The Bureau of Mines conducted one of the most extensive studies on surface mine illumination to date, to assess the illumination needs of mobile surface mining machinery with respect to the visual tasks required of machinery operators. Field Investigations were performed at 22 surface mining operations, coal and metal-nonmetal, within several mining regions of the United States. Visibility and illumination were measured for 159 visual tasks performed by equipment operators on or near 57 surface mining machines, including draglines, shovels, blasthole drills, bulldozers, loaders, haul trucks, graders, scrapers, and several service-type vehicles.

The cause of many deaths and extensive property damage in coal mines resulting from explosions and mine fires has been directly attributable to electric cable failures (including splice failures). The Federal Bureau of Mines data show that out of 355 underground coal mine fires investigated from July 1952 to January 1960, 103 (29 percent) were directly related to trailing cables. These cable failures resulted in the death of 7 men and injuries to 37 others. These potential hazards have become greater, obviously, through the widespread adoption of mechanized mining methods with electric-driven machinery powered through trailing cables according to Young,4 68.1 percent of the total bituminous and lignite production of the United States was mined underground in 1959. About 85 percent of this production was attained by mechanized loading methods. A large majority of the mines using the hand- loading methods also used equipment with trailing cables such as cutting machines, drills, and gathering locomotives. The problem of minimizing the loss of life, resources, and equipment from cable failures should be of concern to the management of all coal mines. It would be misleading to imply that no consideration has been given to the problem and its associated hazards. Through research cable manufacturers have endeavored to develop trailing cables that will withstand the severe service imposed by underground mining conditions. Technical research groups have undertaken studies for determining improved procedure and materials for field splices. Coal companies have instituted cable maintenance programs with a view toward the reduction of cable failures and consequent improvement in safety and efficiency of operations. This paper discusses the application of digital human models (DHM) to examine computer generated forces necessary to move specific joysticks by using roof bolter virtual operators to predict the forces experienced on the operator’s upper extremities. Using DHM and simulations of static movements, investigators analyzed predictions of joint moment and joint force effects on virtual operator’s right wrist, elbow and shoulder and compared them to different body dimensions and work postures. This study exemplifies the ease of estimating upper extremity loads on equipment operators using virtual operators and computer models of equipment and work environment. As expected, comparing results of percentage of joint force and moment reduction using the electronic control and of the mechanical control showed that the electronic control had lower joint forces and joint moments over the mechanical control. The average predicted value of the joint moment on the wrist was 1.84 Nm, elbow 7.85 Nm and shoulder 14.55 Nm and of the joint force on the wrist was 5.06 N, elbow 4.56 N, and shoulder 3.67 N. Because the data illustrates low-level forces to move a joystick, inadvertent actuation of the control is addressed. Regardless of the findings, research is still needed on joysticks in real world situations such as an epidemiological assessment of equipment operators in the field before final recommendations and conclusions can be drawn.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring the latter part of 1943 a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahepac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by ""pinching"" or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance the original ore body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. The Mahopac mine was visited by W.T. Millar, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 5, 1943, accompanied by Dr. William Agar of the Federal Survey, and again on July 29, 1943, accompanied by Dr. A. F. Buddington and H.F. A recent survey of 23 vein-type metal mining operations in several western states discloses that some of the more serious deficiencies in ventilation technology are associated with inordinately high levels of mine resistance. This problem has progressively increased over many years of operation (without adequate remedial action) as mines have become extended in depth. Where two shafts form the downcast and upcast airways of a relatively deep mine, the whole of the mine air volume must pass through each shaft in turn. Since at least one of these shafts contains hoisting equipment, structural members are necessary to support the rigid guides and shaft walls. These offer high aerodynamic resistance. In some deep mines, a single shaft of this nature may represent upwards of one-half of the total mine resistance. The second shaft, depending upon its design, may represent an additional one-third of the mine resistance. Therefore, the various working levels throughout the mine contribute only the small remaining amount of the total mine resistance.

This report summarizes 10 selected Bureau of Mines research contract reports produced from 1970 to 1980 which consist largely of geologic studies of coal mine roof support problems. Significant highlights from the contract final reports are discussed and presented in practical terms. The selected reports focus on the Appalachian and Illinois coal mining regions. In the Appalachian coal region, two geologic structures, roof rolls and slickensides, predominate over all structures as features that directly contribute to roof falls. Studies of these and other structures are reviewed, and improved methods of utilizing drill core and core logs to prepare hazard maps are presented. Among the reports described are several on the weakening effects of moisture on shale roof, as determined from both laboratory and underground measurements, and an assessment of air tempering as a humidity-control method. Also summarized are findings concerning the time lapse between roof exposure and permanent support installation as a factor in the effectiveness of roof bolting.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated creep and other properties of extruded Zn-30 pct-AI alloys containing 0 to 0.7 pct Mg. The alloys were extruded both above and below the Zn-Al eutectoid temperature of 275° C. Creep behavior is defined for the alloys as extruded and after various heat treatments. Tensile properties, hardness, thermal expansivity, impact resistance, and microstructures are given. The alloys, either with or without magnesium, required substantially less pressure for extrusion near 275° C than at higher or lower temperatures. The alloys containing magnesium exhibited significantly greater hardness, tensile strength, and creep resistance, but much lower ductility than the 2n-30 pct Al alloy. The properties were very sensitive to the processing conditions.

This report deals with information regarding a new Medium Frequency (MF) Wireless Communication System for underground mines. This new telecommunication system works on low loss electromagnetic wave propagation modes which allow it to provide quality radio communications almost anywhere in a mine. Tests show the MF system can provide improved safety and managerial control, increased productivity, better organizational team-work and reduced maintenance cost; furthermore, MF's unique design allows for easy installation at a minimum cost. This paper covers the following: 1) MF design plan, 2) Overview of mine radio communications systems, 3) Preparations needed for designing an MF system, 4) MF equipment, 5) MF installation, 6) MF design considerations, 7) MF design specifica¬tions, and 8) Recommendations dealing with MF system. Experiments in four mines are illustrated to demonstrate the success and via¬bility of the MF system. The mines range from small (500 tons/day) to large (67,000 tons/day) capacity and represent several different mining methods. The MF Wireless Communication System represents an advancement in mining communication and the groundwork for other advanced mine systems.

DOMEST1C production of carbon black in 1963, remained at about the same level as in 1962. Carbon black produced by the furnace process increased 2 percent to 1,880 million pounds in 1963 and accounted for 91 percent of the total output. Channel black production continued to decline and was 14 percent less than a year ago. Shipments during 1963 totaled 2,098 million pounds, a 1 percent increase for the year. An increase of 88 million pounds in domestic sales was partially offset by a decrease of 72 million pounds in carbon black exports. Total value of carbon black production in 1963 was $148 million. The average value per pound was 7.18 cents or 0.12 cent per pound more than in 1962.

This Bureau of Mines study was made to investigate a possible method for selectively removing the Si02 component of silicate minerals and ores. Of specific interest were aluminum ores and zircon. Methods are described for removing Si02 from these ores as volatile silicon sulfides by treating the ore with sulfur and carbon; with sulfur, carbon, and a reducing gas; or with sulfur compounds and carbon. Comparative results are also given for the desilication of some of the ores with carbon alone to form volatile silicon monoxide. The silica component can be removed partially from bauxites at temperatures above the sublimation temperature of SiS (940° C) by treatment with carbon, sulfur, and methane; however, it is more difficult to remove the silicon from kyanite, manganese silicate, red muds from aluminum processing, kaolinite, lateritic nickel ores, and zircon. Complete desilication requires temperatures ranging from 1,100° C for bauxite to 1,450° C for zircon. Although the high temperatures required and the undesirable metal sulfides produced eliminate practical application of this method using present technology, the Bureau is reporting this data so that they will be available to future investigators.

The system was originally designed for high-back room-and-pillar mines where stench systems are unusable due to the low velocity of mine air flow. However, the system has an application to all underground mines.

The chapter will also help if your dust control problem doesn’t fit any of the circumstances described in later chapters. ] This chapter describes the three major control methods used to reduce airborne dust in tunnels and underground mines: ventilation, water, and dust collectors. It also describes methods to reduce the generation of dust, so less has to be removed from the mine air. The ventilation methods provide the best use of air in the vicinity of workers and in the vicinity of dust sources. In this sense, the methods described are local ventilation methods. Most of the emphasis is on so-called displacement ventilation because it is the most effective dust control technique available. The section on water sprays outlines the dual role of sprays—wetting and airborne capture—and describes why wetting is more important. It also corrects some of the misconceptions about spray effectiveness and describes circumstances where sprays can actually increase the dust exposure of workers. The section on dust collectors outlines the circumstances under which dust collectors can be expected to function effectively. It also describes some common design and maintenance problems. The final section describes how to reduce the amount of dust that gets into the air in the first place, since once the dust is airborne it is always harder to control.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the domestic primary and secondary lead smelting and refining industries to determine the economic impacts of existing and proposed environmental, health, and safety regulations. The impacts are assessed in terms of capital and operating costs for existing and alternative smelting/ refining technologies. Industry response to regulatory implementation is estimated and quantified in terms of import value from lost lead production. For the primary lead industry, regulatory compliance may add up to 1.15 ¢/lb refined lead to operating cost for rehabilitated plants. Alternative smelting/refining methods could reduce net operating costs by as much as 4.36 ¢/lb refined lead. Capital expenditures would vary from $750 to $1,000 per annual mt of smelter capacity. Secondary lead smelter operating costs would increase about 3.8 ¢/lb refined lead to comply with existing regulations. Capital expenditures would average about $124 per annual mt of smelter capacity. Implementation and enforcement of proposed regulations would result in closure of the primary lead industry and additional expenditures for compliance by the secondary lead industry. Enforcement of the most extreme proposed regulations would force the secondary lead industry to close.

For a study such as this, which summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the numerous U.S. Bureau of Mines country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in the country and regional reports that comprise the five other sections of 1991 Minerals Yearbook-International Review, it is clearly impossible to cite all sources of information used in its presentation, but some recognition is due. Generally speaking, this study and its related detailed studies on countries and areas would be much more difficult, if not impossible, without the efforts of the personnel of national mining and geological agencies throughout the world. Information that they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or those of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations on which this work rests. Thus, appreciation is expressed to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies.

Longwall roof behavior is characterized by strata displacements in both the face-to-waste (horizontal) and roof-to-f1oor (vertical) direc-tions. The roof support structure provides resistance to this motion by translation of these displacements into vertical and horizontal support loading. Observations indicate that the shield reacts with both a vertical and horizontal force to uniaxial convergence (displacement). However, there are different magnitudes depending on whether the displacement is vertical or horizontal. This makes it possible to use supports as monitors of strata activity and loading. The Bureau of Mines examined this behavior using a linear elastic model of the support structure with two degrees of freedom. Vertical and horizontal load reactions were related to associated displacement actions of the strata. This was done by determining the stiffness of the shield under controlled vertical and horizontal displacement motions in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. This report provides example predictions of strata convergence and isolation of horizontal support loading due to vertical roof convergence using the linear elastic shield model. The report also examines efforts to determine strata behavior by direct measurement of support displacement.

Approach Fire hazards on large draglines were analyzed, then appropriate automatic fire sensing and suppression systems developed and in-mine tested. Physical beneficiation, leaching, and solvent extraction investigations were made to recover a high-grade thorium oxide product from Bald Mountain, Wyo., conglomerate. The monazite in the Bald Mountain deposit contains 8.8 percent Th02 and, therefore, is higher in thorium content than the usual domestic or foreign monazite. A sample of composited drill cuttings for the study contained 4.3 pounds of monazite per ton of are. The work showed that the monazite, although unusually fine grained and friable, could be concentrated by tabling and magnetic treatment to yield a product assaying 5.65 percent Th02 with a recovery of 61 percent of the thorium. Subsequent decomposition of the concentrate by treatment with sulfuric acid and solvent extraction of the resultant solution with a primary aliphatic amine yielded a thorium oxide product of 99-percent grade.

The Copper King copper-gold-silver deposit was discovered about 1880. Various individuals and companies have been interested in the deposit and considerable work has been done, although production, if any, has been small. The deposit is located in the western part of Laramie County, Wyo., and is favorably situated with respect to rail and truck transportation and high-tension power facilities. Mild summers and cold winters characterize the climate. Precipitation averages between 16 and 17 inches annually, with considerable snowfall in the winter. Permanent streams are small and most available water in being stored for use by Cheyenne, Wyo. Range grasses comprise the bulk of the vegetation, with small trees and shrubs common in the most rugged areas.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study of production costs for the secondary lead industry and determined costs for present, pending, and proposed environmental legislation. Operating costs for smelters by capacity groups range from 16.8 to 19.6 ¢!lb of refined lead. Present regulatory compliance costs for these groups range from 2.2 to 2.4 ¢!lb. Pending compliance costs could add 3.5 ¢!lb of refined lead, and proposed regulations could add another 1.3 ¢!lb. The individual capital costs necessary to comply with pending environmental regulations are estimated to be $1.8 million for small smelters and $10.4 million for large smelters. Proposed regulations could require additional expenditures from $1.9 million for small smelters to $4.9 million for large smelters. These cost estimates, based on average 1985 dollars, indicate that pending and proposed legislation could add significantly to capital and operating costs of the secondary lead industry. These regulatory compliance costs may result in a loss of up to 40 pet of secondary lead production capacity.
