This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations-in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Deparment of the Interior. It presents analytical data for 4,397 samples, representing the products of 130 companies. The samples were collected during December 1952 and January and February 1953. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past ten years is given on page 5.

The purpose of screening is to separate a crushed or natural product into one or more products in which size of grain is constant, or within certain size limits. The ore dresser finds need for this operation in the laboratory, in the study of ore-dressing processes, and for various purposes in the plants. In the plant, for example, screens are employed in closed circuit with crushing devices such as rolls, and sometimes are used in closed circuit with ball mills. Screens are generally used to prepare jig feed where a sized feed is wanted. For any given sieve opening there is in any feed a certain percentage of grains that will pass through the sieve meshes only with difficulty and under favorable conditions. For example, cylindrical grains of length greater than the maximum dimension of the sieve mesh and of diameter less than the sieve opening pass the sieve only when the long axis of the grain is normal or nearly normal to the sieve. Whether such grains should actually be in the through's or the oversize of a screening operation--considered from the point of view of the subsequent treatment of the grains--can not be said. The grains that pass the sieve opening in a screening process only under-favorable conditions have been named "difficult" grains by R. K. Warner.4 In many ore-dressing flow-sheets it probably matters little whether these difficult grains show up in the screen through's or oversize. The main objection to them is that they are sieve-blinding.

The U.S, Bureau of Mines is conducting a four-year (1987-1990) study to assess the mineral resources and mineral development potential of the Valdez Creek Mining District in southcentral Alaska. This study is part of the Bureau's ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. This report summarizes the Bureau's site specific evaluations of two areas (Tyone and Peters Creek) of the district that were investigated to determine the bedrock sources of gold and PCM in the alluvial gravel of both areas. In the Tyone Creek area, grains of gold (up to 0.0212 oz/yd3) and platinum group minerals (PCM) were recovered from alluvium and weathered conglomerate of the Jurassic Naknek Formation and Tertiary age using placer sampling techniques, Platinum and palladium were detected in the heavy mineral concentrates recovered from placer sampling the alluvium, and Naknek Formation and Tertiary conglomerates. In the Peters Creek area, grains of gold (up to 0.014 oz/yd3) were recovered from the alluvium and Tertiary Sterling Formation conglomerate. The Bureau's evaluations indicated that drainage basins containing conglomerate are the most favorable targets for placer gold and PGM exploration; and Tertiary conglomerate represents a high volume, low grade gold resource.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,421 samples, representing the products of 131 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August, 1953. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

In 1984, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.5, Bureau of Mines began a study of the 94,370-acre Arc Dome study area (4-667) in order to appraise its mineral resources, The Bureau of Mines mapped and sampled mines, prospects, and mineralized sites in and near the area, The study area is located in the Toiyabe National Forest, about 54 mi north of Tonopah, Nye County, NV, It is estimated that over 500 claims have been staked in the study area since the mid-1800?s. In January 1986, there were 108 active mining claims completely inside and 59 on the boundary. Another 283 active claims were outside the study area but within 1 mi of the boundary, In addition to the large number of claims staked, exploration activity is also reflected by the almost 700 inactive workings that were found during field investigation.

The basic objective of this project was to determine the cost-effectiveness of dust control used on unpaved mine haul roads. Field testing was conducted at three surface coal mines (two in Wyoming, one in southern Illinois) for a total of 20 weeks. The highest control efficiency measured for a chemical dust suppressant, 82 percent, was for calcium chloride two weeks after application. Generally, however, the control efficiencies hovered in the 40 to 60 per-cent range over the first two weeks since application, and then decreased with time. After the fifth week, the limited number of data points suggest a control efficiency of less than 20 percent. Composite watering data were fairly uniform. Watering once per hour resulted in a TSP control efficiency of approximately 40 percent. Doubling that application rate increased the control effectiveness by about 15 percent to 55 percent. Chemical dust suppressants (primarily salts and lignons) can be shown to be more cost-effective than watering under some conditions. "INTRODUCTION During July and August 1943, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of the Trego lead-zinc mine, near the town of Platteville in Grart County, Wis. as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin. The work was done when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the nation's war program.The Bureau of Mines completed eight churn-drill holes and sampled mineralized faces in the mine workings to determine if further exploitation was justified in an area between the mine and a zone previously drilled to the east.Following the investigation described herein, intermittent operations were resumed. Except where otherwise stated, this report describes conditions only to the time of completion of the Bureau of Mines investigations.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Conservation in the utilization of any product is always subject to improvement if the composition and properties of the product are known. Petroleum is no exception, and knowledge of the characteristics of crude oils, even when given on the broad basis of routine type analyses has proved useful to chemists, engineers, and geologists in improving pro- duction and utilization of petroleum. For a quarter of a century the Bureau of Mines has sought to provide such information regarding crude oils and has analyzed many samples of petroleum by its standardized rou- tine method. Most of these analyses have been published, sometimes in special compilations, other times in connection with reports of research on petroleum. This report is a finding index for all analyses published up to January 1, 1948. The routine method used for all these analyses is basically the same as that described by Dean, et al.. Briefly, the procedure consists of testing by standard methods, small samples of a crude oil for gravity, sulfur, color, and viscosity, and of distilling a sample of the crude oil by a standardized procedure and determining certain properties in the sep- arated fractions and residuum. Careful records are made during the proce- dure, and the distillation data obtained are used to calculate the approx- imate amounts of products present in the sample such as percents of gas- oline, kerosine, gas oil, and lubricants. The data obtained are recorded on a standard analytical report form. An analysis of a sample of typical midcontinent crude oil is shown in table 1. Compilation of these analyses, sometimes in tabular form and usually for specific geographic areas, are published from time to time. Analyses are often shown in connection with other studies, such as engineering field reports. A summary of the characteristics of motor gasoline for the winter 1951-52 is presented in table I, and for comparison, a similar summary for the winter 1950-51 is shown in table 2. Trends of some of the more important characteristics over a period of years are shown in figures 1 and 2. The results of this survey show that octane numbers have risen slightly since the summer of 1951 but are below the record levels of the winter of 1950-51. The fractions of a unit change since the summer preceding have resulted in the research and motor-method octane values being virtually the same as the figures for the survey of summer 1950. In volatility characteristics the winter gasolines have changed very little. Average Reid vapor pressures are 10.5 pounds for both grades of fuel compared to 10.4 and 10.5 pounds for premium and regular-price gasolines, respectively, of the winter of 1950-51.

This report contains information on the relation between and precision or reproducibility of counts (light-and dark-field) of the dust in liquid from simultaneous impinger, midget-impinger, electric-precipitator, and filter-paper samples. The impinger was the main sampler used from about 1922 to 1939 by industrial hygienists in the United States for collecting samples of unhygienic dust from the atmospheric environment of workers. The midget-impinger, a small modification of the preceding impinger described in 1937, has been the sampler used most since about 1939. Electric precipitators5/6/ have been used to a limited extent, mainly by the Bureau of Mines in the laboratory, for obtaining results comparable to impinger results. A filter-paper sampler for obtaining results comparable to impinger results has been described by Brown. All these samplers have a high collecting efficiency for particles larger than 1 micron in diameter revealed by the usual light-field counting procedure. However, their collecting efficiencies are quite variable for the smaller particles revealed by the dark-field counting procedure used in this study. Published information on the relation between the results of these samplers is limited and scattered. Summaries of some of this information are given in this report along with some previously unpublished information.

Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 2,368 samples, 319 items, and 113 brands; premium-price, 2,172 samples, 289 items, and 106 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. "INTRODUCTION The first important discovery of petroleum in New Mexico was near Dayton, Eddy County, where the Brown well was drilled in 1909, and small quantities of oil were produced. In 1911 and 1912 wells were drilled in McKinley County, but commercial production did not begin until the discovery of the Hogback field, San Juan County, in 1922. The discovery well in the Artesia field, Eddy County, drilled in 1923, gave impetus to active drilling in many areas. Since 1924 New Mexico has produced petroleum in commercial quantities and since 1930 the State has joined the ranks of the big produc¬ing States, being sixth or seventh in total production in recent years.Production by years. 1924 to 1940, inclusive, taken from annual figures in Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, are given in table 1. The total production shown is 274,331,000 barrels. Andreas 3/ has published production figures for the year 1940 and a resume of all production to the end of 1940. Data from his report are presented in table 2 for each field sampled. The cumulative production, as given by Andreas, is 270,618,575 barrels."

This paper, describing the milling operations of the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Balmat, N. Y., is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on practice at various mills in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The company also operates a mine end mill at Edwards, 12 miles northeast of Balmat. Mining practice in the district, as exemplified at the Edwards mine, is described in another information circular of the Bureau of Mines.3 The writer gratefully acknowledges the generous cooperation of the company officials which made this investigation possible, and wishes to thank R. J. Mechin, manager, P. W. Wolf, mill superintendent, and F. G. Kuehl, assistant mill superintendent, for their helpful assistance. Especial thanks are due J. S. The samples tested were taken from commercial shipments and have been selected to represent the principal coal producing areas of the country . Due to combining the analytical results from two separate surveys , values for the four elements are not available for all samples .

"It is well known by all who are familiar with the oil industry in America that the oil pipe line is as fundamentally a part of this industry as the railroad is of most other American industries. The oil pipe line was first introduced about 56 years ago, and since that time has so demonstrated its superiority as a means of carrying crude oil froze the well to the refinery, that this method of transportation has largely superseded all others. This has made possible the building of refineries in or near the large consuming centers, rather than at the wells, which are usually remote from the centers of population.The pipes for conveying the oil are laid on the surface of the ground, or at a depth varying from 18 inches to 3 feet beneath the surface, and the main lines are generally eight inches in diameter. The oil is forced through the pipes by means of pumps operated either by steam or by internal combustion engines. The pump stations are located from 1 1/2 to 90 miles apart, varying with the condition of the country through which the pipe lines extend, and the viscosity of the oil to be handled.Some of the larger pipe-line systems and hundreds of miles in length. It is estimated by the U. S. Geological Survey that the total mileage of oil trunk lines in the United States today is approximately 34,000, and that the gathering systems, which are a fundamental part of the trunk systems, aggregate about 11,500 miles in length, making a total of 45,500 miles.Using those figures as a basis, some general conclusions as to the investment represented will be made. At the time most of the lines were constructed, the average cost per mile based on eight-inch pipe was about $6,500. The cost of the average pump station at that time varied from $130,000 to $250,000. The cost at the present time, on account of the increase in price of labor and materials, would be much in excess of these figures. The fixed investment in pipe lines is, therefore, very extensive. It corresponds closely with the actual cost of the property, and is estimated to be approximately $500,000,000."

This report presents a structural analysis of the economies of Spokane County, Washington and 21 surrounding counties. An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. The Micro IMPLAN modeling system with the 1990 county database was used to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading industries, with respect to employee compensation, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown (or each county and the region. The total industry output from the Spokane Economic Trade Area (S ETA) region is valued at $22.3 billion. The SETA region provides $7.1 billion in employee compensation to a work force of 374,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total output, employee compensation, and employment. Both Spokane County and the region as a whole produce about 80 percent of total industry output for final demand with the remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. About $7.4 billion of the $22.3 billion SETA output is exported from the region. Spokane County exports about $4.7 billion, or 41 percent of the $11.5 billion Spokane County output. Exports account for more than 50 percent of the total output in 12 of the 22 counties within the region. Based on the output of the top 25 industries in each county and the SETA region about 9 percent of the industry output from Spokane County and 18 percent of the regional industry output come from natural resource based industries. For counties other than Spokane County, total industry' output from natural resource based industries represents from 12 percent to 81 percent of county output from the top 25 industries. Natural resource industries account for more than 50 percent of total county output in 8 counties within the region
