The AK6 kimberlite is situated 25 km south of the Debswana Orapa Mine in Botswana and was discovered by De Beers geologists in 1969 during the follow-up of geophysical targets in the Orapa area. The kimberlite was not extensively pursued at the time as the initial bulk sampling indicated it to be of limited size and low grade, factors largely contributed to by the basalt breccia capping. Completion of high resolution integrated geophysical techniques and drill bulk sampling to depth recovered 97 tons of kimberlite during 2003 and 2004, which led to the increased size and grade estimates. Bulk sampling by Large Diameter Drilling (LDD, 23 inch diameter) commenced in 2005; 13 holes were drilled to a cumulative depth of 3,699 m and 689 carats of diamonds were recovered. In July 2006 the De Beers Mineral Resource Classification Committee classified these Phase I LOO results at a High Inferred level with an average grade of 24 carats per hundred tonnes (cpht) at a bottom cut-off of +1 mm, and a modeled average diamond value of 150 dollars per carat. A second phase of LDO drilling was initiated in 2006, and bulk sampling by trenching commenced in 2007 in order to deliver a resource estimate at indicated level. An Indicated Resource of 11.1 million carats at an average grade of 22 cpht was declared for the deposit mining lease application lodged in 2007.

n this study, silver and palladium nanoparticulate inks with different metal-binder ratios were screen-printed onto a paper substrate. The printed layers comprised the metal nanoparticles and an ethylcellulose binder. The layers are not typical metal composites due to the low concentration of binder and high porosity. The electrical sheet resistivity of each particle concentration was measured, and the data fitted using the scaling law of percolation theory and the general effective media (GEM) equation. The percolation parameters, i.e. the percolation threshold and the critical exponent, for each system were determined from the fits and compared. The percolation threshold for the palladium layer (39.8 wt%) was lower than that found for the silver layer (44.9 wt%). The critical exponents determined for the palladium and silver layers were both lower than the universal value for three-dimensional percolation systems. Microscopy observations indicate that the difference in the percolation threshold for the two layers can be attributed to variations in their microstructure.

"SynopsisThe process of joining materials by friction is based on generating the heat necessary to create a solid-state mechanical bond between two faying surfaces to be joined. In simple terms, the components to be joined are subjected to frictional heating between rubbing surfaces, causing an increase in interface temperature and leading to localized softening of interface material, creating what is described as a ’third body’ plasticized layer. This plasticized zone reduces the energy input rate from frictional heating and hence prevents macroscopic melting. The plasticized layer can no longer transmit sufficient stress as it effectively behaves as a lubricant (Boldyrev and Voinov, 1980; Godet, 1984; Singer, 1998; Suery, Blandin, and Dendievel, 1994). The potential for this solid-state frictional joining process to create high-performance joints between, for example, dissimilar materials with limited detrimental metallurgical impact, and reduced defect population and residual stress level, has had a very significant impact on fabrication and repair in industrial sectors such as transport. This paper presents a brief overview of the advances made within the family of friction processing technologies that could potentially be exploited in the nuclear industry as alternative joining and repair techniques to fusion welding.Modern friction processing technologies can be placed into two main categories: those that make use of a consumable tool to achieve the intended repair or joint (friction stud and friction hydro-pillar processing) and those making use of a non-consumable tool (friction stir welding). The most mature friction joining technology is friction rotary welding, where a joint is formed between original parent materials only. A new addition in this category is linear friction welding, which opens the potential for joining complex near-net-shape geometries by friction heating. The continuous innovation in friction processing over the last 25 years has led to the development of a number of unique processes and applications, highlighting the adaptability of friction processes for specialized applications for high-value engineering components.IntroductionAssessing the potential for using alternative joining and repair techniques for specific applications in a given industrial sector is informed by an appreciation of the current size and potential growth in that sector. Power generation by nuclear fission has been out of favour over the past few years, due to several high-profile nuclear incidents, e.g. the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, as well as concerns over disposal of nuclear waste and spent fuel rods. However, due to rapid increases in the demand for electricity, coupled with many fossil-fuel fired plants reaching end-of-life, there is renewed interest in installing additional nuclear capacity."

The sulphide flotation circuit at First Quantum Minerals’ Kansanshi mine in Zambia produced over 100,000 t of copper in 2019. For this circuit, mineralogical analysis has shown that the majority of the copper lost is hosted in fine liberated chalcopyrite, which is a paramagnetic mineral. The objective of this work was therefore to improve fine chalcopyrite recovery in the sulphide flotation circuit at Kansanshi, using a magnetic conditioning technology to agglomerate fine paramagnetic minerals. This theoretically increases the probability of attachment during collision and therefore improves recovery. A four-month paired ‘t’ test plant trial was carried out and comprised of consecutive ON-OFF periods with and without magnetic conditioning in the rougher flotation bank of the sulphide circuit. The experimental design involved assessment of recovery by size based on daily and weekly composite samples of feed and tails, sized using both wet-screening and cyclosizer. Both the daily plant data and the sized samples showed an increase in Cu recovery with magnetic conditioning ON. A 0.56% copper recovery improvement was measured with magnetic conditioning at a 99.4% confidence level. Keywords: Flotation, fine mineral, chalcopyrite, magnetic aggregation

This paper focuses on developing a comprehensive and pragmatic information technology (IT) strategy for low-margin construction activities. This forms part of the realignment of the general business strategy, and refocusing the operational model. The main elements of the IT strategy formation are analysis of the current IT environment in terms of software and hardware, carrying out a gap analysis, and developing individual functional digitalisation strategies in construction execution based on Building Information Modelling (BIM), business administration processes, communication, business intelligence (BI) and reporting, and data security. Further, substantial emphasis is given to the sustainable strategy implementation in terms of hardware and software readjustments, their integration, user training, and defining the way forward.

Process control optimisation depends a lot on the availability of timely data from production to give operators a chance to make adjustments before potential process upsets or disruptions happen. A lot of data is already available with newer and updated machine technologies, but what about the process upsets coming from the raw materials that we use? They are natural products and therefore they are not of a stable composition or mineralogy. The production process depends on a certain chemical or mineralogical stability of the raw materials when they come to a roaster, kiln or sintering stage. Only then can the proposed reactions take place and the equipment be operated at stable temperatures. Laboratory analytical technologies have the limitation that they depend on representative samples and have a long time delay. Therefore online (real time) analysers are used nowadays in mining applications to obtain an early indication of the actual mined or to-be-processed ore. Most available technologies can only analyse inorganic content on an oxide or elemental level. Near infrared (NIR)- based online analysers can overcome that limitation and give a real time analysis of organic as well as inorganic composition, if required on a mineral level. The paper will present two case studies where the NIR online technology was successfully adapted.: a) Optimising refractory gold ore processing at the Goldstrike roaster operation b) Optimising the sinter process at a Japanese manufacturer. Two detonation models, IDeX for ideal VOD and CPeX for non-ideal VOD, were used to predict the velocities of detonation (VOD) of five explosives: ANFO, a bulk emulsion, and three repumpable emulsions (R100 Gold, R100 Diamond, and R105). The theoretical VODs were compared with the in-hole VODs of the explosives, and the predicted and actual values were found to be within experimental error for ANFO and the bulk emulsion. The results were not consistent for the repumpable emulsions. The discrepancies can be explained as being due to variations in mining and loading practices. The results show that the detonation models can be effective tools in predicting the behaviour of explosives in different diameters and rock confinements, provided that the user is aware of the factors that can affect the optimal usage of explosives and equipment.

Submerged arc furnaces (SAF) are used extensively in the production of ferrochrome, where charge material – consisting of mixtures of carbonaceous reductants, fluxes such as silica, and ore in the form of pellets – is fed through chutes into the vessel. The feed typically forms a thick bed or ‘burden’ of solid particulates above a bath of molten material below. This burden layer surrounds three electrodes, which are typically arranged in a triangular configuration in circular SAFs. A major challenge in the industry is the availability of sought-after reductants, volatile market conditions, and increasing electricity tariffs in South Africa. A good understanding of the physical properties of the raw materials in the charge is therefore of great value in order to best deal with the reductants available at any given time, and thereby maximising furnace throughput. This paper presents a study of the effects of different particle properties on particle flow behaviour relevant to SAF operations. Discrete element model (DEM) simulations were used to estimate the sensitivity of the particulate flow of beds of charge material to properties such as the coefficients of friction, particle shape and size, and others. The present study lays the groundwork for the development of full DEM models of the SAF that will greatly improve understanding of the flow of complex mixtures of solid particles in the submerged arc furnace, and how the relative physical properties of each component in the charge can influence electrical behaviour of the burden.

Although additive manufacturing is fast gaining traction in the industrial world as a reputable manufacturing technique to complement traditional mechanical machining, it still has problems such as porosity and residual stresses in components that give rise to cracking, distortion, and delamination, which are important issues to resolve in structural load-bearing applications. This research project focused on the characterization of the evolution of residual stresses in Ti-6Al-4V extra-low interstitial (ELI) additive-manufactured test samples. Four square thin-walled tubular samples were deposited on the same baseplate, using the direct energy deposition laser printing process, to different build heights. The residual stresses were analysed in the as-printed condition by the neutron diffraction technique and correlated to qualitative predictions obtained using the ANSYS software suite. Good qualitative agreement between the stress measurements and predictions were observed. Both approaches revealed the existence of large tensile stresses along the laser track direction at the sections that were built last, i.e., centre of the top layers of the samples. This in addition leads to large tensile stresses at the outer edges (corners) which would have the effect of separating the samples from the baseplate should the stresses exceed the yield strength of the material. Such extreme conditions did not occur in this study, but the stresses did lead to significant distortion of the baseplate. In general, the microstructures and spatial elemental mapping revealed a strong correlation between the macro-segregation of elemental V and the distribution of the β-phase in the printed parts.

"Excessive amounts of moisture in product coal can influence the efficiency of downstream utilization processes due to a decreased calorific value and handling problems. Stockpiles can be used to decrease the moisture content of coal by means of gravity drainage and evaporation. This paper is focused on the evaporation of moisture from a coal stockpile surface with the aim of investigating the effect of particle size on the rate of evaporation as well as the depth to which evaporation extends.It was observed that moisture initially evaporates at a higher rate from a stockpile consisting of fine particles (-6.7 mm) than from coarser particles (-13.2 mm +6.7 mm). This high rate of evaporation is restricted to the outer shell of the fine coal stockpile. However, for coarse coal, the porous nature increases the depth at which evaporation occurs. Evaporation of moisture was observed up to the fourth day of each experimental run, after which steady state was obtained. It was shown the water can evaporate from the surface into the body of the stockpile, depending on the coal particle size and void spacing. An experimental reclaim depth of 0.4 m was achieved after 4 days. IntroductionCoal stockpiles serve as surge capacity for downstream utilization processes and can also be used for moisture reduction by means of gravity drainage and evaporation. Excessive amounts of moisture in coal can cause handling problems and, most importantly, will decrease the calorific value, leading to inefficient combustion.Research has shown that evaporation by means of wind and solar action is considerably more effective than gravity drainage(Williams, D.J. 2006), but the effect is limited to a restricted depth from the exterior of the stockpile (Boyapati, E. and Oates, A. 1994; CSEM-UAE, 2010). The effectiveness of wind and solar action can be improved by orienting the stockpile perpendicular to the predominant wind direction, maximizing the surface area of the pile, and reclaiming the coal from the pile gradually in shallow cuts over a large area (Williams, D.J. 2006)."

Confined bed comminution in High Pressure Grinding Rollers (HPGR) and Vertical Roller Mills (VRM) is gaining substantial attention in many applications. Previously used mainly for milling coal or construction materials, HPGR and VRM have started to complement or even replace tumbling mills in ore beneficiation. Materials like coal or clinker are relatively homogenous, however, in comparison to metal ores and wall rocks. This characteristic poses a new challenge to the confined bed comminution but also an opportunity. Fuerstenau and Abouzeid have investigated the selectivity in comminution of a mixture of particles of different strength in a particle bed. The median particle size and particle size distribution (PSD) of the two constituents used were kept constant. Only the proportion of the two constituents was modified. The competence of a material is, however, also a function of particle size. Smaller particles tend to be more competent than larger ones of the same material. If selective comminution is applied on ores, this size influence has to be understood. The paper presents research results on this topic based on experimental investigations with model materials as well as with natural particles, which were stressed in a piston-die press. It appeared that the comminution result depends substantially on the material characteristics and the composition of the mixture. Dimension stone mining is Increasing because of growing demand from the building and construction industries. Diamond wire saw cutting is a popular dimension stone mining technique around the world. Estimation of the production cost for this method is critical for these operations. n this research a production cost model was developed for the mining of granite using a diamond wire saw. Cost and production data were collected from a granitic dolerite operation in Pakistan for a 4.5-year period, and analysed to identify the cost components. Fuel (34%), labour (15%), consumables (40%), and maintenance (5%) were found to be the four major cost components in this operation. A regression-based dimension stone production cost model incorporating statistically significant variables was developed. The data presented a strong correlation of production cost with fuel, labour, and consumables costs. Finally, a production cost model based on the consumption cost of diamond wire is presented. The model was verified using actual production cost data, which indicated 95% (R2 = 0.95) variance in the data between the predicted and actual production cost values. The model may help field engineers in computing their dimension stone operational cost during the cutting phase.

Mixed fatty acids, such as oxidised paraffin soap, are frequently used as a substitute for oleic acid in flotation of scheelite in China. Not only because it is cheaper than oleic acid, but also because it is superior in flotation performance to oleic acid. This superiority is generally attributed to the mixed fatty acids' synergistic effect. In this paper, the synergistic effect of oxidised paraffin soap was investigated. We found it mainly consists of a series of saturated fatty acid salts, with six to nineteen carbon atoms. All the contained fatty acids were classified into four groups based on their chain length to make the research work practical. Also, the groups were labelled as 1, 2, 3, and 4 in order. The research was simplified into studying the synergistic effect of four equivalent collectors, instead of fourteen fatty acids. It is justified by the fact that neighbouring fatty acids are expected to have a similar flotation performance. The synergistic effect of the four groups of fatty acids was studied by single-mineral flotation with single groups, binary mixtures, ternary mixtures, and the full component, as collector respectively. The flotation performance index and synergy value were introduced to evaluate flotation performance and synergistic effect of groups, respectively. The results show that the mixture 1+2+3 has the strongest synergy of all followed by the mixtures 1+3 and 2+3. The mixture 3+4 and 1+2, on the other hand, have negative synergy. The synergistic effect of mixtures of groups indicate that being consecutive in length and a broad range of lengths are vital for fatty acids to enhance synergy. Group 3 is fundamental for the collecting action of 733 oxidised paraffin soap in the flotation of scheelite. The fatty acid soap in group 4 is not suitable for flotation due to its low solubility. "SynopsisThe combustion and co-combustion behaviour of macadamia nut shell, high-ash coal, and anthracite, along with their blends was studied using thermogravimetry. The reactivities of all samples were analysed in air, oxygen, and CO2 atmospheres and at different heating rates from 10 to 40°C/min. Macadamia shell was found to have a lower ash content, 0.36%, than coal with 27.49% ash. The calorific values were similar, 19.64 MJ/kg and 19.44 MJ/kg respectively. The differential thermogravimetric results indicate that as the heating rates increase the ignition, peak, and burnout temperatures increase significantly, leading to high combustion rates. The interaction between the fuels was evaluated using the weighted average model, and the results indicated that there is more synergetic interaction between 20% macadamia plus 80% coal under oxygen than in air and CO2 atmospheres. The results of the investigation provide the combustion and co-combustion characteristics of various samples and their blends and indicate their combustion compatibilities. IntroductionThe global macadamia nut industry is developing at a very rapid rate. South Africa is currently the world’s third largest producer, with a production of about 35 000 t as of 2012 (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 2013), compared to 840 t produced in 1996. The greatest numbers of the macadamia nut farms in South Africa can be found in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, with Mpumalanga as the largest producing area. There are many factors influencing the increased demand for macadamia nuts, the most important factor perhaps being their nutritional value (California Dried Fruit and Nuts, 2011; MPC, 2014) and their suitability as a feedstock for manufacturing cosmetics, bakery products, nut paste, chocolates, sauces, and ice-cream. As a fuel, macadamia shell has a high heating value ‘as-fired’ of about 20.71 MJ/kg (Vhathvarothai et al., 2013), which could in turn be used in drying the nust, and the shell could also be milled and applied as a fertilizer."

The output of palladium in the U.S.S.R. greatly exceeds the internal usage. The primary purpose of this 200 page volume is therefore to record details of fundamental researches on the properties of this metal with a view to expanding its marketability. Theoretical studies have revealed a number of alloys with great promise in electrical instruments and for the chemical industry. The success of these researches in the U.S.S.R. and in the U.S.A., resulted in the industrial usage of palladium exceeding that of platinum in 1957 and increasing its lead during the next decade. This volume is divided into three parts. Section I covers the mineralogy, extraction and the physical metallurgy of the metal. It records a considerable area where the resistance to corrosion of palladium equals that of platinum. Section II deals with the preparation and the properties of palladium in alloys and contains a comprehensive metallographic treatment of the many binary alloy systems. Section III is devoted to industrial applications. The 460 references which are quoted are mainly from the U.S.S.R. but otherwise have a world-wide coverage. H.B.

We report on the development of a finite-element method model for a pilot furnace for the production of manganese alloys. The model is a multiphysics model that addresses material flow, electrical conditions, heat transfer, and physical and chemical transformations. It is capable of studying both quasi-steady and transient states in time-dependent simulations. The model includes common charge materials and fluxes and can simulate production of both ferromanganese and silicomanganese alloys with acid and basic slags, as well as changing charge compositions. The model output provides access to the material distribution in the furnace during furnace runs, temperature profiles, current paths, energy balances, and alloy and slag production rates and compositions.
