The extraction of Cu(II) from HCl media using Cyanex 923 in kerosene was investigated. The effect of shaking time, aqueous phase acid concentration, extractant concentration, chloride ion concentration, various metal ions (Mn2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and Ni2+), and temperature on the extraction were studied. Using 0.1 M Cyanex 923 the extraction of Cu(II) was 6.7 per cent from 3 M HCl, which increased up to 78.5 per cent with 6.5 M HCl and then decreased due to acid extraction by the extractant. The maximum extraction (97.5 per cent) was obtained with 1 M Cyanex 923 from 5 M HCl solution. A mathematical model has been developed to describe solvent extraction equllibria over wide ranges of concentration of extractant, acid, and chloride ions. The composition of the extracted species has been predicted on the basis of slope analysis results and extraction equilibrium modelling. The negative values of enthalpy change and entropy change confirm the exothermic formation of the extracted complex.

Abstract Several zones with expansive rocks were encountered during construction of two tunnels of the water conduction system for the Chacabuquito Hydropower Plant, located in the Aconcagua river valley of the Chilean Central Andes Mountains, at elevation 1.075 m a.s.l., and 65 km north-northeast of Santiago. The expansive behavior was associated to three different geological features. Firstly with the crossing of important north-south trending faults, with montmorillonitic and caolinitic fillings. Secondly to the presence of zones of rock mass showing a penetrative presence of clay minerals (montmorillonite, illite and caolinite) and penetrative thin veins of ceolites. And thirdly to the hydrothermal alteration of the rock and the consequent generation of clay minerals (predominantly montmorillonite, sericite and minor caolinite). The geological and mechanical characteristics of the expansive rock domains, as well as the field and laboratory reconnaissance and characterization program, are described in the paper together with the bases for design and the guidelines for construction and definitive tunnels support. Resúmè Pendant l’excavation des deux tunels du système d’adduction d’eau pour alimenter la centrale hidroélectrique Chacabuquito, plusieures zones de rochers expansifs ont été découvertes. Ces tunnels sont dans la vallée du fleuve Aconcagua de la Cordillère des Andes du Chili Central, à une altitude aproximée de 1.075m s.m.n. et à 65km vers le nord-nord-ouest de Santiago. Cette conduite expansive est associée à trois différentes caractéristiques géologiques du massif rocheux. Un premier lieu, à l’intersection de plusieures zones de failles, d’orientation nord-sud et subverticales, avec remplissage de rochers désintégrés, montmorillonite, caolinite et sérite. En seconde lieu, a la présence de zones de rochers expansifs, avec des nombreux minces veines de céolite-calcite et aussi des minéraux argileux (montmorillonite, illite et caolinite). Et, dans troisième lieu, dût à la présence de zones d’altération hidrothermale du massif rocheux et la conséquente génération de minéraux de remplacement argileux (surtout sérite, montmorillonite et en plus petit degré, caolinite). The ability to perform three dimensional imaging at micron-scale resolution of real mineral floc sediments and structures using commercially available Micro X-ray Tomography (XMT) instrumentation can be used for the analysis of aggregates and granules, liberation and dewatering of sediments. This paper presents are view of recent work by the authors relevant to the mining and minerals industries. It covers three main topics: X-ray imaging of agglomerates and multi-component mineralic particles,, permeability of sediments, and dissolution of granules with potential application to heap leaching.

The Skorpion Zinc Project demonstrated the viability of the production of zinc from non-sulphide (commonly called ?zinc-oxide?) ores, using the leach/solvent extraction/electrowinning process route. The success of Skorpion raised the profile of a number of other zinc oxide deposits, considered to be similar. However, a study of three such deposits demonstrates that the application of whole-ore-leaching may be limited and that the concentration of zinc, or at least the separation from acid-consuming gangue minerals, prior to leaching is essential to the successful recovery of zinc from these deposits. The recovery of zinc is dependent on an understanding of the geology of the deposit, the mineralogical association of zinc minerals with gangue minerals (Boni, 2005) and limitations of mining practice. Flowsheet development and the associated metallurgical testwork to derive an economically viable treatment route from two of these deposits are discussed. Key parameters affecting zinc recovery by gravity separation and flotation are presented, demonstrating that even minor differences in mineralogy have a profound impact on zinc recovery and reagent consumption. The study also deals with the determination of appropriate design parameters through metallurgical mapping of the dense media separation process.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently conducted full-scale explosion experiments; these experiments evaluated the strength characteristics of various seal designs used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests were conducted within the multiple entry section of PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) employing the only currently accepted test method endorsed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for seal design in American mines. These explosion tests are labor-intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. Therefore, the PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept, that can facilitate the in-situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from tests in these chambers compare favorably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. Preliminary size-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of standard seal designs as a function of entry size is also presented. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the new facilities also allow for the determination of the seal's ultimate failure pressure. This new approach shows promise as an alternative evaluation method for improving mine sealing technologies which, in turn, will enhance the safety of the underground personnel.

The depletion of favourably located and higher-grade mineral deposits, combined with more favourable metal prices and higher capital costs, has stimulated research into heap leaching of lower grade ores and wastes. This has resulted in renewed interest in heap leaching of uranium ores, and in the development of processes for the bacterial heap leaching of low-grade chalcopyrite ores and the acid heap leaching of nickel laterites. A complete programme of heap leach testwork typically involves a sequence of bottle roll tests and column tests, followed by piloting on test heaps. The initial testwork is aimed at determining the amenability of the ore to heap leaching, which depends on the characteristic of the ore with respect to porosity and permeability to leach liquor, acid consumption, metal recovery and percolation. Subsequent phases of the testwork focus on the development of the process design criteria for the treatment of the ore. Basic techno-economic models have also been developed as a tool for the initial estimation of heap leach viability. Mintek has also developed in-heap monitoring probes, coupled to an operator guidance system, in order to assist the operator in achieving optimal conditions for bacterial growth and heat preservation during pilot-plant operation.

The key driver for choosing a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler is the ability to burn a wide range of fuels with highly efficient combustion while meeting low emission requirements. Reduced sorbent and water consumption compared with pulverized coal (PC) plants and the ability to deal with corrosive fuel constituents while still meeting local regulations make a CFB boiler-based power plant particularly attractive. CFB-based power generation is particularly relevant in coal mining areas. During mining, a portion of the roof and floor material may be extracted along with the coal seam in order to create adequate working height for the equipment and miners. Therefore, run-of-mine coal which comes directly from the mine contains impurities. The raw coal can undergo a washing or screening process in order to improve its quality by reducing the ash content in the fuel in order to sell it on the export market or to comply with domestic customer requirements. The coal discarded from the washing process usually has a high ash content and difficult mechanical properties resulting from the initial properties, the mining, and the coal cleaning processes. It can contain a large volume of stones or can be very fine as a result of the washing treatment. To create value from burning this discarded coal, the boiler supplier has to meet several technical challenges in developing the appropriate design. This paper highlights the performance achieved with Alstom's CFB boilers developed for power generation over the last two decades to extract value from discarded coals. Emile Huchet Power Plant is the first 125 MWe CFB unit developed for burning coal slurries (called schlamms in France). The Emile Huchet discarded coal fuel is a very fine high-ash residue with an average particle diameter by mass (d50) of around 80 µm as received from the washing plant. The paper describes the performances and the basic design of the CFB boiler to manage such a fine fuel. The performances of two other CFBs of approximately 300 MWe output in operation in the USA and PR China are also mentioned to demonstrate the capability of this technology to burn either low-volatile bituminous or anthracite waste coals. The significant issues experienced during commissioning are reported, and the conceptual choices for burning such fuels are mentioned.

Gone are the days of stock-standard diamond beneficiation and final recovery circuits that could, with minor modifications, be adapted to treat any diamond-bearing ore source. A new era has dawned, offering the opportunity to streamline existing diamond processing operations or develop simpler, more efficient, and economical diamond processing plants, with the focus on more efficient comminution, beneficiation, and final recovery. This change in scene has been brought about by: ? The introduction, rapid development, and maturation of multiple comminution, sorting, and recovery technologies ? The need to adapt to a new standard of project approach post the commodity super-cycle phase, where optimizing existing operations and developing scalable, ?fit for purpose? new mines are fast becoming the norm in diamond processing plants in both primary and alluvial operations ? The quest for energy efficiency and lower labour costs ? More remote and inaccessible reserves (under lakes, tops of mountains etc.). This paper serves to identify some technology advances and demonstrates how these could be considered as replacements for or in combination with conventional technologies to arrive at an optimum techno-economic solution. To name a few applications/technologies: ? Comminution: conventional cone crusher, modified/specialized cone crusher, and the high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR). Although significant advances have been made in recent years, this paper only briefly covers comminution within the beneficiation circuit design ? Waste sorting: NIR (near-infrared) sorting, optical (colour) sorting, XRF (X-ray fluorescence) ? Primary concentration by combining dense media separation (DMS) with either XRT (X-ray transmissive), pulsed X-ray, jigs, or pan plants depending on the application, scale, and economics ? Final recovery of diamonds with either conventional X-ray technology, pulsed X-ray technology, or XRT. From recent studies, it can be concluded that there is no longer a standard solution, but rather the ?right? or appropriate solution. Through combining a sound knowledge of the ore source (ore dressing studies or onmine data gathering) and leveraging off the advances in technologies, one is able, through trade-off studies, to arrive at the ultimate techno-economic configuration, the ?right? solution. Emphasis is placed on maximizing diamond recoveries through appropriate technology selection and minimizing the associated costs in an effort to de-bottleneck or improve efficiencies of existing diamond processing plants, or to arrive at the ideal new diamond process plant design..

"Slope stability analyses have traditionally been undertaken in two dimensions assuming plane strain conditions. Although three-dimensional analysis techniques are widely available and used routinely for open pits, two-dimensional analyses are still more common due to the relative ease of model construction and the relatively rapid simulation times.Two-dimensional analyses will often produce different results to three-dimensional analyses for the same slope. It is generally thought that two-dimensional analyses will produce more conservative results. The main reason for the differences is the ability of three-dimensional analyses to account for the three-dimensional nature of the various model inputs, including the slope geometry, the distribution of soil and rock mass domains, the orientation of geological structures with respect to the excavation face, the orientation of the in situ stresses, and the distribution of pore pressure. In some cases, for a long, straight slope in basic geological conditions, two-dimensional analyses can provide a reasonable representation of the problem. However, in many cases, the inability of a two-dimensional analysis to represent the true three-dimensional nature of the problem will lead to unrealistic analysis results.This paper discusses the reasons, as detailed above, for the differences in two-dimensional and three-dimensional analysis results. Work by others is summarized, and additional numerical analyses are performed to provide an improved understanding of the effects of slope geometry, structural orientations, and in situ stresses on predicted stability. Case studies are presented for both stable and unstable slopes, and the behaviour of these slopes is related to the three-dimensional nature of the slope geometry and geology.The previous work, the new analyses performed here, and the case studies show that it is often important to provide a realistic representation of the slope in three dimensions in order to obtain reasonable stability analysis results. This is particularly true for hard rock environments where structurally controlled failure mechanisms are most likely. The paper also highlights the fact that back-analysed properties obtained from one analysis technique are not necessarily applicable to forward analyses using another technique."

We consider in this paper the use of a modified version of Hotelling?s statistic in the analysis of particle size distributions. The statistic can be adversely affected by the presence of outliers among the data. We propose a competitor to the statistic that is based on ranks, and hence is less sensitive to outlier effects. The results of a Monte Carlo study suggest that the rank test is highly competitive with the Hotelling test in its ability to detect differences between two mass size distributions. The calculation of the rank statistic is explained in detail and its application is illustrated on two sets of data.

"The coal strength parameter is used in operations such as the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing/grinding equipment. However, coring or cutting prismatic specimens from coal for the standard strength tests is difficult, and sometimes not possible. For this reason a method for the indirect determination of coal strength from easy tests would be useful. In this study, the predictability of coal strength from the needle penetration test was investigated. This is a very easy and practical test method. Point load and needle penetration index (NPI) tests were carried out on coal specimens from Çayirhan coalfield in Turkey. The point load indexes were converted to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values by using the general conversion factor. The UCS and NPI values were evaluated using regression analysis. A strong linear relationship was found between the two parameters. The conversion factor for the UCS-NPI ratio is 0.35 for the tested coal samples. It is concluded that the UCS of coal can be predicted from the NPI.IntroductionKnowledge of coal strength is important for the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing and grinding equipment. Uniaxial compressive strength of coal is used in designing pillar dimensions in room and pillar mining. Coals always contain bedding planes and cleats; they are also brittle and fragile. Therefore, coring or cutting prismatic specimens from coal for the standard strength tests is difficult, and sometimes not possible. For this reason, a method for the estimation of coal strength from easy tests would be useful.The needle penetration test is a nondestructive index test that is applicable both in the field and the laboratory and does not require any special sample preparation. The test has been used for the estimation of physical and mechanical properties of weak or soft rocks (Okada et al., 1985; Yamaguchi et al., 1997; Takahashi, Noto, and Yokokawa, 1988; Uchida et al., 2004; Aydan et al., 2006; Aydan, Watanabe, and Tokashiki, 2008; Aydan, 2012; Erguler and Ulusay, 2007; Park, Obara, and Kan, 2011; Ulusay and Erguler, 2012; Aydan and Ulusay, 2013; Aydan. The practice of ilmenite smelting in electric arc furnaces has been researched and published over the last few decades. An issue that has not been addressed is the understanding of the properties of ilmenite smelting reductants, and linking these properties to the subsequent smelting behaviour in the furnace. The reduction mechanism of ilmenite smelting is not fully understood, but it is believed that the Boudouard reaction plays a role. This paper sets out to consider a specific type of corrosion protection system, which is referred to as a Duplex Coating system. The dictionary describes a duplex system as consisting of two elements or a “twofold” composition. The duplex system described in this presentation is such a two-part corrosion protection coating, viz, hot dip galvanizing as the firm base or primer, followed by a top paint system designed to combat severe corrosive environmental conditions encountered in nature. In principle, the duplex system is a cost effective and balanced, designed coating that is suited to the environmental conditions and service life requirements.

A control philosophy to be applied by Lonmin to maintain constant electrode immersion in their no. 1 circular smelting furnace is put forward. This control philosophy is facilitated though a combination of thermodynamic models used to predict the slag composition and empirical correlations to estimate the furnace geometric factor as well as the slag conductivity. The model can determine the operating resistance set point required in order to maintain a desired electrode immersion as a function of the feeds to the furnace, slag level and temperature. If modifying the resistance set point cannot maintain the desired immersion without moving out of the furnace P-V-I operating envelope, the model can be used to determine the amount of slag modifiers (silica or lime) required to shift the slag chemistry back into a region where the immersion can be controlled though resistance set point manipulation.

China?s engagement with the African continent has increased impressively in the past decade. Even though China is not the African continent?s largest stakeholder, the rapidly increasing engagement is evident in the huge number of Chinese migrants that have come to Africa in the wake of unprecedented trade and investment levels, as well as in increasing diplomatic and political interactions, which has taken most other commercial partners by surprise. All but four countries in Africa have adopted the ?One China?1 policy stance; and in so doing opened the door for new or strengthened commercial dealings with China, including increasing investments into Africa?s extractive industries. This has been particularly evident since the turn of the century, with a clear shift in China?s policy towards Africa elevating the continent in China?s foreign policy objectives. As such, Africa has become a strategic focus2 for Chinese outward bound and internationalizing companies, especially in the extractive industries. This planned shift in focus is based largely on geo-strategic and commercial needs and interests, rather than previous ideological ones.3

Vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalyst has been utilized to oxidize SO2 to SO3 since the early 1900s. This versatile product displaced the expensive and easily poisoned platinum-based catalyst in nearly all applications by the 1930s. MECS has been manufacturing the vanadium-based catalyst since 1925 and today is the leading supplier in the world of sulphuric acid catalysts in a variety of forms. Currently, MECS has worldwide customer/technical support for the catalyst as well as a dedicated catalyst manufacturing plant in Martinez, California. MECS also has a strong technical and research and development programme dedicated to creating new and improved products and services. This paper will describe some of the technical details of vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalysts as well as offering a unique look into how caesium-promoted MECS catalysts can be used in single and double absorption acid plants, and off-gas plants running on irregular gas feeds, to reduce emissions and preheater run times. An update on MECS technical services extended for use in characterizing converter performance is also presented.

The Hillendale mine (situated between Richards Bay and Empangeni) and Mineral Separation Plant were approved in 2000. The smelter, just outside Empangeni, consists of two 36 MW DC arc furnaces that were commissioned in 2003. Experiences gained during the initial commissioning of the furnaces proved valuable in later commissioning work, as shown by the increase in ramp-up rates. The capacity of the plant is 250 kt/a TiO2 slag and 145 kt/a of pig iron.

The management of risks associated with slope instability is an essential process in the safe and economic operation of open cut mines. The ?slope stability radar? (SSR) has been developed to better manage those risks. The SSR remotely scans rock slopes to continuously measure any surface movement and can be used to detect and alert users of wall movements with sub-millimetre precision. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face can allow for a better understanding of the geomechanics of slope deformation, including magnitude of potential failures and additional warning time of impending instability. Additionally, radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. SSR systems have been deployed in many mines in Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, Zambia, Chile and the United States. Greater than 70 rock falls and waste dump failures (from several to millions of tonnes) have been monitored, and on every occasion precursor ?warning? movements were recorded by the SSR. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining. This paper will present recent case studies of the SSR operation in coal and metalliferous mines.

Platinum metal prices have risen significantly during the past 18 months, and have remained at elevated levels. Driving these bullish prices are sustained jewellery demand, mainly from the Far Eastern markets, and ongoing autocatalyst usage in response to ever more demanding global environmental legislative requirements. Within South Africa, the areas north and south of the Steelpoort River in the Eastern Bushveldare well known for their significant resources of platinum. The bulk of the resources have lain dormant in anticipation of the very situation that is currently occurring in the marketplace. Anglo Platinum is the largest primary platinum producer in the country, and is uniquely positioned to take advantage of the current elevated metal prices and shortfall in supply of platiniferous metals.
