South Africa produces about 400 Kt zircon (ZrSiO4) per annum. This represents about 30 percent of the global demand. However, very little is beneficiated locally and more than 95 percent is exported with little or no value addition. Zircon is a very inert material and needs to undergo high-temperature alkaline melting processes to produce valuable zirconium products. The conversion of zircon to plasma-dissociated zircon (PDZ) produces a chemically reactive species (ZrO2.SiO2) which consist of finely divided submicron monoclinic ZrO2 crystals dispersed in a SiO2 matrix. In this paper, an in-flight, non-transferred arc pilot plasma plant with a capacity of 100 kg/h and which consists of three 150 kW DC plasma torches, is described. The optimization of the plant, which includes the use of different zircon concentrates, the influence of particle size, feed rates, plasma gas, and energy utilization, is discussed.

The gas-based CO reduction of Panzhihua vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate from 1100°C- 1250°C was investigated in this paper. The reduction degree increased with increasing temperature and increasing reduction time. At a temperature of 1250°C and a reduction time of 20 minutes, the metallisation degree reached 92%. The iron-titanium oxide phase transformation during reduction process was Fe2.75Ti0.25O5→Fe2.5Ti0.5O4→FeTiO3→FeTi2O5 according to the X-ray diffraction analysis. The SEM and map scan by energy spectrum of results of reduced samples at different temperatures indicated that the metallic iron particle size increased gradually as the reduction temperature increased. "SynopsisFluorine – in the form of hydrofluoric acid, anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, elemental gaseous fluorine, fluoropolymers, volatile inorganic fluorides, and more – has played, and still plays, a major role in the nuclear industry. In order to enrich uranium, the metal has to be in the gaseous state. While more exotic methods are known, the standard and most cost-competitive way of achieving this is by means of uranium hexafluoride (UF6). This compound sublimates at low temperatures, and the vapour is enriched using centrifugal processes. The industrial preparation of uranium hexafluoride requires both elemental fluorine gas and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF). HF is prepared by the reaction of sulphuric acid with fluorspar (CaF2). Fluorine gas in turn is prepared by the electrolysis of HF. Yellowcake is first converted to uranium tetrafluoride (UF4), using HF, after which the compound is treated with fluorine to yield UF6. After enrichment, the UF6 is reduced to UO2 for use in fuel elements in pellet form.South Africa has the largest reserves of fluorspar internationally, and is the third largest producer after Mexico and China. Fluorine technology has many associated difficulties, because of the reactivity of fluorine and the toxicity of HF. The main barriers to entry into the fluorochemical industry are thus the abilities to produce both HF and F2. Both these substances are produced locally, at the industrial scale, at Pelchem SOC Ltd. Should South Africa contemplate developing its own nuclear fuel cycle as part of the awaited new-build nuclear project, it will be imperative to leverage the existing skills with respect to fluorine technology, resident at both Pelchem and Necsa, for this purpose. This paper summarizes the fluorochemical skills developed locally over the past several decades, and suggests strategies for maintaining the technology base and developing it for the next generation of scientists and engineers.IntroductionFluorine chemistry has always had a very close relationship with the nuclear industry. Although the first mention of fluorspar was recorded in the sixteenth century, and the fundamentals had been well-developed by the Second World War, it was only during the Manhattan Project (Banks et al., 1994), when almost unlimited funds were made available for the large-scale industrialization of fluorine and related compounds, that the technology took off. Expertise in both the chemistry and the engineering aspects of fluorine is essential for the design and running of several of the unit processes in the nuclear fuel cycle."

"SynopsisSlime coating is one of the most common ways for serpentines to contaminate metallic mineral concentrates during traditional flotation of coarse sulphide particles. This could pose quite a complicated and challenging problem in the case of some types of low-grade and finely disseminated Cu-Ni ores bearing high serpentine contents. This is the case for the copper and nickel sulphides from the Yunnan Mine, China. Previous batch flotation tests of this ore resulted in satisfactory recoveries of 86.92% Cu, 54.92% Ni, and 74.73% Pt+Pd, and concentrate grades of 4.02% Cu, 3.24% Ni, and 76.61 g/t Pt+Pd. However, the MgO content in these concentrates was more than 19%. In the current study, microflotation tests and settling rate tests were introduced to investigate the effects of a combination of strong collectors (a 2:1 weight ratio of butyl xanthate and butyl ammonium dithophosphate) on entrainment of serpentines in metallic mineral concentrate, as well as visual observations of the concentrates in suspension using still photography. All test results indicated the presence of serpentines entrapped in the hydrophobic flocs that resulted from these collectors, even with the use of effective gangue depressants. These strong collectors are used to flocculate the ultra-fine sulphides by forming loose and ‘fluffy’ hydrophobic flocs. However, these hydrophobic flocs may also be able to load or entrap some serpentine slimes into the concentrate, and this entrained serpentine could be harder to remove by using depressants or intensified conditioning than serpentine slime coating on the particle surfaces.IntroductionSerpentine minerals, which have the generalized composition (Mg,Fe)3Si2O5(OH)4, can be easy to crush and grind due to their convoluted and bent layered structures. These serpentines can hinder the enrichment of some metallic minerals and dilute their concentrates by entrainment during flotation. The resulting high pulp viscosities, slime coatings, and high content of dissolved ions adversely affect the flotation recoveries of copper and nickel sulphides, and high levels of MgO entrained in the concentrates lead to heavy penalties from smelters. Since the quality of nickel flotation concentrate depends heavily on its MgO content (generally less than 6–7% for No.1 or 2 grade nickel concentrate according to the standard requirement from National Nonferrous Industry), reducing the entrainment of serpentine during flotation is becoming more and more pressing. Previous research has focused on the collectors and depressants that are commonly used in copper-nickel flotation, as well as their interaction mechanisms."

"One of the main challenges in the numerical modelling of ground support in underground excavations is to reproduce the performance of the sequential installation of the reinforcement while capturing the rock mass behaviour of an advancing face in 3D. The 3D modelling approaches used to simulate the progressive advance of excavations are mostly continuum and often cannot reproduce the rock mass failure mechanisms. The 3D discrete element method (DEM) can better reproduce structurally controlled rock mass failure mechanisms and can explicitly represent the reinforcement elements. This paper builds on previous work that reproduced the structurally controlled squeezing conditions in an underground hard-rock mine using 3D DEM and the in situ behaviour of reinforcement under pull conditions. It addresses important issues on the way reinforcement is explicitly introduced in discrete element models. A pseudo-3D model is employed to overcome the computational restrictions and time limitations of a 3D modelling approach. The work focuses on the scaling of the material properties of the ground support elements when the thickness of the model is not equal to the out-of-plane spacing of reinforcement. It demonstrates the scaling methodology based on the type of the modelled reinforcement elements used and investigates the significance of this approach. The advantages and disadvantages of this approach with respect to 2D and 3D methods are discussed. The results are compared with field data and previous modelling work done at the mine. IntroductionNumerical models can provide significant insight into the anticipated behaviour of underground excavations. The modelling of ground support, however, is not a trivial exercise. An effective representation of ground support in underground excavations should capture the behaviour of both the rock mass and the support elements. When numerical models are used for design purposes, the complexity of the problem requires significant time and expertise (Sweby, Dight, and Potvin, 2016).At a laboratory scale, numerical models have successfully reproduced the results of laboratory tests on rockbolts by explicit modelling of the bolt, the borehole, and the grout. Chen and Li (2015) used a continuum FLAC3D (Itasca Consulting Group Inc., 2012) model to simulate the mechanical behaviour of D-bolts as observed experimentally. Grasselli (2005) used a 3D finite element code to model the behaviour of fully grouted rods and expandable bolts under shear."

The paper describes a CFD model developed for 76mm Dense Medium Cyclone (DMC) using Ansys Fluent Software to gain insights into the separation of particles according to their size and density. The simulation used in this paper includes the Reynolds stress model to predict the turbulence inside the cyclone body. An Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase CFD model was applied to model a number of physical aspects such as the separation of coal particles and the segregation of magnetite media solids. The experimental results generated in a laboratory scale DMC were used for the validation purpose and the predicted results of CFD have been validated for the flow splits of water, magnetite and coal. The simulation results obtained from the Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase model revealed that the prediction agreed with experimental results, and matched reasonably well in terms of the mass flow rates of water, magnetite and coal. Furthermore, the partition curve of the DMC when mapped for the separation of - 3.0+0.50 mm size also showed to be in agreement with the experimentally obtained curves. The gravity of cut (SG50), also predicted by the Eulerian-Eulerain multiphase CFD model, was found to be in the vicinity of observed experimental value of SG50. "SynopsisThe application of the attainable region (AR) technique to the analysis of ball milling is currently limited to batch data. This paper introduces the use of the technique to continuous milling.To this end, an industrial open milling circuit processing a platinum ore was surveyed. Samples were collected and later characterized by means of laboratory batch testing. On site, several milling parameters were varied systematically so as to collect data for modelling purposes. These paramters included ball filling, slurry concentration, and feed flow rate. After data analysis, a simulation model of the open milling circuit was developed under MODSIM®, a modular simulator for mineral processing operations. The mill was then simulated and the data generated was analysed within the AR framework.Initial findings reveal an opportunity to gain valuable insight by studying milling using the AR technique. From an exploratory perspective and inasmuch as this study is concerned, feed flow rate, ball size, and ball filling were identified as being pivotal for the optimization of open ballmilling circuits. Mill speed, on the other hand, had only a limited effect on the production of particles in the size range -75 +10 µm.IntroductionGlasser and Hildebrandt (1997) propounded the attainable region (AR) as a technique for the analysis of chemical engineering reactor systems. Results have since been produced and tested on both the laboratory and pilot scales. The method results in a graphical description of chemical reactions by considering the fundamental processes taking place in the system, rather than the equipment. From the plotted graphs, the process and the reactors can be synthesized optimally into a flow sheet.The use of the AR method still has a long way to go as far as mineral processing is concerned. For instance, several articles have reported the application of the AR technique to ball milling: Khumalo et al. (2006, 2007, 2008); Khumalo (2007); Metzger et al. (2009, 2012); Metzger (2011); Katubilwa et al. (2011); Hlabangana et al. (2012). Their main shortcoming has been the exclusive use of laboratory batch grinding data.To address this deficiency, Mulenga and Chimwani (2013) proposed a way by which the technique could be extended to continuous milling. In effect, the batch milling characteristics of a platinum-bearing ore (Chimwani et al., 2013) were used and scaled up to an open milling circuit. Then, with simplifying assumptions, an attempt was made to optimize the residence time of particles inside the mill. Later, Chimwani et al. (2014a) presented some optimization examples involving various milling parameters. The sequence of published articles then paved the way for the study of industrial milling systems with the AR methodology."

The paper points out that bord-and-pillar mining is the most important method of coal extraction in South African underground coal mines, and advocates that pillar design procedures should be refined to make more rational allowance for the differences in strength properties between various coal seams and roof and floor strata. However, any deviations from well-established design procedures must be based on sound engineering principles and reliable data on the strength properties of the seams and strata concerned. Recent information indicates that practices for the protection of surface structures against underground mining should be revised.

Geological, tectonic, geochemical and geophysical data were utilized for the mineral resource assessment of the Biga Peninsula in NW Turkey. During the deductive phase of the project multivariate statistical methods were applied to accentuate characteristic parameters which sufficiently describe the different types of Pb - Zn mineralization. The parameters most likely to be indicative of mineral occurrences were determined. In the following prognostic phase these parameters were further statistically treated to determine favourability indexes for the occurrence of a deposit within each cell of the training area. Preliminary results of probabilistic, univariate and multivariate methods are presented.

Microseismic monitoring of mining areas is a developing technique, described here for the Belvedere Spinello Mine, southern Italy, where dissolution cavities in the mining area have proved problematic. The preliminary condition for locating seismic impulses has been found to be a reliable seismic ground model. Ground signals are continuously recorded by means of data from piezometric wells, for sinkhole data, and linked gephones, for microseismic data. A computer system has been implemented to collect, analyse and interpret the incoming signals consequently, identification and classification of hypocentres of activity is facilitated, with advantages in terms of safety, preventing harmful side-effects, including rock bursts, and for environmental conservation.

Changes in the pattern of computer systems for mine planning and geologic evaluation are occurring as a consequence of the introduction of 3-D high performance graphics terminals. The VULCAN system is described and an outline of its functionality is discussed. Increasingly, the integration of both database systems and graphics and databases will occur, allowing a greater degree of information access to mine operators. The system covers areas of database, drillhole graphics, mine design and layout, surface and solid modelling as well as reserve inventory generation. The design of the software is such that it is fairly commodity-independent and entirely menu-driven, to enable non computer-trained personnel easily to access the system.

Stochastic methods are normally invoked / used to assist with the understanding of risks, when there is uncertainty around a particular outcome. Uncertainty implies that there is a risk that the desired outcome will not be realized. Stochastics and probability theory has long held out the promise to answering this need, but has often been maligned because of its misuse. This paper takes a critical look need for Monte Carlo simulation to project risk evaluation and highlights what is considered to be the fundamental issues that should be thoughtfully considered to avoid the abuse of this technique. The upside of avoiding the abuse of this technique will be the wider acceptance by practitioners that it is a credible technique to quantify this important aspect of valuation.

A new graphical method termed the ?Design Curve Diagram? (DCD) has been developed to analyse non-Newtonian pipe flow data by relating the plastic Karman number to the plastic Reynolds number. Since the plastic Karman number is directly proportional to the pressure loss gradient and the plastic Reynolds number is directly proportional to the velocity, the DCD is essentially a non-dimensional pipe flow curve. This makes the DCD conceptually easier than the commonly used Hedström-Moody diagram. While, the DCD was developed for the analysis of yield plastic fluids (e.g., Bingham plastics), it is equally applicable to Newtonian fluids.

n order to validate the borehole analysis valuation procedure commonly used in the South African gold mining industry, a simulated orebody was used to create borehole values which would serve as data for the procedure. After confirming the distribution, calculating the variance size of area relationship, estimating the block variance, and calculating a profit measurement for each set, comparisons were made to the known population parameters. Results show only one overall bias (in the estimation of the lognormal third parameter), which is carried throughout the analysis. The remainder of the analysis is unbiased, validating the procedure.

An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction - primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

This paper deals with the reticulation of deslimed tailings from surface to the stope face underground. Reference is made to the experience gained at the pilot plants operating on four of the gold mines administered by Gold Fields of South Africa, as well as at the full-scale system at East Driefontein which was commissioned recently. Mine-wide backfill systems are currently being installed on five other mines administered by Gold Fields. These six full-scale systems are capable of handling more than 270 000 tons of backfill solids per month. The type of reticulation system chosen, the selection of flowrates and the composition of the slurry, as well as the selection of the appropriate pipes and ancillary equipment are discussed. Both theoretical and practical aspects are taken into consideration. Other aspects covered include the design of underground storage dams and communication systems.
