As summarized in a re- cent symposium of the Electrochemical Society on "Mechanical Properties of Inter metallic Compound", most of the experimental evidence regarding the mechanical behavior of intermetallic compounds centers about the effect of temperature on the hardness and ductility of polycrystalline specimens. The available data reveal that the plastic behavior of intermetallic compounds might be rationalized in terms of the usual dislocation mechanisms appropriate to a solid solutions providing the additional complexities arising from crystal structure, long-range ordering, short-range ordering, and defect lattices are taken into consideration. It is apparent, however, in terms of the history on a solid solutions, that a complete detailed mechanistic rationalization of dislocation processes may not be possible until the deformation processes are studied in single crystals of intermetallic compounds. The present paper contains a preliminary report on the plastic behavior of single crystals of the hexagonal Ag-A1 intermetallic phase over a wide range of temperatures. The results confirm the thesis that single crystal data provide a most effective method of identifying operative dislocation mechanisms in intermetallic compounds. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Several factors prompted the selection of the hexagonal Ag-A1 intermetallic phase for this preliminar investigation on the plastic properties of single crystals of intermetallic compounds: 1) This phase has a wide solubility range5 which would permit future investigations on the effect of composition and axial ratios on slip mechanisms. 2) Although it undoubtedly exhibits short-range ordering (or clustering) this intermetallic phase is free from complexities arising from long-range ordering.6 3) Since the atomic radii of aluminum and silver are practically identical, the possible complications due to Cottrell locking are minimized. 4)Whereas the dislocations on the basal planes are expected to dissociate into Shockley partials and are thus susceptible to Suzuki locking, those on the prismatic planes probably remain complete. 5) The axial ratio, being 1.61, is almost ideal, suggesting that short-range ordering may be almost spherically symmetrical. The present investigation was conducted exclusively with the hexagonal Ag-A1 alloy containing 33 at. pct Al. Preliminary investigations revealed that this alloy undergoes basal slip by the (0001)

The characteristics of the motion of the a interface during the "down" transformation was studied in zone-refined iron and dilute binary alloys containing nickel and molybdenum by means of the thermionic emission microscope and high speed photography. The frontal movements were found in all cases to be definitely discontinuous with time and an appreciable number of incremental jumps were found to proceed in the reverse direction (a to b). Molybdenum was found to be particularly effective in increasing the frequency of the increments of transformation from the stable to the metastable phase. A knowledge of the mechanism by which alloying elements affect the hardenability of a steel is desirable from both the practical and scientific viewpoints. It is well established that microstructures consisting of tempered martensite and lower bainite exhibit the best performance in terms of toughness and resistance to crack propagation. The presence of some upper transformation products, namely ferrite and pearlite, is in general undesirable. Various researches have indicated that the ferrite matrix grain structure is a very important difference between the upper and lower transformation products, namely equi-axed vs acicular. Any comprehensive theory of the decomposition of austenite should explain the dependency of the morphology of the matrix on undercooling. The contribution of various alloying elements to hardenability has been determined experimentally and catalogued in considerable detail. A rationalization of the basic mechanism or mechanisms by which individual elements affect the kinetics of the decomposition of austenite to products other than the phase "martensite" has not been evolved as yet. Interest in this problem was stimulated by the effects of minute quantities of boron in hardenable steels. This paper deals with one aspect of this problem, namely the characteristics of the ?-a transformation in high-purity iron and in two carbon-free iron binary alloys. A detailed historical account of the scientific developments in the study of the decomposition of austenite would be a prodigious undertaking and will not be attempted here. There are several excellent reviews in the literature on the formation of pearlite, martensitic reactions, and kinetics of solid-state reactions. The thinking on reaction mechanisms has been influenced to a large degree by the "classical" Tammann nucleation and growth model, in which an embryo springs into being by a fluctuation, and grows to a critical size through atom by atom deposition. Such a process is expected, accordingly, to be diffusion controlled. Considerable research attempting to relate the contribution of alloying elements to hardenability on the basis of their effect on the diffusivity of carbon in iron has not been productive from a mechanistic viewpoint. The formation of pearlite and ferrite has been treated in terms of nucleation and growth processes in which presumably the lattice transformation also occurs by a diffusion process. The other prominently considered mechanism is the "martensitic" or cooperative shearing mechanism. A magnetic field has been used to damp out liquid convection during the solidification of castings. Ingots of Al-2 pct Cu were poured from various sperheats (10" to 65°C) into a room-temperature graphite mold located between the poles of an electromagnet. The effect on ingot structure of varying the strength and time of application of the magnetic field was investigated, and the results are interpreted in light 01- current theories of ingot structure. In the solidification of alloy systems, thermal gradients in the melt and differences in density of the constituents are expected to produce convective motion in the liquid. The thermal convection caused by temperature gradients should be present during the freezing of both alloys and pure materials, while the solute convection caused by density differences should be of concern only for alloys. The possible influence of this natural convection on the structure of castings has been discussed by Ruddle,&apos; Chalmers, and Tiller. More recently, an experimental investigation of such effects was carried out by Cole and Bolling. These workers took stationary molds containing lead- and tin-based alloys and. using a brine solution. quenched them from various superheats above their respective liquidus temperatures. When grids were placed across the mold diameter to suppress convection, the grid region was later observed to contain a larger percentage of columnar grains than other parts of the casting or than similar castings poured without the grids present. From thermocouple measurements, they found the temperature in the grid region to be higher than that in the region outside the grids throughout the freezing process, and concluded that convection should be an important mode of heat transfer in normal castings. In addition to such convection arising from thermal gradients or differences in density of the constituents, a further source of convective motion, which we shall call "momentum convection", may be particularly important in small (laboratory-size) castings. By this term we refer to the convective motion produced in the initial pouring process, a motion which is damped out as the linear momentum and angular momentum of the liquid are dissipated. Besides these sources of convection, which are present to some extent in all castings. external influences may also be effective in producing convective motion. Examples of such "forced" convection which have been discussed in the literature include stirring the melt, shaking the mold, rotating the mold, and so forth The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of convection on the structure of castings poured into a cold mold. The creep behavior of an aluminum -aluminum oxide alloy, A T 400, fabricated by compacting an atomized aluminum powder, extruding the compact, cold working, and recrystallizing the extrusion, was investigated. This alloy has a dispersion spacing of 1 . Previously Ansell and Weertman determined the steady-state creep rate of a recrystallized aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-type alloy, MD 2100, with a 0.48-p dispersion. This alloy was found to have a steady-state creep rate of less than 10-6 min-1, too small to be measured accurately. By employing a more sensitive method of measuring creep rate, it was possible to determine the steady-state creep rate of AT 400 alloy, which is somewhat faster than that of MD 2100, at a series of temperature and applied stresses. Above a stress of Burger&apos;s vector, A = dispersion spacing, u = is a shear modulus) the rate follms an equation of the type: Steady-state creep rate K = A exp. where A is a constant, Q is the activation energy for sey-diffusion, and is the applied stress. At stresses lower than the steady-state creep rate drops off sharply and is no longer in agreement with this equation. This behavior is in good agreement with that predicted by the model for dispersion strengthened alloys in the stress and temperature range investigated. The absolute value of the creep rate is, however, four orders of magnitude lower than that predicted if the normal number of active dislocation sources are assumed to be present. It is concluded that in this SAP-type alloy the usual three-dimensional dislocation network is not present. Instead, short dislocation segments extending from one dispersed particle and terminating at a neighboring particle may act as dislocation sources. With this provision the creep model proposed by Ansell and Weertman reasonably accounts for the creep behavior which was observed. RECENTLY, Ansell and Weertman1 proposed a dislocation model from which they derived creep equations to describe the steady-state creep behavior of dispersion - strengthened alloys. Following Schoeck,2 they assumed that the rate controlling process for steady-state creep is the climb of dislocations over the dispersed particles. In order to verify their creep model, Ansell and Weertman determined the steady-state creep behavior of an aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-type alloy, MD-2100, in both the fine-grained as-extruded, and coarse-grained recrystallized conditions. Since the grain size was the order of the dispersion-spacing, their model was not applicable for the as-ex- truded alloy. It should, however, be applicable to the coarse-grained recrystallized alloy. The results they obtained were rather unexpected. No meas-ureable steady-state creep was observed for the recrystallized MD-2100 alloy. If their model is correct, and if the second-phase particles act solely to hinder dislocation motion, then some measureable steady-state creep would have been expected. On this basis, they postulated that, in this SAP-type alloy, the main effect of the fine dispersion was to inactivate dislocation sources rather than to hinder the movement of dislocations. In order to understand more fully this unusual creep behavior, and to determine the validity of the model proposed,&apos; the steady-state creep behavior of an aluminum-aluminum oxide recrystallized SAP-type alloy, with a somewhat coarser dispersion spacing, was investigated. The results of this study are presented in this paper.

Why and how the nuclear industry entered the electric power generation business is discussed in terms that nuclear energy was an undoubtedly additional energy resource and that it had promise of becoming a virtually inexhaustible generating power if breeder reactors could be devised. The growth of nuclear power, its total generation capacity, are related to the need of increasing energy requirements. The use of atomic energy for power generation will grow if it can compete economically with other fuels. The rate of growth, the time scale and direction of technical development is dependent on ore supplies. It is predicted that by 1980, 50% of all new power installations will be nuclear stations. INTRODUCTION Ten years ago, the nuclear industry was virtually unborn, the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 had just been signed, and peaceful applications of atomic power was little more than a phrase. Serious discussion of the practical application of nuclear energy to electric utility installations in the West was highly unlikely. The questions: Why and how did the nuclear industry enter the electric power generation business at all?; What is the predicted growth of nuclear power?; What technological changes do we predict?; How will the above changes affect the utilities? will in part be answered by this paper. WHY NUCLEAR POWER? The only justification for the West as for any other section of the country for atomic power is economics. Whatever energy source will provide the lowest generation cost will prevail; the only electric utilities which have shown an interest in nuclear power are those to whom it means lower generation costs. It is true that the Government sponsored the development of this technology long before there was any evidence of better economics; but a Government must take a very long-range view and it is the only type of organization that can afford to look more than twenty or thirty years into the future. The Government looked at projections such as shown in Fig. 1, which shows various rates of energy consumption, and matched these against estimates of fossil fuel resources. This showed that we will exhaust our low-cost fossil fuel supplies within 75 to 100 years and our total known fuel supplies within 150 to 200 years. The decision to invest in nuclear energy rested, therefore, on two arguments: a) It was undoubtedly an additional energy resource; and b) It has promise of becoming a virtually inex-haustable resource if breeder reactors could be devised if, while generating power, the reactors would produce more fissile materials than they consumed. This decision produced an unexpected bonus: nuclear power became competitive with fossil power much earlier than had been expected and, as shown in Fig. 2, forced the coal industry to take a hard look at its own position. I believe that the drop of coal prices shown here is the direct result of the entry of nuclear power into the energy supply business. At this point, it ought to be explained why and under what conditions nuclear power can be cheaper than fossil power. Fossil fuel cost to the utility is composed of two factors: a) Mining; and b) Transportation. As a result, the cost of fossil fuel to the utilities varies from 126, 106 Btu to 306, 106 Btu and higher. Nuclear energy is highly concentrated and the transportation factor becomes insignificant. The dynamic behavior of a multiple fluid system is completely describable in terms of driving forces and resistances to flow. The latter are proportional to the viscosity of the fluid under consideration and inversely proportional to a property of the system termed the " effective permeability " to that fluid, a property therefore defined by this relation. Since three phases are usually present in oil reservoirs, it is essential to know the effective permeabilities to the several fluid phases, and the relationship between the composition of the fluid in the pore space and that of the flowing stream, in order to handle satisfactorily certain problems of oil production. In this regard, there are many unknown factors and parameters, and many that can be evaluated only indirectly. However, it is expected that work along lines similar to this present undertaking will help materially in solving these problems. .. . . Previous workers in this field have investigated the two-phase systems, water-gas,&apos; water-oil2 in unconsolidated sands, and water-gasg in consolidated sands. The extension of the study of the flow of heterogeneous fluid systems from two to three phases involved only slight changes in technique. The apparatus used in the present work, except for slight changes to be described, was that used by Leverett in his water-oil experiments.~ Correlation and interpretation of data were made by methods analogous to those used in two- phase work. The relative permeability to a phase—the effective permeability divided by the permeability of the system to a homogeneous fluid—was employed throughout in correlating the rate of flow of that phase with the composition of the pore space. Quantitative measurements of two independent physical properties of the system were required to determine the composition of the pore space. As in the two-phase work, the fraction of water was determined electrically, The gas fraction was determined by measuring changes in volume accompanying measured pressure changes. Suitable account was taken of the solubility of the gas in the liquid phases, and of the vapor pressure of the water phase. Since this work was exploratory in nature, no attempt was made to obtain highly accurate numerical results. Reasonable precision and reproducibility were sought. Experimental Procedure variables Considered.—Of the properties of the fluids, the oil viscosity is most likely in practice to vary widely. Variations in oil viscosity were therefore included in this work, but variations in other properties of the fluids are as yet unexplored. It appears unlikely that the normally encountered variations will produce significant changes. ~h~ observations were made at fairly high pressure gradients, no attempt being made to detect a variation of the relative permeabilities with pressure gradient. In the introduction to an excellent pamphlet, John Gross&apos; makes the following statements: Although marked progress has been made along mechanical lines, the theory and conception of underlying principles have not advanced so rapidly. This lack of advance in theory may be attributed to the unfortunate situation resulting from the controversy as to whether the Rittinger or Kick law is applicable to crushing. Many pages of the technical literature are burdened with theoretical discussions in favor of one or the other of these laws, which have tended to cloud rather than to clear the atmosphere. Realizing the situation, the Milling Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, through its secretary, E. A. Hersam, studied the milling industry and, because of the apparently hopeless lack of agreement in the Kick versus Rittinger dispute (5, 13, 14, 16, 18. 19. 21, 22, 23, 24, 30, 34). concluded that a foundation lor the theory of crushing was of primary importance. The numbers in the paragraph quoted refer to papers listed by Mr. Gross in his Bibliography on Crushing and Grinding.I One is obliged to infer that these papers show "hopeless lack of agreement in the Kick versus Rittinger dispute." No. 22 is a paper by Arthur 0. Gates2 and No. 23 is one by the writer.3 Employing the subject matter contained in papers Nos. 22 and 232,3 the writer will show that their authors formulated identical conclusions, based solely on experimental evidence. Exactly the same defect in the Stadler hypothesis was described in each of the two papers, although entirely different experimental methods were employed in uncovering it. Both of the authors, independently, formulated the conclusion that Rittinger&apos;s was a true hypothesis and Stadler&apos;s false. The evidence in a third paper4 will be employed to prove that Stadler&apos;s hypothesis, when examined experimentally, is worthless. Stadler&apos;s Hypothesis Worthless It is the writer&apos;s opinion that the evidence available in 1915 and the corroborating evidence in 1916 was amply sufficient to eliminate the need for any further consideration of Stadler&apos;s hypothesis. Certainly the evidence produced in 1918 dealt this hypothesis its coup de grace. It follows, therefore, that in the year 1918 there was only one credible hypothesis left—the Rittinger hypothesis. Gates&apos; Opinion What information is available in Mr. Gates&apos; paper?2 His conclusions are not consecutively summarized, none the less they are perfectly clear. On page 876, Gates says, and it is a very significant utterance: But my results show, among other things. that many more of Stadler&apos;s energy units are obtained per foot-pound-applied in coarse than in finc crushing. This suggests a doubt as to the correctness of his unit, since one would expect a foot-pound-applied to produce the same number of "energy units," whether the feed and resulting product were coarse or fine. Many pages of the technical literature are burdened with theoretical discussions in favor of one or the other of these laws, which have tended to cloud rather than to clear the atmosphere. Realizing the situation, the Milling Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, through its secretary, E. A. Hersam, studied the milling industry and, because of the apparently hopeless lack of agreement in the Kick versus Rittinger dispute (5, 13, 14, 16, 18. 19. 21, 22, 23, 24, 30, 34). concluded that a foundation lor the theory of crushing was of primary importance. The numbers in the paragraph quoted refer to papers listed by Mr. Gross in his Bibliography on Crushing and Grinding.I One is obliged to infer that these papers show "hopeless lack of agreement in the Kick versus Rittinger dispute." No. 22 is a paper by Arthur 0. Gates2 and No. 23 is one by the writer.3 Employing the subject matter contained in papers Nos. 22 and 232,3 the writer will show that their authors formulated identical conclusions, based solely on experimental evidence. Exactly the same defect in the Stadler hypothesis was described in each of the two papers, although entirely different experimental methods were employed in uncovering it. Both of the authors, independently, formulated the conclusion that Rittinger&apos;s was a true hypothesis and Stadler&apos;s false. The evidence in a third paper4 will be employed to prove that Stadler&apos;s hypothesis, when examined experimentally, is worthless. Stadler&apos;s Hypothesis Worthless It is the writer&apos;s opinion that the evidence available in 1915 and the corroborating evidence in 1916 was amply sufficient to eliminate the need for any further consideration of Stadler&apos;s hypothesis. Certainly the evidence produced in 1918 dealt this hypothesis its coup de grace. It follows, therefore, that in the year 1918 there was only one credible hypothesis left—the Rittinger hypothesis. Gates&apos; Opinion What information is available in Mr. Gates&apos; paper?2 His conclusions are not consecutively summarized, none the less they are perfectly clear. On page 876, Gates says, and it is a very significant utterance: But my results show, among other things. that many more of Stadler&apos;s energy units are obtained per foot-pound-applied in coarse than in finc crushing. This suggests a doubt as to the correctness of his unit, since one would expect a foot-pound-applied to produce the same number of "energy units," whether the feed and resulting product were coarse or fine. THE third annual Joint Western Mining Convention, held at Los Angeles, Sept. 10 to 13 inclusive, was a notable success both as to attendance and interest. Registration the first day amounted to 201, and the total crept up to 347 before the close. The American Institute of Mining Engineers was well represented, approximately 80% of those registered and most of the speakers being members. This illustrates largely the amount of interlocking membership and the reason for holding at one time and place meetings of the several related organizations. The plan has proved so successful that it is probable that Spokane will extend an invitation for next year that seems likely to be accepted. It is proposed that the convention be timed so as to permit visitors from the East to stop there Oct. 3 to 5, en route to the American Institute of Mining Engineers meeting at San Francisco, Oct. 7 to 9. Simultaneously, it is expected that the Petroleum Division will hold its fall session at Los Angeles, the two streams of travel meeting in San Francisco, just before departure of the party of engineers traveling to Japan to attend the World&apos;s Engineering Congress. The Los Angeles meeting opened Monday morning with a general session under the auspices of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress with Philip Wiseman in the chair. After a series of short responses to the welcome extended, Charles W. Merrill discussed the needs of the western mining industry. A complimentary luncheon to members and delegates followed.

During the past several years the steel casting industry has made studies of heavy castings in which the test bar has been taken from heavy sections rather than from attached or separately cast coupons. It has been noted that the ductility properties of these heavy sections are often lower than those normally expected. Such lowered ductility is usually accompanied by a spotty test bar fracture and the ductility values often can be greatly improved if a low-temperature aging treatment is given to the casting. A loss of ductility of this type is considered "abnormal," since it is not accompanied by an increase of tensile strength or hardness, and "temporary" when the ductility can be restored by aging, The cure of such an abnormal condition represents a real improvement in the quality of the steel. Some hundreds of previous investigations, largely qualitative in nature, have established beyond reasonable doubt that hydrogen is normally present in newly manufactured steel and that this gas, in small amounts, can cause a temporary ab- normal loss of ductility. The commonly observed association of high gas content and low ductility has given strong evidence for the presumption that hydrogen, possibly assisted by other gases, is the primary cause of the low ductility observed. Accordingly, the Steel Founders&apos; Society of America has, since Nov. I, 1944, sponsored investigations at Battelle Memorial Institute whose primary objective is to obtain quantitative information on the relation of the amount of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel, together with associated methods of steelmaking and treatment, to low-ductility effects and porosity. In order that these investigations might proceed on a quantitative basis, hydrogen analyses of a precision considerably higher than any previously reported in the literature were necessary. &apos;The method chosen was selected entirely on the basis that it had the highest probability of freedom from uncontrollable errors and will be described in detail in another publication.&apos; Briefly, the method used consisted of the hot extraction of solid pieces of steel weighing from 45 to 50 g in a highly evacuated quartz tube maintained at 1050°C (1925°F) for a period of approximately 40 hr. THERE are several postulations for the mechanism of slime-coating. Ince1 proposed the electrostatic hypothesis, del Giudice2 suggested the chemical theory; Bankoff3 reported that slime-coating is inhibited whenever the surfaces of the slime particles are ionized sufficiently for Brownian movement to occur, and is facilitated when they are not. These postulations were examined by experiments involving the Burton tube, the cataphoretic cell, and slime-coating. The techniques involved will be described elsewhere in this paper. The electrostatic hypothesis, supported by migration experiments in a Burton tube, was abandoned by del Giudice.2 Experiments of mineral migration in a Burton tube, after the idea of Ince with modification, indicated that this apparatus was inefficient for accurate observation. A cataphoretic cell was constructed. The experimental data, as shown in this paper, enable the correlation and advancing of this hypothesis. Del Giudice&apos;s chemical hypothesis considered that slime particles are attached to the galena surfaces by a cement formed as the result of a metathetical reaction between the sulphide and the slime particles. Applying this hypothesis, the calcite slime particles were cemented to the galena surface by the formation of a cementing lead carbonate. In a similar way, lead silicate was considered as the cement of quartz slime coating on galena. Experiments verifying this hypothesis were carried out according to the following procedure: Fresh mineral particles selected from the central part of the broken lumps and examined first under a microscope for ascertaining a clean surface were placed in a small beaker (1.5-in. dia. by 2.5 in. deep) half filled with one kind of slime pulp. The dilution of all slime pulp was 4: 1 and the particle size of slime was minus 400-mesh. After agitation for 5 min. the specimen was removed by a sharp-end tong and washed gently three times in three separate distilled water baths. It was dried before a small electrical fan and examined immediately under a microscope. A photograph was made of the observation. With reference to the published solubilities,4 several of these experiments, which contradict the chemical hypothesis, are listed as following: I. The coating of fluorite slime on the galena surface was light but the coating of galena slime on the fluorite surface was heavy. In a similar way, the coating of quartz slime on the galena was fairly light, but the coating of galena slime on the quartz particle was heavy. According to the chemical hypothesis, using the same constituents and regardless of which is the slime, the density of the coating should be expected to be the same. Since the introduction of the relative permeability concept in the middle thirties1,2 various investigators have shown3,10,11,12,15 how the basic equations for the flow of oil and gas through porous media can he utilized to compute the recovery from depletion type or solution gas drive type reservoirs under certain conditions, when the necessary physical data pertaining to the reservoir rock and its reservoir fluids are known. In the study by Muskat and Taylor" in 1945, the effects of viscosity, gas solubility, shrinkage, and the permeability-saturation characteristics of the producing formation on the production histories and the recovery of gas drive reservoirs were analyzed. Each parameter was varied a limited number of times, while keeping the others constant. The work was not carried to the point where the data could be used directly to estimate the primary recovery in those cases where certain rock and fluid characteristics were known or could be assumed. Since the publication of this classic study, the work by Beal in 194616 and Standing in 1952&apos;" has established general correlations of oil viscosity and shrinkage with gas solubility and oil gravity. In addition. a considerable number of relative permeability relationships for different types of reservoir rocks has been published2,5,13,17,19,20. Also, the burden of the numerical work required in the solutions of the differential equation has. during the last few years, been greatly reduced with the availability of modern electronic computing facilities. The purpose of this paper is therefore to present the results of a large number of such recovery computations covering the normal range of variation of the main parameters such as the type of rock, the API gravity of the oil, and the amount of gas in solution. As is to be expected, the ultimate recovery is found to increase with the oil gravity. except for the higher solution gas-oil ratios. Within the normal range of solubilities, the ultimate recovery generally appears to decrease with the amount of gas in solution for the higher oil gravities, and to show a slight increase for the lower oil gravities. Intermediate oil gravities seem to fall between the two trends. The type of reservoir rock, as identified by its relative permeability relationship, appears to have a very pronounced effect on the ultimate recovery. In general, sands and sandstones show higher recoveries than limestones and dolomites, although certain intergranular limestones seem to show a higher theoretical recovery than unconsolidated sand. The recovery from sands and sandstones generally decreases with increasing cementation and consolidation, while the recoveries from limestones and dolomites are highest for the intergranular type and lowest for the fracture type porosity.

Epitaxial growth of GaAs 1-xPx on germanium substrates was achieved using an open tube vapor transport system. The compositional range of 0.3 < x < 0.4 was examined. The best results were obtained with (311) orientation of the germanium substrate. The physical and chemical properties of the resulting layers were investigated using several techniques. Spectrographic analyses of the layers indicate substantial incorporation of germanium into the GaAs t-X Px layer. Evidence is presented which indicates that this incorporation occurs via a vapor phase transport process rather than by solid phase dijfu-sion. Electrical measurements suggest that the germanium thus incorporated behaves predominantly as a deep donor in the compositional range of 0.33 < x * 0.40 and has a deleterious effect upon the luminescent properties of GaAs1-x Px. The increasing technological importance of GaAs1-xPx for use in light-emitting devices has led to an evaluation of several aspects of existing growth processes. The method most commonly used to prepare GaAs1-xPx for electroluminescent device applications is vapor phase epitaxial growth on GaAs substrates.&apos;-4 In a typical electroluminescent diode structure the active region of the diode is entirely within the epitaxial layer and thus the electrical properties of the substrate are relatively unimportant since it is effectively a simple series resistance (assuming hetero-junction effects to be negligible). The use of germanium rather than GaAs as the substrate material is of interest for several reasons. First, GaAs of reasonable structural quality has been epitaxially grown on germanium4-2 and it is reasonable to expect that GaAs1-xPx could subsequently be deposited on the GaAs layer. Second, germanium substrates are readily available with both lower dislocation densities and larger areas than GaAs. Finally, single crystals of germanium are more economical than GaAs single crystals. The principal objective of the present investigation was to test the feasibility of growing GaAs1-xPx epi-taxially on germanium substrates, and to evaluate the properties of such layers with regard to electroluminescent device requirements. The approach used was to a) demonstrate epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx on germanium, and b) characterize the relevant structural, electrical, and optical properties of the GaAs1-xPx layers. The possibility of germanium incorporation into the grown layers was of special interest since there was some indication of this in previous studies of GaAs growth on germanium.5&apos;11,12 Although a study of the electrical properties of germanium in GaAs1-xPx was not an intent of this investigation, several features of the electrical properties of the layers grown in the present study which appear to be due to germanium are described. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The open-tube vapor transport system used for the epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx is illustrated in Fig. 1. This system utilizes the GaC1-GaC13 transport reaction and is similar in most respects to the larger system described elsewhere.&apos; The germanium substrates were n-type, with a resistivity of 40 ohm-cm (Eagle-Picher Co.). These were cut to the orientations of {100), {111), and (3111, and were mechanically polished and chemically etched in CP-4 (5 min at 0°C) prior to growth. In some cases, a GaAs substrate was employed in addition to the germanium. The orientation of the latter was {loo}, and they were also mechanically polished and chemically etched prior to growth. The initial composition of the deposited layer was pure GaAs. After approximately 10 microns of GaAs was deposited on the germanium substrate, the phosphorus content of the layer was gradually increased over a distance of approximately 15 microns to the desired concentration and maintained at this value throughout the remainder of the growth. Typical operating parameters used during growth are given in Table I. Selenium was used as a n-type dopant in several runs to facilitate comparison of the electrical properties of the layers grown on germanium with those of layers grown on GaAs substrates, which are usually doped with selenium. The concentration of H2Se in the gas phase was adjusted to a value which would normally yield a carrier density of 1 to 5 x 101 7 at room temperature in layers grown on GaAs substrates. The terminal surfaces of the epitaxial layers were examined by optical microscopy for structural characteristics. Laue back-reflection photographs (Cu radi-ation) were also made on the terminal surface to verify the epitaxial nature of the deposit. After these steps

ManY semiconductor p-n junction lasers of Group TIT-Group V compounds and their alloys have been reported in the past several years. Laser action at visible wavelengths in GaAsl-x,Px was first reported by Holonyak and Bevacqua. GaAs, a direct transition semiconductor which lases, and Gap, an indirect transition semiconductor which does not lase, form a continuous series of solid solutions.2 Laser junctions can be fabricated in GaAsl-xPx crystals with phosphorus compositions up to about 40 mol pct. In addition to the production of coherent radiation in these crystals, the efficient recombination radiation of p-n junctions in this material has equally important potential in the development of low-power semiconductor lamps. To achieve a high conversion efficiency of electrical to optical energy in p-n junctions in this material, the relation of physical properties of the crystal to luminescence efficiency must be better understood. Although the electrical, optical, and device properties of GaAsl -xPx junction lasers are understandably of considerable interest, the work to date indicates that the more serious problems are the chemical and metallurgical difficulties encountered in the growth of this material.3 In addition to the problems of chemical purity, crystal imperfections, such as dislocations and stacking faults, can be expected to affect both the efficiency of the radiative recombination process and the perfection of the p-n junction.3 The last requirement, i.c., that of the perfection of the p-n junction, is a particularly troublesome one in the fabrication of laser diodes. To obtain good laser diodes, the p-n junction must be flat, which permits the radiation to be reflected from the resonant cavity boundaries. Junction planarity is extremely sensitive to the crystal perfection of the semiconductor material. Also, it is known that at high dislocation densities (-105 per sq cm) it has not been possible to build laser junctions in GaAsl-xPx . Few studies have been reported on the crystal defect structure of GaAsl-,P,. The first serious study seems to be that of Wolfe, Nuese, and Holonyak,3 who examined the dislocation structure of monocrystalline bulk (nonepitaxial) material grown by halogen vapor transport. In this paper are reported some observations on the dislocation and stacking-fault structure of GaAsl_,P, crystals grown by a vapor transport process on substrates of GaAs. EXPERIMENTAL Crystal Growth. The GaAsl-xPx crystals were grown in an open-tube flow system, using two sets of reagents. GaAs, Pr(red), and HC1 were employed in one method. The transport reaction is =950JC GaAs+HC1 = GaCl +1/4As4 +1/2H2 and the deposition reaction is 2GaAs1-xPx +GaCl3 Composition control is obtained by the flow rate of the HC1 and the vapor pressure of the P4, which is maintained in a separately controlled furnace. The second method has been described by Ruehr-wein4 and utilizes gallium, AsH3, PH3, and HC1. The same transport and deposition reactions as above are involved. Composition control is obtained solely by the flow rates of the three gases involved. All of the crystals were grown on chemically polished GaAs substrates oriented on the (100) plane. The thicknesses of the epitaxial layers were typically 100 to 300p. Revealing of Dislocations. Dislocations were re-vealed on both the( 111 ) and { l l l }b faces by chemical etching. The outstanding developments of the year in southwestern Pennsylvania were the establishment of the Summit Fayette County gas pool and the gas pool in Nicholson township, Fayette County, and Monongahela township, Greene County, as major producing areas, and the indication of four new shallow gas pools. Curtailment of drilling for shallow gas is expected to follow order M68 of the Office of Production Management. Gas completions were approximately 70 per cent higher, oil completions nearly 25 per cent lower, dry holes were unchanged and drilling wells as of Dec. 31, 1941, nearly loo per cent higher than last year. Shallow Development Oil.—Outside Butler County, only 11 producers were drilled, with a total initial of 221 bbl. The best of these was in a portion of Gilmore township, Greene County, which ordinarily produces gas. This well flowed 77 bbl. in 11 hr., along with about one million cubic feet of gas from the Fourth (U.Dev.) sand. Washington County had a 10.20 and a 25-bbl. well in Morris township and a 20-bbl. well in South Franklin township. These were all in the Fifth Sand. The price of oil to Jan. 27 was $1.80 per barrel, when a 15¢ increase was made. This was followed by a raise of 20¢ on Apr. 23, 15¢ on May 21, 20¢ on June 18 and 25¢ on Aug. 14. The last increase was canceled on Aug. 23 by the Office of Price Administration, which pegged southwestern Pennsylvania crude at $2.40 per barrel. Gas.—An almost doubled initial production of natural gas is the result of the large increase in number of wells drilled. The outstanding discovery of the year was in the vicinity of Armbrust, Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, where a well drilled to what at first was considered the Bayard sand, but what is now known to be the Fifth (U.Dev.) sand, at 2100 ft. found nearly 5 million cu. ft. of gas. Since this completion 14 wells have been finished, only one of which was dry, giving a combined total open flow of approximately 15 million cu. ft. The sand is 35 to 40 ft. thick and the saturation extends through most of that thickness. Rock pressure, which is 1040 lb. per sq. in., is abnormally high. An area of only about one square mile has been proven but some of the 24 new wells drilling as of Dec. 31 will no doubt extend it considerably. This development has taken place in an area heretofore considered to have had little prospect. There were three good wells in other parts of Westmoreland County. One well in Franklin township, which had 12 million cu. ft, of gas in the Fifth sand, was entirely surrounded by dry holes but is still pro- . ducing at a high rate. In Bell township a 1.6 million cu. ft. well was found in the Speechley (U.Dev.) sand and in Washington township the same sand produced 2.7 million cu. ft. with shut-in pressure of 970 Ib. at 2820 ft. This well is offset by two dry holes and one well with a capacity of only 10 M cubic feet.

Careful estimates indicate that during 1942 new discoveries and extensions in West Central Texas added oil reserves slightly in excess of the eight million barrels produced. Drilling activity fell 40 per cent below 1941 and 82 per cent below the normal drilling activity of the late 1920&apos;s. Total production for the district continued its downward trend, now being less than % of the 42.7 million barrels peak in 1921. Rapid revival of activity is not probable under existing conditions, as costs of discovery, development and operations on the average probably now exceed current market price for the oil, the latter having remained constant since the spring of I941. Costs have advanced materially since the third quarter of 1941, when reports to the Tariff Commission indicated a margin of profit of 13.3 per barrel. Physical as well as economic conditions are holding back the amount of drilling in this district. The lenticular sands are not suited to 40-acre spacing regulations. There is no surplus of experienced oil-field labor. To reduce costs, much second-hand material is used for all except the deeper wells.. Price controls have retarded movement of used equipment by prescribing maximum prices that arc too low for the better grade materizl, thus making , owners reluctant to sell. On the other hand, buyers are unwilling to pay ceiling prices asked by sellers for poor material. Seventeen new oil fields and five new gas fields were found during 1942. Extensions and deeper &apos;drilling brought favorable results in eight older fields. The most significant new developments appear to have been in Coleman, Jones, Shackelford and Taylor Counties. A 5800-ft. completion in Wise County brought this county into the producing column for the first time. None of these new discoveries can he rated above one million barrel reserve on the basis of present development. Probably the most important development was discovery of a deeper pay (Gunsight lime) in the Wimberly field of Jones County, which shows promise of producing over an area of about 1000 acres. Jones and Shackelford Counties still lead the district in total annual production. Discovery of the Reddin pool, north central Taylor County, is credited to geochemical methods, making one success out of five or more wildcats based on such methods. Geophysical surveying increased decidedly during 1942 and returns from these studies are expected during coming years. Most of the wildcatting in the district is still based on surface and subsurface geological structural mapping, study of log data as to distribution of prospective producing reservoirs, and drilling in proximity to previous showings of oil and gas. Geological debate continues as to the proper correlation of the 100 to 300 ft. of gray lime that has produced more than 100 million barrels in the Parks, Brecken-ridge, Curry, Eliasville, Ibex, Pioneer and other important fields of this district. Fossils indicate that this limestone is younger than the Atoka beds of Oklahoma. On a structural basis most geologists include this formation with the Bend but a number of paleontologists believe it is more properly classified with the Strawn.
