught by a circular trough under the seal and directed to a sump pump. At this point, there

The Pu-La alloy systenz has been studied by thertnal, tnzcrographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. It is churacterized by a liquid miscibility gap, a maximum solubility of about 20 ut. pct PM in y lanthunum and 19 at. pct PI* in 0 lanthanum, very little soluibility of lanthanum in the plulonium allotropes, and the absence of intermediate phases. THE existence of immiscible liquids in the Pu-La system has been reported by Schonfeld.1 A tentative phase diagram based on the results of thermal-analysis experiments has been constructed by Poole et a1 2 This diagram shows a liquid immiscibility loop with a monotectic at 77 at. pct La and 846°C. 7 lanthanum is shown to dissolve 20 at. pct Pu and to decompose by an inverse peritectic reaction (y La = L , + p La) at about 82 at, pct La and 833°C. The ß lanthanum solvus was not determined, but the thermal work indicated a maximum solubility of 16 at. pct Pu in ß lanthanum. The present investigation has defined the solubility limits of plutonium in y lanthanum and 0 lanthanum, and, with the exception of minor discrepancies, has verified the results of Poole et al. 1) EXPERIMENTAL The electrolytic plutonium melting stocks were better than 99.9 wt pct pure, the main impurities being 90 ppm Fe and 50 ppm W. The lanthanum melting stocks, supplied by Research Chemicals and the Cerium Metals Corp., were about 99 wt pct pure, the main impurity detected by our spectrochemical analysis being 2000 ppm Fe. The components for each alloy button (-5 g) were weighed on an analytical balance and were melted together in a conventional arc furnace. The effects of composition on the mechanical properties and aging characteristics of several alloys in the Ti-V-Cr system, with and without aluminum modifications, were evaluated. Increasing the chromium, vandium, or aluminum content increased the strength of quenched structures with chromium being the most effective strengthener. Appreciable aging response was obtained with low chromium alloys, but high chromium alloys age softened rather than. hardened. High vanadium contents had a similar effect. Aluminum additions shifted the aging behavior toward that observed in lower chromium alloys, enabling high chromium alloys to be age hardened. DURING the course of titanium alloy development many a and a-ß alloys have been evolved to commercial status. However, only one all-ß alloy has achieved this same stature. This is the Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al alloy. It is characterized by a very sluggish ß-phase decomposition reaction such that very slow cooling rates can retain the 0 phase at room temperature. In addition, very high strength levels can be obtained by long-time aging treatments. Combinations of cold or warm working followed by aging produce even further improvements in strength. This paper describes the results of a research program in which the effects of composition on the mechanical properties and aging characteristics of several alloys in the Ti-V-Cr system, with and without aluminum modifications, were evaluated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Electrolytically refined, high-purity titanium was used as the alloy base for these studies. Iodide chromium, electrolytically refined vanadium granules, and high-purity aluminum sheet were used as alloying additions. The compositions of interest were melted as 250-g ingots in a direct current arc melting furnace under a flowing atmosphere of argon. The ingots were hot forged to 3/4-in.-diam bars, vacuum annealed for 6 hr at 1800°F to reduce residual hydrogen content, and then hot swaged to 1/4-in.-diam rods. Fabrication history, and interstitial analyses after fabrication are given in Table I. All specimens to be heat treated were sealed in Vycor capsules under a partial pressure of argon. Samples used to define the ß transus were quenched from temperatures ranging from 1350° to 1100°F after holding at temperature for 15 min. Samples for aging studies were quenched from above the ß transus temperature and then aged for up to 64 hr at 750°F and for 100 hr at 850°, 900°, and 950°F. The effects of straining prior to aging were also investigated. The results of these studies were used to select the heat treatments for the tensile specimen blanks. Heat treatments of the tensile specimens are described in Table 11. Alloys were aged after solution heat treatment or after solution heat treatment and cold swaging to 50 pct reduction in area. SINCE the first atomic bomb exploded over Japan, a great deal of speculation has been published about the use of atomic energy instead of coal for the production of power. Atomic energy, in time, may displace coal for this purpose, but atomic energy will not displace coal in supplying chemical raw materials to the rapidly expanding carbon-chemicals market. Modern civilization demands large quantities of carbon compounds and the logical source of many of these is coal. Consequently, many progressive operators are considering the possibilities of the utilization of coal as a chemical raw material as never before. Furthermore, the demand for clean, smokeless, and ashless fuels will continue to increase and the only way to handle coal under those conditions is to take it apart, just as crude petroleum is taken apart. One can readily imagine where the petroleum industry would be now if it had insisted on selling customers only crude oil, perhaps emulsified with a little salt water to correspond to the moisture and mineral matter in raw coal. The time seems to be coming at an accelerated pace when mine operators will find that competing for a highly selective fuel market by producing a larger tonnage at smaller cost will be less profitable than to increase the value of a smaller tonnage many fold by producing something more valuable to industry and civilization than raw coal. For example, about 750,000 tons of carbon black selling for $50 to $60 per ton was produced in the United States in 1945. This tonnage is insignificant compared with the total production of coal in the United States, but a very tidy tonnage, together with the coal necessary to operate the process, for any mine operator fortunate enough to obtain a method of producing a better carbon black from coal. From the point of view of tonnage, the manufacture of coke of various kinds and its by-products is at present the most important source of carbon chemicals from coal. Nearly 20 per cent of the coal mined in this country is used for this purpose. A large proportion of the coke is used for the production of iron and steel, but even in this operation a considerable part of the coke is used for a chemical purpose; that is, the reduction of the ore to metallic iron. In addition, large quantities of coke are used in manufacturing many important products that find their way into the market. POSSIBILITIES OF ACETYLENE One of the important chemicals manufactured from coke is calcium carbide, from which many products are made. One of these is acetylene. This hydrocarbon can also be manufactured from natural gas or from waste oil-refinery gas and' these industries will probably offer competition for the manufacture of acetylene. Zinc is one of the effective elements introduced to enhance the strength of aluminum. This strengthening is principally attributable to the high solid solubility of zinc in aluminum and the pronounced variation of solubility with temperature. Consequently an accurate determination of the solid solubility curve is desirable. The solid solubility relations have been studied by numerous investigators. Shepherd1 first established the existence of a solid solution region at the aluminum end of the diagram (-v phase) by specific volume and microscopic determinations. Bauer and Voge12 published a constitutional diagram which showed the limits of solid solubility as determined by thermal and microscopic methods. Hanson and Gayler3 presented the aluminum-zinc diagram which is now most generally accepted (Fig. 1). Chill-cast samples were given thermal treatments designed to obtain equilibrium conditions, quenched, and microscopically examined. The solubility was placed between 15 to 20 per cent at 60" C., 20 to 22 per cent at 140" C. and 36 to 38 per cent at 270" C. Sander and Meissner decidedly modified the limits of the -y phase field of Hanson and Gayler's diagram by using similar methods on chill-cast specimens annealed for a shorter period of time. Tanabe,s utilizing dynamic hard-ness, electrical conductivity and dilatometric measurements of specimens at temperature, obtained values comparable to Hanson and Gayler's at room temperature, but appreciably lower at higher temperatures. Nishimura6 concluded from age-hardening results of aluminum-zinc alloy chill castings, which had been quenched from 400" to 500" C., that the solubility of zinc in aluminum at room temperature is less than 5 * Metallurgical Division, Aluminum Research Laboratories. 1 E. The conservation of mineral resources as a public policy question has received a great deal of attention in the area of petroleum and practically no attention in other mineral areas, except, of course, soil and water. Some insights into mineral conservation problems and how these problems can be approached in the social decision-making process are significant. THE MEANINGS OF CONSERVATION Conservation means many things to many people .2, 11 Too often it is a label attached to a proposed program or policy to add respectability and to gain public acceptance. It is a term applied to specific resources in some contexts and to resources generally in other contexts. The oft-quoted comment of President William Howard Taft that conservation is something everybody is for, no matter what it means, succinctly illustrates the confusion over both the meaning of the concept and the policies required to implement a conservation program. This confusion goes quite deep and is more than a matter of semantics or emphasis. For example, the efficient exploitation of a mineral deposit which might be applauded as good conservation in terms of that mineral, might well result in destruction of or harm to the environment which might be viewed as bad conservation. Economics provides some tools to help solve this sort of problem, but there may be fundamental differences in value systems among groups in this society, so that ultimately society must collectively make a subjective political choice as to what is good or bad conservation policy.a An Economic Definition of Conservation The economic concepts of conservation have more relevance and are more easily applied to minerals than to many other natural resources. This does not mean that economics goes all the way in understanding mineral conservation, but at least it provides a framework for analysis which later can be altered to include noneconomic variables. Perhaps the greatest confusion in discussing mineral conservation arises in attempting to relate purely physical concepts with economic concepts. An economist is interested in maximizing or conserving values; he is not interested in maximum physical recovery or utilization. He wants to know the costs and benefits of using, or not using, resources. The economic theory of mineral-resource conservation can be labeled variously as the theory of exhaustion, the theory of resource exploitation, the theory of resource utilization, or simply as a special case of the broad theory of capital.4,28 Consideration of these labels illuminates the concerns of the econo-

INTRODUCED in 1946 to serve a need in power- plant operation, closed-circuit TV has been used by well over 200 organizations in approximately 25 different industries. Known as industrial television, or simply ITV, it can be described as a private system wherein the television signal is restricted in distribution, usually by confinement within co-axial cable that directly connects the TV camera to one or several monitors, Figs. 1, 2. The picture is continuous and transmission is instantaneous, permit- ting an observer to see an operation that may be too distant, too inaccessible, or too dangerous to be viewed directly. Destructive testing or the machining of high explosives can now be conducted hundreds of feet away by personnel who still have close control through the eyes of the TV camera. It is also possible for one man to control operations formerly requiring the co-ordinated efforts of several workers. For example, at a large midwestern cement plant conveyance of limestone from primary crusher to raw mill and loading into five storage bins once necessitated the work of two men, one having little to do but prevent spilling of material by manually moving the tripper on the belt conveyor as occasion required. TV cameras mounted on the tripper now provide bin level indication to the conveyor operator at the crusher position so he is able to control the entire loading operation remotely, Fig. 3. By means of a switch, the picture from either camera is alternately available on a single viewer, or monitor, Fig. 4. Each camera is mounted on the tripper by means of a simple adjustable support and looks down into the bin, which is identified by the number of cross members on the vertical rod. Each associated power unit is located on a platform above the camera, Fig. 5. This centralized control by means of TV often has produced superior results, and in many instancés saving in operating costs has been sufficient to write off equipment costs within six months to a year.

IT has long been known that the density of a metal usually decreases with cold-work. Thus O'Neilll observed as early as 1861 that cold hammering of commercial hot-rolled copper is accompanied by a decrease of density of 0.2 per cent, and that subsequent annealing restores the original density. The origin of this density change, however, has remained obscure. In particular, experiment has not yet decided whether it is due to the presence of small cavities and an increase in inter-granular surface or to an actual expansion of the lattice itself. This uncertainty in the origin of the change in density is a reflection of our uncertainty as to the changes induced in a metal by cold-working. One school regards cold-working as a breaking up of the original grains into a large number of perfect crystallites somewhat randomly orientated with respect to one another.2 According to this viewpoint, the mere introduction of a large intercrystallite surface induces a net volume expansion. Another school regards cold-working primarily as a distortion of the grains. It is not obvious that this second viewpoint will lead to a net volume expansion. The purpose of the present paper is to show that this is indeed the case, and that this expansion is of the right order of magnitude to explain existing experimental data. The physical basis for the association of an expansion with distortion lies essentially in the variation of the elastic moduli with volume. This variation is considerable. Thus from Table I we see that a I per cent increase in volume for the case of copper will decrease the bulk modulus K by 10 per cent, the shearing modulus µ by 3.8 per cent. If we thus twist a rod through a given angle, we shall do less work upon it if it increases slightly in volume, thereby reducing the torsion modulus that involves as a factor the shearing modulus. A general principle3 in physics states that the rod will so adjust itself as to have a minimum potential energy consistent with the end restraints. It will therefore expand. In order to obtain a quantitative comparison with experiment, we follow Maier4 in comparing the lattice expansion with the latent energy of cold-work. This latent energy has been measured directly by Taylor and Quinney5 on copper rods subjected to torsion, and may amount to as much as 15 per cent of the total work done upon the specimens. RECENT contributions to the literature relating to the problems of coal mine management have discussed the pros, and cons of unionism among the miners as bearing upon the immediate problems of the industry, but have devoted singularly little thought to the underlying causes, and the fundamental reasons. for the remarkable growth of union sentiment among the miners, a growth paralleled only in the case of the railroad workers. It is all very well to revile their organization, its obvious stupidity and stubbornness, its multitude of economic and social crimes, but it is also well to realize that there have been deep-seated causes for all these things, causes that, while operating in all industries and amongst all workers, have in none of them found the optimum conditions for development such as exist in the coal mining industry. The rise of the United Mine Workers of America to a position of importance in the industry synchronizes roughly with the introduction of short-time operation; of course seasonal shutdowns and slow-time working have always been evident in our bituminous fields, but these evils have grown steadily worse since 1895 and the U. M. W. of A. has grown steadily stronger; yet short-time operation alone cannot account for this tremendous growth for, witness the signal failures that have always attended the attempts to organize the harvest workers, the fruit packers and other highly seasonal workers.

THE fundamental hydrodynamic principles governing the production of oil from wells have been carefully studied and evaluated by many investigators. These prior studies are quite complete and cover virtually the entire field of oil production and recovery.1 One of the most impor-tant measurements in production studies is that of the bottom-hole pressure at various rates of production.2 It is the purpose of this paper to outline the technique and economics of fluid-level measurements as applied to pumping wells and to review briefly other methods for obtain-ing bottom-hole data. The applications of bottom-hole pressure or fluid-level measure-ments are based on simple hydrodynamic principles. Under equilib-rium conditions, pbh = hd + pg + pch [ l] when pbh = bottom-hole pressure, lb. per sq. in. absolute, h = height of fluid in well, ft., d = average fluid density, lb. per sq. in. per foot, pg = weight of section of gas column 1 in. square from fluid level to casing head, pch = casing-head pressure, lb. per sq. in. absolute. In words, equation 1 states that the bottom-hole pressure is equal to the weight hd of the column of fluid plus the weight of the column of gas between the fluid and the casing head plus the casing-head pressure. At moderate rates of flow, the rate of production is approximately proportional to the difference between the reservoir, or static bottom-hole, pressure and the flowing or producing pressure; i.e.: Q = c(pr - pbh) [2] pr = the reservoir pressure, c = the constant of proportionality. However, at production rates approaching zero and also at high rates the proportionality may break down. By combining equations 1 and 2 the

In this article the author describes when and where each system is used, the advantages and disadvantages of both, and future planning and proposed changes in haulage at IMC. The haulage system at the International Minerals & Chemical Corporation (IMC) potash mine near Carlsbad, N. M., reached a turning point in December 1956 with the introduction of rope-suspended belt haulage. In fact, IMC pioneered the use of this type of belt in the potash industry. Since that time belt conveyance has been employed as an extension of the rail system but not as a replacement of the main rail haulage. IMC's potash mine is located in the Permian Basin, approximately 20 miles east of Carlsbad in Eddy County, N. M. The 800, 850 and 900-ft levels have been exploited. From these levels over 60 million tons have been extracted. The two ore minerals are sylvite (KCl) and langbeinite (K2SO4. 2MgSO4). The principal gangue mineral is halite, with minor amounts of polyhalite, kainite and leonite. Langbeinite is mined on the 850-ft level and sylvite on the 900. The 800-ft level, with both langbeinite and sylvite mineralization, is idle. Mining heights vary from 54 in. to over 10 ft. A room and pillar mining system is used. Geologically, mining is done in the Salado salt formation. The U.S. Geological Survey has classified the 900-ft sylvite level as the first ore zone and the 850-ft langbeinite level as the fourth ore zone. A method is given for predicting the complete gravity drainage characteristics of arbitrarily long columns from centrifuge drainage measurements on reconstituted core samples. Oil residuals corresponding to hundreds of years of normal gravity depletion can be obtained in a few hours on the centrifuge. The gravity flow rate at any stage of the depletion process may be determined from the time correlation derived, and experimentally checked, in this study. INTRODUCTION Apart from the original observations of Muskat et al1, research publications2,3,4 on the subject of gravity drainage have been largely concerned with establishing in detail the saturation, S as a function of the height, z, in a draining column at any given time, t. Some form of numerical integration must be employed to obtain production rates and cumulative production even when S(z, t) is known. Furthermore, the relevant experimental work has been concentrated on drainage of a single wetting liquid from unconsolidated media. Since oil production usually concerns the drainage of a partially wetting liquid from consolidated media, in the presence of connate water, and since it is unlikely that sufficient information exists to establish S(z, t) in detail for any natural reservoir, the published research work appears to be, at best, only qualitatively applicable to production problems. With this in mind, the present study was undertaken by the writer. Experiments were planned whose results would have two advantages over existing measurements: 1. Observations were to be made on specific reservoir rock, reconstituted with formation water and formation oil. This would reduce their generality, from the research viewpoint, but increase their utility for production purposes. 2. The measurements were to be self-integrating, i.e., the phenomena were to be described and interpreted in terms of cumulative results. THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT It was commonly known that centrifuging a liquid bearing porous medium increases the drainage rates and minimizes capillary end effects. The specific problem lay in selecting an acceleration, a, such that the mean residual saturation of a model cylinder was equal to the residual saturation of an arbitrarily long prototype column when the latter was drained by earth gravity alone. The physical conditions required to permit a valid scaling of model drainage time, tm with prototype drainage time, t, may be stated as follows: (a) At t = tm = O, So = Smo; (b) At t = tm? 8 Sr. = Smr.; (c) For all intermediate values of t and dS/dt=dsm/dtm whenever S = Sm; (d) S(z) = Sm(z) = a constant when t = tm = 0. 1 Here S = T I S(z)dz, where h is the length of the « Jo cylindrical column being drained and the subscripts S,Sm, and refer to model, initial, and residual systems, respectively. Lead-refining practice at the Bunker Hill differs to some extent from that of other United States refineries using the Parkes process, in that the Bunker Hill has reverted to a custom used years ago of making two kinds of skims, or crusts, in the desilverizing kettles. Also, this was the first refinery to adopt the liquation process for silver skims as developed in Australia. Both of these ideas were brought to the attention of the operator by H. S. J. Sommerset, in the summer of 1924, while he was visiting metallurgical plants in the United States, when he was general superintendent of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty., Ltd., of Port Pirie, South Australia. Since Mr. Sommerset's visit, United States patents on the liquation process have been issued to George Kenneth Williams, of Port Pirie, South Australia. At the Bunker Hill, the lead bullion is conveyed from the blast furnaces to the refinery in brick-lined cast-steel pots, each having a capacity of 5 tons, by a 20-ton electric crane, to which is suspended a Fairbanks-Morse suspension-type scale on which the gross, tare and net weights are obtained. The bullion is poured from the small bullion pots into either one of two kettles of 105 tons capacity, and when a kettle is entirely filled the heavy dross is removed by skimming it into a 5-ton pot suspended by the crane. The crane operator becomes proficient in the manipulation and a kettle is skimmed in a very short time. After the kettle is skimmed clean the bullion is pumped to a kettle of the same size alongside, where the bullion is cooled until it has almost frozen. By using two kettles for the drossing operation, one to accumulate the bullion where the heavy dross is removed, and then pumping to a clean kettle comparatively free of hangings, etc., it is possible to reduce the copper content much lower than if only one kettle is used in the operation. Measures appropriate for the control of the silicosis hazard in mining cannot be formulated precisely, but sufficient knowledge1-l9 has accumulated during the past quarter century to permit the suggestion of useful, though partly empirical, rules for its alleviation. The industrial hygienist today recognizes that the peril incurred by the inhalation of harmful dust is a function of two variable factors—the degree of harmful exposure and the specific susceptibility of the exposed individual to pulmonary injury. Control of the danger arising out of prolonged contact with pernicious airborne particulate matter is consequently best exercised by influencing both of these recognized variables. Obviously the problem has two broad aspects—one, medical; the other within the province of the engineer. I—Factors Comprising Degree of Individual Susceptibility Thorough investigations conducted among miners who have labored for years in the presence of recognized silicosis hazards usually reveal an impressive difference in the injury incurred by men whose exposure to dust has been nearly identical. After a quarter century underground, one individual is short of breath and incapacitated with miners' complaint, while a fellow workman suffers no pulmonary embarrassment and is in good health. Physicians ascribe this oft-observed difference in reaction to individual susceptibility and express a universal regret when they deplore the fate that chose to make the predisposed youth a miner rather than a farmer. To trust the health of miners to fate at the present time is even more unfortunate, because many of the factors that influence man's susceptibility to dust are known, and can be accurately determined by competent medical methods. Among the most important factors comprising susceptibility to injury by dust are the anatomical peculiarities of the individual's respiratory mechanism, his physiological response to the inhalation of dust, his previous dust, exposure, the existence of pulmonary infections or other pathological processes in his lungs, his age,

Many writers, in discussing defects caused by oxidation and gassing of bronzes and red brasses advocate substantially the same cure for both. But from its nature, oxidation cannot take place if there is an excess of fuel in the furnace, while the gases absorbed by some alloys are products of incomplete combustion of the fuel. Hence the metal can be either oxidized or gassed, but it is doubtful whether these actions can take place simultaneously. Oxidation can be easily overcome by the use of deosidizers or it may be avoided by protecting the molten metal with suitable fluxes. Absorption of gascs is more difficult to overcome: the regulation of the air and fuel, so as to produce complete combustion, and the protection of the bath by mineral fluxes arc the most important factors. Gas expulsion, resulting in gas holes, porosity, unsoundness, and swollen or cauliflower-headed risers, is said to have several causes. One writer1 lists the most common causes in the order of their importance, as follows: Superheated metal, dirty or slaggy furnace conditions, using metals low in quality or those previously subjected to bad melting practice, poor grade of fuel, use of newly lined or damp ladles, indiscriminate mixing of scrap or illogical combinations of metal. Superheating the metal usually occurs when the heat is ready to be poured but for some reason must be held in the furnace. In this case, a careful furnace tender tries to avoid overheating the metal by keeping a mild fire; that is, a reducing fire which, unfortunately, results in gassing the metal. A dirty, slaggy furnace may result in gassing the metal by retarding the heating and prolonging the time necessary to bring the metal to the proper temperature, thereby increasing the chances of gassing in uncertain furnace atmosphere. Development in the upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1944 resulted in the discovery of 19 new fields as compared with 11 during 1943. These discoveries include 10 oil fields, one dry gas field, and eight gas-condensate fields. Drilling During the year 590 wells were drilled as compared with 418 drilled during 1943. Of these operations, 485 wells were drilled in proven fields, with the following results: 281 oil wells, 22 condensate wells, one dry gas well and 141 dry holes. The remaining 105 wells were wildcats, of which 19 were producers. The geological distribution of these discoveries was as follows: In 1944, production amounted to 178,-522,630 bbl., which was an increase of some 31,670,384 bbl. over the 1943 figure of 136,852,246 bbl. These figures include both condensate and oil production, as separate figures are not available. Wildcatting in the area was more successful during 1944 than in 1943 as the following comparison of number of wells drilled illustrates: Discoveries during 1944 Smith Point, Chambers County.—Standard Oil Company of Texas completed its No. I State, sec. 109, on Feb. 15, 1944, in a Frio sand at 8135 to 8146 ft. The well flowed 250 bbl. of 42º gravity oil through an 1/8-in, choke. Gas-oil ratio was 800 to I; tubing pressure, 1100 bbl. Four other oil wells and one gas well were completed during the year. This discovery does not appear to be of major importance. The producing area lies on the upthrown side of a large fault. North Winnie, Chambers County.—Sun Oil Co. completed No. I P. E. Dougherty on Apr. 27, 1944, from the Frio, through perforations at 8757 to 8759 ft. The initial production was 154 bbl. of 38.3º gravity oil through an 1/8-in. choke. Gas-oil ratio Was 2526 to 1; tubillg Pressure, 2280 1b.; casing Pressure, 1225 lb.; total depth, 9519 ft. Three other wells were drilled during the Year. This discovery is on the downthrown side of the major Winnie Stowell fault, and increases in magnitude the already large producing area along this fault. Compressed air has been and is still very extensively used in connection with mining-operations, but its application in the past has been almost entirely confined to supplying power to underground machinery. Its introduction was due to the difficulty of taking care of the steam which is exhausted underground, rather than to any advantage in efficiency to be gained by its use. The ease with which electric power may be carried to the remotest parts of the mine and the high efficiency of the electric motor have long been appreciated by mine-operators, and electric power is now extensively used underground in the more recent developments, while many of the compressed-air engines in the older workings are being rapidly replaced by electric motors. Recently, however, it has been suggested to use compressed air for driving the large shaft-hoists, the air for the engines being supplied by electrically-driven compressors, and an installation of this character is being erected at Butte, Mont. It is the object of this paper to compare the compressed-air system of hoisting with the various electrical systems, from the stand-points of first-cost and cost of operation. However, before entering into a discussion of the various systems, it will be well to consider briefly the conditions affecting the choice of a system of hoisting in which electricity is the ultimate source of power. The power required by a mine-hoist is extremely intermittent and fluctuates between very wide limits, the all-day average consumption of power not exceeding from 5 to 15 per cent. of the maximum demand during hoisting.
