The goal of this paper is to present the carbon footprint of Chilean cathodic copper, as a function of the electricity generation mix, ore grade, and process efficiency. Ore grades and acid leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning (LX-SX-EW) yields in the range 0.5-1.0% and 60-80%, respectively, were considered here. Additionally, electricity supply from two Chilean suppliers, SING (1.0 ton CO2/MWh) and SIC (0.4 ton CO2/MWh) was assessed. Simulation results show that oxide plants located in northern Chile, served by the SING network, feature carbon footprint within 4.3 - 11.4 MWh I ton cathodic copper, as compared with 3.5 - 9.3 MWh I ton copper in plants served by SIC. The footprint was found to increase as ore wade and process yields decrease.

"PID loops – also known as base layers or regulatory controls – form the foundation of any plant’s control layer and it is generally accepted that PID loop health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line. Keeping these thousands of control loops in good health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line: it reduces variability, improves quality and throughput, and decreases energy costs and raw material usage. This has been well proven and documented in many articles. In the last ten years, technology has evolved: control engineers can now keep track of control loop performance and link it to the root causes of variability. However, they lack industry-wide best practices and criteria for determining what can be considered as excellent, good, fair, or poor performance. To ensure that PID control loops continue to perform well and meet their objectives, control engineers need a combination of (a) an appropriate monitoring technology and (b) best practices for doing the maintenance of base layer controls.Most plants have limited resources and operate with an increasing number of constraints; therefore, using the right tools and including reports in daily workflow is key for success. This paper suggests roles and responsibilities of key players needed to work toward control performance best practices and discuss organisational changes to succeed.INTRODUCTIONAlthough PID controllers are reliable workhorses in the process industry, they are often underrated. Since the 1980’s, computer control has evolved and the control algorithms used by control engineers have become increasingly complex. However, PID controllers still handle over 90% of the control loops in operating plants. Table 1 shows the savings that can be realized by achieving best-practice in several different process control categories (Brisk, 2004). The savings are expressed as a percentage of production costs."

"The Strathcona Concentrator operations, the application of control systems in the crushing, flotation and tailing fill sections, and current and future computer control concepts are described in this paper.The computer has been used for reporting and monitoring roles and operating the on-stream analyzer since start up of the mill in 1968, while over the past twenty months, it has been used for process control. The systems which have been developed include:1. The blending of pentlandite concentrate with pyrrhotite concentrate to produce a special product of constant nickel analysis.2. The blending of cement with tailing fill to produce backfill of consistent cement content.3. The supervisory control of xanthate, frother and pH to the flotation circuits to maintain the nickel copper concentrate grade within narrow limits.IntroductionThe Strathcona Concentrator is currently treating 7,200 tons per day of an ore which contains nickel associated with the minerals pentlandite (28 -32% Ni) and pyrrhotite (0.3 -1.0% Ni). The ratio of the nickel minerals varies from 4 to 15 parts of pyrrhotite to 1 part of pentlandite over the orebody. The production of a high grade concentrate re4uires the separation of this small quantity of .oentlandite from the much greater proportion of pyrrhotite and gangue and is complicated by the presence of two pyrrhotite minerals differing in nickel content, floatability and magnetic susceptibility."

The Kwyjibo deposit is an iron oxide Cu-REE-F-Mo-Au mineralization of Mesoproterozoic age located in the Grenville Province approximately 120 km NE of Sept-Îles, Quebec (Figure 1). Occurring along the SE margin of the Canatiche granitic complex, the deposit is composed of several polymetallic showings that are related to different textural facies of magnetite. The mineralization process at Kwyjibo is complex, and is divided into Early Granitophile, Magnetite, Main Polymetallic and Specular Hematite stages (Cayer et al., submitted for publication). The Main Polymetallic stage, comprising chalcopyrite, pyrite, fluorite, molybdenite and REE-bearing minerals, is superimposed on pre-existing magnetiterich rocks. Discovered by SOQUEM Inc. in 1993, the Kwyjibo deposit shares many characteristics with other hydrothermal polymetallic iron oxide deposits around the world. Foose and McLelland (1995) suggested that this class of mineralization could occur in the Grenville Province. However, only a few polymetallic occurrences are known to be associated with low-Ti iron oxide deposits in the Grenville. Kwyjibo is one of the most significant examples of a polymetallic iron oxide deposit to have been found in the Grenville Province to-date.

Information technology (IT) initiatives in the past have tended to be sold on their ability to maximize resource output and return on capital by using assets more effectively and efficiently. Many IT projects fail, not delivering return on their investment. This is known in the IT industry as the ?productivity paradox,? where increasing investments in IT do not result in comparable increases in productivity. Experiences and studies of most business sectors reveal that this paradox is rooted in the false assumption that more IT spending automatically results in financial benefit, whereas the true source of benefits is in how effectively IT is used. Most business sectors have accepted that the reengineering of processes is required to gain the full benefits promised of IT. A mining operation has organizational processes similar to most business sectors but unique operational processes. The lessons of changing business practice in more common business processes such as inventory control and customer-supplier relationships can be adequately transposed into a mine. The unique operational processes in mines, in turn require unique redesign efforts. Several enabling information technology opportunities have recently become available, such as more integrated mine production management systems and tactical manger training simulators. This paper reviews the latest IT products and ou lines the processes and kinds of change that will be required in order to benefit from these new investment options.

Kennecott's Utah Smelter commenced operations in June 1995 utilizing Outokumpu Flash Smelting (FSF) and Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting (FCF) technology. After some initial teething and equipment problems the smelter achieved its design capacity in mid-1997 and now processes over 1.0 million tonnes of copper concentrate per year with exceptional environmental performance. The smelting furnace has operated for 11 years and the converting furnace for 5 years without major shutdowns. The first major smelter shutdown commenced in September 2006 after extensive planning. The FSF was completely re-bricked and the latest above and below bath containment systems installed. The FCF was inspected and re-bricked with some improvements made to the above bath containment system. The FCF life is now anticipated to be the same as the FSF. Numerous improvements and modifications were made to the rest of smelter facility including extensive upgrades to the dry electrostatic precipitators. Production ramp-up was smooth with the smelter now frequently operating at acid plant capacity.

Due to difficulties associated with gripping in direct tension, indirect methods are commonly used to measure rock tensile strength. In this work, we adopt an innovative indirect tensile test method: Semi-Circular Bend (SCB) to measure the tensile/flexural strength of Laurentian granite (LG). The static tests are carried out with a servo-controlled material testing machine and the dynamic tests are conduced with a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system. Pulse shaping technique is adopted to achieve dynamic force equilibrium in SHPB to facilitate data regression. Finite element method is used to relate the failure load to the tensile strength. Strong rate dependence of the tensile strength is observed. The flexural strength is higher than the tensile strength measured using Brazilian Disc (BD). This difference is rationalized using the non-local theory. To further validate the method, a coupled Finite element/Discrete element method (Fem/Dem) in conjunction with the smeared crack model is utilized to simulate the fracture process during dynamic SCB tests. The resulting fracture patterns are qualitatively consistent with those from recovered samples. Both the experimental and numerical methods have validated the results and this new method is readily to be used for other rocks and other brittle materials.

This paper describes a research project that focuses on developing a diagnostic routine to assist in decision support for the condition based maintenance of mobile mining equipment subject to unsteady duty. The objective is to develop a general method for initial identification of mechanical faults in machinery operating under non-steady state conditions. The platform to be used for the experimental development and validation of the system is the swing machinery in an electric mining shovel operating in an open pit mining environment. The strategic approach that is proposed for the diagnostic routine will involve using novelty detection augmented by temporal classification.

"A full-scale prototype of “Jameson Downcomer” technology has been installed and tested on a Tailings Oil Recovery (TOR) vessel in Syncrude’s Mildred Lake extraction plant. Jameson Downcomers are a type of mineral flotation equipment used in the coal industry that Syncrude has extended to the recovery of secondary bitumen in the oil sand extraction process. The TOR vessels are currently being operated as single-gravity separation vessels, in series with the Primary Separation Vessels (PSV’s). We have developed a model to differentiate between “floating” and “non-floating” bitumen in the PSV’s, and then applied it to verify that the current TOR performance only captures the “floating” bitumen by simple separation. The existence of “non-floating” bitumen provides an opportunity for recovery enhancement by means of the Jameson Downcomers. To achieve bitumen recovery enhancement, middlings slurry is withdrawn from the TOR vessel, and passed through a number of parallel Jameson downcomers, within which the slurry is accelerated to a high-velocity free jet, and impinged upon the slurry surface inside the downcomer, in the presence of air. The aerated slurry is returned to the middlings zone inside the TOR, resulting in an incremental recovery improvement of bitumen in the TOR. The operation of the downcomers is thought to produce suitably small air bubbles for the flotation of bitumen, either by fluid shearing during the slurry jet impingement, and/or by micro-bubble nucleation. This full-scale prototype design has met or exceeded the recovery expectations of the original Research piloting, recovering at least 40% of the non-floating bitumen. In Syncrude Extraction, this provides high business value by a separation efficiency gain achieved with modest expenditure. As well, the system has demonstrated excellent operability and maintainability.INTRODUCTION Syncrude Overview Syncrude Canada Ltd. is one of the largest producers of crude oil from oil sands. Our crude oil production facility has the capacity to produce over 15% of Canada's total oil requirements. To do this, we surface mine oil sand, extract the raw oil known as bitumen from the sand using water-based processes, and upgrade that bitumen into sweet light crude oil by fluid coking, hydro processing, hydro treating and reblending. Our final product, Syncrude Crude Oil (SCO), is sent by pipeline to three Edmonton area refineries and to pipeline terminals which ship it to other refineries in Canada and the United States. The Syncrude operation is comprised of four major technology areas: Mining, Extraction, Upgrading and Utilities. As well, Syncrude invests more than $40 million annually in science and technology, and is among the top 50 companies in Canada for Research and Development (R&D) investment. "The Penna shaft is the deepest single-lift shaft in North America. Agnico-Eagle started sinking the Penna shaft in 1995 with a hoisting plant capable of hoisting 1800 t/d from a 2240-m deep shaft. Exploration success at depth led to the replacement of the existing double drum hoist by another double drum hoist capable of hoisting 7000 t/d. The use of another double drum hoist, instead of a Blair multi-rope winder, to hoist 24.5 t skips was only made possible by lowering the safety factor.This paper describes recent experiences at Penna and in South Africa, and examines the possibility of extending the double drum hoisting system to a depth of 3 km. IntroductionThe original Penna production hoist was a 4.88 m (16 ft) diameter double drum and single clutch machine. Béliveau (1996) and Scott (1996) have described this hoisting plant. In 1998, a decision was made to increase mining capacity from 1800 t to 4500 t of ore per day from the shaft bottom. Final capacity had to include an allowance of 1800 t of waste per day for future capital projects. While daily capacity was to be 6300 t, it would, by taking into account the different rock densities, be equivalent to hoisting 7000 t of ore.The steps taken to lower the safety factor were presented by McLaughlin and Scott"

"This paper summarizes research into the study of the control of flotation processes based on froth images. The use of numerical image analysis techniques for the extraction of significant patterns (froth structure and colour) from industrial flotation froths is discussed.First, the froth was analysed by the use of the Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) method to extract the spectral variation contained in a RBG image. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) was applied to develop the empirical model for the prediction of froth grade. The results of this application are illustrated using one industrial case study.Second, the froth was also analysed by Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Wavelet Transform Analysis (WTA) to extract features related more to morphological aspects. Since there is useful information hidden in froth texture, these methods are used as texture descriptor to classify different types of froths.Third, a control strategy based on a froth structure indicator was developed and implemented on an industrial zinc flotation circuit. The feedback controller uses a reagent flow-rate in order to maintain the froth structure at its set point. Process improvements obtained with the implemented control strategy are highlighted.Finally, the feasibility to implement a hybrid control strategy consisting in a froth structure supervision controller based on the froth concentrate grade estimated by MIA and recovery inferred by image analysis is discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe development of control strategies to achieve satisfactory control performance has always been a great challenge for engineers and the need for improved process diagnosis, control and optimization has become more and more evident for the mineral processing industry in the last decades. That is why new process variables need to be measured particularly in highly multivariable processes such as flotation. This industrial process is subject to a wide variety of disturbances mainly generated by frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in physical and/or chemical ore characteristics and also, due to some irregularities in manual process operating procedures. We document the occurrence, mineralogy and firing properties of magnesite from hydrothermal deposits in the upper Cretaceous ophiolites of Eastern Iran. These deposits occur as thin veins of nearly pure cryptocrystalline magnesite with only trace amounts of quartz, calcite, and dolomite. Ratios of CaO/SiO2 in the bulk ore are variable. The composition of dead-burned magnesite from these deposits, calcined at different temperatures and durations, is predictable from phase equilibria. Textures of the calcined magnesite were studied by SEM; results show that the principal impurites produced during calcination are forsterite, monticellite, merwinite, dicalcium and tricalcium silicates, and that these are located principally at triple junctions of the periclase crystals. The size of periclase crystals increased with temperature and duration of calcination and the amount of periclase-periclase grain contacts was reduced by increasing the concentration of impurities in the starting products. EPMA show: 1) that CaO and FeO contents in periclase increase steadily with an increase in the CaO/SiO2 ratio and the FeO content of the bulk ore, respectively, and 2) that limited solid solution exists between impurites. This study demonstrates that high quality dead-burned magnesia refractories can be produced from the Iranian magnesite with low CaO, SiO2 and FeO contents.

The original analogue instrumentation at Lornex Mining Corporation to optimize the throughput by controlling the power drawn by the semi-autogenous mills was found to be inadequate because of the frequent changes in ore type. Although the trunnion bearing pressure of the mill was a crucial control criterion, it was not utilized in the original control scheme. After several plant tests of different types of analogue controllers were unsuccessful in finding any control equipment suitable for this application, it was concluded that a digital process control computer was required. Computer control strategy to optimize the grinding rate by controlling the power and the bearing pressure of the semi-autogenous mill was developed and a Fox 2 /30 computer made by Foxboro was selected. After six months of experimentation, it was found that the throughput was increased substantially by computer control.

"Gold and silver cyanide complexes are presently desorbed from activated carbon by means of hot caustic elutions. These solutions may or may not contain additional sodium cyanide. There are several parameters which affect the rate of stripping. Some of these include pH, ionic strength, and temperature. (1) Stripping is conducted in recirculating (ZADRA) or once through (AARL) circuits.This paper describes the development of a new chemical eluant which significantly increases the rate of stripping of both gold and silver cyanide complexes from activated carbon. Two case history applications are also described.INTRODUCTIONAdditional cyanide is used in strip circuits in order to prevent its depletion which could lead to precipitation of base metals or lead to a change in the nature of the gold cyanide complex to one which does not strip as easily. (2)The strip circuits that are able to function efficiently without the use of cyanide are mostly those where the carbon is acid-cleaned after stripping.Once the minimum cyanide requirement to maintain the complexes in their proper state are fullfilled, any futher incremental increase in the level of cyanide will have no bearing on the rate of stripping. (3)DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW ELUANTGeneral DiscussionVarious carboxylated materials were investigated including octanoic acid, polycarboxylic acid (various molecular weights), salicylic acid, polymaleic acid, acetic acid. benzoic acid, terephthalic acid, 4, bi-phenyl carboxylic acid, phosphoric acid and stearic acid.The initial work was done on medium activiiy, non acid-cleaned carbon. The silver to gold ratio on the carbon varied greatly.Two different blanks were used. The first was an elution using a 2% caustic and 0.4% cyanide solution while the second was a 2% caustic elution."

"The development of a DC resistivity instrumentation system for data acquisition in extreme topography yielded an unexpected bonus in the quality and information content of the type of raw data gathered. Not only were traditionally too-rough areas being investigated systematically for the first time, the unique high-density, multi-directional raw data were providing the opportunity to greatly expand the range of conductive and resistive signatures that could be accurately recognized. Using a true 3-D inversion algorithm, 3-D earth resistivity imagery began to show distinctive anomaly patterns for hydrothermal mineralization at the seldom-visited resistive end of the spectrum, successfully imaging epithermal gold systems in conditions that had defied conventional ground and airborne geophysics for years.The traditional mode of designing a resistivity survey to test a specific target concept was shown to be an unnecessary limitation on exploration thinking when a single sweep acquisition of dense, multi-directional 3-D raw data could effectively provide the all-targets “shotgun” coverage that would take 10 or 12 conventional surveys to duplicate. Exploration planning has the opportunity to move from single steps of trial and error geophysical testing to a mode of mapping everything at the outset, and then sorting out what might be of exploration interest in the results. Survey parameterization becomes the non-technical process of marking an outline on a map and declaring “survey here.” Operational and interpretational reasons for not testing where the exploration interest lies have all but disappeared. With any-terrain capabilities and unprecedented raw data density and overlap to support interpretation of complex conditions, that outline can be drawn through extreme rough terrain, including lakes, cliffs, industrial facilities, and grounded installations to test for generally unknown sub-surface features of potential interest.As more is learned about the larger-scale signatures of ore settings and the district-scale geo-electric imprint of hydrothermal processes on lithology, it appears that the only thing certain about ore signatures is their uncertainty. This is not bad news. New opportunities abound as the advanced 3-D technology allows a first effective look at the previously unexplorable rough terrain or complicated settings, and a second look at areas where older results may now be known to be non-definitive."

"Pressure exerted on gold producers by regulators, project financiers, and civil society in the wake of the Baia Mare tailings spill in Romania during 2000 prompted most responsible gold companies to sign up to the International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport, and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code). The Code stipulates a ‘cradle to grave’ approach more comprehensive than that applied to any other mining reagent and poses particular challenges for operators who use cyanide-bearing tailings for backfill. This paper examine some of the challenges for Code compliance facing deep underground gold mines that employ backfill technology, most particularly the requirement to demonstrate that the potential migration of cyanide (and its degradation products) from emplaced backfill will not have an unacceptable impact on worker health and safety or on the receiving environment, either during mine life or after closure.Although the Code only contains a single reference to backfill, more careful consideration confirms that most sections of the Code that deal with tailings management are potentially applicable to mines where tailings material is used for backfill. Certain principles of the Code also pertain to aspects of operations, worker safety, emergency response, training, and dialogue with stakeholders relating to backfilling practice.For gold mines of the Far West Rand, the most significant cyanide-related risks associated with backfill operations relate to worker exposure to cyanide-bearing seepage and HCN gas. There is potential for seepage of cyanide-bearing water from backfill to compromise the beneficial use of surface and groundwater, and thus impact on downstream users and ecosystems. However, the extreme depth of mining and the specific geological and hydrological controls on the Far West Rand suggest that the potential environmental risks associated with backfill are likely to be considerably less significant than the cyanide-related risks to the workforce."

"The Three Bluffs gold deposit is located in the Committee Bay greenstone belt, which forms part of the Rae domain of the western Churchill province, Nunavut, Canada. Gold mineralization is hosted by iron formation of the Neoarchean volcanosedimentary Prince Albert Group, and is associated with silicification (quartz veining) and sulfidation of magnetite and other Fe-rich minerals. Conventional U-Pb zircon dating of a conformable dacite unit within the volcanosedimentary host-rock sequence and a crosscutting diorite intrusion confirm a ~2.7 Ga age for deposition of the supracrustal package. U-Pb monazite dates and Pb isotopic analyses of sulfides were obtained by laser ablation-multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). A subset of U-Pb monazite (1813.8 ± 8.7 Ma) and Re-Os arsenopyrite (1822 ± 21 Ma) dates, combined with a Pb-Pb secondary errorchron age for pyrite and arsenopyrite (1829 ± 77 Ma), suggest that gold mineralization associated with sulfidation of the iron formation occurred at ~1815 Ma, prior to high-grade (upper amphibolite facies) tectonometamorphism in the Three Bluffs area (D2TB/(M2TB). An ~1815 Ma age for deposit formation is broadly consistent with evidence from elsewhere in the western Churchill province and to the southwest in Manitoba and Saskatchewan for a late Trans-Hudson (1.9-1.8 Ga) gold mineralizing event. The majority of U-Pb monazite ages form a second population at 1780.6 ± 4.2 Ma, similar to the age of the majority of Re-Os arsenopyrite analyses (1763 ± 11 Ma). These dates are thought to reflect the timing of peak M2TB metamorphism. 40Ar/39Ar dating of amphibole, biotite, and muscovite yielded plateau ages ranging from 1723.8 ± 9.0 Ma to 1710 ± 17 Ma, which are interpreted to record the timing of postpeak metamorphic cooling to below the respective closure temperatures for Ar diffusion in these minerals. La minéralisation aurifère est encaissée par des formations de fer d’âge Néoarchéen appartenant aux roches volcanosédimentaire du Groupe de Prince Albert; la minéralisation est associée à de la silicification (veines de quartz) ainsi qu’à la sulfidation de la magnétite et d’autre minéraux riches en Fe.Les résultats de la géochronologie U-Pb conventionnelle sur une unité de dacite concordante au sein de la séquence volcanosédimentaire ainsi que d’une intrusion de diorite qui les recoupe indiquent que ces roches supracrustales ont un âge de ~2.7 Ga. Les âges U-Pb de la monazite ainsi que les analyses des isotopes du plomb des sulfures ont été obtenus par ablation laser (LA-MC-ICP-MS). Certains des âges U-Pb obtenus à partir de la monazite (1813.8 ± 8.7 Ma) et des âges Re-Os retournés par l’arsénopyrite (1822 ± 21 Ma), en association avec l’âge indiqué par une isochrone à données dispersées « errochron » secondaire Pb-Pb pour la pyrite et l’arsénopyrite (1829 ± 77 Ma), suggèrent que la minéralisation aurifère associée à la sulfidation de la formation de fer s’est formée vers ~1815 Ma, avant que l’événement tectonométamorphique (D2TB/(M2TB) de niveau élevé (faciès des amphibolites supérieures) affecte le secteur de Three Bluffs. Un âge de mise en place de ~1815 Ma pour ce gîte est compatible avec les données en provenance de l’ouest de la province de Churchill ainsi que plus au sud-ouest au Manitoba et en Saskatchewan qui indiquent la mise en place de minéralisations aurifères à la fin de l’orogénèse Trans-Hudsonienne (1.9-1.8 Ga).La majorité des âges U-Pb de la monazite constituent une seconde population formée à 1780.6 ± 4.2 Ma, ce qui est similaireLà l’âge obtenu pour la plupart des analyses Re-Os sur l’arsénopyrite (1763 ± 11 Ma). Orano Canada Inc. (Orano) operates the McClean Lake mill, located in the Athabasca Basin region of northern Saskatchewan. It processes high concentration uranium ore, delivered in slurry form from the Cameco Corporation operated Cigar Lake mine. After the ore slurry is leached at the McClean Lake mill, the leach residue solids are washed in a process known as counter-current decantation (CCD). This process uses six thickeners to facilitate counter-current washing of solids with diluted acid, flocculation and settling, as well as pumping the washed leach residue to the tailings neutralization circuit (TN), and the uranium laden aqueous to the solvent extraction circuit (SX). Challenges in settling the slurry in CCD started in early 2017. This is largely due to the variation in fines content of the slurry (D80≤75μm), and clay content. There are several changes that have allowed the mill to adapt to the evolving challenges of settling leached Cigar Lake leach residue. Flocculant selection and mixing, temperature effects, bed level management philosophy, and centre-well feed density are key parameters that have been explored as part of adapting to changes in Cigar Lake ore quality.
