The Bureau of Mines conducted a large-scale (6.4 t), long-term (2,165 days) test to gain a better understanding of the leaching characteristics of chalcopyritic ores. An ore sample containing 0.77 pct Cu was leached in a fiberglass column by downward percolation of acidified ferric sulfate solutions. Three sets of leaching conditions were investigated: (1) ambient temperature leaching, (2) elevated temperature (50° to 60° C) leaching, and (3) elevated temperature leaching after inoculation with thermophilic bacteria. Leaching at ambient temperature resulted in a copper extraction rate of 0.44 pct per 100 days. Increasing the temperature to 50° to 60° C resulted in decreased activity of natural mesophilic bacteria, and the leaching rate decreased to 0.22 pct per 100 days. The pH was lowered from 2.0 to 1.6, and nutrient solutions that contained thermophilic bacteria were added. This procedure resulted in an increase in the ferric-to-ferrous iron ratio and an increase in the copper leaching rate. However, the increased leaching rate was not sustained, and 120 days after inoculation the bacterial activity declined, the ferrous iron content increased, and the copper leaching rate decreased.

Mine One General. The first summer field trip for the purpose of collecting data on open-pit metal mine grounding systems was marred by the fact that the group's ground test instrument was damaged in transit and proved to be inoperative. Fortunately, the mine personnel had a similar instrument which was then used for all tests. System Description. Power is purchased from the utility at either 69 or 100 kV. This is transformed to 4160 V at the pit substations and distributed around the periphery of the pit via a "ring bus." The three phase wires and the safety-ground conductor are carried on a conventional wooden pole and cross-arm support structure. At key loca¬tions, overhead feeders carry power from the ring bus down over the benches and into the pit. Each overhead feeder is terminated at a switchhouse, from which an SHD-GC trailing cable supplies power to the electric loading shovels. Each pit substation has a main or system-ground mat, installed by the utility, and a separate safety-ground mat, which is constructed by mine personnel. Three of the safety-ground mats are quite old, and personnel at the mine could not recall what type of construction was used. However, records are available on the fourth mat and construc¬tion details are shown in Figure 64. The Coast Range subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) extends from the Canadian border north of the community of Skagway, southerly to Tracy Arm. It is bounded by the international boundary on the north and eastern edges. The Ferebee Glacier and Lynn Canal mark the western boundary, extending south to the Berners Bay region. From Berners Bay south, the western boundary is the eastern boundary of the Juneau Gold Belt (fig. E-l). The city of Skagway (fig. E-2) is the only developed community within the confines of the subarea. Skagway was originally established as a port for the Klondike gold rush of 1898. Recently, Skagway has gained prominence as a port for shipping goods into and mineral products out of Yukon Territory (fig. E-3). Skagway has also developed a thriving tourist industry based on its Alaskan traditions. The community of Skagway maintains a paved airstrip which is suitable for use by small multi-engine aircraft. Several regional air carriers serve Skag-way with frequent scheduled flights, especially during the summer months. Helicopter charter services are available from Skagway during the summer months.

Miner?s exposure to dust remains a top concern among regulatory agencies, particularly at production facilities with high levels of silica. This respirable dust is present in almost all operations and is a direct cause of the deadly disease silicosis. Silica is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth and is a threat at all operations, especial-ly granite and sand and gravel facilities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health continues to analyze silica?s threat. The institute?s research indicates that heavy-equipment operators have an increased risk to dust exposure, especially when drilling or breaking rock, even when working from an enclosed cab. However, there are methods to reduce an operator?s exposure further, according to recent NIOSH research, which is detailed in its report, Improving Air Quality in Enclosed Caps with Uni-Directional Filtration/ Pressurization System. NIOSH indicates that when surface mining equipment is new, the operator?s dust exposure is normally at accept-able levels. As the equipment ages and components such as gaskets and seals deteriorate, the level of protection can degrade to a point where it is no longer acceptable. However, the institute indicates that at least two critical factors necessary for an effective system.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 234 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 21 States and 1 foreign country. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1975 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and n special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Seventeen previous publications have presented the results of 10,831 gas analyses prior to 1975. The first 3, Bulletins 486,4 576,5 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 14

Analytical methods are presented in this paper for determining soluble titanium, total titanium, indicated titanium, and average effective valence in titanium chloride - sodium chloride mixtures. In addition, data are given showing the effects of coarse and fine grinding on the degree of oxidation and average effective valence of such samples. INTRODUCTION The Electrometallurgical Experiment Station at Boulder City, Nev., as part of the Bureau of Mines program to obtain more efficient utilization of our natural resources, has been developing and improving titanium extractive metallurgical methods and techniques since 1945. "The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. This report is a compilation of results of preliminary concentration tests of seven manganese-ore samples. Six of the seven samples were submitted through the Mining Division, and 1 from Mexico was submitted by H. A. Doerner, formerly chief metallurgist, Region III. These investigations were made to assist development of mineral resources and particularly to aid economical exploitation of marginal or complex ores, from which strategic or critical minerals may be recovered.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 8,445 acres of the 20,650-acre Tunnison Mountain Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate its identified mi nerd 1 resources. The study area is located in Lassen County, CA, about 8 miles northeast from Susanville. No mineral resources were identified in the study area based on literature, field observations, and sample results. No mines were operating in or near the study area in 1985, and no mines, prospects, or claims have been located in or within 1 mi le of the study area. The study area is underlain by Pliocene and Pleistocene volcanic units composed of basalt, andesite, rhyolite, and some pyroclastics. No metallic and only nonmetallic commodities are present in the study area. These included stone and sand and gravel. Although substantial volumes of basalt and andesite (stone) occur within the study area, no identified resources of these commodities were delineated. Sand and gravel is not economic because of small occurrence size and lack of local markets.

"A three-year project focusing on the depth profiling of respirable coal mine dust particles using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis resulted in the development of statistically classified particle-behavior models. The models depict the changing silicon fraction for particles at 5-, 7-, 9-, and 11-keV accelerating voltages, thereby giving a clear indication of the nature of various types of mineral particles. This paper focuses on the results for respirable quartz particles sampled from five underground coal mines across the US. Through statistical analysis of results the relationship between the fraction of surface available quartz in respirable dust samples and coal rank is established for three Pennsylvania coal seams. IntroductionThis is the last in a series of papers detailing the results of SEM/EDX-based analyses of respirable coal mine dust particles collected from field sampling. Previous papers have detailed preliminary results and the statistical validity of the methodology (Grayson, Andre, and Simonyi, 1990; Grayson, 1991). This paper presents the final results of the analysis of respirable dusts from five coal seams with a range of coal rank:• Lykens Valley seam (anthracite), eastern Pennsylvania• Brookville (A) seam (mid-vol bituminous), central Pennsylvania• Pittsburgh seam (high-vol B bituminous), western Pennsylvania• No. 6 seam (high-vol C bituminous), Illinois• Wadge seam (sub-bituminous A), ColoradoSEM/EDX-based techniques were applied to try to clarify the role of quartz as an etiologic agent in coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). It was hypothesized that previous studies were hampered by the restrictions of bulk analysis techniques and that particle-level analyses were needed to answer a number of questions concerning the role of quartz in CWP and its progression.Since 1985, a large number of the respirable dust samples submitted to MSHA are analyzed for free silica (Tomb, Parobeck, and Gero, 1986). Our reasearch shows that conventional bulk analysis techniques may not give a true indication of the biologically available, or active, quartz in mine dusts. Analytical evidence indicates that respirable dust samples may contain many quartz particles that are occluded, or coated, resulting in a bulk analysis for ""free silica"" that may not be indicative of the biologically available quartz surface."

Chrysotile asbestos occurs in many counties in California, and a small production had been reported at times, but development of deposits had been disappointing. A reconnaissance survey by the Bureau of Mines indicated that several deposits in the serpentine belt in Shasta, Trinity, and Siskiyou Counties might contain enough asbestos of filler grade to supply the growing demand on the west coast. Accordingly from 1956 to 1958 parts of the Mount Eddy and Shasta View deposits were investigated by trenching and diamond drilling to determine their potential. The work comprised construction of roads, bulldozer trenching, excavation of areas for diamond drilling, sampling, and upping. The trenches were excavated to expose the surface extent of some of the asbestos-bearing areas, To determine the downward continuation of asbestos-bearing sections and to secure samples for test purposes, six diamond drill holes, totaling 1,738 linear feet, were drilled in two selected areas. The trenching and core-drilling indicated that the asbestos-bearing material occurs as ribs and lenses of varying thicknesses in a broad belt of serpentine, about 600 feet wide and several miles long,

Laboratory batch flotation tests were conducted on copper converter slags to evaluate the relative merits of recovering copper from slow-cooled versus water-quenched slags. Three slags containing 1.6, 5.0, and 6.6 percent copper were used. More than 90 percent of the copper was recovered in a rougher concentrate leaving a 0.2- to 0.3-percent copper tailings when treating slow-cooled slag. Lower recoveries and higher copper tailings ranging from 0,5 to 0.6 percent copper were obtained from quenched slag. Grindability studies were made on the respective heat-treated slags. Quenched slags proved more difficult to grind than slow-cooled slags. Cost studies showed that (1) the cost of slow cooling and crushing off-sets any advantages of higher copper recoveries from slow-cooled slag, and (2) water-quenched slag, which requires no crushing preparatory to grinding, could be treated more economically. Costs based on processing 1,000 tons of slag per day would be $1.85 per ton for quenched slag versus $2.37 per ton for slow-cooled slag.

Physical property tests were conducted on drill core from three exploratory holes on the Naval Oil Shale Reserve near Anvil Points, Colo. Data and regression analysis curves are presented. Data obtained above the Mahogany zone were used to estimate the potential zone of surface effects from under-ground mining. Single specimen testing was primarily used to obtain Mohr's envelope and subsequent rock properties. The technique is shown to provide satisfactory results for this rock type with a significant reduction of core preparation and testing time.

The Blackbird district, Lemhi County, Idaho, has long been recognized as a potential source of cobalt and copper. However, the comparatively low grade and small size of the known ore bodies, the small demand for cobalt, and. the lack of adequate roads throughout the region precluded extensive exploration of the early discoveries in the area. Recent advances in alloy metallurgy, accentuated by wartime activities, greatly increased the demand for sources of domestic cobalt. Significant improvements in surface conditions or mechanical properties of steels have been attributed by several investigators to ladle additions of small quantities of rare-earth metals or their oxides. To investigate systematically these effects in wrought and in cast plain carbon and alloy mechanical steels containing approximately 0.35 percent carbon, heats of four representative compositions were melted by the Bureau of Mines in a 4-ton open-hearth furnace. Each heat was cast into three sets of ingots to exemplify respectively, treatments with (1) rare-earth metals, (2) rare-earth metal oxides, and (3) an untreated set as a control. The development of melting, casting and rolling practices is described and discussed. Lance injection of oxygen shortly after melt raised the temperature of the metal immediately as much as 500° F., principally because mechanical agitation exposed the high-carbon metal to the flame and furnace root. An exceptional degree of superheat in the metal at the termination of the refining period was attributed to oxygen injection during the refining period. Bath temperatures higher than industrial practice were permitted by the all-basic furnace lining. Rates of carbon elimination as high as 0.036 percent carbon per minute were achieved by oxygen injections.

Respirable dust exposure has long been known to be a serious health threat to workers in many industries. In coal mining, overexposure to respirable coal mine dust can lead to coal workers? pneumoconiosis (CWP). CWP is a lung disease that can be disabling and fatal in its most severe form. In addition, miners can be exposed to high levels of respirable silica dust, which can cause silicosis, another disabling and/or fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for CWP or silicosis. The goal, therefore, is to limit worker exposure to respirable dust to prevent development of these diseases. The passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 established respirable dust exposure limits, dust sampling requirements for inspectors and mine operators, a voluntary x-ray surveillance program to identify CWP in underground coal miners, and a benefits program to provide compensation to affected workers and their families. The tremen­dous human and financial costs resulting from CWP and silicosis in the U.S. underground coal mine workforce are shown by the following statistics: ? During 1970?2004, CWP was a direct or contributing cause of 69,377 deaths of U.S. underground coal mine workers. ? During 1980?2005, over $39 billion in CWP benefits were paid to underground coal miners and their families. ? Recent x-ray surveillance data for 2000?2006 show an increase in CWP cases. Nearly 8% of examined underground coal miners with 25 or more years of experience were diagnosed with CWP. ? ?Continuous miner operator? is the most frequently listed occupation on death certificates that record silicosis as the cause of death.

Deposits of iron ore in Judith Basin County, Mont., generally referred to as the Running Wolf deposits, were examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in August 1942. During the Summer of 1943 the Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey of, the Running Wolf Iron district and also made a detailed study and a topographic and geological map of the eastern end of the district. Two deposits of iron ore at the eastern end of the district were trenched and drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the fall and winter of 1943-44, This report presents the factual data obtained from the trenching and drilling' operations. The iron deposits of thy Running Wolf district are accessible from Stanford, Mont., by 14 to 16 miles of county highway and 2 to 3 miles of rough mountain road or trails (see fig. 1). No shipments of ore have been made from of these deposits. The ore is a replacement of Madison limestone at the contact with syenite porphyry. The contact can be traced for about 6 miles in a general northwest direction. 'At least five. deposits occur along this contact.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the third. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township-map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township.

A computer program is presented to calculate the shape factors and volumes of cells from a potentiometric model, using coordinates of the inter-sections of the stream lines and equal potentials and a few additional coordinates. Shape factors are used in flow computations when the geometry is complicated. The program also includes computer instructions to divide the channels into cells of equal volume and to obtain the shape factor for each of these equal volume cells. An illustrated example using the potentiometric model for the waterflood of a seven-spot well-spacing pattern is presented. The information contained in the report is of value not only to those allied to the subject but also to others, because many of the techniques can be conveniently used in formulating other computer programs.
