(written discussion ? ).-The only practical method of testing mine air for gas, until recent years, was by the effect of the gas on the flame of the ordinary Davey Lamp, and it is quite surprising how nearly the correct percentage of gas can be deter-mined by many men by observing the behavior of the safety-lamp flame in the different mixtures. Mine foremen frequently guess the percentage of gas to within 0.1 per cent., making certain allowances to cover the dust-laden atmosphere, in which the test was made. It is not meant by this that anthracite dust is explosive, but that its properties increase the length of a fuel cap on an ordinary oil-burning lamp, which, as Prof. -Young contends, increases in height with the proportion of gas and in-creased temperature. Naphtha or benzine-burning lamps have a hotter flame, and, there-fore, are more sensitive so that a smaller percentage of gas can be detected. Some of the fire bosses in this region some years ago preferred the Koehler lamp, while others did not care to use it in their morning examinations. In 1911, when the experimental mine of the Bureau of Mines at Bruce-ton, Pa., was being prepared to be exploded, a large number of mining men went through it to examine the entries, which were lighted by electricity. While so doing, they saw in the face-return-airway a Koehler or Wolfe lamp, that seemed to he burning with difficulty. IN many ways, the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February was the most successful yet held. Attendance surpassed even that of the 75th Anniversary Meeting in 1947 with its international flavor. The number of technical sessions and the number and quality of papers presented almost certainly set a new record. The banquet was the best attended of any yet held even though the price reached a new high. Despite the demand for almost 1700 tickets to the banquet, some felt that the price-$13.50-was higher than they could afford. There are two points of view: One is that this is the big social event of the year for members and that it is worth from three to five dollars more to have it at the Waldorf and to have a luxury menu, as we did this year, with turtle soup, a fish course, guinea hen for the entree, and wild rice (which we understand is $3.50 per lb) for a vegetable. The other point of view is that a seven or eight dollar banquet of more simple food at the Commodore Hotel would more than make up in appeal, especially to the younger and less well-heeled members, what it would lack in glamour.

If 1929 witnessed a growing realization on the part of the oil industry that supply must be balanced against demand, 1930 proved conclusively that excessive inventories constitute a price depressant even with balanced conditions. Increased attention was certainly paid to economic considerations last year, and the achievement of holding daily crude production, with a constantly mounting potential, to levels 500,000 bbl. below the output of the summer before, deserves special mention. The ill-advised accumulation, however, of gasoline stocks, at least 10,000,000 bbl. larger than necessary, nullified the restraint exercised by the producers and finally necessitated drastic downward price revisions. An event of special significance was the appointment by the Federal Oil Conservation Board, last March, of a temporary Committee on Petroleum Economics that attempted a forecast of demand, an estimate of supply, and an allocation of the latter between the principal producing states. Thus for the first time was an economic program for an entire basic industry drafted by an independent body under the auspices of the Federal Government. The report was widely discussed and generally approved, but its schedules were not adopted by the refining division nor by oil producers in the State of Texas until too late to contribute to the industry's prosperity during 1930. If the restraint of November had been exercised in May a profitable year might have been the result: The gasoline price war in California during June, however, illustrated the point that even with a fairly sound statistical position insistent pressure to expand normal marketing outlets must result in losses to all concerned. The balanced program so painfully attained by producers must be maintained by refiners and distributors to be completely effective. Again in November the Federal Oil Conservation Board, acting on the request of the directors of the American Petroleum Institute, called its Committee on Petroleum Economics back into existence to prepare a new estimate for the next six months. An economic program adopted in advance of the winter period of accumulating inventories may aid this large and essential industry toward the profits to which it is entitled

THE increased service demands on some of the products of the National Malleable Castings Co. prompted it about eight years ago to investigate the electric furnace, both in America and in Europe. The process bad' already been sufficiently developed in Europe to lead us to believe that the electric furnace would most nearly meet our requirements. After further investigation and consultation with the highest authorities on the subject, we decided upon the Heroult type as the simplest and most practicable. In 1910, we built a furnace of this type, of 300 lb. capacity, for experimental purposes, and although it was crudely constructed the quality of the material we were able to make justified the installation of a 6-ton Heroult furnace in 1912. This furnace has three electrodes, 17 in. in diameter, uses three-phase, 60-cycle current, and is equipped with Thury regulators, which give us good regulation and a uniform load on the line even when cold melting. The power factor of the furnace is 94 per cent. Since July, 1912, the furnace has been in continuous operation, producing up to the present time, over 20,000 tons of both carbon and alloy steels of varying analyses and of exceptional quality. Both cold-and hot-metal charges have been used, with a power consumption of about 150 kw-hr. per ton in the case of hot-metal charges and from 500 to 600 kw-hr. per ton in the case of cold charges. The electric energy consumed varies according to the final analysis of the steel and the amount of refining required. Too much cannot be said about the refining possibilities of the electric furnace, for no other method of steel manufacture can compete with the electric in this respect.

This paper discusses education and training for economic geologists other than petroleum geologists. Candidates enter economic geology through liberal arts colleges, engineering schools and university graduate study. Whatever their backgrounds, rigorous courses are desirable-now conceded in theory, but not adequately recognized in practice. Besides basic sciences (each studied long enough to give a fair comprehension of its basic tenets), a functional command of English and two modern foreign languages is needed, as well as a broad understanding of mining, milling and metallurgy. A year of economics and finance is recommended. Surveying and drafting are essential skills. Yet geology should be represented in each term; otherwise the initial enthusiasm for the science, once contact is broken, may never be regained. A five-year curriculum is thus designed to take care of all major requirements and culminate in the M. S. degree. This curriculum reduces "cultural" courses below the average liberal arts requirements, but this is regarded as necessary. The pursuit of "culture" is assigned, as in most engineering and medical curricula, to extra college years or extracurricular time. To avoid the danger of over-crowding the schooling, the Doctorate in geology is preferred wherever possible. Its two added years should permit wider professional education; more browsing in "cultural" pastures; due attention to broader social implications; and some training in the research now increasingly required of the mineral industry. "In-course" training through cooperation between school and industry is especially advocated. The Institute should take the initiative in stimulating this practice.

it is an established fact that the collecting properties of xanthates and anionic collectors are dependent on the hydrocarbon chain length. This is ascribed to the greater adsorption densities caused by increasing the xanthate chain length. As batch flotation tests showed similar trends for amines, an investigation of the adsorbing properties of amines was undertaken. Because earlier investigations showed adsorption densities for dodecylamine salts on quartz varying as much as 20 times under apparently similar conditions,1-4 it was decided to make a survey of the changes in adsorption density due to the drying conditions of the quartz. THE importance of making analyses of gases in furnaces which are used for metallurgical purposes is every day growing more and more evident. It is the only method of understanding the reactions that take place in the furnace, and of economically conducting the operations both with regard to the fuel used and the reactions which take place on the bodies to be subjected to the influence of the heat and gases. As a knowledge of the composition of gases is becoming every day more necessary to the proper conduct of furnace operations, it seems desirable that furnace managers should generally know that the analysis of gas for commercial purposes is neither difficult, tedious, or expensive, and that it does not necessarily imply the use of corrections requiring difficult instrumental observations and long and tedious mathematical calculations. Any method, therefore, which will tend to render these analyses simple will also tend to having them made and repeated as frequently as the analyses of the ores and other materials charged in the furnace. They should be made even more frequently, as their composition is affected by any change in the condition of the furnace, and a knowledge of their composition will give a ready clue to the unseen and otherwise not easily detected changes which are taking place. Fuller’s earth is an inexact term applied to certain clays that have a marked ability to adsorb coloring materials from animal, vegetable, and mineral oils. Many clays have this adsorbing power to a slight or very limited degree, and certain other clays, chiefly bentonites, as well as minerals such as bauxite, can be made highly adsorbent by activation with acids or alkalies, but the term fuller's earth is generally reserved for clays that are naturally highly adsorptive. In most fuller's earths and practically all activable clays montmorillonite is a dominant mineral. No definite clay mineral or group is implied in the name fuller's earth, and the distinction between fuller's earth and other clays that have more or less bleaching power is not sharply drawn. The name as generally used has no genetic or mineralogical significance. The fuller's earth produced in the Florida-Georgia district contains the clay mineral attapulgite. This mineral name was first used in 1930 by DeLapparent to apply to a hydrous aluminum magnesium silicate found in the fuller's earth from Attapulgus, Ga., and Quincy, Fla. An essential component of its structure, determined by Bradley in 1940, is that the silica chains of the molecule are arranged similarly to those of the amphibole minerals. The fibrous nature of the lath-like crystals of attapulgite is apparent under magnifications reached by the electron microscope. The ideal formula, [(OH,), (OH), Mg, Si, 0,-4H,O], contains no aluminum, but there is considerable replacement of the magnesium by aluminum. In the classification of clay minerals, attapulgite is associated with sepiolite and polygorskite rather than with mont-morillonite.

Bill S.1431 for the creation of a Department of Natural Resources has received a propitious hearing before the Senate Committee on Government Operations. Interior Secretary Rogers C. B. Morton was one of the prominent witnesses who testified in favor. The department had been proposed, Morton said, with "the conviction that the development of all natural resources would be harmonized with the most practicable possible means to protect and preserve the environment, consistent with the social and economic needs of the Nation." Another opinion on the pro side came from Atomic Energy Commissioner Clarence E. Larson, who said that a "total picture" had become essential to the establishment of a policy for developing energy resources in the best public interest. Commissioner James T. Ramey, on the other hand, was one of the AEC dissenters. Ramey said he believed the reorganization of resource responsibilities would hinder efforts to deal with energy-environmental problems and prevent the use of AEC "expertise and facilities" to the greatest advantage. As Arnold Weber, associated director of the Office of Management and Budget, pointed out, however, retiring AEC Chairman Glenn T. Seaborg is in favor of the new department. Another supporter, and one who can cast a vote on the bill, is Sen. Frank E. Moss. Final Standards for emissions from new stationary sources will be published by the Environmental Protection Agency on October 27. The initial proposals, appearing in the Federal Register on August 17, called for limiting emissions per million Btu of heat input (maximum 2-hr average) to 0.2 lb of particulate matter, and, where solid fuel is burned, to 1.2 lb of sulfur dioxide and 0.7 lb of nitrogen dioxide. While the new rules are mainly for new plants, the EPA is also proposing them for "existing plants which are modified in such a way as to increase or alter. . . their emissions."

Stabilized blast furnace operation at high production rates and reduced coke consumption requires control of the gaseous distribution within the furnace. This can be achieved only by an increased use of agglomerates in the furnace burden, and control of the radial distribution of agglomerates and that of coke in the blast furnace. Dissection surveys of commercial blast furnaces recently conducted by several steel plants in Japan gave much valuable knowledge on the behavior of agglomerates within the blast furnace, specifically in regard to the softening-melting zone. The authors analyzed these survey results in conjunction with laboratory studies on the behavior of agglomerates, then proposed appropriate test methods to determine high temperature behavior. A reducibility test at temperatures over 1100°C, a test for softening and melting under load up to 1400°C, and a test for melt-down characteristics were developed to evaluate behavior of agglomerates in the softening-melting zone of the blast furnace. The high quality of self-fluxing sinter, as compared with pellets, was verified by means of these test methods. The test conditions of the respective test methods were examined in detail.

The law of supply and demand is, in general terms, that law which governs the price of any commodity in an unrestricted competitive market. There are several variables which, for the purpose of this discussion, will be defined only as they apply to the petroleum industry: Production: The volume of petroleum that is moved from leases. Stocks: The volume of petroleum that is in the hands of the tank farm and pipeline companies. Inventory: The value of the stocks at the market. Consumption: The indicated delivery of oil to others than those who hold stocks. Demand: The potential absorbing power of the consuming market. Demand is the expression of the needs of the consumer and may depend on the economic value of the oil to the consumer. In times of low prices, the demand is the same as the consumption but during periods of high prices or deficiency in supply, the demand may be greater than consumption. A general expression of the law is as follows: production or consumption Some relation between stocks and or controls price or demand inventory The Law as Applied to Crude-oil Market The above general expression of the law shows that there are six relations between variables that must be investigated in any attempt to establish the exact status of price control at any time. Production vs. Consumption If stocks of crude oil were very low, so that the flow of oil to the market was directly from the producer to the consumer and not, in a large measure, through stocks, some relation between production and consumption would be proportional to price changes. There are several methods described in the literature for the determination of the order and the rate constant for the flotation of minerals. These often involve some type of computational or graphical procedures. A relatively simpler method developed on the basis of a technique used by Chang" in chemical kinetics is described in this paper. Chang's technique, like most others in chemical kinetics," is based on the law of mass action which states that the rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the active masses of the reacting substances at any given time. Application of this law to the flotation of minerals would involve the adaptation of the terms "flotation" for "chemical reaction" and "floatable amount of the minerals" for "the active masses of the chemical reactants." There are indeed a large number of physical processes controlling the actual flotation rate. The most inefficient one of these could be considered equivalent to the slowest reaction in a series of chemical reactions. If variables such as aeration rate and agitation are kept at constant levels, the rate of flotation under free flotation conditions (i.e., conditions under which the suspension is dilute) will be given by the following equation: where C is the concentration of the floatable minerals in the pulp at any given time t, K is the rate constant, and n is the order of the reaction. If we represent the floated fraction of the floatable mineral at time t as m (0 m - 1) and C at t = 0 as Ca, integration of Eq. 1 yields

In mining, all unit operations are closely interrelated, and the results of blasting are probably the key factor within that sequence. The drilling program prior to blasting is just as dependent upon the desired rock fragmentation as are the loading, hauling, and mechanical crushing operations which are economically and technically influenced by the results of blasting, namely, the size and scatter of the product. What is known today as optimum blasting is the process of designing a blast in order to obtain a certain degree of fragmentation so that overall mining costs are minimized. Applying this criterion often results in a different program than when an individual blasting pattern is chosen only on the basis of the lowest operational cost for that pattern, disregarding what comes before or after the blast. [Fig. 1] shows the characteristic variation of mining unit costs with the degree of fragmentation, or the maximum size of blocks obtained from blasting. From the figure, it can be seen that optimum breakage must correspond to the lowest total costs, but reducing drilling-blasting costs only does not achieve such an optimum solution. Methods of designing surface or underground blasting operations should comply with the optimization criterion, but this compliance is feasible only if a detailed mining system analysis is available. Therefore, predictions of costs of loading, transporting, and mechanical breakage of ore as a function of its size will define a narrow range of variation for drilling and blasting parameters in order to get the minimum total costs.

Recently Levine applied the Conrad-Wiedersich17 equation where H is the activation enthalpy, v the activation volume, T* the effective shear flow stress, T the absolute temperature, and ? the strain rate, to an analysis of titanium single-crystal data. The activation energy as a function of testing temperaturs obtained from specimens oriented for single (1010) prismatic slip is shown in Fig. 12. This diagram indicates a different linear dependence of H on T in the temperature interval from 220° to 300°K than from 0° to 220°K. Levine interpreted the break in this curve as indicating a change in the thermally activated mechanism controlling the flow stress. The purpose of this communication is to point out that the data in Fig. 1 is not consistent with the concept of a flow stress controlled by a simple thermally activated mechanism between 220° and 300°K. An industrial mineral, says the Glossary of Geologic Terms, is "any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metallic ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones; one of the nonmetallics." Probably most geologists and engineers would accept this simple and straightforward definition, at least as a general statement. On analysis, however, certain anomalies crop up. For example, it may be considered arbitrary to include industrial diamond and corundum, but to exclude their precious varieties, gem diamond and sapphire. So the present volume has a section on gems and gem materials, in spite of the definition. Another problem arises when we try to define precisely what is metallic and what is nonmetallic. Bauxite and ilmenite certainly qualify as metallic ores, but both are also raw materials of important nonmetallic substances; hence they are included in the book. A third anomaly is that, by common consent of geologists, engineers, mineral economists, and others concerned, the term industrial minerals may include not only rocks and minerals but also certain manufactured products like cement and lime, and even mixed groups of natural and artificial products, such as abrasives and refractories. Thus the central realm of the industrial minerals is clear enough, but its boundaries tend to be indefinable. Since a definition that allowed for every irregularity in the outer fringes would be excessively un- wieldy, the one quoted above may be considered satisfactory. The expression industrial minerals is commonly equated with nonmetallics, and with the somewhat more precise phrase industrial minerals and rocks as in the title of this book.

The recent activity of numerous foreign mining companies in the once flourishing tin fields in Cornwall, England has resulted in renewed interest in the evaluation of hypothermal tin deposits. These deposits are mainly narrow tabular bodies and are usually steeply dipping. They exhibit thermal zoning the mineralization changing from lead/zinc through copper to tin with depth. The tin zone virtually never exceeds 1,000' in depth and the ore shoots within this zone tend to be erratic and localized. The grade which is presently considered to be economic is about 0.7% Sn. , this means a concentration of about l% cassiterite (the only economic mineral) which, being twice as heavy as the gange, represents only. 5% of the lode volumetrically. Within the lode, only one third may reach this economic grade and values within the shoots can range from 100% cassiterite to zero over a few inches. The enormity of the problem of evaluating such a deposit has not been fully appreciated by the companies involved whose experience has, for the main part, been in larger and more predictable ore bodies. This paper attempts to put these problems into perspective and out- lines the useful applicatations of statistical and computer techniques. It also stresses the need for enlightened interpretation of data by men familiar with the problem and that even in this day and age, educated, intuitive deduction should not yet be relegated to the limbo of alchemy and witchcraft.

Demand fob Motor Fuel, 1936 During the year just closed the domestic demand for gasoline exceeded 481 million barrels. This compares with 434,810,000 bbl. consumed during 1935 and indicates an increase of 10.46 per cent. Export shipments amounted to 27,831,000 bbl. while in 1935 they totaled 30,613,000 bbl. Total demand, therefore, was 509,422,000 bbl., or 9.16 per cent above the 465,423,000 bbl. of 1935. Following are the figures for several years: Already we are supplying gasoline domestically and as foreign shipments at a rate almost 25 per cent greater than our low level of 1933. Before giving figures for 1937, I should like to spend a moment or two in discussion of gasoline inventories, from the point of view of minimum working stocks and other requirements and of probable actual levels. Visitors frequently put the question to Kalgoorlie gold miners; "Why don't you concentrate your mining operations?" A mine may be drawing ore from over a hundred different working places which are spread out over several thousand feet of strike and on many different levels. The answer to this question is that "finished" can rarely be written for a section of the mine. The intricate web of mineralization in faults, shears and fractures is an endless puzzle, each solution opens up new avenues to be explored. After the last ore is taken from a stope, a program of drilling may continue for several weeks on different possibilities. Perhaps no ore is discovered and drilling is abandoned, but it is not unusual for another search to begin later in that same area on a new theory with successful results. Wherever a slightly richer mineralization is found, it is needed to "sweeten" the mill heads. Over seventy years ago gold was discovered in the dry wastes of Western Australia. Rich deposits of alluvial gold were found at first and as these were worked out they led to the discovery of the lode ores, which were leaner and harder to extract.

PORE formation during solidification has recently been studied theoretically by Piwonka and Flemings.1 For the ordinary conditions of cellular solidification, these authors state that there is a difficulty in explaining the formation of pores. The difficulty arises because the conditions necessary for pore formation are not those obtained during cellular growth. Therefore Piwonka and Flemings1 had to examine various unusual possibilities in order to explain the apparent presence of pores in a cellular substructure of aluminum, taken from Doherty.2 For aluminum, Doherty and Davis3 have developed a pitting technique to reveal substructure, which depends upon the condensation of vacancies from supersaturated solution after quenching. This technique as further developed4 was used to study solidification substructures. In the case of striations, delineation of the substructure is produced by the absence of surface pitting after quenching: in the vicinity of the striations the dislocations which constitute this substructure are sinks for vacancies. In the case of the cellular substructure the experimentally observed effect is the same. However, in this latter case Doherty and Davis4 suggested that micropores associated with the cellular substructure were the agent responsible for providing sinks for vacancies. This interpretation seemed necessary for the cellular substructure because no misorientation arising from a dislocation array could be observed. INTRODUCTION Economic deposits of phosphate are found at shallow depths (80 ft.) in central and northern Florida (Figure 1) where they have been mined since the late19th century(l).The present (1978) mining rate is approximately 40 million short tons per year of product (called “phosphate rock1”), which represents approximately 80% of the total U.S. production and 30% of the world production. The principal use of Florida phosphate is for the manufacture of fertilizer. There are 10 major mining companies and 20 active mines in Florida at the present time, strip mining approximately 5000 acres per year. The ore, known as "matrix," consists of gravelly clayey sands containing phosphate minerals (principally carbonate fluorapatite), quartz, and clay minerals. The clay to phosphate ratio is generally about 1:1 by weight and the sand to phosphate ratio ranges from, 1:1 to about 3:1. Mining is done by large electric draglines, which strip and cast the sandy overburden soils, generally 10 to 40 feet deep, and remove the matrix, generally 10 to 25 feet deep. Dragline bucket capacities are generally 20 to 45 cubic yards, but range up to 65 cubic yards. Mining cuts are usually 300 to 500 feet wide and up to several thousand feet long. The ore is cast into an earthen sump where high pressure water guns are used to slurrify it. Centrifugal pumps move the slurry through a pipeline to a beneficiation plant where the phosphate rock is separated from the waste sand and clays.
