Exploration activities were maintained at a high level throughout 1966. Numerous significant discoveries and developments in which geologists played an important part were announced. Although the complete results of exploration activities carried out during the year by private companies have not been announced, the following are among the more important developments that have been made public knowledge. In the western states, exploration for practically all of the metals continued at a high rate. Substantially increased interest in uranium occurred this year, and it is felt by many that a real boom in the demand for uranium may come about in the near future. The reasons have been the more rapid acceptance of atomic power than had been anticipated, and that uranium producers can now sell their product to private interests and even foreign countries. A tremendous demand for uranium is anticipated by many, and this has rekindled exploration activity. On the Colorado Plateau, in Wyoming, and in the area around Grants, N. M., a number of companies have undertaken uranium exploration programs, among which are Kerr-McGee, Homestake, Anaconda and Utah Construction. A new uranium orebody in Texas was brought into production early in 1966 by Susquehanna Western.

A full-scale operational test was conducted on the Coaltek preheating and pipeline charging system at the Semet-Solvay Div. of Allied Chemical at Ironton, Ohio, for the purpose of determining whether a high-quality blast furnace coke could be made from blends containing at least 75% Illinois No. 6 Coal and at the same time reduce air pollution during the charging of the ovens. The coke produced had similar physical characteristics as compared to our conventional wet-charged coke, with the exception of smaller size for the preheat coke. Air pollution during charging was con- trolled and there were no serious operating problems. The coking time was reduced 25% from our normal 17 hr for wet charging to 12.8 hr for preheated charges. The blast furnace performance with preheat coke was satisfactory.

Nowhere in the world has cone classification in closed-circuit grinding with tube mills reached as high a state of development as on the Wit-watersrand. In the development of the Far East section the necessity of fine grinding to obtain satisfactory residues gave rise to a situation with which the cone could cope only at a great sacrifice in efficiency of tube-mill grinding. H. A. White1 recognized the limitation of the cone in his study of the theory of tube milling as early as 1915, but it was not until Ewing, Davis and Willey2 carried out their tests at Springs Mines during 1920 that the advantages of mechanical classifiers were demonstrated. During the fall of 1924 the writer supervised a series of tests with Dorr classifiers undertaken by Mr. White, Consulting Metallurgist, at the mill of the Geduld Proprietary Mines, Ltd., Dersley, Transvaal (Far East Rand). The importance of classification to obtain efficient tube-mill grinding was thoroughly demonstrated. The installation of classifiers of the above type that followed the test confirmed the results of the experimental work. Tests with Cones, Straight Type and Bowl Classifiers The test at the Geduld mill was made to determine the relative grinding efficiency of a tube mill when grinding in closed circuit with cones, straight type Dorr classifier and Dorr bowl classifier. The efficiency of a tube mill, as expressed in this article, is based on the tons of minus 200-mesh material produced by the mill. The efficiency is also expressed in terms of tons of minus 90-mesh material produced by the mills to correspond to the standard practice on the Witwatersrand. The behavior of fluids in the voids of a rock is fundamental to the study of many of the problems of oil-field development and production. For it is by virtue of these openings between grains that oil and gas are able to move through the rock, to be contained by the rock, and to pass from the rock into the well. The capacity to contain fluids is measured by the porosity of the rock, and the ease of fluid movement is governed by the permeability. When the engineer wishes to estimate the amounts of oil and gas in an underground reservoir he is often concerned with the porosities of the rocks and, when dealing with problems relating to rate of production, he is more likely to be interested in the permeabilities of the rocks. Rocks are permeable because they are porous, but they may be porous without being permeable. Clays are very porous, and yet they are impermeable from a practical standpoint. Attempts have been made1 to correlate permeability with porosity for certain rock members but, where a definite relationship between these two properties is found to hold, it is purely fortuitous and local. Porosity and permeability do not necessarily bear any quantitative relationship to one another. The porosity of a substance is the percentage of void volume to bulk volume. The petroleum engineer is usually interested only in the inter-granular voids that are accessible to fluids. In measuring porosity he does not wish to include scaled openings. The measurement he desires is one of "available porosity," otherwise called "apparent porosity." The porosity of a natural aggregate of solid grains, such as a sandstone or clay, is governed by: (1) Grain-size distribution, (2) angularity of grain, (3) colloidal content, (4) degree of compaction. It is not difficult, for unconsolidated rocks, to measure the effect of any one of these when it alone is varied, and then to predict what the effects on porosity will be for such single variables. IN NOVEMBER 1933 I had the pleasure of receiving an autographed copy of a small brochure entitled "Birth of the Porphyry Coppers." The author, James Colquhoun, a distinguished British mining engineer, had been the dominant figure in the Arizona Copper Company, Limited, which, until its acquisition by the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1921, had been the principal producer of copper in the Morenci district. In addition to the highly productive Humboldt and Longfellow mines it owned the Clay property, which, of course, has now become Arizona's No. 1 copper mine. Except for Utah Copper it is the premier Porphyry copper enterprise in the United States. Mr. Colquhoun's little volume was inspired by THE PORPHYRY COPPERS which had appeared early that year. In a most courteous and friendly way he adduces data to show that "we (Arizona Copper Company Limited) were successfully treating low-grade porphyry ores in quantity for at least four years (1901 to 19W) before the Utah Copper Company did anything at all." This last remark is based on the figures in THE PORPHYRY COPPERS showing that Utah's first production came from the Copperton pilot plant in 1905. Mr. Colquhoun traces the story of Morenci beginning in 1883 when he first arrived there. He tells how the rich self-fluxing ores (containing lime- stone, silica, and iron in proportion to permit direct smelting to produce black copper) were gradually exhausted. High-grade siliceous ore could be mixed in limited quantity with the self-fluxing ores; and oxidized ores were leached to contribute substantially to the production of the district. But

The stack gases from regenerative furnaces lare very seldom utilized for the production of steam. If the temperature of the gases is not higher than 300" C. (572" F.) there is no economy in their use for this purpose, as the amount of available heat is very small and the temperature is so little above that of the steam that the interchange is too slow. With higher temperatures of the waste gases, however, good results can be obtained. At the plant of the New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) at Palmerton there are a number of return tubular boilers, each 6 ft. in diameter and 20 ft. long, with 96 3.5-in. tubes, which are heated by the waste gases from the spelter furnaces. These furnaces have continuous regenerators heating the air only and the stack gases reach the boilers at a temperature of about 450". The gas producers for one of these furnaces require 14 tons of anthracite (a mixture of Nos. 2 and 3 buckwheat), and the waste heat from the furnace gives a little more than 42 h.p. in steam. The boilers are not well adapted for the purpose, as they are much too large for the amount of heat going to them and the area of the tubes is not sufficient to take the gas from two furnaces without causing an objectionable amount of back pressure. The plant was built without any idea of using waste-heat boilers, and it was impossible to place the latter as close to the furnaces as they should be. Furnace and boiler are connected by an underground brick flue in which the temperature of the gas drops about 100°, losing 40 per cent. of its available heat. If the boilers were close to the furnaces the horse power of each would be 70 instead of 42. Even under these unfavorable conditions the boilers have been very advantageous, as one boiler easily supplies the steam necessary for two batteries of producers. With such low gas temperatures the heating surface of the boilers is, of course, not as efficient and the flue areas need to be considerably larger than for coal firing.

The rates of sulfurization and desulfurization of calcium aluminate, silicate, and ferrite melts by CO + CO2 + SO2 mixtures at 1550°C are reported. It is shown that for melts 10 to 15 mm deep transport of sulfide ions within the melt controls the rate of sulfur transfer. The rate data from shallow melts, i.e., 1 to 4 mm deep, have been analyzed on the basis of a diffusion or a reaction controlled process and indications are that the both processes may play a part in controlling the rate of sulfur reaction. The rates of desulfurization of silicate XVEACTION equilibria between metals, metal oxides, and gases have received considerable attention in recent years. However, the understanding of and aluminate melts increase with increasing PCO2/PCO ratio in the gas stream, the effect being most marked for aluminate melts. The sulfide equilibrium data obtained from the present work are shown to be in accord with the results of previous studies. It is shown that carbon dioxide has a measurable solubility in silicate, aluminate, and ferrite melts. Consideration is given to the partial equilibria which control the directions and the rates of reactions occurring simultaneously in complex heterogeneous systems. the kinetics of heterogeneous reactions, particularly those occurring at elevated temperatures has not been improved appreciably. Almost all the metallurgical reactions occur in heterogeneous systems involving two or more phases. Although in many authoritative text books and original Papers the basic principles concerning the kinetics of heterogeneous reactions are clearly underlined, they are seldom used to the best advantage in kinetic studies, particularly those involving the metallurgical reac-

During the winter of 1877-78 the Glendon Iron Company, by the advice of the superintendent, Mr. Frank Firmstone, decided to make the experiment of exploding a heavy blast of gunpowder in their limestone quarry at Cedar Hill, Palmer Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The amount of limestone used in the five furnaces of the company is about 60,000 tons per annum, and it was thought that with successful results? this entire amount or more would be thrown down at a single operation, disintegrating the mass to a greater or less extent, and obviating the necessity of blasting and boring the rock from the face of the cliff, both of which operations are slow, and therefore, costly. A full survey of the laboratory and blast furnace tests carried out on two types of acid pellets is given. From the lab tests it appears that type B has a better low temperature disintegration index and a lower reducibility index than type A. The chemical composition and swelling indexes do not differ for both types. From the blast furnace test periods, carried out with a charge of 45% of pellets and 45% of sinter, it follows that both types of pellets lead to the same pig-iron production, blast furnace permeability, and blast furnace dust production. It also can be concluded that type B pellets cause a significantly higher coke consumption.

In spite of the fact that the percentage of true colloids in an ore grind is very small,' these pulps exhibit many of the properties of true colloidal suspensions. A quartz particle, appreciably finer than 10 microns in diameter, has a settling rate so low that at a dilution of 5:l or over, the capacity of a settling tank to settle such particles would be uneconomical if the individual particle rate prevailed. However, by grouping the finer particles into aggregates or flocs, the settling rate can be increased to an economical value. The colloidal chemistry of pulp thickening is thus chiefly concerned with particles having diameters of between 1 and 10 microns, although particles as coarse as 40 microns in diameter are more or less involved. These particles must be associated in such a manner that they settle at an economical rate and give a clear, supernatant liquid or overflow. The treatment of the subject may be divided into three phases, cach phase having a more or less different colloidal aspect. The first phase is the problem of getting the pulp or suspension into the proper condition of flocculence; the second is the behavior of the flocculent pulp in its initial and intermediate stages of settling; the third is the behavior of the flocs in the find period of settling or thickening stage. Let us look first into the methods and mechanism of obtaining the flocs and then consider their behavior and properties. Flocculation Colloids are merely ordinary substances reduced to a very small particle size, the upper limit being placed by definition at 1 micron (0.001 mm.) diameter by the soil chemists and at from 0.2 to 0.1 micron by various other colloid chemists. The lower limit is reached only when the particles approach molecular dimensions. The term L'colloid" should not necessarily imply lack of crystallinity. Particles as small as 0.01 to 0.02 micron give perfect X-ray patterns, while with 0.005 micron particles the bands on the powder photograph are merely broaderled and diffused.2

This paper represents a portion of a larger study concerning dispersion of major, minor and trace elements in wall-rock about orebodies in part of the Colorado Mineral Belt. This phase of the work pertains to the Mg/Ca ratio variations in wall-rock adjacent to orebodies in two mines, one in the Horseshoe Mining District (Hilltop mine), and the other in the Alma Mining District (Phillips mine). The two districts lie adjacent to one another, the Horseshoe District on the south and the Alma District on the north, and are commonly referred to as one, the Alma-Horseshoe Mining District. The Alma-Horseshoe Mining District is located 80 miles southwest of Denver, Colo., (Fig. 1) in Park County, on the eastern slope of the Mosquito range. The area is typified by rugged relief with altitudes of from 10,500 to 14,000 ft. The Horseshoe District is separated from the Lead-ville Mining District by the crest of the Mosquito range, with the Leadville District to the west. The Alma-Horseshoe District has been considered as peripherial to the Leadville District, and has not received the detailed attention that the Leadville District has. These two mines were selected for this study because of their ease of access; the attitude of the workings and the drill holes to the known mineralization; the similarity of the mineralization; and because the mineralization occurs in carbonates in both mines but are of different ages. In the Hilltop mine mineralization is confined to the Leadville dolomite (Mis-issippian) and is principally lead with subordinate zinc and silver. In the Phillips mine the mineralization occurs in the Peerless dolomite and shale (Cambrian) and in the Manitou dolomite (Ordovician) and is principally zinc with subordinate lead, silver,

THE use of copper sulfate for improving the flotation behavior of sphalerite is probably at least 15 years old. The original discovery of its activating influence is somewhat obscure. The story goes that in the mill at Mascot, Tenn., its favorable action was discovered by accident, early in 1914, as follows: The original laboratory test work on a sphalerite ore gave favorable flotation results, but after a mill had been built the flotation concentration of the ore was very unsatisfactory. In diagnosing the probable reasons, one fact pointed out was that the laboratory test machine had been constructed of bronze whereas the commercial machine allowed pulp to come in contact only with wood and iron. A plate of sheet copper was hung in the flotation machine and results immediately improved. At first fanciful explanations of electrolytic and electrostatic behavior were given credence, but when the copper plate was removed and a small amount of copper sulfate substituted in the pulp an even more favorable result was obtained. Toward the end of 1914 copper sulfate was also adopted in the acid flotation circuit of the Butte and Superior Copper Co. Just who is responsible for the original discovery the present writers do not know: It seems strange that in that era of flotation litigation this discovery was not patented. While for pragmatic purposes it may be sufficient to know that the mere addition of copper compounds to a flotation pulp is sufficient to activate the flotation of the sphalerite, for scientific purposes it is quite desirable to know more about how the action takes place. It is the purpose of this paper to present certain evidence dealing with the mechanism of the beneficial effect. The description of the effect as activation in contradistinction to depression is now common in both the English and German languages. It makes no assumptions as to whether the zinc sulfide surfaces have been filmed with copper compounds. In fact, the principal differences of opinion expressed in the literature deal with whether there is an actual formation of CuS (or even Cu2S) on the surface of the sphalerite.

IT is my purpose to give some of the results obtained by an experience of nearly seven years in working ores by the method frequently called the Washoe Process, and in several mills of which I have had charge, but principally in the Owyhee Mill, at Silver City, Idaho, which had twenty '650-pound stamps, and sixteen pans. I shall discuss here merely the mechanical details for working ores generally, subdividing the subject as follows: 1. Preparation of the ore for the stamps; 2. The crushing in the battery; 3. The settling of sand or pulp in vats or tanks; 4. The treatment in the pans; 5. The results obtained in settlers, agitators, and concentrators ; 6. The straining of quicksilver, cleaning of amalgam, and retorting; 7. The saving of slimes and their subsequent treatment; 8. The loss of quicksilver. For descriptions of the various kinds of orebreakers, stamps, tanks, pans, settlers, etc., I must refer to the various works on these subjects, prominent among which are the reports of the United States Commissioner of Mining Statistics, and the volume on "Mining Industry," the third volume of the United States Geological Survey on the Line of the Fortieth Parallel through the gold and silver bearing regions of the great West, undertaken under the able guidance of Clarence King, assisted by Mr. James D. Hague and others. In this discussion it will be assumed that the general arrangement of the quartz mill is understood; and the question will be treated how to secure, from such a mill, the greatest economy in working, combined with the largest results. This place seems fittest for a single preliminary suggestion-namely, that there should be double "floors" throughout the mill, so that nothing can sift through and be lost.

Based on the mineralogy, phase characteristics and compositions of the smelter feed, the smelter products and the smelter wastes, the sources and distributions of mercury and arsenic in the Afton copper smelter, Kamloops, British Columbia have been determined. Of the total mercury In the feed, approximately 33% is in solid solution in tennantite, 51% is in native copper and 16% occurs as mercurian silver. Arsenic in the feed occurs mainly as tennantite. Under current smelting conditions, 99.6% of the total mercury In the feeds enters the off-gas cleaning system. From this off-gas, about 1% of the total mercury, occurring as dust, is recirculated to the flotation concentrate; 4.6% of the total mercury is contained in SO2 scrubber sludge which is discharged to tailings. Approximately 78% of the total arsenic in the smelter reports in the copper products; 20% is incorporated in the dust and slag which are subsequently recirculated to the mill. Only 1.8% is rejected as scrubber sludge, and less than 0.2% 1s released to the mercury scrubber.

In the course of a recent investigation1 to develop a more satisfactory white-metal bearing alloy, a number of alloy systems were studied. The cadmium-nickel system showed characteristics desirable in a bearing alloy, and the system was therefore studied in some detail. Experimental Method Alloying cadmium with nickel offered no serious difficulty. After melting the cadmium, clean sheet nickel was added while the temperature was maintained at 500" to 600" C. A few crystals of ammonium chloride2 served to clean the nickel when the latter did not "wet" readily. In preparing the individual alloys for thermal and microscopic investigation, a "hardener" containing about 10 per cent nickel was used. Thermal Experiments and Apparatus Time-temperature cooling curves were made by standard methods. Globe electrolytic cadmium was added to the hardener to make a melt of the desired composition weighing between 100 and 200 grams. This charge was placed in a Pyrex test tube, 1 by 10 in., closed with a rubber stopper carrying a thermocouple sheath and quartz stirring rod. The assembly was lowered to a depth of about 4½ in. into an electric resistance pot furnace containing a No. 0000 clay-graphite crucible (to catch the melt in case of a break in the test tube). After the tube was clamped in this position, an asbestos-magnesia mixture was loosely packed in the furnace around the tube and a "halved" cover of transite placed on top. This left at least 5 in. of the test tube protruding from the furnace. When the alloy had melted, the thermocouple was adjusted so that the hot junction was l! in. from the bottom of the test tube. The melt was stirred thoroughly for several minutes to insure composition homogeneity and absence of thermal gradients.

The oxygen-fuel oil burner lance is a very useful tool at the Monessen B.O.F. It increases the overall flexibility of the operation. An additional 15,000 to 20,000 ingot tons can be produced at a given hot metal supply. It helps overcome sporadic drops in hot metal thermal values and/or supply. It results in increased yield, in particular, on high carbon heats where much yield was lost on reblow triggered slag reactions. The burner has also been adopted as a standard tool to aid burning in new vessel linings. Overall, steelmaking performance has improved with the use of standard preheat practice. Scrap charges up to 50 percent have been used routinely in times of extreme hot metal shortages, but the performance is weak in some categories. Development of a single step oxy-oil process is in progress. In this process, scrap and hot metal are charged as in the normal B.O.F. practice, but fuel oil is fired with the refining oxygen.

When Ponce de León landed in Florida in 1573 he was told of an Indian chief that possessed much gold. In 1576 Diego Meruelo obtained some of it from the Indians, and in 1579 Álvarez de Pineda reported that the natives wore ornaments of gold, which they obtained from the rivers. These statements all refer to the southern Appalachian region. The name is recorded in 1527; when Pamphilo Narváez landed at Tampa he heard that there was much gold to be obtained in a region named Apalache. * In 1564 René Laudonnière describes the methods used by the natives to win gold in the Apalatcy mountains.† However, no serious mining operations were undertaken until long afterward; the mining of gold in the Southern States may be said to have had its beginning when a nugget was found at the Reed mine, in North Carolina, in 1799. This nugget, which was of "the size of a small smoothing iron", was kept for several years before the finder learned what it was, but later more lumps, one weighing 28 pounds, were found in the same locality, and eager digging ensued. ‡ Thomas Jefferson, in his `Notes on Virginia', mentions the finding of a quartz specimen, not a nugget as is generally stated, that contained 17 pennyweights of gold; this was found on the Rappahannock river in 1782. §

WHILE working, during the summer of 1877, upon the "Chemical Composition and Physical Properties of Steel Rails," the results of which are given in my report with this title, I was struck with the surprising wear which some of the rails, which would ordinarily be called soft rails, had endured. At that time I knew of no chemical measure of softness except low carbon, and I found that a number of rails with low carbon had endured as high or higher tonnage, with apparently as little loss of metal by wear, as those with higher carbon. My own work on steel rails that summer did not embrace any definite experiments as to the amount of metal worn off the rail per million tons which had passed over it; and so I could get no more definite answer from that work, to the question at the head of this paper, than was given by comparing the appearance of the worn section of the rail with its tonnage. This comparison, however, served to arouse in my mind the query, whether the commonly received opinion as to the relation between the hardness and wearing power of steel is correct, as applied to steel rails. This opinion, if I am right, is: the harder the steel, the better will be the wear, and the limit of hardness is simply one of safety ; hard, brittle steel being, of course, more liable to break than soft, tough steel. The query, although aroused, did not bear any immediate fruit, and, as will be evident to any one reading it, the report above referred to was written with the commonly received opinion in mind. Since that time I have collected a little information upon this subject, which I should be glad to submit to the Institute, if for no other purpose, for the sake of arousing attention, and directing study to the question of hardness versus wear in steel rails. Before making known this information, however, permit me a few words in reference to hardness. How shall we measure the hardness of steel ? Of the various ways of getting indications as to the hardness of steel, which are known, three will serve our present purpose. These are: 1st. High carbon. It is generally agreed, I think, that at least within proper limits, the greater the amount of combined carbon in a piece of steel, the harder the steel, and I need not do

The paper of Reno H. Sales on Ore Deposits at Butte, Mont.,' is a careful and painstaking work, an important contribution to the literature of the subject. As is almost inevitable in a work of such magnitude, a few misstatements occur; and some of these I shall endeavor to point out. Mr. Sales has also fallen into error, as I think, in the application of his theory of ore deposition; and while the modification which I venture to suggest is a minor one geologically, it is of great economic importance. I refer to Mr. Sales's idea of an outward migration of mineralizing solutions from a supposed central copper zone. In order that I may make myself plain, I must first epitomize the theory as a whole, which I understand to be this: All of the Butte ore deposits (save those along the Continental fault, not herein considered) are derived from solutions of magmatic origin, which, at the beginning of their ascent from a great depth, were acid in reaction, hot, and were carriers of copper, zinc, manganese and other metals. As they departed from their point of origin they lost heat, and, because of reactions with the wall rock, became more and more alkaline. The metal deposited from these solutions in their hot condition was principally copper; and, as they cooled, they deposited less and less copper and more and more manganese and zinc, until the copper practically disappeared. With this theory in general I have no fault to find, nor have I, it must be stated, the qualifications necessary to enable me to pass upon it critically; but it seems to me to be reasonable and probable, and is one which I am quite willing to accept. But Mr. Sales, for what seem to me to be insufficient reasons, has assumed that there is one deep central source of copper, relatively rich and small, from which all the solutions emanated. From this central source the solutions rose, through one channel or through a group of channels, to the surface, at and within a small area called the central copper zone,

The coal industry, one of the great basic industries in the nation, plays a major role in the American economy. Coal is the principal fuel used in generating tremendous quantities of low-cost power so necessary to the nation. Two-thirds of the electrical energy and one-fourth of all energy consumed in the nation is produced from coal. Large-scale production of steel, cement, and chemicals is vitally dependent upon this natural resource. Because of extensive reserves and low mining cost, it is one of the few natural resources in which the United States is a significant exporter. During 1965 in excess of 500 million tons of coal were produced, almost 10% over the previous year; more than 50 million tons were shipped to foreign markets. The utility market gained approximately 8% during the year for a total of 242 million tons.
