This talk was delivered in Kalgoorlie in April this year, to the Kalgoorlie Branch of The Institution of Engineers, Australia. We believe it is of such interest to members of our Institute and readers of this publication we believe it important to extend the audience who have the opportunity to read it. An edited version follows:"Why should we be so concerned about Mining Related Education; after all is said and done, the mining industry is not a great employer of persons?"The mining industry is capital rather than labour intensive. It employs only 2.7 per cent of the national workforce. However; the minerals industry is Australia's major exporter accounting for over 40 per cent of the nation's total export of goods.In Western Australia the value of minerals production in 1985 was about $5,000 million and consequently mineral exports accounted for about 53 per cent of the total value of overseas exports from the State. The diversity of the mining industry is also worthy of mention and produces iron ore, alumina, gold, nickel and mineral sands. That apart, our potential to become a major producer of diamonds, rare earths and petroleum products is considerable, not to mention base metals (copper, lead and zinc) and uranium.Our mining industry is of national importance and contributes in excess of 30 per cent of the total value of Australian overseas trade. Although the mining ind ustry does not employ many people, the people it employs contribute very much more, per capita, to the wealth of the nation than do employees in any other sector of our economy.No-one would deny that during the 20th century Australians have depended on the export earnings from the sale of relatively unprocessed agricultural products and more recently the sale of relatively unprocessed minerals for their standard of living.Not surprisingly, therefore, our economy is highly vulnerable to unstable world commodity market prices.The slump in trade we are currently experiencing (in first quarter 1987-Edition) was brought about by the over supply of the raw materials we produce. However, the recent downturn in world market prices is more serious than previous slumps because in part it is due to technological advances 'in other countries which could have a permanent effect on the world trade of primary products.

Grade control is a process that requires the interaction between many components of the mining operation and successful grade control is only realised through good data, robust systems, and a well-trained, motivated and disciplined workforce.The Mt Magnet Gold Project Pty Ltd (MMGP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Ramelius Resources Limited, started mining at Mt Magnet in February 2012 with high expectations for success. Positive cash flow would fund an aggressive exploration and mine development program in the area to increase mine life. Disappointment followed when after start-up the operation had issues achieving budget grade and realising the predicted grade of the mined ore. In January 2013, things started to improve. During the next six months, gold production steadily increased with successive months achieving record production. What had changed?Improvements started following the realisation that controlling grade was not the sole responsibility of the mining geologist and that everyone on-site has a role to play. Coal augering is an ideal method for recovering coal from the highwalls of open cut coalmines. Coal augering is a simple process whereby additional flights are added to the auger cutting head and auger holes are drilled at 1.9 m diameter up to 200 metres deep. Traditional monitoring was located at the mouth of the hole and if methane was encountered above two per cent, inert gas was delivered into the mouth of the hole to deplete the oxygen content at the auger cutting head below 12 per cent. The auger operator was asked the question ‘how do you know that this is the case?’ Trials were undertaken to prove that the oxygen content at the cutting head did drop below 12 per cent (the lowest limit for methane to ignite, also known as the oxygen nose point). Initial trials showed that the oxygen content in the mouth of the hole did not drop below 12 per cent and modifications were made to hold the inert gases in the mouth of the hole so that the auger flights could take this inert gas into the hole. In-hole monitoring, after completion of mining and after extracting the auger flights, showed that the atmosphere quickly returned to fresh air. In-hole monitoring was also tried during the augering process and yielded valuable results. This paper will discuss the results of the monitoring, information on the gas results obtained and the methodologies used to optimise the oxygen content at the auger face.CITATION:Watkinson, M and Leisemann, B, 2017. This paper gives an overview of the difficulties associated with determining the strength of hard rock pillars. Although a number of pillar design tools are available, pillar collapses still occur. Recent examples of large scale pillar collapses in South Africa were caused by weak partings which traversed the pillars. Currently two different methods to determine the strength of pillars are used namely, empirical equations derived from the back analyses of failed and stable cases and numerical modelling tools with an appropriate failure criteria. Both techniques have their limitations and additional work is required to obtain a better understanding of pillar strength. Empirical methods are popular and easy to use, but care should be exercise that the results are not extrapolated beyond the range of the data which were used to derive them. An example is the Hedley and Grant formula (derived for the Canadian uranium mines) that has been used for many years in the South African platinum and chrome mines (albeit with some adaptation of the K-value) to design the pillar layouts. Very few collapses have nevertheless been reported and it might even be too conservative an assumption of pillar strength in these mines. As an alternative, some engineers strongly advocate the use of numerical techniques to determine pillar strength. A close examination unfortunately reveals that these techniques also rely on many flawed assumptions. An area where numerical modelling is invaluable, however, is to study specific pillar failure mechanisms, such as the influence of weak partings on pillar strength. In conclusion, it appears that neither empirical techniques nor numerical modelling currently provide a solid basis to conduct pillar design. It is therefore recommended that both these techniques be utilised when confronted with a pillar design to obtain the best possible insight into the problem.

The commonly traded base metals concentrates of copper, lead, tin and zinc are sold by miners to custom smelters using contracts whose terms were generally established at the beginning of the 20th century or even earlier. Technical clauses in these concentrates for items such as payable metals and penalty elements do not reflect current realities of extractive metallurgical technologies and hygiene/environmental issues.It is an axiom that the miners and smelters have a symbiotic relationship. While the existing antique and arcane commercial arrangements serve the purpose of transferring money from the buyer to the seller, they are not likely to result in the industry achieving better overall technical and economic outcomes. By examining the cases for copper concentrates and zinc concentrates in particular, it will be shown that the practical application of these antiquated technical clauses does not drive the miners to produce the better quality concentrates that should be desired by the smelters. This is despite development of mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgical technologies that would allow the miners to make better products.The adage that any extractive metallurgical problem in the smelter is cheaper to solve in the concentrator still generally holds.While nickel concentrates are only touched on lightly in this discussion because sales terms are more opaque than those for the other base metals, it is expected that the same conclusions will apply.CITATION:Munro, P D and Munro, S E, 2015. Much of the coal and gold mining industry of New Zealand is small scale. Funding is tight and mechanisation limited. The country has many well documented small coalfields (some with significant outcropping) and alluvial gold deposits. These are generally remote, difficult to access (physically and otherwise) and of submarginal value (largely a consequence of size when viewed for extraction by traditional techniques). The industry is also burdened by environmental and bureaucratic constraints. The above over simplified setting suggests to the Author, a newcomer to New Zealand, the opportunity to consider some novel concepts based on technology and techniques developed overseas or borrowed from other industry sectors. The objective being to make viable in economic and environmental terms projects that might otherwise be stillborn if considered for exploitation by conventional means. The paper mainly discusses 2 concepts focusing on the application of augers for exposed high wall or outcrop coal and micro-tunnelling augers for alluvial gold extraction. These may be considered high mobility 'container' (as in shipping container) packaged, or 'non invasive' mining systems. It is stressed that these are but concepts and have yet to be subjected to rigorous financial or engineering scrutiny. This could only follow their acceptance by, and input from, New Zealand miners. There will also be brief mention of a new modular conveyor system which might have application within the concepts or existing small scale mineral extraction operations and mention of a project currently in progress to apply tangible 'sustainability' to underground coal mining.

It had been intended to determine the influence of tantalum and columbium' carbides in mixtures with tungsten carbide. Owing to other, urgent developments, it has not been possible to proceed with that programme.1. THE PROCESSING OF A TANTALITE ORE(a) The OreThe minerals in which tantalum and columbium most commonly occur are tantalite and columbite. These two minerals are the end members of an isomorphous series of tantalates and columbates of iron and manganese, but in nature the series grade into each other.Some of the best deposits of tantalum and columbium ores in the world occur in the north-west of Australia. Until recently tantalite low in columbium was the only mine~al in demand but discoveries of extended uses for columbium, e.g., addition of ferro-columbium to high chromium I steels inhibits intergranular corrosion (weld decay), have created a demand for columbite low in tantalum as weB. Both of these types of' ore occur in the Pilbara district in Western Australia and most of the ore mined is exported to America after a preliminary grinding and concentration by gravity.A sample from the Bynoe Harbour locality, west of Darwin, was used in this investigation. The objective of a mine planning exercise is to plan a safe mine that maximises net present value (NPV) for the project. Two primary elements are key to design of a mine plan optimised to maximise profit: selection of an optimised production rate and selection of an optimised equipment fleet. Both depend upon accurate estimations of capital and operating costs for the equipment and for the life cycle of the mining operation. Once a trial production rate is determined, a primary equipment fleet, ie excavators, haulers, and blasthole drills, can be determined based on material characteristics and haulage distances and gradients. An auxiliary fleet, dozers, road maintainers, service trucks, etc can be determined using less rigid productivity criteria. With an equipment fleet determined, operating and support personnel can be assigned based on shift requirements and equipment operating needs; and material and supply requirements can be estimated. Knowing the areal dimensions of the major equipment items, road widths and repair shop dimensions can be determined. Personnel numbers and supply requirements determine the square metre sizes of offices, change rooms, and storage facilities. Reliable sources of capital and operating unit prices and costs for all these items are referenced in the paper. Once preliminary capital and operating cost estimates are calculated by applying unit costs to equipment, personnel, material and supply needs, potential profit can be tested using DCF techniques. An optimised mine plan can then be determined by testing the potential profitability of multiple mine production rates. Because of the economies of scale, full capital and operating cost estimates must be completed for each production rate in order to produce meaningful comparisons.

A brief review of the Waipipi Iron Sands Limited company history and operations over the past ten years is made along with a summary of the benefits of this mining company to New Zealand. Land rehabilitation procedures in coastal dune lands are described in detail and brief mention is made of a study of animal health and copper uptake. The paper concludes with a summary of the increased emphasis on agronomy and restoration as the mining operation commences dredging in a better class of grazing land.

The commonly used Stopes-Heerlen coal petrographic classification and nomenclature has over the years been subject to variable interpretations. This paper discusses the problem with specific reference to the inertinite maceral group. The effect of various interpretations of the Stopes-Heerlen system on maceral analysis is discussed and illustrated by means of comparative analyses conducted by a number of laboratories in Australia.An attempt is made to define the reflectance thresholds used by the authors to subdivide the inertinite group; the genetic and technological significance of these thresholds are compared.The difficulties of distinguishing structured and nonstructured macerals of the inertinite group are discussed in terms of possible improvements to the present StopesHeerlen system by extending the classification to include transitional maceral types.

Sluiceboxes can provide a much higher concentration ratio than most other gravity concentrators (up to 50 000:1) at very high overall placer gold recoveries (greater than 99 per cent). They are also very reliable, inexpensive and simple to operate. This combination is very difficult to beat and explains why the sluicebox is still the most important placer gold concentrator in northwestern Canada, Alaska and the rest of the world. A sluicebox is a rectangular fl ume containing riffles on matting, through which a dilute (<12 per cent) slurry of water and alluvial gravel flows. Sluiceboxes are actually centrifugal concentrators with settling velocity playing a minor role in gold recovery. Due to their higher density, gold particles tend to segregate to the bottom of the slurry flow where they form a streamline that is diverted by a low pressure zone into a riffle. Under ideal conditions, this ribbon of slurry will be overturned as it flows down the rear of the following riffle and will continue fl owing in a circular path to form a vortex. At the bottom of this vortex, centrifugal and gravitational forces combine to drive gold particles into or beside the matting. To remove the gold concentrates, sluiceboxes are shut down and the riffles and matting are taken apart and cleaned. The slurry velocity provides the energy that powers the vortex. If the velocity of the slurry is reduced through overloading with solids, insufficient water flows or shallow gradients it may not sustain a full size vortex. If the riffles are too close, too far apart, too tall, or if there is not enough energy available to the vortex, the vortex will not be formed properly and gold recovery will be reduced. If the slurry velocity is too high, extreme turbulence and the resulting scouring will also cause gold losses. Testing sluiceboxes with conventional sampling and evaluation techniques is very costly, time consuming and problematic. Most placer gold ores contain a very small number of gold particles in a large volume of pay gravels. Sluiceboxes can lose coarse gold particles. The presence or absence of one of these particles in a tailings sample can lead to high unpredictable errors (nugget effect) even when large sample volumes are processed with care. Every time conventional samples are upgraded, additional errors are introduced due to the inefficiency of recovery equipment. Nuclear tracer tests are more accurate, faster, cheaper and safer than conventional sampling. In 1989 through 2002, the recovery efficiency of dozens of sluicing systems was determined by mixing radioactive gold particles (tracers) into the feed streams of dozens of placer mines in the Yukon Territory, British Columbia, Alaska and Guyana. Four distinct sizes of nuclear tracers were used and their recovery was related to the design and operational characteristics of the individual sluiceboxes and their pay gravels. At clean up, scintillometers were used to detect the very low level X-ray and gamma ray radiation emitted by these tracers and locate them in the sluice runs. The effectiveness of any given section of riffles was easily diagnosed by the presence or absence of tracers. At every mine the gravel feed rates, water flows, equipment dimensions and riffle performance were measured. After the gold tracers were removed from the fi nal concentrate and counted, the concentrate was sieved and weighed. These gold recovery, weight and sieve data were used to calculate the quantities and size distributions of the gold particles in the original pay gravels and those lost in the tailings. The expired tracers were stored in a lead lined container until their radioactivity was near background levels (about two months). The standard errors from these radiotracer tests were estimated from binomial probability theory with the equation: SE = {(n + p + q) ^ 0.5}/n. Where n was the total number of radiotracers added, p is the proportion recovered and q was the proportion lost. Each overall recovery estimate would be within one standard error of the true recovery value (14 times out of 20) and almost always within two standard errors of the true recovery (19 times out of 20). The maximum standard error with 100 tracers was five per cent and occurred when the recovery approached 50 per cent. With higher recoveries, standard errors usually ranged from one to two per cent.

Two methods of calibrating the parameters K and Alpha for use in Gy’s formula for the fundamental sampling error were investigated. Approximately 480 kg of broken ore from Harmony’s Target gold mine in South Africa was used to compile the replicate samples for two experiments. The duplicate series analysis (DSA) and segregation free analysis (SFA) methods differ in terms of their approach to recovering the sized materials required for the calibration procedure. In this experiment the DSA method split off six more-or-less equal masses of material from a 75 kg lot that was successively crushed to finer and finer fragment sizes. The sublots so formed were split into 32 samples and fire assayed for gold. The SFA method used approximately 250 kg of broken ore crushed to 95 per cent passing 2.50 cm, which was then passed through successively finer screens until a sublot of less than 0.0075 cm was obtained. Each of the 15 sublots obtained in this way were split using a riffle splitter into 32 samples that were fire assayed. A total of 672 fire assays were used in these experiments. The sampling parameters K and Alpha were used for the compilation of a nomogram and to calculate the gold liberation size of the ores. While there are no definitive results in terms of the actual gold grain sizes against which the calculated sizes can be compared, it appears that the DSA method produces more acceptable results.CITATION:Minnitt, R, 2014. THE ore treated is almost pure copper pyrites (chalcopyrite) in a gangue of quartz and quartz-felsite. Very little free iron sulphide (pyrite) occurs, and at the time of the erection of the flotation plant the stopes in the oxidized zone had been almostentirely depleted. This zone only extends to a shallow depth, and, below the l00-ft. level, the sulphide for the most part is clean and bright but in the crushed and brecciated parts of the ore channel, where surface water has circulated freely, the gangue is decomposed and kaolinized, and the copper sulphide badly tarnished. This class of ore gave considerable trouble at the mill, but unfortunately, was very limited in quantity. A sample of rich ore assayed-Copper, 21.2 %; iron, 24:.3 %; silica, 28.9 %; sulphur, 25.1%.The concentration in the original mill was effected by handpicking, jigging, and tabling. A considerable portion of the copper mineral arrives at the surface in the form of large lumps of very pure quality, eminently suitable for sorting out by hand.The rich ore is tipped over a grizzly at the shaft bins; the oversize hand-picked, and the undersize bagged direct.

ILZRO sights are locked securely on the targets of the expanded applications and ever-improving quality in the major market for zinc-coated steel. Recent research has focussed on the on the interaction between Galfan and different substrate steels to determine optimum combinations for different applications. Meanwhile, NAGDA is advancing the market with new advertising for Galfan based on superior corrosion-resistant qualities proven through ILZRO-sponsored research. Practical manufacturing issues remain at the forefront of ILZRO priorities, with research emphasis on cutting and welding zinc-coated steel to provide direct assistance towards improved product quality and a more secure market. Moving to the arena of die casting, when the specifier looks to zinc to fill a design need, ILZRO-sponsored research projects provide comprehensive documentation on metallurgical characteristics for every zinc alloy under almost any imaginable application. On-going ILZRO-sponsored research is integrating this wealth of data with sophisticated computer programs that model die-casting designs with ever-increasing accuracy, as other ILZRO projects lay the market groundwork for zinc in applications ranging from vibration damping to electromagnetic shielding.

A review is presented of developments in mill liners to improve performance in terms of wear, impact, as well as mill grind and throughput. These developments are in response to the growth in size of SAG mills and the use of larger ball loadings and ball sizes in modern SAG milling practice. Shell liner developments include specific mechanical design features such as special bolting, directed metal flow to prolong liner life and a focus on the process aspects of the mills to provide more effective grinding motion with reduced wasteful ball-on-liner impacts. Grate design developments aim to provide high throughput of material, especially in the larger size fractions, while providing good impact and wear life. Curved pulp lifters are designed to ensure, at high mill speeds, complete discharge of coarse solids from the mill.

The case study has identified and characterised additional subsidence arising from longwall mining above or under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that the magnitude, mechanisms and prediction methods for such additional subsidence are different between the two mining configurations. This paper presents a proposed method to predict maximum vertical subsidence due to longwall mining under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that, unless different results from further new cases become available, the findings presented in this article, including the aforementioned prediction method, be applicable to the majority of sites in New South Wales, where multi-seam longwall mining is to take place. This article also presents an important concept of 'overburden modification' due to multi-seam mining. A causal relationship between the above-mentioned additional subsidence and 'overburden modification' has been identified as a result of the case studies. Further investigations into the physical processes that cause such overburden modification will be fundamental to the understanding and management of multi-seam subsidence.
