The trend towards contracting by major coal mining companies such as BHP Coal and MIM Ltd is examined. Reasons why this trend is occurring are discussed and the concept of partnering is examined. Two case studies are given: the Mt Owen Mine in the Hunter Valley, NSW and the South Walker Creek Mine in the Bowen Basin, Queensland.

Patterns of quartz veining in epithermal gold-silver deposits at Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Ohui in the Hauraki Goldfield, have been analysed to determine the effects of different lithologies on vein distributions. At Wharekirauponga, quartz veins are hosted in rhyolite and minor andesite, with the andesite containing slightly higher gold grades. Local basement andesite, rhyolitic tuff and silicified black shale host gold-bearing quartz veins at Neavesville. At Ohui, quartz veins are hosted in rhyolite, rhyolitic tuff and andesite. Fractal analysis was used to quantitatively describe the distribution of veining. The fractal dimension (D) of veining in silicified tuff is 0.25, moderately silicified rhyolite has D = 0.23 - 0.26, clay-altered andesite has D = 0.3, strongly silicified rhyolite has D = 0.3 - 0.39, silicified andesite has D = 0.4, and silicified black shale has D = 0.43. The D values are related to the composition of the host rock, and appear to be controlled by its competency. Hydrothermal silicification results in increased competency and higher D values. Vein thickness frequency plots for different lithologies show that andesite at Ohui, and to a much lesser degree at Wharekirauponga, contains more thick veins than rhyolite and tuff. Gold grades show a strong to fair correlation with higher vein density in three drillholes at Wharekirauponga. The fractal dimension of veining is an important control on fluid flow and gold deposition within an active epithermal system. Vein systems with higher D have a greater density of veining which would have favoured increased fluid-rock interaction. Lower D vein systems have more clustered arrays. The increased fluid-rock interaction induced by a high D vein system, when combined with a reactive host rock, results in an environment which is highly favourable for gold deposition. This situation is seen in the andesite at Wharekirauponga.

This paper proposes an approach to determine the influence of non-ideal detonation characteristics related to the charge diameter, explosive type and confinement conditions on the available shock energy of ANFO and a representative chemically-sensitised (gassed) emulsion. The proposed degrees of non-ideality of the two different blasting agents are indicated by the Gurney ratios, determined from existing cylinder expansion testing data. The influence of the non-ideal detonation properties on blast design and performance are also compared using a series of theoretical, equal powder factor open pit blasting patterns with hole diameters ranging from 102 mm to 270 mm. The non-ideal shock energy factor (NSEF), which is the available shock energy per tonne of blasted material (MJ/t), is used to compare the different blasting patterns as charged with either ANFO or the gassed emulsion of equal charge density (0.85 g/cm3). The intended purpose of this investigation is to provide explosive users with an approach to compare different explosive types or charge diameters in the absence of dedicated non-ideal detonation modelling, which is generally not available to explosives users.The results of the comparisons suggest that at low charge densities, the example gassed emulsion displays a higher velocity of detonation (VOD) than ANFO in smaller charge diameters but similar degrees of non-ideality (based on proposed Gurney ratios). The results also suggest that the confined, non-ideal gassed emulsion VOD at hole diameters greater than 270 mm can be less than ANFO due to the low density effects on the emulsion matrix. The differences in non-ideal detonation properties and Gurney ratios between the ANFO and gassed emulsion resulted in gassed emulsion NSEF values ranging from 15 per cent lower to 65 per cent higher than ANFO for equal powder-factor patterns in blasthole diameters from 102 mm to 270 mm.

A new 2.5D airborne electromagnetic (AEM) algorithm has been developed by Intrepid Geophysics and Jovan Silic & Associates. The advantage of 2.5D (2D geology, 3D source) AEM inversion in 3D geological mapping applications and identification of conductive drilling targets, compared to the more commonly used conductivity-depth imaging (CDI) transforms or 1D inversions, are demonstrated using examples from banded iron formations (BIFs) and other geological settings. We show emerging AEM systems are capable of providing estimates of economic rock unit thicknesses, dips and fault definition at an accuracy that mitigates the need for pattern drilling.The 2.5D inversion application used in this work and described in Silic et al (2015) is a substantially changed version of ArjunAir (Wilson, Raiche and Sugeng, 2006), a product of CSIRO/AMIRA project P223F. The changes include a new forward model algorithm and a new inversion solver. The application enables the accurate simulation of 3D source excitation for full domain models inclusive of topography, non-conforming boundaries and very high resistivity contrasts. Solution is accurate for a geoelectrical cross-section, which is relatively constant along a strike length that exceeds the AEM system footprint.The major innovation includes a new inversion solver with adaptive regularisation, which allows the incorporation of a misfit to the reference model and the model smoothness function.Memory usage has been dramatically reduced and is estimated prior to execution. For speed the software has been parallelised using Intel message passing interface (MPI) and can be used on standard computing hardware or computing clusters. Data from survey lines with lengths exceeding 100 km can be inverted on high end laptop computers.We allow flexibility in the selection of components and in the estimation of noise.AEM inversion examples are shown for surveys from BIFs, base metals (volcanogenic massive sulfides) and geological mapping projects and the results are compared with known geology and drilling. The Kipoi Central (KPC) copper project is located in the Katanga Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is presented here as an example of an operating mine where the Mineral Resource was initially estimated by uniform conditioning (UC) and subsequently updated to localised uniform conditioning (LUC). This paper discusses the implementation of an estimate run using LUC and compares the results based on resource definition drilling to those obtained by close spaced grade control drilling and actual mill production.UC is a nonlinear geostatistical technique designed for recoverable resource estimation, typically using wide spaced exploration and resource definition drilling. The primary output of UC is the grade, tonnage and metal above a series of user-defined cut-off grades for a particular selective mining unit (SMU) block size. The UC approach is considered to provide a more accurate representation of the recoverable grade and tonnage at SMU support for non-zero grade cut-offs than would typically be achieved by a traditional linear estimator such as Ordinary Kriging. LUC is a relatively new approach involving the post-processing of a UC estimate and is used to spatially present the grade distribution predicted by UC at the SMU scale.This study demonstrates that the calculation of a more accurate and realistic grade-tonnage relationship for small SMU sized blocks is possible at the exploration stage using LUC, provided that the necessary theoretical and practical conditions for implementation of this technique exist.CITATION:Millad, M G and Zammit, M, 2014. The background and the basis for conducting a Technical Due Diligence are discussed as well as the source information, typical studies and potential limitations. Typical short comings including ‘show-stoppers’ are presented for the metallurgical area, with examples. Issues found in other areas such as geology, mining, infrastructure and financial evaluations are briefly reviewed, highlighting the input and interaction required by metallurgists with these disciplines. Most geophysical and geochemical data collected during regional exploration programmes are in vector form (location, value), and have traditionally been presented and interpreted in a profile or contour map format. However, the human vision system can interpret data presented in image format much more easily and new information is often revealed by the judicious application of powerful interactive computer image enhancement techniques. This paper describes a practical demonstration of the application of such tools to gravity and resistivity datasets from the Central Volcanic Region of theNorth Island.   Filtering, contrast enhancement, relief shading, pseudo-colouring and then overlaying of the gridded datasets in image format has helped identify inter-relationships such as the association between many low resistivity anomalies (epithermal deposits or geothermal resources) and the edges of large gravity anomalies (calderas or grabens). Similar revelations should result from the application of these tools to the integration of other mapped datasets from geophysical, geochemical and geological disciplines.

The occurrence of molybdenite in a small shaft in the western margin of the Wuuluman Granite in central western New South Wales is noted. Full petrographic and mineragraphic descriptions are given of a mineralized contact zone between the granite and a basic hornfels.Mineralogical data .indicate a similarity between this mineral occurrence and other occurrences in larger mines remote from the granite.

The Tui Mine is an abandoned Pb-Zn mine giving rise to water quality problems in the Te Aroha region of Coromandel, New Zealand. When sampled in September 2002, for example, both the Tui and Tunakohoia Streams draining the mine site exceeded ANZECC (2000) water quality guidelines for aquatic life protection (Cu, Cd and Zn) and recreational quality (Cd). Based on trace metal mass flux (kg/yr) from parts of the mine site, the principal pathways by which Cu, Zn and Cd contamination reach these streams have been identified as:the tailings dam leachate,the diverted stream water from above the dam,the drainage from Adit 5 (which accounts for 95 % of Zn and Cd contamination in Tunakohoia Stream), andto a lesser extent, run-off from waste rock piles below Adit 4 level. Of the various remediation options, which have been proposed for the site, the following are identified as providing the best protection for the Tui and Tunakohoia streams:stabilising the tailings dam embankment and capping the embankment and tailings,constructing and/or cleaning out engineered diversion drains around the perimeter of the tailings dam to divert surface water away from the tailings dam, andinstalling bulkheads within Adit 5. A formal postal survey of the people of Te Aroha (66 respondents from 230 surveys) indicated that their priority was that the site be made safe for the public to visit, and used for recreation. As soil samples in potential recreational areas of the mine site, significantly exceeded guideline values for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and As, soil removal or capping clearly also needs to be part of a remediation plan. Development of the site as a historical/ecotourism area was viewed favourably, as this may encourage more visitors to the Te Aroha area as well as educate local residents.

Few, if any, reliable thermodynamic data are available for the activity of tin oxide in slags. In this work, the activity of the oxide in silica saturated iron silicate slags has been measured at 1573 K using the equilibrium Sn (alloy) + Y2O2-SnO (slag).Slag and a Ag-Sn alloy were sealed in a zirconium oxide crucible to prevent the escape of volatile tin oxide, and the oxygen pressure at equilibrium measured in situ using the zirconium oxide as a solid electrolyte. Activity of tin was calculated from known data for the Ag-Sn system and activity of tin oxide calculated from free energy data. The results have been extrapolated to predict the industrially important distribution of tin and iron between Fe-Sn alloy and iron silicate based slags.

Occasional, sporadic and small occurrences of lollingite in the Broken Hill lode have been described,(l) mostly in the garnet sandstone in the foot-wall and under-wall of the Broken Hill lode. The lollingite contains appreciable percentages of cobalt and nickel and is regarded as an early mineral in the development of the lode; and, with the incoming of the sulphides, it has suffered considerable replacement by arsenopyrite. During the conversion of iron arsenide into the iron sulpho-arsenide, ilie nickel and most of the cobalt are removed in solution and are inferred to reappear in niccolite and other minerals that have been recorded among the later minerals of the Broken Hill lode. As a result of observations of the officers of ilie Broken Hill South Ltd., an occurrence of cobaltite can now be recorded which has developed by an analogous type of replacement.Cobaltite has previously been recorded from the Australian Broken Hill Consols lode in the vicinity of the rich deposits of silver, though not in contact with them. Cobaltite has been found in the northern extremity of the No. 2 lens of the Broken Hill lode at the 1,480 feet level of the Broken Hill South...

THE township of Costerfield is situated in the parish of Costerfield, county of Dalhousie, and lies 6 miles east of Heathcote and 30 miles south-east of Bendigo. It is separated from Heathcote by the Mt. Ida Range, which forms the western boundary of the Silurian formation. It is situated at the head-waters of Tin-pot Creek, a small southerly tributary of the Deegay Ponds Creek, which flows east to the Goulburn River.The field was discovered in 1860 by two prospectors, Coster and Field, who were guided there by a shepherd, M Nicol Coster and Field had already discovered an antimony lode about three miles nearer Heathcote, when M Nicol offered to guide them to the larger outcrop. The main Costerfield reef at that time projected above the surface, and was white through oxidation, though the bluey sulphide showed on fracture. No alluvial gold of any consequence was obtained at Costerfield, but a little was obtained, at Redcastle, 7 miles to the north, and in some of the gullies to the east.Following its discovery there came a period of prosperity to Costerfield, while the mining operations were confined to the oxidized zone. The early success of mining at Costerfield was due to the gold values, and it is probable that the oxidized zone was secondarily enriched. The earliest available record of values is a crushing of Coster and Co. on the Antimony reef (now known as the Costerfield reef), when 200 tons from a depth of 70 ft. averaged 4 oz. per ton in July, 1861. At this time a crushing mill had not yet been erected at Costerfield, and the ore was carted and treated at Redcastle. The massive antimony ore, consisting of mixed oxides and sulphides, was separated by hand-picking as "marketable ore," and the remainder crushed for gold. Obviously, the paramount advantages of contract mining have been recognised by mine developers throughout Australia, as evidenced by surface gold mining operations of significant output almost exclusively being performed under contract. These paramount advantages of using an experienced professionally managed contractor result from the mine developer being freed from financing the required relatively large capital expenditure at current relatively high interest rates or in a capital scarce stock market, and from the need to recruit and sustain a large operating work force in a competitive labour market.

The Australian metallurgical processing industry has shown great innovation and progressiveness over the past ten years. During the same period, exploration activity, particularly by Australian companies, has increased substantially in Indonesia. Following feasibility studies, the decision was made to establish a metallurgical laboratory and design facility in Indonesia. An Indonesian partner was selected, and legal and corporate matters were determined. The laboratory was established but proved far more difficult than a similar undertaking in Australia. Australian and Indonesian staff were recruited and training programs, including training of Indonesian staff in Australia, were implemented. Difficulties of operating in Indonesia included: ò language difficulties ò _ local pace of life ò culture ò communications. Rewards of the decision to establish the means to present the technology to Indonesia have included: ò a contribution to Australia's export of technology. ò an opportunity to expand Normet's client base. ò the opportunity to learn aspects of a foreign culture. ò the means to establish a sound long term investment. This export of technology from the Australian mining industry to Indonesia is an example of the initiatives and capabilities shown by the Australian mining service industry.

An extensive series of tests was carried out on a ball mill-rake classifier circuit in the New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. concentrator. The data were used to develop a mathematical model of the operation of a rake classifier and this model has been used in the simulation of the performance of a ball mill-rake classifier circuit on a digital computer. As a result of this simulation it has been possible to develop a technique for the optimization and control of a circuit which includes these units.

The method of investigation was to study the distribution of ore in great detail, to make a thorough structural study of the lode and the mine area, and then to compare the results of the two studies. Such a comparison usually reveals a very close relationship between geological structure and ore distribution, and can often lead to important conclusions which would not be reached in the ordinary working of a mine.The Triton mine lies 30 miles E.N.E. of Cue, or 380 miles N.W. of Kalgoorlie, in typical pre-Cambrian rocks, consisting of gTeenstone lavas and tuft's, interbedded with slates and some sediments, and intruded by granite and porphyry. Fig. 1 (at end of paper) is a longitudinal section of the mine and shows that the workings consist of the main North Emu and the smaller South Emu, separated by a distance of about 1 of a mile. Both orebodies occur on the same lode, which strikes north and south and dips practically vertically. On the same line, and of 1/2 a mile and a mile respectively to the north of the North Emu, are the small Rand and North Rand workings, where a big width of lode material has proved to be very low grade. In the North Emu the lode width averages 12 to 15 feet; it is seldom less than 5 feet and in places reaches 30 feet. In the South Emu the lode is wide, but only portion of it is payable.The lode is a mineralised bed occurring between massive lava flows on the east and a mixed series of tuft's and thin lava flows on the west. The lode material is hard, fine grained, and dark coloured, and generally has a faint banding which is believed to indicate a tuft'aceous origin of the original lode rock. Microscopic examination shows that the original lode rock has undergone considerable albitisation;' there has also been considerable formation of biotite which gives the lode material a characteristic sheen. The mineralisation consists of abundant fine pyrite, which is auriferous, and a lesser development of pyrrhotite which is, however, barren of gold.THE OREBODIES AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICSThe distribution of ore is best studied from gold contours, as these reveal features that cannot be detected in an ordinary assay section. Gold contours (see Fig. 3) are developed' by plotting the width and grade of all development and stoping assays throughout the mine on a longitudinal projection, representing each sample by a coloured dot according to a suitably chosen range of assay values, and then outlining areas of similarly coloured dots (see H. J. C. Conolly, Econ. Geol., April, 1936). Both width and grade must be taken into account and the simplest method of gold contouring is to use dwt.lft. values, but difficulties arise here with big widths of low grade and small widths of high grade ore. To choose an extreme case, 30 ft. of 2 dwts. and 2 ft. of 30 dwts. both equal 60 dwts.lft., and would therefore be given the same value in dwt.lft. contouring...

With the technique and data obtained in using the blast hole diamond drill for "Removal of Horizontal Level Pillar by means of Blast Hole diamond drilling at New Occidental Gold Mines N.L.," as described in Proceedings No. 133 of 1944, and a series of experiments using the blast hole diamond drill for stoping at New Occidental and New Cobar Mines over the past two years, a benching method of stoping has been developed using 2 inch coring diamond drill bits, resulting in efficient and economical ore extraction in these large ore bodies.During the experimental stages the standard H-inch blast hole was used, but the deflection of the holes, when using this solid bit, either decreased or increased the burden of the hole when it became necessary to drill holes deeper than 45 feet.It was found that after blasting vertical holes deeper than 45 feet, the ore did not break satisfactorily over the full length of the hole; on one occasion as much as 30 feet of bench was left at the bottom of the face, which had to be subsequently re-bored andblasted.As this defect was also noticeable to some extent even when the holes did not deflect, it was then obvious that the explosive had become less sensitive in the lower section of the hole. This was probably brought about by pressure being built up ahead of the detonation wave in H-inch hole, resulting in desensitization of the explosive.Another series of experiments were carried out, using 2-inch solid bits, which enabled a much greater burden on the holes, and the use of primacord for the full length of the hole.This gave satisfactory results regarding breaking and fragmentation, but was uneconomic owing to the excessive consumption of diamonds, and the slow rate of drilling.Further experiments were then carried out using 2-inch coring bits, (Fig. 1) which allowed holes of 90-feet to be bored with little deflection, and proved to be entirely satisfactory as to cost and speed of drilling.

Recovery of Precious Metals from Chloride Solution by Magnetite The development of environmental-friendly lixiviants as alternatives to cyanide and the increasing recycling activities to recover precious metals from waste materials have prompted researchers to find efficient methods and alternative sorbents to recover precious metals, such as Au and Pt, from aqueous solutions. This study explored the use of magnetite (Fe3O4) as a sorbent to recover Au and Pt from chloride solutions. Magnetite is a semiconductor and has the capability of transferring electrons both within the solid state and across the solid-liquid interface and has the ability to reduce metal species on its surface. The sorption of AuCl4- and PtCl62- from NaCl solution on commercial grade magnetite powder was investigated by batch-sorption experiments. The effects of pH, contact time, NaCl concentration and precious metal concentration on the recovery were studied. Sorption experiments revealed that magnetite exhibited selectivity towards other metals with the strongest affinity for Au. Both Au and Pt recoveries showed similar pH dependence curves, with peaks at pH 6 - 7. At this pH range, a maximum of 4.4 ¦mol Au/g Fe3O4 and 3.0 ¦mol Pt/g Fe3O4 were recovered after 24 h at an initial metal concentration of 0.05 mol/m3. Increasing the initial precious metal concentration increased the Au and Pt uptake amount by magnetite. It was also observed that the recovery decreased with high NaCl concentrations. The SEM images of the magnetite particles after the treatment showed that gold, which was confirmed by the EDX analysis, agglomerated and were deposited on Fe3O4 surface.
