Ground support for metal, nonmetal, and coal mines was examined through fill placement with a pneumatic stower to increase extraction, reduce ground pressures, and improve general mine safety. Several pneumatically stowed stope-fill products were tested to determine the effects of specific gravity, gradation, moisture, and impact velocity on the in-place density of the stowed fill. Hydraulic sand filling has now served the mining industry for several decades but because of the low density does not always provide ample support to the hanging wall; therefore, the sill and crown pillars sometimes build up excessive stresses that are detrimental to mining. Cementation of a dense fill adjacent to a pillar to allow 100-pct extraction of the pillar, or a fill that can be placed without the use of water and where water is a detriment to rubber-tired mining equipment, was found to be a possible use of pneumatic fill. Placing of coal mine washery products into abandoned underground workings is another possibility in order to completely eliminate surface impoundments.

Nuclear detonation data were accumulated, studied, and evaluated by the Bureau of Mines to visualize how nuclear explosives might be used in a shale?-oil industry, The evaluation shows that the Green River Formation at the semi-isolated locale of Piceance Creek Basin, in northwestern Colorado; is thick and widespread enough to warrant consideration of nuclear mining in lieu of conventional methods, Because cost data for nuclear explosions are limited; cost comparisons are made largely by assumptions. Also described are the history of the shale-oil industry, the geology and size of oil-shale resources; and conventional mining methods and processing technology.

Olefin and paraffin mixtures (C10-C16 and C10-C22) were separated from low-temperature lignite tar by urea adduction and sulfated to yield secondary alkyl sulfate detergents. The C10 ?C16 secondary alkyl sulfate showed a 99.3 percent biodegradability, and the C10-C22 fraction showed a 96.8 percent biodegradability, exceeding the required standard of 80 percent for the biodegradability of anionic detergents in washing and cleaning compounds. Chlorination of paraffins yielded a detergent of 93.2 to 93.4 percent biodegradability.

"An overview of various physical and interfacial characterization methods for use in mineral processing is presented in this paper. The availability of a large number of characterization techniques and commercial instruments requires that the reliability and limitation of each be carefully examined. The choice of a method may depend upon the manner in which the information is to be used, for example in development of new processes, plant and process design, plant control, problem solving, etc. IntroductionThe behavior of particulate systems, in mineral processing and other applications, is primarily affected by the physical characteristics (size, shape, surface area, pore structure) of the particles and the nature of the different solid-fluid interfaces present. Mineral processing operations in general are either designed to modify and/or control physical and interfacial properties (grinding, classification, agglomeration, etc.) or are strongly influenced by them (flotation, flocculation, solid/liquid separation, etc.). Characterization of physical and interfacial properties should be an integral part of the development of new processes, plant and process design, and routine plant operation.Our purpose in preparing this article has been to present an overview of the current status of characterization, to point out areas of weakness, and to discuss the reliability and limitations of the various techniques, procedures, and instrumentation available. For more detailed discussion of methods, etc., the reader is referred to standard references.Sampling particulate solids.Sampling is a critical factor in any procedure for characterizing particulate materials — the reliability of characterization data is ultimately limited by the extent to which the sample used was truly represen¬tative of the population from which it was taken.Sampling from particulate solids involves two basic problems: (1) the selection of a random', unbiased sample and (2) choice of the appropriate sample size.The problem of sample selection involves the design of a sample collection procedure that ensures that every kind of particle in the population has the proper chance of being included in the sample without bias. Specific procedures such as the well-known cone-and-quarter technique have been developed and are discussed at length in the literature on particle characterization (Allen, 1981: Herdan, 1960: Gy, 1982)."

"Two in vitro systems are being developed to model initial stages in the interaction of respired dusts with the acinar region of the lung. Incubation of quartz and kaolin with dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, suppresses the prompt C)1otoxicity of both dusts as measured by in vitro enzyme release from pulmonary macrophages or assay by erythrocyte hemolysis. Additional data is presented to quantitate the detoxification of quartz and kaolin by dipalmitoyl lecithin. Subsequent incubation of lecithin treated dusts with phospholipase enzymes results in partial to complete restoration of the assayed cytotoxic potentials, dependent on the lipase activity applied, the incubation time, and the mineral. Restored cytotoxic potential is due to removal of the prophylactic lecithin surface coating and/or due to residual lysolecithin which is produced by the partial enzymatic digestion of lecithin. Data is presented on the contribution of each mechanism to the restored toxicity. Again, this is dependent on the mineral used, the lipase activity applied, and digestion time. Additionally, a system is under development to challenge pulmonary macrophages in culture with native and surfactant treated dusts. A preliminary test of the dipalmitoyl lecithin - quartz rabbit pulmonary macrophage system is presented to illustrate the method.IntroductionRespirable quartz dust exposure is known to cause librotic lung disease; respirable clay dust exposure is less likely to do so as indicated by epidemiologic data on occupational exposures and by animal model studiesP·7) The hypothesis that damage to pulmonary macrophages in the acinar region of the lung by respired dusts is an early event in the disease process requires consideration because kaolin clay and quartz dusts are comparably cytotoxic to pulmonary macrophages in vitro.(3•9)"

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.070 A?h per 150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 ms. Graphite, lead, and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70° C gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10 to 30 pct, and a period of 100 to 1,000 ms gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 to 0.1µg/mL, Au concentrations decreased from 54 to 0.2 µg/mL, and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

The Bureau of Mines, in an effort to improve resource conservation, mine planning and development, is currently investigating the loading behavior of pillars in multiple-seam developments. The simultaneous mining of two or more coalbeds may cause instability between room-and-pillar operations resulting in an interaction known as pillar load transfer. Although pillars may be adequately designed for single-seam mining, the development of a second seam may complicate loading conditions in both operations. If pillars are not adequately designed to contend with this load transfer, failure of the mine structure may result. To improve multiple-seam development and pillar design, the Bureau studied the loading characteristics of pillars in three separate multiple-seam operations. In all three cases, instrumented pillars recorded increasing pressure after development of the second seam. Increases in the average pillar pressure ranged from 7 to 110 pct over predicted overburden loads. An analysis of pillar loading before and after second-seam mining indicates that the ratio of overburden to innerburden thickness is a critical factor influencing load transfer. Based on this relationship, safety factors for case study pillars are calculated and alternative design considerations are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines produced building brick of good quality in an investigation designed to explore the possible utilization of high-glass fractions of municipal incinerator residues in the manufacture of building products. Common clays, lime, and sodium silicate were used as binders for the nonplastic residues Test bricks were formed by dry-pressing, soft-mud molding, and stiff-mud extrusion. A run of standard-size face brick dry-pressed and fired in the West Virginia University Coal Research Bureau pilot plant demonstrated that SW-grade glass-clay face brick can be produced on a commercial scale without difficulty. A cost evaluation made for production of the brick showed an estimated cost of $42.13 per thousand bricks for a shuttle kiln plant and $28.70 per thousand for a tunnel kiln plant.

"INTRODUCTION This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained from limited diamond drilling at the lead-zinc deposits cf the Belle Eldridge Gold Mines, Inc., in Lawrence County, S. Dak. during the summer and fall of 1943. The work was undertaken in an effort to increase reserves and step-up production of zinc and lead so vitally important to the war program.The geology, topography and existing mine workings were mapped and studied. Subsequently, six vertical core-drill holes were put down from surface sites.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our natural resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. To facilitate increase in the rate of coal production the Bureau of Mines conducted a study several years ago, on the basis of which the allowable charge limit for permissible explosives in single-hole blasting was raised from 1.5 to 3.0 pounds. Further demands for accelerated production led to consideration of multiple blasting in coal, a practice that is deemed hazardous and is not permitted by most States in this country. In multiple blasting, 10 to 20 pounds of explosive or more may be detonated in a coal face within a fraction of a second, which might result in blown-out or blown-through shots with possible ignition of gas or coal dust. As experimental evidence was lacking, in January 1949 an investigation was undertaken in the Experimental coal mine at Bruceton, Pa., principally to study and compare with single blasting the condi-tions under which simultaneous multiple blasting and particularly multiple short-delay blasting may be practiced without danger of igniting gas or coal dust in mines. The first report on this subject was presented at the last international conference of mine safety research. Since that time numerous additional experiments have been made; because of other pressing problems the work has been brought temporarily at least to a conclusion. This paper is the second report on the problem. It does not contain a detailed description of all test conditions and test arrangements, many of which were described 2 years ago in part 1 (now available as Report of Investigations 4868), but the conclusions are based on the entire study. A more complete review, which will incorporate data from the entire investigation, is being prepared as a Bureau of Mines bulletin. Up to the present time, short-delay blasting of coal in commercial mines has been introduced only experimentally in Washington and in a few mines elsewhere. If the system is adopted more generally, new problems may arise, and the study may have to be reopened.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to furnish information on mining practices applied to flat-bedded fluorspar deposits in southern Illinois. It presents new and improved operating procedures and specialized techniques applicable to deposits of this type. All of the operating mines of the Ozark-Mahoning Co. in this area have been opened by vertical shafts which connect with levels consisting of haul-age ways, stopes, and loading stations. The stoping practice used locally called room and pillar, is open stoping with pillars left at different distances and diameters. To facilitate haulage and drainage, the mines are worked from openings turned off the main haulage drift on a grade to conform with the dip of the ore beds. The ore is predominantly fluorspar with smaller amounts of galena and sphalerite that contain traces of cadmium and germanium. The principal gangue minerals are limestone, calcite, shale, barite, and sandstone. The rock hardness ranges from relatively soft shale to hard, abrasive sandstone.

This report describes an in situ combustion project and three waterflood projects in Allen, Anderson, and Wilson Counties, Kansas, that will be visited during the 1964 annual tour of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects are the movement of heavy crude oil through the reservoir and into the wellbore with energy furnished by burning s portion of the crude oil therein. Another feature is the simultaneous injection of C02 and water, through separate tubing into input wells during early development, to increase injectivity at moderate pressures, Discussion of individual projects includes information on their early history, source and treatment of injection fluids, oil production-decline curves, and the results of water injection on oil production.

Electrowon molybdenum powders and a commercial hydrogen-reduced powder, all with different minor impurities, were investigated by the Bureau of Mines with respect to inherent properties, to fabrication techniques, and to proper-ties of the fabricated sheet. Compared with the commercial hydrogen-reduced powder, the electrowon powders had a larger particle size, a greater flow rate, a higher apparent density, and a lower oxygen content. Sheet materials prepared from the two types of powders showed similar mechanical properties, under the same conditions of heat treatments, except for low-temperature ductility. Yield strengths varied with carbon content, heat treatment, and test temperature.

Advances in mining technology have enabled deeper seams of coal to be mined from the surface. Highwall mining is frequently used to mine areas at the perimeters of a surface mine when removal of the overburden becomes uneconomical or threatens environmentally sensitive surface features. At the same time, advances in materials and technology have enabled highwall mining of coal that create blind headings over 300 meters in length. Deeper surface mining and deeper highwall penetration depths have lead to more frequent encounters with methane gas. While this coal is remotely mined from the surface, underground ignitions of methane have propagated to the surface and injured miners. Methods described in this paper show how this hazard can be correctly monitored and controlled for auger type highwall mining machines. Research indicates that small quantities of gas liberated during mining migrate to the face, creating higher gas concentrations than would otherwise be expected. Using the same principles that cause the gas to migrate to the face, researchers have shown that inert gas introduced at the collar of the hole can inert the entire hole, thus ensuring safe conditions for mining.

This Bureau of Mines report describes experimental and theoretical studies of diffusion flames in free convection. The cross-coupling between buoyancy-induced flows and the combustion process is explored as it relates to the size, structure, and radiative balance of flames. New data are presented for the size-dependent radiance oscillations of diffusion flames and for the angular distribution of the total radiant intensity from a small methanol pool flame. Both amplitude and frequency of the measured oscillations are compared with theoretical predictions that are based on a new view of the structure of diffusion flames. This new view, which is at variance with the traditional one, assumes uniform reaction in the diffusive mixing zone, and recognizes the significance of the role played by convective buoyancy and its duality in both aiding and impeding flame propagation. Buoyancy quenches propagation at low burning velocities, introducing a real discontinuity in the combustion rate. A "flammable volume" is thus defined as that bound between lean- and rich-limit contours. However, in the flow disturbances generated by combustion waves that consume that volume, buoyancy aids propagation by promoting the convective mixing of a new flammable volume. The measured radiance oscillations are manifestations of these propagation and remixing cycles.

(E) Historical injury experience: Table 31: Injury and employment data on the quarrying industry for 1911 through 1957. Statistical data on injuries and related employment in the quarrying industries have been collected annually from the operating companies since 1911. Reporting to the Bureau of Mines is voluntary; there is no Federal law compelling operators of quarries and related plants to supply such data. Data presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry. They are however, believed to be representative of the hazards common to all quarry and related workers. This report analyzes the petroleum-production potential of the basal Greenbrier dolomite zone, Sycamore-Millstone field, Sherman District, Calhoun County, W. Va., through the application of certain secondary-recovery methods. The well logs obtained and the core recovered from a well in this formation permitted an evaluation of the productive capability of the reservoir, Approximately 120,000 stb of oil may be produced from a 20-acre five-spot unit at breakthrough if the property is waterflooded. At an assumed limiting producing gas-oil ratio of 20)000 sef/stb, approximately 69,000 stb of oil should be recovered by low-pressure gas drive.

A study of the consumption of reagents used in flotation gives useful data as to the market which employment of the flotation process creates for the manufacturers of the necessary chemicals and oils, and furnishes a useful clue to the trends in flotation practice influencing the choice of reagents used and the' extent to which new reagents are displacing less suitable older reagents. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to cover both of these phases of the consumption of reagents in flotation. Unfortunately, however, the data collected in tie various districts have not been equally informative; some operators have reported very completely both the consumption of reagents and the metallurgical results obtained therewith, while others were apparently unable to supply these figures in sufficient detail to meet the requirements of this investigation. RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION Table 1 gives the tonnage of ore treated by flotation, as reported. This table shows that flotation has been most largely used in the concentration of copper ores, next in complex lead-zinc ores, followed by lead ores, zinc ores, miscellaneous ores, and copper-iron ores.
