How do you make a mine out of 500 000 kg (1.1 million lb) of uranium oxide contained in a low-grade deposit with high clay content? Confronted with these limited reserves and mineralogical problems at France's St. Pierre du Cantal uranium deposit, engineers adopted a rather unusual mill process to keep capital costs to a minimum. Crushing and grinding were eliminated by using a high pressure monitor to slurry ore directly from stockpiles. After mechanical separation of the high-grade fines from low-grade sand, the sand fraction is washed of clay to increase permeability and then it is heap leached. Fines are sent to agitated vessels for acid leaching, and the pulp from this operation is diluted by pregnant solution from the heap leaching.

THE coal-beds of Canyon City are situated six miles below the town, upon the Arkansas River. At this point the Rocky Mountains have thrown out from their main ridge two spurs. The one to the north, containing Pike's Peak and Cheyenne Mountain, is known as part of the "Rim Range;" the one to the west and south is known as the "Greenhorn Range." Against these syenitic mountains, the later rocks are piled and uplifted ; at right angles to the direction of this main uplift is the axis of a lesser plication. On the north, west, and south, the pitch is steep, gradually flattening as it approaches the centre of the basin and rising again to the east at a pitch of about 5", thus forming a perfect basin, the centre of which is only three miles east of the base of the Greenhorn Range.

Since its introduction several years ago in the United States, the high pressure belt filter press has proven to be a highly cost-effective dewatering device in a number of mining and industrial applications. To evaluate the process and economic factors associated with the dewatering of coal refuse, a comprehensive program of laboratory and on-site pilot studies has been conducted. This paper will summarize findings of this study and discuss advantages of the belt filter press over conventional dewatering methods. The conventional means of dewatering thickened coal refuse involves the use of vacuum disc filters or centrifuges. Due to the high amount of energy used to dewater refuse with these devices it was a logical course of action to apply belt filter press technology to this application, since a belt filter press will require less than 3.7 kW (connected).

Lack of a system in scheduling the replacement of capital equipment can result in emergency purchases of units which may later be found unsuitable for the job. New York Trap Rock Corp., which produces crushed stone for use as construction aggregate, was faced with just such a situation some years ago. The company replaced capital equipment only when machinery in use was no longer serviceable, or when there was an obvious need for different equipment. Operating and maintenance costs were generally neglected because an efficient method was lacking. New York Trap Rock has four plants located along the Hudson River, all within 70 miles of New York City. Crushed stone output-6 million tons a year-is moved to markets in metropolitan New York, New Jersey, and Long Island areas by water transport. Customers are contractors with ready-mix concrete and asphalt plants located on the water.

Ceramic projectiles made from 94% to 99% alumina with a nominal mass of 3.1 gms were fired into granite blocks. The average compressive strength of the ceramic was 800 MPa and that of the rock was 135 MPa. Flat, ogive, conical and pyramidal nose shapes were evaluated at velocities ranging from 450 to 1400 m/sec. It was found that the conical and pyramidal nose shapes at the higher velocities did a significant amount of damage to the rock. On the average, they removed 10 5mm3 of rock and were six and ten times better than the flat and ogive nose shapes. It was also observed that increases in volume occur in discrete steps. This process is highly dependent on the ability of the projectile to penetrate the rock.

COAL blending, in the preparation of coal before coke making, is so commonly practiced as to be almost universal. But the reasons underlying this practice, the benefits resulting from it, and the materials used in blending vary widely. This paper will outline the various phases of the subject and present information which may be correlated with work that has been done elsewhere. It will deal entirely with work done on the high-volatile coking coals of the western part of the United States, special emphasis being given to the coals of Colorado and Utah.

Stringent environmental regulations, which have limited the use of sludge ponds, coupled with the economic incentive to clean more coal or to add fine coal cleaning additions to existing preparation plants have increased the use of static thickeners in preparation plants. The Lamella Gravity Settler, sometimes designated Lamella Thickener, is a shallow depth sedimentation device which has been applied in a variety of industrial process and wastewater control projects in place of the conventional raked thickeners. This paper presents the theory and design of the Lamella Thickener, as well as describing the operating results from several full scale installations in a variety of Appalachian preparation plants.

(written discussion *).-The principle involved in the Crowe vacuum precipitation process is so elementary and the apparatus required is so simple, that the whole subject affords scant material for a technical discussion. As. one prominent Colorado metallurgist recently remarked when asked to contribute to this paper: "The Crowe process is the biggest step forward since the early clays of the cyanide process, but there is nothing to write about; just put it in your mill and try it." The writer confesses to a similar feeling, but having been closely identified with the process since its inception in 1916, he is perhaps in a position to at least comment on the theory involved and to record some of the results that have been achieved in actual practise. In practising the Crowe process, the solutions to be precipitated are first vacuumized in a suitable dispersion tower; that is, thin films of the liquid are subject to the action of a vacuum within a receiver. The Morris mine, operated by the Inland Steel Co., is located about 5 miles west of Ishpeming, Mich., near the west end of the Marquette Range. The ore, a soft hematite, is mined by sublevel caving and stoping. A considerable amount of surface water flows down through the cave into the ore or percolates down along footwall dikes in the iron formation. Because of this water, the broken ore cannot be stored in the raises and must be scraped from the sub directly into the tram cars. Efficient tramming, therefore, requires close coordination between the scraping and loading operations. In the past this has been hampered by the lack of a suitable means of communication between the mining contracts and the drawpoints on the tramming levels. Among the devices that have been tried unsuccessfully are flashing lights, air whistles, and electric buzzers.

Since coal is one of the largest cost items in the production of electricity, its analysis for heat value and composition has been the subject of intensive study. Sampling started with crude hand methods, out of the railroad car or barge or from moving conveyor discharge, and progressed to reliable mechanical in-plant sampling systems. The mechanical system takes its sample from a falling stream of coal such as a conveyor discharge or crusher discharge hopper. But this has a disadvantage in that the identity of the coal is lost. Coal is shipped to the user in train-loads, often made up of shipments from various mines. When the cars are dumped into hoppers and the coal conveyed to the power station, the various shipments become mixed because residual coal remains in hoppers and chutes.

ATLAS shaft was sunk to explore at depth a portion of the eastern end of the dry belt, or silver belt, of the Coeur d’Alene mining district. The Atlas mine is a mile east of Mullan and is on the south side of the Osburn fault. Equal partners in the venture are Hecla Mining Co., Newmont Mining Co., New Jersey Zinc Co. and Atlas Mining Co., the financing being equally shared by Hecla, Newmont, and New Jersey Zinc. As outlined the project had as its goal deep exploration of prominent structures developed in the Atlas in upper levels. Plans called for deepening the shaft from the 800 level to the 2400 level with subsequent drifting, crosscutting, and diamond drilling on the 2400.

INTRODUCTION Forecasting of metal and mineral prices is a complex and hazardous undertaking. In order to accurately forecast prices, the complexities of both marketing and production must be modeled for each commodity. Even with the most detailed model, the economy may change unexpectedly, invalidating the forecast. Because of these factors, this chapter will not attempt to present specific methods for price estimation. It will, however, review the fundamentals of price forecasting as applied to planning and design of the final pit shell. Recognizing that no price estimate can be exact, sensitivity analysis will be reviewed as an approach to coping with these unknown variations.

THE hot working of chromium was first reported by Hunter and Jones; who used small pellets of the material obtained by the reduction of chromium chloride with sodium. Later, the working of chromium at 600° to 1100°C was reported by Marden and Rich,2 and at 1250°C by Kroll3 The hot rolled material3 had a Brinell hardness of about 150 (62.5 kg, 2.5 mm ball, 1 min) and was brittle at room temperature. Except for that associated with hardness indentations, no plastic flow in chromium at room temperature has been reported to the author's knowledge. Studies described here have shown slip markings in chromium after deformation at room temperature.

An understanding of the nature of yield zones surrounding coal mine excavations is fundamental to the design of mine support systems. Various methods have been designed for investigation of underground rock masses and an extensometric technique, the Magnetic Rod Extensometer, has been developed to overcome inherent design limitations in existing equipment of this type. This paper refers to the prototype form of the extensometer and details changes designed to overcome a variety of drawbacks indicated by routine use of the equipment. The principal change has been one of manual to computerised data acquisition and presentation in the laboratory phase of the system. This has dramatically reduced the time taken to process underground measurements and produce numerical and graphical results. The revised Magnetic Rod Extensometer represents an integrated instrumentation system that combines speed and accuracy in all areas of data handling.

The object of this paper is to describe some efforts and observations by the writer relating to this subject. Althongh the usual type of' blast-furnace is a most efficient device for smelting and melting purposes, it is not suitable for utilizing the cheaper grades of fuel, such as coal-slack and certain gaseous fuels. This problem not only involves the consideration of the furnace as a suitable apparatus, but also embraces the consideration of the chemical and calorific properties of the proposed fuel. In the hearth of the ordinary blast-furnace an extremely high temperature is maintained. This extreme temperature is due to the complete combustion of the fuel in the hearth, and before the gases reach the zone of fusion their temperature is reduced, by the absorption of carbon, 2300 degrees Fat).
