Recent discovery at Mount Isa of copper mineralization in commercial amount at a depth of 1000 ft., coinciding with downward termination of ore at about the same depth within the larger silver-lead-zinc lenses that have been the standby of Mount Isa's production to date, has been cited as an example in support of mineral zoning. A previous paper by the author and Graham Hall1 furnished a detailed description of the geology of the ore at Mount Isa as exposed up to that time, but necessarily dealt mainly with the silver-lead-zinc mineralization. Most of the geologic facts that constitute the first half of the present paper were set forth in the previous one in much greater detail, with full supporting evidence for the facts cited. The large amount of underground development (approximately 20 miles) and the extensive exploration carried out by diamond drilling (100,000 ft.) at Mount Isa, added to extensive microscope work conducted over a period of years, both by the company's staff and by others, had made possible the calculation within fairly close limits of mineralogical composition of the principal mineralized block of ground down to 1000-ft. depth, and had established closely the mineral succession, with reasons for deposition of the various minerals in the patterns now occupied by them. The geologic facts as outlined in the previous paper remain as stated; but because substantial development within the new copper ore body and further exploratory diamond drilling within the new silver-lead-zinc area (Racecourse) have taken place since that paper was written, statements and figures relating to those two areas in the present paper supersede those furnished in the previous one. The recent work likewise has established more clearly the paragenetic relationship between the chalco-pyrite and galena. Evidence confirming the relationship is furnished in the present paper. An approximate theoretical model is proposed to quantitatively predict freezing ranges Tf and hydrostatic tensions P developed within solidifying binary alloys, allowing for a certain amount of diffusion of solute in the solid during solidification. The maxima in ATf and AP as functions of composition are shorn to occur at smaller solute concentrations than would be expected from the equilibrium diagram, and are found to correspond closely to experimentally observed maxima in microporosity. THE freezing range of simple binary alloys appears to have been little studied, except for certain indirect observations on the defects, particularly microporosity and hot tearing, arising in long freezing range materials. Two theories relating to the freezing range of alloys and its effect upon porosity are reasonably well established, and appear to have been held in isolation from each other: a) From purely equilibrium considerations early researchers expected that an increase in solute content of an alloy should increase the freezing range (defined here as the equilibrium freezing range ?Tf = Tl-Ts where TL and Ts are the liquidus and solidus temperatures, respectively) and thereby increase the width of the pasty zone for a given set of conditions. This in turn should increase the difficulty of feeding the residual liquid through the dendrite mesh to compensate for the contraction on solidification, and consequently tend to increase the observed amount of porosity. From qualitative observations on steels Czikel1 reports an increase in porosity with increasing carbon content up to 0.46 pct C. More careful measurements by Whittenberger and Rhines2 on fourteen different alloy systems showed an approximately linear relation between ?Tf and pct porosity (although unfortunately the precise experimental data is not given). b) Conversely however, other authors3"5 propose that porosity is reduced by the presence of increased amounts of eutectic present at the final solidification temperature. Lees7 and Bochvar6 claim that the hot tearing of alloys is similarly reduced. Scheuer8 has put forward a theory to explain this effect, Fig. 1. The argument is basically that solidification progresses on a plane front through a relatively open dendrite network and is thus (the argument is not developed more explicitly) easier to feed. Japanese wartime economy demanded domestic cobalt production. This paper describes a process operated for two years at the Besshi mine and smelter on extremely low grade (0.1 pct Co) pyrite concentrates obtained from copper ore. 'The steps in the process were roasting, leaching, precipitation, reduction fusion to crude cobalt, and finally refining by electrolysis to 99+ pct. COBALT ore deposits in Japan are all small and of poor grade. In the past, a small amount of cobalt has been produced from the best portions of a few of these deposits, and very little production is expected in the future. In addition to these lean cobalt ores, cobalt is present in the cupriferous pyrite which is fairly abundant although of low grade, as is shown in Table I. Considerable cobalt is expected from these deposits because of their extent. Cobalt cannot be exclusively recovered economically from ore of this type; however, if means could be devised to recover it as a byproduct of copper production, a fairly large production at reasonable cost could be expected from Japanese sources. It was along this line that the research work was done. Selection of Suitable Process The process for extracting cobalt differs from ore to ore according to their composition. The difficulty in cobalt metallurgy arises from the fact that chemically cobalt resembles many such common metals as Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Zn, associated with it in the ores. In the present case the most serious difficulties were: 1—Extremely low grade ore, 0.1 pct Co. 2—The large proportion of iron accompanying cobalt and its close similarity in chemical behavior. 3—The fairly large proportion of zinc and manganese and their chemical similarity to cobalt. The recovery of cobalt oxide as a byproduct of the hydrometallurgy of copper had been attempted in Japan but was stopped after a short period because it proved uneconomical. The literature disclosed no method for the recovery of cobalt from cobaltiferous copper pyrite and it was therefore necessary to devise a new process. The following basic principles were considered in selecting the process: 1—A major alteration in copper production methods should not be necessary. 2—The first step should be the extraction of cobalt leaving the large quantity of iron unaffected. For this purpose wet metallurgy would be preferred.

High strength, high-conductivity copper-base alloys have found considerable use in the resistance welding and electrical industry in the form of castings, forgings, or wrought products. There are a number of parts utilized by these industries which would lend themselves to manufacture by powder metallurgical methods provided the required physical and electrical properties are obtainable with such methods. The present paper describes the results of a study of certain copper-base powder metallurgical products susceptible to precipitation hardening. Copper Powders The general types of commercially available copper powders are flake, spherical and electrolytic. Micrographs of these three types are shown in Figs. I, 2 and 3. The difference in particle shape is pronounced and obvious. The type of powder used is determined, or at least indicated, by the final properties desired in the finished article. The type of powder employed during the present investigation was electrolytic powder shown in Fig. 3, and was chosen because of its particular adaptability to the work described in this Paper. The screen and chemical analyses of this powder are shown in Table I. In the preparation of compacts of high electrical conductivity, the purity of the copper powder is of importance in addition to other factors, such as density and the state of internal stresses. These variables were studied briefly by pressing a number of compacts to various pressed densities, sintering them for one hour in hydrogen at 975OC and repressing. The size of the finished compacts was 1/4, by % by 8 in. The time interval from the application to the termination of pressure was approximately 20 sec. Some of the compacts were annealed before testing. The results are listed in Figs. 4 to 8, inclusive. In Fig. 4 the curves of pressed density vs. compacting pressure, and sintered density versus compacting pressure show the typical direct relationship of pressure and density. Compacting pressures exceeding about 30 tons per sq. in. result fiequently in expansion during sintering for the type of powder used. Fig. 5 indicates that variations in the initial pressed density within the range of about 5 to 6 grams per c, c., affect only slightly the pressure required to obtain a

In a paper on the manufacture of artificial fuel, read at the Philadelphia meeting of February, 1878, I enumerated the difficulties which I had to overcome before succeeding in the mixing of coal-dust and clay, the compressing of the same mixture, and the water-proofing of the lumps. The drying of the lumps, after leaving the press, was the remaining difficulty, and it mas expected that a plan devised by Dr. Charles N. Cresson, of Philadelphia, would enable us to dry the fuel as rapidly as it was moulded, and that a continuous production could in that way be obtained. The company was reorganized. The works were purchased by the new company at an assignee's sale, and the oven was modified, according to Dr. Cresson's plan. Anticipating a possible failure, I had prepared a plan by which I expected to be able to demonstrate that anthracite coal dust nixed with pitch, could be manufactured with our present machinery slightly modified ; so that after all, if we were compelled to give up the attempt to make fuel for domestic use, there was a possibility of succeeding in the manufacture of a good steam-fuel. The plan suggested by Dr. Cresson for drying the pressed lumps of coal-dust cemented with clay, did not work as well as we expected. It enabled us to dry more fuel than we did before, but it could not be made to dry more than one half of the lumps produced by the press. The plan mas abandoned, and I was authorized to experiment with coal-dust and coal-tar pitch. The cement which is used in Europe to conglomerate coal-dust is usually dry pitch, which is prepared by separating from the tar, at a temperature of 572' Fahrenheit, the volatile matters which it contains. Some manufacturers, however, employ crude tar, others, a rich tar, which has been cleared of 25 per cent. of its volatile substances, by heating it to 392' Fahrenheit. But with common tar very weak fuels are obtained, which do riot burn well, and give out a strong smell and a great deal of smoke ; it is also necessary to subject them to a baking process, in order to solidify them, and to eliminate the more volatile of the materials contained. This operation of course requires a special plant, the cost of which increases sensibly the price of manufacture, without counting the products

THE axial orientations of columnar crystals in unidirectionally solidified ingots of zone-refined zinc and tin have been examined using the techniques recently described by us.' Both metals had an initial purity of 99.999+ pct before zone refining and satisfied all qualitative guides for very high purity after zone refining. Fig. 1 presents the orientations of the columnar crystals for tin and zinc, respectively. For tin, there is a preference for grains growing in the [I101 direction, i.e., the dendrite direction.' For zinc, a weak preference for the [0001] direction is seen (a random population in the unit triangle would give equal density on either side of the 60-deg circle centered on [0001]).' There was no apparent evidence for dendritic growth in either metal. These results, and those previously reported,' confirm the recent investigation by Hellawell and Herbert of casting textures observed for zone-refined lead, zinc, and tin.4 The preferred casting orientations for these metals in both the impure and zone-refined states are given in Table I. In the experiments on zone-refined lead,' it was shown that two separate textures existed: a preferred (111) nucleation texture existed at the chill surface and a preferred (111) texture developed during solidification. Either effect is sufficient to produce the result recorded in Table I. Similarly the results recorded for tin and zinc may be attributable to either a preferred nucleation or a preferred growth phenomenon and additional experiments are required to separate these two possible explanations. Hellawell and Herbert' attribute their results to a preferred growth process and account for it on the basis of a "layer-growth" model proposed much earlier by one of the present authors.5 An equally satisfactory growth model would be that based upon anisotropic surface energies. However, both of these growth models would indicate that the preferred growth direction for very pure metals should be normal to the plane of closest packing in the metal. This is consistent for zinc but, contrary to the conclusion of Hellawell and Herbert, it is not consistent for tin since here the (100) is expected to exhibit a greater density of packing than the (110). Although tin is expected to exhibit an anisotropy of thermal conductivity, we would expect the thermal conductivity to be the same in the [1101 as the [l00]

PRIOR to Sept. 1, 1928, there had never been constructed what might be termed a long pipe line with electric-welded field joints. Nevertheless, by Sept. 1, 1929, within the period of a year, more than 2500 miles of electric-welded lines have been completed. These lines vary in diameter from 6 to 20 in., and in length from 50 to 700 miles. Before Sept. 1, 1928, no such line had been constructed .longer than 50 miles, and only one of nearly that length, a 40-mile 7-in. gas line in Louisiana. This was in reality the first pipe line to use electric-welded field joints. During the past year the following lines have been electric-welded by the Welding Engineering Co. alone: Texas Pipe Line Co.-157 miles of 8-in. line from Corsicana, Texas, to San Augustine, Texas. (This was the first electric-welded oil line.) Texas Pipe Line Co.-80 miles of 8-in. from Lafors, Texas, to Childress, Texas. Texas Pipe Line Co.-39 miles of 10-in. from Monahans, Texas, to Jal, New Mexico. Texas Pipe Line Co.-50 miles of 6-in, from San Antonio, Texas, to San Marcus, Texas. Texas-Empire Pipe Line Co.-424 miles of 12-in. from Cushing, Okla. to Chicago, Illinois. In addition to the field welding mentioned above,1 250 miles of 12-in. line was electric-welded into double joints at the pipe mill at Indiana Harbor, Ind.

At this time it is expected that lists of symbols in general use throughout the country will be presented and the symbols most generally used will be recommended for adoption.

Unitization—in some form from simple agreements among operators to complete consolidation of ownerships—is a means of obviating the wastes of unrestrained competition among owners in extracting oil and gas from a common reservoir, as well as of adjusting its output to the current needs of its owners. It offers opportunity for application of improved production methods which are expected to increase recovery, decrease developing and operating costs, and assist in stabilizing output.

Reserves of perlite rock in the western section of the United States are immense. A geological report prepared for the Union Pacific RR showed proved tonnage of over 400 million tons in southern Nevada alone. Yet the perlite industry is not large, and most of the mines are relatively small. There are indications that perlite processing, thus far largely in the hands of relatively small com¬panies, is becoming concentrated in a few large companies. For economic reasons the bulk of perlite sold in crude form has come from three or four pro¬ducers, although many individual operators have sold small quantities to limited lists of purchasers. Perlite is one of ultra-lightweight aggregates. Owing to its outstanding qualities as an aggregate, variety of uses, and ultimate economy of use, it has enjoyed considerable popularity in this country in recent years. Marked foreign interest also has been evinced in this material.

Coal has been fighting a rear-guard action since the last World War. The battle against competitive fuels has been largely guerilla warfare with more sniping within the ranks than of organized opposition. Oil and natural gas are the fuels that over these twenty odd years have driven coal backward and out of many profitable markets. Now, somewhat timidly, the coal industry is trying a new weapon; namely, Research, or let us more properly say, Organized Research. Engineers have been designing this weapon for many years, supported by those interested in coal, including some coal producers. A part of this pioneer work has been Fundamental Research, the Ph.D. kind that is over the heads of most of us. Another part has been aimed at immediate objectives and realizable profits, the practical, man-in-the-street sort. That is Industrial Research. Enough has been accomplished to make a fair exhibit, but whether this new weapon will have sufficient fire power to rout the opposition, whether the industry will really go into production and use it, the next few years will tell. Need foR Coal Research To utter "Research" is to use the modern magic word; to conjure up the miraculous—rubber from weeds; radar; magnesium from sea water; yes, even gasoline from coal. Research is a very general term. It means something different to every man. What is the coal industry seeking with its research; or what should it seek? And, specifically, how is it going about the job; and is it taking the best way? There are many who say that Coal has been asleep at the switch, while Oil and Gas have been taking the energy business. In an organized way this is true. Large-scale, privatelyfinanced research is just started in the Pennsylvania anthracite industry, and it is still a dream for bituminous coal. What has been done so far collectively is purely defensive; as, for instance, to improve mechanical devices for burning coal so as to be able to recover markets for house-heating fuel long since abandoned to oil and gas. To appreciate just how seriously bituminous coal has slipped back in the national economy in the past 2 5 years, one has only to recall that, in the last war the Navy required for its operations all the high-grade, low-volatile coal that could be produced, and that anthracite was withdrawn from the middle and northwest markets to keep the eastern seaboard warm. All coal was "rationed" by zones, if not to individuals. Now the Navy, the Armed forces and the Merchant Marine are propelled by oil and gasoline. Gasoline and heating oil are rationed to individuals. Production of all coal in this country in 1918 reached the historic figure of 678,200,-000 tons, and in 1943, after 25 years, it is expected to reach a special wartime total of 660,000,000 tons. Meanwhile, production of crude oil this year may exceed 1 ,500,000,000 bbl., and like that of natural gas, reach four times the amount produced in 1918.

Need foR Coal Research To utter "Research" is to use the modern magic word; to conjure up the miraculous—rubber from weeds; radar; magnesium from sea water; yes, even gasoline from coal. Research is a very general term. It means something different to every man. What is the coal industry seeking with its research; or what should it seek? And, specifically, how is it going about the job; and is it taking the best way? There are many who say that Coal has been asleep at the switch, while Oil and Gas have been taking the energy business. In an organized way this is true. Large-scale, privatelyfinanced research is just started in the Pennsylvania anthracite industry, and it is still a dream for bituminous coal. What has been done so far collectively is purely defensive; as, for instance, to improve mechanical devices for burning coal so as to be able to recover markets for house-heating fuel long since abandoned to oil and gas. To appreciate just how seriously bituminous coal has slipped back in the national economy in the past 2 5 years, one has only to recall that, in the last war the Navy required for its operations all the high-grade, low-volatile coal that could be produced, and that anthracite was withdrawn from the middle and northwest markets to keep the eastern seaboard warm. All coal was "rationed" by zones, if not to individuals. Now the Navy, the Armed forces and the Merchant Marine are propelled by oil and gasoline. Gasoline and heating oil are rationed to individuals. Production of all coal in this country in 1918 reached the historic figure of 678,200,-000 tons, and in 1943, after 25 years, it is expected to reach a special wartime total of 660,000,000 tons. Meanwhile, production of crude oil this year may exceed 1 ,500,000,000 bbl., and like that of natural gas, reach four times the amount produced in 1918.

It has been demonstrated that for fine grinding operations, the energy input (E) and the product size modulus (k) are related by an equation of the form E = Ak1-n (1) where "A " and "n" are constants.(1) Also, it was suggested that "A" is determined by the comminuting device and that "n" depends primarily on the rock. It was the purpose of this investigation to study these constants by determining the form of an energy-size reduction relationship over an extreme range of energy inputs, and at the same time, to evaluate the minimum particle size produced during grinding. The comminution system consisted of a stainless steel laboratory ball mill in which quartz was ground at 60% solids for times ranging from 1 minute to 700 hours. The mill which measured 10" diameter by 12" long was loaded with about 60 pounds of balls ranging in diameter from 3/8" to 1-1/8" and was driven at 55 r.p.m. Quartz was selected for the tests because it is a brittle material for which size distribution data were expected to show a constant distribution coefficient regardless of product size.(1) This permitted specification of product size by a size modulus alone. The quantities measured were the time of grind (measure of energy input) and the specific surfaces of the products. Since no accurate method is available yet for determining particle size directly in the very fine size ranges specific surface data were used for this purpose. The relationship between these two quantities may be expressed as where Cis a constant which includes a shape factor, p is the specific gravity of the solid,_S is the specific surface and D is an equivalent particle diameter. For a material in which the distribution coefficient does not change with size the term (l/S) may be substituted for k in equation L if the proportionality constant "A" is changed correspondingly. This substitution was made in this work but in addition, screen analyses were made on several products to verify the equivalence of the two methods of size specification. EXPERIMENTAL DETAIL QUARTZ Quartz from two sources was tested. One series of tests was made on a clear, high purity crystalline quartz from Brazil and Arkansas, and another series was run on massive quartz fromNewHampshire. Grinding charges of the high purity material consisted of 2000 gram samples of -3-8 mesh particles, while the charges of the New Hampshire quartz were 500 gram samples of a -35+48 mesh screen fraction. The difference in the sizes of these two series of charges was not significant in view of the extreme size reduction accomplished, and the New Hampshire samples were smaller to permit ginding to finer sizes in shorter times than required for 2000 gram lots. SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS Separate charges were ground for all tests in which the grinding times were less than one hour and for all tests on New Hampshire quartz since these products were difficult to sample accurately without affecting the entire charge. Dithiophosphates are reaction products of phosphorous pentasulfide with various organic compounds such as phenols, alcohols, mercaptans, dioalcohols, amines, and nitrides. The products with alcohols are commercially known as "aerofloats" and these are investigated in this presentation. It appears that the formation of insoluble metal dithio phosphates is responsible for their collecting properties with minerals." In this aspect they are very similar to xanthates.3 The solubility of metal dithiophosphates depends on the number of carbon atoms in the organic chain of the corresponding alcohol. An empirical mathematical model is presented here. It allows one to predict the number of carbon atoms necessary to ensure that a certain metal dithiophosphate will form at a selected pH value of the water solution. The Nature of Dithiophosphates Dithiophosphoric acid is the product of the reaction of phosphorus pentasulfide with an alcohol, as shown in the following equation: [P2S3 + 4 ROH - 2 (RO)2 PS2H + H2S (1)] where R stands for a hydrocarbon chain. The acid so produced can be neutralized by a base to produce the corresponding salt as shown in the following: [(RO), PS2H + NH- (RO)2 PS, NH,. (2)] In this aspect dithiophosphates are similar to xanthates, the only difference being the substitution of the tetravalent carbon atom in the xanthate polar group by a pentavalent phosphorus atom in the dithiophosphate group. This difference implies at least two characteristics: (1) that there are two hydrocarbon chains associated with the polar group so that an increase in the number of carbons of the single chain is expected to have a pronounced effect on the flotation properties, and (2) that the bond between the sulfur and the central atom is stronger than in the xanthate group. This probably leads to a decrease in both the polarizability of the electronic cloud of the sulfur and the interaction with cations.3 However, what is lost in the dithiophosphates by having a weak polar group can be gained by an increase in the number of carbons as will be seen later. Taking into account the size of the atoms involved in a dithiophosphate molecule, as listed in Table 1, It is possible to draw an approximate diagram of its structure as shown in [Fig. 1]. It is assumed here that the length of the single hydrocarbon chain is equal to that of the corresponding alcohol. Preparation and Purification Acid dithiophosphates can be prepared, as previously mentioned, in accordance with Eq. 1. The rate of this reaction is too slow at room temperature and can be improved by increasing the temperature to about 60° or 80°C7 or by evacuating the system. In our investigation evacuation was performed by a water aspiration pump. The dithiophosphoric acid so produced is liquid and dissolves in the alcohol. At the end of the reaction the product is filtered from the remaining P2S3; and dissolved in petroleum ether. By blowing anhydrous ammonia gas into the ether phase the ammonium salt forms as a white precipitate and can be sepa-
