The mineral industry in Burundi was a minor contributor to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), which was estimated at just $1 billion for 19812. Coffee and tea continued as the Nation's major export commodities. Mineral exports consisted of small tonnages of wolframite, cassiterite, and baetnasite. Burundi's trade balance of payments situation worsened in 1981, with import payments more than double export revenues. Petroleum imports alone equaled 46% of the export revenue total. By year-end, the only indigenous fossil fuel source to have been found in Burundi was peat, which the Government had been attempting to develop to alleviate some of the petroleum import requirements. In June 1981 the Irish Peat Development Authority, Bord na Mona, signed a 4-year contract with the Burundian Government to supply technical staff for the ongoing peat project work there. Funding for the project was provided by the VS. Agency for International Development and the Government of Ireland. The new contract, which was an extension of ongoing peat research there, represented Burundi's increased awareness of the value of its large peat reserves for both energy and agricultural uses. At yearend, Burundi's Ministry of Public Works and Mines was does to selecting a contractor to study the feasibility of developing Burundi's phosphate deposits. The study would determine the potential for establishing fertilizer production facilities based on the country's phosphate reserves at Matongo-Bandaga, The study's specific objectives are to prove mineral reserve tonnage and grade, draw up mining and processing facility designs, estimate capital and production costs, and conduct a regional market and distribution survey. The cost of the study was estimated at slightly over $1 million, and it should take approximately 16 months to complete. The proposed project will mark the Burundian Government's first step in its plan to exploit on a large scale its natural mineral resources for advancing its agriculture-based economy. Burundi was dependent on imports, which are expensive to transport inland from coastal ports, to supply its domestic requirements for fertilizer. The performance of six dense-medium washers was evaluated in five preparation plants. Three of the plants were making a two-product separation that produced a clean coal and a refuse; one plant employed dense-medium vessels in series to effect a primary and a secondary separation; and one plant was equipped with a two-compartment washer effecting two separations in one vessel. The separate secondary drum-type washer produced a low-ash metallurgical coal and an intermediate-ash product suitable for plant fuel or steam generation. The two-compartment washer produced a premium anthracite product and a middlings product. The sharpness-of-separation values ranged from good to excellent for the five primary separations and for the secondary separation.

PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON announced at midyear that the test flight of the A-It plane, the world's first super-sonic aircraft capable of flying 2,000 miles per hour, was made possible by "the mastery of the metallurgy 'and fabrication of titanium." Not all of the contributions made by the mineral industry in 1964 were acknowledged so widely. Yet the contributions were significant as the search continued for new and improved methods for providing metals and mineral products to meet the ever-expanding requirements of the world economy. This chapter reviews only a few of the metallurgical developments that resulted from U.S. and foreign research efforts. MINERAL BENEFICIATION Up-to-date theory 'and practice in the mineral ,Processing field in 1963 involved subjects such as autogenous grinding, high-intensity magnetic separation, and mill control by computers. These subjects were fully discussed at the Seventh International Minerals Processing Congress held in New York City during September.

Reduce longwall shearer operators' dust exposures by more effectively suppressing the dust generated by the upwind cutting drum. Approach Direct more of the shearer water supply to the upwind drum, thus reducing the shearer operator's exposure to respirable dust while making more efficient use of water. How Proportioning Permits More Efficient Use of Water On most longwall mining operations, the cutting action of the shearer drums is the primary source of dust. Al-though the amount of dust generated is directly related to the amount of coal and rock cut by the drum, the exposure or the shearer operators to dust depends more on their work position relative to the upwind drum. When cutting with the airflow, the upwind drum, cutting bottom coal and floor rock, is the primary generator of dust reaching the operators. The lead drum is downwind of both shearer operators and is thus of less concern. (See diagram). When cutting against the airflow, the lead drum is upwind-taking a full cut, including roof rock-and both shearer operators may be exposed to very high levels of respirable dust. Currently, water sprays mounted on the cutting drum provide the most effective method of controlling dust from longwall shearer drums, and all longwall mining operations use some type of bit flushing or cavity filling water spray system on the cutting drums. Bureau surveys of longwall operations, conducted as part of its research program to reduce respirable dust, have indicated that six longwalls with better than average compliance records use higher than normal water flowrates to the cutting drums. The average water flow to the shearers at these six operations was approximately 60 gpm-about 50 percent more water than is normally supplied to double-drum longwall shearers.

Figure 1 is a reproduction of a chart recently prepared by the Bureau of Mines at its Pittsburgh Laboratory to show the Bureau's approval work in connection with electrically operated mining equipment. Nearly 27 years of approval work, covering 346 approved units, are shown on this chart. These approvals are arranged according to year of approval and the manufacturer to whom approval was granted. Forty-five manufacturers are represented, and a scheme of using various colored tabs permits the following subdivision of the equipment: Cutting machines, loading machines, conveyors, battery-operated locomotives, battery-operated power trucks, drills and drilling machines, rock-lusting machines, pumps, room hoists, air compressors,, and miscellaneous, The greatest number of approvals granted to a single manufacturer is 80; the next highest is 65, and the third is 49. Several manufacturers have been granted only a single approval. The chart shows all approvals granted for, motored equipment. Some of these units have since become obsolete, and a few are used to a very limited, extent if at all.

A 3-inch pilot hole was directionally drilled to intercept the Freeport coalbed horizon horizontally at Mather, Pa., as part of a Bureau of Mines degasification project. The original concept was to continue the horizontal drilling into the coalbed, after the initial intercept, with a total of three horizontal holes eventually being completed. However, the erratic thickness (0.0 to 4.3 feet) of the Freeport coalbed at Mather was not sufficient to sup- port the horizontal drilling degasification technique, and the site was abandoned after six attempts to locate adequate continuous coal thicknesses. The drilling of coreholes in the immediate vicinity of proposed well paths to evaluate coal thickness is essential prior to future slant hole operations. Although mechanical failures of the new directional drilling equipment, mud pump and rig breakdowns, directional control problems, and exploratory horizontal drilling in the Freeport horizon more than doubled the anticipated cost of the pilot hole, continuing improvements in directional drilling equipment and techniques should significantly reduce the time and costs of future drilling operations.

Since 1991 the Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC formerly part of the U. S. Bureau of Mines) has been tapping u valuable resource-researchers have recorded extensive interviews will, 30 individuals who are recognized as experts in the area of mine emergency response. These veterans related stories and observations from events experienced during as many as 47 years of response activities. Overall, the response veterans averaged 29 years of mine emergency response experience and 35 years mining experience. Individuals [ ] interviewed included representatives from mining companies, the UMWA and state and federal government agencies. This information was gathered so dial it could he provided to today's miners and to tomorrow's emergency response personnel. It is hoped the collective wisdom that has been obtained can be used to help train new responders and guide those decisions which mill have to be made on the scenes of future events. During interviews file emergency response experts were asked to discuss lessons they had learned through experience. The interviewers asked them to tell what they had learned that would cause them to handle similar situations differently and to tell about things they saw at past events shat the would warn others not to do in the future. In response the experts discussed a variety of things. Most of their responses, however, touched on some of the same topics including: preparedness, experience people on-site mine rescue teams, and decision making. A summary of their responses provides alt overview of [lie lessons learned on-site at tile largest mine disasters in the country.

8. Refuge Chambers 8.1 Refuge Chambers - Technical Discussion 8.1.1 Introduction As a part of the overall escape system, refuge chambers can provide a last resort when existing escapeways are blocked. These chambers are intended to provide both protection from toxic gases and a life supporting environment for a period of time before external rescue or further escape efforts can be carried out Escapeways may be blocked physically (due to cave-ins, etc), by fire, or by the presence of a toxic or oxygen deficient atmosphere. In the first two cases, the trapped miners would most likely await external rescue efforts, and hence the design of the chamber will have to consider the time durations that such efforts may take, It is also possible, in the second case, for fire fighting and fire protective equipment to be stored in the chamber so that miners may attempt their own escape. In the third case, it should be recognized that a compact, beltmounted 1-hour self-contained breathing apparatus has been developed(9), and that other, less compact equipment is available for up to 4 hours of self-contained breathing supply. If such equipment were stored in the chambers, then miners could escape by travelling from chamber to chamber, taking temporary refuge in each before proceeding to the next. 8.1.2 Background The concept of "barricading" has long been recommended for those emergencies where miners are trapped inby a fire. Barricading, which is the construction of a makeshift shelter in a crosscut or deadend, protects the entrapped miners from toxic gases and enables them to conserve a supply of air. In this manner, they can survive two or three days--hopefully enough time for them to be reached by rescue teams. In the past, many lives have been saved with this technique.

Many mines rely on toxic gas sensors to help maintain a safe and healthy work environment. This report describes a prototype monitoring system developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) that uses light to power and communicate with several remote toxic gas sensors. The design is based on state-of-the-art optical-to-electrical power converters, solid-state diode lasers, and fiber optics. This design overcomes several problems associated with conventional wire-based systems by providing complete electrical isolation between the remote sensors and the central monitor. The prototype performed well during a 2-week field trial in the USBM Pittsburgh Research Center Safety Research Coal Mine.

Because an economic method for preparing pure boron has not been developed, a program was started by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate existing techniques or to develop new methods for preparing the pure element. This report describes investigations directed toward the development of techniques for the preparation of pure boron by fused-salt electrolysis. Only two of the several fused-salt baths tested were satisfactory for the preparation of boron. These baths contained (1) potassium fluoride, lithium fluoride, potassium fluoborate and boron trioxide; and (2) potassium fluoride, potassium chloride, and boron trioxide. Of these two mixtures, the latter was more satisfactory. Elemental boron of from 90- to 95-percent purity and, in isolated cases, as high as 98-percent purity, was prepared from these two types of fused-salt baths. There appeared to be no distinct differences either in the yields or the purity of boron prepared at current densities ranging from 795 to 1,000 amperes per square foot. Current efficiencies were as high as 85 percent.

SCOPE AND APPLICATION The rules cover the installation and use of electrical equipment in coal mines.- For generating stations, substations, lines, and equip¬ment aboveground, reference is made to existing rules covering such locations, viz, the National Electrical Code and the National Electrical Safety Code and any existing State or municipal regulations. The purpose of the rules is to set forth methods for safe electrical installation. In preparing the rules five basic measures for safe¬guarding the use of electricity in mines have been followed, viz 1. Remove the contributory causes of accidents or danger. 2. Remove from the vicinity of electrical apparatus all elements susceptible to the influence of electricity. 3. Keep the electric current where it belongs, if possible; if not, limit the area of its activity by protective devices. 4. Use a. large factor of safety in the selection, installation, and in¬ spection of equipment. 5. Have full control of the operation of electrically driven machines. Laboratory tests on a combined nitrogen roast--two-stage leach--electro-winning approach show promise as a possible process for recovering copper, sulfur, iron oxide, and valuable minor metals (gold, silver, and molybdenum) with a minimum impact on the environment. During the nitrogen roast at 800° C, 15 to 20 percent of the sulfur together with a significant fraction of the volatile elements, such as arsenic, bismuth, lead, and zinc, are removed from the chalcopyrite concentrate. The resulting calcine, consisting of 8-chalcopyrite, troilite, and a bornitelike structure, is leached with hydro-chloric acid to remove 70 to 85 percent of the iron. The digenite in the leach residue is dissolved in an oxygen-saturated, spent sulfate electrolyte. Using a graphite 'anode plus sulfur dioxide to reduce interference from ferric iron, copper of 99.99+ purity is electrowon at current efficiencies of 88 to 92 percent and a cell voltage of 0.4 to 0.5 volt. Copper recovery for the overall process is 98 to 99 percent. Sulfur is obtained in the elemental form from the roasting and leaching steps. Iron can be recovered from the hydro-chloric acid leach solution. Gold, silver, and molybdenum are concentrated in the silica residue from the spent electrolyte leach.

Although local conditions at each mining property affect the percentage of increase in drilling speed for a given reduction in gage of bit, the results of drilling tests conducted at the Mount Weather testing adit show such a large advantage in favor of the smaller gages that they should be indicative of the possibilities at most mines. GENERAL DISCUSSION Although it is common knowledge among miners that drilling speed increases with reduction in gage of bit, the large amount o this increase is not so universally realized, A recent Bureau of Mines4/ survey of drilling practices in 28 metal mines showed that the maximum gage of starters is 3 inches and that at 50 percent of the mines starters are 2-1/4 inches or larger, Because this size appears too large for conditions at most mines where abrasion is moderate and where powder distribution permits, the use of smaller bits presents a favorable opportunity for reducing drilling costs.

[As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide thermodynamic data for advancement of mineral resources technology, the standard Gibbs energies of formation (?G°f) of MnS (manganese sulfide) and Fe0.9 S (pyrrhotite) were investigated with a high-temperature galvanic cell employing stabilized Zr02 (zirconia) as the electrolyte. Potential measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, MnS, MnO, S02 (g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0114 atm), Pt with the overall cell reaction MnS (s) + 1.5 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = MnO (s) + S02 (g) . (1) These results give the standard Gibbs energy of formation of MnS for the reaction Mn (s) + 0.552 (g) = MnS (s) (2) ?G°f = -66.487 + 15.19 x 10-3T±0.207 kcal/mole (896.4 - 1,208.1 K) (3) where temperature (T) is expressed in kelvins. Similar measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, FeO .9S, Fe304 , S02 (g, 1 atm) //Zr02//02 (g, 0.0114 atm) , Pt with the overall cell reaction 10/3 FeO .9 S (s) + 16/3 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = Fe.,04 (s) +10/3 S02 (g). (4) These results yield the standard Gibbs energy of formation for the reaction 0.9 Fe (s) + 0.5 S2 (g) = Fe0.9 S (s) (5) ?G°f = -35.229 + 12.67 x 1073T+-0.104 kcal/mole (839.5 - 1,086.6 K). Low-temperature heat capacities and high-temperature enthalpies for syn¬thetic Cu2S and CuS were measured. This investigation is part of the Bureau of Mines goals to provide thermodynamic data essential to the more efficient processing of copper ores, and thereby minimize the current dislocations in energy, environment, and mineral supply. Heat capacities were measured with an adiabatic calorimeter from 5 to 310 K, and resulted in S°298 = 27.76 for Cu2S(c) and S°298 = 16.05 cal/deg mole for CuS(c). Low-temperature values are tabulated for Cp°, S°, -(G°-Ho°)/T, and H°-Ho°. Enthalpies were measured with a copper block calorimeter from 298.15 to 1,600 K for Cu2S(c,1) and 298.15 to 780 K for CuS(c). The thermal behavior of CuS showed no transitions or other significant anomalies for the low- or high-temperature investigations. Cu2S showed reversible transitions at 376 K with an isothermal heat absorption of 0.865 kcal/mole, 720 K with an isothermal absorption of 0.280 kcal/mole, and approximately 1,400 K (congruent melting point) with a heat of fusion of 3.070 kcal/mole. High-temperature data are tabulated for H°-H°298, Cp°, S°, and -(G°-H°298)/T. Enthalpies are also expressed in equation form. The low¬and high-temperature data were combined with data from the literature to cal¬culate and tabulate ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf as a function of temperature.

Improve surface mine haul-age truck safety and efficiency by providing a means for sensing the weight and distribution of the truck's load. Approach The safety hazards and the economic implications of overloading mine-haulage trucks were analyzed to determine the net effect of that practice on mine operations. The analysis indicated that: Ten to 25 pct overloading is typical; Higher haulage, tire, and maintenance costs occur due to overloading (a 20 pct overload was estimated to increase operating costs 7 pct per ton); Ten to 15 pct of haulage? truck injuries and fatalities are attributable to overload conditions, at a cost over one million dollars per year to the mining industry. Vehicle-weighing technology that conformed to the performance specification for an off-highway haulage truck overload detection system was selected for in-mine testing. How It Works Normally, volumetric estimates are made during the loading sequence which do not account for the varying ore density. Hence, the actual weight of a load is never precisely known. By providing a precise measurement, an overload detection system will not only indicate vehicle overloading, but will also show under-utilization of the truck. One system tested by the Bureau of Mines was the ?Load Analyzer" manufactured by Pactronics Corporation in California. This system consists of a meter-type analog readout for the cab console and three "Electrosensors" (linear variable differential transformers) attached to the main frame. Using conventional welding and brazing techniques, two sensors are attached between the front members of the engine sub-frame and the top of the left and right trailing arms (one sensor per arm). The same techniques are used to attach the third sensor to the rear centerline of the truck. between the main frame cross member and the A-frame. The readout unit on the cab console indicates by color-coding whether each sensor loading is under (green), at (yellow), or over (red) the pre-set rated load. The three-sensor configuration with in-dependent readouts also detects uneven distribution of the load.

The experiments described herein were made at the request of Committee D-5, on Coal and Coke, American is n Society for Testing Materials, in order to obtain data as to the probable contamination of laboratory samples of coke Then pulverized to pass a No. 63 sieve of tine U. S. Standard Sieve Series2 by methods other than by ball-mills or hard-steel diamond mortars, which methods are specified-in the standard methods of that Society.3 After pulverizing, representative samples were analyzed by the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh for ash content to detect any contamination of the samples by the pulverizing apparatus. Preparation of Core Samples for Tests. Two samples of 48-hour beehive coke (Continental and Leisenring) made from Pittsburgh coal were selected for the tests. These cokes were crushed approximately to No. 10 sieve size, by first passing through a jaw crusher and then through a, roll crusher. The crushed coke was then carefully mixed and riffled into portions of about 800 grams each, and sent to three cooperating laboratories for grinding, through a No. 60 sieve. The Blue Metal corundum-andalusite deposit, in the Buckskin Mining district, Douglas County, Nev., was explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1945. The results of that work were presented in Report of Investigations 3895, exploration of the Blue Metal Corundum Property, Douglas County, Nev. published in August 1946. That report also describes the property in detail, giving location, ownership, history, geology, and data on beneficiation tests. Further exploration was carried on in April and Way 1947, the results of which are presented in this report. The work consisted of 175 feet of drift and crosscut, bringing the total to 398 feet of underground working, as shown in figures 1 and 2. The 23-foot drift, which was the last work of the initial project, was extended 99 feet northward along the shear zone, and three crosscuts, spaced at approximately equal intervals along the drift, were driven to country rock on the hanging and foot walls of the zone.

The necessity for protection against the hazards of lightning manifests itself from time to time in the mining industry by reason of loss of life, damage to electrical equipment, fires in surface structures at mines, and accidents in the handling and use of explosives. This paper is intended to assemble, correlate, and present some of the salient. points embodied in the available literature on the subject and at the same time give some factual data concerning instances of such loss of, life and damage to property, with special application to the mining industry The annual loss of life and destruction of property by lightning is considerable; the former may be prevented to a limited extent, though use of common sense as to exposure is required and not always followed; the latter can be prevented to a considerable degree. The manufacturers of electrical equipment,, through improved types of lightning arresters,, have done much toward the protection of electrical equipment, with consequent safeguarding of life and of property. Education based on unfortunate experiences has gone far to discourage the handling of explosives and blasting accessories during thunder storms, especially in open pits and quarries, and to a much smaller extent in underground workings. The lowly lightning rod plays an important role in the protection of certain types of buildings (especially isolated buildings), stacks, monuments, and other structures. LIGHTNING PHENOMENA In 1751, Franklin proved that lightning was simply a visible display of electricity - an extended spark; and until a generation ago little had been added to his exposition, to define the various phases of the phenomenon. Matters pertaining to lightning are discussed in the following references:
