For certain applications, steels have to feature a very distinct and well-defined level of cleanness in terms of the number and composition of non-metallic inclusions. Therefore, one crucial aspect of steelmaking is removing and controlling said non-metallic inclusions during the process. Particle removal during ladle refining comprises three stages, namely: 1. Flotation 2. Transport through the steel/slag interface 3. Dissolution of the particle in the slag. Only if all three stages are completed the particle can be considered as fully removed from the steel melt which, in turn, leads to the slag being one of the most influential parameters for inclusion removal and control. Depending on the composition of the particles and the slag, the dissolution can be controlled by different mechanisms. This study focuses on the diffusion-controlled dissolution of solid oxidic particles in slags. For this, a model of particle dissolution has been developed. For modelling diffusion, either the differential equation following Fick’s second law can be solved, or an analytical solution to this equation valid for stationary interfaces can be used. Both approaches allow for calculations of concentration profiles of the dissolving species in surrounding slag. From this, the mass flux can be derived, which finally leads to calculating the boundary layer velocity due to considerations of mass balance. In this work, both methods as well as results of dissolution experiments using High Temperature Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy are compared. This research aims to provide a framework for diffusion-based dissolution modelling in further expanding the understanding of particle dissolution in secondary metallurgy.

The stability of access tunnels is one of the main engineering challenges in deep underground mine construction. Many underground hard rock mining operations are now reaching depths where the induced stresses are such that sudden and violent failure of the excavations can occur very soon after construction. The loading conditions on the installed ground support schemes are often underestimated by conventional engineering design methods. Therefore, the actual loading conditions often exceed the installed ground support capacity. This can result in failure of the excavations and, in extreme cases, potentially closure of mining operations amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars in lost production. More frequently, violent excavation instability at great depth causes operational delays, costly and unplanned rehabilitation, as well as risks to worker safety. In order to address this challenge, this paper briefly summarises a modern, innovative approach to the design and construction of mine development at great depth. The process follows seven main steps. The first step is to characterise the rock mass strength, structure and stress. The second step is a stability assessment, which identifies the plausible modes of excavation failure, based on the rock mass characterisation. The third step is the definition of an excavation geometry which is harmonic to the high stress conditions. The fourth step is to prepare a site-specific face destressing drill and blast design which will reduce the potential for rock mass instability during the development construction cycle. The fifth step is to accurately quantify the expected loading conditions on the installed ground support. The method of doing so is uniquely analytical and probabilistic. It is based on the natural mechanical relationships between rock strength, structure, induced stress and the physical characteristics of the instability, including its mass and ejection velocity. The sixth step of the design process is to specify a ground support scheme arrangement with sufficient strength and displacement capacity to exceed the rock mass demand by a safe margin. The final stage is to install the complete ground support scheme using mechanised technologies which minimise the exposure of the equipment operators to unsupported ground at the tunnel face.

In the flotation of platinum group minerals pyroxene is a major gangue mineral. This study shows using zeta potential and ToF-SIMS analyses that when pyroxene is exposed to copper, nickel and/or calcium ions in solution at alkaline pHs a surface reaction occurs between the hydroxy species, in the case of copper and nickel, or divalent calcium ions and the pyroxene surface which influences the floatability of the pyroxene. Following exposure to copper and nickel ions at pH 9 addition of SIBX resulted in the pyroxene floating readily. It is also shown, in the case of copper, that the activating effect of the adsorbed copper hydroxy species can be reduced by the addition of complexing amines prior to SIBX. Proposals are made to explain these observations.

The effect of titania (TiO2 ) addition on the sintering performance of hematite iron ore has been studied by doping pure TiO2 into a sinter blend. The results of laboratory-scale compact sintering tests confirmed the considerable effect of TiO2 addition on sinter strength and mineralogy. The tumble index measurements confirmed an improvement in the strength of the sinter in response to TiO2 addition. The melting point of the sinter was also affected by increasing the TiO2 content, indicating a possible relationship between coke breeze consumption and TiO2 on industrial-scale sintering of Ti-bearing ores. Analysis of the sintered structures using optical and scanning electron microscopes confirmed a general improvement in the overall pore structure and sinter melt characteristics with the addition of TiO2 to the sinter blend. Ranger Uranium Mine is located within the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory of Australia and surrounded by the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park (Figure 1). The mining operation is currently producing about 1500 tonnes of uranium oxide annually, as well as considerable volumes of waste rock, low grade ore and tailings. The rehabilitation of the project should ensure that the radioactive mill tailings and other contaminants remain contained for at least 200 years, as required by the existing guidelines (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987). The present uranium mining operation is regulated by the Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy who must refer to the Environmental Requirements when considering regulatory options. Lemington coal mine is operating in an environmentally sensitive area in the Hunter Valley, NSW, Australia. Late in 1999 the southern pit was developed using a series of box cut blasts. After the initial development the area would have been free dug due to the soft, well-jointed nature of the deposit. However, it was decided to trial drill and blast to determine if shovel productivity could be improved to enable an overall mining cost reduction. The initial trial blast results were less than satisfactory with both environmental issues occurring and the desired shovel productivity not being achieved. An audit of the blasts indicated that wet ground and the presence of soft clay inter-bedded with harder rock caused the poor blast results. Also, water-affected explosive product combined with explosive energy loss into soft ground led to flat spots and tight digging in the hard band areas, resulting in the lower dig rates. Lemington Mine and Orica Explosives developed a plan to match the rock with the appropriate explosive type and energy. This resulted in a number of blasts over a six-month period using a new non fuming explosive product, æNovaliteÆ. The results have been excellent with the environmental issues being totally resolved and dig rates improved, enabling reductions in mining costs. This has allowed the mine to continue with their exemplary record of environmental management whilst achieving operational efficiencies.

Statistical techniques of Box and Jenkins (1976) have been used to assess the existing control schemes and determine the dynamics of flash smelting furnace at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. Pertinent process variables, such as, oxygen flow, flux flow, matte grade and iron to silica ratio in slag, were considered in the analysis using routine operating data collected over two periods of operation. Results indicate inadequate control of some of the important variables. Dynamic characteristic parameters (dead time and response time) between a set of input and output variables were identified to improve optimisation of the existing thermodynamic model used for flash furnace control.

Waste rock dilution causes mill feed grade to be lower than mineral resource grade. In nickel mines relative grade decrease (dilution) may be tens of per cent because of irregular ore boundaries and weak wall rocks. Five per cent dilution costs millions of dollars annually in medium size underground mine. In Outokumpu Group selective bench and fill stoping, cable bolting/shotcrete-skin support and fast ore boundary definition (OMS-logg in-hole logging or sludge sampling) are the key tools in dilution control. Commitment of the whole organisation to keep dilution low is also needed. Dilution sources and effects are discussed with examples of the dilution control methods applied in Outokumpu mines.

The traditional engineering approach to assessing stability is based on comparing resisting force (capacity) to driving force (demand), or strength to working stress. In underground coal geomechanics, considerable effort has been expended on quantifying the strength of rock structures. However, this has not been matched by advances in determining the load acting on these structures, reflecting a reluctance by some to embrace numerical modelling to assess load magnitudes and distributions. Numerical modelling is a valuable aid as loading environments are a function of both the stiffness of the mine workings and the stiffness of the superincumbent strata and are statically indeterminate in most cases.This paper defines stiffness, which is often confused with elastic modulus. It shows that, effectively, stiffness encapsulates geology, depth of mining, panel width, pillar width and mining height. Therefore, these factors are variables that need to be taken into account when determining stress magnitudes and distributions about mine workings. A range of examples are presented that illustrate the significance of the stiffness of the superincumbent strata on surface subsidence; the magnitude and distribution of pillar and abutment load; and aspects of bord and pillar mining, pillar extraction and longwall mining. These examples provide bases for identifying the limitations of some empirical approaches to mine design, identifying how to compensate for some of these in design processes; and emphasising the need to make greater use of numerical modelling in understanding and quantifying loading environments in underground coal mining.CITATION:Galvin, J M, 2014. A ground support system is a combination of individual reinforcement and surface support elements that work together to retain and contain the rock mass. The various elements are subjected to external loads and to interactive loading between individual ground support system components. This paper focuses on the challenges in determining the capacity and behaviour of mesh, recognizing that installed mesh can be subjected to several loading mechanisms. Field observations from underground hard rock mines demonstrate that there are multiple types of damage and modes of failure of mesh. However, these are difficult to reproduce in a laboratory environment. A critical review has shown that existing mesh laboratory testing rigs reproduce very limited loading conditions that may not be representative of underground conditions. The mIning operations of Bougainville Copper Pty. Limited are located at Panguna on the Island of Bougainville which is part of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea.C.R.A. Exploration Pty. Limited first established mineralization in the Panguna area in 1964. Exploration work since then has established ore reserves estimated to be 900,000,000 long tons of ore assaying 0·48 per cent copper and 0·36 dwt/ton gold. An economic feasibility study completed in July, 1969 enabled a decision to be made to proceed with a major mining operation. The ore will be mined by open cut methods and will be treated in a conventional concentrator with a nominal capacity of 90,000 short tons/day. The concentrate will be pnmped as a slurry through a 16 mile long pipeline to a port established on the east coast where it will be filtered and dried ready for export. Other supporting facilities for the mine include two towns, a 135 MW steam power station, and access roads.

Thiess Dampier Mitsui's Moura-Mine is located in the south-eastern corner of Queensland's Bowen Basin, some 180 kms west of Gladstone. Current requirements of the open cut operation are to drill and blast 25 million cubic metres of overburden per year, consuming some 12,000 tonnes of explosive in order to meet the requirements of the mine's four operating draglines and one overburden shovel. By early 1985 it had become obvious that the existing drill and blast equipment and technology could not cope with the long-term needs of the open cut mining operation. Three 61R drills were in need of rebuilding or replacement. Bulk ANFO trucks working two shifts per day were unable to match the requirements of the four draglines dne to long travel distances, slow discharge rates and their inability to load water-resistant products into the increasing number of wet holes. This paper outlines the significant steps taken to introduce new equipment and technology and the resulting improvements in the mine's productivity and economics.

This paper critically reviews the role of institutional research contractors (eg universities and the CSIRO) in the delivery of effective research, development and demonstration outcomes in mineral and coal processing to the Australian mineral industry. The criteria by which such R&D is justified, and the problems of quantifying the benefits of such research, are considered. Third-party funding mechanisms such as NERDDP and AMIRA are reviewed in the context of the difficulty of setting national research priorities. Some case studies are presented which illustrate both the problems and the advantages of institutional research for industry. The transfer of research outcomes to industry is identified as a significant problem which limits the effectiveness of all institutional research. Other topics reviewed include research management, the relationship between industrial companies and their research contractors, and the real costs of research. The paper offers suggestions for the ingredients needed for a successful industry-institution relationship, based on the Australian experience. It is concluded that the Australian model for this relationship is a very effective one, although there is still room for improvement.

The Burragorang Valley lies approx. 95 km by road south west of Sydney and some 35 km west of Camden. It is over 80 km in length and varies in width from 3 km to over 16 km. Geologically, the history of the Burragorang Valley is of interest. It was referred to by early geographers and N.R.M.A. booklets as the largest sunken valley in Australia. This description is incorrect as it is a water worn valley formed by the dissection of an uplift in the south western portion of the large Sydney Sedimentary Basin. Ages2 ago there extended right across the Blue Mountains, a continuous tableland into which the Nattai, Wollondilly and Cox's Rivers have carved out the formation of the Burragorang. This dissection together with other valleys such as the Megalong, Jamieson and Grose, formed part of the eastward drainage pattern of the uplifting tableland into the Pacific ocean. In recently completed road tunnel projects in Queensland, such as the Airport Link and the Clem7 tunnels, there is a smoke duct running along the roof of the carriageways to extract smoke in case of fire. In New South Wales, no road tunnels have a smoke duct. In the Melbourne City Link tunnels, there is a small smoke duct running along the roof. All of the tunnels are safe as claimed by the designers and authorities. However, there is significant cost associated with providing a full size smoke duct compared with no smoke duct. This paper is going to present a comparison of the road tunnel safety with a smoke duct and those without one from a risk perspective. A non-contacting under-belt capacitance and gamma-ray backscatter technique has been developed for the on-line measurement of moisture in coal. In this technique, moisture was correlated with radio frequency susceptance and conductance determined using an under-belt capacitance sensor in which a fringing electric field Interrogates a layer of coal on the conveyor belt directly above the sensor. To compensate for variations in the density and thickness of the coal layer, an under-belt gamma-ray backscatter gauge was used to measure an equivalent volume of coal.A plant trial of the technique was conducted at Stockton Borehole Colliery, SW Australia, where the gauges were installed on the coking coal product conveyor. Product moistures, in the range 7 - 14%, were determined with r.m.s errors of 0.50 and 0.25 wt% using on-belt and static off-belt gauges, respectively. The difference in the on-belt and off-belt gauge measurement accuracy was attributed to sampling errors in the calibration of the onbelt gauge.

In 1969, Queensland Mines Limited obtained two large Prospecting Authorities in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. The Nabarlek uranium deposit containing some 12 000 t of U308 was discovered on one of these in June 1970. Mining and stockpiling of this deposit were completed in 1979 and processing to yellowcake, which commenced in June 1980, is expected to occupy an 8-10 year period. The continuation of exploration, essential for the company to become a longer- term producer, was inhibited in 1972 by a Federal Government "freeze" on exploration in Aboriginal Reserves in the Northern Territory. Subsequently, the procedure for explorers to gain access to exploration areas in Aboriginal land was radically changed by the proclamation of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. As a result of this Act and the associated administrative policies adopted by Governments, Queensland Mines Limited has not yet regained access to the exploration areas it formally held in the early 1970's.

The Mt. Tom Price orebody of Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited consists of a folded hematite - shale sequence capped by a layer of goethite. Consequently, variations in iron content occur within the orebody, and as the overall grade is below that required to make specification products, selective mining must be carried out. A necessary preliminary to quality control'of products based on selective mining is the production of advance data, on the tonnages and grades of material to be expected in future mining areas. Bench plans showing zones of different grades and types of material anticipated are prepared from structural geological information. The grades of materials on a bench are essentially governed by the positions and attitudes of the shale bands. Quality control is exercised by blending different grades and types of material in primary crusher feed. Iron grade is the prime grade consideration although sometimes the level of phosphorus content must be considered. Pre-production grades Are determined from assay of samples taken from blasthole cuttings.

Gold production from The Granites - Tanami Goldfield during 1993 is expected to exceed 8 t, eclipsing that of the traditional Northern Territory gold mining districts of Tennant Creek and Pine Creek. This is the result of dedicated and successful exploration, and the consequent discovery of new orebodies such as those at Dead Bullock Soak.Following granting of access to regional exploration areas in 1988 and identification of favourable host rocks in the Schist Hills area, North Flinders Mines (NFM) began a methodical exploration program of detailed geological mapping, rock chip sampling, costeaning and various types of drilling. The first resource of 600 000 t of 3.3 g/t gold was announced in mid-1989. This has grown progressively with systematic exploration to the currently published resource inventory of 6.6 mT @ 5.4 g/t, (as at 31.12.92) contained in six separate orebodies within the Dead Bullock Soak Mineral Lease at Schist Hills.

Simple quotation of quantities of coal reserves neglects the relationship between qualities of coals and their efficient use. If exploitation of a deposit is contemplated, its life expectancy can be deduced only if its reserves are estimated according to the coal user's technological standards. A wide range in properties will satisfy a steaming coal, whereas a high vitrinite high rank coal would be preferred for coking and a low inertinite low rank coal for conversion. In competitive trading the buyer's commercial specification may require weighing against the producer's practical ideals, especially when beneficiation is critical. Differentiation of grades in quality of a deposit provides an intelligent understanding of the economic importance of the deposit. The Wongawilli seam of the New South Wales Southern Coalfield exemplifies the effect of quality criteria upon the extent of in situ, recoverable and marketable classes of economic reserves. Effective management of a deposit will result from simultaneous quotation of coal qualities and quantities in a statement of its reserves.
