The following description of methods for conducting gas-producer tests is probably the first attempt to give the subject an analytical, thorough and comprehensive treatment. In some cases where tests have been made, the methods have been so unsystematic and ambiguous that it has been impossible to secure comparable results. To eliminate this difficulty, the following provisional code of gas-producer tests— which has some resemblance to the code of boiler-trials of the American Society of MechanicalEngineers—has been developed. The primary object in testing a gas-producer is to determine whether the producer is working satisfactorily or, what is the same thing, to see if the efficiency is as high as it should be with the type of producer in question; and also to find out if the composition of the resulting gas is adapted to the work it has to do. In order that the test shall be of any value, it must be thorough and comprehensive, and must be conducted with skill and care. When so conducted, the test will reveal the economy of the'producer; and, by making suitable changes, the efficiency will often be increased very much. Rock mechanics research was carried out in the Anvil Points mine, Rifle, Colo., in the period 1964-1968, with the dual purpose of providing oil shale to the retorts of six major oil companies and to perform research on mining cycle operations to maximize extraction under safe conditions. An 80% extraction ratio within the mining area proved feasible. Test results provided data on optimum pillar and roof design. Studies of mine orientation showed that the mining headings should take into account the prevailing joint patterns and also the directions of the principal in-situ stresses acting in the region.

This paper presents an analysis of fracture mechanisms in coal subjected to bi-axial state of stresses, indentation of laterally con- fined coal specimen. Coal specimens were loaded to failure by the straight wedge indenters at various lateral confinement pressures. Strain distribution and acoustic emission characteristics of coal specimens under stress were recorded. The influence lines of vertical forces acting on the horizontal straight boundary of the coal specimen for each type of wedge indenter have been established using holographic interferometry technique. The effects of wedge indenter angle, confinement pressure, and coal anisotropy on fracture types, failure modes, and post-failure conditions were studied. The results indicated that combined application of holographic interferometry and acoustic emission monitoring techniques is not only suitable for studying deformability of heterogeneous and microscopically discontinuous material under stress but it also enhances the mode of fracture during the post failure stage.

SHERRITT Gordon Co. was formed in 1927 to exploit a copper zinc orebody located in the bush 90 miles north of The Pas, Manitoba. The mine went into production in 1931, operated for a year and a half, and closed because of the low price of copper. Reopened in 1937, it operated continuously until mined out in 1951, producing 8.5 million tons of ore. From 1937 on Sherritt Gordon conducted an energetic prospecting program throughout northern Manitoba, giving particular attention to the belt of favorable greenstone rocks north of the Churchill River. From 1937 to 1941 a number of gold showings were located but nothing of economic value was found.

Cycling operations have been successfully conducted in the La Gloria Zone for eight years. The cycling of this zone is now virtually completed. It is proposed that this report shall review the cycling operations of this reservoir so that the industry can more accurately evaluate the cycling process as a production method. The La Gloria project is one of the largest cycling operations in the State of Texas. The gas rights in the field are unitized in three operating units. By mutual agreement Magnolia Petroleum is the designated operator of the project for the 12 operators owning the gas rights. The La Gloria Corp, is the owner and operator of the cycling plant. The development and operation of the field are under the direction of an Operators Committee comprised of a representative of each operator. The Operators Committee is assisted by an Engineering and Geological Sub-Committee. The La Gloria gas field is situated approximately three miles north of Fal-furrias, Tex., and lies principally in the extreme south end of Jim Wells County, with its outer limits extending into the north end of Brookes County, Tex. APPLICATION of electric logs has been used in correlation of subsurface structure to determine the size and shape of the oil reservoir. [ ] Such a knowledge is hardly complete until saturation and productivity are determined for the various horizons. It is difficult to use electric logs successfully for this purpose because of the many factors that influence the curves. In this work an effort was made to establish an empirical correlation between formation resistivity for a series of electric-log curves and water saturation and oil productivity of sand. Electric logs were obtained by recording with 10 different electrode spacings through the same interval of a well. In the analysis of these curves all factors except two, a dependent and independent variable, were held constant. The interval studied had been cored and a large number of samples were analyzed in the core laboratory in order to compare the values of permeability and saturation with the measured values of formation resistivity. Results of this analysis indicate: (I) the depth to which mud filtrate enters a sand body, (2) a correlation between permeability and sand resistivity for shallow penetration depths, and (3) that the water saturation for an oil sand can be determined from the measured sand resistivity after making suitable correc- [ ] tions for sand thickness. The proceduer in the last method depends on a correction for thickness factor and a theoretical curve. The accuracy of the theoretical curve is now being tested in the laboratory.

Selective desliming holds much promise for upgrading low-grade, finely disseminated iron ores that are not readily amenable to conventional flotation. The process is extremely sensitive to the presence of calcium and magnesium ions that are in process water or are released by constituent minerals. The effects of these two alkaline earth ions on quartz were compared through streaming potential measurements, flocculation and cationic flotation tests, abstraction tests and scanning electron microscope studies. Calcium ion, adsorbed as CaOH+, and magnesium ion, attached by heterocoagulation as Mg(OH)2 precipitate, were responsible for the flocculation of quartz suspension and for the depression in cationic flotation of silica in alkaline pulp solutions. Magnesium hydroxide coating could be removed, similarly to adsorbed calcium ion, by complexation with EDTA and polyphosphates.

ABOUT three years ago at a coal mining institute meeting, it was predicted that mechanical load-ing underground would progress faster than either the electric coal-cutting machines or electric loco-motives had in previous years. This prediction has proved correct so far. In 1925 over 6,000,000 tons of,coal was loaded mechanically underground in the United States and it is estimated that the 1926 tonnage will reach 10,000,000. The use of electric mining machines and locomotives .has prepared the way for quick results. Most coal mines are now equipped with electric power and have a competent staff who understands its use. In spite of this advantage the introduction of the loading machines brings many new problems. Im-proved and concentrated transportation; doing the drilling, shooting, tracklaying and face timbering with company men instead of the former tonnage men; doing the work on the new basis in an economical and efficient manner; altering or modifying mining systems where necessary to further improve the work and reduce oper-ating costs; improving the percentage of lump coal and reducing the slack content where desirable; improving the cleaning of the coal and obtaining a more dependable .and uniform output are a few of the problems that must be met. Each of the different types of loaders now on the market has its particular advantages and disadvantages for a given mining condition. Even with the same mining conditions one type will work well under one ;system of handling, whereas another may favor another system or mining method.

HISTORY OF ASHIO SMELTER The Ashio copper mine, which formed the main part of Furukawa mining industry, is located inland of Kanto area, and is known as the oldest copper mine of Japan. The mining started even since 1610, and Mr. Furukawa began management in 1877. Afterwards, within a short period, the mine became to have the highest productivity in the Far East. The total quantity of mined copper reached approximately more than 800 thousand tons. The mother rock of the ore deposit in Ashio was rhyolite, and was formed of sissurefulling and irregular clod that was called Kajika deposit. The lode was nzrrow of 6 to 7cm. The mineral was formed mainly of chalcopyrite, including also pyrite, pyrrhotite, and arsenopyrite that were not favorable. After the founding of the copper mine, the Ashio smelter started the operation of Mabuki process as the beginning in 1611, and subsequently adopted the processes of the blast furnace, reverberatory furnace, and flash smelting furnace of the present use. As indicated above, the copper ore of Ashio mine included arsenic. For the purpose to remove it, the operation of the arsenic trioxide production using MacDougall's multiple hearth roaster was started in 1918, and it maintained the status of having the most qualified technique within the country. However, as the completeness in the disposition of anti-pollution and safety had been requested in those years, we studied and developed a unique equipment in 1970. It excludes the heavy metals especially arsenic and copper from the waste water of sulfuric acid process of Flash Smelter's exhaust gas.

A Reference to the geological map of Alabama shows the Goalmeasures of that State to form three distinct fields. The Coosu, or most easterly, contains about one hundred square miles ; the Cahaba, or middle field, which is also the most southern true coal in the United States, contains about 230 square miles ; and the Warrior field, which contains in the State of Alabama some 5000 square miles, is the southern extremity of the great carboniferous deposit, which extends through Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. But very little has yet been done towards developing those coalfields, partly owing to the absence of all commercial manufacturing enterprise in the South under slavery, and partly owing to the want of capital and the disturbed condition of the South since the war. Arsenical gold ores occur in many parts of the world, including numerous mines in Canada and the western United States. Free gold is often finely disseminated in the grains of sulfide minerals, arsenopyrite, pyrite, orpiment and realgar. Generally a sulfide concentrate is produced by flotation. Arsenical ores or concentrates are not amenable to direct cyanidation and therefore are considered refractory. A wide variety of roasting equipment and conditions have been used by the mills to remove arsenic and sulfur from these concentrates. The resulting calcine is easy to cyanide and gold is recovered from the cyanide solution by zinc dust cementation. Room-temperature potential-pH diagrams and high-temperature phasestability diagrams are presented to discuss the chemistry of the gold cyanidation, cementation, and roasting steps in the presence of arsenic. The environmental aspects of arsenic discharge are also included.

AT a recent meeting of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, during a discussion upon the compression of air, attention was called to an apparent anomaly in the phenomena attending the compression. At a subsequent meeting this apparent anomaly was explained by Prof. Herschel, and all the facts observed shown to be strictly in accordance with the laws of thermodynamics. Upon reading the report of the discussion in the published transactions of the society, it occurred to me that an attempt to determine mathematically the amounts of energy (whether in the form of heat or of work) expended and absorbed in compressing air, and causing it to perform work by expansion, might prove of use to some who have not access to any treatise upon the application of the laws of thermodynamics to the compression of air, and who have not the time or the inclination to make such application for themselves. In the past year or two, considerable effort has been expended to calculate the spherical wave propagation phenomena associated with explosions in a "hard rock" medium (Godfrey, 1969; McKay and Godfrey, 1969; Burford, et al, 1970). This effort was stimulated primarily by the recognition that early calculations predicted peak particle displacements which seriouly disagreed with field data. In most of the calculations mentioned above, rock was modeled as an inelastic continuum (see for example Isenberg, et al, 1970 for some recent results using "classical" elastic-plastic material property models). However, several investigators (Handin, et al, 1967; Cherry, et al, 1967) have shown that the simple classical yield surface models cannot simultaneously account for the observed brittle failures of intact materials under compression, extension and torsion. One approach to more correct modeling of dynamic rock behavior is to make the inelastic model more and more sophisticated. For ex- ample, recent experiments at the University of Utah (Swanson, 1969) have suggested possible modifications to the yield surface model that could better account for the ductile behavior of intact granite sam- ples under various states of stress. The approach followed in this paper proceeds in an entirely different direction. We want the physics which is built into our conception of rock to be as simple as possible while at the same time reproducing the most important features of rock's behavior. Therefore, we abandon the requirement that rock be treated strictly as a continuum. Instead we consider a "discontinuous" model in which one of the most significant characteristics of rock is treated..

Finite-element analysis of slopes and a field trial of a slope support system have shown that a considerable potential for excavation reduction exists if slopes are designed with variable slope angles with depth, and if artificial support systems are made an integral part of the slope design. A cost analysis has shown that the savings for a straight 500 ft. high slope with artificial support can amount up to $900 per foot of horizontal pit extension. Horizontal stresses and displacements can be overestimated by up to 100% by employing a two-dimensional finite-element analysis instead of a three-dimensional one. Stress magnitudes differ considerably when comparing results from slope models subjected to a gravity stress field with slope models subjected to high horizontal stresses. Because the latter case appears to be predominant for open pits, slope stability analyses have to be adjusted accordingly. A field trial measuring peak accelerations and displacements has shown that the use of pre- shearing for termination bench blasts, in cases of already heavily fractured ground, can be more detrimental than beneficial.

THE resistance to flow of mixtures of gas and oil in passing up through the flow tubing of oil wells operated by gas-lift or by natural flow is a factor in oil-recovery technic that has received but little attention. Yet accurate design of a tubing installation for a particular set of conditions, where operation is by either of 'these methods, is impossible without quantitative data on the pressure loss suffered by the oil-gas mixture in its passage through the well tubing to the surface. Because of lack of such information, petroleum production technologists have been compelled to approach this problem by "cut-and-try" methods, which, doubtless in many cases, has resulted in the installation and use of tubing too large or too small for most efficient utilization of the expansive force of the gas used in lifting the oil. Impressed with the necessity for information of this character, the authors have conducted a series of tests with large-scale apparatus in the petroleum engineering laboratories of the University of California, designed to be productive of data that would afford a means of attacking the problem of flow-tubing design on a more scientific basis.

The rapid and comparatively recent development of flotation has opened so fascinating a field for study and research that the older processes of gravity concentration no longer receive the attention they deserve. The early work of Munroe1 and Richards,2 and the more recent contributions by Clevenger and Coe,3 Laist and Wiggin,4 Ammon,5 Bardwell,6 Crowfoot,7 and Hayden8 to mention only some which have appeared in our own Transactions-and by Schulz,9 have furnished so much data that to offer something new seems a difficult task. It is still possible, however, to present known facts from a different point of view, and, with this in mind, the writer has undertaken to express basic principles of gravity concentration in terms of simple mathematics and mechanics; the conclusions thus reached will be found to correspond, in general, with those obtained by experimental methods. Rittinger, in his classic Aufbereitungskunde (1867), reached analogous conclusions by way of intricate higher mathematics, for which reason his interesting investigations have remained a sealed book to most of us. The writer hopes that a more elementary treatment of the subject, based in part on Rittinger's methods, may, arouse new interest in the study of basic principles.

Although significant phosphate mining activity has occurred in four western states-Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming-southeastern Idaho contains the largest, most easily mineable reserves, and mining has focused there. More than half of the western phosphate field's economic reserves are within a 32 x 96-km (20 x 60-mile) rectangle bounded by Montpelier, Idaho, on the south, Soda Springs on the west, and Grays Lake on the east. A large amount of this land lies within the boundaries of the Caribou National Forest.
