"The QR gold deposit lies in the Cariboo plateau region of central British Columbia. The deposit was discovered in 1977 and since then a mineable reserve of 1.3 million tonnes grading 4.7 g/t Au has' been outlined in three separate zones. Soil sampling of glacial tills followed by diamond drilling of favourable host rocks proved to be key exploration techniques.The deposit is situated in the southern Quesnel terrane along the eastern fringe of the Intermontane Belt which here comprises a sequence of basic and intermediate volcanics and a series of stocks of alkaline affinity; generally diorite, monzonite and syenite. Hornfels and epidote-rich ferromagnesian exoskarn and sulphide-rich mantos have developed in a metamorphic aureole formed around a central diorite stock. Gold-rich zones lie along the outer periphery of the aureole where bodies of gold-bearing epidote-rich skarn and auriferous mantos rich in epidote and pyrite have formed in beds of calcareous tuffite lying at the top of a thick basaltic sequence. The deposit is regarded as' a subclass of gold skarn deposits. Diagnostic features are its association with alkalic intrusive rocks in a subvolcanic setting and the presence of oxidized, epidote-rich mineral assemblages.IntroductionThe QR gold deposit lies within the Cariboo plateau region of central British Columbia, 58 km southeast of Quesnel. In the Hydrometallurgical processes, the presence of the so-called “crud” is a constant challenge in solvent extraction. Crud is a stable emulsion which forms along the interface between the aqueous and organic phase. The spread is influenced by the following parameters: first, wind blows the dust and impurities into the open sedimentation tanks. Second, the undissolved solids such as sand transported in the PLS causing problems in conjunction with incorrect agitator design. The crud fraction can decisively impact the efficiency of the hydrometallurgical extraction because the phase interface can constitute a large fraction and the sedimentation tanks cannot react flexibly to it. In the downstream process of the seriesconnected sedimentation tanks, they are thus all contaminated with crud. At the same time, the necessary mass transport is significantly impeded at the phase boundary between organic phase and aqueous phase due to the crud formation. The transfer of the organic phase into the electrolysis cell can result in a “burnout” of the cathode. The carry-over of this electrolyte into the extraction can cause problems with the pH regulation. The carry-over of the organic components into the raffinate also leads to contamination of the leaching circuit. The continuous treatment of the crud with a 3-phase decanter centrifuge is extremely effective in combating this problem. This technology splits all three phases from each other and they are consequently continuously separated. All subsequent process steps exhibit a stable, uniform effectiveness. The main advantage for the customer is that fluctuations in the process are eliminated and the organic phase can be recirculated back to the extraction. The recycling of the solvent alone justifies the investment in less than 6 months as examples from South Africa and Chile show. To operate solvent recovery in daily operation fully automated online at the optimum limit, the decanter centrifuge is equipped with a concentration-dependent pond adjustment called DControl®. By this means, we can guarantee our customers the maximum possible solvent recovery and minimise the solvent costs in this process step. This system is presented in detail in this paper.

"The eastern portion of the Late Precambrian geosynclinal structure known as the Labrador Trough comprises a 16,000-square-mile sulphide-bearing belt of good potential as a base metal exploration area. Hollinger and Hanna mining interests have carried on exploration in the region since 1953, with encouraging results. This program has been considerable in terms of both effort and expenditure, and has resulted in an apparently successful primary evaluation of the entire belt.Much detailed work remains to be done in the area. Exploration to date has been largely of a reconnaissance nature, employing various methods in common use in Canada today. In the course of this work, several deposits of promise, containing near-economic quantities of copper, zinc, nickel and other metals, have been located. A broad classification of these deposits is proposed.Exploration in the sulphide belt was started on the basis of partial control of the area under mineral exploration concessions. This was necessary to justify operations in an area of difficult access and high operating costs. The results of this now-terminated arrangement are regarded as being of benefit to those directly concerned as well as to the mineral industry in general."

"Over the past five years, contributions from geologists and mining engineers were instrumental in the successful development of MEPS. It is a system of FORTRAN programs specifically designed to be used by mining personnel to solve geological and mining problems. MEPS is a flexible keyword-driven system. Extensive error editing procedures significantly reduce the time required to proceed from problem recognition to solution. Possibly the most attractive feature of MEPS is that computer solutions may be guided or selectively modified to obtain desired solutions. Some highlights of MEPS are:1. It has been previously demonstrated [l] that there is no obvious thermal balance related issue limiting the size of a Hall-Héroult cell. Yet, it is well known that a forced-air sidewall cooling system is part of the AP50 cell design [2], In the present study, the authors analyze the impact of thermal loading on the mechanical deformation of high amperage cell potshells. The effect of adding cooling fins or a forced-air sidewall cooling system is then assessed.

Introduction Very little fundamental research has been done on asbestos fibre to cake maximum advantage of its properties and to determine in what commercial products it can best be utilized. For the research chemist who is associated with asbestos development work, a thorough study of mineralogical information on asbestos deposits would furnish reliable information on the rock formations and the mineral impurities closely associated with the asbestos. Furthermore, ?he must have an intimate knowledge of the uses of the fibre in various products so that he can visualize the importance of the fibre and the role it plays in industry. Some of the properties of asbestos fibres such as strength, composition, length, harshness or softness, and mineral associates are of considerable importance to the manufacturer because they are responsible for many production difficulties. Fibre Strength It has been known for some time chat asbestos filaments have considerable tensile strength. These strengths have been referred to merely as 'weak' to 'very strong'. Not until recently have numerical values been applied to the strengths of asbestos fibres. But today we can take a thin fibre filament and mount it between two holders and apply a gradually increasing load or pull until the fibre breaks. By measuring the cross sectional area of the filament and the amount of load applied, we can calculate the tensile strength of the fibre in terms of pounds per square inch. This type of test is slow and rather difficult, but the fundamental data obtained furnish important basic information that can be applied to mechanical processing equipment and to certain asbestos products.

Commercial deposits of sodium sulphate are harvested from alkaline lakes that are widespread throughout semi-arid southern Saskatchewan and adjacent southeastern A lberta. Concentration of sodium sulphate occurs in undrained basins under semi-arid conditions. Precipitation runoff from land adjacen1 to 1hese basins leaches 1he mineral from the soils and carries it in solu1ion 10 the basins. The process may be largely subsurface, wherein spring seeps feed basins associated with buried (preg/acial) river valleys. Evapora1ion during summer concentrates salts in the brines, and chilling of water below sa/Uration poin1 during win1er resu//s in deposi1ion of sodium sulpha1e (mirabili1e) crystals on lake bo//oms. Sodium su/pha1e, commercially known as sa/1 cake, ranks second only 10 po1ash in cen1ral-wes1ern Canada's nonme1allic mineral production. // is recovered from su,face brines, directly from intermittenl salt beds, and, until recently, by solution mining of shallow subswface deposits. Sodium sulphate is extrac1ed from seven alkaline lakes and sail f/a1s in Saska1chewan and one in Alberta. Annual produc1ion is approxima1e/y a halfmillion tonnes. Manufacture of kraft paper is the mos1 significanl marke1 for salt cake, but addi1ional quantifies are used in the glass and detergent manufac1uring indus1ries.

The Mattagami mining district encompasses a favour-?able belt of folded Keewatin-type rocks, with intercalated sediments and intrusives of late Keewatin age. This environment has been subjected to periods of basic and acidic intrusion. The orebodies lie within the fold structure and are associated with faulting and shearing of considerable magnitude. The No. 1 orebody contains 60 to 70 per cent massive sulphides. The minerals, in their order of abundance, are generally: pyrite, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, magnetite and chalcopyrite. It is evident that the broad geological structure of the district is amenable to ore deposition. There are two ? prominent linear expressions which comprise this broad structure. Both strike directions lie at the edge of, or are related to, a complex gabbro-anorthosite-peridotite zone. The fact that eleven of the ore zones discovered to date coincide with the broad structure indicates its over-all importance. It is estimated that the production from Mattagami Lake Mines will be in the range of 600 to 700 tons of zinc concentrate and 70 tons of copper concentrate per day.

Details of the interactions between the environment and the growth of terrestrial plants may be complex and difficult to study. This paper focusses attention on some of these complexities by means of six examples, each of which provides information on an aspect of the interaction between the growth rate of plants and the chemistry of the environment. The relationships which exist between the information obtained from these examples and the concepts of "holism" and "transfer rate problems" are pointed out and the importance of long-term biog•eochemical studies in Canadian environments is stressed.

This paper documents the 1988 discovery and subsequent evaluation (to 1991) of diamond bearing kimberlites in the Fort à la Corne area, Saskatchewan, by Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited. Cameco Corporation began participating as a joint venture partner (50%) in mid-1989. The first indications that kimberlite-type intrusions might exist in the area carne from Geological Survey of Canada aeromagnetic maps. Because of the overburden thickness (over 100 m), magnetometer surveys continue to be the main exploration tool in defining pipe locations and sizes. Magnetometer surveys in varying levels of detail have outlined one main cluster and two sub-clusters, the main group being some 10 km by 50 km in size. In excess of 70 individual targets have been interpreted from the magnetics as probably representing kimberlites. The size range of the individual magnetically-defined bodies is between 1 ha and 74 ha. Proof that the magnetic anomalies were kimberlite intrusions carne in 1989 when each of seven test holes, all drilled on different targets, intersected the potential diamond host rock. The majority of the targets tested were diamond-bearing, with the indicator mineral chemistries suggesting that both peridotitic and ecIogitic diamond parageneses could be expected. To date, 18 individual kimberlite bodies have been drill-tested. A total of 39 bulk samples, amounting to 186 t (representing 360 t of theoretical sample recoveries) were processed in 1990 and 1991. One hundred and sixty diamonds were recovered, averaging 0.04 carats in weight, the largest being 0.6 carats. Most of the bulk sample grades are less than 2 carats/loo t; only three bulk samples have higher grades, the best being approximately 10.5 carats/l00 1. The diamonds are predominantly gem-quality stones.

There is a trend in the industry due to monetary restraints and environmental pressures to look at ways to extract this maximum performance by either retrofitting existing thickeners or installing the most cost effective new thickener. This paper looks at some of the common problem areas and presents a range of solutions developed by Outokumpu Mintec in North America and outokumpu's subsidiary Supaflo Technologies Pty. Ltd.The Emerging PictureAfter many hours of discussions with a large number of plant personnel over the last two years a picture began to emerge regarding current thickening operations in the industry. Initially, it seemed that everybody had their own unique process problems and therefore needed a correspondingly unique solution. Looking more closely at all the cases and the ideas that we had either implemented or suggested, it gradually became apparent that the majority of operators all had one and the same process need ....""Better Separation Efficiency""The range of operational problems that were uncovered in the survey were much more varied than expected and often were not even considered initially to be thickener problems. Often, it was only after the rejection of many solutions to the problem, generally due to capital cost, that the actual cause of the problem was looked at and found to be a thick-ener.A summary of the problems that have so far been identified is presented in Table 1. They are subdivided under three major categories of environmental, process and paste fill to highlight the wide range of mining activities that can be affected by poor thickener performance. These seem to be the major areas where the need for better separation efficiency is rooted."

A brief outline of production methods and processes is given to show how maintenance fits into the picture at this plant. The work force, and the tools needed to carry out this function, are then described. Preventive maintenance practices, scheduled annual shutdowns and routine check-downs are explained, especially as related to planning and to the materials and labour involved for a mini-mum downtime. A brief explanation of the materials, sup-plies and spare parts program, as well as the part played by the Stores Department in conjunction with the Maintenance Department, is given. Cost control and equipment expenditure indicators are explained. Some specific examples of maintenance jobs are described in order to show the flexibility of the program. S HERRITT GORDON Mines Limited has been in continuous production, except for the planned downtimes needed for expansion tie-ins, or the annual shutdown check-over periods, since the first shipment of nickel on a commercial basis in July of 1954.

THIS paper discusses testing and quality control of milled asbestos fibre. It has been composed with the intention of: (I) Summarizing past, present and probable future methods of testing and classifying the various grades of commercial asbestos produced by the Quebec asbestos industry. (2) Acquainting those unfamiliar with the methods used for evaluating, testing and controlling the grading and the quality of Quebec chrysotile asbestos fibres with some of the physical and chemical procedures currently used for that purpose. (3) Discussing some of the complications facing the producers, such as variations in the orebody and special requirements of asbestos manufacturers. ( 4) Detailing some of the present quality control methods. The object of this paper is to present an analysis of the major problems encountered both in the design and application of downhole drills. Particular reference is made to design features governed by: physical size limitations; metallurgical material standards; physical operating environment; range of commercial materials to be drilled; high power output required, coupled with simplicity from the operating and maintenance viewpoint; and bit design. The history of attempts to develop downhole drills is discussed, and representative mechanical configurations are illustrated. The general design and application aspects of the different types are commented on. The application of this drill type in various commercial fields, such as (a) oil-well drilling, (b) open-pit mining and (c) underground mining, is discussed, along with the limitations presently imposed by the commercial state of the art in the manufacture of accessory equipment; e.g., drill rods, air compressors, mountings, etc. Suggestions on the possible future direction of the development and application of this tool are put forth.

Ce gisement se distingue des autres gites archéens par une chronologie atypique des minéralisations: les veines de chalcopyrite, de sphalérite et de galène recoupent un amas exhalatifpyriteux stérile. Un vaste halo d'altération hydrothermale a chlorite et mica blanc est associe à cette minéralisation.La mise en place des veines minéralisées est associée à une phase d'extension NNW-SSE. Le complexe volcanique subit, par la suite, trois phases de déformation. Une compression, orienté N-S, développe une schistosité à peine pénétrative et un réseau de fentes de tension. Une réorientation des contraintes locales selon une direction WNW-ESE conduit au chevauchement de I' écaille d'andésite et de tonalite de Brouillan. Un réseau conjugue de failles normales cassantes est associe au relâchement des contraintes."

"The ability to codeposit fillers within a nickel matrix has led to the production of a new generation of cermet coatings with properties useful for various applications. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a ceramic-type particulate matter with thermal conductivity, thermal stability, inertness, and lubricity properties that allow it to be codeposited. In this paper, a method was developed for modifying hBN surfaces to allow them to be uniformly dispersed in water-based solutions such as an electroless nickel plating bath. hBN surface modification improved wear performance of the electroless plated cermet due to enhanced interaction between the particulate and nickel matrix. RÉSUMÉ La capacité à effectuer un dépôt simultané de charges dans une matrice nickel a abouti à la production d’une nouvelle génération de revêtements cermet (une combinaison de céramique et de métal) dotés de propriétés très utiles pour diverses applications. Le nitrure de bore hexagonal (h-BN) est une matière particulaire de type céramique utilisée pour ses excellentes conductivité et stabilité thermiques, son inertie ainsi que son caractère lubrifiant, qui permettent son dépôt simultané. Cet article explore une méthode mise au point pour modifier les surfaces du h-BN de manière à ce qu’elles se répandent uniformément dans des solutions aqueuses telles qu’un bain de dépôt autocatalytique de nickel. La modification des surfaces du h-BN a amélioré la résistance à l’usure du placage autocatalytique du cermet en raison d’une interaction accrue entre la matière particulaire et la matrice nickel.INTRODUCTION Electroless nickel alloy coatings can be used for many applications; however, the need for improved tribological properties such as higher wear resistance and better lubricity has increased interest in incorporating particulates (fillers) into the nickel matrix by codepositing the particulates with nickel during the plating process. The selection of the particulate type depends on the desired properties (Sahoo & Das, 2011; Sudagar, Lian, & Sha, 2013). In terms of tribological applications, electroless nickel-based composites are categorized mainly into lubricating and wear-resistant composite coatings depending on the type of particles incorporated. The electroless nickel-phosphorus (Ni-P) composite coatings are composed of codeposited solid lubricants such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), graphite, WS2, MoS2, and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and, compared to nanocomposite electroless Ni-P coatings, they demonstrate a lower coefficient of friction. On the other hand, the nickel-phosphorus wear-resistant composite coatings are composed of hard particles such as silicon carbide (SiC), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), boron carbide (B4C), silicon nitride (Si3N4), diamond, tungsten carbide (WC), and zirconium oxide (ZrO2) and, compared to nanocomposite electroless Ni-P coatings, they have higher hardness and better wear resistance (Sahoo & Das, 2011; Sudagar et al., 2013; Parucker, Klein, Binder, Ristow, & Binder, 2014; Chakarova, Georgieva, Petrova, Dobreva, & Stoychev, 2016)."

"The study of the physical properties of asbestos minerals requires a careful isolation of the fiber from the wall rock and, at a later stage, a comparison of these physical properties with those of fibers that have passed through the milling and beneficiation processes.The effects of mineral impurities, loss of fiber length and the formation of extreme fines (asbestic and/or associated minerals) often show up in the formation of special asbestos products as well as in the commercial production of asbestos papers, mill-boards, asbestos cement products, plastics and insulation materials, and in the filtration of blood plasma and wines.Numerous test methods have been developed in Canada and in England for use in the asbestos industry. Special treatments of asbestos fibers have been used to improve their physical and chemical properties and to eliminate impurities.Numerous problems connected with the use of asbestos fibers are discussed, such as the effects of asbestos on filtration, surface area, surface treatments using organic or inorganic materials, the surface charge on the fiber, the presence of magnetite and air pollution elimination. Biological studies on finely ground asbestos, when dispersed in 0.9 per cent sodium chloride solution and then sterilized and injected into hamsters, show that by reducing the dose, the tissue damage can be largely avoided. In these experiments, Arizona asbestos fibers were carefully extracted from the wall rock, finely ground, and examined chemically and micros-copically for any mineral impurities that might be present so that any effect on the hamsters would be directly due to the presence of the asbestos. The harsh Arizona fiber induced more extensive tissue response than the soft fiber when tested in hamsters."
