The Greenland Group, Westland, can be characterised with respect to environmental issues by the application of a GIS database (DAME), and specific sampling campaigns. Waters draining gold mineralised areas have a distinctive chemistry characterised by neutral pH and arsenic as a trace element. The acid neutralising capacity (ANC) from carbonates usually exceeds the maximum potential acidity (MPA) from sulphides resulting in circum-neutral pH. These waters are readily distinguishable from waters draining coal mine related areas, which commonly have low pH (~4) and low As concentrations (~0.1 ppm). In contrast, dissolved arsenic mobilised from Greenland Group historic gold mining areas is up to 2.4 ppm. This As mobilisation is controlled by the secondary As mineral, scorodite (FeAsO2+2H2O). Maximum dissolved As concentrations increase with increasing pH, corresponding to the increasing solubility of scorodite with increasing pH. Dissolved As is attenuated by dilution, precipitation of scorodite, and/or adsorption to iron oxyhydroxide (HFO). Adsorption to HFO is an important attenuation mechanism in and adjacent to many mine sites. HFO is abundant at mine sites where pyrite was abundant in fresh rock, such as where the mineralised zone is dominated by disseminated pyrite. Pyrite, and resulting HFO, are relatively rare where mineralisation occurred as well-defined quartz veins. Localised HFO occurs also where ankerite oxidises in host rocks. Arsenic output flux (ca. 25 g/day) from historic gold mine sites is commonly less than the natural background flux from mineralised rocks (>5000 g/day).

Capricorn Copper Pty Ltd (CCPL) are operating the Capricorn Copper Mine located at Gunpowder, Queensland. As current holder of the environmental authority for the site, CCPL have obligations to rehabilitate areas of the mine that are no longer operational and have the potential to cause/contribute to environmental harm. CCPL sought a voluntary Transitional Environmental Program (TEP) to provide an agreed program of works to cap and rehabilitate the former Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility. The voluntary TEP contained conditions that were required to be met, to reduce the potential for environmental harm from the facility. The former Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility commenced use in the early 1970’s, and is an unlined valley in-fill structure, contemporary in design compared with other such approved structures of the era. The decommissioned Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility, now known as the Old Tailings Storage Facility (Old TSF), has been a legacy source of contamination due to the existing capping not meeting modern cover criterion, and allowing oxidisation and infiltration to the underlying acid forming tailings resulting in Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) from the facility. A cover design for the Old TSF, and other mine waste storages onsite that required clay capping, had been proposed by previous operators. Under the TEP cover design phase, it was identified that a key constraint was the lack of significant quantities of low permeability clay onsite. The lack of available clay prompted the consideration of alternate lining materials for the Old TSF, with a Bituminous Geomembrane Liner (BGM) being adopted as the preferred alternative. The BGM compared favourably with clay-based materials on seepage analysis, and led to other benefits by eliminating the need for borrowing clay off site, reducing the site’s environmental footprint, and reducing construction time. The BGM cover system on the Old TSF is being monitored with the intent to use this as a case study to confirm expected performance, enabling the cover design to potentially be adopted on the remainder of the site’s mine waste storages that require capping.

Rheological Behaviour of Clay-Rich Gangue Mineral Dispersions During Hydrometallurgical Treatment Alumino-silicate minerals invariable may present an intractable challenge in hydrometallurgical operations employed in low grade nickel, copper and gold ore leaching or high level nuclear waste (HLNW) processing. The interactions and reactivity of alumino-silicate clay gangue minerals such as muscovite/sericite, chlorite, kaolinite and smectite under acidic (eg pH <3) or alkaline (pH >13) conditions can have a striking impact on the particle interactions. These may manifest in undesirable pulp rheology, poor extraction rates and challenges in the subsequent "handleability" and solid-liquid separation processes (eg dewatering). In the present work, a review of investigations involving the interfacial chemistry, interactions and rheological behaviour of aqueous dispersions of mica-group, layered alumino-silicate clay (muscovite / sericite) and chalcocite minerals as a function of pH in the range 2 - 9 and time at 25¦C, is presented. Particle zeta potential, reflecting interfacial chemistry, indicated a strong pH-history and particle volume fraction dependency. Pristine particles' zeta potentials measured from high to low pH indicated mineral-specific isoelectric point (iep) at pH range 2 - 5. Subsequent measurements from low to high pH showed pH-history dependency with iep shift to higher pH values, the extent of which also depended upon particle volume fraction and aging time. Pulp pH-mediated particle interactions revealed by shear yield stress analysis displayed a bifurcation behaviour and good compliance with DLVO theory. The maximum pulp yield values occurred at the iep whilst weak rheology was observed where the magnitude of the particle zeta potential was greatest. The pivotal role played by both pulp chemistry and suspension conditions in regulating the particle interactions and concomitant rheological behaviour is highlighted. The implications of the findings with regards to clay-base pulps' handleability and its control during aqueous processing are discussed.

Mine waste rock is unavoidable in the recovery of ore by open pit mining methods. Effective management of waste rock movement covers the removal and placement of the waste rock, generally in a surface dump in the most cost-effective way while satisfying the long-term environmental expectations. Since the 1960s, there has been significant research carried out into planning of ore movement from open pit mines such that the overall net present value (NPV) of the project can be maximised. Currently, several software packages are available to achieve this task as a common practice within the mining industry. However, planning of mine waste rock movement is still achieved manually, as the available software does not consider optimal waste rock movement and dump design. This paper describes a tool to optimise waste rock placement, which minimises the haulage cost while creating environmentally friendly waste rock dumps through selective placement and encapsulation of the reactive waste rock in the dump. The embedded methodology in this tool has been developed based on the mixed integer programming (MIP) modelling technique to optimise the waste rock movement. The methodology provides an easily-manipulated and fully-automatic tool for professionals to complete waste rock dump scheduling in four main steps: data input, model construction, model computation and solution retrieval. The application of the new tool into a real case project in this paper shows that it can determine economically and environmentally optimised waste rock dump schedules in an acceptable time frame.CITATION:Fu, Z, Li, Y, Topal, E and Williams, D J, 2015. Northparkes Mines commenced production in 1994 and the mine has significant reserves to allow operation into the future. There are a number of potential future concentrator feed sources with variable sulfide mineralogy and grades.In February 2012 a comprehensive flotation survey was conducted to allow mass balancing and evaluate the operation of the flotation circuit. A rudimentary, copper element only, unsized flotation simulator was developed to evaluate high level potential for optimisation and improvement. In 2013 this flotation model was expanded to produce a mineral based, floatability component model to estimate the effect of future concentrator feed source on metallurgical performance. This revised model allows various circuit configurations to be simulated to provide a high level blueprint for the long-term planning to maximise performance.This paper provides a review of the process followed to develop the model, including an analysis into the mineral floatability component model and its calibration against plant operations. Sampling errors result from heterogeneities within the lot under study. Within a rock mass in situ heterogeneity results in the geological nugget effect, which accounts for most of the natural variability. In broken rock, constitution and distribution heterogeneities are important. A major result of the constitution heterogeneity is the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) which is the smallest residual error that can be achieved. It cannot be eliminated, but can be minimised and refl ects the fact that the broken rock sampling process is never completely free of error. Together with other sampling errors, FSE contributes to the total nugget effect. The FSE for a sampling protocol can be evaluated using the so-called Gy equation. Its practical applications to low-grade gold ores have often been unsuccessful due to problems linking the FSE and minimum sampling mass and the defi nition of key parameters such as the liberation diameter. Well-designed sample protocols minimise the total sampling error and hence the nugget effect. Reduction of the nugget effect is a key requirement for all sampling programs whether related to exploration and resource evaluation, metallurgical test sampling, grade control or metallurgical plant sampling. This contribution reviews the relationship between heterogeneity, FSE and nugget effect in gold deposits; and emphasises the need for FSE management throughout the mine value chain.

Stream sediment geochemical analyses were collated from open-file mining company reports and assembled in the REGCHEM computerised database at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited. The database operates on an IBM-compatible PC microcomputer using an application programmed in dBASE IV and termed GEOEXPL. By August 1992, data for 6383 stream sediment samples from 6335 different sites in the Coromandel Peninsula region (Hauraki Goldfield) were entered, giving a total of 29 292 separate elemental analyses. Preliminary statistical analysis using PROBPLOT on a set of data collected by AMOCO from the Mahakirau-Whangapoua area shows that these data are a complex mix of subpopulations related to mineralisation and different source rock types. Thresholds of 37 ppm copper, 31 ppm lead, 112 ppm zinc, and 2.3 ppm molybdenum, defmed by arithmetic models for the combined data set, separate the individual element sets into 'first order anomalous/lesser anomalous and background' subpopulations as follows: copper five per cent/95 per cent, lead five per cent/95 per cent, zinc one per cent/99 per cent, and molybdenum 15 per cent/85 per cent.

In the last 30 years, human appropriation of global renewable resources has accelerated to the point where 35 per cent of the earthÆs land surface is now in managed agro-ecosystems, consumptive water use consumes between 50 per cent and 85 per cent of freshwater supply and 60 per cent of ecosystem services are utilised in an unsustainable manner. There are virtually no landscapes in which renewable resources are not already fully allocated among different economic and environmental uses. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognised that water availability issues do not exist in isolation but are linked with the related environmental issues of biodiversity preservation, the carbon cycle, soil degradation, and energy use and supply. It is against this background that the sustainable management of water in mining is increasingly developing a strategic viewpoint where water is viewed as a resource within an interconnected landscape, having economic, environmental and social value and providing a range of environmental services in the provision of public and private goods. This paper explores the issues associated with sustainable management of water in mining from a strategic viewpoint. The cumulative impacts of multiple water users, both within and outside the mining sector, is increasingly threatening the security of supply for all users. To quantitatively assess the ætrueÆ value of water it is necessary to: Better understand the science of ecosystem functioning and how human actions impact on environmental processes. Develop appropriate policy, finance and governance structures to support innovative programs that preserve ecosystem function and services (including market based instruments). Apply knowledge as interventions across landscapes in ways that maximise benefits and minimise unintended consequences taking into account differences in the value of water among sectors. A strategic viewpoint of water management relies on knowledge to guide decision making that has been acquired at a range of scales from mine site to mining region. This knowledge must be based on rigorous science, sound data and syntheses of different types of information. Strategic management of water resources will better position the industry in terms of understanding the risks posed by complex, interlinked environmental issues that are increasingly impacting on future access to land and renewable resources, including water, thereby ensuring miningÆs future social licence to operate.

The legislative operating environment, or the mineral regime, that a country has to offer is one of the key determinants that a company wanting to invest in an area takes into account in formulating its investment decision.   The New Zealand Government recognises this and the importance of getting the regime right in order to provide for continuing investment in mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand . In recent years, the Government has given considerable attention to developing legislation which provides for investment to take place; for those making the investments to have a stable, fair and open investment environment with government intervention only when considered absolutely necessary because other approaches are not working; and for the people of New Zealand to know that investment must meet acceptable health and safety standards and have acceptable impact on the environment. Also of key importance is having a clearly defined mining regime which includes rules on how to obtain a permit and rules in respect of ongoing permit compliance, rights to develop a mineral resource and permit conditions (in particular, the royalty regime). In New Zealand , these matters will all be addressed in what are referred to as 'minerals programmes'.   The Crown Minerals Act 1991, which is the legislation governing the allocation and management of permits for Crown owned minerals, requires that the Minister of Energy prepare minerals programmes. Minerals programmes establish the policies, procedures and provisions that the Minister shall follow in exercising his or her functions and powers under the Crown Minerals Act. Minerals programmes set out the principal reasons for and against adopting these policies, procedures and provisions and also restrictions on prospecting, exploration and mining for Crown owned minerals. Essentially minerals programmes define the mining regime for the minerals to which they apply, other than the taxation regime, environmental and health, safety provisions, land access matters and general matters concerning the investment climate.

Black Rock Cave (BRC) is a sublevel cave which was developed in 2018–2020 and has been in production since November 2020. BRC is part of the Mount Isa Mines complex and extracts a leached orebody comprising of high-grade chalcocite ore, situated below the historic Black Rock Open Cut workings. The mine is owned by Mount Isa Mines and operated under contract with PYBAR Mining Services. In 2021 a number of rockfalls occurred throughout the mine and were increasing in frequency. This culminated in a major rockfall on the decline in June 2021, after which the decision was made to withdraw all persons from the mine, initiate rehabilitation and conduct further investigations to deduce a safe method to provide long-term support. The rockfall investigations have shown that the corrosive nature of the highly leached rock mass can consume a split set in less than 18 months. A review of potential corrosion resistant ground support methods concluded that steel split sets have a safe lifespan of six months at BRC, and that all workings must have corrosion resistant support installed prior to exceeding the safe life of the friction bolts. The review recommended the use of 4 m cable bolts as the most suitable method of corrosion resistant support. This new support system, and the requirement to rehabilitate all mine workings within the leached orebody, had an impact to the schedule and an effect on both equipment and manning levels at BRC. Accelerated jumbo rehab allowed access to the production levels within two months of the rockfall. Cable bolting then followed the jumbo bolting in all leached areas. The direct impact has been ten months of reduced production, due to night shift closures of the decline to enable cable bolting. The impact to the mine has been minimised by the small flexible team that enabled the mine plan to change rapidly and often to accommodate the challenging conditions. In less than two months from the rockfall event, production had resumed. Within ten months of concluding that the mine required; full rehabilitation, a new support system and a full re-schedule, normal mining operations had restarted, with pre-event productions rates being achieved.

The Round Hill gold-scheelite deposit is located three kilometres from Macraes Flat and approximately 60 kilometres due north of Dunedin, New Zealand. A mining feasibility study is currently being undertaken on the deposit by BHP Minerals (New Zealand) Limited, who are the managers and operators of a Joint Venture with Home Reef Mining Limited. BHP has a 70 per cent equity in the project area.

Laboratory scale equipment was developed to recover zinc as oxide fume from granulated lead blast furnace slag. The cyclone furnace process is characterised by high treatment rates combined with continuous and independent operation.Results were sufficiently encouraging to warrant pilot plant scale trials being undertaken.INTRODUCTIONSince granulation of lead blast furnace slag started at Port Pirie in 1921 the stockpile of this material has increased to nearly 5 million tons which averages 17·5 per cent zinc by weight. Although a number of processes for recovering the zinc have been examined, economic considerations indicate that a slag fuming process is likely to be most suitable.In the conventional slag fuming process zinc is extracted by injecting pulverized coal and air into a molten slag bath. By maintaining a suitable air to coal ratio the oxidised zinc contained in the slag is reduced to metal. Volatilization of the zinc is followed by reoxidation in the gaseous phase with the addition of further air above the bath. The zinc oxide fume so produced is collected by normal gas cleaning methods.By examination of the thermodynamics of this process Bell, Turner, and Peters (1955) determined the zinc oxide activity of the slag over the duration of the fuming cycle.A combination of high temperature and high carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide ratio was found necessary for rapid zinc elimination.Since melting of the slag is an essential step in the slag fuming process, only two treatment methods appeared possible at Port Pirie until recently...

Double-stack trains in the United States date back to the early 1980s, starting about the time deregulation of the rail industry occurred. Freight rail became increasingly more competitive to trucking and barge or ship, and led to major investments in railroad infrastructure. Since most railroad tunnels in the United States were constructed between 1880 and 1930, they were not built tall enough to accommodate modern double-stack intermodal railcars. Therefore, as double-stack trains became the norm, existing tunnels became bottlenecks, and railroads wanted the tunnels made larger without impacting traffic. This need to increase the clearance while not impacting rail traffic launched a very specialised industry: the design and construction of replacement lining systems in existing tunnels.Several large multitunnel railroad clearance improvement projects have been completed in the country in the last decade, and they have all been done under ‘live track’ conditions. Live track conditions consist of work windows, often anywhere from four to 12 hours, that are provided to the contractor to complete the construction work. By the end of each work window, the tunnel must be secured so that the railroad can run trains.In addition to improving the clearance, these projects provided the railroads with an opportunity to improve the general condition of the tunnels, including structural, seepage, drainage and icing conditions. This paper discusses the design considerations, tunnel assessments and construction methods used for these live track railroad tunnel projects. The relationship between the maceral composition of coal and the strength of the coke produced from that coal has received a great deal of attention in recent years.Studies using two Bulli Seam coals, and blends of Bulli and Wongawilli Seam coals, from the IIIawarra Measures of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales were carried out.The optimum range of vitrinite was found to lie between 45 per cent and 60 per cent (mineral matter free).Above and below this vitrinite range coke strength deteriorated. Coke strength indices increased with rank, and the optimum vitrinite content increased with an increase in rank. These changes require confirmation as trends by testing a third level of rank. It was noted that vitrinite content decreased with an increase in the specific gravity of separation of the coal.Use of petrographic analyses will increase confidence in choosing coals for coking, provided the coals are well known. Such analyses offer the possibility of greater flexibility in coal purchases and the possibility of producing a marketable blend from coals, which have limited market potential. Critical base coals for blends can be conserved.Significantly more work is required before coal reserves can be utilized to optimum advantage. This work would require extension of the studies discussed in this paper and, in particular, the testing of a wider range of rank.

Portals to access underground mines are important infrastructure and their design requires careful consideration. Portals are generally expected to last for the life of the mine. Typically, the exposure of personnel and equipment is high, with many hundreds of movements through the portal per day. Consequently, the risk associated with geotechnical instability must be extremely low. Portals are often established from a boxcut. In areas where the weathering profile is well developed, the design and execution of the boxcut can involve significant effort, with the objective of minimizing the volume of the boxcut, whilst ensuring that conditions at the design depth are suitable for establishing a stable portal. Properly designed site investigations are a critical part of this process. Currently available portal design guidelines have not been updated for decades, however the equipment and ground support systems have changed significantly in recent years. Many mine portals have since been constructed in a relatively short time frame with success, often in challenging ground conditions using some of the more modern approaches to ground support. This is beneficial because delays in establishing a portal will generally delay other critical path activities, and lead to cost overruns.

The estimation of process plant head grade is not trivial and is a source of constant dispute within the mining industry. Grade estimates informed by the short term mine planning are frequently not reproduced by sampling the continuous flow of ore at the plant. Head grades are normally obtained by periodically sampling the continuous flow during a day or shift, and taking the average of the multiple increments collected. The standard error of this mean grade depends on the ore variability and the frequency (number) of aliquots extracted. The more increments are taken the higher is the precision on the calculated mean. Variographic experiments are normally used to map grade variability along a certain period of time and the extension variance is derived from this variogram. This experiment is time consuming, expensive and cumbersome. Mining industry personnel rarely apply this approach. Additionally, a temporal variogram can vary from day to day as different ores are mined along the life of the mine. This paper investigates a novel approach based on simulating the grades feeding the processing plant. In situ 3D grade models are built using geostatistical simulations. Grade spatial continuity and variability are reproduced in models that mimic the real deposit. These models are used in mine planning and scheduling transforming a 3D block model into an one dimensional string of values feeding the plant (one dimension flow). These grades have the statistical characteristics of the unknown real grades and can be sampled to emulate a variographic experiment. The results showed consistency and adequacy to estimate the sampling error (Gy, 1998 p 31) for various sampling intervals using the simulated grades. Also the results show a variographic experiment can change significantly from time to time, as ore changes and a selected sampling protocol can become obsolete if not adjusted for ore variability.CITATION:Costa, J F C L and Marques, D M, 2012. Clause 17 (1) of the Resource Management Act 1991 (duty to avoid, remedy, or mitigate adverse effects) provides the legislative basis for local authorities to impose resource consent conditions requiring land to be rehabilitated to approved uses during and after mining.

The moisture content of iron ore during handling can range from the dust extinction moisture at the point of arrival at the port to the transportable moisture limit at the point of loading ships for maritime transport. Moisture content and ore composition, specifically fines content, have a large influence on ore flowability. Typically, elevated moisture can result in bottlenecks, downtime and lost productivity due to build-up, conveyor carry-back and blockages, increasing maintenance costs. On the other hand, low moisture can result in increased dust emissions influencing the environmental footprint and product losses. Managing the use of water across the supply chain is therefore critical for service life of equipment, productivity, but also has environmental and social impacts, affecting the social license to operate. Previously, experiments have shown that oscillations induced in iron ore during handling and transport can result in movement of moisture through the ore. This kind of moisture migration depends on the nature of these oscillations, such as the undulation of idlers during conveying, the inherent ore properties and the initial moisture content. Moisture has been observed to move either upwards and/or towards the bottom of the burden. These effects can be exploited to remove excess water from the ore influencing handleability and operation, however, the actual mechanisms of moisture migration are currently poorly understood. The study presented herein involves the use of simulation to examine moisture and ore interactions. Simulations using discrete element method (DEM) and coupled with smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) are implemented to investigate the behaviour of moisture in wet ore in the presence of oscillation. This is conducted at a fundamental level first using glass beads and water which is then compared to iron ore at high moisture content. The results of the modelling are discussed in view of experiments conducted.
