At the present time most artillery cartridge cases are used only a single time. Since the process of reshaping a fired cartridge case so that it may be used again is much simpler and cheaper than the original manufacture of the case, it is clear that important savings could be effected if such re-formed cases were used in place of new cases. Extensive use of reconditioned cases has been hindered in the past, however, by the deterioration of the brass which may occur in the period of time between the first firing and the reconditioning of the cartridge cases. This deterioration sometimes results in a dangerously high incidence of firing splits in groups of reconditioned cartridge cases. It appears that the mechanism of the deterioration is the season cracking of the brass, for season cracks, of varying degrees of severity, may frequently be found in the cartridge cases after their return from the field. There are, of course, severe practical limitations to the extent to which fired cartridge cases can be protected from corrosion under battle conditions, particularly since the powder residue in the case is itself corrosive. The present paper describes a rapid method of testing the sidewalls of artillery cartridge cases for the presence of season cracks. This method has been developed specifically for use in connection with the reconditioning of fired cases, and makes it possible to carry out 100 per cent inspection. Fort the past five years, an investigation of the endurance properties of metals has been in progress at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md. As a result of the investigations at this Station1-5 and other laboratories6-11 "endurance limits" of practically all kinds of carbon and alloy steels have been determined and have been correlated with other physical properties, especially with tensile strength. About a year and a half ago, the investigation at the Naval Experiment Station was shifted to non-ferrous metals. As a result, several papers discussing the endurance properties of numerous non-ferrous metals and alloys, especially the alloys of nickel and of copper12-16 have been published. In these papers, stress-cycle graphs illustrate. the endurance properties of each individual metal and alloy, and other graphs illustrate the effect of cold working, heat treatment, and chemical composition on endurance and other physical properties. Endurance tests of non-ferrous metals were made by the machines used in the endurance tests of ferrous metals. 1-4 The specimen for the rotating-cantilever tests, which has been described, 1,2,13 has a conical surface, with taper so adjusted that the stress is nearly uniform over a length of about 1 ½ in. Alternating torsion tests were made with the machine of the inertia types17 and usually by an accelerated-fatigue method.12 As the rotating-cantilever endurance limits of metals are about twice the alternating-torsion endurance limits, the former values are more generally useful in correlating the endurance properties of nonferrous metals. In several recent papers by the writer13-16 correlation of the endurance properties of a number of non-ferrous metals has been discussed.

The problem of eliminating the hazards of hoisting in mines has been with us since the industry passed its earliest stages, when coal and ore could be won from surface working and tunnels. At first, safety devices were introduced as means of decreasing the amount of labor necessary to produce the mineral, or to increase the amount that could be obtained from a certain opening. For example, crude ladders replaced winding footpaths or steps cut into the walls of the pit or shaft, decreasing the distance it was necessary to carry the product to the surface and eliminating, to some extent, the hazard introduced by the precarious footing afforded by such paths and steps. Latcr, instead of being carried from the pit on the backs of men, the product was hoisted in buckets or baskets on a rope passing over a pulley or around a windlass. Thus the capacity of the pit was considerably increased, and the hazard due to making many trips up and down the shaft was eliminated. From such beginnings accident prevention in mine hoisting advanced with the importance of the industry, until at present hoisting compares favorably with other branches of the mining industry with reference to safe practices. As in the other branches, this progress has been accomplished along two general lines—by legislation, rules, and education, and by the installation of safety devices. Though due credit must be given the former, it is not so satisfactory as the latter. Legislation, to be effective, requires a policing and inspection system to guarantee enforcement, such as we cannot hope to inaugurate. Rules may be satisfactory so long as the employer controls the labor market, and dismissal or some other form of discipline is an effective means of insuring obedience to the rules; but where labor demand is in excess of the supply, or where labor organizations are in control, such measures are not effective. An educational campaign will draw attention to hazards and may awaken a desire to avoid accidents by exercising the proper care. It is necessary, therefore, to place our reliance mainly on mechanical devices to prevent accidents, and to depend as little as possible on laws,

As EARLY As 1824, Haidinger1 described crystals of native copper that were, according to Dana,2 "probably twinned parallel to the octahedral plane and normal to this axis." In 1837, Rose3 very clearly demonstrated that native copper crystals were commonly twinned on the octahedral plane. Lasaulx,4 in 1882, described polysynthetic octahedral twins and stated that enclosed twinning lamellae were observed. Even on crystals formed artificially by. electrolysis, twinning was observed as early as 1886, by Brown.5 Many other descriptions of twinning in native copper and in gold and silver are to be found in the literature, and in every case with which we are acquainted the twinning is conformable to the spinel law; i. e., the octahedral plane is both twinning and composition plane. Metallurgists have long been familiar with the straight-sided bars or bands that commonly occur within the irregularly outlined grains of metallic crystalline aggregates. They are certainly found in nearly all metals of the face-centered cubic type after cold working and annealing. If a specimen showing these bands is rotated, keeping the angle of incidence of the illuminating beam constant, they usually exchange color contrast periodically with their respective matrix crystals. Also slip lines, when produced in these specimens, nearly always show a change in direction upon passing through the bands, giving rise to the "stairway" effect often illustrated in metallurgical textbooks. Apparently the only quantitative observations on bands of this sort were made by Osmond and Cartaud6 on austenitic steel. They selected,

(member of the committee)- (communication to the Secretary*).-In the discussion of papers presented at the New York meeting of the Institute in February, 1915, and at the Arizona meeting of September, 1916, I referred to the activities of the Bureau of Safety of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., and I am now submitting a few thoughts by members of the staff of that Bureau. TORGUS H. OAAS, Safety Engineer, Butte, Mont.-The report of the Committee on Safety and Sanitation has described different organizations and methods of promoting safety work. The effectiveness of these methods would aid the beginner in his campaign for safety in choosing the kind of organization and methods best adapted for his field. This can he obtained only by a discussion by those who have long promoted this kind of work, and have met with successful results. As the field is new, the different organizations promoting safety work have not established a common basis of rating for their fatal, serious and slight accidents, so that it is now difficult to get a comparative basis from which to judge the merits of the different systems. C. W. GOODALE.-The U. S. Bureau of Mines adopted, at the beginning, as a basis for its yearly summaries, the number of accidents. per 1,000 men employed, and it is now (quoting from its report for 1915, Technical Paper 168) making the following "classification of injuries:" "Many of the States now have. compensation laws, and in order to conform with their classifications, the bureau's classification of serious and slight injuries for 1915 is on a 14-day (2-week) basis instead of 20 days, as in previous years. Permissible Limits: The question of permissible dust limits has been considered by medical commit-ties and various national conferences. Dr. Lanza, of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Dr. Le-roy U. A statement included in reports of some of these committees is as follows: Concentrations to which the dust must be induced in order to be safe have not been absolutely determined. There is evidence that a concentration of more than five million particles per cubic foot of a highly siliceous dust is dangerous. Therefore, it may be stated that it is desirable to avoid counts of more than five million particles of dust containing free silica to a high percent in working places. INTERESTING results were recently obtained in geophysical prospecting at the Questa mine of the Molybdenum Corpn. of America in New Mexico. This paper describes that survey, which was carried out during October and November, 1927, by the Swedish American Prospecting Corpn. It is hoped that the paper will make it possible for the mining man to form an opinion of the applicability of geophysical prospecting under difficult conditions, showing, as it does, the results when prospecting for small small orebodies with comparatively poor conductivity, in a region of rough topography. Some principles underlying electromagnetic prospecting not known to be published previously will also be given in an elementary way, with special attention to the general structure of the electromagnetic field. GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS AT QUESTA The property is situated in the Taos range of the Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico. About this region, L. C. Graton says:1 The main range is made up of pre-Cambrian granites, gneisses and schists but in the vicinity of Red River igneous rocks of later age are present almost to the exclusion of the older series. These younger rocks are divisible into two groups. The older of the two, probably pre-Tertiary age, is represented by large intrusive masses of monzonite porphyry, usually containing considerable quartz. The more recent group comprises intrusive' and probably effusive dark-colored andesites and coarse andesitic breccias, some of which contain fragments of the monzonite; there are also flows of rhyolite and beds of rhyolite breccia. The evidence regarding the relative age of the andesite and the rhyolite is not wholly satisfactory, but there is little doubt that the andesite is the older. The ore deposits, although occurring more commonly in the monzonite porphyry than in the rhyolite, nevertheless are believed to be genetically related to the rhyolite. They certainly cut the rhyolite or andesite in places, and hence fall in the late Tertiary.

CERTAIN features of the response of copper and brass to deformation and recrystallization remain obscure. The textures obtained on rolled sheet are listed by Schmid and Boas1 as: No adequate explanation has been advanced for the presence of the secondary deformation texture of copper and its absence in brass or for the origin of the cubic recrystallization texture of copper.2 A recent publication3 attempted to rationalize the above empirically described annealing texture of brass on the basis of retention of the (110) [112] rolling orientation plus twinning about the central octahedral poles of the usual secondary (110) [115] orientation. The difference in the textures of annealed copper as compared to 70-30 brass is also shown by the difference in the position of ears for drawn copper, at o° and 90°, as compared with drawn brasses, at 45°, for all compositions between 90-10 and 70-30.4 Data on individual crystals are as yet too few to permit of an analysis of these textures comparable to that of mild steel as made by Barrett and Levenson.5 EXPERITMENTAL METHODS The materials studied included copper specimens cut from the central, equiaxed crystal portion of a tough-pitch wirebar; brass made from this copper and high-purity (99.99 per cent) zinc including alloys of 7 per. cent, 15 per cent, 24 per cent, 29 per cent and 36 per cent Zn and large single crystals of 70-30 brass. Sections ¼ in. thick of the cast polycrystalline copper and brasses were reduced 40 per cent by rolling, recrystallized to a common grain size of 0.045 mm. and then rolled directly to foil 0.002 in. thick. Hardness readings employing both the Vickers and Rockwell machines were taken at intervals during the reduction. For comparison, similar specimens were cross-rolled-i.e., turned through 90 for each pass-and comparable hardness data were secured. Finally sections from the single crystals of brass were cut to obtain the following initial orientations; these sections were rolled, hardness data secured and a complete micrographic record of structural changes obtained:

THE purposes of this paper are to describe the use of adjustable cut and draw tools as a control test of drawing properties and to point out that no other well-known test or combination of tests determines this quality in zinc and zinc alloys. Rolled zinc has been used for making drawn articles, particularly battery cans, for many years. The development of rolling treatments satisfactory for, these purposes followed the usual course of trial and error experimentation depending upon cooperation with customers to determine what type of material was suitable. A quick test of drawing quality was highly desirable, of course. Scleroscope hardness and temper,1 having no apparent relation to drawing quality, were used simply to check the duplication of rolling treatment and grade of metal. The dynamic ductility1 test, on the other hand, was believed to be so like the drawing operation as to provide a reliable index and came to be taken as the criterion of good drawing properties. Faith in this test was strengthened by the fact that metal having the highest ductility was more satisfactory for operations, such as the manufacture of battery cups, that required several redraws. No distinction was made at that time in specifying metal as to whether it was to be subjected to simple cut and draw, redrawing or forming operations. It developed, however, that in some grades of metal the highest ductility did not coincide with the most satisfactory quality when the material was used for a single draw.

Face ventilation is generally the most critical area in the coal mine ventilation system. Various studies have repeatedly shown that good ventilation is by far the most effective and least costly method of controlling dust and gas problems created during face operations. The Bureau of Mines has recently developed and assisted in the development of several new concepts in face ventilation systems, and in methods to accurately evaluate these systems underground. A new type of scrubber and ventilation system design built into the auger support frame of a continu- ous miner was developed. The objective was to improve face ventilation and reduce respirable dust concentrations. With this arrangement, one scrubber is mounted into each side of the boom. Laboratory and underground tests of various scrubber discharge arrangements showed good to excellent dust and methane control. Combined face ventilation systems, using both blowing and exhaust curtain, potentially offer dust and gas control and deeper cutting. Bureau tests at a mine using a combined face ventilation system and remote- control-operated continuous miners showed excellent dust and methane control. The advancement of line curtain systems beyond permanent supports without exposing workmen to roof fall hazards can be accomplished only with specially designed extendable devices. Numerous concepts for line curtain extension have been developed and tested. For the past several years, the Bureau has been testing various types of extensible face ventilation systems. These extensible systems can generally be classified as floor-, roof-, machine-, and rib-mounted systems. In the past 6 years, approximately 40 systems have been evaluated for feasibility. From these, several have been selected as practical or innovative and are presented herein. A technique developed by the Bureau to accurately and safely evaluate the effectiveness of face ventilation is also presented.

The year 1936 was a prosperous one for the oil industry in California. Increases in crude prices were posted in February and March. Re-establishment of voluntary curtailment in February was a factor in holding production at an efficient level throughout the year. Reduction of storage was effected through adherence to curtailment measures, aided by greater demand and smaller average well completions. During the first six years of voluntary curtailment, allotments were increased during the summer season and reduced during the winter season. This year, good results were obtained through a revised system of allocation, by which the California monthly quota was held constant at approximately 540,000 bbl. per day. After a 7-month period of practically unrestricted production (ending in January 1936), numerous operators found that curtailment was still necessary, as California and export market,s were not yet capable of absorbing the state's potential production, which was estimated to be in the neighborhood of 850,000 bbl. per day. Therefore, in February California operators again placed themselves under voluntary curtailment; with the result that state production dropped from around 700,000 bbl. per day in January to a low of 565,000 bbl. per day in April, and increased gradually to around 585,000 bbl. per day for December. Drilling activity during the year increased about 10 per cent over that of the preceding year, although the resultant production per well decreased. Field Discoveries As a result of a very active wildcatting campaign in California, aided by better interpretation of geophysical data, five new oil fields and two new gas fields were discovered. AT Dominion Steel & Coal Corp. it has long been recognized that continued mechanization of mine operations is necessary in the Pictou, Cumberland, and Sidney coal fields of Nova Scotia. The varied physical conditions in these fields call for special consideration of individual cases before planning is finalized. Because standard equipment cannot be procured which would operate successfully, many experiments have been necessary over the years to keep pace with the progress made in other countries. There are two mines, producing 2000 tpd, located in the Pictou coal field. The field is badly distorted and crossed by many faults. Seams are highly inclined and irregular and vary in thickness from 5 to 40 ft. Entries are difficult to maintain because of squeezing of the coal ribs and movement of the roof and pavement.

In the short time allotted to me* I can only hope to present to you a brief sketch of the main geological features of the country which you are about to visit. My remarks must, of necessity, be more or less incomplete, as my desire is not so much to elucidate any special problem connected with the many interesting geological questions to be found here, as rather to offer such a general view of the region as will enable you, during your five days' trip through the Park, to understand clearly something of its physical geography and geology. The Yellowstone Park is situated in the extreme northwestern portion of the Territory of Wyoming. Its boundaries, as determined by the original Act of Congress setting apart the Park, are very ill-defined. At the time of the enactment of the law establishing this national reservation, the region had been but little explored, and its relation to the physical features of the adjacent country was but little understood. Since that time, surveys have shown that only a narrow strip, about two miles in width, was situated in the Territory of Montana, but it was also found that a still narrower strip extended westward into the Territory of Idaho. The question of properly establishing the boundaries, -based upon our present knowledge of the country, is now before Congress, and an Act has already passed the Senate, proposing to make the northern boundary coincide with the boundary between Wyoming and Montana, and the western boundary coincide with the Wyoming and Idaho line. The Act under consideration extends the southern boundary of the Park to the 44th parallel of latitude, carrying the area of the reservation southward nine and one-half miles. The eastern boundary is made to coincide with the meridian of 109' 30') adding a strip of country about twenty-four and one-half miles in width along the entire eastern side of the Park.

The figures herein presented show that during the year 1938 drilling in the Texas Gulf Coast continued at a slightly lower rate than during 1937. In 1938 there were 21 new oil fields added to the Texas Gulf Coast; also numerous extensions and new sands in old fields. This report for 1938 cannot be compared with the report for 1937 in Volume 127 of the Transactions, because the area covered by this report is less than that covered last year. The cross-hatched area on Fig. 1 shows the limits of this report. Of the new fields, Cordele, in Jackson County, Eureka Heights and Fairbanks, in Harris County, Francitas, in Jackson County, LaRosa, in Refugio County, and League City, in Galveston County, have the greatest promise of prolific production. The 1938 production for the Gulf Coast area was 92,530,467 bbl. as compared to 94,019,355 bbl. for the same area in 1937. This shows a decrease of 1,488,888 bbl. during 1938, regardless of the increase due to the 21 new oil fields. This decrease was caused mainly by the Saturday and Sunday shutdowns (68 days during 1938) and by cut in allowables. The 68 shut-down days amount to approximately 18.6 per cent of the 365 days possible for production. The decrease in the 1938 production amounted to approximately 1.58 per cent. Therefore there was actually a potential increase in the year's production. During the past year, 1637 wells were completed as oil wells, 68 as gas wells and approximately 461 dry holes, as compared to 1672 oil wells, 83 gas wells and 448 dry holes in 1937 on the Texas Gulf Coast. Total wells drilled were 2166 in 1938 and 2203 in 1937. Condensate. sands in old fields and new fields are continuing to increase in importance from the standpoint of retrograde condensation and pressure maintenance. It has long been recognized that it would be highly desirable to be able to predict the temperatures at various points in a burning fuel bed and their variations with changes of the properties of the fuel and the rate of air supply. Experimenta1 investigations of fuel-bed temperature1-4 have not been lacking, but the absence of any theoretical background has made it impossible to use the results of these tests as a basis for prediction, except in a very general may. A mathematical analysis", based on a somewhat simplified theory of the distribution of lieat in a fuel bed, lias recently been completed by the author. Even though numerical values of some of the coefficients are not known, the calculations result in some conclusions of general significance. Thus, for example, it appears that when the temperatures throughout the fuel bed can be calculated, the rate at which ignition of the fuel by underfeed action can be maintained can also be calcu1ated. The uncertainty concerning the values of the coefficients referred to above is serious limitation on the use of that method. The following paper presents a discussion of these coefficients and includes estimates of their values based on the data now available. A brief description of the theory on which the analysis is based, and some results of the calculations showing their degree of agreement with experimental results, are presented by way of introduction to the discussion of the coefficients. Theory and Comparison with Experiment The theoretical analysis is similar to that used in the calculation of the stationary temperatures in a conducting solid in the classical theory of heat concluction. The fuel bed is pictured as a uniform, continuous, porous solid through the interstices of which air can be blown and ill which combustion can take place. The ease and value of the application of spectrum analysis to industrial chemistry appears to be appreciated in few of the large works laboratories of this country. For 8 years, this analysis has been of great value to the authors in both analytical and metallurgical work. To the analyst the complete qualitative analysis of an unknown alloy, revealed by a spectrogram, is a sure basis for the planning of the most direct and rapid method of attack. As the determination of each element proceeds, the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. The spectrograph proves invaluable in the recognition of impurities, the separation of which would entail a lengthy and difficult procedure, or when the weight of an unknown is less than is necessary to complete the desired determinations. A few hundredths of a gram will usually suffice for spectrographic analysis. In the separation of the rarer elements, the spectrograph will show, with precision, the point where each step has been successful. In zinc of certain classes, indium, gallium, and germanium have been isolated in this way; the presence of antimony in lake coppers has been proved; and bismuth has been detected in zinc and in alloys where the presence of a few thousandths of a per cent. would be harmful. An antimony precipitate in a delicate determination may contain a considerable proportion of tin or arsenic, both of which will be revealed. The spectrograph is consequently important to the metallurgist as well as to the analyst. Impurities in raw material are often a source of annoyance, especially when their detection involves delay and costly analytical work. Whethcr low conductivity in copper is due to arsenic, nickel, or something else may be cluickly found out. Residual traces of boron, magnesium, manganese, silicon, vanadium, and other deoxidizing agents are easily identified where wet analysis may fail to reveal their presence, even after days of effort. Recently some experimental work was conducted by the author in connection with the direct leaching of certain zinc ores with sulfuric acid with the object of subsequently recovering the zinc by electrolysis. The ores contained relatively large quantities of soluble silica, making it necessary to evolve special methods for handling the silicate solutions resulting from a leach of the ore, and also for the final removal of the silica before electrolysis. The problem was complicated by the presence of vanadium in the ore, the commercial recovery of which was very desirable. This paper, however, deals only with the silica phase of the problem. The zinc in the ore occurs in the form of a silicate (hemimorphite) and, to a very small extent, as the phosphate (hopeite) and carbonate (calamine); the vanadium is found as descloizite and vanadinite but mainly as descloizite. The experimental work was done in a plant producing 50 lb. of zinc = daily, in which the complete cycle of operations, including the final electrodeposition of the zinc, was performed continuously for one year. Some of the conclusions given here are the result of the operations in -this plant; the others are from laboratory tests inaugurated both as a guide to the plant operations and, in certain cases especially, to determine the limits in question. The practice in the 50-lb. zinc plant was to direct leach the ore crushed to pass 40 mesh, with spent electrolyte from the cells containing approximately 3 per cent. zinc and 10 per cent. free acid. This resulted in an acid leach solution and an ore residue. The acid leach solution was ' subjected to a special treatment for subsequent removal of vanadium; then the silica and vanadium in solution were precipitated together and removed as a "silica residue" by pressing through an ordinary plate and frame press. In developing a consistent picture of the thermal expansion of the commercial chromium steels, which cover a range of carbon contents, it is desirable to know the expansion in the limiting case of the binary, carbon-free, iron-chromium alloys. We have, therefore, determined the thermal expansion of a series of five special alloys, ranging in chromium content from 3 to 10.5 per cent, with not more than 0.03 per cent carbon, over a temperature range extending beyond the transformation region; this low carbon content enables us to draw reasonably reliable conclusions as to the behavior of the carbon-free system. Moreover, the measurements serve to determine the beginning and the end of the alpha-gamma transformation; and they emphasize once more the fact that a transformation temperature determined by any method in which the specimen is cooled at an appreciable rate is apt to be seriously in error, particularly if the metal contains a transformation-retarding element such as chromium or managanese. The lag, or undercooling, observed at the ? — a transformation is explained in terms of the influence of temperature on transformation velocity; the rather unusual shape of the ? loop is attributed to a change with temperature and with composition of the distribution of chromium between the alpha-iron and gamma-iron solid solutions. The exact composition of the alloys, which were obtained through the courtesy of Dr. W. Rohn, of the Heraeus Vakuumschmelze A-G., is given in Table 1. Determinations of the linear thermal expansion and of transformation temperature were carried out in the vacuum dila-tometer previously described,' using a rate of heating and of cooling of 3.0" to 3.5" per minute unless otherwise stated. A number of detailed investigations of the physical changes accompanying age-hardening have raised the question as to the possibility of some phenomenon preceding the actual process of precipitation. There is considerable evidence to indicate that in the first stages of the aging process there is a pronounced distortion of the crystal lattice. This is particularly marked in duralumin. It would be of considerable theoretical interest to know the nature of this distortion as compared with that produced in other ways and to find out whether, in supersaturated alloys, it is a necessary antecedent to the formation of a second phase by precipitation. It was believed that a study of the age-hardening char-acteristics of a normally aged alloy compared with one that had been mechanically distorted might supply some useful information on these points. In addition, information would be obtained regarding the effect of a mechanical distortion on any subsequent stage in the aging process. Duralumin was chosen as the material for this investigation because the various aspects of its aging behavior can be shown in detail by suitable variations of the aging temperature. Also, probably more work has been done on this class of alloys than on any other. In spite of the many published results, it was felt that the experiments would be significant only if all of the work were done on samples from the same source and if they were examined under identical experimental conditions. Previous Work The many studies of the mechanism of aging in duralumin have been more or less crystallized by a series of papers by Fink and Smith1~2~3 and a recent paper by Cohen.~ The former authors believe that a simple precipitation theory is adequate to account for the various phenomena
