Rock mass strength and brittleness generally have a significant impact on both cavability and fragmentation. Variability in these properties across a panel or block footprint is of particular interest because stronger units have the potential to significantly impact cave shape. This paper describes how FLAC3D™ was used to examine the impact of variability in rock mass properties on predicted cave performance to aid in assessing potential risks associated with the proposed design.A case study orebody was subdivided into a number of domains to reflect the heterogeneity of the rock mass at the scale of a proposed inclined cave. The results suggest that the presence of stronger units has the potential to impact cave shape significantly in the southern half of the cave footprint and could increase the potential for cave stalling at shallow depths. If this unit is stronger and less brittle than expected, an overhang is predicted to develop in the southern half of the inclined cave at depth. The effective hydraulic radius is significantly reduced due to the overhang in the south, and the cave could eventually stall at shallower depths in the north.CITATION:Garza-Cruz, T V and Pierce, M E, 2016. Design and operating conditions of large size mechanical flotation cells were evaluated by comparing them with actual operating conditions in a plant. The objective was to determine the time scale-up factor, typically based on empirical rules. Experiments were conducted on the rougher flotation circuit at Minera Escondida Ltd. The circuit consisted of self-aerated mechanical cells of 160 m3, arranged in six parallel banks with nine cells each. The rougher circuit flotation kinetics were evaluated from direct sampling and local mass balances around each cell of the bank. Adjusted overall mass balances were also developed. This information was used to fit different kinetic flotation models, and it was found that the rectangular distribution function was the most appropriate to describe the distributed rate constant for industrial operation. Then, a rougher flotation simulator was developed to describe the actual operation in terms of the operating variables (mass flowrate, solid percentage, feed grade) and the actual volumetric flowrate entering to each cell. In this study feed pulp samples were taken in parallel from the rougher circuit and were simultaneously floated in the laboratory. The kinetic behaviour was then modelled at a laboratory batch scale in order to determine the time scale-up factor between laboratory batch flotation data and industrial size flotation. The time scale-up factor observed for large sized cells, 160 m3, was found to be reasonably similar to those previously determined for self-aerated mechanical cells, but of lower size, operating at similar recoveries. In addition, the relative effect of mixing, between laboratory batch and an industrial flotation bank, was quantified by the parameter, separating the impact that kinetic and mixing changes have on the time scale-up factor. In general, the rougher flotation operation was found to reach the predicted metallurgical target, and the optimal separability criterion was also respected. The diagnostic generates information about the internal state of the process and helps to identify potential improvements for design, operation and control of the circuit.

As cities become more populated and the need for tunnelling increases, we continue to dig deeper urban tunnels in more challenging ground conditions. At the same time our expectations for durability and long-term performance are increasing.It has become increasingly apparent in recent years that repairing water leaks in tunnels can be very costly and unplanned infiltration can cause undesirable outcomes for long-term maintenance costs, structural durability and environmental impacts. For this reason, tunnel constructors are investing more time and effort upfront into drainage and waterproofing systems.Tunnel membrane systems are becoming accepted as a necessary part of tunnel construction, however the knowledge surrounding selection of appropriate systems, design detailing and installation methods has not increased at the same rate. Currently Australia relies heavily on International Standards from Europe and the United States with no immediate program in place to establish our own locally relevant industry standards.This paper gives an overview of where the industry in Australasia is heading in terms of adopting relevant standards. Current basic waterproof detailing options for drained and undrained tunnels with success and failure of various methods are also addressed. Finally we look at the Brisbane Airport Link as a case study for how tunnel waterproofing contract methods, design and installation issues are being addressed in context with recent projects including the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link in Sydney, Auckland Northern Gateway Tunnel, Eastlink Tunnel in Melbourne and Sydney City West Cable Tunnel.This paper’s primary objective is to propose guidelines for how tunnel waterproofing could be implemented on large infrastructure projects in the future and to map a path for preparing and introducing a ready to use document for selecting appropriate tunnel membrane and drainage systems whilst implementing detailing methods which are appropriate for local conditions.

Conventional hand drawn isopach maps of the cover of the Bulli Seam are too eomplex for use in the delineation of large domains of similar cover. Isopach maps prepared from trend surfaces fitted to the cover data are much simpler in form and so provide a convenient method of delineating broad domains of similar cover.

This paper examines some of the fundamental economics of mining - in particular, for optimisation studies, for production rate determination and for reserve estimates.It includes introductory discussion on the principles as to how economics drives mining investment decision-making, applicable to the optimising of pit shapes and production, or truck fleets, or any other part of the mine.The main part of this paper looks at the decision to start-up a mine and why the 'optimum' production rate to start-up a mine is not the point of lowest cost according to traditional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. The optimum production rate is usually substantially less than this rate. The paper recognises the difference between typical mining investments and investments in other industries that do not have the unique characteristics of mining and the problem of uncertainty resolution. It examines the marginal revenue effects, the marginal cost of capital and the value of a real option to expand pending uncertainty resolution as determinants of optimum initial production rates.The final part of this paper looks at applying these principles to renewable and non-renewable resources. It examines mine life and reserve estimates from an economic perspective.

A belt press filter (BPF) handbook containing practical information for the reference of plant designers and operators has been created as part of Australian Coal Association Research Program project C23040. The handbook combines research and experience with newer generations of equipment and circuitry. BPFs are increasingly finding application in the dewatering of thickener underflow tailings slurries due to changing environmental regulations, difficulty obtaining tailings storage facility approvals and limited water availability. Sources of BPF inefficiency and low availability stem from a lack of understanding of the key operational parameters that affect their performance. This lack of understanding typically leads to increased operational expenditure due to suboptimal reagent dose rates and increased maintenance costs, or decreases in plant availability due to excessively high filter product water contents and equipment failure. It is essential for the continued economically competitive operation of Australian coal handling and preparation plants that complex factors affecting BPF operational performance are clearly defined and understood. Installation and operation handbooks are often provided to sites with new installations, but these manuals are manufacturer- or even model-specific and are often focused on mechanical maintenance. The handbook identifies industry ‘best practice’ and improvements developed by other sites, such as extra spray bars, air system bleed valves, guarding designs, feed and filtrate protection screens and roller tensioning systems. Equations to predict optimum operating conditions – such as free moisture, belt tension and reagent dose rates, with simple feed-specific variable inputs – have been developed from site-specific test work. The correlations developed provide a benchmark for plants to attempt to achieve. This provides operators and process engineers with a tool to explain BPFs and assist them in optimising the performance of BPF dewatering plants of both contemporary and less modern design.CITATION:Mathewson, D and Eschebach, D, 2015. An assessment of methods currently available for the accurate determination of low concentrations of platinum in ores and mineral concentrates indicated that prior treatment of the sample by fire assay procedures is necessary. To enable rapid determinations to be carried out, instrumental methods applied to the metallic bead produced from the fire assay treatment have been evaluated, considering maximum flexibility for concentration variations, minimum chemical operations, and adequate sensitivity.Atomic absorption spectrometry proved suitable, giving solution determination limits of 0·4 p.p.m. Pt, 0·1 p.p.m. Pt, or 0·06 p.p.m. Pt under various extraction conditions using aqueous and organic agents. Thesedetermination limits related to 1 assay ton of sample (32·67 g) produced easily readable and accurate readings within the range of platinum contents (0·03-2·0 p.p.m.) of economic interest in deposit evaluation and prospecting. The technique shows promise of also being suitable for determination of palladium and gold.

OxianaÆs Sepon Copper Operation (part of the combined Sepon Gold and Copper Operation) is located in Savannaket Province, in southern central Lao PDR. The site is relatively remote, being some five hours inland from the Laos/Thailand border crossing on the Mekong River. The copper processing plant was designed to treat 1.3 Mtpa ROM ore to produce 60 000 tpa of copper cathode. Commissioning of the processing plant was completed in mid March 2005 with ramp up completed in January 2006 with 5260 tonnes of cathode harvested in this month. The focus of this paper is on SeponÆs unique grinding circuit. The entire grinding circuit is operated at highly acidic conditions, adding a number of different operational issues over and above those normally associated with grinding circuits. It became evident early in the ramp up, that reaching design mill throughput of 170 dry tonnes per hour with the original design would be challenging, coupled with the realisation that ceramic grinding media consumption had been underestimated. In order to lift the overall throughput of the processing plant, a significant continuous improvement process has been implemented within the grinding circuit to lift this key unitÆs production capacity. This presentation will focus on the key areas that have been addressed in the 12 month ramp up period and highlight areas for future work. Results to date have shown this improvement process to be very successful, with throughput rates in excess of 200 tph regularly achieved.

Indosinian (T) orogeny amalgamated the Mongolia-Xingan fold zone, the North China continent, the Yangtzi platform and the SE China fold zone into a unified continent. The early to middle Yanshanian (J-K1) orogeny created a Cordilleran type active continental margin in East Asia, reactivated the consolidated East China continent, and generated a large amount of granitoids, calc-alkaline volcanics and W, Sn, Mo, Cu, Au, and U ore deposits. The late Yanshanian (K2) orogeny began a transition to the western Pacific type continental margin. A tensional environment led to the development of peralkaline magmatism and tne formation of continental basins with red beds. The Himalayan (Tr-Q) orogeny was characterised by a backarc spreading and rifting regime. The dominant magmatism was continental basaltic.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (CNR) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three locations, separated by many kilometres. The ore is stockpiled at these locations, according to an in-house ore classification system (based on grade and source) and then trucked to the crushing and screening plant at Koolyanobbing. Lump and fines products are railed to Esperance for ship loading and export to Asian customers. CNR prides itself on the relatively low inter-shipment grade variability of the products. The Koolyanobbing crusher is fed using a daily blend plan, generated to maintain lump and fines product grades within acceptable tolerance ranges around targets. Achieving low variability requires predicting lump and fines grades as accurately as practical from the estimated head grades of the ROM ores potentially going into the blend. The grade prediction model may be either a direct prediction of crushed lump and fines grades and lump percentage, or be split into two stages: the bias between blasthole estimated head grade and crusher head grade and then the lump-fines algorithm for splitting the head grade between lump and fines products. The lump-fines algorithm comprises the percentage of lump and the difference between the lump and fines grades. We describe a weighted least squares (WLS) regression model for predicting crusher grades and lump proportion from the estimated head grade for Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3, Mn and S. The method is applied to CNR production data, where the regression model explains approximately 60 per cent of the variance in the crushed ore grade, for both lump and fines. A further small but significant improvement in prediction can be achieved by including the ore classification data in the model. The regression errors exhibit strong positive serial correlation, indicating trends in grade error across multiple blend records. To compensate for the longer-term error, an exponentially smoothed model was developed and applied to the daily grade blend errors. This gave an increase in the longer-term variance explained and therefore an improvement in grade prediction.

The Ministry of Commerce has been carrying out an evaluation of the resources of the Northwest Nelson region. In part this was to revisit the issues covered in the earlier proposal to close part of Northwest Nelson to mining under section 24 of the Mining Act (1971) initiated in 1990. In addition, the option of using GIS to integrate a variety of spatial data sets to aid policy formulation could be tested. The Northwest Nelson assessment would be a useful trial. The subsequent national park proposal provided a major impetus to the project and resulted in the scope of the study being broadened to include all energy and minerals resources.

The proper selection of a coal for a particular use depends on knowledge of fundamental data concerning the coals that offer, particularly their type and rank. Type of coal depends on the nature of the original plants and the environment in which they accumulated.Rank reflects the subsequent metamorphism of the coal, and is of two kinds-physical rank and chemical rank.INTRODUCTIONIn the different coalfields of the Commonwealth of Australia there occur many different kinds of coal which provide the coal-research worker with a wide range of material, but to the fuel technologist they represent complex problems in utilization.In the past it has been common practice to instal coal-using equipment of a design based on plant used in large industrial centres of other countries and then search for supplies of suitable coal. This has led to the transportation of coal mainly from New South Wales to other States, which have inadequate supplies of coal suitable for use in the equipment they have installed. However, modern economy and industrial practice demand local resources of coal for the development of industry, transport and domestic services, and a change in the old order is rapidly taking place. Technologists and engineers are now faced with the problem of designing and installing equipment to use whatever kind of coal is available in local coalfields.Much has been accomplished in this direction and important investigations are at present being carried out, but there still remains a wide field of problems for research.In planning and carrying out investigations into coal utilization it is essential that fundamental data and knowledge should be available and that its significance should be appreciated.

The current status of battery collection and recycling schemes in Australia are explored in light of current developments in product stewardship and increasing pressure to decrease materials going to landfill by originating equipment manufacturers. Used consumer batteries, both single cycle and rechargeable contain a mixture of valuable metals and potentially toxic materials that may become a resource/revenue stream to offset the cost of disposal/recycling. Although the volume of batteries discarded in Australia is modest compared to other global population centres, the expected increase in battery use with increasing equipment portability and future developments in the automotive industry, provide an opportunity to recycle. The requirements for a battery recycling facility in Australia and the most promising processing platforms that may exploit the resource with enough flexibility to cope with battery developments and market trends, are explored.

This paper describes the method of extracting sill pillars within the underground operation from under unconsolidated mullock fill at the Cracow Gold Mine. This pillar recovery method was initially successfully used to recover sill pillars at Crusader Mine, Western Australia in 2001. Globally significant resources have been sterilised due to the placement of loose rock fill above crown pillars and within adjacent stopes. The method described here offers significant opportunities to increase recovery of sill pillar recoveries.The royal orebody sill pillars at Cracow Gold Mine form a significant resource. Extraction of these pillars needed to be undertaken with minimal ore dilution and maximum ore recovery. The application that was selected to consolidate the loose mullock fill above each pillar used an injection grouting process (Minova FB200).Cracow Gold Mine mining method is bottom up bench mining. The pillars were left within the orebody to allow for stoping to commence whilst the decline was being developed. Due to the remainder of the orebody being extracted the only access to consolidate the backfill was from the sill pillar extraction level. Numerous problems were encountered and overcome from product selection and trial, system of injection to extraction.This pillar recovery process achieved a 95 per cent recovery of the sill pillar compared with an estimated 60 per cent typical for other mining options.CITATION:Potts, L, Mutton, V and Joyce, D, 2012. The reverse flotation of Itabirite iron ore is typically performed after a desliming step in which most of the sub-10 µm particles are removed. This is done to limit processing problems such as poor flotation recovery of SiO2 due to slime coatings and increased slurry viscosities, unmanageable froths and increased losses of hematite particles due to entrainment. However, the rejection of ultrafine particles contributes to large losses in iron recovery and may contribute to the instability of tailings dams. The aim of this study is to decouple the effects of ultrafine particles in the pulp and froth phases to better understand the processing capabilities of the fines fraction. The flotation test work was performed in a special-purpose continuously operated laboratory flotation cell that has a deep froth section to simulate plant-scale froth conditions. Five conditions of fines addition were investigated at three different froth heights and a solids concentration of 50 per cent. The behaviour of the pulp and the froth were decoupled using froth stability and froth recovery tests. This showed that, even though there is an exponential increase in froth stability at increasing fines quantities, the performance of the pulp has the overriding effect on the overall SiO2 recovery. Pulp zone, froth zone and overall SiO2 recoveries showed that overall recoveries increased by about 3.6 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content. This meant a large increase of 20 per cent in SiO2 recovery when going from undeslimed to deslimed feed. This was driven largely by increases in the pulp zone recoveries, which were about 4 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content. The froth recoveries, on the other hand, decreased by between 0.75 per cent and 2.5 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content, depending on froth height. This paper explores further insights into iron ore flotation processing at different slimes concentrations.

Geochemical data on Australian granites and pegmatites, and the mineral components of these rocks, are compared with that obtained in similar studies in the U.S.S.R. and elsewhere.The geochemical character of tin granites and the trace chemistry of their component minerals, particularly biotites, have some significance as ore guides in prospecting for tin.The primary geochemical dispersion of tin can be readily tested both in the laboratory and field by colourimetric methods, after volatilization with ammonium iodide, using modifications of the method described by Wood (1958).Secondary dispersions of tin in residual soils or alluvia can likewise be readly tested by rapid colourimetric methods in the field, but simple hydraulic methods, handling larger sample volumes, give reliable outlines of dispersion patterns.INTRODUCTIONThe search for tin ores, whether lode or placer in type, is usually directed on genetic grounds to country within or adjoining acid intrusives.A long established means of prospecting is to test samples for cassiterite by panning or other hydraulic separation.These methods can be used on crushed lode material or the natural materials from placers.With the advent of new techniques for extraction and for colourimetric analysis for tin (Wood, 1958 and Ross and White, 1961) a means is available for rapid analysis of materials not susceptible to quantitative testing by hydraulic methods because of the fine sizings of cassiterite or the occurrence of tin structurally held in minerals. The new methods thus opened up the field of tin prospecting by extending the search for ore guides to genetically associated rocks and minerals, wall ror-ks of veins and a wider range of superficial deposits.

In recent years, due to advances in designing of various magnet assemblies, a wide range of magnetic materials with different properties can be concentrated. Jalal Abad iron ore beneficiation plant, which is located in Iran, Kerman province, is currently producing iron ore concentrate with the capacity of 0.8 Mt/a by having medium intensity magnetic separators (MIMS) with rougher and cleaner stages that finally leads to the production of an iron concentrate with the Fe grade of about 65 per cent. In this plant, the rougher tailings directly goes to the thickener as the final tailings and cleaner tailings feeds to the ball mill for regrinding. Since some hematite particles with weak magnetic properties cannot be recovered from only these two stages of magnetic separation, the obtained tailings from this concentration plant has approximately an iron grade of 25 per cent to 27 per cent. Accordingly, laboratory processing tests were conducted on the obtained representative sample of the final tailings. Based on the experimental results performed on final tailings, a new magnetic drum separator with a specific magnetic assembly was designed that could finally lead to product with iron grade range of 58 per cent to 60 per cent with relative and total weight per cent of 8.6 per cent and 3.86 per cent. Finally, it could be concluded that feeding of magnetite particles to the existing drum separators, due to their high magnetic field intensity, cannot efficiently lead to improvement of the grade of concentrate. Therefore, pilot magnetic separation tests were done on the final concentrate for evaluation of product upgrading probability. Consequently, by increasing another stage of cleaning and by decreasing the magnetic field intensity, the final product grade could be enhanced from 65 per cent to 67 per cent.

Effects of DA as a Grinding Aid on Selective Grinding of Low-Grade Bauxite Effects of DA (a copolymer of acrylic acid and acrylamide) as a grinding aid on selective grinding of low-grade bauxite were investigated in this study. The addition of DA into the grinding system enhanced the selectivity of grinding and increased the A/S ratio in the coarse fraction of ground product, leading to improved throughput of grinding mills and alumina recovery. The results showed that DA decreased the viscosity of slurry significantly and hence improved grinding efficiency due to low viscosity at a high slurry concentration. Both the hydrogen bond formation and chemical adsorption existed between DA and the surface of bauxite particles. The adsorption of DA on the surface of bauxite could decrease stress needed for crack initiation and extending during grinding, prevent new-born crack surfaces from rejoining, and promote the expansion of the cracks.

The concept of a magnetic hydro-cyclone is undeveloped, possibly because studies by Bragard (1965) and the Royal School of Mines in London (Robinson, 1965) were not encouraging. Its role for the concentration of ironsands is attractive in that the classifying effect within a hydrocyclone may be comparable to the classifying effect in the gravity concentration of ironsands, and thus two steps may be achieved in one. Furthermore it should be a very simple and cheap process. The idea has been explored intermittently since 1976 but more energetically since the offering of a magnetic hydro-cyclone thickener by Boxmag Rapid (1983). This paper summarises the development and test work which are detailed elsewhere (Fricker, 1984).
