Because common salt, sodium chloride, is necessary to all animal and much plant life, it is probably the most widely used of all mineral commodities, except for water. Nevertheless, of the total salt consumed, only 7% is used for food, including animal food. Two-thirds of the total is used as chemical raw material, principally for making such basic chemicals as chlorine, caustic soda, and soda ash. Other uses are for road thawing (16%) and water softening. Some 162.5 million tons of salt were used, worldwide, in 1972 (Table 15.4F.1). Production is from bedded salt deposits, salt domes, and evaporation of brines, including solar evaporation of seawater. Production is worldwide from at least 20 countries, of which the United States, China, USSR, the United Kingdom, and West Germany are the leaders. Consumption increases about 7 % annually. Reserves are plentiful: Other important sodium salts are soda ash (sodium carbonate) and salt cake (sodium sulfate). Soda ash comes mainly from the Solvay process (70% ) , which uses salt, limestone, and ammonia as raw materials. A large and growing portion of United States production is from mining large bedded deposits of trona, a natural hydrated sodium carbonate and bicarbonate found in Wyoming, and from brine evaporation in California. Soda ash is used for glassmaking, phenol, soap, detergents, and bleaches. Half of the United States salt cake used is a byproduct from rayon manufacturing. (written cliscussiont).-I am inclined to the view that the change in physical properties encountered in the material with which the authors are working is due to the relief of internal strains. The statement, on page 1.098 of their paper, calling attention to the fact that this phenomenon disappeared when the material was rolled into 1 7/8 -in. square billets is of particular interest. It is certain that the internal strains set lip by cooling in a small billet of this size would be much less than those produced in a billet having a larger cross-section cooling under the same conditions. The statement that the physical properties of a given test bar were materially changed by standing has been brought to my attention in connection with the testing of gun forgings. I have made a number of observations on forgings produced at Watertown Arsenal to ascertain whether any change in ductility was produced by the aging of the test specimens. The results were always negative, but this can be explained by the fact that ii gun forging is generally a forging that has been quenched and subsequently drawn at a relatively high temperature.

An experimental air-slide classifier1 has been applied to the de-dusting of ground dolomite in an attempt to produce a grade of -30 +150 mesh (B. S. Sieves) material from a raw material containing 30-35% of the -150 mesh fraction. Air flows varying between 1.5 and 2.5 cu ft/sec sq ft of screen area were used. The throughput of dolomite was between 80 and 100 lbs/h. inch of screen width. The size analyses of the de-dusted material and of the original dolomite are shown in table at right. The proportions of the +100 mesh material in the feed and in the de-dusted products have been used to calculate materials balances, on the assumption that there is no loss, as dust, of this +100 mesh fraction. By interpolation, it can be shown that a de-dusted product recovery of 68.5% will be obtained at an air flow of 2.13 cu ft/sec sq ft of screen area. The feed material contains 68.5% of +150 mesh material, so that if the de-dusting gave a perfectly sharp cut, the product would contain no material less than 150 mesh. Further calculations based on the size analyses, show that, at an air flow of 2.13 cu ft/sec sq ft of screen air, the -150 mesh fraction in the de-dusted product will fall just below the specified maximum limit of 5%.

DRAINAGE water from coal mines is probably the most serious water pollution problem today, varying in importance according to location of the mines and geological structure. Drainage may be either acid or alkaline in character. Acid discharge, the most severely detrimental to a stream, is caused by natural oxidation of the sulfuritic material (FeS2) in the strata associated with the coal seam. Since the acid is the result of a natural reaction the acid water differs because it does not cease with abandonment of the mining operations. There is no known economical method of neutralizing acid mine water or any practical method to prevent oxidation of exposed pyrite. Since production of acid from a mine does not stop when mining stops, the total quantity produced depends entirely upon the excavated areas. The increasing volume of acid water in many mines has greatly increased operating costs. Pumping is expensive and acid mine waters are destructive of all equipment, especially metals in pumps and piping, and necessitate the use of corrosion-resistant materials. Discharge of the acid mine drainage into streams neutralizes their normal alkalinity, causes them to become acid, and produces an environment unfavorable for aquatic life and unsuited for industrial or domestic use without costly treatment.

THE application of electricity in the extraction of metals has hithcrto been chiefly confined to the electrolysis of dissolved or fused compounds of these by varios methods. The power of electric currents to generate intense heat in their passage through a resisting medium has, however, long been known, and the late W. Siemens thereby succeeded in fusing considerable quantities of steel. But it was reserved to Messrs. Eugene 11. and Alfred H. CoWles, of Cleveland, Ohio, to take a new step in the metallurgic art by maKing the heat thus produced a means of reducing in the presence of carbon the oxides not only of the alkaline metals, but of calcium, magnesium, manganese, aluminium, silicon, and boron, with an ease that permits the production of these elements and their alloys with copper and other metals 011 a commercial scale. In the apparatus devised and now employed by the Messrs. Cowles, a column of fragments of well-calcined charcoal, so prepared and arranged as to present the requisite electrical resistance, is imbedded horizontally in finely pulverized charcoal, and covered by a layer of the same material coarsely broken, the whole being arranged in a box of fire-brick, covered with perforated tiles and opened at the ends to admit two carbon electrodes an inch and a half in diameter.

What is believed to be an Aztec, or possibly a Toltec, mirror, is claimed to have been taken from one of the tombs at Cholula, near the city of Puebla, Mexico, where there is a mound of considerable size, in fact a hill, largely constructed of adobe bricks by the Toltecs, or by those who antedated them. The mirror is formed from a mass of what is evidently pyrite, is nearly a true hemisphere, having a diameter of 3 1/8 inches, and weighs 19 ounces. From its unusual size it is believed to have been hung about the neck of an idol. Other Aztec mirrors of smaller dimensions, and of less weight, so as to be carried about the person, are known; but the one exhibited, being heavy, was apparently intended to be held in the hollow of the hand, in which it fits, and may have been utilized to flash heliotropic signals. The entire surface, both of the base and of the convex portion of the hemisphere proper, has been beautifully polished, but, for some reason, the mirror has been shamefully abused, the edges having been broken, and the center of the base defaced, possibly by some one testing it for precious metals. INTEREST naturally attaches to fissuring and subsidence of the earth's surface, whatever the cause may be, and the induced movement and fissuring of the impervious strata overlying an oil sand is of even greater practical importance because of its bearing upon the recoverability of the portion of the oil not already extracted or extractable by ordinary production methods. It is probably true that significant ground movement induced by oil production occurs only in oil fields in relatively young formations, where the oil comes from incoherent or only slightly cemented sands and oil-soaked clays, but inasmuch as a great proportion of our "gusher" wells produce from "running" sands and yield a large part of the total oil output, it seems worth while to make an effort to inspire the collection and recording of data indicating the nature and magnitude of oil-field subsidence, both surface and subsurface.

The Haile mine is situated in Lancaster county, South Carolina, twenty miles south of Lancaster. The topography of the country is characterized by low hills rising generally less than two hundred feet above the many small creeks which traverse the surface. The road from Kershaw, the nearest railroad station, 3 1/2 miles from the mines, leads through woods with sandy soil and cottonfields. In many places it lies on the bare rock and shows that the adjacent covering of soil and earth is usually not more than one foot thick, and often less. This covering is to a great extent sand. Close by a bridge, about one mile from the mine, large round boulders of diabase may be observed. The country-rock seems to be exclusively talcose slate, with a general strike varying from N. 45' E. to N. 70' E. EXPERIMENTAL work on the concentration and agglomeration of low-grade iron ores was started many years ago at the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota by E. W. Davis and his staff. From these laboratory results and the work of 0. G. Lellep, consultant for the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., there were indications that the use of a downdraft continuous- grate furnace, patterned from a conventional-type sintering machine, would be practical. Consequently, a pilot plant was designed and constructed by the joint efforts of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. and Arthur G. McKee & Co. at Carrollville, Wis. Several years of work resulted in plans to build a large-scale pilot plant for commercial application. Such a pilot plant, built at Babbitt, Minn., by the Reserve Mining Co., was designed to produce 1000 tpd. Sufficient metallurgical and operating data were accumulated to permit the successful application to the design of a commercial plant of any desired capacity. Based upon this data, a pelletizing plant having a 3 ¾ million ton per year capacity was erected by the Reserve Mining Co. at Silver Bay, Minn. and started operation in October, 1955. Provisions were made in the design to permit future expansion to a capacity of 10 million tons per year.

The communication which I hare to lay before my fellow-members of the Institute, is no elaborate paper, nor the statement of any great discovery; it is simply the record of convenient methods of conducting topographical survey?, and of keeping the notes of the same; methods that have grown out of practical experience, and have saved me many a day's labor by facilitating office and field work, and at the same time secured a greater degree of accuracy than is obtained by the methods now in general use. I assume it as granted that no topographical map is worthy of the name, except it represent the elevations and depressions of the surface by means of horizontal or contour lines. In the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain, the contour lines are traced for every fifty feet vertical height, I believe, by running out the line with level and compass through all its meanderings on the surface; this, of course, is a very tedious, though accurate process, but " in the woods," where many of our surveys have to be made, it would be practically impossible. As of Dec. 31, 1935, 22 drilling rigs were in operation, of which 9 were at wildcat locations and the remainder were being used in new drilling in proven fields; in addition, 25 workover rigs (exclusive of cleanout rigs) were operating, all in the major fields. Preliminary estimates indicate that world consumption of petroleum and related fuels in 1938 will be close to 1,908,000,000 bbl., or approximately 7,000,000 bbl. less than in 1937. This total does not include military consumption in foreign countries, which for obvious reasons is not made public. Foreign military consumption in any one year, however, is approximately represented by the difference between the total production of petroleum and related fuels and the "partial total" consumption above noted, after adding any decrease, or subtracting any increase in stocks in the United States. Fig. 1 illustrates this "difference" and shows that in 1937 and 1938, owing to the wars in China and Spain and the possibility of armed conflict in Central Europe, foreign military consumption—and possibly additions to foreign stocks—increased nearly 70,000,000 bbl. in 1937 over 1936 and remained at this high rate throughout 1938. No official information on foreign oil stocks is available to the writers. Table 1, recently published, purports to give the oil in storage in some of the European countries, but it is not known whether the figures include oil stocks for military purposes. It should be noted that with the annexation by Germany of Austria and part of Czechoslovakia the consumption of the country has increased to 53,000,000 bbl., which is about 36,000,000 short of the German produc-

Production in Colombia attained a new high during 1940 when it reached a total of 25,607,976 bbl. Of this amount, the Tropical Oil Co. produced 21;426,492 bbl., including 268,586 bbl. of petroleum condensate, and the Cololmbian Petroleum Co. produced 4,181,484 bbl. from its Barco property. The wildcatting program of different companies in the Magdalena Valley that was initiated during the previous year was continued but with results that were decidedly disappointing. Ten wells were drilled in the Magdalena Valley between the approximate latitudes of Puerto Wilches and Puerto Berrio and nine of these were dry; the tenth was a small producer of no commercial importance. The prospects of finding new fields in the Magdalena Valley thus received a serious setback, since some of the tests drilled were on well developed surface structures. The prospects of the Valley, however, have by no means been exhausted and drilling operations are being continued on other prospects. One additional wildcat was drilled outside the Magdalena Valley on the Colombian Petroleum Company's Barco Concession, which brought to 11 the total number of wildcats drilled in Colom-bia during the year. No devclopment of major importance has been made in the south central fault-line district of Texas during 1939. Four new fields have been discovcred, all of which appear to be of minor importance, with small wells in the Navarro sand, the Taylor marl or the Austin chalk. Drilling along the fault line has not developed any new prospects in the Edwards lime, the most prolific producing horizon of the district. At the close of the year, a few deep tests for lower producing horizons have been projected and should prove to be of interest, and plans are under way for further development of the Pearsall field, which has been under the control of a single company until recently. Production from the 46 producing fields was maintained at 8,460,000 bbl. for the year, a decrease of approximately 400,000 bbl. under 1938. This decrease is due in part to natural decline of production and in part to decreased allowed production. Approximately 55 producing wells were completed on proven acreage in the Darst Creek and Salt Flat fields. No new lease plays were made during the year, although approximately the same amount of land, 600,000 acres, remained under lease during the year. Some geophysical operations of various types were carried on along the fault-line area itself and also in the Edwards plateau and in the area south and southeast of the main fault line.

The area that produces Pennsylvania grade, which includes New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and a part of Ohio, increased its production in 1942 about 1,580,000 bbl. over that attained in 1941. Such an increase is substantial for this area, and measured in terms of increased output of lubricants, for which the crude is particularly suitable, it represents a needed arid worth-while addition to the lubricant resources of the United States. The year 1942 was a difficult operating period for most of the petroleum-producing areas in the United States, but the Appalachian region, owing principally to its location, type of operations, and crude value, suffered less from war influences than other areas. The state of Pennsylvania produced 17,823,870 bbl. of crude oil, which is approximately 63 per cent of the total production of Pennsylvania grade in the entire area. Production Bradford Field The Bradford field, which produces almost wholly by water-flooding methods, increased its production nearly 4000 bbl. per day over 1941 despite a very slight reduction in total number of wells completed. Well completions in the Bradford field (in both New York and Pennsylvania) includc both producing oil wells and water-intake wells. About half of the well completions are producing oil wells and the remaining half are water-intake or injection wells. About 10 per cent of the total well completions of the Bradford field were in Cattaraugus County, New York. No segregation of well completions is available, so that precise statistics cannot be given for New York and Pennsylvania.

The restrictions placed on drilling by the Federal Government, which caused a severe curtailment in activity at the beginning of the year, were relaxed somewhat so as to permit the drilling of one shallow† gas well per 40 acres. New wells numbering 574† were drilled for a combined depth of nearly 1,500,000 It., and of this number 131 were dry holes with a footage of slightly over 375,000. Inside locations account for the majority of these totals and the increasing demand for natural gas would normally have increased the number considerably, but many of the independent operators chose to ask for fewer exceptions to Order M-68 of the Office of Production Management, and consequently to curtail the number of wells drilled. Initial open flow of natural gas developed from all operations§ is over 230 million cu. ft. Nearly 191 million cu. ft. of this volume resulted from the 410 new gas wells drilled to horizons above the Lower Devonian, and the footage drilled in these wells accounts for approximately 93 per cent of the total. Shallow Development Oil.—Thirty oil, wells, with a total initial production of slightly over 152 bbl. and a footage of 50.000, were drilled during the § Including deepening wells previously drilled.
