It is recognised that presplitting is a special case in blasting which requires the reduction of conventional explosive pressures in order to avoid excessive rock damage. Two routes to achieving this are the use of reduced density explosives or the practice of decoupling the explosive from the blasthole walls. Applications of two such systems in large diameter, deep blastholes are described. Both systems were tested in presplits alongside sections charged with decks of conventional explosives.

Underwater blasting causes not only ground shock but water-shock. Underwater shock attenuates less with range from the explosive source than ground shock and has the potential for killing fish or marine mammals or for damaging marine structures. The collapse and subsequent oscillation of the gas cavity surrounding the detonation can sometimes produce a greater impulse than the initial shock wave from the detonation. The airblast from underwater detonations can range from nuisance levels to damaging levels.

This paper examines the aspects of differing types of blasting cuts in underground headings with consideration to the reduction of number of holes and costs. At least one comparison study is related where costs per advance meter were significantly improved. The technical aspect of the paper covers a study of the effects of various blasthole delay intervals on resulting crater volume, ground vibration, and fragmentation for six hole V-cuts.

This paper discusses problems encountered when blasting under rivers for pipeline crossings. Many pipelines have recently been laid under the Danube River. Great care had to be taken to determine limits of detonation impulses from blasting operations in order that no damage would occur to structures at the water's edge, boats, and swimmers. Equations were derived from the results of this study which enable prediction of impulse levels.

Quadrex-L is a two component liquid explosive which was developed by J. S. Brower & Associates, Inc. to facilitate handling and shipping, and use in unique applications, while emphasizing safety. It may be advantageously used for all explosive applications. Quadrex-L can be introduced into a preinstalled container configuration and may be easily drained or flushed from these containers when necessary to do so. This characteristic can be effectively utilized to reduce the hazard period during assembly or disassembly operations.

A large open-cast limestone mine had its blasting operations severely restricted by the imposition of limiting PPV levels to protect a water pipe-line passing through the mine property. Attempts were made to measure the strains induced in the pipe by ground vibrations, so that a less restrictive blasting limitation could be established on a scientific basis.

The four methods of reclamation now in use are reviewed, and their advantages and disadvantages are noted. Prediction of fragmentation in Taconite Mining is an important aid to blasting engineers. A simple theory relates the intensity of radial fracture per unit length to distance from the borehole, from which a power law for mass fraction passing versus size is derived. For the lower end of the size distribution, the equation agrees well with several published examples of fragmentation from sieving of full scale blasts. Large size fragments arise from interaction of fractures from neighboring holes and pre-existing joints. Analysis of two assumptions regarding radial fracture interaction shows that complex fragmentation distributions can arise from the simple mechanisms proposed. Measured fragmentation falls between the two extremes calculated.

Homestake Mining Corporations' open cut operation at Lead SD. experienced a highwall failure in October of 1993. The failure released a 75' section of rock wall at the 5280' level. It came to rest on the 5200' safety bench. Since work was in progress below the failure, this rock had to be removed for safety.
