Coal, as well as a large part of other minerals in Canada, is produced by surface mining methods. This has resulted in short and long-term accumulation of waste rock in dumps. Two main problems arise from the flow of water through these dumps: stability of dumps and the impact on stream flows. In recent years, a number of mines have started placing waste rock in valleys for general disposal or far constructing mine access road ways. All these have created challenges in the following areas: effective design of dumps and flow-through dams; stability monitoring of the structures; environmental impacts downstream by way of increased amount of fines in suspension, sedimentation, and toxic substances; and long-term status of flow and flood. Similar situations also exist in many civil engineering structures. This paper discusses the status of rock drains and the immediate and future research needs.

"Operating heavy equipment in Labrador, where the winters are 8 months long and the temperature frequently drops below -40°F (-40°C) for days and sometimes weeks presents unique problems in both the operation and maintenance junctions. Winterization programs must be well designed and implemented at the proper time. These programs must include the proper selection of fuel oil, engine oil, hydraulic oils, greases, cooling system fluids, etc. More often than not, modifications have to be made to the original equipment in order that it can be operated safely and economically in the Canadian North. Manufacturers usually design equipment for a less harsh environment and the user makes adaptations by trial and error.Operators have to be trained for the proper operation on ice- and snow-covered roads in an open-pit mine. Special emphasis must be put on haulage road conditions. In this paper, the authors will cover some specific maintenance procedures, equipment modifications and operator training problems experienced by the Iron Ore Company of Canada in its open-pit operation in Labrador.IntroductionT he Iron Ore Company of Canada is engaged in open-pit mining , concentrating and pelletizing of iron ore. The company operates in two provinces, Quebec and Newfoundland (Fig . 1) . The Knob Lake operation "", based in Schefferville, Quebec, has mine sites located both in Labrador and Quebec . The Caro l Lake Project is situated in Labrador, 25 kilometres east o f the Quebec border at Labrador City. The Carol operation mines, concentrates and pelletizes it s o re before rail transportation to the seaport o f Sept-lies via the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway."

"A procedure f or constructing a grinding mill dynamic model is proposed. This model is used in a dynamic simulator of are grinding circuits. The simulator is designed for flexible flow sheets involving different grinding mills and particle classifiers and is able to accept several single variable PID control loops. The dynamic model is validated on a laboratory ball mill, and calibrated to an industrial installation. The simulator is used for characterization of grinding circuit dynamic behaviour and tuning of control strategiesIntroductionThe ore grinding operation is a critical step of the ore preparation process because it is the last comminution stage before the separation of minerals. The properties of the ground minerals to be concentrated, control the quality and efficiency of the separation process. This is why it is important to control properly the operation of the last grinding stage, commonly constituted of a closed circuit ball mill with classifier . To provide an adequate fine product, the grinding operation should compensate for the perturbations of the feed characteristics (size analysis, grindability, etc.). The main objective is to maintain a constant size distribution for providing stable operating conditions to the separation units. Simultaneously another usual objective is to operate the grinding circuit at a maximum capacity.Automatic control applied to grinding circuit s is the appropriate approach to improve its operation. Most frequently average optimal operating conditions are determined from steady -state performances of the circuit , and the automatic control is used for stabilizing the operation at selected values of the process variables . In the traditional approach, one or several single input! single output (SISO) control loops are implemented and empirically tuned. Advanced control practices'!' are based on a quantitative analysis of the circuit dynamics, which could also give a basis for the tuning of conventional SISO 100ps(2)."

What are the the major differences of today?s practices? He started as mechanic on construction projects and open pit mines. Early in his career Robert had supervision's responsabilities. He started in open pit operation (QCM) and after in underground operation with Lac Minerals, working at Bousquet, Doyon and Louvicourt mines, as U/G mechanical foreman and mechanical general foreman, and Maintenance superintendant with Cambior . "A simplistic algorithm jar simulating the rod or ball mill Bond grindability test applied to ores and minerals is presented. A performance comparison between the present algorithm and a previously published algorithm by Kapurot, modified in this work jar a fair evaluation, is also given. A worked example is furnished jar leading the reader through the various calculations.IntroductionThe Bond grindability test is widely used for the prediction of the power requirement of an industrial grinding mill. The procedures for conducting this test in either a ball or a rod mill are available(1). In the case of a ball mill, batch grind abilities have been correlated to Bond grindabilities to help monitor day-today variations in ore grindability for the purpose of plant control( 2,3). Of special interest is the algorithm presented by Kapur(3) for the simulation of the Bond test. In practice, the test lasts from 6 to 14 cycles (4 to 10 hours). With this algorithm, one can predict the Bond grind ability using information available from only the first two cycles.Sometimes the prepared feed for the grindability test contains too much fines compared to the total product desired at the mesh of grind under consideration. In such a case, the operator separates the fines from the test feed and adds to the remaining coarse fraction an equal amount of fresh feed. This combined feed then forms the feed to the first cycle of the test. In the present work, Kapur's algorithm is modified to include this special case. A new and relatively simpler algorithm is also presented. Statistical equations relating work index to pertinent variables are also given."

"The Pine Creek gold mineralization is associated with saddle reefs and quartz and quartz sulphide veining within the Enterprise Anticline. The anticlinal structure is complex and the mineralization was considered prior to development to be dominantly strata controlled. Gold grades vary up to 160 gin 1.5 m core samples with coefficients of variation in excess of three.The estimation of ore reserves for such a deposit must account for both the geological complexity and the extreme variability of gold grade.This paper describes the structural and variogram analysis of the gold grades and demonstrates the importance of incorporating the geological model in such an analysis. Variogram interpretation is greatly improved and greater insights into the finer geological structure areprovided. Part 2ofthis work presents the application of multigaussian kriging to reserve estimation for deposits with highly variable grade and which consequently demand highly selective mining operations. IntroductionThe Enterprise Gold Mine is situated some 220 km southeast of Darwin in Australia's tropical north. Gold is believed to have been discovered there in 1869 during the construction of the overland telegraph line.From 1894to 1915, some 75 000 ounces of gold were produced from 121 000 tonnes mined mainly by Chinese leaseholders. From 1906 to 1915, government-sponsored drilling led to the sinking of the Enterprise Shaft to 79 m and several drives were developed. Mining ceased because of war.Since late 1980, Goldfields Exploration Pty. Ltd. had explored on several mining tenements near Pine Creek under joint venture with the title holders, Enterprise Mines NL. This work culminated in the development of the current mine which opened on October 29, 1985.Feasibility studies to determine the economic viability of mining were based on ore reserves generated by project geologists using a sectional polygonal approach tuned to the interpreted geological control of the mineralization.The study motivating this two-part paper covers are-estimation of the recoverable reserve s using the geostatistical approach of multigaussian kriging developed at Stanford University, (Verly, 1984)."

"Concerns over possible additional involvement of governments in Canada's mining industry and its adverse effects on the industry 's growth were a frequent topic of conversation at the recent Annual General Meeting of the CIM.Still painfully fresh in the minds of industry leaders are the disastrous results of the federal/provincial scramble over resource revenues which followed the relatively high metal prices witnessed in 1973/1974. At current metal prices, it is not surprising, then, that a nagging fear persists that these governments may once again restructure tax and other rules to the detriment of the industry and the country.This month, Tax Notes recalls some of the progress which the industry and governments have made in 1979 in the taxation of the resource sector, and urges that higher metal prices be viewed in light of the costly exploration, development and production efforts which will be required for the industry to continue to play its important role in our economy.IntroductionAt the Annual General Meeting of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, held in April, 1980, it was abundantly clear that there is widespread concern in Canada's mining industry that this country's tax regime may once again be blasted by ill winds of change.A stable and more favourable tax climate, as well as higher metal prices and profits, made 1979 almost a golden year for Canadian mining. However, from the tax viewpoint at least, there are some spots on the silver lining as apprehensions grow that the well-heralded battle between federal and provincial governments over oil and gas may spread to the mining sector, with serious damage to the industry and its newfound federal-provincial cooperation."

"There are more than 300 occurrences of fluorite in Canada. Deposits of economic significance, however, are confined to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in eastern Canada, Ontario in central Canada, and British Columbia in western Canada. Fluorite has been mined and processed intermittently in Ontario and Newfoundland until November 1990, when Canada's only producer Minworth Ltd., a U.K. based company, with a mine and concentrator near St. Lawrence on the Burin Peninsula, Newfoundland, closed its operation.CANMET has processed ore samples from each of the major mineralized areas, and thirty-one studies were conducted between 1920and 1970. A summary of the important aspects of the various testwork studies is presented. The production of acid-grade fluorite was possible by flotation, and ceramic-grade, by flotation and gravity concentration methods. Gravity concentration methods included heavy media separation, jigging and tabling. Flotation was by direct and reverse techniques; associated minerals, quartz, calcite, barite, etc. were depressed by a variety of depressants. The function of the major depressants is discussed briefly. The various uses offluorite which include hydrofluoric acid, chlorofluorocarbons, aluminum production, petroleum alkylation, fluxing and ceramic applications etc. are discussed briefly."

"Designs, installation procedures and performance characteristics of martensitic cast steel concaves are reviewed. Longer wear life, fewer pieces to install and eliminating the need to scarf joints are the principal benefits of using martensitic steel to replace austenitic12% Mn (Hadfield's) steel, the traditional concave material for large gyratory crushers. Installation procedures that reduce the risk of breakage are described. Operating practices that affect concave performance are also discussed.IntroductionThe crushing machine considered to be the forerunner of the modem gyratory crusher was patented in 1878 by Charles M. Brown of the Gates Iron Works(1). The earliest gyratory crushers with receiving openings of 6 to 12 inches were fed by hand, and the crushing capacity of a mine was increased simply by installing more small crushers. The introduction of the steam shovel to open pit mining around the tum of the century provided an incentive for much larger primary crushers, and gyratory crushers with a 48 in. receiving opening were being built by 1910, followed not long afterward by machines with 54 in. and 60 in. openings to . Fortunately for the crusher maintenance people of that era, an austenitic 12% Mn steel with exceptional toughness was already available, having been discovered by Robert Abbot Hadfieldoi in 1882. Although small gyratory crushers working soft- to medium-hard rock reportedly used chilled cast iron (white iron) wear parts, these newer and much larger machines were fitted with ""Hadfield's manganese steel"" concaves and mantles to withstand the impact associated with handling large rocks .M E International first challenged the long-standing convention of using 12% Mn steel concaves in large gyratory crushers in the late 1960s when they supplied upper row concaves in martensitic cast steel for a 60-109 primary crusher at a taconite plant on the Iron Range. Since then, martensitic steels have been successfully substituted for 12010 Mn steel in concaves for more than seventy primary gyratory crushers processing iron, copper and precious metals ores, industrial minerals and crushed stone.This paper reviews materials, designs and performance characteristics of martensitic steel concaves in large gyratory crushers. The principal benefits include significantly longer wear life, fewer pieces to install and the elimination of scarfing. Obtaining the full measure of these benefits and minimizing the risk of breakage is strongly dependent on installation procedures, which are described in some detail. Operating practices that can affect performance are also discussed."

"Responding to market developments, interest in locating deposits of wollastonite has grown significantly. The many occurrences in the Grenville marbles of Quebec can be grouped into disseminated type and discordant vein-type deposits. Disseminated-type wollastonite occurrences have the disadvantages of lower grade, the need for more elaborate mineral separation, and failure to meet ""long grain"" technical specifications. Vein-type deposits have better grades and technical characteristics; exploration should be focussed on these and in the contact-metamorphic aureoles of fluid-rich intrusions. "The mechanical aspects of cable bolt failure are considered from the point of view of properties of grout and cable, as well as of the rock in which it is anchored. The results from recent investigations made in-situ as well as in the lab are combined and presented with reference to other work done in the area. An attempt is made to stimulate the thinking along these lines so as to initiate further research which may enhance the design of cable bolting as it applied to mining operations.IntroductionIn the past twelve year s systematic cable bolting has found application in many areas. In civil engineering rock anchors have been used to provide tension at the heel of a dam permitting the reduction of its cross section. They have been used in retaining walls to reduce construction time and costs by eliminating the need for struts and braces which complicate pouring the foundation walls. It is also possible to use rock anchors in providing reactions where tall buildings are subjected to uplift on one side due to wind forces. Cantilever bridges may be constructed by implementing rock anchors to provide anchorage requirements. Anchorage piles or dolphins or mooring ships have also been built using these. In the mining area rock anchors, commonly known as cable bolts because they are made of hoist cable may be implemented in the reinforcement of hanging walls or to retain rock slopes.In order to sustain de-pressurized ground where rock separation developed along the pressure arches, cable bolts were utilized at the Tsumeb Mine in South-West Africa and also at the Strathcona Mine in Sudbury, Ontario, In both places old degreased hoist ropes were installed in downholes from crosscuts above a given stope and then grouted without tensioning. Jeremic and Cassidy described the use of cable bolts to increase hanging wall stability and postpone fracturing, in addition to producing pre-support for improvement of stope back stability."

"The influence of flux addition on the structure and properties of pellets produced from low silica specularite with peat moss and bentonite as binders was investigated. Specific pellets basicities in the range of 0.4 to 3.2 were obtained by the addition of limestone or a combination of dolomite and limestone as flux. A t basicities < 1.6, the bonding in the pellets was provided by a glassy silicate phase. At basicities =1.6, calcium ferrites were the predominant bonding phase. When dolomite was added as a flux, presence of magnesia-ferrite was noted. The reduction behaviour of pellets at different basicities was found to be influenced by the type of flux and binder. The pellet compression strength and swelling characteristics were improved with increased basicity.IntroductionThe properties of iron ore pellets are influenced by the type and nature of the ore or concentrate, additives and their subsequent treatment to produce pellets. The interaction between various constituents of the concentrate and additives, i.e. iron oxides, gangue and fluxes etc. result in the formation of various mineralogical phases which affect the degree and nature of bonding achieved in the pellet and the structure and distribution of pores. The pellet properties such as pellet strength and reducibility are influenced by the extent and type of bonding achieved between the ore particles. In view of the present emphasis on the production of high quality pellets to meet progressively stringent quality control requirements, it is essential to investigate the effect of additives on the bonding mechanism and properties of the pellets.In the past, the effects of additives on the bonding mechanism of pellets have been investigated. It is important to note that the conditions and parameters to be controlled are typical of a given concentrate/ore. In this paper, the results of the investigation on characterization of fluxed pellets produced from a low silica specularite concentrate are reported.This investigation was also aimed at assessing the suitability of peat moss for use as a binder for the production of low silica fluxed pellets. Peat moss is abundantly available in the vicinity of iron ore mines in Quebec and encouraging results have been obtained du ring the production of high silica acid and fluxed pellets."

"This paper summarizes work carried out at the Dome Mine to mechanize the mining of narrow veins of less than 1.5 m in width by the introduction of new mining methods and specifically designed electric LHDs.Extensive mining trials have been conducted using sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. The introduction of the Microscoop and the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled scooptram has increased mucking productivity.As a result of this work, additional narrow vein stopes are now being prepared for production. In the future, narrow vein stoping wil lprovide a greater percentage of the total mill tonnage.IntroductionThe Dome Mine, which is owned and operated by Dome Mines Limited, is located at Timmins, Ontario. Production has been continuous since 1910 and in 1984 was increased from 1814 to 2721 tonnes per day.At least six distinct ore types have been recognized at the mine. In general, these orebodies can be broadly categorized into wide and narrow deposits. The wide deposits are approximately lenticular in shape and vary in width from 10 m to 40 m. The narrow orebodies consist of quartz and quartzankerite veins ranging in width from a few centimetres to six metres. The average dip of the veins is 65 degrees.Since the I970s, mining activity has been largely concentrated in the wider orebodies using highly productive open sublevel blasthole and mechanized cut-and-fill stoping methods. With the demise of shrinkage stoping in 1975, investigations were initiated to develop new mining methods and introduce LHDs - truly designed for narrow orebodies. These investigations resulted in test trials of the sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. Consultations with equipment manufacturers and suppliers led to the development of the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled electric scooptram and the introduction of the France Loader Microscoop."

"Abstract - The Owl Creek Mine is located near the west end of the Neo-archean Abitibi greenstone belt, 17 km northeast of Timmins, Ontario, and 4 km north of the Destor Porcupine fault. Gold occurs in epigenetic quartz veins and their pyritic wallrocks in two zones within a package of east striking, steeply north dipping, volcanic and sedimentary rocks. At the West Zone, 1 729 603 t of ore with a grade of 4.83 g/t Au (268 587 troy oz.) were produced from an open pit centered on a wedgeshaped unit of Tisdale Group basalt that occurs between two overturned, south facing units of Porcupine Group graywacke and argillite. Basalt/graywacke contacts are locally marked by graphiticcarbonaceous argillite, strike-parallel faults and massive quartz veins.Deformed quartz+/-ankerite veins occur along the graphitic sedimentary/volcanic contacts and in gently to moderately dipping fractures in basalts, and, to a lesser extent, in graywackes. Veins also occur sub-parallel to steeply dipping 070° foliation. Altered host basalts are composed of iron carbonate, sericite, quartz, carbon, chlorite and disseminated pyrite. Gold occurs as inclusions in pyrite, and less commonly as free gold in fractures and along graphite-quartz grain boundaries in quartz veins. Fractures preferentially developed in more competent basalts during pre- to syn-ore deformation are interpreted to have provided the permeability required for emplacement of mineralized quartz veins. Carbonaceous basalt/graywacke contacts further enhanced gold deposition by acting as chemical traps. The interaction of hydrothermal fluids with these carbonaceous sedimentary rocks led to the characteristic local darkening of host basalts due to carbon impregnation and chlorite development."

"This paper compares Canadian provincial mining safety regulations regarding the use and testing of cage safety catches, including a brief history and evolution. Regulations are similar across provinces, with only slight variations. Currently, the “Ontario-type” safety dog is the most commonly used safety catch in Canada. Performance estimation of the compensation mechanism for different safety-dog shapes and tooth angles show this shape works well and has consistent braking results, but the best efficiency is obtained for initial tooth angles greater than 10°. Miner safety is questionable for lightly loaded cages, an issue that should be addressed technically and legislatively.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article compare les diverses réglementations de sécurité minière concernant les parachutes des cages dans les provinces canadiennes ainsi que les essais qu’ils doivent subir. Il semble que les réglementations soient semblables à travers les provinces avec quelques légères différences ou divergences. Un bref historique des parachutes et de leur évolution est présenté. De nos jours, le parachute de « type Ontario » est le plus fréquemment employé à travers le Canada et il présente des résultats de freinage uniformes. Une estimation de la performance du mécanisme de compensation pour les diverses formes de taquets de sécurité et les divers angles des dents montre que cette géométrie fonctionne bien; cependant, la meilleure efficacité est obtenue pour des angles de dents supérieurs à 10°. La sécurité des mineurs est mise en jeu pour des cages faiblement chargées et ce point devrait être traité du point de vue technique et du point de vue législatif."

"Geophysical data are often presented on maps, sections or profiles with minimal data processing. A common example is magnetic data, in which the diurnal-free raw readings are merely contoured on a map. Other examples include profile presentation of VLF-EM data, IP pseudo-sections and airborne EM anomalies which may be shown on a map with only the measured amplitudes indicated.In recent years, efforts have been directed to the portraying of data in more useful forms. A number of algorithms (i.e., manipulative procedures and equations) have proven to contribute significantly to the usefulness of geophysical data. Some can be applied manually; others are sufficiently complicated to require a computer. Some merely alter the data to a more useful geometric form without altering the units. Others yield quantitative estimates of source body parameters such as conductivity and shape. Several examples follow:1. A simple algorithm is in common use which transforms noisy non-contourable VLF-EM data into less noisy contourable data. The input is the dip angle in degrees or per cent and the output is also in these same units.2. A simple algorithm has recently been developed which allows multi-level dipole-dipole IP data to be contoured on a map. Again, the units are not altered.3. A relatively complicated algorithm is in common use which transforms non-contourable height-sensitive helicopter EM data into contourable resistivity data,4. An algorithm has been recently developed which transforms non-contourable height-sensitive EM data into contourable weight per cent magnetite.The purpose of all the above techniques is to present the data in a simplified form. This, in turn, allows an easier assimilation by the user of much of the information content of the data."

"ForewordThis paper is to be published in two parts in succeeding issues of the CIM Bulletin. In Part I, the problem of global climate change is explored together with a summary of the government&apos;s present policy in this field. Implications for the steel industry are examined as are possible strategic responses. Part II of the paper will present a new possibility - the joint production of iron and liquid fuels useful for transportation purposes. In the joint production case, the objective is to use carbon for more than one purpose in what might be termed a &apos;carbon cascading&apos; technique. ABSTRACTIt is becoming increasingly probable that emissions of carbon dioxide from the fossil fuels will have to be reduced to deal with the threat of global warming. This issue is likely to be resolved one way or the other in the period 1995 to 2000 which does not leave much time to develop responsive options. In the intervening period, the policy of the Government of Canada is to stabilize emissions of greenhouse gases at their 1990 level by 2000, by encouraging greater efficiency in the use of energy. Should further reductions prove necessary, economic instruments would probably be employed but these would not be applied before a comprehensive international agreement is reached.There are three main themes in this paper: it is assumed that measures to control carbon dioxide emissions will in fact be necessary by the tum of the century; that there will be a rising need for liquid fuels to supply the world&apos;s steadily growing fleet of motor vehicles for many years to come, and that the future niche for Canada &apos;s industry in such a carbon-constrained world will be the operation of the energy-intensive industries with efficiency and environmental sensitivity.The steel industry, as a large user of both coal and energy in other forms, would be significantly affected by a need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. To investigate the effect of adding Ti to a Ni-Cr-Fe powder metallurgy alloy, a thermodynamic software package was used to predict the phase transformations that occurred during thermal processing. Specifically, the effect of adding 3w/o Ti to a 6w/o Al modified ternary Ni-Cr-Fe alloy (the quaternary) was simulated and the phase transformations that might occur in the material on sintering were obtained using the thermodynamic modeling tool. These predictions were subsequently compared with experimental results obtained by X-ray diffraction and metallography. For comparison, selected compacts were prepared containing only the ternary + 3w/o Ti (no Al). Based upon compressibility curves, the optimum pressure for producing the new Ti compacts was 500 MPa vs 600 MPa for the quaternary composition with Ti. In each case, hardness of the base alloy was enhanced by the Ti addition whereas the residual porosity remained relatively constant at about 19%. Finally, although SEM/EDS failed to confirm the presence of Ti in the gamma prime intermetallic, XRD spectra showed a shift in lattice parameter on addition of Ti, suggesting that the intermetallic was of the form Ni3(Al,Ti).

"Complex facilities which provide for the collection, management and treatment of effluents emanating from the Sullivan mine and concentrator tailings were made operational in October 1979. Key features of the system are the use of upgraded tailings ponds for the storage of up to 800 million litres of metals-contaminated effluents, a treatment plant employing lime in a high-density sludge process and a sludge-impoundment facility designed for maximum long-term environmental safety. The completed works are capable of satisfying a difficult range of operating requirements imposed by highly variable weather conditions, drainage flows and soluble metals loadings. Final capital expenditures for the project approached $10 million and annual operating costs are about $0.8 million.This paper discusses the Kimberley effluents treatment project and the major considerations in its development. The treatment process, major plant equipment and initial operating experience are also described.IntroductionCominco Ltd. has worked the Sullivan orebody at Kimberley, B.C. since 1909 and has operated a concentrator some 5 km distant from the mine since 1923. Over the last 70 years, in excess of 120million tonnes of ore have been mined, and production continues at an average rate of 6,500 tonnes per day. It is a well-known fact that the contribution of this operation to Canada&apos;s mining industry and, in particular, Cominco&apos;s development has been significant. However, this success has not been without some undesirable side effects.Unfortunately, the Sullivan is one of only a few major Western Canadian orebodies which may be classed as ""acidic"" in nature. That is, the primary economic minerals, galena and marrnatite, are enclosed in a siliceous host rock with abundant pyrrhotite, but with little or no accompanying alkaline gangue minerals such as calcite and dolomite. The unavoidable consequence of mining such an ore is that contact with air and water generates an acid mine drainage containing various soluble metals orginally present as minerals.This problem also arises in the concentrator&apos;s tailings ponds, which, in the case of the Sullivan, are two separate impoundments of different materials. The 1,100 tonnesl day of ""iron"" tailings are primarily pyrrhotite which is surplus to the requirements of a separate operation that produces sulphuric acid as an intermediate to phosphate fertilizers. Inert gangue minerals with only a minor sulphide content are the main constituents of the 1,200 tonnes/ day of siliceous tailings. Corresponding to the relative proportion of sulphides in the solids, the decant from the iron tailings is substantially more contaminated than that from the siliceous pond."
