A solar reflector soiling study was carried out at a ferromanganese smelter in South Africa to assess the soiling rates at different locations around the plant. Several meteorological parameters were monitored to give insight into the conditions that lead to increased soiling. Mineralogical characterization of dust samples collected from the reflectors and the atmosphere revealed that only a certain size fraction is of importance with regard to soiling, and that the dust can be attributed to both raw materials and smelter products. Proximity to the dust source was the primary driver for increased soiling. The site that experienced the most soiling was very close to raw material heaps; this was deemed an outlier and was excluded from the summary statistics. The secondary driver for increased soiling was location relative to the smelter dust sources and the wind’s direction and speed. The reflector set at the best location experienced 13.1% less soiling than the set at the ‘worst’ (but still feasible) location, represented by an averaged mean daily reflectance loss of 0.0186. The study revealed that while there are periods of intense soiling at this particular site, proper planning of reflector location in relation to the smelter dust sources can significantly mitigate the soiling rate.

This paper focuses on the role of the coal mine surveyor at the start of the 21st century. It demonstrates that surveyors must look beyond their legal appointment and pursue opportunities to add value at an operational or corporate level of the company. It also exposes the shortfall of statutory appointments in defining the surveyor?s role in terms of key business drivers of the company. One such an opportunity is the potential role of the surveyor in mineral accounting and quality assurance to meet mine requirements, market specifications and standards pertaining to corporate governance and reporting. Finally, some thoughts are expressed on what can be done to elevate current practice to best practice and how to achieve this goal

"Analytical Chemistry is moving rapidly towards a concept where technicians have to do no more than press a button and print the result from an instrument that is a featureless ""black box"". In this environment we must ask how much traditional ''wet chemistry"" is still required for undergraduate students.Methods that can be fully automated will become increasingly important. An example of such a method is that of the slurry nebulisation and ICP-OES analysis of precious metal concentrate. Grinding the sample and adding Triton X100 as dispersant, complete analysis time is in the order of 90 min as apposed to the traditional Carius tube method which could take as long as 24 h. For most of the elements studied, the results using ""in-house"" reference material for calibration and as samples as well were within the 95% confidence level. Elements of low concentration in the sample (As, Bi and Se) were not within that level."

Ion exchange is considered to be an effective technology for the removal of various impurities from cobalt advance electrolytes. With the correct choice of resin, ion exchange can consistently remove the required impurities to the levels for the production of high-grade cobalt metal. Although ion exchange was in the past used primarily for nickel removal, more recently it has been also considered for the removal of copper, zinc, and cadmium. Generally, granular ion exchange products are used, but Mintek is currently evaluating ion exchange fibres for a number of applications, including the removal of copper from cobalt advance electrolytes. Fibrous ion exchangers have major advantages compared to granular resins in that they have significantly higher reaction rates, and wash water volumes could be limited. Granular and fibrous ion exchangers were evaluated and compared for the removal of copper from cobalt advance electrolyte. A synthetic electrolyte containing 50 g/L cobalt and 50 mg/L copper was used for the test work. Equilibrium isotherms, mini-column tests, and split elution tests were done. The results were used to size a full-scale operation to treat 100 m3/h of electrolyte. The potential cobalt losses or recycle requirements were estimated, and data to calculate indicative operating costs for each adsorbent was generated. This information was used for a techno-economic comparison of granular and fibrous ion exchange systems for the removal of copper from cobalt advance electrolyte.

Block Cave mining is one method used to extract ore from underground diamond mines as well as other massive orebodies such as copper. This necessitates the excavation of many kilometers of tunnel within the ore body. The integrity of these excavations needs to be maintained over a number of years. Most Kimberlites and weak orebodies are extremely susceptible to degradation when exposed to moisture and the atmosphere. It is therefore essential that some form of weathering protection is applied as soon as possible after exposure. Conventional methods of weathering protection such as shotcrete do not easily fit in with the production schedule, hence the need for a more efficient system that could be applied immediately after exposure and serve as a temporary support or even as a permanent support medium. The main advantages of thin sprayed liners (TSL) compared to shotcrete are the ease of application, speed of application, early strength, much reduced transportation of material, less labour intensive and cost effectiveness. Several Thin Sprayed Liners suitable for various mining environments and geotechnical conditions are available and could be well suited as additional support the undercut level development in a block cave where this may be required. TSL offer a cost effective support solution as an alternative to shotcrete in areas where the building of a support structure is not a requirement.

Abstract: The amount of published literature pertaining to the field of rock mechanics has increased markedly in recent years. Whilst computer applications aid our understanding of the mechanisms of pillar instability, the applications do not take into account the effect of time; thus the determined pillar factor of safety has limited meaning. A more realistic approach would be to consider pillar stability in terms of time to failure. However such an approach would require a reasonable estimate of the in-situ pillar mass strength and a validated methodology linking the time to failure with in-situ pillar mass strength and the geometric layout of the working. Résumé: Le volume de bibliographie au sujet de la mécanique des roches a augmenté considérablement ces derniêres années. Alors que des modeles informatiques aident a la compréhension des mécanismes d'instabilité de pilliers, ces modèles ne prennent pas en compte les effets du temps; ainsi, la determination du coefficient de surete du pillier a un sens limité. Une approche plus réaliste devrait considérer la stabilité du pillier en fonction du temps de défaillance. Cependant une telle approche exigerait une estimation raisonnable de la resistance du massif rocheux du pillier ainsi qu'une méthodologie qui lie le temps de défaillance avec la résistance in-situ du massif rocheux du pillier et la géometrie de l'excavation souterraine. Zusammenfassung: Die Anzahl der Veröffentlichungen auf dem Gebiet der Felsmechanik ist in jüngster Zeit sehr gestiegen. Computerprogramme sind wertvoll um den Mechanismus der Pfeilerunbeständigkeit zu verstehen, aber sie vernachlässigen den Zeiteffekt. Daher haben die errechneten Sicherheitsfaktoren der Pfeiler nur begrenzte Bedeutung. Eine realistischere Bewertung wäre, die Stabilität der Pfeiler auf Grund der Zeit bis zum Verfall zu beurteilen. So ein Verfahren würde eine Schätzung der in-situ Gebirgsfestigkeit und eine validierte Methologie, die die Zeit zum Verfall in Abhängigkeit der in-situ Pfeilerfestigkeit und der geometrischen Auslage der Grube zusammenbringt, brauchen.

MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUSGENERALMEETING As the Minutes of the General Meeting held on June 18, 1969 had not yet been published in the Journal, the Chairman moved that their adoption and the discussion thereof be deferred to the next General Meeting. This motion was adopted unanimously. CHAIRMAN'S ANNUAL REPORT 1968/69 At Mr Kirchner's request, Mr. R. C. J. Goode took the Chair during the presentation of the Chairman's Annual Report. (This report was published in the August 1969 issue of the Journal.) OFFICE BEARERS AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS FOR THE YEAR 1969/70 The Chairman announced that the outgoing Committee had elected the following office bearers for the coming year: Chairman: N. A. Honnet; Vice-Chairman: J. N. Saunders; Immediate Past Chairman: J. G. Kirchner. The Chairman then read a letter from the scrutineers reporting that the following had been elected to the Committee: M. The Chairman thanked the scrutineers for their services, and congratulated Messrs Lawrie, Leimer and Zadkin on their re-election and Messrs Grobler, Lewis and Pearson on their election to the Committee. The Chairman announced that he had heard, with regret, that Mr. T. Zadkin would be leaving the O.F.S. at the end of August, 1969. Mr Zadkin had served on the Committee continuously since the inception of the O.F.S. Branch and records showed that he had only failed to attend three General Meetings in over nine years. The Chairman expressed the gratitude of the Branch for Mr Zadkin's invaluable services to the Institute, congratulated him on his well earned promotion and wished him well in his new position. INDUCTION OF CHAIRMAN The Chairman introduced Mr N. A. Honnet to the meeting by briefly outlining his past career and, after congratulating him on his election, called upon him to take the Chair. In congratulating the out-going Chairman on a very successful term of office, Mr Honnet said that due to the absence of many Committee Members for a large portion of the year Mr Kirchner had carried a heavy burden, and he moved a vote of thanks and appreciation for Mr Kirchner's efforts. This was carried unanimously. GENERAL BUSINESS There were no points raised under this heading. MINING AND METALLURGICAL CONGRESS The Chairman called on Mr W. R. Lawrie to give his talk on aspects of the Mining and Metallurgical Congress recently held in Britain. This presentation was illustrated with photographic slides and proved of great interest to Members. Mr D. D. Waterman proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Lawrie and the Chairman then asked Mr R. C. J. Goode to contribute to Mr Lawrie's address. Mr Goode thanked Mr Kirchner for his efforts during his very successful term of office and congratulated the in-coming Chairman and Vice-Chairman on their election. He then gave a brief talk on aspects of the Congress not dealt with in Mr Lawrie's address. These included the industry's requirements of graduates, the necessity of their rapid advancement and the desirability of sending such young men to attend future Congresses. Mr Goode announced that two symposiums will be sponsored by the Institute next year, one on Tunnelling and the other on Open Cast Workings.

Platinum-based alloys are being developed for high temperature and special applications for good corrosion and oxidation resistance. The microstructures are similar to those of nickel-based super alloys, and comprise ~Pt3Al particles in a Pt-based matrix. After assessing binary alloys, the best candidate system was found to be Pt-Al. Testing and selection of alloys based on Pt-Al were undertaken, where the ternary additions comprised Ru, Cr, Ta, Ir and Ti. As well as phase characterization work, mechanical and oxidation tests were undertaken. The best alloys were found to be Pt-Al-Cr and Pt-Al-Ru. However, the volume fraction of the ~Pt3Al was only around40 per cent instead of the ~70 per cent found in Ni-based super alloys. To increase this, trials were conducted on a range of Pt-Al-Cr-Ru alloys, the optimum composition being Pt80:Al14:Cr3:Ru3.Currently, further additions are being made to the quaternary alloys to change selected properties. As well as developing the alloys themselves, another part of the project is to compile a thermodynamic database using Thermo-Calc?. Phase diagram work has been undertaken so that the results can be input to Thermo-Calc? so that the descriptions of the phases can be optimized. The final database will allow the phases and compositions of selected alloys to be derived, thus predicting the alloys? components without necessarily undertaking further experimental work. This will aid the development of the alloys and will be a useful tool to the final developers of the alloys. As the orebodies become more complex and lower grade, there is an increasing demand from crushing circuits for a finer product. When the product from a crushing circuit does not satisfy the requirements of the downstream processes, the cost of production increases. Thus, enhancing the performance of cone crushers through optimisation of their operating factors becomes important. One of the key factors affecting performance of cone crushers is the filling of the crushing chamber during the operation. The effect of varying the filling of the crushing chamber of a cone crusher was investigated. To assess the crusher performance, parameters such as crusher capacity, power utilisation, and reduction ratio were used. Extensive plant trials were conducted to obtain samples and operational data when the crusher chamber was 50% full (half-full) and 100% full, which is 300 mm above the top of the crusher chamber (super-choked condition). The results indicated a 62% difference in the crushing capacity when the crusher was operated in a super-choked condition compared to the half-full chamber level. In the super-choked condition, the size-specific energy at 12.7 mm was 20 % lower than that of the half-full condition. The Bond ball mill work index (BBWI) of crusher product indicated that the BBWI of the product of the super choked condition is 5.6% less than that of the product of half-full condition. This can be attributed to the generation of micro cracks in particles due to increase in the interparticle breakage when the crusher was operated in the super-choked mode. This paper summarises a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialled at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

One of the ways of trauma and occupational diseases level reduction is noted to be the improvement of the labour protection measures planning. As an indicator for prospective trends determination in the labour protection planning improvement sphere economic risk has been proposed to be used. The trauma and occupational diseases analysis based on the correlative and regressive methods has been carried out for the “Vorgashorskaya” mine of Pechora coal basin. Trauma and occupational diseases occurrences frequency and economic losses value have been estimated. Trauma and occupational diseases economic risk distribution analysis has been presented in respect to the different subdivisions and occupational groups of “Vorgashorskaya” mine.

Abstract Hydraulic fracturing is a technology that has been utilized for more than 50 years in the oil industry. It was originally used for stimulating hard, brittle formations which typically exhibit low permeabilities and roughly linear elastic behavior. Nonetheless, an increasingly important segment of the industry is currently stimulating very soft and poorly consolidated formations; where the assumptions of ideal elasticity and relatively small fluid leakoff fail to hold (e.g. Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, Alaska, East China). In these rocks, hydraulic fracturing stimulation has been used for several years to control and solve critical production problems such as sanding and formation damage (caused during completion and drilling operations). Although successful1, the application of this method has not been accompanied by robust fracturing modeling techniques. In addition, long term production increases were often not materialized. In other words, engineers have been able, via trial-and-error, to avoid major ‘operational’ problems but with no optimization of such treatments. Thus, most hydraulic fracturing projects carried out in poorly consolidated rocks render unexpected results. A recent worldwide survey on net pressures by the Delft Fracturing Consortium (Papanastasiou, 1997) indicated that net pressures encountered in the field are 50% to 100% higher than the net pressures predicted by conventional fracturing simulators. The difference is yet higher for the case of poorly consolidated formations (Pak, 1997). The theory for the construction of a fully coupled elastoplastic three-dimensional hydrofrac simulator, specifically conceived for unconsolidated rocks, is presented in this paper. This novel model calculates the dimensions and changes in shape of the fracture(s) being created during hydraulic fracturing operations. No assumptions are made regarding either shape or geometry of the crack(s). Three main failure criteria are used simultaneously in this model: tensile and shear stresses, and volumetric strain. Incremental forms of the governing equations of equilibrium and fluid flow are presented. The scheme chosen for solving this problem is the finite elements method, which allows both equations to be solved simultaneously at any instant in time. Résumé La fracturation hydraulique est une technologie qu’a été utilisé pour plus que 50 ans dans l'industrie pétrolière. Elle a été utilisée au début pour stimuler les formations dure et fragile que typiquement ont des perméabilités basses et un comportement élastique à peu près linéaire. Néanmoins, un segment plus important de l'industrie stimule actuellement des formations mal consolidées; où les suppositions d'élasticité idéale et de relativement petite fuite de fluide ne se tiennent pas raison (par exemple le Golfe de Mexique, l'Afrique d'ouest, Alaska, la Chine de l'est). Dans ces roches, la stimulation avec fracturation hydraulique a été utilisée pour plusieurs années pour contrôler et résoudre les problèmes critiques de production comme les dommages de formation et d’ensablement (causé pendant les opérations de l'accomplissement et forage). Bien que prospère, l'application de cette méthode n'a pas été accompagnée de techniques robustes pour le modelage de fractures. En outre, les augmentations à long terme de production n'ont pas été souvent concrétisées. En d'autre termes, les ingénieurs ont pu, via le procès et l’erreur, éviter les majeur problèmes ‘opérationnel’ mais avec aucune optimisation de tels traitements. Ainsi, la plupart des projets de fracturation hydraulique ont été exécuté dans des roches mal consolidées et ont rendu résultat totalement inattendu. Une récente étude mondiale sur les pressions nettes par le Consortium Delft pour Fracturer (Papanastasiou, 1997) a indiqué que les pressions nettes qu’ont été rencontré dans le champ sont environ 50% à 100% plus hautes que les pressions nettes prédites par les simulateurs fracturant conventionnels. La différence est pourtant plus importante pour le cas de formations mal consolidées (Pak, 1997). Open stoping has become a popular mining method in hard rock mines, not only due to the safety of the method as a non-entry approach, but also because of the high extraction rate and low costs. At mine sites, stope performance is evaluated by calculating stope overbreak using the stability chart. However, limitations of the stability chart regarding the precision of the predictions, nonconsideration of factors such as the influence of blasting, and the exclusion of underbreak have led to non-optimal designs. The capabilities of today's computers have increased the amount of data being collected and the power of models being built. This article presents a step towards a new stope design approach where stope overbreak and underbreak are measured and georeferenced using octrees at an approximately cubic metre resolution and predicted using multivariate statistical models (partial least square, linear discriminant analysis, and random forest). Results show that overbreak and underbreak location along the design surface and their magnitude are predicted with good precision using a random forest model. These predictions are used to build the expected geometry of the open stope. The resolution of the data and the use of multivariate analysis has enabled the prediction of variation in stope performance along the design surface, going well beyond the simple qualitative per stope face prediction provided by a traditional stability chart approach.

The rebound phenomenon, which occurs during rockfalls when a rock block impacts with a slope surface, is influenced by several parameters related not only to the slope material but also to the block and the kinematics. The paper presents a small-scale testing campaign undertaken at the LMR (EPFL) to better understand and quantify the bouncing of blocks on granular slopes. The influence of some factors related to the ground material, the block and the kinematics is examined. Bei Steinschlägen wird die Flugbahn eines stürzenden Felsbrockens maßgeblich durch den Abprall vom Hang bestimmt. Der Rückprall hängt von verschiedenen Parametern ab, wobei nicht nur das Hangmaterial sondern auch Blockeigenschaften und Kinematik eine große Rolle spielen. Zum besseren Verständnis dieses Phänomens und seiner Quantifizierung werden am LMR (EPFL) kleinmaßstäbliche Versuchskampagnen auf granulären Materialien durchgeführt. Der vorliegende Artikel stellt die Versuche vor und untersucht den Einfluss verschiedener Boden-, Block- und kinematischer Parameter. Le phénomène de rebond qui se présente lors de l’impact d’un bloc rocheux sur la surface d’un versant dépend non seulement des caractéristiques du terrain, mais aussi de facteurs relatifs au bloc et à la cinématique. L’article présente une campagne d’essais sur modèle réduit entreprise au LMR (EPFL) afin de mieux comprendre et quantifier l’impact de blocs sur des matériaux granulaires. L’influence de divers paramètres relatifs au sol, au bloc et à la cinématique est mise en évidence.

Equipment selection in mining operations is an important issue, and also difficult to solve in multiple criteria environments. The paper in question has aimed to develop computer software for solving equipment selection problems in mining. In their paper, Basçetin et al. have analysed two case study problems related to open pit and underground mining method selection. By using Yager?s method1, the authors have selected 18 different criteria in the first case study and 21 criteria in the second case study. However, as emphasized by Ozdemir2, in pair wise comparison matrices the appropriate number of criteria should be seven as the maximum, from the point view of validation, consistency and redundancy. In cases where there are more than seven criteria to be handled, it is suggested that the criteria should be clustered and then the maximum number of clusters and subcriteria of every cluster should be limited to seven4.

A colloquium on 'Developments in the Mechanization of Mining Operations' was held in, conjunction with the 1984 Electra Mining Exhibition, at the Milpark Holiday Inn in Johannesburg on 19th September, 1984. An attendance of close on 200 delegates was testimony to the popularity of the subject. The delegates included a number of visitors from abroad, including senior members of the management of foreign companies and a member of the Council of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, United Kingdom. Both the local and foreign press was also represented.

Project evaluations of mineral deposits are necessary for mineral rights, owners and investors alike. A feasibility study provides a definitive technical, environmental and commercial base and is the key element leading to a decision to invest or not to invest. For example, the study may be used to justify further exploration and development expenditure or to provide a basis for a major underwriting to raise the required capital. There are three distinct phases in the development of a project and the type of study will differ depending on the quality of information available or the level of decision to be made. This paper looks at these three phases in the development of a mineral project and the type of study required; namely, a scoping study, prefeasibility, and a full feasibility study.
