Corduroy is used for saving gold in small Land large milling plants throughout the world. Investigations by the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mine indicate that corduroy blankets, used with or without a trap or jig in the mill classifier circuit, often are effective in concentrating gold and sulfides, especially if the gold does not amalgamate readily and if not enough sulfides are present to warrant the use of a shaking table, flotation cells, or cyanide plant. Most cold-mining countries include several or many small miner, that produce siliceous ores low in sulfides and gold, which can easily be amalgamated or caught in traps or jigs or on corduroy and shaking tables. At these mines the ore is crushed by stamps or bill mills, and the flow sheets include plates, flotation cells, and cyanide treatment, yet probably nearly as much of the pair minerals may be recovered by the less expensive plant. A well-known western maker of mine and mill equipment asserts, as the result of considerable observation of installed plants, that old and other valuable minerals should be caught as soon as they have been released by a mill, end recommends jigs to do this. A supplier of corduroy has informed us that at some mines this material is being replaced by jigs that catch gold as fine as 400-mesh. But for the small operator, inexpensive equipment such as a corduroy table may be better adapted and give a good recovery of gold and associated minerals.

Gas occurs in coalbeds in an adsorbed and a free gas state, Adsorbed gas is stored in the micropore structure and its transport is governed by Fick's law. The free gas occurs in the. fracture system and flows according to Darcy's law. These two modes of mass transport are interdependent. Production decline curves of coal-gas wells are of the constant percentage decline type and, thus, show no indications of flow characteristics peculiar to coal-gas reservoirs. The effectiveness of surface boreholes as a degasification scheme depends upon both good fracture permeability and a high fracture density. Conventional methods of reservoir engineering analysis are not applicable to coalbeds.

[The use of vapor-tight tanks has proved so effective in reducing the evaporation losses of petroleum that today practically all operators are using this typo of equipment. It has boon shown, however, that vapor-tight tanks should be supplemented with additional measures which will further reduce evaporation. Probably the most effective use of the supplemental measures are found on the small producing leases where the breathing losses from vapor-tight stock tanks materially affect the volume and gravity of the stored oil. The breathing loss from a vapor-tight stock tank that is filled and emptied daily is a negligible quantity. Also, the filling loss, which on the average varies between 0.1 and 0.2 per cent, usually is not of a sufficient quantity to affect materially the value of the crude. However, the combined breathing and filling losses from a vapor-tight tank requiring several days to fill are of sufficient importance to warrant the use of measures in addition to the vapor-tight tanks. The breathing losses are caused by atmospheric variations. Probably the greatest are the changes in atmospheric temperature which cause changes in temperature of the vapors in the tank. During the day, as the temperature increases, the gasoline-saturated vapors in the tank expand and are forced out into the atmosphere. At night the vapors are cooled and contract, drawing into the tank fresh air, which becomes saturated with gasoline vapor and is forced out of the tank during the following day. In Addition to the maximum and minimums temperature variations there are many smaller variations throughout a twenty-four period caused by showers, clouds, winds, and other atmospheric conditions which likewise cause the tank to breathe. The two mist common measures used by lease operators for reducing breathing losses in vapor-tight tanks are, first, operating; lease tanks under pressure, and second, the use of light colored paints anti tank houses. In this report these two methods are discussed together with their adaptability to lease operation. Results of experimental observations are given which show the reduction of evaporation looses where these supplemental measures have been used.]

In distributing natural and mixed gas, the industry is each year confronted with the problem of manufacturing gas in increasing amounts as the supply of natural gas becomes more nearly exhausted. The manufactured gas is now used in mixtures with the still available natural product, and will subsequently be used straight as a substitute gas. The gases that might be considered, and are producible by tried and developed processes, include water gas, carbureted water gas, and coal gas. Singularly, these gases can be used in this manner in ordinary appliances only when proportional amounts of them in the mixtures do not vary beyond rather definite limits, unless burner adjustments are made. The limits are defined by the specific gravity, content of inerts, and burning properties of the respective gases. Anticipating a future standard for city gas lower than that of natural gas during the period when considerable natural gas is available, there is justification for considering the possibility of re-forming natural gas and making a product that has substantially the same properties as other gases which can readily be generated. This report gives the results obtained during a series of tests made under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., re-forming natural gas at Toledo, Ohio, in full-scale operation in a water-gas generator having a grate area of 25.1 square feet. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Ohio Fuel Gas Co. constructed a special water-gas generator for the tests and provided men and the necessary funds for its operation. Appreciation is expressed for the general spirit of helpful cooperation which was evidenced in the activities of all those who took part in the work. "The town of Monson in Piscutaquis County, Maine is the, center of an important site industry. Monson slate has a nation-wide reputation, particularly for electrical switch boards, and the deposits have been worked for the manufacture of such products for many years. Open-pit quarrying is the method most commonly employed in obtaining slate. Underground methods have been used in the Peaon Bottom district near Delta, Pennsylvania, but the quarries that were thus operated are now abandoned. Underground methods have been used more extensively in foreign countries, the most famous example being the slate mines at Angers in France, where an over-head stoping method has been employed successfully for many. It is only under special conditions that underground methods can be successfully used. If the deposit is wide and relatively thin, or if the material is too unsound to constitute a safe roof, open-pit methods must be used, for slate is too low-priced a commodity to justify the heavy expense of any timbering methods. It is only where the deposit is relatively narrow, of great depth, and sufficiently sound to afford a strong roof that ordinary mining may be employed.The best slate beds in two of the three quarries operated at Monson are no worked by underground methods. The chief bed worked by the PortlandMonson Slate Co. is 10 feet thick, stands vertical and strikes N. 63º F. The slaty cleavage is vertical and crosses the strike of the beds at an angle of 5 to 10°. The grain or second direction of splitting is vertical and perpendicular to the cleavage. In addition to the 10-foot bed, to 2-foot beds and one 5-foot bed are available but are not now utilized. In theMonson Maine Slate Co. quarry (the old Pond quarry) a greater number of beds available, but at present quarrying is confined to a single bed about 9 feet thick which dips 30º S.E. and strikes N. 47ºF. The slaty cleavage is vertical and strides N. 45º F., while the grain strikes N. 45-50º W. and is also vertical."

"This report is () expansive test program by the Bureau of Mines to determine methods from various and ferrous manganese-grade product () widespread () and manfniferrous iron ores. Among the samples received for testing was one from the pits of the Barytes Mining Co., 1-1/ 2 miles northeast of Cartersville, Ga.. The property is approximately in the center of the Cartersville manganese district and shares a common corner with properties of the New Riverside Ochre Co. and the Etowah Development Co., both producers of manganifereus ores. The deposit is typical of the district and occurs in residual clays resulting from weathering of the Shady limestone and Weisner quartzite. 7/The property is developed by a number of open pits ranging to 60 feet in depth. In 1918 several carloads of manganiferous iron ore was mined from an alit on the property. Since then mining operations have been negligible. The ore is known locally as calico ore.A 4-ton sample representing -re as it occurs in the -pen pits vas furnished for testing. The sample consisted of a mixture of red iron oxides, wad, and clay, with small pebbles of manganese oxides and siliceous fragments scattered throughout."

An accurate knowledge of the water content of oil-bearing sands4/ now is recognized as an important factor in calculations of the flow of oil through the sands to producing wells and in the estimation of oil reserves. To this end the Bureau of Mines laboratories are using a method that is an adaptation of the A. S. T. M. method of determining the water content of petroleum products (1).5/ However, the apparatus and technique have been altered slightly, as described in this report, to increase the precision of the method without affecting the simplicity of procedure or speed with which determinations may be made. Until recently petroleum engineers, when estimating reserves assumed that the entire pore volume of the oil-saturated parts of producing sands was filled with oil, as it was generally thought that the oil, water, and gas in any formation had separated completely during geologic time into distinct layers because of their difference in density. In 1929 Lindthrop and Nickolaeff (12) reported experimental results from which they concluded that 22 to 30 percent of the pore volume of producing sands in the Grozay district, Russia, was filled with water when the fields were discovered. Since that time numerous investigators (5, 7, 8, 10) have found evidence of water in the sands of now oil-producing fields and old fields that never produced water with the oil.

"INTRODUCTION Ignitions of gas at the coal face when a blast is fired electrically are often a tributed to the explosive; but sometimes the ignition cannot be explained satisfactorily in this way-in fact, ignitions have occurred when the detonator has failed explode.The possibility of such electrically by sparks from the blast between poorly insulated leading wires and detonator leg have been recognized. Several countries have provided safe types of single-shot blasting units; some have permitted the use of larger multiple-shot blasting units provided each unit is equipped with a time-limiting switch that prevents unnecessarily long application of voltage on the leading wires after the shot has occurred, the assumption being that the firing line will this be dead before damage to the wires and subsequent sparking can take place. An extensive research was made by a French commission relative to the characteristics of electric detonators and methods of firing. Along other tailings they investigated the probability of ignitions by sparks across the leading wired at the face, also the time and duration of the various events in blasting, such as ignition of the detonators, movement of the coal face, and application of firing current. They suggested, as a means of eliminating or reducing tilt possibility of gas ignitions from the blasting unit, that the timing switch of the blasting unit be designed to disconnect the blasting"

Advertisements and articles in technical and trade journals announce the approach of a new age, in which plastics, light metals, laminated wood, and numerous other products or byproducts will be used in the construction of automobiles, airplanes, and furniture and equipment used in our factories, offices, and homes. Undoubtedly, after the war there will be many such developments which will introduce new manufacturing methods and new hazards to challenge the safety engineer. Already we know, from experience in laboratories and pilot plants where these new products are being tested, that there will be many fire and explosion hazards to be overcome. The danger of dust explosions may be one of the principal hazards, because thetic resins and other materials used in the plastics industry, as well as metal powders, wood dust, and other finely divided substances, are capable of forming explosive mixtures in air. Heavy losses of life and property have been caused by dust explosions in flour and feed mills, starch factories, and grain elevators, and it will be well to consider the possibilities that such losses may occur in any new industry and to provide all possible safeguards against hazards. Fortunately, we have learned something about the behavior of dust explosions and know something about the ease of ignition, limits of Explosive concentration, end pressure developed. Our efforts should now be directed toward the application of this knowledge in the development of safe operating practices.

The Bureau of Mines conducted drilling studies in the Pocahontas No. 3, the Pittsburgh, and a western coalbed to establish the gas migration characteristics for each. Gas pressures in the Pittsburgh coalbed were about 260 lb/in2 and in excess of 550 lb/in2 in the Pocahontas No. 3. Caving in drill holes prevented pressure measurements in the western coalbed. The Pittsburgh coalbed contained intersecting "clay veins" which formed gas pressure cells. Although these geological features hamper mining, they can be used to control the flow of methane into a mine working. Methane control techniques are proposed for the Pittsburgh and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds.

In the early winter of 1919 the Pittsburgh petroleum laboratory of the Bureau of Mines undertook the work of testing fuel oil samples representing purchases of the United State Shipping Board for ships sailing from the port of New York. fuel oil was, at this time, being bought on a contract which involved specifications issued by the United States Navy under dace of October 2, 1920 (See Bulletin 1, Oil Division, U. S. Fuel Administration.)The object of the Bureau of Mines in undertaking this inspection work was twofold. (1) The Bureau was in position to give, and the Shipping Board needed, reliable laboratory service for checking the quality of the fuel oil purchased, the value of which ran into millions of dollars for,year's supply. (2) It was believed, and later demonstrated, that the existing specifications did not insure the obtaining of a reliably satisfactory quality of oil.The objection to the specifications concerned the employment of a clause limiting the gravity of the oil. The inadequacy of gravity specifications for several types of petroleum products has long been recognized, and there was every reason to reason to believe that they were no more desirable for fuel oil than for gasoline, kerosene, or lubricating oil. A first and obvious objection was the fact that it is somewhat difficult to make accurate gravity tests on ""heavy"" residuum fuel oils. (The Bureau found it necessary to employ or such tests a rather tedious procedure involving the use of a picnometer and an accurate balance, as the simpler methods, employing hydrometer or displacement balance, proved unreliable in a large proportion of cases.) A second and more important objection was that gravity tests, even when accurately made, do not provide a reliable index of the actual quality of the oil.

The Bureau of Mines is currently developing methods for reclaiming the metal and mineral values contained in unburned urban refuse. One important phase of this research deals with recovering Mastic from shredded refuse using in electrodynamic separation process. The results of this study have indicated that mixed plastic concentrates analyzing 99.4 percent plastic can be consistently recovered from the light material fraction of shredded refuse, leaving a mixed paper traction analyzing 99.9 percent paper. Recovery of the plastic exceeds 99 percent.

All pipelines used to transport liquid fuels over coal mines are potentially hazardous; however, this publication deals only with dangers in transporting gasoline. Since transporting gasoline by this method is an established practice, the hazards connected therewith should he recognized by coal-mine operators and pipeline companies so that every known precaution may be used to reduce and keep the hazards to a minimum. The purpose of this paper is to direct the attention of coal-mine operators and employees, pipeline-company officials, and other interested persons to the explosion and fire hazards that arise from seepage of gasoline into underground mines. A hazard is not only presented in an individual mine when gasoline enters underground workings; but, in cases where mines are interconnected, a hazard exists in mach such mine.

A drill unit designed by Bureau of Mines engineers for testing various types of rotary bits has been in use since April 1950 at the experimental oil-shale mine near Rifle, Colo. The unit has a hydraulic drill and feed system, which provides the wide range of operating conditions necessary for adequate testing of drill bits and for obtaining data needed for the design of production scale equipment. Through the use of this unit, it has been proved that rotary drilling of vertical holes for mining the benches of the oil-shale mine is much cheaper than percussion drilling, and it is believed that in the near future the rotary drilling of horizontal blast holes in the top heading of the mine will prove equally economical.

The service given by a flame safety lame is twofold: It provides a safe light and it gives evidence of the condition of the mine atmosphere relative to the presence of methane and the deficiency of oxygen. Since the development of portable electric mine lamps, flame safety lamps are little used for lighting,but their use as detectors is as extensive and important as ever. A flame safety lamp in the hands of a trained user will definitely how methane concentrations as low as 1 percent, which in well below the lower explosive limit of methane and air. However, this does not always suffice, especially when making studies of mine ventilation, where it may be desireable to detect concentrations below 1/2 of 1 percent.

Abstracts of these comprise the balance of this document with one exception. The task ?d-c offsett currents," does not fall under the scope of the other report volumes and, further, the material to be presented does not justify a separate report. In April 1932, the Bureau of Mines published Information Circular 6595, entitled "Data in Reference to Installation of Cables in Shafts and Boreholes", in which were described methods followed in various sections of the United States when electrical circuits are taken into mines by means of cables suspended in shafts and boreholes. In view of the present tendency to extend high-tension cables along entries and passageways from the bottom of the shaft, borehole, or other point of entrance to coal mines rather than over the surface, it is deemed that the various methods of installing such cables deserve careful consideration, particularly in mines in which gas and coal dust contribute to explosion hazards. This is especially true of localities where there is an inclination to restrict the extension of 2,300- and 4,000-volt circuits into the mines. Probably it is feared that accidental contact with the cables of such circuits may result in more serious shock than with lower voltages; also, it is possible that new circuits are regarded merely as explosion hazards additional to those already existing, regardless of the manner in which the new circuits may be installed. It is the firm belief of some engineers that the circuits can be installed so that they will not be damaged by wrecks or roof falls, thereby eliminating the hazard of explosion from this source while at the same time making the chance of accidental contact remote if not impossible. Moreover, some believe that fire hazards from direct-current systems can be reduced by keeping motor-generator sets close to load centers. Thus, although the alternating-current circuits would be lengthened, the size and extent of direct-current circuits would be kept to a minimum.
