This coal area, and the coal from a limited portion of it, has been known for a long time. In 1817, McClure prepared a geological map to represent the boundaries, and they are not controverted at the present date. In 1834, Richard C. Taylor made a survey and report on portions of the basin. In 1835, Prof. W. B. Rogers was appointed by the State of Virginia to make a geological survey, and made six annual reports in which this area was included; but the reports and maps were not published. R. C. Taylor's Statistics of Coal, published in 1855, gave to the public the details of exploration and production, to date, very perfectly and completely. Daddorw and Bannan's work, Coal, Iron, and Oil, published in 1866, repeated the details before given, and advanced some vague theories respecting the coal-field, but gave no new facts. Macfarlane's work, Coal Regions of America, published in 1873, under the head of " Triassic Coal," chapter 27, gives what is known from existing publications of the position, geology, and production of the field, making

W. R. CHEDSEY first saw the light of day in Boulder, Colo., in 1887, and will celebrate his birthday on Feb. 11. Mining early attracted him, so he went to the Colorado School of Mines, from which he received his E.M. in 1908, and an honorary doctor's degree thirty years later. The next three years he spent at the University of Idaho, doing special work in mechanical and electrical engineering and serving as associate professor of mining engineering. Leaving Idaho in 1911 he went to Central America as chief engineer and general superintendent of the Central American Development Co. The next year he jumped several thousand miles to the north to become chief engineer and assistant general manager of the Alaska Exploration Co. But teaching was Chedsey's choice so he returned to his alma mater, serving on the faculty at Golden from 1913 to 1916. Then to Penn State where he was professor of mining for 21 years, until going to Rolla to become director of the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1937.

Until the end of 1960, the small primary aluminum industry in Australia was run by the government. The entire operation was at Bell Bay on the north coast of Tasmania. It consisted of an alumina plant and smelter, owned jointly by the Commonwealth and the State of Tasmania. Apparent domestic demand that year was about 48,000 long tons; 11% thousand came from Bell Bay; the rest was imported. By March 1964, Australia had two fully integrated aluminum companies. The government has stepped out of the picture and the key word of the industry from bauxite to metal is "growth." Present annual capacity of the two companies for making aluminum metal totals 92,000 long tons a year. Australian demand is about 60,000 tons. By 1968 Australian consumption should be 90,000 tons and by 1970 it is expected to reach 107,000 long tons per year. Export markets for bauxite, alumina and metal are developing.

IN the last 15 years industrial use of ground water has more than doubled, and in 1951 amounted to 5 billion gallons per day. A similar sharp increase in the utilization of ground water for irrigation and public-water supply occurred in the same period. In many areas rapid increase in withdrawal from wells has taken place almost entirely unhampered by regulatory control and with little or no integration of effort. As might be expected, the chief interest in many regions has been maximum production rather than sustained perennial yield. As a result, widespread depletion of underground reservoirs and deterioration of the quality of the water stored in them has taken place in many areas, even though total pumpage in the United States is far below ultimate potential. Of even more concern is the fact that excessive withdrawal has drawn salt water into the reservoirs beneath many heavily populated centers along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts, causing costly abandonment of pumping plants.1

The experiments described in this publication were inspired by the Bell System's large interest in lead-alloy sheathed cables and by the wide range of fatigue and corroding conditions to which they are sometimes subjected in service. The first experiments consisted of operating specimens of lead + I per cent antimony telephone cable sheath alloy in a fatigue test while they were immersed in water taken from a manhole. Because of many published reports concerning corrosion-fatigue phenomena of various metals and alloys, a reduction in fatigue life was expected(1)2 Instead, however, the fatigue test ran on for many times the normal number of cycles an4 was finally stopped without failure. Because of this, the experiments were broadened to include the effect of many media on the fatigue properties of four lead alloys over a wide range of testing speeds and strains. Although tunneling machines have attained very high advance rates in medium-hard rocks, the need for frequent repairs has slowed their use in very hard rocks. Laser- assisted tunneling is expected to improve tunneling machine performance by improving either specific energy or amount and quality of muck. The beneficial effects of lasing are the initiation and growth of microcracks from differential thermal expansion of grains, and overall spalling in the vicinity of the lased area. Using a constant thrust rock cutting device with disk cutters, the effects of cutter geometry, cutter diameter, thrust, and speed variations on specific energy and muck were explored and the improvement in performance of disk cutters caused by lasing was evaluated. It was found that the improvement depends on beam power and density, beam speed, pattern of heating, and cutting pattern and procedure. A focused beam slightly offset from the cutter path gives the most improvement both when cutting on a smooth surface and when cutting in previously cut grooves.

THE occurrence of concentration distributions in rapidly cooled castings with gradients of opposite sign to those expected on the basis of the constitution diagram and diffusion controlled kinetics, has long interested metallurgists. The work on inverse segregation to 1937 has been adequately reviewed by Vaughan, and to 1949 by ell-walpole. The general conclusion for unidirectional solidification, that the enrichment of the initially solidifying regions with lower melting point compositions is due to the flow-back along interdendritic channels of normally segregated residual liquid, has a very sound experimental basis. Perhaps the best experimental work and the most complete qualitative description of the process has been given by Adams.3 The authors accordingly assume the reader's understanding of the content of this paper. It appears that one of the principal deterrents to the complete understanding of the process has been the lack of an analytical description. Although a number of workers including Masing,4-6 Sauerwald,7 and Adams3 have attempted quantitative predictions,

Flue gas desulfurization when burning western U.S. coals can be expected to be easier to achieve and less costly than when burning higher sulfur eastern and central coals. However, western coals cannot generally be burned in compliance with federal and state new source emission standards without some degree of control. Western coals and lignite represent about 20% of total U.S. recoverable reserves with 90% of that strip minable, and their production is predicted to increase from the 60 million tons mined in 1973 to 300 million tons in 1985. Most will be used for electric power generation, where low sulfur content is a paramount concern. Western coals are predominantly below 1% sulfur; low compared with typical values of 2 and 3% for eastern and central coals. Coal cleaning for removal of sulfur is not commercially practiced on Western coals, which typically contain half organic and half pyritic sulfur. This paper presents the feasibility analyses of terrace pit mining a single seam for depths beyond 33 m (110 feet) in a hypothetical model mine and at an operating mine in southern Illinois. One or two shovel- truck benches near the surface and a large dragline for the last bench are considered for overburden stripping in the proposed mining scheme. Mining and reclamation operations are integrated and reclamation efforts are minimized by proper spoiling techniques. The proposed mining scheme was optimized using the OPMHS (Open Pit Material Handling Simulator) model developed by Penn State. Equipment selection and economic analyses were also conducted using the simulation model. The effect of pertinent variables such as thickness of the coal seam, annual production, initial capital requirements, size of haul trucks, selling price of coal and expected rate of return were analyzed on the feasibility of terrace pit mining. Sensitivity analysis charts for the effect of these variables are presented in the paper.

WHEN the Cushing field flooded the oil market in 1914 and 1915 with a daily output equal to nearly one-third of the world's production, the situation was soon corrected by increased consumption, and the price of crude oil rose from 45 c. per barrel in, February 1915 to $1.10 in December of the same year-the highest price paid in the Mid-Continent field up to that time. The intensive search for oil during the following seven years failed to disclose a single new ,field equal to Cushing, and many observers concluded that the rapidly increasing number of wells contributing to the world's output, each declining roughly 20 per cent. a year, combined with the rapidly increasing con¬sumption of petroleum, made it highly improbable that any field would; be found again sufficiently large to seri¬ously affect the oil market. That seven exceptional fields should then be discovered simultaneously is a remarkable coincidence. Long Beach, Santa Fe Springs, and Powell, each exceeded Cushing in daily output and reached the apex of their production during a year when Burbank, Tonkawa, - Smackover and Huntington Beach each contributed several times the daily output of the average new pool. This unexpected and tremendous flood of flush production could only have the effect of depressing price and greatly adding to stocks throughout the country. It was particularly depressing in the Mid-Continent as the new oil from California proved of attractive refining grade and because of cheap transportation by water easily undersold Oklahoma crude in the eastern markets.

The internal friction (1/Q) of cobalt Fig. 1 (measured by an electrostatic dynamic method1) near 250°C begins to increase rapidly on heating and continues to increase until 560°C, the highest tem- perature measured. In the plot of log of 1/Q against 1/T, above 250°C the data nearly fit two straight lines intersecting at 400°C, approximately the temperature of the hexagonal-cubic transformation. R. W. NEWCOMB, New York, N. Y. (written discussion*).-0n page 1712, the middle paragraph states that, in industrial equipment, only the single-step method of automatic regulation has been applied. Quite recently, there has been developed an automatic temperature regulator, operating in conjunction with a pyrometer of the thermoelectric type, in which the control is a slow regulation, with a range capable of regulat-ing valves, dampers, rheostats, or any other rotatable member, through one or more complete revolutions. It can control two valves at the same time, with a fixed definite ratio between them. Aside from those conditions in which it is. necessary to control two valves with a definite ratio one to the other, the greatest advantage that this slow, even control will have over those controls that are either all on or all off, will be for use in connection with processes where a large temperature variation is required, extended over a considerable period of time; that is, where the temperature must be regulated along an in-creasing or decreasing time-temperature curve.

A development which could prove significant was the announcement on September 18 by Lone Star Industries, Inc., Greenwich, Conn., that the Snyder process which utilizes shock phenomena to break down ore in seconds, is operational. J. R. Kringel, chairman and president of Lone Star, says this about the process: "This new approach to the comminution of ores not only provides better mineral liberation at lower capital and operating costs, but it also makes a significant contribution toward the more efficient utilization of the country's rapidly depleting mineral reserves." The Snyder process consists of loading the material into a chamber, introducing a compressible working fluid such as steam under 300-500 psi, or as low as 80 psi, and then opening a millisecond-action discharge valve, causing the material to become entrained in the expanding fluid. The mixed fluid moves through a duct toward a discharge zone at near-sonic velocity, and is subject to a variety of extreme shock phenomena which accomplish the desired size reduction and mineral liberation.

The following communication has just reached the Institute, from the office of the Provincial Geologist, Department of Lands,-Forests and Mines, Ontario, Canada: During the autumn of 1917 gold was discovered in unsurveyed territory south of Lake Abitibi in northeastern Ontario. This area lies about 70 miles almost directly east of the well known Porcupine area. During the coming summer, the Ontario Bureau of Mines is to make a geological survey of this new gold area. Following the custom of Ontario, this area is being divided into townships, 6 miles square. These townships have recently been given the following names in honor of men well known in the mining and geological world. In alphabetical order the names are as follows: Frecheville-Prof. Wm. Frecheville, Professor of Mining in the Royal School of Mines, London; Past President of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy. Garrison-Mr. F. Lynwood Garrison, Mining Engineer, Philadelphia, Pa. At our plant (Bethlehem Steel Co.), we have had several Bradshaw burners under course of construction and erection for some time, but up to the present we have not had opportunity to put them in service. I regret that I can not take part in the discussion with some actual results from these, burners. Mr. Huessener properly emphasizes the importance of obtaining the highest combustion temperature practicable in boiler practice, which demands a near approach to perfect combustion conditions. The ideal burner is the one which, while meeting the various mechanical, requirements, fulfills the above condition under a wide range of gas pressure. The question as to the relative value of hot raw gas and cold washed gas for boiler use is a very interesting one. I think that in the past the importance of low temperature of washed gas sometimes has been over-emphasized. Mr. Huessener has pointed out that so far as temperature is concerned, no advantage accrues in washing gas below 100° F. In

George Ellery Hale, Director of the Mount Wilson Observatory and Foreign Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences, who has been for the last ten years a Correspondent of the Academie des Sciences, Institut de France, has received the unusual honor of election as Associe Etranger, taking the place of Adolph von Baeyer, declared vacant by the Academy. The Foreign Associates are limited to twelve, and the high distinction has been held by only two Americans-Simon Newcomb and Alexander Agassiz. The National Research Council upon the presentation and acceptance of. Dr. Hale's resignation as its Chairman and the election of James R. Angell as his successor, created and bestowed in perpetuity upon Dr. Hale the title of Honorary Chairman in recognition of his services to the National Research Council and to Science and Research by indefatigable efforts that have contributed so largely to the organization of science for the assistance of the Government during the war, and the augmentation of the resources of the United States through the newly intensive cultivation of research in the reconstruction and peace periods that follow.

Looking forward to growing demand for the output of the coal mines over the next decade, producers face serious problems in meeting the market. Among the difficulties are the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, wildcat strikes, growing shortage of skilled and supervisory labor, pollution control and rising costs. The two-day program, planned by R. L. Frantz, covered all of these subjects and presented a few remarks on such wholesomely noncontroversial matters as ground support. A prediction of coal for electricity generation in 1980 was made by Philips amounting to 550 million tons, an amount equal to total output now, With respect to competition in this market, he said: "For the foreseeable future there is enough energy demand for all participating fuels." Banana oil conies not from bananas but from coal and science may just convert coal to meat loaf or some other surprising application may come out of research for product markets. Philips sees no revolution in mining methods although longwall mining will be expanded.
