The effect of conditioning energy input on the metallurgical results of an emulsion flotation process has beenattributed by previous authors to a detergency process.This paper shows that such a process does not explain the data and that an attrition mechanism is more appropriate.

Laboratory flotation tests on fresh cyclone overflow samples are a useful tool to troubleshoot and indeed to improve plant performance; however, reproducibility between laboratory flotation test and plant performance is important for interpretation of the laboratory tests and hence their usefulness. Chemical reproducibility can be achieved with the addition of the required reagents; however, reproducing the physics of forces and energy in a 5 L cell compared to a 50 000 L plant cell or a 500 000 L plant cell is not generally studied or discussed. For some tests such as collector evaluation the physics of the flotation process may not be critical, but for some evaluations in the laboratory, it can be important.All flotation plants suffer from losses of valuable <20 µm mineral. Selective mineral aggregation has long been recommended to improve the poor flotation recovery of <20 µm sulfide minerals; however, successfully testing any type of selective sulfide mineral aggregation’s effect on flotation recovery in the laboratory on practical plant samples requires reproducing plant cell physics. The energy input per litre and the forces in a laboratory cell are vastly different to a plant cell. Reproducibility between laboratory and plant tests requires that these differences be minimised. Mineral sands dry plants consist of a large number of repetitive unit operations with significant transport delays, in the form of stream pipes, conveyors and elevators. As part of the P255 mineral sands sponsorship and using the JKMRC developed conductor/non-conductor (CNC) gauges, control loops have been implemented at the multi-duty dry plant of Cable Sands Limited at Bunbury. This paper describes the loops for kV control on a rougher high tension roll machines (HTR). The options available are product grade control and ratio control using the JKMRC CNC gauges, which measure the percent conductors in a stream. The purpose of control is to stabilise the circuit operation against disturbances such as atmospheric and feed disturbances.

A process was developed, on a laboratory scale, for the removal of iron oxides from Weipa pisolitic bauxite. The technique involves the chemical reduction ofthe iron oxides by carbon, followed by selective removal of the iron species by acid leaching or chlorination.To remove more than 90 per cent of the iron it is necessary to reduce the iron oxides substantially to iron metal by heating the bauxite, pre-calcined at 650-800°C, with reactive carbon at 1040-1100°C. Reduction proceeds via the intermediate formation of hercynite (FeO.Al2O3) and difficulties have been encountered in reducing hercynite formed under less favourable reduction conditions.Following reduction, efficient selective removal of iron species is readily effected by acid leaching using dilute hydrochloric acid at 100°C, or chlorination at 500-750°C using Cl2, Cl2/N2, or Cl2/N2/CO mixtures.After removal of unreacted carbon, the final products contain 0·5-1.0 per cent Fe203 and 87-92 per cent Al203.

Numerous supergene manganese oxide deposits are developed inSouth China as a result of weathering of a thick sequence of Paleozoic marine Mn-bearing sedimentary rocks, consisting mainly of limestones, cherts and black shales that were intensely folded and faulted due to multiple episodes of tectonism since the late Triassic. The ore minerals are dominantly pyrolusite, cryptomelane, nsutite, lithiophorite and braunite. The supergene manganese ores contain Mn ranging from 20 to 44 wt per cent; manganese oxide deposits derived from cherts and black shales also contain recoverable levels of Co, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn. 40Ar/39Ar dating of potassium-bearing manganese oxides reveals that extensive supergene manganese ore formation started at least in the earliest Miocene and persisted to the Present. Ages of the deposits show a close correlation to tectonic stability, with the oldest in tectonically quiescent areas and the youngest in active areas that have subjected to continuous uplift and thus significant denudation. The prolonged wet and hot climate since Oligocene and the balance between weathering and erosion, which is parameter to the tectonic stability, are the ultimate controls on the formation and distribution of South China supergene manganese oxide deposits. All previous attempts to cut rock in boring by means of revolving steel cutters have failed, chiefly in consequence of the mis-shapen teeth grinding the rock and themselves simultaneously, until, after a very few revolutions, the points of the cutters were so worn that it was impossible to force them into the strata. The diamond drilling plant being cumbrous, complicated, and costly, and seeing that fully 70 per cent of the boring generally needed is in what is known as the" milder strata," it will be readily understood that much of the work done will not pay a dividend on the outlay, so great is the cost of removal, the wear and tear of the machinery, and the loss of diamonds. The Calyx Drill, however, invented by Mr. F. Harley Davis, has been constructed so as to overcome these difficulties, and will penetrate quickly and .at a low cost this 70 per cent. of the milder strata. The Drill has taken ten years' hard work and thought to bring it to its present state of perfection, and it will now drill with steel cutters the 70 per cent of the work performed by the diamond drills at a greater speed and at about one third the cost of the latter.The utility of the diamond drill for certain work is undeniable, but it cannot by any means be described as a machine of general popular usefulness that is to say, it is quite beyond the reach of the great masses of mankind.

Mining in Western Australia places significant economic and environmental responsibility on Government and the mining industry. Groundwater abstraction is regulated by the Department of Water. The Department has recently issued a guideline for Pilbara mines, and this paper focuses on the Pilbara for its examples and studies. The guideline is intended to form the basis for developing a statewide policy, consistent with reporting and assessment policy.With rapid expansion of the mining industry between 2005 and 2008, the groundwater resources in the Pilbara region of the State are under increasing pressure. Significant new management and regulatory issues arising recently include: cumulative impact assessment; disposal of dewatering excess by discharge, sharing or reinjection; life-of-mine approvals and closure planning; closure water quality including metals concentration in pit lakes; and in situ leaching mining methods and their impacts on regional water resources (and change of State Government Policy with respect to uranium mining).

The Mogalakwena Platinum Mine in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex is Anglo American PlatinumÆs only open cast operation exploiting the Platreef. The Platreef, which extends along the basal contact of the Bushveld Complex, is geologically and mineralogically a much more complex orebody than the Merensky and UG-2 reefs. Changes in the footwall and the genesis of the Platreef translate into a number of rock types being present. These rock types vary in hardness and recovery potential and present challenges to metallurgical staff trying to optimise the concentrator. A true understanding of the implications of treating these rock types is required if the maximum value from this orebody is to be obtained.In order to more accurately forecast production and incorporate ore variation in the mine plan and comminution and flotation circuits, a geometallurgical approach to managing the operation has been used and is being further developed.CITATION:Schouwstra, R, De Vaux, D, Muzondo, T and Prins, C, 2013. The role of a project metallurgist is diverse and covers input into the resource definition, mining studies, metallurgical test program development, process engineering and plant design, cost estimate preparation and financial analysis aspects of project feasibility studies. Mining project schedule and cost overruns can often be attributed to cutting short metallurgical test work, engineering and cost estimating leading up to commitment to development. In a significant number of cases this may result from the lack of understanding and commitment by the project proponent to the requisite metallurgical and processing studies required during the various pre-commitment stages of a mining project. Metallurgical test work, process development, engineering and cost estimating requirements for each stage of pre-commitment development are described together with a summary of the ongoing role of the project metallurgist during detailed engineering and commissioning of a process plant.

Upward pressure on all mining operations is coming from the triple bottom line. To some extent this is being offset by the rise in mineral prices, but this may or may not continue. The other serious issue facing all companies is the replacement of economic reserves as exploration levels over the past decade continued to decline in line with falling mineral prices. In order to underpin the sustainability of the mining industry it is necessary to continue to reduce cost, reduce the mine environmental footprint, whilst increasing community benefit. At the same time it is imperative that we increase the economic reserves. The highest risk is in adding new mineral discoveries as the strike rate for economic discovery decreases. Gekko Systems Pty Ltd recognises that the most simple and risk averse route to increasing economic reserves is to reduce cut-off grade in the mine, thereby bringing formerly uneconomic reserves into the economic category. We have been developing a new process flow sheet which embodies the triple bottom line and the issue of economic replacement of reserves. This paper describes this flow sheet and presents four examples where this concept is/can be applied to bring about triple bottom line benefits. Sustainability can only be assured if we are the ones in control of our environment, costs and reserves.

Large mining operations need equipment that consistently performs as expected. The most effective way of ensuring this is to have a defined life cycle with an optimised maintenance strategy. The determination of this life cycle is an economic decision, influenced by the construction and utilisation of the equipment. An effective life cycle costing (LCC) tool must be able to process the many variable factors involved.Many factors influence the costs that are associated with a machine over its life. The most variable of these are the costs of maintaining the equipment. Maintenance costs are dependant not only on the utilisation of the machine, but also on the strategy that has been developed to support the machine through its life. A combination of supplier support, component changes, regular servicing and unscheduled maintenance needs to be modelled, based on a variety of drivers. Traditionally spreadsheets have been used to model these factors, but the increasing complexity of the situation can make spreadsheets unwieldy and difficult to manage. A database solution that breaks each activity into its constituent components, links them to an associated mine plan driver and then aggregates the result is the ideal tool to provide a time based cost profile. The evaluation of a number of scenarios, representing different maintenance strategies/life cycles can be rapidly undertaken. Auditability through inbuilt tools is required to provide easy tracing of data. Use of the host company's account structure allows for reporting against the standard chart of accounts.

The passage of chloroform vapour in a carrier of oxygen through two nickel sulphide ores heated to 380°C converted the nickel to the water soluble chloride form. In one ore the nickel (2·75 per cent) was presentas violarite ((Ni, Fe)3S4) whereas in the second it was present as pentlandite, ((Fe, Ni)9S8) (4·9 per cent Ni).A similar technique was utilized to convert nickel in nickeliferous laterites (1·6 per cent Ni) into a soluble chloride using town gas instead of oxygen as a carrier.With both techniques greater than 90 per cent extraction was achieved.

Blasts should be designed so as to maximise the percentage of charges which shoot to a free face (Le, to a pronounced rock/air interface).Free faces should be rough, parallel and reasonably near to blastholes and, very importantly, concavely·biplanar relative to the charges (see Fig. 6b). The presence of biplanar free faces requires that each charge fragments and detaches its quota of the burden rock before the detonation of:1. later-firing adjacent charges in single-row blasts, and2. dependent charges in multi-row blasts.In multi-row blasts, biplanar faces are best achieved:1. by drilling blastholes on equilateral triangular grids,2. by selecting a VI, V2 or V3 initiation sequence, and3. by using down-the-hole delays.Biplanar faces start to be created only when the conventional value of effective blasthole spacing/effective burden distance (Se/Be) increases beyond about 2.4. Values of Se/Be less than about 2.4 result in planar free faces. Where biplanar faces are created, conventional values of Se/Be are invalid and appreciably greater than real values of Se/Be.

Laboratory induced polarization measurements were made on representative samples of concentrated sulphide ores from three environments in New South Wales Comparisons were made with the membrane polarization exhibited by an argillaceous sandstone. The sulphide samples showed a strong polarization effect, the magmtude of whIch depended directly on the conductivity of tlIe pore electrolyte.

Infrared spectroscopy has the ability to accurately measure mineralogy of drill cores, allowing for better spatial characterisation of iron ore deposits and potentially improving the prediction of key mining and processing parameters at the deposit scale. BHP Billiton Iron Ore is using infrared spectroscopic drill core logging to provide fast and accurate mineralogy for diamond cores and reverse circulation (RC) samples.Mineralogy can be predicted from infrared spectroscopic drill core data with errors on estimates ranging from six to 12 weight per cent. The error on the clay estimates is significantly lower than for hematite and goethite content estimates. This manuscript presents the results from a study on a bedded iron ore deposit, hosted in the Brockman iron formation, for which infrared spectroscopic data were collected on all of the diamond and RC drilling. Results show that these mineralogy estimates improve drill core logs, the geology model and the metallurgical block model.CITATION:Haest, M, Vitins, I and Hacket, A, 2013. BHP's two million tonne per annum nominal capacity Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant at Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia is based on FINMET¦¦ direct reduction technology. The FINMET¦¦ process produces direct reduced iron (DRI) by reacting fine iron ore with reformed natural gas in a series of fluid bed reactors and then hot briquetting this DRI into dense, high quality iron briquettes. The Port Hedland HBI project represents a major investment in the chemical processing of Australian minerals to higher value products prior to export to Asian markets. This paper describes the FINMET" process and technical aspects of the high-quality HBI product, and provides an update of the current status of the project.

Experimentally determined and theoretically explained phenomenon of zonal disintegration of rock around the development working brings about the radical changes in existing ideas about the mechanism of interaction rock massive with engineering constructions.The essence of the phenomenon consists in the fact, that forming of non-elastic deformations zone goes on by way of more intensive deformation and destruction of rock simultaneously in several zones, covering partially or fully output circuit and divided by zones of destructed rock. Under the influence of change of massive strained-deformational condition of depositional rock an accidental deviation of zones of supplementary expansion and compression of rock from the previous positions take place. One can observe multiplicational change of the outline, size and form of all disintegration zones in the time within the area of the working influence at massive. This phenomenon was named "fluctuation of zonal disintegration of sedimentary rock around development working".

Globally, private minerals companies considering the transition to a public company and entrepreneurs looking to create a new public company through, for example, an initial public offering or by a reverse takeover have many options. For companies with assets around the Pacific Rim, there are arguably five key stock/securities exchanges that actively promote international minerals company listings, and these are located in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom.Listing on any of these exchanges requires a range of technical, commercial, financial and legal documentation. Each exchange has specific rules and requirements for technical documentation to support the listing process. Once listed, each exchange also has specific rules for technical information to meet ongoing compliance requirements.
