With the continued development of low-grade porphyry copper deposits by open pit mining, substantial amounts of copper-bearing strip material have been accumulated in waste dumps adjacent to the many large mines. Since the end of World War II, the production of copper from leaching these copper-bearing wastes increased from approximately 4% of the total copper production to 10% by the early 1960's. Projected increases will probably raise this figure to 20 to 30% by the early 1970's. Furthermore, a gradual recognition of the economic feasibility of leaching mined-out areas is evident and will undoubtedly contribute additional production. Waste dumps in canyons and gulches on the periphery of open pit mines, mine stopes, caved areas, and abandoned open pits often contain substantial quantities of leachable rock ranging in concentration from 0.1 to 0.4% copper. Recent developments in the leaching of copper, mainly the recognition of bacterial oxidation of sulfide minerals combined with better under- standing of the control of the salt content of the leach solutions, both by adjusting the pH and/or by hydrolysis, are resulting in a greatly expanded recovery of copper from these hitherto uneconomic mine rejects. 11.5-1. Mechanism of Leaching. Leaching processes for the extraction of metal values from mine ore or waste may be classified for convenience as either chemical leaching or bacterial leaching. Chemical leaching is considered to be the extraction of soluble salts by metathesis in acidic, basic, or neutral water solutions. The reactions involved may be evaluated by chemical thermodynamics. Bacterial leaching, although a chemical process, is dependent on biological catalysis and this is generally a much more complex process. This justifies its separate treatment in the application to leaching. Acid ferric sulfate solutions are commonly employed in the mining industry to leach valuable metals from metal sulfide ores. The leaching mechanism is a reduction-oxidation reaction in which minerals are oxidized at the expense of ferric sulfate. Such chemical leaching is profitable when

Undoubtedly other members have given their lives in the Service of the United States and the Allies during the past four years, but the following biographical notices are all that have reached us as yet. Lewis Newton Bailey Lewis Newton Bailey died of pneumonia at Camp Merritt, N. J., Apr. 30, 1918, at the age of 34 years. He was Master Engineer, Senior Grade, in the Fourth Regiment, U. S. Engineers, and although he was offered a commission as First Lieutenant shortly after enlisting, he preferred not to accept it until he had reached France. By those who knew him well, this lack of eagerness for promotion will be recognized as consistent with his whole character. Mr. Bailey was born at San Diego, Cal., May 28,1884, and graduated from the University of California, College of Mines, in 1906. He joined the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1916. During 1904 he was employed at the cyanide plant of the Buckeye mines, Forest Hills, Cal. In the autumn of 1909 he went to the Coeur d'Alene District, Idaho, and was first employed on construction work of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co'., with a short intermission at the Hercules mill, after which. he was sampler and assayer for the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co. until May, 1910, when he was obliged to return to California to attend to family interests. Returning to the Coeur d'Alene district in November, 1911, he was given charge of remodelling and operating the mill of the Coeur d'Alene Development Co., treating the output of the Ontario mine; this work he performed with credit and complete success. In December, 1914, he returned to the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co., as assistant metallurgist and mill superintendent, his work consisting mainly in the testing and improvement of concentrator practice, which he continued with great credit until August, 1915, when family considerations required that he again return to the home of his parents at San Diego. Mr. Bailey was characterized by energy, both physical and mental, by devotion to his friends, associates and employer. He was particularly successful in his relations with the men under him and, in fact, was thoroughly well likcd by everybody with whom he came in contact.

THE industrial relations between the Tennessee Copper Co. and its employees have developed a number of interesting things and have been most, profitable to the employees and to the company. It is noteworthy that considerable has been done without a formal organization of any kind built up through the efforts of the company. From time to time there have been discussions regarding the advisability of a formal organization and the decision has always been in favor of the present method. In the year 1919, the company was dealing with its employees through union committees and, after an understanding was reached, satisfactory results began to be obtained, but as time went on the committees did not function and it came to a question of how to reach the men. For the past two years, about once a month, but at no stated time, there has been a meeting with a committee of employees consisting of 40 or 50 men out of 700. This committee is secured by notify-ing the locals. In addition, the Service Department notifies a number of men not represented in the union, so as to have a large representative committee. The meetings are on company time and the men are rotated, so that in time every employee attends , at least one meeting. All department heads and a number of foremen also are present. The operating plans and policy of the company are set out at the meetings and the market outlook for products is discussed. Explana-tions are also given of anything that has come up since the last meeting which affects the employees, and an effort is made to inform them of what will probably happen in the next month or two. Once a week there is a meeting of department heads with the manager, for discussion of all operations as a whole and such depart-mental details as seem advisable. When the depression started, it was necessary to curtail operations and the reasons were carefully explained; before the men were laid off, the employees as a whole were advised of the coming layoffs through these meetings. They were also advised generally who would be retained and given an opportunity to express their agreement or their. disapproval. In fact, an effort was and is being made to keep the employees advised in advance of matters affecting them and to give them full opportunity to express themselves.

Magnetic iron ore was mined in Essex County, N. Y., during the American Revolution; Benedict Arnold is said to have mined ore near Port Henry to secure iron for chains and spikes for the Lake Champlain fleet. Details regarding the operations prior to 1804 are not easily obtained but work on a commercial scale appears to have been started about 1838. The Witherbee, Sherman & Co. was established in 1849. The property of the district is held in fee almost entirely by the mining companies. The Mineville iron-ore district, as well as the entire Adirondack region, belongs to the pre-Cambrian complex. The readily identified rocks consist of gabbro, anorthosite, syenite, and granite, and are classed as igneous, eruptive, and intrusive. In addition, there is a great variety of gneisses, rocks with a variable mineral composition but all more or less distinctly foliated. The Grenville series are the oldest rocks in the district; this series consists of graphitic white limestones, graphitic sandstones, and quartzites and gneisses with or without graphite. The orebodies occur in the gneissic rocks and are comformable to the structure of the rocks. The typical occurrence of the ore in this district is in lenticular bodies with a parallel pitch to the southwest; this structure is best exemplified in the New Bed mine. The Harmony and Old Bed orebodies are faulted by two sets of diabase dikes, one set having a southwest strike and the other set an east-west strike. The ores occurring in the acid gneissic rocks are non-titaniferous. The ores occurring in the gabbros and anorthosites are high in titanium; these deposits are irregular, have no structural relation with one another, and are unquestionably of igneous origin. The origin of the gneissic rocks and the ores therein contained is not settled; both the sedimentary theory of ore concentration and the igneous theory of magmatic segregation have been advanced. Progress in the art of amalgamation in recent years has been negligible, partly because a copper plate, though it occupies extensive floor space, requires frequent attention and invites theft, is a simple piece of apparatus that gives visible results; partly because the impression prevails that amalgamation is too primitive a process to merit consideration by an up-to-date metallurgist. Both these objections can be overruled. Plates can and will be superseded by more efficient, theft-proof amalgamating units. Improved methods of application other than by settlement or by impact, neither of which is effective for removal of fine gold, will be developed, and the process given wider opportunity. As A. F. Crosse aptly remarked, neglect to utilize amalgamation when free gold can be recovered thus is comparable to the decision of a storekeeper to deal only with credit customers. Usual practice is to follow amalgamation with cyaniding. Rarely is attention paid to the possibility of reversing the order—of extraction of the fine gold first by cyaniding; the coarse, subsequently, by amalgamation. Such a sequence avoids the alleged hazard that amalgamated gold particles may be unacted upon by cyanide, whereas cyanided gold particles are readily amalgamated. Research has indicated, however, that the mercury coating on a gold particle is easily soluble in cyanide solution, probably because such coating is a compound of gold and mercury. Comparative-test results at one plant, of cyaniding a ground concentrate before and after amalgamation, showed total extractions of about 90 and 100 per cent, respectively, indicating high solubility of the mercury-gold particle, if present, or the advantage of preliminary impoverishment before cyaniding, or both. The contention that a loss in residue from an amalgamation-cyanidation plant is occasioned by presence of amalgamated gold that escapes action by solution is not supported by adequate evidence. The function and scope of mercury as an aid to extraction of gold by cyanide is deserving of attention. It is a powerful desulfurizer. In connection with some recent professional work in the coalfields of Western Pennsylvania, with special reference to results of coking operations, I was asked to compile a statement giving the estimated cost of mining coal and manufacturing coke at two hypothetical plants of 500 ovens each, giving the relative yield of coal in coke at each plant; and, upon the average number of working days in each of the past five years, from 1899 to 1903, together with average selling price of coke at the ovens, to prepare an estimate of the relative commercial returns in each district. What seemed at first sight to be a comparatively simple proposition, involving only the ordinary elements of mining and coking costs, became complicated by the lack of standard published records of mining costs and sales, which would be applicable to the subject at issue. Upon searching through the usual channels of Government publicatious and the files of our technical societies and mining periodicals, I was surprised to note the absence of fundamental factors that would approximately meet the case in point. The very elaborate and interesting statistics annually published by the National Government' do not supply the required data for the following reasons:—1. Being reported by arbitrary districts, the average values are too general to be applied to special fields. 2. The value of coal charged to the ovens is apparently based upon the regional average value of the coal if sold in the market, and not upon the cost of production. 3. Having had for many years the management of magnetite mines, and having noted the various admixtures, such as jasper, " green rock," actinolite, etc., that occur so frequently in the deposits and make the fine ore so difficult as well as expensive to sort by hand, I studied the different ways of mechanical sorting, but found none eatisfactory—the universal objections being the expense, the small quantity that could be handled per hour, and the low grade of ore produced after all. Feeling that some means would be discovered ultimately for concentrating the small ore, I began at the Michigamme mine, at Michigamme, Lake Superior, Michigan, to separate it from the larger and richer lumps, by placing in all the shaft-houses screens of round iron bars set 1/4-inch apart, on which the skips were dumped as they were hoisted; the coarse ore going into one stock-pile or into cars, and the small ore, from 2 or 3 inches diameter down to powder, going into a special stock-pile, to be treated as soon as some proper means was found to separate the ore from the rock and ether impurities. Careful investigations showed that neither dry nor wet concentration was the right process for us; and I finally studied the magnetic process. Not knowing of any magnetic separator in this country that would handle such large pieces of ore as I wished to treat, I looked abroad and found in Sweden the Wenstrom separator. One of these machines was brought to the United States and tested in New Jersey and other places. (See the papers of Messrs. Cook and Birkinbine, Trans., xvii., 599 and 728.) This original separator, having 15-inch face of drum, I brought to the Michigamme mines, and, no one having confidence in it, placed it in operation at my own expense. Finding that in this way large ore could be treated much better by magnetic separators than by hand, and with much greater enrichment of the product, I put up a small, crude mill with several series of screens, so as to size the material and

[ ] INTRODUCTION "The Liberal Party believes that the State's mineral resources belong to the people of Queensland and therefore it is essential that the state, on their behalf, obtains maximum benefit from the development of those resources." (Liberal Party, 1980 "Mineral Resources Policy" p.2). "Unless sound policies are implemented.... increased production of minerals will benefit only the already wealthy and the lucky few... A resources tax is essential to ensure that above normal profits are shared by the whole community.... Labor policies on taxation must ensure an adequate return from mining developments to the Australian people." (Labor Party Policy Paper, May 1982 "National Issues relating to rapid expansion of mineral production during the eighties". p.1, 37, 47). Judging from these statements, key political parties in Australia believe that mining profits are lightly taxed and that shareholders get most of the benefits. THE REALITY The Government Share of Income statement in Table 1 attempts to measure the government share of the income generated by the "Big Five" Australian mining companies - Broken Hill Pty Ltd. (BHP), CRA Limited, Utah International, MIM Holdings Ltd., and Western Mining Corporation ("WMC"). These companies control over 70% of Australia's mining industry including all the most profitable mining operations. They dominate the mining and processing of iron and steel, aluminum, manganese, coal, oil and gas, copper, lead, zinc, silver, nickel, gold, ferro-alloys and salt in Australia. They are also major world exporters of most of these products. They are thus a representative sample of the profit-earning side of the Australian mining industry. In their two most recent financial years these five companies had income before tax of A$6,980 million. The Government share of this income was A$6,285 million or 90%. The total market capitalisation of the Big Five is about A$8,480 million. (December, 1982). Governments thus consumed the equivalent of 82% of their total value in just two years. This was taking place while the politicians drafted the above statements calling for an "adequate" share for the people.

Rumania produced during 1936 some 62,500,000 bbl. of oil. Of this production, 99 per cent comes from an area running east and west along the southern foothills of the Carpathian Mountains just north of Bucharest. This almost rectangular area measures 20 by 40 miles and is located in the districts of Dambovita and Prahova between the cities of Targovigte to the west and Mizil to the east. The remainder of the production is about evenly divided between the oil fields north and east of Mizil in the Buzh district and those to the north on the eastern flanks of the Carpathian Mountains in the district of Baciiu. The Transylvanian Basin to the north and west of the Carpathian Mountains has produced to date only dry gas from its numerous salt domes. Bucsani Field The Bucgani oil field produced 15,600,000 bbl., or 25 per cent of the total production of Rumania in 1936. Bucgani is a deep-seated salt dome 7 miles south of the old Moreni oil field. A slight surface doming, not dissimilar to the topography observed on some of the oil fields of the Californian basin, called attention to the area. It is the southernmost oil field and, together with the deep-seated and prolific Boldesti field, points to the great oil possibilities of the deep-seated domes along the northern edge of the Rumanian plains south of the Carpathian foothills. The Government is the principal owner of the oil and gas subsurface rights in the areas south of the foothills. The acquisition of leases by the operating oil companies may be made either by application for an exploration permit, the company being assigned part of the acreage in case of successful wildcatting, or, if the area has already been declared as proven territory, through competitive bidding. A block of 164 acres was auctioned recently for $200,000, or $1200 per acre. The largest producer in the Bucgani oil field is the Steaua Romana, which produced 39.5 per cent of the total for the field. The Steaua Romana is a post-war company and 50 per cent of its shares are owned by the British Steaua and the Steaua Franpaise and the other 50 per cent by a group of Rumanian banks and by the Government. The study of anisotropy in metals has been greatly stimulated in recent years by the rapid development of X-ray methods for determining the crystallographic relationships of wrought and annealed materials. Prior to this time the knowledge regarding the directional properties of commercial alloys consisted almost exclusively of observations of a practical nature made during the fabrication of metal objects, supplemented by a limited number of mechanical tests on specimens cut at various angles to the direction of working. Such observations clearly indicate that the common methods of cold-working metals cause both a crystallographic and a mechanical fibering varying in character and degree according to the nature and extent of the deforming process. Even after annealing, following certain not too well known combinations of reductions and anneals, a preferred orientation may exist,, thereby constituting a residual fiber effect sufficiently pronounced to manifest directional properties. With the application of the X-ray the experimental horizon was extended chiefly because the study of anisotropic metals promised to offer direct and quantitative evidence regarding the involved mechanism of fragmentation and plastic flow. As a natural consequence the intensive studies in this direction have yielded a vast accumulation of data of ultimate potential value. Unfortunately, however, as is commonly the case in entering a virgin field of experimentation, many of the data cannot be molded into complete and coherent form because of the many unrelated conditions of the experimental projects. Again, the results of the study of single crystals have been rather naturally but at times indiscriminately applied to poly crystalline metals. Furthermore, sweeping statements have been made regarding the behavior during working and annealing of metals and alloys, entirely on the basis of similarity in lattice arrangement. There is abundant reason for believing that relatively small concentration variables, differences in magnitude and distribution of applied stresses, and the character of associated annealing treatments may in some cases greatly influence the mechanics of flow

Economics has been defined as the useful application of wealth or material resources. The search of alchemists in the Middle Ages for s formula by which base metals might be transmuted into gold was no more intensive than has been the search by all branches of the oil industry for methods whereby the rnatcrial resources of West Texas in the nature of sulfur-bearing oil might be usefully applied. The purpose of this paper is to present in brief space developments that are conceded to possess economic significance. History The first discovery of oil in commercial quantities in the Permian Basin of West Texas was the Westbrook field in Mitchell County in 1920. Three years later the discovery well in the Big Lake field was cornpleted as a small pumper (70 bbl.) at a depth of 3028 ft. In 1925, discovery of the Powell or World pool in Crockett County stimulated activities in the Permian Basin, further establishing the importance of the Permian limestones as sources of production. The years 1925 and 1926 were marked by a period of extensive leasing and drilling activities. At the close of 1926 more than 7,000,000 acres had been leased and discovery wells completed in the Hurdle, Hendricksand Yates fields, definitely establishing the importance of the Permian Basin as a source of production from free-flowing wells. Review of Fields The producing fields in the Permian Basin are grouped on three distinct lines of folding. These may be separately identified as the Big Lake-Powell fold; the Yates, Hurdle, and Church-McElroy area and the Winkler County development. Production is derived from a porous limestone stratigraphically uniform, encountered at depths varying from 900 to 3100 ft. The Elk City mining district of Idaho occupies a position near the geographical center of Idaho county, a region of moderate elevation in the western foot-hills of the Bitter Root mountains. The district comprises an area of approximately 350 Sq. miles, bounded on the west by the Newsome district and on the south by the Dixie and Oro Grande districts. There are no mining districts to the north or east. Elk City, the principal town and the seat of the mining office for the district, is situated in a hydrographical basin surrounded by low hills. The elevation is 4,200 ft. above sea-level. Through this basin flow Elk Creek, Red river, and American river, which unite west of town to form the south fork of the Clearwater. The one township is set out from the Bitter Root Forest Reserve. Though a railroad starting from the Stites terminus of the Clearwater Short Line of the Northern Pacific railroad has been under consideration for some years, the camp is yet without railroad facilities. The projected road would follow the south fork of the Clearwater on easy grades, but would be very expensive to build and maintain. While such a road would greatly benefit those who are now operating in the camp, and in a sligh degree stimulate interest in its possibilities, there is hardly business enough to warrant its construction. At present all supplies and equipment are hauled in by wagon from Stites, a distance of 58 miles, over a wagon road constructed by the State in 1904, following in the main the old Nez Perce trail. While this is not a bad road, it is not all that might be desired. Starting at Stites at an elevation of 1,327 feet above sea-level, the road runs through low hills to Clearwater, a distance of 10 miles. In the next 16 miles the climb is steady until the Mountain House is reached, which is near the summit of Mount Pisgah. This is the highest point passed on the road, having an elevation of 6,500 ft. The Cripple Creek district is in Teller County, Colo., about 18 miles in an air line west of Colorado Springs and at an elevation of 10,000 It. A line drawn through Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak will, if continued, about pass through the district. The character of the country generally is rolling, with few trees and little snow fall. The annual precipitation is about 20 in. All the water used by the mines is supplied by the Altman Water Co., which pumps from the west slope of Pikes Peak. Gold was discovered in 1891, since which time the district has produced $411,000,000. The peak of production was reached in 1900 and amounted to $25,000,000. At present the production amounts to about $400,000 per month. Geology In general, the geology of the district is simple; ash veins and dikes traverse a volcanic plug of breccia. The ore occurs as enriched spots along these dikes and veins. The dikes represent the most recent extrusions and consist of basalt and phonolite. (For a complete geological description reference is made to Professional Paper 54, 1906, of the U. S. Geological Survey.) The ore consists of small parallel seams of high grade. In only a few cases is the gold disseminated through the rock; much of the gold in the broken ore is found in the fines. The wall rock is hard blocky granite or breccia. About 25 per cent. of the rock mined is shipped as ore to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs. The height of an ore deposit is usually several times its length. Few flat oreshoots have been found. The veins are all steep and have a dip of 70 to 80°. Development The claims are all 300 by 1500 ft. and are held by location or patent. All mining is done through shafts, one of which has reached a depth of 2600 ft. The main working shafts are 41/29 by 1335 It. and are made up of three compartments, each 4 by 41/2 ft. in the clear. That the quiescence of a liquid while it is solidifying should favor the formation of columnar crystals, normal of the cooling surface, is seen readily on considering the mechanism of solidification. First, each particle of any composite liquid, whether it be an aqueous solution or a molten metal, in solidifying splits up into two parts, different in composition and hence in fusibility. One part is infusible at the existing temperature, and hence solidifies, and in general attaches itself to the inclosing walls of metal which have already solidified; A, Fig. 1. The other part is fusible at the existing temperature and hence remains molten. In the case of carbon steel, the part of each drop which actually solidifies is poorer in carbon than the drop itself was before it began to solidify, and this impoverishment of the solidifying half-drop enriches the other half-drop in carbon, and thus makes it unfreezable at the existing tern- By this mechanism there arises during solidification a "littoral" or shore layer of liquid B, Fig. 1, bathing the already solidified walls, and more fusible than either those walls or the great remaining central mass of liquid or " deep sea " C, from which it separates them. It is essential that we grasp clearly this conception of a fusible littoral molten layer coating the already solidified walls and separating them from the deep sea. Meanwhile heat is flowing rapidly outward through these walls, its escape cooling them, so that if any given particle of the deep sea metal could get past this littoral layer and come into contact with the solid walls, it would in turn solidify, and like its predecessors would split up in solidifying into a less fusible half-drop which would attach itself to those . walls and a more fusible one which would remain molten. WHEN a mine is changed from hand, to me-chanical loading, the character of the coal dumped at the tipple is changed in many ways. Selective mining is not so easy with mechanical load-ers, and where much picking is done at the face it is apt to be wasteful anyway. Much recoverable coal is apt to be lost by too free gobbing and, in my opinion, picking at the face should be confined to removal of heavy rock, such as pieces of roof or bottom or sulfur balls. and to such clearly defined and persistent bands as can be readily recognized and segregated. With mechanical loaders of the shovel type, even this amount of gobbing is almost impossible. When coal is shoveled into a conveyor there should be no difficulty in doing as much picking as now by hand loading. The size of lumps may be greatly increased, on ac-count of the ease of handling them with a shovel, as the miners will not break them up in order to lift them into cars. Fines may be increased. This is, of course, not universally true, yet it is my opinion that a shovel breaks the coal more, as a rule, than hand loading. This might not be true with all types of shovels and is cer-tainly not true with a conveyor, either with or without the "duck-bill." The average car load will be greatly reduced in fields such as Illinois and Indiana, in which it is the practice to build up the coal above the sides. Where "level full" regulations prevail there should be no material change. When the coal comes to the tipple these differences usually result in the discovery, that many changes are necessary in the preparation plant. The increase in the percentage of fine sizes will probably not bother the screen, but may overload the conveying apparatus. The larger size lump may clog the chute, but as a rule the efficiency of the sizing screens is not greatly affected. In one completely mechanized mine the proportions of 6-in. lump and 2-in. screenings, when loading by hand, were 16.9 and 51.3 per cent respectively. When loading mechanically, these proportions changed to 15 per cent lump and 53.5 per cent screenings. The picking force on the tipple has been increased from 14 on hand loading to 33 men on mechanically-loaded coal. This is for an output of about 5000 tons.

IT IS increasingly evident that the excellence of blast-furnace operation to a great extent depends upon the preparation of the products fed into the furnace. The preparation of these products is carried on largely in the roasting and sintering departments. Prior to the building of flotation plants in Utah and other western states for the treatment of lead-zinc ores, the gravity concentrates received at the Midvale smelter amounted to about 4000 tons per month, containing 24 per cent. lead and 10 or 11 per cent. zinc. This product was about 20 mesh-that is, 45 per cent. of it would be plus 20 mesh and the balance minus 20 mesh. About 1000 tons of pyrite per month, containing 5 per cent. lead and 10 per cent. zinc, was also received. These products were sent to the multiple-hearth roasters for calcining, after which they were sent to the Dwight-Lloyd machines for sintering with other ores. The sintering charge passed over the machines but once. The first flotation products received consisted of a wet, sticky, muddy mass, containing a large amount of moisture, up to 19 or 20 per cent., and it was almost impossible to feed .them with any degree of regularity, if at all, through our standard feeders; but the amount of flotation product received during the first year or so was relatively small and it virtually lost its identity by being mixed with a large amount of jig and table concentrates. As the quantity of flotation products increased, more efficient filtering was accomplished and the moisture greatly reduced. FLOTATION PRODUCTS RECEIVED At the present time the Midvale plant receives about 4300 tons per month of flotation product running 60 per cent. lead and 4.5 per cent. zinc, 85 per cent. of which is minus 200 mesh and contains about 8 per cent. moisture; and 4000 tons per month of pyrite of similar fineness, running about 2 per cent. lead and 3.5 per cent. zinc, containing about 10 per cent. moisture. The lower moisture greatly reduces the difficulties of handling, making it possible to run a 100 per cent. flotation feed on a multiple-hearth furnace without serious mechanical troubles. NAME AND OBJECT. SEC. 1. This Institute is incorporated under the Membership Corporation Law of the State of New York ; its corporate name is AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING ENGINEERS; and its objects are such as are stated in its Certificate of Incorporation. ARTICLE II. MEMBERS. SEC. 1. The membership of the Institute shall comprise four classes, namely (1) Members ; (2) Honorary Members , (3) Associates , and (4) Honorary Associates Only Members and Associates residing within the United States of America, Republic of Mexico and Dominion of Canada shall be entitled to vote at the meetings of the Institute. SEC. 2 All Members, Honorary Members, Associates and Honorary Associates of the American Institute of Mining Engineers as the same existed on the day of the incorporation of this Institute, are Members, Honorary Members, Associates and Honorary Associates, respectively, of this Corporation SEC. 3. The following classes of persons shall be eligible for membership in the Institute, namely, as Members and Honorary Members, all professional mining engineers, geologists, metallurgists or chemists, and all persons practically engaged in mining, metallurgy or metallurgical engineering ; as Associates and Honorary Associates, all persons desirous of being connected with the Institute who, in the opinion of the Council, are suitable. SEC 4. Every candidate for election as a Member or Associate of the Institute must be proposed for election by at least three Members or Associates; must be approved by the Committee on Membership, as prescribed in the By-Laws ; and .must be elected by the Council. Not less than three-fourths of the votes cast shall be necessary to an election Every person so elected shall become a Member or Associate, as the case may be, upon payment of his first dues as herein-after prescribed Each candidate for Honorary Member or Honorary Associate, must be recommended by at least ten Members or Associates ; must be approved by the Council ; and must be elected by ballot at a meeting of the Board of Directors by the unanimous vote of all the Directors present ; provided, however, that the number of Honorary Members and Honorary Associates shall not at any time exceed twenty SEC. 5. THE term "bleaching clay" or "bleaching earth," as used in the oil industries, refers to clays that in their natural state, or after chemical or physical activation, have the capacity for adsorbing coloring matter from oil. There are three common types of bleaching clays: fuller's earth, activated clays, and activated bauxite. Fuller's earth, or naturally active clay, is prepared from bentonites that possess natural activity. It is not activated commercially; in fact, earths of this type ordinarily do not respond satisfactorily to acid activation. Fuller's earth is prepared in pulverized as well as granular form for use in the contacting and percolation processes, respectively. Acid-activated clays also are of bentonitic origin. The basic raw clay, however, is of a type that has a very low natural activity but is highly activable by treatment with mineral acid. Commercial acid-activated clays generally possess several times the decolorizing power (bleaching efficiency) of the best quality of fuller's earth. The former are prepared commercially only in the pulverized grade because of the difficulties in obtaining a satisfactory granular product, and hence are used only in the contact process. Activated bauxite is made by heat-treating bauxite ore, which in its natural state has very little natural activity. The commercial product is prepared in granular form for use in the percolation process on petroleum oils. For the most part, bleaching clay is used commercially in the decolorization of animal, vegetable and petroleum oils, fats and waxes. It is applied in two ways: (1) by the percolation method and (2) by the contacting method. Percolation refers to the passage of oil through a bed of granular clay whereas contacting refers to direct agitation of oil and pulverized clay followed by removal of the clay from the oil by filtration.
