Uniaxial testing was performed on coal specimens to determine the time-dependent response. The testing was carried out on coal from six mine sites throughout the Western United States and Pennsylvania. Testing configurations were varied to allow analysis of moisture dependency, stress level and specimen orientation. Several theories were presented for the behavior of coal due to moisture diffusion. Experimental results showed the correlation between the theories and the actual material response. Coal deformation was found to be highly dependent on the moisture level of the testing environment. Moisture migration causes drying and shrinkage which lead to progressive degradation of the material. The coal tested experienced a rebound if saturated after a period of drying. This type of time-dependent behavior overshadows the dependence on the applied stress level, which, however, still produces a noticeable creep behavior. Analysis of one series of creep test results was performed. A relationship was developed on the basis of a simplified rheological model to describe the coal response to uniaxial stress. Previous empirical formulations in the form of power laws were compared and their deficiencies pointed out.

The technical feasibility of using energy from explosive ignitions of coal dust to pump water was .demonstrated in an exploratory investigation. Ignition of small amounts of pulverized coal that were dispersed in air over columns of water pumped up to 5.3 gallons of water per cycle when operated against a head of 30.75 feet. Water displacement was accomplished by either manual or automatic operation through a single cycle, and by automatic operation through a continuous series of cycles of I-minute duration. Operating through single cycles, slurries containing up to 3 pounds of coal and 4.6 gallons of water were also pumped. Possible uses of an efficient coal-fired pump would include pumping water for irrigation purposes, removing water from mines, transporting coal from mines in the form of a slurry, and pumping water to elevated reservoirs at electric powerplants so that it could be used to generate electricity during peak periods of demand.

Pulverized high- volatile A bituminous coal was gasified with oxygen and superheated steam in a pressure - gasification pilot plant equipped for steampickup feeding . The pilot plant operated satisfactorily at relatively high steam- to - coal ratios , but steam- to - coal ratios could not be reduced much below 0.5 lb / lb without condensation of steam or softening of the coal . Carbon gasified , gas composition , and coal and oxygen requirements were essentially the same as for a pilot plant equipped with a fluidized coal feeder . Average results from the pilot plant equipped for steam- pickup feeding were coal requirement , 37.3 lb/M ( 1,000 ) scf of CO + H₂ produced ; oxygen requirement , 358 scf /M scf CO + H₂ produced ; and carbon gasified , 87.7 percent .

RECORD production of portland cement, crushed limestone, marble, lime, and clays highlighted the mineral industry of Alabama in 1959. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in production of bauxite, and third in output of iron ore, scrap mica, and native asphalt. Alabama's mineral industry was dominated by the mining and processing of coal and iron ore, which accounted for 51 percent of the total value of production in 1958 and 1959. Other important industries were cement manufacturing, petroleum, and stone quarrying. Leading companies were Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of United States Steel Corp. (coal;. iron ore, limestone, lime, and magnesium compounds), Southern Cement Co. Division of American-Marietta Co. (cement, lime, limestone, and miscellaneous clay) , Woodward Iron Co. (coal and iron ore), Alabama Power Co. (coal), and Ideal Cement Co. (cement lime, and miscellaneous clay) .

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Office for Mine Safety and Health Research, is investigating the geologic and mining factors influencing the migration of longwall gob gas. One goal of these studies is to optimize methane drainage strategies to reduce the volume of gob gas that reaches the underground workplace. As part of this research effort, longwall gob gas flow paths in a mine operating in the Pittsburgh Coalbed, PA, were investigated using SF6 tracer gas. Tracer gas released into the ventilation airflow underground generally stayed in the bleeder system and was vented at the associated bleeder fan shafts. Tracer gas injected into an inactive (intaking) gob gas venthole migrated to the two inby producing ventholes on the study panel, indicating that all three ventholes were in communication. The tracer gas that was injected into the gob generally stayed in the gob and only migrated to the ventilation system in response to the venthole on the study panel closest to the injection hole going off production. Tracer gas flow velocities in the longwall gob reservoir and factors influencing the production performance of gob gas ventholes in the study area are also discussed.

A method of monitoring roof stability in underground mines by detecting the changes in resistivity of roof material was tested. The device built by the USBM was tested over a 16 month period at the White Pine Copper Mine in White Pine, Michigan. Three falls of ground were monitored by means of as many as 11 sensors. Data indicate a correlation between changes in resistivity and impending structural failure. Problems were encountered with the high roof electrode impedance in the winter and spring due to the drying out of the roof material. Difficulties also developed in obtaining a permanent bond between the roof rock, the conductive epoxy and the electrode plate. Some data were lost due to timer and fuse problems within the unit. These were eventually rectified.

Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. The United States Bureau of Mines contracted Norecol to prepare a report identifying the regulatory processes associated with metal mine development in British Columbia using the Snip Mine as a case study. The intent of this study is to assist industry and regulatory agencies in developing understanding as to differences in objectives, perspectives and operating methods. The case study will be incorporated into a larger report summarizing the comparative advantages and disadvantages of metal mine permitting in British Columbia and Alaska. The purpose of the report is to identify the development schedule and permitting process at Snip which will assist the U.S. Bureau of Mines in suggesting improvements in environmental review and permitting processes for mine developments. The report provides an abstract of the environmental assessment review processes in Canada and the Mine Development Review Process in British Columbia and provides an understanding of the linkages between policy, legislation, and environmental review.

"INTRODUCTION As virtually no published data are available on the sintering of fine, minus-100-mesh, ferrograde manganese ores, it is most opportune to present data on the amenability of various fine ores and mill products to the sintering process. These data cover the sintering or nodulizing of finely crushed, high-grade pyrolusite and rhodochrosite ores, sintering of manganese carbonate flotation concentrate, sintering or nodulizing the calcine from the deleading of a manganese oxide flotation concentrate, and sintering the calcines made in a Herreshoff furnace from the treatment of manganese sulfate products.If finely sized products are to be smelted in the present electric or blast ferromanganese furnaces, they must be sintered or nodulized. The only specification as to the size of the sintered or nodulized product is that it must pass a 6-inch screen and not contain over 1t-1/2 percent minus 20-mesh material. The minimum-maximum size has not been established. Undoubtedly this opti mum size will be set by the ferromanganese industry when ample quantities of manganese oxide sinters have been smelted."

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by The Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fourth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on Figure 13 in Volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township-is given with the discussion covering that area.

For shortwall mining to be profitable, the additional capital investment of about $1 million for shortwall roof supports must be offset by decreased total operating costs and/or increased coal production. The Bureau of Mines therefore conducted a demonstration project to compare shortwall and room-and-pillar mining. Daily two-shift production from the bureau of Mines-Beth-Elkhorn Corp. shortwall demonstration n project averaged 975 tons of raw coal, compared with 905 tons from a room-and-pillar unit operating undo r similar conditions. The estimated direct operating costs for the shortwall and room-and-pillar unite were $4.21 and $4.03 pier ton, respectively. The profitability of the shortwall system was found to depend not only on the increased depreciation cost of the powered roof supports and the decreased cost of supplies and materials but also on such factors as the fixed and variable indirect costs and the selling price of the coal. Shortwall mining was demonstrated to be a viable alternative to room-and-pillar mining.

While coal occurs beneath about 18 percent of Utah, only 4 percent of the state has minable reserves. Utah's coal fields are mostly bituminous. Current coal production in Utah is largely by underground mining, making Utah unique among the coal-producing states. Most coal seams are more than 8 feet thick. Utah's coal resources are about 6.3 billion tons, 1.3 percent of the national reserve. Most of Utah's coal resources are held by the Federal Government and Indian tribes and are mined under lease. The climate of the Utah coal region is characterized by hot, dry summers and cold, relatively moist winters. Normal precipition varies from 6 inches in the lower valleys to more than 40 inches on some high plateaus. The growing season ranges from 5 months in some valleys to less than 3 months in mountainous regions. These extreme climatic conditions make reclamation difficult. Utah gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved January 21, 1981. Full program approval was obtained March 7, 1983. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 3,1983. A Federal Lands Cooperative Agreement was signed in March 1987; Utah performs all enforcement activities and some permitting activities on federal lands.

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States increased 22% in value over that of 1982 to $320 million; of which, 59% was manufactured abrasive, 35% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 6% was natural abrasive. Production value of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, remained virtually unchanged. Production of crude tripol, a porous siliceous rock, decreased slightly; however, shipments of processed tripoli increased 13% in quantity and 32% in value. Production of garnet, an abundant iron-aluminum silicate, continued to increase primarily because of further increases in production from one plant that had completed an expansion program in late 1981. Production of special silica stone, both crude and finished, decreased in 1983 because of reduced demand for oilstones

Pennsylvania anthracite coal is almost universally recognized to be the solid fuel best suited for domestic use when cleanliness , convenience and cost are considered . At various times and in various localities , however, conditions so affect the supply that it becomes insufficient or is too high in price and recourse must be had to other fuels as substitutes . In practically every district in the United States where anthracite has been the common domestic fuel , some other fuel is available as a substitute . In even the most severe climates such fuels are used either as emergency substitutes for anthracite , or as the ordinary domestic fuel . There may be some drawback to the use of such fuel , such as the need of more frequent attention to the furnace , smoke , soot and dust , in the case of solid fuels lower in price than anthracite , but these inconveniences must be accepted as necessary accompaniments to a decreased fuel bill . The cleanliness and ease of handling anthracite in the house must be considered in the light of a luxury and a higher cost of heating with this fuel must be expected . That a growing number of people are willing to pay for such added convenience is evident from the increasing mumber of heating installations using oil , gas and electricity , all of which are more convenient and usually more expensive even than anthracite .

Laboratory and underground studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the effectiveness of a water-powered scrubber and a brattice partition to create a clean split of air for longwall workers at the tailgate. In simulated laboratory tests, the system was very effective in creating a clean split of air. Observed system efficiencies were 74 and 84 pct with induced airflows of approximately 2,000 and 2,500 cfm, respectively. Underground evaluations indicated that the system was capable of reducing respirable dust at the tailgate. The first underground evaluation resulted in protection efficiencies of 30.7 and 42.5 pct at scrubber water pressures of 150 and 450 psig, respectively. A 33.7-pct protection efficiency was observed in the second underground evaluation with a modified partition and the scrubber operating at 250-psig water pressure. To be most effective, the system should have the scrubber operating at a flowrate of 10 gpm at 500 psig to deliver a maximum quantity of cleaned air behind a well-sealed partition.

This circular, which is a revision and combination of two previous publications,3 4/ presents information on the different types of equipment that may be used to analyze mine atmospheres, with particular reference to the application and limitations of each type. Such information is frequently requested by mining companies, State mining departments, and other agencies concerned with safety in mining who wish advice regarding methods of analysis of mine atmospheres and the equipment necessary for establishing laboratories for that purpose. Since the Haldane-type apparatus is particularly applicable to the accurate determination of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and combustible gases such as methane in mine atmospheres, that apparatus and the method of operation are described in detail. The circular presents results of a critical study of the accuracy attainable with the Haldane-type apparatus in the determination of methane in concentrations of the order of 0.25 percent, by volume. Analytical procedures involved in the other methods discussed are presented in publications referenced in this circular. Information is given also on the various accessory equipment needed in a laboratory for the analysis of mine atmospheres, and suggestions on laboratory design are included.
