The application of secondary producing methods for recovering additional oil from known fields has been recognized for many years as important to the economy of the nation. One of the most successful secondary methods is waterflooding, which conserves our natural resources by preventing premature abandoment of stripper leases and revitalizing previously abandoned areas. Waterflooding as a secondary-recovery method was introduced into the Midcontinent region in 1931, and its use as such has become widespread. As with most new methods, the most favorable fields and leases received primary attention, whereas those with viscous oil or less favorable sand characteristics were bypassed. The assembly procedures for nine different wire rope terminations used in the mining industry are presented in a format and manner to facilitate training and to provide points where inspection of the termination should be performed. The nine terminations addressed are: Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve & Thimble, Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve, Wedge Socket, Swaged Socket, Turn Back Loop with Sleeve & Thimble, Thimble Splice with Four Tucks, U-Bolt Clip & Thimble, Zinc Poured Socket, and Epoxy Resin Poured Socket. The manual was prepared to be used primarily for field type mining operations or training where high capacity machinery is quite limited. It is nut the intent of this manual to suggest that the procedures presented are those to be used by manufacturers or other commercial enterprizes. A different set of procedures may be more appropriate where ideal space and equipment resources are available. The assembly procedures were derived from standard industrial practice, manufacturer's recommendations, and the open literature on the subject. These same procedures were used to prapare test specimens for an extensive series of pull and axial fatigue tests. The results of these tests indicate that these procedures are satisfactory in all respects. This manual is to be used as part of a complete training program. Although a brief glossary is included, there has been no attempt to make this a primer on wire rope. The selection of wire rope termination hardware, like the selection of the wire rope, is a subject not covered by this manual. The reader is cautioned that there are various sources for such hardware and this selection must be done carefully.

This work was done to provide thermodynamic, electrical, physical, and compositional data on the seeded combustion plasmas of seven coals for the design of MHD generators. The systems were assumed to be at equilibrium, and the design data were generated by solving for the composition of both gas and liquid phases with a digital computer. The coals reported in this study include a western subbituminous, a Pennsylvania anthracite, and five representative bituminous coals. The data include dewpoint temperatures of both slag and seed. A Mollier diagram for each coal is given to allow graphical generator calculations.

The Bureau of Mines used a windowed cell to measure the phase-boundary pressures of two related series of gas-condensate fluid mixtures. Normal butane was added to the mixtures incrementally to determine its effectiveness for lowering phase-boundary pressure. All the experimental data were correlated, so that the pressure required to maintain light oils mixed with natural gas in the single phase may be computed for secondary recovery applications. The heavy hydrocarbon parts of the mixtures were distillation fractions of a Gulf Coast condensate. Intermediate normal hydrocarbons in the butane-heptane range and natural gas were added to the fractions in selected proportions, so that phase-diagram pressures of 26 fluids were actually studied. The experimental range of temperatures was 50° to 280° F. Two correlations were developed to represent phase-boundary pressures by means of a polynomial. Independent variables represent natural gas content, disparity of properties of components comprising the mixtures, and temperature. A fourth variable, for one correlation only, was the quantity of normal butane added to the original mixtures. The latter correlation with four independent variables contains 15 coefficients and is estimated to be accurate to 135 psi.

Dump site injuries occur in all major mineral industries. Working in elevated areas near an edge is a common hazard for operators of off-highway mobile mining equipment. In this Information Circular (IC), serious injuries involving haulage trucks working at dump sites are examined for the period 1988 to 1997. Data were acquired from injury reports gathered by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The IC is organized into three sections. The first presents an overview of the frequency and severity of injuries. The second analyzes injury characteristics using MSHA-defined data fields and author-defined injury classifications. Key findings are discussed in the third section. In summary, 370 serious injuries were identified that involved trucks at dump sites, of which 26 were fatalities. Although haulage truck activities at dump sites resulted in a small proportion of the total number of injuries at surface mines, these injuries were much more likely to result in death or significant amounts of lost time than most other surface mine injuries. These findings support the belief that haulage truck activities at dump sites are worthy of continued study by those interested in improving the health and safety of workers at surface mines.

This report presents results of recent Bureau of Mines research to establish the probability of spark ignition as a function of current (or voltage, for capacitor circuits) for resistive, inductive, and ca-pacitive circuits in 8.3% methane-air atmospheres. The data presented quantify the explosion hazard created when low-power electronic devices catastrophically fail in an explosive mine atmosphere. Previous litera-ture dealt with levels of probability between 10-3 and 10-4. This re-port extends the probability data to levels as low as 10-7. This study has verified that when the probability of ignition, PI, is plotted on a log-log coordinate system versus the current (or voltage), a continuous, straight-line relationship is formed. An interesting result that can be statistically hypothesized is that at some low level of igniting current the ignition process ceases altogether.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines identified respirable dust sources and controls on four continuous auger mining sections, two with relatively low dust levels and two with high levels. Factors adversely affecting dust levels included auger equipment design, continuous haulage, and low seam height. Dust controls included ventilation practices and spray systems. Maximizing airflow seemed to reduce dust levels most. Air leakage and shock loss can be reduced by constructing stoppings with brushed-on mortar containing fiberglass and by keeping areas between curtains and ribs free from obstructions and storing equipment not essential for face activities in outby crosscuts. Curtain configuration, setback distance, and installation can also affect dust levels. Use of both blowing and exhausting curtains is the most effective configuration. Setbacks from the face should not exceed 15 ft. Installing brattice curtains at least 5.5 ft from ribs, when entries are 26 ft wide, minimizes velocity head. Installing curtains tightly against the mine roof and floor helps maintain a forward airflow movement in the center of the mine heading; curtain overlap can create a tighter seal. The wet-auger spray system also effectively controls dust, provided the mine is already exercising good ventilation practices.

This report describes the dropping - mercury electrode , its use in analysis , and the procedure of the Health Division of the Bureau of Mines in determining lead , cadmium , and zinc . The dropping - mercury electrode or polarograph is an electrolytic device , one electrode of which consists of mercury issuing in small drops from a capillary tube . Such electrodes have been in existence for more than 50 years, but they were not used for analytical purposes until about 1922.6/ Developments since have been rapid , especially in Czechoslovakia , Germany , Italy, and Japan and more recently in the United States . A recent bibliography / contains references to, 825 articles issued from 1903 through 1940. In 1939 Kolthoff and Lingane presented the first comprehensive critical review, in English , of the device and its use in analysis . They have recently issued a book on the same subject. Similar information also is included in a recent book10/ by Kolthoff and Laitinen . Much of the information in this and the two following sections on this device and its use in analysis was obtained from these three publications . The use of the dropping - mercury electrode in analysis is based upon the fact that the kind and amount of electro - reducible and electro - oxidizable constituents in solution can be determined from the current -voltage relationships revealed by this electrode or electrolytic device .

Intensive investigations of domestic manganese deposits were conducted by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey during the earlier part of the war minerals investigations when there was doubt that the quantity of manganese needed to produce the greatly increased tonnage of steel demanded for war supplies could' to obtained from its customary sources. Domestic deposits of ores that contain sufficient manganese for direct production of ferromanganese essential in steel Manufacture are generally small, and the bulk of the supply is imported. One of the few large deposits of low-grade manganese ore known in the United States is in the Artillery Peale district in southern Mohave County, Ariz. Manganiforous sediments underlie a very large area. Several large groups of claims, covering the most of the manganese-bearing ground, wore assembled in 1929 and 1930. The greater part of this area was leased by the M. A. Hanna Co. in 1937. Investigations by engineers and geologists for this company revealed that the average content of manganese is very low; but that the Maggio Canyon area, about 180 acres, contains higher-grade material. The company put down 28 vertical diamond-drill holds to explore this ground, under the direction of B. N. Wobbor, geologist.

"The contemplated use of dichloro-difluoro methane in domestic and commercial refrigerating appliances and in air-conditioning equipment for Public buildings and possibly homes, brings attention to the health hazards involved in a wide potential exposure of the public to vapors of another new product, and for the first time to vapors of an organic fluorine compound. The objective in the development of this new refrigerant, however, has been the mitigation of health and explosion hazards in automatic refrigeration, and accordingly these factors have been given primary attention. Early in the development, the Bureau of Mines was requested to make a laboratory study of the toxicity and potential hazard:"" and it was on the basis of the results of this work and the results of a preliminary investigation made in another laboratory5 that the compound has been selected for commercial use. Although the investigation conducted by the Bureau of Mines is still in progress, information has been obtained to indicate the order of the toxicity and the magnitude of the health hazards involved in the use of dichloro-difluoro methane as a refrigerant. The following is a summarized report of the work completed to date:Additionally work rich is in progress at the present time includes a determination of the lethal time-concentration curve for animals and a study of the response of persons within the range of safe concentrations.The writers desire to jive acknowledgment to T E. The ferberite district of Boulder County, Colo., has been an important producer of tungsten since 1900. During World War I, high prices for tungston concontrates resulted in a brief period of intense activity, and the production in 1917 was 2,707 tons of 60 percent W03 concentrates. Production declined thereafter, and in 19.2 the tungsten produced in Boulder County represented about 4 percent of the Nation's output, being exceeded only by the scheelite production in California, Nevada, and Idaho. Boulder County has boon an important source: of tungsten in the Korean emergency; the present report does not describe this recent activity, as it will be covered by a future publication. Tungsten occurs in small ore shoots of narrow and irregular veins. Most of the ore shoots have been found outcropping on the surface. Core drilling; has been used by the larger operators to explore for new veins and to locate extensions of known veins.

The National Safety Competition was inaugurated in 1925 by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the Explosives Engineer. In the first nationwide contest, 210 mines and quarries were enrolled. In 1962, the thirty-eighth anniversary of the competition, 910 mines and quarries were enrolled. These participating plants were worked a total of 133,292,989 man-hours. Of the enrolled plants, 415 achieved injury-free operations for the year, the largest number of perfect safety records in the history of the contest.

Of the enrolled plants, 415 achieved injury-free operations tar the year, the largest number of perfect safety records in the history of the contest. In 1961 and 1962, the National Safety Competition was conducted and sponsored by the Bureau of Mines. In January 1963, the American Mining Congress became a cosponsor and participated with the Bureau in the award activities related to the 1962 contest. The basic purpose of the competition is to stimulate employees to work safely and too give impetus to the building of better accident-prevention programs. A well-designed and efficient safety program helps a company economically by cutting costs, preventing damage to equipment and materials, and reducing nonproductive delays. An effective safety program benefits the employee more directly because his injuries cause personal suffering, lost time, and lower living standards for his family. Since both have much to gain, management and workers should cooperate closely to eliminate disabling work injuries. The greater contest participation and the larger number of perfect safety records indicate increasing safety consciousness on the part of management and employees.

Miners in underground coal mines experience prolonged exposure to high noise levels, often with A-weighted sound levels in excess of 90 dB. Field tests have shown that the continuous miner conveyor is a dominant noise source. This paper will identify the most significant noise-radiating surfaces on the continuous miner tail section using vibration levels and surface areas to estimate the sound power levels of each surface. In addition, using five test cases, this study will examine the effects of three engineering noise controls on the surface-averaged vibration levels and average sound levels measured with four microphones located two meters from the tail section. The noise-radiating surfaces of the conveyor’s tail section include the top and bottom decks, the sideboards, and the flex plates. Emphasis is placed on the changes in the estimated sound power levels in the 500 – 2500 Hz 1/3-octave bands since this frequency range accounts for 80-85% of the sound energy near the tail section. The results show that the bottom deck is the most significant noise radiator for the untreated miner. Installing a coated bottom deck reduces the estimated sound power level radiated from the bottom deck by 11 dB and the average sound level by 2 dB. Using a coated tail roller results in reductions of the estimated sound power levels for individual components from 1 to 4 dBand reduces the average sound level by 2 dB. Coating the slide plate has little effect on both the estimated radiated sound power levels and the average sound level. The test results indicate that modifications that reduce flex plate vibration and reduce energy transfer from the tail roller into the tail section will be effective in reducing noise when combined with a coated tail roller and coated return deck.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. The objective of this condensed handbook is to provide the inspector with guidance for recognizing hazards from inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas of underground and surface coal mining and processing facilities and evaluating these hazards by collecting samples or making field determinations and interpreting the analytical results. It will be carried with the inspectors during their surveys. The complete handbook should be left in their offices except for Appendix II which lists the compositions of products found in previous surveys. There are several portions of the condensed handbook which should prove most useful to the inspectors. At the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., reports are prepared from time to time on results of washability studies of coal from important beds in the Southern Appalachian region. The investigations that provide the material for these reports are made by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the mine operators. The principal objective of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data to aid in determining the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's reserves, particularly of coking coals. Such information is also important from the standpoint of conservation, because it facilitates the selection of preparation methods that will yield an acceptable product with a minimum loss of coal to the rejects.

The molecular species occurring at the mineral-reagent interface of the galena-aqueous potassium ethyl xanthate system was studied by developing a technique for using an attenuated reflection method in conjunction with standard infrared spectroscopy procedures. Lead ethyl xanthate was detected from the infrared spectra of all galena surfaces treated in the pH range of 7 to 11. At pH 8.5, lead ethyl xanthate formed as a film chemically bonded to the galena surface. A solvent extraction sampling method was employed with infrared spectroscopy to obtain quantitative data on the lead ethyl xanthate removed from the galena surface. The data showed that between pH 7 and 11 thy quantity of lead ethyl xanthate physically adsorbed decreased as the pH was decreased; in the same pH range, the quantity of free lad ethyl xanthate in the aqueous medium remained constant, and the amount of unreacted xanthate varied.

In 1983, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resources in the Carrizo Gorge Wilderness Study Area (WSA). The 14,571-acre WSA, located 42 miles east of El Centro, CA, is underlain primarily by Mesozoic granitic rocks and pre-Cretaceous metasedimentary rocks. Six prospects were found within the WSA and two mines are adjacent to it. Mineral deposits within the WSA have had insufficient development and rock exposures for calculating resources. The WSA contains no identified mineral resources; however, further exploration may disclose gem quality minerals. Two mines adjacent to the WSA, the Pack Rat and Beebe Hole, have produced gem quality kunzite and aquamarine from pegmatite dikes. According to the owners, a significant amount of gem minerals have been mined here in the last decade. Based on past production and the characteristic minerals indicating gem-bearing pockets, additional pockets are likely. Similar pegmatite dikes occur from Mt. Tule to Carrizo Gorge and may contain gem-bearing pockets. Pegmatite dikes also occur in the WSA near Rockhouse Canyon, but contained few of the mineral associations indicative of gem-bearing pockets. Manganese occurrences north of the Beebe Hole and Packrat Mines and within the WSA contain low concentrations of manganese. Significant sand and gravel were not identified. There is no evidence of deposits of oil and gas, or geothermal energy.
