Recent experimental work has demonstrated (1)2 that ammonia and oxides of nitrogen are formed during the aging of smokeless powder. This is significant in connection with the problem of "season cracking," or stress corrosion of brass cartridge cases in view of other work(1) indicating that stressed and "stress- relieved" cases stored with small quantities of added ammonium nitrate crack on firing. The deterioration of stressed brass by ammonia has been known for some time(z) and it appears therefore that stress- corrosion cracking of brass cartridge cases is intimately associated with the so-called "powder volatiles," ammonia and oxides of nitrogen, both of which are decomposition products of smokeless powder. Working on the hypothesis that any barrier which prevents the powder volatiles from reaching the brass surface will reduce the incidence of stress-corrosion cracking, it was considered desirable to investigate the use of organic resin films to accomplish this purpose. The possibility of formation of ammonia within the nitrocellulose powder charge and by reduction of nitrogen oxides on the surface of the brass case requires that the barrier film be resistant both to ammonia and oxides of nitrogen. Titanium with up to 7.5 pct Al forms single-phase a alloys that are work hardening, not heat treatable, and ductile as welded. The high aluminum Y phase alloys are not usefully ductile, despite their low hardness, but they have excellent oxidation resistance and hot hardness. LITTLE has been published on the effect of aluminum on the mechanical properties of titanium, despite the fact that two of the first four commercial alloys released by titanium alloy producers contained aluminum as an important alloying ingredient. These were both a-ß type alloys, one containing 4 pct A1 and 4 pct Mn and the other containing 3 pct A1 and 5 pct Cr. However, neither of these alloys reflects the true alloying nature of aluminum, since each contains important amounts of the ß-stabilizing addition, manganese or chromium. In a previous publication on the constitution of Ti-A1 alloys,' the authors showed that aluminum had a high solubility in a titanium and was strongly a stabilizing in nature. About 25 wt pct A1 is soluble in a titanium at room temperature. With as little as 5 pct added aluminum, the a transus temperature is increased from 882" to 970°C, and the correspond- ing ß transus to 995°C. The first intermediate phase in the Ti-A1 system is the ordered face-centered tetragonal TiAl phase, which extends from 34 to 46 wt pct Al. The present paper presents hardness data over the entire titanium-rich region of the system, through the TiAl phase, and mechanical property data on the alloy range capable of being fabricated. Methods of Investigation The materials used and general preparation of alloys, as well as experimental techniques used in the investigation of Ti-A1 alloys, have been adequately described.' Briefly, the preparation consisted of arc-melting the desired amount of high purity aluminum (99.99 pct purity) and iodide titanium (maximum hardness 100 Vickers, as deposited) together on a water-cooled copper hearth under a partial pressure of argon. The resulting button ingot was of such form that it could be fabricated without further treatment. All work was done using ingots weighing 10 to 15 g, which were hot-rolled to strip form whenever possible. Tensile samples were 3.25 in. long, 0.5 in. wide, and 0.040 in. thick, with a reduced section 1.25 in. long by 0.250 in. wide. The gage length used was 1 in. Electrical strain gages mounted on the

A NUMBER of proposals have been made for the hydrometallurgical recovery of copper from flotation concentrates, but as yet no process has been developed that has demonstrated an ability to compete with the present smelting methods under ordinary conditions. The treat-ment of copper concentrates by hydrometallurgical methods is in general similar to that used in the present electrolytic zinc process and involves roasting, leaching with H2S04 solution, separation of solutions, control of impurities and electrodeposition. While many of these steps are simpler and more readily carried out for copper than for zinc, a number of inherent difficulties have prevented the general adoption of the process. To compete with smelting, the following problems must still be con-fronted, although many solutions for their have been proposed: (1) con-duction of the roast in such a way that leaching will give an extraction of copper comparable to that obtained by smelting; (2) regulation of the ferric iron content of the solutions during electrolysis; (3) disposal of the excess acid regenerated from the sulphates formed in roasting; (4) eco-nomical recovery of the precious metals from the leach residues. The roasting problem is largely one of preventing the formation of copper ferrites, CuO.Fe2O, and Cu20.Fe2O3, which are quite insoluble in dilute sulphuric acid. These ferrites are apparently formed' to a small extent even at low temperatures and above 650° C. their formation is rapid1. While it is possible to carry out laboratory roasts in such a way that less than 5 per cent of the total copper is present in the insoluble ferrite form, a closer temperature control is required than can readily be obtained in industrial furnaces. The flash" roasting effects and consequent high temperatures that occur as the calcine falls from hearth to hearth in the ordinary multiple-hearth roaster are probably largely responsible for the inevitable formation of some ferrites. The result is that in a commercial plant the extraction of copper would not average more than 90 per cent in a single 10 per cent H2SO4 leach. This is

Repeated failures in attempts to work gold-bearing gravels by means of suction-dredges have created the impression that this method is impracticable. The suction-dredges have failed from three special causes: excessive wear and frequent breakage of pump-shell, runners and liners; inability to dredge compact gravel which would not readily move towards the intake; and, most important of all, closing of the suction-pipe by stones too large to enter it. In my opinion, all three causes of trouble may be remedied: the first, by making stronger the parts most liable to wear and breakage; the second, by means for loosening the gravel at the intake; and the third, by sufficiently increasing the diameter of the suction-pipe. In suction gold-dredges, this diameter has not usually exceeded 10 or 12 in.; whereas there are few profitable gold-fields which call be considered dredge-able, in which stones more than 12 in. in diameter are not frequently encountered. II. An Effective Suction-Dredge. In harbor-operations, much larger stones are handled by suction-dredges. The large dredge of the Henry Steers Contracting Co. worked for nearly four years at League Island, Philadelphia, where it sucked up, passed through the pump, and forced through 3,700 ft. of discharge-pipe, gravel containing boulders up to 200 lb. in weight. This was done with no bad breaks and few shut-downs. The cutter and liners were the only parts liable to damage, and these were easily replaced with brief interruption of work. After 216 years, the end of operations at the Corn- wall mine can be foreseen within the next two decades. The story starts in 1732 when three sons of Wiliam Penn-John, Thomas, and Richard-deeded 9669 acres in the Province of Pennsylvania to a Joseph Turner, who assigned it to William Allen. In 1734 Peter Grubb, who had prospected for iron in the area, paid Allen £ 135 for 300 acres of this tract in what is now Lebanon County. In 1737 he was granted a warrant for 142.5 additional acres, which included three hills of outcropping magnetite described as "rich and abundant, forty feet deep, commencing two feet under the earth's surface." This seemingly inexhaustible reserve was to become one of the most valuable deposits in the U. S. before the ore-rich Lake Superior region was developed.

The subject of fuel-briquetting has attracted much attention on the part of engineers. and investors for the past 15 or 20 years, and especially in recent years, during which a number of plants have been built, with more or less commercial and technical success. Our technical literature contains numerous descriptions of certain processes, and discussions of the industry in general. For a history of the development of the art in the United States, and for descriptions of many of the processes which have been tried, reference may be made to the files of our Transactions, and, for more recent information, to a paper by C. T. Malcolmson, read before the First Annual Convention of the International Railway Fuel Association in June, 1909. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the briquette-plant of the Solvay Process Co. and the Semet-Solvay Co. at Detroit, Mich., which, after a period of long and costly evolution, is now operating satisfactorily on a commercial basis. I believe that it will be of interest to some of our members to have the details of operation, power-consumption, labor, etc., as worked out on a practical and commercial scale in a going operation.

CHUQUICAMATA, as the Chile Copper Company's mine is known, has the largest developed deposit of copper ore in the world. Indeed, it is improbable that its equal will ever be found. The Union Miniére du Haut Katanga, operating in the Belgian Congo, may some day surpass Chuquicamata in the total amount of copper produced; or one of the companies developing the rich copper region of Northern Rhodesia may ultimately outdo it. But in each instance, the ore will come from a group of mines separated by 80 miles or more; whereas the deposit at Chuquicamata is one vast integral mass containing as a minimum probably 1,000,000,000 tons of ore, averaging better than 8.5 per cent copper, and as a maximum-well, most any reasonable figure might err on the low side. Utah Copper approaches Chuquicamata more nearly than any other in tonnage of exploitable ore; but Utah's ore is less than half as rich. The figure for the aggregate copper content of the reasonably assured ore at Chuquicamata is breath-taking at 50,000,000,000 pounds. Other distinctions has Chuquicamata: It was the first of the Porphyry Coppers to use leaching as the method of treating the ore; its plant cost for producing is lower than that of any of the others, only Braden and Utah being close rivals; and it was worked for its copper long before any of the others. According to an authentic article published in Ingeniería Internacional (May, v 1982) the Incas smelted copper ores from Chuquicamata prior to 1536. Diego de ALnagro, to whom Charles V, King of Spain, generously allotted a one-fourth portion of South America lying south of Cuzco, the Inca metropolis, made an expedition into Chile in 1534. INTRODUCTION-SYSTEM DESIGN The design of an underground mining operation requires the integration of transportation, ventilation, ground control, and mining methods to form a system which provides the highest possible degree of safety for mine personnel; the lowest cost per ton of product ; the most suitable quality of final product, considering its intended use; the maximum percent recovery of the reserve, consistent with cost and subsidence rights ; and the minimum disturbance to the environment. The selection of mining method is generally the controlling factor in overall mine design. Some important considerations in the choice of mining method are: 1) Depth of cover over the coal seam. 2) Strength and thickness of rock strata in the overburden. 3) Characteristics of the coal seam, including thickness, nature and location of impurities or irregularities, dip (or pitch), nature and direction of cleavage, hardness, and structural strength of the coal. 4) Nature and strength of the immediate roof (top) over the coal seam. 5) Nature and strength of the floor (bottom) under the coal seam. 6) Presence and amount of explosive gas (methane). 7) Quantity of water likely to be encountered in the mining operation. 8) Any previous or concurrent mining in seams above or below the coal seam to be worked. 9) Any restrictions on recovery required for subsidence control. Topographical and geological reports and maps of the area are usually available from state and federal geological surveys, and contain excellent general information to guide more detailed investigations. Exploratory drilling, and the plotting and analysis of the information thus obtained, are essential steps in any development program, and aid in the correlation and evaluation of information gained by other means. In conforniity with the design of the oficials of the United States Steel Corporation for the standardization of the methods employed in the sampling and analysis of all materials encountered in their various lines of manufacture, the Chemists' Committee presents this compilatioti of standard methods for the sampling and subsequent analysis of molten pig-iron. In selecting the methods, the Committee employed the same line of procedure as in former cases, viz., the careful consideration of all the methods employed in each laboratory of the Corporation, evolving therefrom the several methods herein described, the immediate adoption of which is desired. The services of Messrs. W. B. N. Hawk, William Brady, and C. H. Rich, a sub-committee appointed for the preparation of the present paper, are gratefully acknowledged. II. Introduction. A quite obvious cause of nonconformity of results of comparative analyses in the various laboratories of the Corporation has been an apparent lack of uniformity of method in the sampling and analysis of molten iron. THE BEGINNING of a large enterprise is often as in- significant as a lump of leaven hidden in a bowl of meal or a handful of mustard seed that the wind blows across a field. In 1950 the company known today as the Phelps Dodge Corporation had nearly thirty-two thousand stockholders, paid salaries and wages of about fifty million dollars to some thirteen thousand persons, produced nearly four hundred and ninety million pounds of copper, and possessed net current assets of approximately one hundred and six million dollars. For the origin of this great business, one must go back approximately a hundred and fifty years to an obscure saddle-making shop in the small town of Hart- ford, Connecticut. Anson Greene Phelps, proprietor of the shop and master saddler in his own right, was born in 1781-the year of the Battle of Yorktown, the surrender of Cornwallis, and the close of the Revolutionary War Anson's forebears had come to America in the great Puritan migration that left fields, shops, pulpits, and hearthstones in the reign of Charles the First to transplant the strong, tough roots of their race, culture, and institutions in the New World.

The object of this paper is to describe the adaptation of electrical resistivity measurements to the particular case of exploration in which the surface is an expanse of water (river, lake, sea). Water in itself does not constitute an obstacle to electrical exploration. It is merely an overburden, which is fluid instead of being solid, and as a consequence the routine of the measurements has to be modified. Also, in many instances, the liquid under consideration is highly conductive (salt water). This introduces an additional difficulty into exploration work, and has to be overcome by the geophysicist. We do not propose to discuss here the basic principles of electrical resistivity measurements, which have been dealt with in various previous papers,' but will simply recall the two fundamental techniques which govern its field application: 1. Horizontal exploration, or method of the resistivity map, in which a series of electrical measurements are carried out at various stations, keeping the same electrode spacing. Thus, a horizontal layer of the subsoil, of a practically constant thickness, is explored. 2. Vertical exploration, or "vertical sounding"2 method, in which a seriesr of measurements is made with increasing electrode spacings at one or several stations. In this way, the apparent resistivity is determined at a given station for various increasing thicknesses of the ground.

George IV. Goetz, Milwaukee, Wis.: Mr. Campbell deserves much credit for his interesting paper. The literature of the development of the open-hearth process is distributed in many technical journals, and is difficult of access to many engineers. Since the development of the basic process, the open-hearth furnace has been raised from a subsidiary to an independent position. Certain high grades of soft steel can be produced in the basic open-hearth furnace, which cannot be produced by any other known process. In the United States the charges for the acid process generally consist of either scrap and pig-iron or so-called wash-metal and scrap : the pig-and-ore process, as carried out in England, is practiced but very little. The introduction of the basic process has made it possible to use about four times as much pig-iron with scrap as can be used in the acid mixtures. The availability of a cheap pig-iron, very low in silicon and sulphur, and carrying several per cent. of manganese, is one of the reasons why the basic open-hearth process has developed so rapidly in Germany, as regards the output per furnace and the excellent quality of the material produced. The acid Bessemer steel has an inherent stiffness, which is plainly shown when spring steel is made by the Bessemer and by the openhearth processes. In order to get them of about equal stiffness, the open-hearth steel must have about 0.60 per cent. carbon ; whereas, the Bessemer steel must then have ahout 0.45 carbon, the remaining constituents being apparently about the same in each product. It has proved impracticable, with American coke-pig-iron, to interrupt blowing at a certain point in order to make hard steel; and experience has therefore shown that it is best to eliminate nearly all the carbon, and then to recarburize to the desired point. OF late considerable experimental and theoretical interest has been shown in the rates of transformation from a single phase, usually a supercooled solid solution, into one or more phases. Such reactions may involve both diffusion and transformation of the major constituent, as in iron alloys, or it may simply involve diffusion, as in superstructure formation and in age-hardening systems. Most of the work has been confined to ferrous alloys1-9† although two investigations have been made on copper alloys 10-11. That such work may be of considerable practical importance has been demonstrated by Bain12, by the workers at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut für Eisenforschung13, 14, and by the everyday use of precipitation and age-hardening principles15. Experiments in this country have generally followed Davenport and Bain's technique of rapid supercooling followed by isothermal treatment. In Germany16, 17 the work has been extended to the study of the influence of accurately controlled and measured rates of cooling. The work on steel indicates that there are two subcritical temperature ranges where reaction starts sooner after quenching and proceeds at a more rapid rate than at other temperatures. At subcritical temperatures above Ar" where reaction is dependent upon atomic migration there is a period of time of which the length depends upon the alloy content and the temperature, before which no reaction has been detected. Ventilation may be defined as the process by which vitiated air of an enclosed or partly enclosed space is continuously replaced by fresh air. Fresh air has been defined as invigorating pure air. It was, however, well known that the untoward effects produced on those exposed to such air was not due to the concentration of the carbon dioxide. It has been found that the untoward effects on the comfort and efficiency of those so exposed are due to the increased temperature and humidity. It has been found that men can breathe air containing many times the amount of carbon dioxide found in our worst ventilated theaters and assembly halls, which, according to Rosenau, do not contain above 0.5 per cent, carbon dioxide. Nevertheless, in mines it sometimes occurs in sufficient quantities to cause symptoms in men or even unconsciousness and death. One-half of 1 per cent. of carbon dioxide in normal air causes a slight and unnotice-able increase in the ventilation of the lungs, that is, a man exposed to one-ha,lf of 1 per cent. of carbon dioxide will breathe a little deeper and a little faster than when in pure air. The growth of human knowledge is an evolutionary process. Historically our separate sciences came into existence as people became interested in various apparently unrelated domains of phenomena, and in this manner we acquired the sciences of physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and geology. As various of these sciences became established, cognizance of them came to be taken by the universities and in this manner there arose the traditional departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and geology of our American universities. As there was no particular rationality in the boundaries separating the various sciences, in the university departments the jurisdiction of each has assumed quite arbitrary limits. In the domain of earth phenomena the first science to grow up was that of geology, which arose originally from the activities of the collectors of rocks, minerals and fossils. Thus geology evolved as a descriptive science dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena for which elementary rational explanations were offered. The traditional treatment of phenomena by the science of geology has rarely been with more than an elementary regard for the fact that these phenomena were also phenomena of physics and chemistry. Since the latter part of the nineteenth century, a new approach to terrestrial phenomena has been emerging and becoming of so great a significance that it can no longer be ignored. This approach has been made by people trained primarily in the sciences of physics and chemistry, who have investigated terrestrial phenomena as constituting phenomena of their respective sciences. In this manner we have acquired the so-called "borderland sciences" of geophysics, the physics of the earth, and of geochemistry, the chemistry of the earth. Neither of these fields is new, having arisen chiefly at the hands of European investigators during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The European universities have long since given official recognition at least to geophysics, by the establishment of departments or institutes of geophysics, which are on a par with the university departments of the other sciences.

SURROUNDING the nuclear core of an atomic energy plant there are usually one or more thick walls of concrete, as required to protect instruments and personnel from the harmful effects of nuclear radiations. Sometimes these massive walls are of ordinary concrete weighing about 150 pcf. To reduce wall thicknesses, concrete weighing 200 to 350 pcf may be used. Such high densities are obtained by using natural aggregate processed from heavy ore, or by using steel slugs or iron shot in concrete. Mix data for a number of high-density concretes are summarized in Table I.1 High density at low cost is of prime importance in shields designed to absorb gamma rays. On the other hand, biological shields located near the reactor core must attenuate neutrons as well as gamma rays. In general, a biological shield should contain: 1) heavy elements to slow down high energy neutrons and to absorb gamma rays, 2) either light elements or hydrogenous materials to moderate neutrons of intermediate energy, and 3) materials to absorb neutrons once they have been slowed down to thermal energies. Some shield materials, iron and water for example, are effective in one or more of the above ways. On the other hand, some otherwise excellent shield materials have certain undesirable radiation properties that limit the ways or number of places they can be used. For example, when iron absorbs neutrons it emits secondary gamma rays of high energy. On the other hand, boron absorbs neutrons avidly without producing high energy gamma rays. In spite of its high cost, boron is sometimes used in concrete to minimize production of secondary gamma rays. In some shielding applications it is necessary to avoid materials that become radioactive when subjected to neutron bombardment, continuing to give off high energy gamma rays for long periods after being removed from a neutron field.

THE geognostical relations of the metals and their ores present many problems of great interest, alike for the geologist, the chemist, and the mining engineer. The association with certain rock-formations of characteristic mineral species may help to guide the geologist in the identification of geological horizons, and throw light on the chemical activities which have been especially manifested in certain periods; while it is clear that such relations, if established, must be of great utility to the miner, and especially to the explorer of new regions. In inquiries of this kind, however, it is only by careful observations over wide areas, and by the collocation of a great number of facts, that anything like a safe basis for induction can be attained. The effects of hasty and imperfect generalizations in this field have already in many instances been felt to the prejudice of scientific progress. I come before you to-night, therefore, not to lay down any laws or general principles, but to call your attention to certain facts, many of them doubtless known to you, which have forced themselves on my attention, with regard to the associations of various metallic ores and other useful minerals with different series of stratified rocks, and to ask you to aid the progress of this branch of geognostical inquiry. Your observations in the various regions to which you may be called by your professional duties will enable you to determine how far these associations are mere coincidences, and how far they are chemical and geological constants. The associations here to be noticed concern only those mineral species which occur, either distributed through the strata in such a manner as to show that they are contemporaneous deposits, or occupy rifts or gash-veins in these strata, and may be supposed to have been

Ik presenting this paper I will attempt to answer certain questions proposed at this meeting and describe and illustrate methods of producing sound steel in an economical and hence commercial manner, which are adaptable to the production of practically all steel manufacturers, by readily effected rational changes in the methods of casting, cooling, and subsequent handling of the ingots. In some of the high-grade mills of America, where it is essential to obtain perfectly sound billets or blooms, it is the practice to discard from 35 to 40 per cent. of the crop- or pipe-end, and even with this excessive discard, secondary pipe or shrinkage-cavities are frequently discovered during subsequent working of the blooms and billets into their various manufactured products. The usual discard of from 10 to 20 per cent, from the crop-end of the ingot, which is made by the present generally employed methods of form and solidifying of the castings, certainly does not give the slightest assurance of the saleable product being physically sound or chemically homogeneous. I am aware that in the past there has been and at the present time there still is a decided difference of expert opinion as to what constitutes physically sound steel. Physically sound steel, as I would classify it, must be free from blow-holes as well as pipe. The line of demarcation between harmless and harmful blow-holes is exceedingly difficult to define. It is certainly the better and safer practice to eliminate blow-holes from the saleable portion of the ingots and to form a well-defined shrinkage-cavity or pipe at the upper crop-end of ingot. The Belmont mill at Tonopah, Nev., was designed and constructed by the Belmont staff. Ground was broken in August, 1911, and milling operation started July 25, 1912. The metallurgical flow sheet, and the machinery adapted 60 carrying out operations in accordance with this plan, were decided upon from experience gained in the treatment of Belmorlt mine ores at the old Belmont mill at Millers, Nev. The detail drawings were madc by the engineering staff of the Tonopah-Belmont Development Co., under the supervision of Otto Wartenweiler, who also had direct charge of the construction, consulting with the General Superintendent of the company, Frederick Bradshaw, and the writer.
