The objective of this papef is to summarize briefly the practical use of rock mechanics in design and construction of various types of structures. These range from foundation for industrial facilities, nuclear power plants, bridges and dams to tunnels and underground caverns. The use of rock mechanics has varied from performing a few laboratory unconfined compressive tests on core samples to complete field and laboratory tests for underground power caverns. The primary difference between the rock mechanics studies we hare for construction projects and those most commonly found in the literature is that our tests must provide immediate answers to specific questions facing a design or construction engineer. For example, when we make a plate-bearing test we arrive at a load-deformation relationship. We realize that this is not a true modulus of elasticity. Yet, when considering the resistance the rock will provide against forces occurring in a pressure tunnel it is a far more useful value than the true modulus of elasticity of the rock. Another example of this difference in interest is in the use of flat jacks. Many people criticize the use of flat jacks because they measure the stresses in the disturbed zone very near the surface and do not represent the undisturbed stress condition in the rock. However, in actual construction it is frequently those near-surface stresses with which we must cope. We are interested in both the stress conditions present prior to excavation and those as modified by construction of an exploratory adit or drift. Fundamentally, we are interested in the practical application of rock mechanics in the solution of problems of design and construction of civil engineering works.

Morrow Point Dam and Power Plant are principal features of the Bureau of Reclamation's Curecanti Unit of the Colorado River Storage Project. They are under construction on the Gunnison River 20 miles east of Montrose, Colo. Johnson-MK is the prime contractor, and represents a joint venture of Al Johnson Construction Co., Minneapolis, Minn., and Morrison-Knudsen Co., Inc., Boise, Idaho. The power plant will be housed in an underground chamber in the left abutment, approximately 250 ft behind the original canyon wall. The chamber is 206 ft long and 57 ft wide. The distance from the foundation to the spring line of the roof arch varies from 51 ft in the service bay to 120 ft in the control bay. The roof arch has a rise of 16 ft. The longitudinal center line of the chamber is orientated east-west with the draft tubes discharging nearly due north. Access to the power plant chamber was possible through the cable tunnel, access tunnel, two draft tube tunnels, two penstock tunnels, exploratory tunnel, which became the ventilation tunnel, or the grouting and drainage tunnel leading to the dam. (See Fig. 1.) The shortest and fastest access was through the cable and access tunnels, and the contractor drove these two tunnels simultaneously. The cable tunnel and cable gallery excavation exposed a transverse section, at the west end of the chamber, that was 15 ft wide and extended from the crown to 5 ft below spring line. It was here that arch excavation began. The first 34 ft of advance along the arch was driven on three headings, and the muck was removed through the cable tunnel. Meanwhile, the access tunnel was completed, and a raise was driven from its crown to intersect the advancing arch excavation near the longitudinal centerline

IN a paper read before the Institute of Metals, Rosenhain 1 described a new type of furnace designed primarily for the thermal analysis of metals by the inverse-rate method and used by him in the metallurgical department of the National Physical Laboratory with considerable success. In his discussion of this furnace, Rosenhain pointed out some difficulties met with in its operation, such as uniformity of rate of heating or cooling being inadequate for the degree of accuracy aimed at. To overcome this difficulty, he suggested, in place of motor propulsion, a gravity drive controlled by a"hydraulic cylinder with a relief valve whose width of opening can he regulated to allow of any desired rate of motion." The authors, in constructing a thermal-analysis furnace of Rosenhain's type, have therefore followed this suggestion and also added certain features that increase somewhat the convenience and simplicity of its operation. Requests for information regarding this furnace and the highly satisfactory results obtained from its use, it is believed, justify describing its construction and operation in sufficient detail to make possible its duplication or improvement. Description of Furnace.-The details of the furnace construction are shown in Fig. 1, which is drawn to scale. The heating tube is of /4 in. (6.35 mm.) wall "alundum" heated at the upper end by seventeen turns of 0.52 mm. platinum wire, which is coated with "alundum" cement supplied for this purpose. The cement coating is essential when a high temperature (over 1000° C.) is required, as it prevents hot spots with the resulting burning out of the heater. This platinum-wire winding, unlike "nichrome," is entirely satisfactory for temperatures of at least 1000° C. It has been maintained at that temperature continuously for 2 months and shows no signs of deterioration. This temperature is maintained by a current of 5 amp. drawn from 30 volts potential, so its necessarily continuous operation is quite economical.

During the past eight years, in trying to estimate world consumption of petroleum and related products, the authors have been unable to account for all the supplies available in any one year. There has remained at all times a balance, which at first was thought to represent almost entirely additions to stocks in foreign countries. But as this discrepancy continued year after year-over 148,000,000 bbl. in 1937—it became unreasonable to conclude that corresponding additional foreign storage capacity was continuously being made available. It became therefore clear that the balance in question was due to other causes than to additions to stocks. Last year Mr. A. G. White, Chief Economist of the Petroleum Economics Division of the United States Bureau of Mines, pointed out to one of the authors that an unknown and important factor in consumption of petroleum and related products is to be found in the requirements for military purposes in foreign countries. This paper is the result of Mr. White's timely suggestion. There are no reliable data available either on the storage capacity, and therefore oil stocks, or on the petroleum consumption for military purposes in foreign countries. This information is so closely related to national defense that its divulgation is forbidden. One can therefore but surmise as to these facilities and needs in line with the relative strength of the military land, air and sea forces of the various countries. The authors have assumed many of the component factors that go to make the tables herein presented, such as fuel consumption of fighting ships in relation to tonnage and horsepower, gasoline consumption of air fleets in relation to number of planes, and the consumption of petroleum products by mechanized armies; but in making these assumptions they have availed themselves of the advice and counsel of those whose wide experience in these questions make their views authoritative. There have been many attempts to devise formulas for flowing efficiency and flow friction of oil-gas mixtures in oil-well flow tubes. Actually, however, flowing efficiency is rarely any real concern of the oil producer and flow-friction formulas contain so many unknown variables as to be of little, if any value. The production engineer is generally concerned with producing as much oil as possible with a minimum expense per barrel, and with the lowest possible net gas-oil ratio. These ends frequently are opposed to each other and the gas-oil ratio usually is sacrificed. In competitive operations, such as in town-lot fields, high current production is the sole interest. In conservative operation the greatest possible amount of oil obviously should be produced by natural flow unless the net formation gas-oil ratio can be improved by circulating gas. In practice this condition frequently exists. It would be a great advantage if the flowing condition of a well could be analyzed to determine the best possible producing status. Anticipating the death of a well so that gas-lift could be started immediately after the death, or preferably before, would save both production and expense. Frequently it happens that circulating gas fails to help a flowing well, or will not flow it after it has stopped flowing naturally. A knowledge of the laws governing flow would save considerable expense in testing such cases. A predetermination of probable pressures and amounts of circulating gas needed to flow wells and give best possible producing conditions would help in designing compressor installations. The optimum producing status of an oil well generally may be obtained by the conditions that subject the producing formations to the least possible back-pressure. This pressure is made up of the weight of the fluid column, frictional resistance to flow and the reaction from the acceleration of the fluid mass. A mathematical calculation of these components to arrive at a condition giving a minimum summation is impractical. Formulas would be complex and the results untrustworthy because it is impossible to assign proper values to the many variables involved.

DuRing the year of 1937, the East Texas district produced 211,194,467 hbl. of oil and marketed more than 22,329 million cu. ft. of gas; 3377 oil and gas wells were completed. During this same period 106 exploratory wells were drilled, discovering three new oil fields and one gas-distillate field. Fields East Texas Field.—The East Texas field again led the district as to production and number of wells completed. During the year, 2420 oil wells were completed, making a total of 24,382 producing wells, which produced 171,336,854 bbl. of oil, for a total of 1,156,352,834 bbl. since the beginning. During the year the average bottom-hole pressure dropped 49 lb., making the average bottom-hole pressure 1119 lb. Approximately 3500 wells are making salt water, 20 per cent of them making over 80 per cent of the water. During the month of December, the daily average production of salt water was 119,000 barrels. Talco Field, Titus and Franklin Counties.—The Talco field produced 9,780,948 bbl. of oil during the year, from 637 wells. During the year 472 wells were completed. All of the wells are pumping and 241 are making salt water. This field has followed a normal development and did not exceed the estimated number of acres reported last year. Rodessa Field, Cuss and Marion Counties.—The Rodessa field was extended about 13 miles southwest into Marion County, which added approximately 4000 acres to the field. During the year 260 wells were completed, making a total of 416 producing wells, which produced 12,646,-970 bbl. of oil. The author was unable to obtain figures for the amount of gas produced. The field has two gasoline plants, which had a daily average of 16,558,000 cu. ft. of gas during December, averaging 0.83 gal. per M cu. ft. As of Jan. 1, 31 wells were making salt water. The Exposed Treasure gold-mine has, for the past four years, been one of the largest producing mines of Southern California, its annual output havirig con~tituted I per cent. of the total gold and silver production of the entire State. At the present moment the property is idle, owing to the large quantity of water encountered on the lower levels, which will require the installation of a powerful pumping-plant before operations call be recommenced. Moreover, a prompt change in the character of the ore has occurred at water-level, which makes imperative an extensive campaign of development in the region of the un-oxidized ores before a plant adapted to their treatment call be definitely decided upon. The character of the changes encountered in these deeper ores makes the geology of this deposit a matter of importance, riot only for the immediate district, but for the desert region of Southern California in general, where many mines exist having in the oxidized belt conditions that, in many respects, resemble those in the Exposed Treasure mine. The deposit is situated in an apparently isolated butte about 2.5 miles south from the town of Mojave, on the Mojave desert. The butte, though apparently isolated, is in Fact geologicallg part of an extinct volcano, known as Soledad butte, which rises out of the plain 1.5 miles SW. of' the mine, to an altitude of 4,650 ft. above sea-level. Other buttes also rise from the desert plain toward the south and east, and again to the westward, all being closely related geologically to Soledad butte,—the whole constituting a single system as to origin and time. THE behavior of mixtures of immiscible liquids in porous solids is of rapidly increasing interest to those engaged in the production of petro-leum. The operation of artificial water-floods and the control of natural ones immediately raise questions concerning the fundamental nature of such processes. Moreover, it is now recognized that often water occurs dispersed throughout the rock from which the oil issues into the well,1 and thus tends to move toward the well simultaneously with the oil. The work reported here is a laboratory investigation of the simultaneous, steady-state flow of oil and water through the same column of uncon-solidated sand. It is thus directly related to the situation in which water occurs in oil-producing sands; it may have less direct implications for the displacement of oil from sands by water. However, it is to be clearly understood that the experiments to be described were performed pri-marily to obtain information of a more or less fundamental nature, and are not an attempt to reproduce, on laboratory scale, any part of an oil field. The dynamic behavior of a system in which oil and water are flowing simultaneously through sand is best described in terms of its "effective permeability" to either phase. For incompressible fluids flowing through a system of uniform cross section, the effective permeabilities to the two phases, in darcys, may be defined by the equations:

Tantalum and columbium occur together in tantalite and columbite ores, which may be considered as ferrotantalate (FeTaz06), with part of the iron and tantalum replaced by manganese and columbium respectively, the general formula, therefore,becoming (Pe, Mn)O.(Ta, Cb)2Os. The ratio of tantalum to columbium is not fixed; the amount of tantalum may vary from one-third to three times that of columbium. Minerals having a high content of tantalum are called tantalite, while those possessing larger amounts of columbium are classified as columbite ores. These minerals are found in pegmatites and often occur in veins associated with cassiterite and wolframite, and may contain small amounts of tin, tungsten, titanium and si1ica. l Methods of Extraction Several methods have been proposed for the extraction of tantalum and columbium from their ores, among them being: 1. Fusion with Potassium or Sodium Bisu1fate.—The finely ground ore is fused with potassium bisulfate, after which the mass is boiled with water and the fusion repeated several times. The residue finally resulting is digested with ammonium sulfide to remove traces of tin and tungsten, boiled with hydrochloric acid, filtered and washed. These oxides are then dissolved in hydrofluoric acid, the silica evolved as silicon tetra-fluoride and the hydrofluoric acid solution used for the potassium double fluoride separation of tantalum. 2. Fusion with Sodium Carbonate and Sodium Nitrate.2—This fusion renders the tantalum and columbium soluble, and they are extracted

The prices of crude petroleum and its derivatives have shown an upward trend from 1915 to 1920, and a downward trend from 19'20 to 1923, see Table 1. Over the former period, oil prices were dominated by the rapidly increasing demands and inflation incident to the war and its aftermath, while over the latter period oil prices were influenced at the outset by deflation and then by the conditions of overproduction that have characterized the past three years. he purpose of this paper is to analyze the broader features of the more recent price movements in the petroleum industry and to relate these features to basic economic conditions in the industry. Index Numbers of Oil Prices The analysis and comparison of price movements may be facilitated by converting actual prices into relative prices, or index numbers, with 1913 taken as a base of 100. In this way, the various price groups are expressed as percentages of the 1913 prices and may thus be readily compared with one another or with the average prices of other commodities similarly expressed. Table 1 gives the index numbers representing the average prices of crude petroleum, gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil, lubricating oils, and all commodities. The last named is the index of all commodities as published by the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and is widely accepted as the official measure of the general price level. The index numbers of oil prices were calculated by the writer from weekly quotations published in trade journals. Fig. 1 shows in graphic form the trend of oil prices by months over the period 1920-23. The present work has two objectives: first to develop an experimental method which would give some new information on the micromechanism of the reduction of oxides by gases at elevated temperature; second to clari,fy the intermediate phases of the W-0 system, formed during the reduction. A Galvanic cell with the solid electrolyte , ZrO2 . CaO, was imbedded in powders of W03, CuO, or Fe20s with two measuring electvodes and with a reference electrode. The change of the intraparticle gas composition was measured at An oxygen concentration cell consists of two electrodes separated by an electrolyte through which the transference of electrical charge is accomplished predominantly by the migration of oxygen ions. THE sampling and estimating of, the orebodies in the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Butte, have been made a part of the work of the geological department. The wisdom of this assignment is apparent, considering the organization of that department, the nature of, its records, and the scope of its regular work. In the first place, the district is divided into units of two or three mines each and a geologist is assigned to each group. His trips to all the working places are frequent and he follows the mining operations closely. His notes are graphic and detailed. In the office, he posts his notes on the standard maps and sections and on special maps for correlation purposes. With the approval of the chief or assistant chief geologist, he recommends development work underground and watches its progress. This gives the geological department a precise knowledge of the character of each orebody. Sampling is done by one or two samplers at each mine working under a chief sampler stationed in the geological office. The chief sampler has access to all the office maps and is in frequent consultation with the geologists; his instructions to the samplers are issued with the approval of the chief or assistant chief geologist. Not only is it important that the geologic information be used to direct the sampling but the reports of the samplers and the records kept by their chief are useful to the geologist, who needs them in his work of I estimating ore reserves and deciding on recommendations for development work. The sampler, moreover, is at the mine every day and makes a daily report, which keeps the geologist in close touch with 'the progress of development work. The sampler is attached to the mine office and thus comes under the jurisdiction of the operating department. In fact, any special orders prepared by the chief sampler are submitted to the general superintendent, after approval by the geological department. The mine foreman may.

THE spirit of this age encourages the substitution of mechanical for hand labor wherever possible, experience proving that the employer, employer and consumer share alike in the resulting benefits. Through the efforts of the inventor, millions of the laboring class have been raised from being mere contributors of muscular force to be brain workers and directors of those ingenious contrivances now so widely used in the various branches of agriculture, manufacturing, printing, etc. While the genius of invention has accomplished so much in other departments, it seems remarkable that she has not long ere this descended into the coal mine with her wheels, levers, and eccentrics, and provided the toilers there with some device by which their unusually laborious work could be lessened. Until within a very few years, however, little special attention was given to this subject, owing largely, no doubt, to the fact that coal miners as a class were prejudiced against innovations of this kind and ignorantly clung to muscle as the only means of wresting from nature her treasures stored within the coal measures. Thanks, however, to the enterprise and skill of some Scotch and English mine proprietors and inventors, the present decade has seen rapid strides in the right direction, and mechanical coal mining has become a fixed fact in some portions of Great Britain. Making her acknowledgments to the mother country for these earnest and successful efforts, America now comes forward with the Monitor Coal-Cutter as the result of a trial on her part to advance the common cause of economical coal production; for upon cheap fuel the future greatness of both nations largely depends. The most important process in a gypsum mill is calcining the crude mineral. There seems, however, to be little progress or change in calcining methods. This would not be surprising if the industry was not, in other ways, developing. The demand for gypsum in its various forms, however, is growing rapidly. The output has more than doubled in six years, while the value of gypsum products, through the introduction of higher priced. specialties like wall board, has nearly trebled in the same period. In other industries, under somewhat similar conditions, calcining in rotating cylinders, either by direct or indirect heat, has replaced the method that still prevails in gypsum mills. Efforts were made to use rotary calciners in manufacturing plaster of Paris in the early days of the industry in America; 25 years ago rotary calciners were in use in Germany. At that time there was great diversity of opinion in regard to their merit. In 1923, the output of calcined gypsum in the United States was 3,101,378 tons. About nine-tenths of this material was calcined in kettles, the remainder in rotary calciners. The ratio was about the same 10 years ago. During these 10 years, rotary calcining made relatively no gains, and there were no important changes in the construction of kettles. In their manipulation, the only change of consequence was in connection with the length of time that the gypsum is left in the kettle. For wall-plaster purposes, all producers who had not previously done so changed from second-settled to first-settled calcined gypsum, thereby reducing production costs and improving the plasticity and sand-carrying capacity of their plaster. Nevertheless, in the few mills in which they were installed, rotary calciners continue to operate, with possibly one or two exceptions, and to be highly successful. In these 10 years, the Cummer type of rotary calciner has disappeared. All rotaries now used are of the cement-mill type with a diameter of 6 or 7 ft. and length of 80 to 120 feet.

WORK on the effect of vacuum heat treatment of 0.040 in. diam sintered and wrought molybdenum wires has been sponsored by the Office of Naval Research at Battelle for the past several years. An electrical resistance furnace' capable of maintaining a vacuum of less than 0.1 micron of mercury at temperatures as high as 4000 °F was used for heat treating the wires. Early in the work, it was found that the introduction of a few microns pressure of oxygen into the furnace resulted in a rapid increase in the oxygen content of the wire specimens and the appearance of a discrete oxide phase. Subsequent elimination of the oxygen atmosphere caused the disappearance of the oxide phase. This was used to determine the solid solubility of oxygen in molybdenum over the temperature range of 2000" to 3000°F.2 It was observed that, with the disappearance of the oxide phase, the wires regained some ductility. Single-phased wires possessed from 5 to as much as 40 pct elongation in 2 in. Later, attention became centered on determining the cause of this wide range in ductility. Wires containing less than 0.002 pct C, less than 0.0007 pct 0, less than 0.0005 pct N, and less than 0.00003 pct H exhibited the erratic ductility noted above. These percentages represent approximately the limit of accuracy of presently available methods of analysis and thus it became apparent that chemical analysis would be of little help in the study. A number of possible explanations for the wide range in ductility were suggested during the course of the work. It was first suspected that variations in the grain size of the recrystallized wire specimens might be responsible. Wire from several lots of material was available. One of these lots tended to develop very large grains when recrystallized, the others all developed an ASTM grain size of 3 to 4 when heated above 2700°F. No correlation between grain size and ductility could be found. It was thought that back diffusion of oil from the diffusion pump might cause contamination of the wire, principally with carbon, but when wires were treated without cooling the cold trap in the pumping system,

METALLIC manganese was first produced in 1773, by Sven Rinmann, a Swedish mineralogist. In 1799 William Reynolds, of Ketley, England, obtained a patent on the use of manganese dioxide in the manufacture of steel, and in 1808 an English patent was granted to John Wilkinson covering the use of manganese ore, or manganiferous ore, as an addition to iron ore in the blast furnace for the production of a superior grade of pig iron. Karsten showed in 1816 that manganese increased the hardness of iron without decreasing its malleability or toughness, while it caused pig iron to be more white in fracture and more fusible. The first practical application of manganese to steel-making, however, is attributed to Josiah Heath who discovered in 1839 (less than 90 years ago) that manganese conferred upon steel the properties of being more easily worked and welded under the hammer. When Bessemer invented the pneumatic process of steel-making which now bears his name he was at first successful because, as it afterward developed, he was using. a Swedish pig iron high in manganese. When his supply of this material ran out, he used a low-manganese pig from English sources and failed signally to produce a steel which could be rolled, while his Swedish licensees were continuing their successful application of his method. And it was not until Robert Mushet, in 1856, suggested the addition of manganese in the form of spiegeleisen to the molten product of the converter that success again came to Bessemer. In 1866, William Siemens patented the use of ferro-manganese as an addition to molten steel to counteract the bad effects of sulfur. It was in 1888, that Robert Hadfield published at some length his account of the effect of manganese as an alloying element in steel and described the unique properties of the now famous Hadfield manganese steel containing about 12 to 14. per cent. manganese and 1.25 per cent. carbon.

THE FRENCH occupation of the Ruhr valley and other districts on the eastern side of the Rhine continued during March to be the pre-dominating feature in European affairs. There were sporadic troubles and disorders, but on the whole the Germans were passive while the French were consider-ate. However, it became more and more evident that France is not in this way going to succeed in collecting the reparations, to which of course she is entitled. It appears to be a case of Germany being unwilling to pay what is claimed from her and France being unable to make her do it. However, as the month drew on it became reason-ably clear that both the French and the Germans were becoming more and more disposed to get out of an impossible and dangerous situation. It was suggested that the basic principles upon which Germany now is ready to resume reparations payment are as follows: (I) appointment of a commission to establish Germany's ability to pay and to fix limits to the reparations; (2) a series of international loans; (3) the amount to be paid cannot exceed approximately 30,000,000,000 gold marks. From Russia came numerous reports reflecting economic and political changes there. One of these told of a Cossack insurrection in the southeast of European Russia. Another reported that the expatri-ated Russians recognized the solidity of the Bolshevik government and would contest it no longer, and would reunite with other Russians if they would recognize the rights of private property and validity of former debts. This is the same position that is taken by most of the foreign governments, and especially Great Britain and the United States, with respect to recognition of the present government of Russia. Secretary Hoover announced that it is no longer necessary to give famine relief to the Russians, their present need being for credit, not food. Lenine was reported seriously ill and probably incapacitated for further activity. Administration of the government, in succession to him, by a triumvirate was suggested.

IN a previous paper1 the author discussed the problem described by the title of this paper, outlining and reviewing the Gish-Rooney method, with comparison and brief analysis of the interpretation techniques of Roman2 and Tagg.3 Some aspects of the simple type of two-layer system were reviewed from various sources.4,5,6 THE TWO-LAYER PROBLEM For the configuration shown in Fig. I, and for any electrode separation A, the apparent resistivity is a function of the relative depth [HA], the overburden resistivity pi, and a factor K defined by the equation [ ] where p2 is the resistivity of the lower bed, Thus, by the known theory of electrical images, [ ] THE MULTILAYER PROBLEM As the number of isotropic, homogeneous, horizontal layers increases, the difficulties of interpretation multiply. The theory becomes much more involved, and in view of the state of our knowledge, the general problem is virtually impossible of exact solution. However, certain types of [ ] multilayer problems can be worked out in terms of two-layer theory. Hummel,7 Pirson,8 Tagg,3 Watson,9 and others have pointed out the possibility of building up approximations of multilayer resistivity curves with suitable combinations of two-layer curves. Many three-layer curves can be constructed in this way to a good degree of accuracy, and special types of four-layer curves can be approximated. It is very likely that as the number of layers increases, the method of combination will not give good approximations except in very special cases, In the analysis of actual field data, the author has found that many obviously multilayer curves can be solved partially with a good degree of accuracy, using the theory that thin adjacent beds may be considered as one layer or zone, and applying two-layer theory to the extremities of the field curve.
