Many jet grouted columns were recently installed to create a jet grout-treated soil foundation for an earthen embankment used in a large shoreline stabilization project in the Mystic River in Charlestown, MA. A physical test program was used to determine whether the jet grouting parameters the Contractor selected would meet the design requirements given the local soil variability, including soft river sediments and organic soils. The presence of hydrocarbons encountered in the marine sediments during the test program caused concern that the design strength could not be achieved. The published literature discusses the environmental aspects of jet grouting with hydrocarbons. The literature did not include many studies of the effect on jet grout-treated soil strength for the types and concentration of hydrocarbons encountered on this project. The grout mix, air pressure, and number of passes of jet grouting were varied in a second field test program to determine jet grouting parameters needed to achieve the design strength of columns with hydrocarbons. A geo-probe study was performed to identify the type and concentration of hydrocarbons on the site. With few exceptions, the quality control core samples from the production columns met the design requirements with many strength values far exceeding the design strength. This paper presents the data, and reviews the lessons learned. PROJECT BACKGROUND The Charlestown Bus Garage, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) bus maintenance facility located on the Mystic River. The site was home to a coal gasification facility before it was developed by the MBTA as a bus garage in 1978. A deadman-anchored steel sheet pile bulkhead wall installed along the Mystic river on the east side of the site supports the site grade at about El. 11 ft (NAVD 1988) (Figure 1).

"Fountain Slide is located approximately 10 mi (16 km) northeast of Lillooet, British Columbia, Canada, within the Coastal Mountain Range, and has been locally active since the 1970s. The project site is located near the base of the relic Tunnel Mountain landslide. The progressive movements have posed a significant challenge to British Columbia (BC) 99, the main north-south highway in the region. The slide began affecting the British Columbia Railway Company (BCR) tracks in the 1990s. In 2004, the Canadian National Railway Company (CN) acquired BCR and, during the next 11 years, undertook measures to stabilize the rail bed. Some of the measures undertaken include numerous track realignments, a shotcrete and soil nail wall, an anchored soldier pile-and-lagging wall, and adding a row of anchors to the wall. For many years, the measures had proved successful until mid-2014 when it was observed that the slide retrogressed uphill of the tracks. Since that time, the slide movements typically ranged between 5/32 and 0.4 in (4 and 10 mm) per day, leading to extreme distortion of the earth retention system and the need for frequent track realignment.In the spring of 2016, CN issued a request for proposals (RFP) for a designbuild solution with the expectations of: (1) a safety factor greater than 1.2, (2) considering only the currently identified retrogressive blocks that extend to about 200 ft (61 m) above the track; and (3) minimizing activities outside the current easement. It was also communicated that there was a possibility that a portion of the line may have to be abandoned if the proposed remediation was cost prohibitive.The fact that the existing slide was a small fraction of the relic slide was intimidating. The relic slide extended for approximately 1.0 mi (1.6 km) above the uppermost retrogressive block that was now affecting the rail line. Other areas of concern included:"

Deep foundations were required for construction of an 18,000 ft2 (1,672 m2) 4-story office building and an adjacent 23,750 ft2 (2,206 m2) 5-story parking garage in Queens, New York due to an existing uncontrolled fill layer ranging from 15-20 ft (4.6 - 6.1 m) in thickness beneath the building footprint. The geotechnical engineers for the project initially selected auger cast-in-place (ACIP) piles over driven piles to limit the impact of noise and vibrations on the surrounding neighborhood. Ultimately, drilled displacement piles (DDP) were installed since this method offered a more economical solution that would generate the required pile capacity with shorter drill depths and would also mitigate spoils volume. During installation of test piles by the geotechnical contractor retained for the foundation work, multiple unanticipated soil conditions were encountered that would adversely affect the constructability of the piles. The existing fill contained significantly more natural and manmade obstructions than expected and the underlying glacial soil became too dense to penetrate at shallower depths than anticipated. This paper discusses how these issues were overcome through pre-drilling and the use of detailed instrumented test pile data coupled with in-house engineering capability to proactively re-evaluate minimum pile lengths at any given location and keep the project on track. INTRODUCTION Geotechnical work in the New York City market presents soil conditions that can be highly variable and challenging due to the presence of uncontrolled urban fill placed over the native soils. Construction in this area can therefore pose many unforeseen challenges, even with detailed geotechnical analysis being performed at project sites. A case in point is a construction site in Queens, New York. The proposed site development consisted of construction of a 4-story office building with a footprint of 18,000 ft2 (1672 m2) and a stand-alone 5-level parking garage with a footprint of 23,750 ft2 (2206 m2), together with associated new pavements and utilities. The site is bordered by a mix of commercial buildings and residential properties on all sides. Depth of the uncontrolled nature of the fill extended up to 20 ft (6.1 m) below street grade. Given the significant cost associated with removal and replacement, deep foundations were recommended to bypass the unsuitable soils and support the structures at depth where good bearing material existed.

"This paper describes a case study of a retaining wall structure using a diaphragm wall to construct a stilling basin at Tanjung Bin T4 power plant in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The stilling basin is part of the Phase IV (T4) 1x1000MW power plant’s offshore cooling water discharge culverts. The site is located close to the sea with 5m of fill on top of very soft sediments of marine origin up to 20m thick underlain by fluvial clay and metasedimentary rock. Stringent wall deflection criteria and construction program dictated adopting an efficient solution with 800mm thick diaphragm wall supported by permanent top support as the temporary prop and improved horizontal restraint provided by deep mix piles acting as a slab (ground improvement layer) below the final excavation level. The depth of excavation is about 10.12m from the existing ground level. The proposed solution kept the wall deflection below the limit of 0.7% of the depth of bulk excavation and avoided additional props leading to faster completion of the structure. With unsymmetrical loading behind the retaining walls, 2D finite element analysis was carried out to assess the wall deflection and stresses in the wall and the grout layer below. The diaphragm wall is instrumented to monitor the behavior and the findings are discussed in the paper.INTRODUCTIONConstruction in soft marine clay has always been a challenge to the engineer because of its very low shear strength and its sensitivity to disturbance. In the case of excavation projects the problem becomes even more complicated with development of excess pore pressure during excavation. Marine clay with its low shear strength and lesser passive resistance, generally leads to large wall movements and settlement behind the wall. Increased passive resistance coming from increased number of props is useful but has its limits and it is no longer the most effective way in containing or reducing the wall movements or forces in the wall. One of the solutions to these problems is to improve the soil shear strength by means of ground improvement infront of the wall at an elevation most appropriate to maximize wall performance. There are several methods adopted in improving a soil layer including mixing additives to the ground to improve the shear strength to partially replacing the weak soil while others are fully replacing the weak soil. This paper discusses the case study of approximately 10m of excavation in soft marine clay using 800mm thick diaphragm wall supported by Deep Mix Piles (DMP) being used to improve soft marine deposit to form a slab just below the formation level and thus improving passive resistance significantly. The ground improvement layer helped to reduce the wall forces and deflections making it possible to remove the need for additional temporary props leading to significant savings is time and productivity. The paper presents the various options explored before this method is adopted, the design approach, instrumentation data and the monitored results."

Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) is a non-destructive method used to evaluate drilled deep foundation integrity. This integrity testing method is specified more frequently, and is becoming an industry standard in the transportation and private construction sectors. This testing method utilizes heat generated during the concrete/grout curing process to assess deep foundation integrity over the evaluated length. With compilation of the measured temperature versus time and installation records, a model of the Effective Average Radius versus measurement depth is generated. The generated effective shaft model is highly dependent on specific construction details, subjective modeling parameters, and proper interpretation of concrete/soil heat dissipation characteristics. Key components of the TIP analysis include both qualitative and quantitative assessments. Qualitatively, variations or sharp reductions in temperature profiles may indicate potential anomalous regions. Quantitatively, a correlation is established between measured temperatures and estimated Effective Radii for subsequent integrity evaluation. Best practices in processing the TIP measurements are presented, including selecting the optimal time for analysis, normalizing the thermal profile, and proper interpretation of potential anomalous regions. Recommendations for implementing mitigation efforts and interpretation of the TIP results are presented.

"In June 2014, Orange County Flood Control District (OCFCD) completed construction improvements of the East Garden Grove-Wintersburg Channel for a price of $42 million. Instead of the pre-existing traditional trapezoidal levee, the channel was improved with a vertical compact levee. Dubbed Soil-Mix-Sandwich (SMS), this geo-structural and environmental solution for coastal channel improvements, underlain by liquefiable soil strata, was both a design and construction innovation. It employed Deep Soil Cement Mixing (DSCM) within the confines of a hydraulically-pressed (Giken Method) sheet pile duo. SMS was unique because it incorporated both subterranean and supra-dredge-line soil mixing within a very narrow workspace. Its DSCM pattern aimed at optimum densification of the workspace and was confirmed during the construction process. It availed the DSCM sub-contractor (Hayward Baker Inc.) the opportunity to demonstrate the fitness of their huge wet-mixing machinery within a very confined access-area and introduced approximately 70,000 cubic yards of DSCM within a limited 15 foot workspace width that stretched for a mile. The sheet pile duo created a construction-enclosure that became a stay-in-place load resisting system. PROJECT CHRONOLOGY AND LOCATIONAn Orange County Flood Control District (OCFCD) project-report was commissioned to study the East Garden Grove Wintersburg channel (OCFCD facility # C05). The report examined the hydraulic conveyance of the C05 channel and was concluded in 1994 by Williamson & Schmidt. The project-report did not encompass extensive geologic studies; but it provided several alternatives for channel improvement. It recommended a single row of sheet piles as the preferred alternative for the downstream reach.The most downstream reach of the C05 channel is located in an environmentally sensitive area, in City of Huntington Beach, California, USA. Its site includes seismic chasms that surface within the C05-footprint (the Newport- Inglewood tectonic fault). Extensive deposits of liquefiable soil exist beneath the channel. Furthermore, tidal-influence prevails against the channel levee. Implementation of a successful design for channel improvement emerged after several traditional concepts were deemed unacceptable by geotechnical consultants. OC Public Works (on behalf of OCFCD) was in need of a design and construction technique that mitigated many associated risks. From these circumstances, Soil-Mix-Sandwich was born and was referred to in the rest of this discussion as SMS. OC Public Works required the SMS design concept to undergo verification by independent geotechnical consultants. SMS chronology from conception to construction can be summarized as follows:"

Assam cancer care foundation (ACCF) proposed the construction of hospitals and related facilities across 18 locations in the state of Assam-India. Tezpur is one among the 18 locations of Assam with high seismic risk. The strata at the site are comprised of mostly fine silty sands of lower SPT- N values. The water table is also encountered and ranging from 1 m to 2 m below EGL. Since the site lies in seismic zone V as per IS 1893, detailed liquefaction analysis is carried out for all five boreholes and indicates that soil is liquefiable and ground improvement is inevitable up to a depth of 15 m below existing ground level. To mitigate the liquefaction potential and enhance the seismic performance of the soil, ground improvement using stone columns by Wet top feed Vibro-replacement method is proposed. Also, the differential settlements can be avoided effectively under the raft foundation with Vibro Stone Columns. In this paper, field test validation results such as Pre and post-SPTs and ECPTs to access the extent of ground improvement, along with other information adopted in this project presented.

"The Dry Jet Mixing (DJM) Method was developed and has been put to practical use on the initiative of the Public Works Research Institute and Japan Construction Method and Machinery Research Institute. This method is used to inject powdery binder with compressed air into soft ground while mixing the binder with the soil using the mixing blade to reduce the moisture content of the ground and cause chemical reactions between the soil and binder, thereby strengthening the ground and stabilizing its quality.Recently, there is a demand for high-quality, high-accuracy execution control.This paper introduces the New DJM Execution Control System, developed to meet the future demand for more sophisticated ground improvement, based on the past results of the conventional system in order to provide new automated execution control with improved accuracy, functionality and column quantity.1. "The design of the below grade structure of Brigham Building for the Future (BBF) included three different areas to provide power generation and medical facilities as well as a parking garage. The three areas are divided and bounded by 3 foot thick slurry walls. Because each area has different depths and functions, the excavation and construction of the below grade structure presented considerable design challenges. The intricate sequence of excavation and construction between the areas was numerically simulated using a finite element analysis to assess the behavior of the slurry wall and the retained soil. The slurry wall and the related bracing system were modeled as a linear elastic beam and truss element respectively while the soil behavior was simulated using a hardening soil model. The interaction between slurry wall and soil was facilitated by the implementation of an interface element in the numerical model. The design of bracing system to adequately support the slurry walls during the excavation was done based on the envelope of the numerical responses in stage analysis. Predicted lateral displacements of slurry walls were later compared with the field measuring data. The comparison indicated a close agreement.INTRODUCTIONBrigham Building for the Future (BBF) is located in the Brigham and Women’s Longwood medical campus of Boston. The building will serve, once completed, as a biomedical research center and clinical facility to carry out a commitment by Brigham and Women’s Hospital to be the most technologically advanced facility in the country.The 11 story building will also feature a roof garden. The below grade portion of the building has a footprint of 265 feet wide and 210 feet long and is divided into three areas, a 6 stories garage, a cogeneration plant, and an imaging center. BBF was designed and constructed to achieve LEED Gold certification and will have high efficiency and improved sustainability as a medical facility. Ground breaking was in May, 2013. Below grade construction was completed in April, 2014 and the entire building will be finished in late 2016.As shown in Figure 1, the garage area has the largest foot print, 265 feet wide and 125 feet long. The lowest floor of the garage is located about 70 feet below grade. The co-generation plant is about 190 feet wide and 85 long and 50 feet deep. The imagining center is the smallest among three areas. It is 75 feet wide and 85 feet long and 22 feet deep. The areas are separated and bounded by 3 feet thick slurry walls.The perimeter and inner slurry walls were designed to support column loads from the above grade structures, lateral soil pressures and earthquake loads as per the building’s permanent condition and requirement. However the contractor was required to design the temporary bracing and the reinforcement for the slurry walls to resist construction stage loadings."

"In order to remodel an existing beach resort on the Gulf of Mexico, an existing three story structure, founded on stepped tapered piles, was to be replaced by a ten-story building with service rooms on a daylight basement level, conference rooms on the next levels and up-scale hotel rooms on the upper levels. The new building was founded on augered-cast-in-place (ACIP) piles. The pile caps and the basement required excavations between nine and fifteen feet (three to five meters) below ground surface.BAUER Foundations Corp. (BFC) successfully used Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) to install the support of excavation walls. This technique allowed for the adjustment of the wall alignment during execution in order to avoid existing and new piles and other underground obstructions. Nearly 1600 – 16-inch (400 mm diameter) ACIP piles were installed to an average depth of 71.5 feet (22m) below ground surface (BGS) by BFC to support the new hotel structure. Initial grout overages in piles were excessively high and ground stability issues were encountered in some pile locations. By identifying specific areas of concern BFC was able to modify the approach to ACIP installation, effectively mitigating the ongoing risks and successfully completed the project.PROJECTMarriott Hotels began the $300 million renovation and upgrade of their Marco Island Marriott Beach Club Hotel in Marco Island, FL to JW Marriott status in May 2015. The renovation included the demolition of a portion of their existing hotel tower, and the construction of a new 10-story hotel tower consisting of 94 new guest rooms and a 10,000 SF (900 m2) ballroom, among other amenities. As is typical with hotel construction, time was of the essence. The schedule was the driving factor of this project as the owner had already booked events in their new ballroom starting in January of 2017.BFC provided the client with a deep foundation package that included the installation of 1562 Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles supporting the new tower, and the design and construction of approximately 36,500 SF (3,400 m2) of soil-mixed retaining wall for support of excavation (SoE)."

"The maintenance of infrastructures has been of particular concern to the engineering community. As the world’s infrastructure expands and existing infrastructure ages, monitoring and evaluation of the structures have become more critical than ever. A large number of retaining walls, tie backs, slope stabilizations and piles are designed using pre-stressing steel. Many piles and drilled shafts are designed using reinforcing steel. There are few testing methods available to assess these tension and compressive forces. High cost, complicated equipment and limitation of space often prevent these methods from being implemented. DYWIDAG-Systems International (DSI) has been involved in the development, testing and utilization of DYNA Force® sensors to measure the force in the anchors during construction and at any time during the lifetime of the structure. They can be used for bare, epoxy-coated, galvanized and greased-sheathed steel in the bonded, un-bonded, grouted or un-grouted length of the anchor. The sensor is robust and requires no maintenance. Sensors have received attention in terms of accuracy, performance, ease in installation, durability, and cost effectiveness. This paper describes its application in tie-back and anchor force monitoring of retaining walls and bridge abutment and compression forces in drilled shaft reinforcing steel where the data were collected manually, automated and remotely.INTRODUCTIONOur infrastructure is expanding and the existing infrastructure is aging. Some structures are expensive to maintain and some occasionally fail. There is a large demand for implementing health monitoring of structures. Many tie-backs, retaining walls, dams and other geotechnical structures are post-tensioned and many of them need repair using a post-tensioned system. On many occasions during construction and service life of the structure, it is useful to know the force in the post-tensioning and anchor system. Many piles and drilled shafts are designed using reinforcing steel and the compressive forces in reinforcement are unknown. Although there are many methods to measure the tendon force, most of them are cumbersome, expensive, and the accuracy varies depending on the method used.The elasto-magnetic (EM) technology is a novel approach to monitor forces in steel elements. The DYNA Force sensor is built based on EM technology (See Fig. 1). It is composed of a primary coil and a secondary coil (sensing coil). By passing current through the primary coil, ferromagnetic material is magnetized. The sensing coil picks up induced electromotive force that is proportional to change rate of applied magnetic flux (Faraday's law) and relative permeability. As permeability of core changes, output voltage changes. The output voltage is calibrated to measure the force. A readout unit is designed to magnetically energize the steel through the sensor and measure the response of the steel to the process. The readout unit then converts the response into a direct force reading. The sensor has an embedded thermistor which allows for temperature compensation. Due to the diversity of the magnetic property of steel, calibration is done for each type of steel allowing the sensors to perform at their highest accuracy."

With ever increasing demands on space in urban environments and smaller available footprints, buildings are being designed to increasing heights to meet the need. This case study discusses the increasing challenges in developing projects within urban environments with smaller available footprints and increasing building heights. The One, Canada’s tallest residential building under construction will stand at 85 storeys and is located at one of the most prominent and built up intersections in Toronto, Yonge Street and Bloor Street. This led to many challenges in design and construction of the shoring and foundation work, including the required design capacity of the foundations for the supertall building and proximity of the large diameter drilled shafts to the excavation shoring wall. This case history describes the shoring design option evaluation, performance, and lessons learned to date throughout construction of the building foundations within a small congested site. PROJECT OVERVIEW The One, Canada’s tallest residential building under construction by Mizrahi Developments, is a supertall building that will stand at 85 storeys and 306 m (1005 ft). The first 18 floors will be comprised of retail, restaurants, and hotel with luxury residential condominium units in the tower above. The project is located on the Southwest corner of Yonge Street and Bloor Street, one of the most prominent and built up intersections in Toronto. The L-shaped excavation measures 58 m by 47 m (190 ft to 154 ft) and ranges from 22 m to 28 m (72 ft to 92 ft) in depth with one internal corner projecting 11 m (36 ft) into the site.

"Dry Jet Mixing (DJM) method as the representative deep mixing technique has been demonstrating best practice on ground mitigation works coping with complicated soil condition and limited site space. This technique plays an important role in many projects to stabilize soft ground involving troubles like sliding failure, settlement, bearing capacity etc. Serious disasters caused larger earthquakes make great demand on the application of deep soil mixing these days. Special design and alignment of deep soil mixing has been established against to liquefaction and serious failure due to liquefaction. In this paper, representative example of liquefaction mitigation by DJM method is summarized. The paper also present result of surveillance of sites installed DJM col umns after attack by Tohoku Pacific Ocean Earthquake. Performance of DJM columns suffered the earthquake is demonstrated at several sites even with conventional column alignment.INTRODUCTIONThe DJM method is a representative deep soil mixing technique of dry mixing manner in Japan. DJM can successfully install soil mixing columns trough automatically controlled binder injection based on pneumatic feeding theory and cumulative experiences.This method was joint-developed in 1978 by private organization under initiative of the Public Works Research Institute of the Ministry of Construction as the optimum method for improving the Japanese soft ground. Figure 1 shows full view of the DJM construction system. Figure 2 illustrates DJM working system indicating Binder Feeding Plant side and Mixing Machine side respectively.As typical soil mitigation method, many projects related with rivers and roads and city development has required DJM technology. The total number of the projects applying DJM has exceeded 5,000 with the total treated soil volume more than 32,000,000 m3 by the end of fiscal year 2013."

"Analytical and experimental work has shown that achieving the full inelastic lateral capacity of a pile may require the formation of a plastic hinge below ground level, in the pile shaft. The confining action of soil about the pile shaft was further been shown to greatly enhance the ductility capacity of the pile. An experimental program was therefore undertaken to build in the effect of external confinement through the addition of a GFRP jacket to the subgrade plastic hinge region. Two piles were thus modified, and compared to an unjacketed pile in a test rig which simulated a subgrade moment pattern and soil confinement. The ductility achieved by the jacketed piles was found to be substantially lower than an unjacketed control specimen. Failure mode of the jacketed specimens was also undesirable, involving complete tendon rupture and sudden loss in capacity IntroductionSeismic loading of concrete pile shafts can result in a demand for inelastic response. In the case of a superstructure supported by a single pile (i.e., a pile-column forming a single-column bridge pier, in which there is no rotational restraint at the top of the pile}, a plastic hinge will form below grade, at a depth which varies with soil properties and above-grade height of the center of seismic mass.In the case of a superstructure supported by multiple piles, there is rotational restraint, and the connection will experience inelastic action first. However, development of the full lateral inelastic capacity of the pile may call for the formation of a second, subgrade plastic hinge (fig. 1 )."

Soil nails are often utilized as a temporary or permanent earth retention technique for slope stabilization and for excavation retention for existing or new structures. Soils nails are generally advantageous as installation is relatively rapid and they can be installed beneath existing structures and where site access for equipment is limited. Due to the typically small cross-section of these elements, the inability to inspect the holes prior to grouting/concreting, and the various installation techniques utilized, quality control for assessing the integrity along the entire length is limited. Currently, quality assurance is conducted by load testing to verify the pull out capacity after installation. The load testing is typically done on a small percentage of the total number of soil nails. This paper will provide the results of a demonstration where the new Non-Destructive Test (NDT) method Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) was used to access the integrity of several soil nails along their entire lengths. This TIP method has been successfully used for several years to assess the integrity in drilled shafts and ACIP piles. The TIP method assesses the integrity across the entire cross-section and can identify regions where bulges, necks, and insufficient grout/concrete are present. TIP testing can also help assure that the contractor's installation methods are adequate and consistent for the intended design. For the project presented, instrumented Thermal Wire were affixed to the centered tension bars prior to placement in the excavated shafts. Temperature measurements were recorded from the hydration energy generated after grout/concrete placement, capturing the entire heating cycle. Manufactured defects were installed on the center bar at multiple locations. The results and conclusion will be discussed as well as recommendations for future use.

"Building retaining walls in an urban area is becoming more difficult due to right-of-way restraints. Using standard concrete cantilever walls requires a construction easement behind the walls for installation, which for the most part is unavailable. To install these types of walls in a limited right-of-way requires extensive temporary walls to minimize the construction easement. Top-down construction walls utilizingtie-back anchors for support require either the purchase of the right-of-way or underground easements in the area of the anchors.These problems faced the Department on Interstate 75 widening in Knoxville, TN in an area of a large cut. A multi-story Insurance Building and a large commercial Retail Center were located at the top of the cut. To prevent any impact on the buildings, the walls had to be placed within a limited area. The option of buying the properties was prohibitively expensive. Due to the height of the two walls and the variability of the underling rock line, contiguous caisson pile cantilever walls were contemplated as the only wall type that would be appropriate. The cost of the two walls was estimated to be very close or even higher than the cost of purchasing the two buildings. The Department believed that there must be a better way to deal with the problem. A vertically tied-down pile frame wall constructed from the top-down with a concrete facing was developed. This allowed the construction of the walls to be restricted to the available limited area and provided substantial savings for the State.INTRODUCTIONThe widening of I-40/75 has been a major transportation project in the Knoxville area which is being constructed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The project includes 18 Retaining Walls and 13 Bridges.Two of the 18 Retaining Walls, refer to Figure 1, are to support two valuable properties, one being an insurance company housed in a multi-story office building and the other a suburban shopping center which were appraised at $13.0 million and $5.0 million respectively. Due to the 31 ft. (9.5m) maximum height of each of the two Retaining Walls and the limited Right-of- Way of 15.0 feet (4.6m), a contiguous caisson pile cantilever wall was proposed for each of the two retaining wall sites with an estimated cost of $12.0 million each. The contiguous pile cantilever Wall is comprised of a line of caisson piles socketed into underlying competent bedrock. The design required that 4 ft. (1219mm) dia. piles be installed at 6 ft. (1.83m) centers, socketed into rock in order to provide lateral stability and restrict lateral wall movement to acceptable limits. The line of caissons would be fronted with a cast-in-place concrete face wall"

The current work investigates the behavior of inclined micropiles under seismic loads. The dynamic finite element method (FEM) was employed. Rayleigh damping was applied to the soil, and elastic beam elements were employed to model the micropiles. The micropile structure was assumed to have one degree of freedom as a column with concentrated mass. The numerical modeling of micropiles was performed to explore the effects of their inclination on their seismic performance within homogeneous soils with uniform stiffness. In addition, the effect of soil stiffness was studied by considering various stiffness in soil depth. The results from the studies have shown significant effects on the dynamic amplification and internal seismic-induced loads of inclined micropiles.

Across the Potomac River from the location of the DFI47 Annual Conference (October 2022), in Alexandria, VA, two large permanent anchored walls with a decorative shotcrete face were recently constructed for the North Hill project, a new multi-family and townhome development. The project was executed with a design-build approach for the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority with review by the Fairfax County Geotechnical Review Board. The project was constructed in highly variable Potomac group sediments that include high plasticity clay/silt terrace deposits overlying coarser grained materials. The soils were over consolidated and exhibited potential for slickensides from relief of horizontal stresses from past erosion. The wall system was designed to include deep soldier piles and permanent long strand anchors considering past slope instability in the area. As the construction progressed, problematic soil conditions and water issues required modifications to drilling methods. The two permanent walls spanned 800 and 1,000 feet long with a maximum height reaching 40 feet.

Jet grouting is a highly versatile ground modification technique that can offer significant commercial and technical advantages over traditional concrete pit underpinning applications. Despite these advantages, jet grouting remains an underutilized technique in the construction industry due to its perceived complexity, cost, and risk. When performed thoughtfully, underpinning by jet grouting offers significant safety and schedule advantages over traditional underpinning approaches. The New England construction market has seen a recent acceptance in the use of jet grout underpinning on congested project sites across a variety of subsurface conditions. The reduction of the cement batch plant footprint due to equipment advances has allowed the use of this technique in urban sites where its use would be previously infeasible. Furthermore, jet grout underpinning has been utilized for support of historic and sensitive structures with generally lower tolerance to settlement than is typically feasible with conventional pit underpinning. Robust, real-time geotechnical instrumentation monitoring systems have helped reduce the uncertainty and further expand the feasibility of jet grout underpinning applications. When properly designed and constructed by qualified and experienced jet grouting contractors, the flexibility of soilcrete for design and construction may be utilized to overcome the many inherent challenges which complicate underpinning and earth retention systems. INTRODUCTION The construction of buildings and infrastructure in our increasingly dense urban spaces often requires excavations below the elevation of existing structures immediately adjacent to the proposed work. Where a proposed excavation system encroaches into an existing structure’s zone of influence, additional measures, such as the construction of an underpinning or excavation support system, are required to safely excavate and minimize the impacts on the adjacent structures. Jet grouting is one method of underpinning that offers significant commercial and technical advantages over many other techniques. Though it was first used to the United States in the 1980s and has grown in popularity elsewhere, jet grout underpinning remains underutilized domestically due to its perceived cost and risk premium. Jet grouting has significant technical advantages over other underpinning methods due to its applicability in a wide range of soil types and its flexibility of design and installation. The jet grouting process is capable of limiting the movement of foundations during construction and excavation to lower thresholds than most traditional underpinning methods (Droof, Furth, & Scarborough, 1995). Its use for underpinning historic and sensitive structures with lower settlement criteria provides additional evidence to its technical utility. Through thoughtful design, adequate planning, and experienced installation, jet grouting can be an appropriate underpinning solution that can provide significant cost and schedule savings.
