THE coal classification session* on Monday morning, Feb. 17, was opened by a paper by M. R. Campbell, entitled "Natural Groups of Coal and Allied Fuels," in which he pointed out, by means of graphical presentation of selected proximate analyses of coal, that coals can be classified on the basis of their moisture content. He proposes four groups of coal, brown coal, hydrobituminous, bituminous, and anthracite, each subdivided into two or three sub-groups. In a written discussion of this G. H. Cady, of the Illinois Geological Survey, showed that there is, in general, a progressive decrease in the moisture of Illinois coals from north to south, and that it would be very difficult to draw any arbitrary line dividing the coals of the State into two groups on the basis of moisture content.

Clays consist predominantly of hydrated silicates of alumina. The formula is frequently assumed to be A1203 . 2Si02 . 2H20,'and certain of I. North Carolina. Low plasticity. 11. However, they always contain water of chemical constitution, as shown by Table 1.

THE Mining Methods sessions, one of which was run jointly with the Industrial Minerals Division, were fortunate in having a number of exceptionally fine papers. At the Tuesday session R. P. Smith presented the results of six years' experience with prepaid medical care for the employees of the Hollinger mine. It was felt that this paper was a real contribution to the cross field of mining-medicine, and the presentation was exceptionally well done. Olof V. Lindqvist acquainted us with the consider- able progress made in blast-hole diamond drilling in recent times, especially in Canada. The opening of a mine is always a matter of considerable interest and the description of the procedure and problems encountered in opening the Mather mine of Cleveland Cliffs Iron was presented by L. C. Moore.

At the Atlanta Meeting in October, 1895, a short paper was presented by Mr. R. W. Leonard on the " Assay of Auriferous Ores and Gravels by Amalgamation and the Blow-pipe" (Trans., xxv., 645), embodying the results of some very conclusive tests as to the value of the process. His arguments regarding the desirability of the process appear to be indisputable, but the practicability of the field-outfit used by him is open to question. The Province of Ontario, in which Kingston is situated, is still largely unexplored; and at the Kingstoil School of Mining we give much attention to the instruction of prospectors and the testing of ores. MEDELLIN, the famous old capital of the Province of Antioquia in Colombia, is in the heart of the Cauca Valley, famous for its beauty and wealth. Through the kindness of R. S. Botsford, we present a panorama of the city, showing the 5000-ft. mountains in the background, a picture of the cathedral, locally said to be the largest building in South America, and a sketch of the diversion work on the Nari river, near Alejandria, where C. J. London is opening 42 kilometers of placer ground. One of the hydraulic elevators at the mine is also shown. Medellin was formerly much isolated but 19 now connected with navigation on the Magdalena River by a railway from Puerto Berrio, passing through a recently completed tunnel under the central Andes.

J. B. Seabrook' recently published properties of a low-alloy Ni-A1 age-hardening steel known commercially as "Nitralloy-N". He mentioned three possible mechanisms of age hardening, viz. order-disorder in the matrix, order -disorder in a precipitate, and a precipitate that goes in and out of solution reversibly without losing coherency. The following results indicate that the last - mentioned of these mechanisms is the cause of age hardening in Nitralloy-N. The reversibility of the age hardening with a sub-critical solution temperature was demonstrated strikingly by Seabrook, whose results are reproduced in Fig. 1. Aging for 22 hr at 975°F (525°C) can reharden the fully-tempered martensite to its original as-quenched hardness of R, 45. A Nitralloy steel was obtained from Seabrook' with the following analysis:

The basis for Rittinger's rule was the thought that the energy to grind a substance went largely into supplying the additional energy associated with the new free surface, while Kick's law was prompted by the concept of dimensional similarity and is a special statement of the concept of constancy of strain energy to cause rupture. The manpower and time involved in primary blasthole stemming at Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Bingham Canyon mine have been reduced considerable through the use of a mobile stemming machine invented y three mine employees. The patented machine, developed 2% years ago at an estimated cost of $5000 for two units, is the brainchild of Thomas R. Carlson, mine plant superintendent; Alvin J. McIntosh, drilling and blasting engineer; and Jay K. Buehler, field repair general foreman. According to McIntosh, the machine has been well received by the mine employees, who have been relieved of the tedious task of hand shoveling drill cuttings into the blastholes. It is estimated that the stemming machine has saved the mine approximately $25,000 per year in overtime and regular labor costs.

Y.).-It may be n matter of some interest that sodium cyanide is now being made commercially by melting together in an electric furnace calcium cyanide with a common salt, which produces calcium chloride and sodium cyanide. It seems to me entirely possible that you have here about the same results that would be obtained by melting calcium chloride and ordinary cyanide together, only you obtain it a good deal cheaper. There is no doubt about that reaction once it is being carried on on a large industrial scale for the manufacture of cyanide for other uses. I think probably the same, thing takes place here, with the possible exception of lowering the melting point due to the presence of the calcium chloride.

L. R. Plitt (Assistant Professor of Mining and Metallurgy, University of Alberta, Canada.) — It is indeed encouraging to see rheological studies being carried out in a mineral engineering school. The bulk of the work being done today in applied rheology seems to be concerned with the behavior of polymeric solutions and thus has limited application to the solid-liquid systems encountered in mineral beneficiation. The authors have approached the problem by carrying out a dimensional analysis which showed that for power law fluids the drag coefficient, Ds, must be some function of a generalized Reynolds number which has the form: If the power law adequately describes the behavior of a fluid, the dimensional analyses predicts that the Ds - RN function should hold for all values of n' or any other dependent variable. Flotation data indicate that sulfonate and amine adsorb physically on manganese oxide; oleate also adsorbs physically if the zero point of charge is sufficiently high. Chemisorption of oleate occurs on pyrolusite between pH 8 and 9, and possible mechan- isms of collector adsorption involving metal ion hydrolysis are discussed. The flotation characteristics of most metal oxides1-15 have been examined with standard collectors such as fatty acids and sulfonates. From these studies it would appear as though electrical phenomena are important when shorte r-chained collectors are involved. For example, Iwasaki, Cooke, and Choi9 have shown that dodecyl amine and dodecyl sulfate float iron oxide above and below the zero point of charge, respectively. In another system, D.W. A GIFT of $10,000 to the endowment of Engineering Foun-dation, made by the Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation, has been announced. In transmitting this gift T. R. Beal, president of the corporation, made the follow-ing interesting statement: "You may be interested to know that this amount was in fact earned by our employees by their more efficient opera-tion of the physical properties under their care.
