Masjid-i-Sulaiman Field.—During the past year, drilling activities have been limited to repair work. No new developments of importance can be recorded in production technique. Fall of dome pressure is maintained at the 1 lb. per sq. in. per annum rate mentioned in previous reports. Acid treatment of wells is being increasingly used and for wells in fissured areas has been very successful. Such wells have been converted into first-grade producers with substantial drops in bottom-hole differential pressures. The effect of acid treatment has been to increase the flowing lives of wells so treated. The normal procedure consists of threo treatments of 500 gal. commercial acid diluted 100 per cent but success has been met with fewer applications. The policy of returning products to the resorvoir has been continued. The total quantity of products returned since the policy was commenced in 1929 now amounts to approximately 30 million barrels. Haft Kel Field.—The drilling of the main Haft Kel structure for production purposes has now been completed. Production and control wells have been completed to meet the rate of production anticipated over the next few years.

IT is proposed to consider here only comparisons made between results obtained when the materials employed are precisely the same, two furnaces at the same works for example, or the same furnace under different conditions as respects temperature of blast, method of charging, etc. With this limitation, the most important point in the comparison is the amount of fuel consumed per ton of iron. This, in fact, is the only item in the prime cost of the iron which can properly be said to vary in consequence of changes in the furnace process ; for of the other principal items, the ore used per ton of iron, and also the amount of fluxing material, will depend on its richness, which, under the assumed conditions, will be practically invariable when taken over any considerable period; the labor cost also, from its nature, should be very nearly constant when estimated on the ton of iron. This paper deals with frequency distributions in the field of mineral resource evaluation when a grid is superimposed on the study area and metallogenetically significant attributes are coded with respect to the cells of the grid. It is shown that the parameters of a negative binomial distribution for frequency of mineral deposits per cell can be derived from the parameters of a gamma distribution for the coded attributes. It is also shown that an exponential model for spatial correlation of cell values and Matheron's discrete Gaussian model for indirect transfer functions may provide a suitable methodology for relating cell value distribution to cell size.

It is suggested that at high temperatures both sulfur and iron combine with oxygen. Iron may precipitate at the high temperatures as the oxides of iron, and sulfur also in combination with oxygen as the low solubility sulfates of barium, strontium, calcium, and potassium (alunite). At lower temperature the precipitation results from change of sulfate sulfur to sulfide sulfur, and the iron precipitates as the sulfide.

Lead concentrates from Kuroko (black ore) mines, which contain 4-7% Cu, 55% Pb, 3-777, Zn, and 0.5-0.9% As, are pretreated by a hydrometallurgical process before electric furnace smelting with other lead resources from Kuroko. The hydrometallurgical pretreatment involves sulfuric acid leaching in the first stage and ferric leaching in the second stage. This paper describes the short history of lead recovery from Kuroko and the performance of laboratory tests and pilot plant and commercial operations.

The Mine Planning System consists of two parts: 1. A Sales Forecast (Sales Planning) 2. A Production Planning. The mathematical methods of the sales forecast are the exponential smoothing and a method with Markov-Chains. By these methods the quantity of material (ore, coal) will be calculated for the time planned. These quantities constitute the points in the production-planning. In the production-planning , special kinds of networks are used for calculating the resources-equipment required, labor and costs. A special routine optimizes the sequence of the mining areas within the mine on the basis of the lowest costs. The resources can be limited. The activities will be shifted when the demand exceeds this limit. The basis of the production-planning are computer files, in which the geological data and economical evaluations are stored.

The smoker, Monday evening, was an unusual success. It was held in the beautiful gold room of the Congress hotel, which was very elabo-rately decorated with American flags. More than 500 were present. The gallery was filled with ladies, who responded to the request of the song leader and helped in many ways to grace the occasion. The enter-tainment, was a varied one and was original with the Chicago Committee, which deserves great credit for the unusual success of the event. Al-though it was mostly funmaking, Dr. F. B. Cottrell and George S. Rice of the Bureau of Mines gave some very interesting talks, illustrated by flags and moving pictures, of their trip through Europe since the armis-tice. Mr. Rice's talk dealt particularly with the demonstrative coal and iron regions and Doctor Cottrell's was devoted almost solely to that part of his trip in Northern Italy where he was investigating the application of volcanic steam to power purposes. This steam is derived from boracic-acid springs and helium is secured as a byproduct.

When minerals are mined in arid or semiarid areas where water is at a premium, dry processing is a natural route to take for concentrating or classifying the values. Until recently though, dry processing technique were limited by the lack of suitable equipment. With the advent of the pneumatic pinched sluice at Warren Spring Laboratory, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England, a new tool emerged to fill this gap and it has the potential of providing industry with a high output concentrator or preconcentrator for dry natural ores and secondary materials. The pneumatic pinched sluice gives every indication of fulfilling these requirements with the added advantage that with homogeneous materials-such as crushed limestone or quartzose sands-it may alternatively operate as a high throughput dry classifier or sizing device. An industrial version of the equipment is now being manufactured by Dryflow Separators Ltd., as sole licensee for the National Re- search Development Corporation.

Changes became necessary in dredging methods employed in Idaho through passage of the Dredge Mining Protective Act (1954). Among other provisions, the law requires dredge operators to construct settling ponds of sufficient capacity and character to reasonably clarify the water used in the mining process before such water is discharged into the stream. Porter Bros. Corp., a placer mining company with many years operating experience in Oregon and Montana, became interested in strategic mineral placers in Idaho in 1950 when it was learned that prospectors had discovered a radioactive mineral deposit in Bear Valley Creek, 95 miles northeast of Boise. The company acquired mining leases and proceeded with exploration and development work on the property. After extensive research had resulted in the determination of successful separation processes, contracts were negotiated with the federal government and deliveries of columbium-tantalum and uranium concentrates commenced in 1956.

At a meeting of the Associated Engineers, with Columbia Section in charge, a discussion of the metric system was led by-Mr. F. A. Ross. While the majority of the engineers present favored resolutions seeking compulsory adoption and use of the system at the end of 1924 it was believed the engineers present should not undertake to speak for the entire membership and upon suggestion of Mr. J. B. Fisken the resolutions were laid over to be acted upon at a later meeting. The resolutions are as follows: WHEREAS the Great War has drawn the United States into a permanent and close relationship with the other nations of the world and opened the way to an unlimited foreign trade; and WHEREAS more than-70 per cent. of all nations have discarded their arbitrary standards of weights and measures and have made the use of the decimal, or metric, system obligatory; and WHEREAS the United States still clings to an antiquated, complex, cumbersome, and wholly illogical system of weights and measures, consisting of a duodecimal and fractional arrangement of arbitrary units, instead of definitely determined and correlated units following the decimal system; and

EXPERIENCE has shown that certain known natural conditions and other indefinite characteristics combine to make a mining area vulnerable to mountain bumps. Some of the known conditions are heavy overburden, an overlying stratum of strong non-elastic rock, a structurally strong coal seam that does not crush easily and yet is the weakest stratum in the series, and a floor stratum of more than ordinary firmness. The indefinite characteristics could include resistance of top or bottom of a coal seam to lateral flow, effect of immediate top and bottom strata, nature of the coal seam, and other factors about which very little is known. It is in this area that exhaustive study is needed to achieve positive control of the dreaded mountain bump hazard.

Digital and analog computers are being used at an accelerated rate for the control of processes. A digital computer can store information concerning a process and when it is fed certain information concerning the material to be processed it can rapidly scan its "memory" and put out information concerning the settings on the plant controls to be used to handle the feed material. An analog computer does not ordinarily store information. It uses an electronic analog to simulate part of a process and the electronic analog can detect changes in the process, and by actuating controls, it can keep the process operating under desired conditions. In order to utilize the speed at which these computers operate it is desirable to obtain information concerning the behavior of feed material as near the head of the process as possible so that changes in operation of the process can be made before the material has passed through the processing equipment.

A lead-zinc orebody, in fairly strong quartzite and with a dip of 35° to 60°, is block-caved by use of scrams in a stair-step pattern up the ore footwall. Scram linings to handle coarse muck and permit the use of folding scrapers are developed by the use of end-grain wooden blocks to reduce maintenance and keep operating cost to a minimum.

The article by Benavides and Schuster provides an in-depth study of this transportation alternatives for a four-mine complex in western Kentucky. The examination of aerial tramways was not undertaken as an alternative solution. We feel this is an oversight since industrial ropeways are competitive with both belt conveyance and overland truck hauling. In fact, there are aerial tramway system, operational today, which are 100 years old and operating with some original components. Maybe unfortunately, there are no fixed rules or guidelines whereby the most cost-effective means of transporting and handling material for a given situation may be selected. Each situation must be evaluated m the variables that influence the selection of the desired alternative can be clearly defined. However, there are in-place industrial ropeway system that have proven economically feasible over a range of 1.6-50 km (1-31 miles). The more difficult the terrain, the greater the cost efficiency.

The objective of this paper is to present a practical method for calculating minimum safety factors of rock slopes with a horizontal layer of weak material. It is demonstrated that the most critical failure surface, in this case, is a bilinear surface composed of a horizontal failure surface inside the weak layer and an inclined surface inside the rock. The model presented in this paper shows that with a good approximation, the change in slope for the bilinear failure surface may occur directly below the slope crest. This assumption simplifies the calculation of safety factors considerably, because the most critical failure surface is located directly, and the trial computations for a number of failure surfaces are not necessary. Special parameters involved in slope stability analyses of highwalls in open-pit mines are discussed and, by an example calculation, the applicability of this method is demonstrated.

This paper will discuss an application of multivariate discriminant analysis to aid in predicting mineral potential from regional geological data and information on mineral deposits, with particular emphasis on the use of the logistic discriminant function. Logistic discriminant analysis is a generalization of standard discriminant analysis in that the discriminant analysis becomes applicable under a much wider class of distributions. As a practical example, the standard multiple discriminant analysis and the logistic discriminant analysis are applied to data from the Bathurst area in the Appalachian region of Canada and the results are compared with one another.

BEFORE I go any farther, I wish to show you the different kinds of guns, as I have been able to understand them from the finished works, for no one is found to have written or spoken of this. To my knowledge, it is not universally known who was the inventor of this horrible and fearful instrument. It is believed that it came from. Africa (communication to the Secretary*) :—About fourteen years ago, in southeastern Missouri,I used a method for the wet determination of lead which closely resembles the modified sulphate-chromate method described by Mr.. Guess. The principal difference, however, is, that after dissolving the lead chromate in hydrochloric acid, the chromic acid is determined by means of a standard solution of ferrous sulphate. The method, which I believe is still in use in southeastern Missouri, was found to be convenient and accurate for the determination of lead in the ores and various products of the mills and furnaces in that district, but it was never used for complex ores. IF it be admitted that the use of the metric system of measurement is desirable, and that it will be well, as urged by one of our engineering societies, to show upon all our plans or drawings a metric scale in addition to a scale of inches, then it becomes important to introduce some ready means of drawing these scales. For many present purposes it is quite sufficient to space off and to draw them with the common dividers and the right-line pen, but if the number of drawings made or copied in an engineer's office, and upon which scales must be shown, is more than two or three daily, then some more mechanical or automatic means should be provided. For a great majority of detail drawings, a simple transcript of the surface of a good two-foot rule would answer every purpose, and probably the best comparative showing of the metric scale would be made by drawing a line of millimeters close by the side of the line of sixteenths. The shaft was drilled on US government land m the Piceance Creek basin and was funded by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). It was drilled to 723 m to provide access to rich deposits of oil shale, nahcolite, and dawsonite for geotechnical test work and environmental mining research. Rotary drilling and dual-string, reverse-air, jet-assist circulation methods were used. Drilling required eight months. Site preparation, running, and cementing the casing required another four months. A 2.44-m ID steel welded casing, 508 mm thick was installed and 2.7 kt of cement were slurried and pumped into the annulus.
