The errors resulting from field sampling, sample preparation and analysis are investigated for drainage sediments derived from homogeneous sandstone, shale, limestone, basic igneous and granite lithologies as a background to a primary reconnaissance survey of England and Wales. Emission spectrographic analyses of approximately 350 samples for Al, Ca, Fe, K, Si, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sc, Sn, Sr and V and atomic absorption analyses for Cu, Ni, Mn, Co, Zn and Pb have been treated statistically. For routine broad-scale surveys analysis of the unground -80-mesh sediment fraction proves satisfactory. Sampling error between localities in a stream is shown to be less than spectrographic analytical error for many of the elements considered here, except where mineralisation (contamination) occurs, but exceeds the atomic absorption analytical errors in most cases. Unless it it critical to reduce the amount of between-site variability (having regard to analytical errors) in the regional survey, there appears to be no advantage in the use of a more sophisticated sampling technique. The utility of moving-average maps in reducing the width of the confidence belt around the regional 'geochemical surface', and thus compensating to some extent for the sampling errors, is also demonstrated.

It has been suggested that reduction of the iron and manganese phases as far as FeO and MnO is preferred for the complete liberation and selective reduction of the copper, nickel and cobalt oxides in manganese nodules. The oxygen partial pressure/temperature regime suitable for this purpose has been delineated. Free-energy minimisation and thermogravimetric results indicate that the requisite conditions can be achieved if more than 10% of neutral oil is used at temperatures greater than 923 degrees C. Neutral oil content, temperature and roasting time have been optimised to maximise leaching recoveries of Cu, Ni and Co: up to 96% of Cu and Ni and up to 85% of Co can be recovered if 15% of neutral oil is used as a reductant at 973 K for 90 min

An important conclusion of the study is that altering the properties of the granulation water is a practical way of improving the sintering performance of blends that contain porous ores, and more work is under way to investigate other additives. Previous studies of iron ore blends containing pisolite ore showed that losses in sintering productivity were a result of deteriorating green-bed permeability. Pisolite ores are extremely porous and absorb a proportion of the water added during granulation. Although increased water addition could be used to counteract losses in productivity, the current study examined methods of inhibiting water absorption by pisolite ore as a means of improving productivity. Additives were used to alter the properties of the granulating water. With no increase in mix moisture contents pilot-scale sintering studies showed that sugar-based additives gave productivities that are higher than those obtained for a comparable ore blend containing haematite rather than the pisolitic ore. Several techniques of adding the sugar to the sinter mix were examined and found to increase productivity to varying degrees. Theoretical considerations, in some cases supported by experimental results, indicate that sugar-based additives not only inhibited water absorption by porous ore particles but also improved the permeability of the sintering bed. The study also suggested that, contrary to some commonly held views, the highly reactive nature of Yandi ore from Western Australia is beneficial for sintering. Porous ores enabled the formation of a strong sinter at fast flame-front speeds-both good strength and a short sintering time are requirements for high-productivity operation

A probe suitable for on-line measurements of gas hold-up in industrial flotation systems has been developed. It is based on an open cell for measurement of slurry-gas conductivity and a novel syphon cell for measurement of slurry-only conductivity. The desired behaviour of the two cells was demonstrated and estimates of gas hold-up were shown to be in good agreement with independent measurements. The gas hold-up probe was used as a diagnostic tool to assess the operation of flotation columns. Differences in gas hold-up between baffled sections in two industrial columns were detected

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. A lithological and geochemical study revealed significant lateral variation of the interval over 170 km of strike, from about 30 m at the Union Section to 220 m near Brits. The cumulates also become more evolved and leucocratic with distance from the Union Section both towards the NE (Amandelbult) and SE (Impala, Rustenburg and Brits). It is inferred that the persistent heat flux from a putative major feeder zone near the Union Section impaired deposition of felsic cumulates in the vicinity, delaying crystallisation of successive phases in parts of the chamber near the feeder. New influxes were therefore deposited on a footwall of varying thickness and lithology in response to different degrees of crystallisation and accumulation along strike. A study has been undertaken to establish the relationships between the O&K wedge test cutting resistances and the geotechnical parameters of rock materials in the context of bucket-wheel excavator operation. Prediction equations were formed to estimate the cutting resistance from the geotechnical parameters by multiple regression analysis. Freeze sampling yields representative and quantitative data that, when combined with information on the sedimentology of gravel-bed rivers, may facilitate the development of improved dispersion models for source detection. Rittinger's and Bond's descriptions of rock crushing relate the energy input required to fracture rock and the surface energy required to form new fractures to the change in specific surface area of feed and product during comminution. The potential applicability of this approach to blasting is illustrated, using the results of data from bench blasting tests on Pinal schists and production blasting of Carboniferous limestones. The approach contributes to understanding of the mechanisms involved in blasting and to the design of test blasts. A modified form is presented of the relationship between blasting energy, specific surface area of the muckpile and a rock energy constant related to the discontinuity structure of the rock. The modified equation fits observed data and offers a simple basis for further experiments

The rate of reaction between iron oxides and carbonaceous materials, agglomerated as pellets, was studied experimentally by measuring the weight loss as a function of time. The effects of temperature, carbon type, inert gas flow rate, pellet size and additions (sodium. carbonate and Portland cement) were determined. It was shown that the value of the apparent activation energy can display large deviations under different experimental conditions; in the present work it was found to be 226.6 kJ/mol. The reaction with coke is slower than with charcoal, and the rate increases as the flow of inert gas in the reaction vessel decreases. Comparison of the rates for pellets of different sizes has shown that for small pellets the initial rate is faster but that it slows down at high conversions owing to the penetration of inert gas into the pellet. Additions of sodium carbonate and Portland cement increase the rate; sodium. carbonate promotes the catalysis of the Boudouard reaction, which is the slowest of the partial reactions. Middle Proterozoic sulphide ore mineralisation occurs in isolated blocks of the NE-SW trending Delhi fold belt composed of Delhi Supergroup rocks. The Ajari-Basantgarh-Pipela belt forms part of the longest, widest and westernmost tectonic unit of the Delhi fold belt and consists of amphibolites, metapelites, quartzites and carbonates. The metapelite lenses and associated amphibolites host pyritic copper mineralisation. Mineralisation takes the form of sheet-like bodies consisting of ore lenses of various sizes interlayered with host or associated rocks. Massive, banded and disseminated varieties of ore are found. Pyrite is dominant with subordinate chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Pyrrhotite, galena, cubanite, mackinawite, marcasite and freibergite constitute the minor minerals. The characteristic features of the ores suggest a possible correlation with Besshi-type deposits, and the closely associated amphibolites are interpreted as low-K tholeiites of a fore-arc setting

Smelting of Cu anode slimes involves the use of a slag to hold the oxidised Cu, but some Ag is also inevitably oxidised to the slag. The solubility of Ag in sodium silicate slags at 1 100 and 1 150 degrees C has now been determined over a very wide range of oxygen partial pressures. Silver was found to be present in the slags both as neutral atoms and as AgO(0.5). The activity coefficient for atomic Ag was a very strong function of slag composition and temperature, whereas that for AgO(0.5) was much less affected by slag composition and was almost independent of temperature over the limited range examined. The results reveal that the dissolved Ag cannot be fully recovered by reduction of the slag with very reducing gases

Mechanical data from a rockbolt drilling machine, such as torque, thrust, revolution and stroke, are useful for understanding the geological and geomechanical conditions around roadways and hence selecting the optimum bolt type and density. Laboratory experiments showed that the level of torque or thrust reflects differences in rock type, with separation of strata and cracks appearing as a specific pattern. Algorithms of neural networks based on adaptive resonance theory and back-propagation were used to extract the pattern and estimate the location of discontinuities. For field testing in an underground coal mine, a prototype data acquisition system was attached to a portable drilling machine. Several sets of logging data from one locality were combined to construct a two-dimensional model of the strata, from which the slope angles of discontinuity faces could be estimated

A modified Hallimond tube is described which allows the determination of the ultimate recovery R and the flotation rate constant k in a single, continuous experiment. The range of fine particles which can be satisfactorily floated with the modified apparatus can be extended by increasing the length of the bottom part of the tube. Findings suggest that pyrite and arsenopyrite can be separated in alkaline suspension using the so-called F series of collectors. Lime was found to act as a depressant. The collectors operate under pH and dosage control and do not require other depressants. Collectors used in the study were thio-amine (a cationic surfactant) and alkyl propionamide (a non-ionic surfactant)

DETA exhibits a highly selective depressant action on pyrrhotite without adversely affecting the collectorless flotability of pentlandite and chalcopyrite in nickel-copper ores of the Sudbury region. A simplified Eh-pH diagram has been constructed to illustrate the extended stability of elemental sulphur and to explain the collectorless flotation of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Cu and Ni ions, which are known to exist on the surface of pyrrhotite, promote the flotation of this mineral whether a collector is present or not. Thermodynamic calculations indicate that the action of DETA involves the sequestration of Cu and Ni ions from surfaces under a wide range of redox conditions; analysis of flotation test filtrate indicates as much as a 20-fold increase in the concentration of Ni and Cu ions. It appears that DETA may enhance the self-hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite and pentlandite by exposing more of the sulphur-rich surface sites for bubble contact in flotation. Roadstone production requires the generation of non-flaky material, as outlined in British Standard 812 section 105.1; with respect to this criterion, a mathematical model of a cone crusher must be able to predict the flakiness index of a particular size range as determined by the relationship between thickness and nominal size. The Whiten cone crusher model utilises breakage and classification functions to predict a product particle size distribution only, so a shape function has been proposed that is based on a phenomenological approach, taking into account the transfer between flaky and non-flaky material at each stage of breakage. Considerable borehole investigation work has been completed at a proposed site at Sellafield in Cumbria, supplemented by seismic surveys, other geophysical sensing and geological mapping. The focussing of investigation on the rock mass itself will be achieved by means of the planned underground rock characterisation facility, giving access to depths of about 800 m in the strong, low-permeability basement rocks of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group. Characterisation work undertaken during the sinking phase and interaction with continuing surface-based exploration and monitoring should permit a firmer assessment of the long-term safety of a repository. Key considerations in the choice of a design for the repository include the waste handling method, underground inlet cell, underground vaults, vault environment and environmental effects

Paper presented at Geofluids '93, held in Torquay, UK, 4-7 May 1993. The tin field consists of a fragment of Lower Proterozoic volcanosedimentary rocks surrounded by granitoids. Almost all the significant deposits are hosted by arkoses and are classified as replacement and space-filling types, with particular styles of mineralisation dominating at different mines. Petrological and geochemical investigation of borehole cores from four centres indicated the presence of a stratified zone 500-600 m thick and continuous over at least 20 km along strike, consisting of pervasively altered clastic arenitic sediments. The alteration is zoned into a grey-green sodic albitised footwall, an 80 m thick sericitised-tourmalinised sulphidic tin zone and a red haematitic potassic hanging-wall. The zoning and the localisation of three cassiterite phases are consistent with the tectonic history and with multiple pulses of stanniferous hydrothermal fluids derived from late differentiates of the granites over a prolonged period. Areas of high fracture density acted as conduits for the fluids, whose initially rapid ascent was retarded by decreasing pressure contrast, limited development of fracturing and/or impermeable shaly arkose to cause lateral spreading and pervasive alteration over a broad, stratified front. Lateral overlapping of local fronts at the various centres suggests a continuous zone, while the many petrological and geochemical similarities point to a shared fluid composition
