Traditional pit optimization techniques cannot take account of the requirement to blend ore in order to produce a saleable product, as is the case for iron ore, coal, limestone and other industrial minerals. Various techniques are proposed to overcome the deficiencies, many of which have been tested. The techniques in general involve the combined application of pit optimization and blend optimization techniques.

During developing the Ingulska mine at the Mi-churinske uranium deposit in the central part of Ukraine the radioactive rock dumps have been piled. A height of dumps reaches to 15-25m. They occupy a large territory and can be a source of covering with radioactive dust the area around the Ingulska mine. Uranium content exceeds 0,01% in all dump rocks samples while in the dust fraction samples it ranges from 0,01 to 0,06%. Uranium content in road dust at the dump?s foot reaches 0,137%. A new (for Ukraine) method of f-radiography of tree and bush leaves sampled at the territory about 100km2 has been used. It is based on fission of 235U nucleuses due to heat neutron influence in a nuclear reactor and on following study of the Lausan films with tracks drawn by the fractures of these nucleuses. Uranium content of the dif-fusion-disseminated dust type is (0.9-22.2)?10-6% while in the individual particles it can be considered much more because of burned holes in Lavsan above them. The dust content with uranium in Kirovograd reaches to 20-50 part/cm2 while near the dumps it ranges from 100 part/cm2 to 300 part/cm2 in the radius of 1,5-2km from the Ingulska mine.

The most common method of determining airflow employed by mine ventilation engineers is the product of i) the average air velocity as measured by a vane anemometer and stopwatch through a continuous traversing technique, with ii) the cross-sectional area of the roadway. This method requires the vane anemometer to accumulate the total flow over the duration of the traverse. Historically, this has been facilitated by a mechanical analog instrument that has either a counter or set of dials that display the flow. Common instruments of this type are Airflow Development's AM5000, Davis's, or Taylor's Biram type anemometer. The AM5000 is widely used in the Canadian mining industry but is no longer available. Therefore, regulatory authorities have seen fit to evaluate presently available commercial instruments to replace the AM5000. This paper describes an instrument evaluation contracted by the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada which regulates the uranium industry. Over the last two decades there have been numerous advances in the development of electronic air velocity meters. Currently available units have the following features: a) battery operation; b) are compact and can be hand-held; c) employ LCD's, and microelectronic circuitry; and d) provide a time integration for the duration of a traverse. These features make such instruments a possible replacement to the analog units and stopwatch determinations. This paper details five of the new generation of vane anemometers plus a vortex air meter, and it explores their limitations in comparison to analog units. Specific consideration is given to linear response, the effects of yaw, traversing speeds and ergonomics relating to both handling and use. The paper concludes with some features that are attractive and should be considered when purchasing a new anemometer.

The Cross City Tunnel comprises 2km of a new underground traffic route in Sydney, Australia. The route is very complex, involving some six separate tunnels and three underground Y-junctions. For almost 200m the six tunnels run parallel at different level sunder William Street, Sydney. Almost all of the route runs adjacent to the City Business District of Sydney and adjacent to or below many major buildings and services. The planning and design of this project is described. The geometric arrangement is achieved with a strong dependence on 3D road design packages. Road alignment constraints include land acquisition and proximity to existing tunnels and basements as well as maintaining separation from the other tunnels in the scheme. Geotechnical and hydrogeological studies are described. Findings discussed include the high horizontal stress field in the Sydney area and investigation of incised palaeochannels on the route. Methods of design for the tunnels and Y-junctions are described, as well as methods of settlement prediction for the buildings and services. The latter includes the settlement assessment for more than 200 buildings, many in excess of 20 storeys, as well as services including all of the city railway lines in Sydney.

I met Austin Taylor in Vancouver on my way home from my first Pioneer examination. He asked me to examine the unsuccessful old Lorne mine, adjoining and west of the Pioneer. I had no idea that this meeting would lead to one of the outstanding successes and pleasant associations of my career. I knew nothing of Taylor, except that Gen. McRae and associates said that he had been engaged in lumbering and was interested in an oil and gasoline marketing company called Home Oil. But even if the Lorne examination would be only a small one, in the depths of the Depression in 1931, I was glad to have a chance to look at another gold property, so I agreed to visit the Lorne early in August. The start of the trip was not auspicious. I had been working hard on an unproductive study, and was greatly worried by my father's hopeless illness with tuberculosis. To get a little rest on my way north I had arranged to go from Seattle to Vancouver on the night boat that connected with my train. To my surprise, Bill Boultbee, an associate of Taylor, met me at the train in Seattle at 9:30. He said he would drive me to Vancouver, arriving at one In the morning. I was so tired that I begged off and let him take the drive alone Boultbee was most understanding and friendly, but I knew how I would have felt if I had been kind enough to take the long drive to help a stranger and then had been forced to make the return midnight drive alone. I was lucky they did not call off the examination at once. I got a good sleep on the Vancouver boat and Austin Taylor met me at the Hotel Vancouver for breakfast. After a brief talk he took me to the small steamer that made the 4-hr sail up Howe Sound to the village of Squamish. This was the end of the Province-owned Pacific Great Eastern Railway that was eventually to be a shortcut from Vancouver to the Canadian National main line at Prince George. Because

Feldspars have major uses in glass manufacture and in ceramic products. About 6 million metric tons (6.6 million short tons) are used annually. Feldspars are desirable because of their high aluminum and alkali contents. Na feldspars are favored for glass, while K feldspar is often preferred in the pottery and tile industries. Economic deposits occur in a variety of geological environments. Most are in granites or granite-like bodies, pegmatites being a common source worldwide. Alkali granites, particularly those some- times called alaskites, are mined directly as a source of feldspar and associated minerals. Some other igneous bodies, such as aplites, rhyolites, and partly altered granites (for example china stone) provide alternative feldspar-rich products. Nepheline syenites and phonolites are other sources of feldspar and contain higher amounts of alkalis. Feldspar-rich (arkosic) sediments derived from the weathering of pegmatites and granites are widely extracted and processed for use in ceramics. The present study reviewed the various sources of feldspars throughout the world. Data on the quality of products has been taken from literature, and samples have been obtained from a large number of producers. The mineralogy and chemistry of the samples has been determined and, as far as possible, have been related to the geology of the source area. Feldspar products show a wide range of chemical and mineralogical compositions. Some are pure Na feldspar (albite), others are made up entirely of K feldspar (microline and orthoclase), but many are mixtures of Na and K feldspars. Significant quantities of quartz are often present, and many products contain mica and kaolinite. Fe203 con- tents are very low, typically less than 0.1 percent. Detailed mineralogical studies show that four groups of products can be recognized on the basis of feldspar mineralogy. These are albite, albite with microcline, microcline with orthoclase, and orthoclase with albite. Products containing microcline and orthoclase together are mostly sedimentary in origin. Those with albite only, or albite with microcline have a pegmatitic or granite origin. Those containing orthoclase as the dominant K feldspar are derived from aplites or rhyolites. There does not appear to be any relationship between the feldspar mineralogy and the quartz content. Peraluminous S- type granites and pelite-dominated high-grade metamorphic rocks, in which there is a significant volatile component, are likely to be the most important feldspar sources. Partial kaolinization of feldspar-containing rocks often improves minability, decreases crushing costs, reduces iron content, and increases the K2O/Na2O ratio.

Perimeter mining is a special form of very productive partial extraction method practiced at some mines in the United States. In the Illinois Basin mines where all major coal seams have weak underclay in the immediate floor, experience shows that any long-term ground control issues will arise due to floor failures rather than instability of the coal pillar itself. While there is a significant amount of work done on floor stability associated with regular pillars, no work has been done so far on the stability of perimeter pillars. This paper reports the results of a comprehensive study that was conducted for the first time on floor stability during perimeter mining in the Illinois Basin mines. A special plate template, which mimicked a common perimeter pillar configuration was created to conduct in-situ bearing capacity tests at five mines in three states of the Basin. Additionally, because of the complex shape of pillars created in perimeter mining that defies any closed-form solution, floor bearing capacity was studied using three-dimensional nonlinear numerical modeling. Based on these in-situ and numerical studies, some guidelines are provided for perimeter pillar stability analysis.

Developing a laboratory procedure for the determination of coal-seam compressive strength has been a subject of discussion for many decades, and the reliability of laboratory determinations is often the subject of debate. A coal seam’s characteristics, the method of sample collection, the specimen preparation method and the testing procedure can often result in drastic variations in the test results. In this paper, the development of a laboratory testing procedure for the determination of coal-seam compressive strength is presented. Two samples that were collected from different coal seams were tested in this study. First, the inherent characteristics, i.e., coal structure. Hardgrove grindability index (HGI), Slake durability index, proximate analysis and mechanical properties (Young's modules and Poisson's ratio), of each coal were determined. The results were used to categorize the coal scams in terms of the characteristics liable to produce variable strength data in typical laboratory tests. Second, two commonly used laboratory specimen shapes, cylindrical and cubical, were tested to determine which shape produced the most reproducible strength values. Third, four loading rates within the static testing range, i.e., 0.007, 0.07, 0.34 and 0.7 MPa/s (1.0, 10, 50 and 100 psi/sec), were used to determine the ideal loading rate. Finally, the number of test samples required to produce strength data within the acceptable standard deviation, considering coal seam characteristics, were established. Background Laboratory testing of coal specimens for the determination of seam compressive strength has been a subject of discussion since the early 1900s. Many researchers have tested coal specimens to estimate coal-seam compressive strength for use in pillar design to insure the safe operation of [ ] mines (Unrug et al., 1986; and Hirt et al.. 1992). Yet, there is a lack of a universal procedure, and, no matter which approach is used, it becomes the subject of intensive debate. A great deal of work has been performed on the subject, and there is much information available in the literature. Some of this work concerns quantifying the influence of specimen shape and size on compressive strength (Bieniawski. 1968: Barron et al.. 1992: Khair and Xu 1994; and Khair 1994). As indicted in the literature, coal is a heterogeneous material, consisting of discontinuities such as cleats and bedding planes, which are likely to produce variable strength results (Holland, 1964; Unrug et al., 1986). Our study focuses on the geology, hydrology, and geochemistry of a variety of molybdenum (Mo) porphyry systems. The systems are either high fluorine, granite, Climax-type, systems (e.g. Mount Emmons/Redwell Mo deposit, Colorado and Questa Mo deposit, New Mexico) or low fluorine granodiorite systems (e.g. Buckingham Stockwork Mo deposit, Battle Mountain, Nevada and Cannivan Gulch Mo deposit, Montana). The water quality of streams, natural springs, mine discharge, and ground water from drill holes were assessed in the region of these deposits. The ultimate goal of our study is to understand the environ-mental behavior of these Mo porphyry systems in the context of geologic setting, hydrologic regime, and climate.

BRUCE CAVENDER, BHP Copper: Having worked in both places, I'd like to address the issue of the plant versus the corporate office. One thing to keep in mind is that we are all very engaged with the technical elegance of a lot of the work we do. There's some tremendous technical expertise in the plant. But remember, the guys in the corporate office are only thinking in one denomination, and that's dollars. So we'll see something like a spill, and for us it's a problem. At the end of the day, what the corporation cares about is the financial impact. So we've got to be careful to couch our solutions in dollar terms. JIM ARNOLD: Rebuttal? [laughter] DOUG HALBE: Are you going to rebut this one, Andy? ANDY CARTER, Oxidor Gold Corporation: No, I don't think so. I'm not up to it. I'd just like to address a question both to our panel and the floor. Those of us who've been in this industry any length of time have seen these same mistakes made over and over again. Wherever you go, year after year, plant after plant, you see the same problems. I guarantee you, Doug, that if we have a similar conference down the road, you're going to see the same thing. My question to the panel and to the floor is what is it about our industry that stops us from learning from our mistakes? What characteristic is it that prevents us from learning and makes us repeat the same mistakes over and over again? DOUG HALBE: That's a great question. Someone said in a meeting 10 years ago that if the people who design plants designed airplanes, the planes would be falling out of the air all the time. GARY SIMMONS, Newmont Gold Company: I've got an answer to your question as to why many plants are poorly designed. It's that the minute anybody demonstrates any sort of competence in plant design, they're promoted to a higher-paying job, and the talent pool is left with people of lesser experience. Just think about it: The people who have the experience and have demonstrated it more than once have moved up. JIM ARNOLD: I think that there's another reason, too. Surface mining, from ore extraction to processing, requires many types of equipment to obtain the final product. Mine equipment often includes shovels, drills and haul trucks. Ore processing equipment, including plants, mills and concentrators, are also part of surface mining operations. Surface mining operations emphasize production. Production is where the bills are paid and fortunes are made. However, there must be support to keep the equipment operational. To most production people, equipment maintenance is a necessary evil. Maintenance is not glamorous work. It is often neglected when praise is being passed around. It is easy to recognize higher production, greater capacities, faster cycle times or more loads hauled. But who cares if an engine is replaced in 12 hours instead of 48? The answer is, everyone should - from the hourly miner to the mine manager. Surface mining equipment needs constant maintenance work. It must be lubricated, components replaced, electrical problems repaired and other problems addressed. Repair work for any surface equipment takes time away from production. It costs money. Maintenance costs cannot be avoided. However, they can be minimized. Minewide communication should include operations cooperating with maintenance. Traditionally, operations resist surrendering equipment to maintenance if it can continue to produce. The rationale is, every load that can be hauled today is money in the bank. If the unit is taken down, the money is lost. This thinking is prevalent in many surface mining areas, including the mill. "Not on my shift," the operator thinks. "Let the next crew worry about it. The problem with this thinking is in probability and statistics. The longer equipment goes without maintenance work, the higher the probability of equipment failure. When the failure does occur, it is certain to cause the equipment to remain down longer than if the maintenance department had been allowed to take it down. Many mining operations have closed early in their lives because of poor maintenance practices. This has become the industry standard because substandard levels of performance are acceptable. Management believes it gets five to six hours of work from maintenance people during an eight-hour shift. Actually, the industry average is less than two hours of work per shift. Real productivity levels of less than one hour are not unusual. There are few exceptions. However, a daily work schedule (DWS) will increase productivity at many properties by 50% to 100%. A 200% improvement is not unusual. The DWS will work. Maintenance people are among the most intelligent and motivated people on the property. They deserve the chance to be productive. [ ] In preparing a DWS, management needs to understand two productivity principles - the productivity spread and the real maintenance workday.

On my arrival in New York after the Russian examinations John D. Ryan, president of Anaconda, asked me what my plans were. I told him I wanted to be useful somehow in the World War that we had entered while I was away, but I did not know how. Ryan and Thayer told me that the new American Air Corps was gathering a group of executives, most of them young, to go to France as Army officers to help with the industrial side of our aviation activities. This would include construction of military airports, maintenance, and supply for our rapidly growing Air Corps. They thought I might be accepted in this group of about 30. It seemed to be just what I wanted, and I put in my application at once. My application was accepted about three weeks later and I was told to come to Washington to take physical and other tests and to meet others of the group. I liked them. They were a cross section of competent American manufacturers, bankers, automobile executives, and merchants. I was the only miner. I had many discussions in the days in Washington with members of our organization and others I knew who were going into war service. Attitudes were very different from those 55 years later. There was no discussion as to whether war was right or wrong. We were in it and must do all we could to help. At the same time there was a holdover from the days when, at least for the elite, war was high adventure. Even the most high-minded did not then realize that war is a horrible form of wholesale murder and, in 1917, it would have been treason to suggest this. I had two weeks before our industrial group was to start work which gave me time for a hurried trip to Berkeley where Dorothy and I announced our engagement.

I was very glad to see an article on alkali-silica reactivity of concrete aggregate in Mining Engineering. It is a topic that should be reexamined every 45 or 50 years. The last paper (that I am aware of) that examined this topic in Mining Engineering was Rexford (1950), who, at the time, was chief of the Petrography Section, South Pacific Division Laboratory, Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles, CA. The paper was presented at the AIME meeting in Los Angeles in October 1948. Professor Leming's discussion generally reflects the current state-of-the-art; but it provides no references for more detailed information. I wrote a paper titled "How to avoid excessive expansion of concrete due to alkali-aggregate reaction," which was included in the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reactions in Hydroelectric Plants and Dams (Mather, 1995). In it, I emphasized that it was the hydroxide ion (not the alkali ion) that caused the pore fluid in the concrete to dissolve reactive silica, producing alkali-silica gel capable of taking up water, thereby, causing swelling and rupturing of the concrete. Excessive expansion will not occur unless there is a sufficient amount of potentially expansive alkali-silica reaction product and water. However, this will not occur unless there is a sufficient quantity of reactive aggregate and unless there is a mechanism by which the pH of the pore fluid can get well above the normal value of about 12.6. In many cases it is sufficient that the cementitious medium not only contains portland cement but also contains ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) or a pozzolan such as fly ash, silica fume, metakaolin, volcanic glass or calcined shale - any of which may have been included for economic reasons. If, however, the person selecting the ingredients for concrete knows that the aggregate is reactive (with no alternate nonreactive aggregate available) and if the person knows that the only available portland cement has a high alkali content (i.e., more than 0.6% Na2O.; Na2e = % Na20 + 0.658 x % K20), then it becomes irresponsible not to establish what reasonable precaution one should take. Professor Leming suggests using one of the following: 30% Class F fly ash, 50% GGBFS or 7% to 10% silica fume. My view is that one should prepare test specimens with the cement and aggregate to be used and then expose these both with and without at least two dosages of each of the various alternative materials (slag, pozzolan and lithium salts), so that the required dosage. to control the expansion is established. Then, economic considerations can dictate the final selection. I would point out to the author that GGBFS is not a pozzolan and is not an admixture, but, rather, it is a latent hydraulic cement. An admixture is, by definition, a material other than hydraulic cement. I commend him for suggesting that aggregate producers should become more active in knowing about the reactivity of their products and the precautions needed to permit those products to be safely used in concrete.

In the period 1982-1992, world trade has increased in real terms about 65% (Anon., 1992b). The nominal value of this trade in the early 1990s is approximately $5 trillion. In 1970, mineral commodities constituted approximately 20% of the value of world trade. By 1980, despite rising petroleum prices, mineral commodities made up about 18% of the total value of world trade, with crude oil amounting to 16% and other minerals the remaining 2%. By 1987, the major worldwide economic slowdown and falling oil prices meant that minerals constituted only about 10% of the total value of world trade, or about $500 billion in 1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). The importance of minerals in world trade since 1987 has remained at about these levels. Approximately 40% of world mineral commodity production is traded internationally. Some economists predict that minerals and other commodities are likely to continue to decline in relative importance in terms of the value of world economic output, as well as world trade, into the foreseeable future (Thurow, 1992). This projected decline in commodity demand may also be related to much slower global economic growth over the next decade (Alperovitz, 1992). Industrial minerals and rocks constituted roughly 2.5% of total mineral commodity exports in the late 1980s, but their relative importance as a portion of mineral commodity exports nearly doubled in the decade 1977-1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). Industrial minerals constitute the most rapidly growing share of total mineral commodity exports. In addition, price declines among industrial minerals were uncommon in the decade 1977-1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). While prices of sulfur and most of the fertilizer minerals have seen some erosion and slow growth in markets in the period 1987-1992, other industrial minerals have increased in both value and share of the export market (USBM, 1992). The place of industrial minerals in world trade becomes even more significant when one looks at shipments of chemical fertilizers and basic chemicals that are counted as manufactured products rather than industrial mineral commodities. The United States is the major world producer of industrial mineral commodities and products made from these nonmetallic minerals and rocks. The former Soviet Union, now The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and China have very significant deposits of industrial minerals. Japan exports significant quantities of cement. The US, CIS, and Morocco export large amounts of phosphate rock. Canada and Germany export substantial amounts of potash. Sulfur from Poland, industrial diamonds from South Africa, Zaire, and Brazil, and fluorspar from Mexico are all important exports.

Unsaturated flow and solute transport were studied in three large columns measuring 1.5 m diameter x 2 m height, loaded with up to 3.7 t of oxidised waste rock, which was excavated from the Stratmat pile at Heath Steele Division, Noranda Inc. and contained elevated concentrations of zinc in the pore water. The bottom of each column was partitioned into 37 squares, each of which was drained independently. Following rain simulations at the top of the rock bed, the drainage in each drain port was monitored for volume and physicochemical parameters at pre-determined intervals. This paper describes some of the observations resulting from the experiments. The main conclusion of the study is that unsaturated flows in waste rock are heterogeneous, and flow channelling is ubiquitous. The results imply that the transport of solutes from oxidised waste rock to its toe drainage is subject to various controlling mechanisms, including geochemical equilibrium control and successive pore water dilution control.

Mine ventilation has been evolving as a separate field of study since the middle of the nineteenth century, and some practitioners might assert that mine ventilation has come of age as a discrete field in the last decade or two. Certainly the extensive literature now available on many facets of the subject, international congresses, the phenomenal upsurge of interest in mine ventilation in the United States of America since the passage of the 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, and the existence of a virile mine ventilation society in South Africa with its own monthly journal all point in this general direction; on the other hand the lack of a rational design philosophy for ventilating mines suggests that mine ventilation may still be on the threshold of maturity. To generalise, many mines are still ventilated simply to comply with arbitrary statutory regulations, or with some ill- defined notion of reducing the risk of injury associated with the atmospheric environment in mines. Hazards in this category include oxygen deficiency, toxic gases and particulates, pathogenic gases and aerosols, explosive gases and dusts, and extreme climatic conditions. Although many mines are ventilated to abate the risk of a specific injury, there is inevitably a spectrum of latent and patent atmospheric hazards in every underground mine. The writer (Martinson, 1976) has previously drawn attention to the dearth of material on mine ventilation design in textbooks and technical journals, and to the overly simplistic approach sometimes adopted in the limited work published on the subject. The available material undoubtedly contains useful technical data and persuasive views, but seemingly could not be used to demonstrate the rational engineering approach to mine ventilation design advocated in the present paper. The range of papers presented at the 1975 and 1979 Congresses, and the diverse interests and affiliations of delegates, emphasize the multidisciplinary nature of mine ventilation. Easily recognisable topics include: Fluid mechanics Thermodynamics Heat transfer Flames and combustion Aerosol physics Radiation physics Geophysics and geomechanics Occupational diseases Epidemiology Industrial physiology Despite these heterogeneous connections there can be little doubt that mine ventilation is fundamentally an engineering field and not an off-shoot of some other branch of applied science. The distinction is important because mine ventilation has essentially developed as a form of ad hoc trouble- shooting, and in the process mining engineers have relied extensively on the assistance of experts drawn from other fields. Thus historically there has been limited scope for the application of rational design techniques, and personnel enlisted from scientific disciplines may not have had any previous experience in the intricacies of engineering design.

Geotechnical theory is reasonably well developed to evaluate the stability of rock slopes for surface mining projects. It is recognized widely that structural geology, groundwater pressures and seepage, and blasting are key factors that influence the stability of such slopes. However, our capabilities to model the structural geology, to determine rock strength along discontinuities and to model groundwater pressures and profiles are still very approximate. Plus, practical experience of the rock mechanics engineer is one of the most important inputs to the design of open pit mine slopes. To emphasize the use of practical experience, a number of case examples are reviewed here to illustrate key factors that must be evaluated. These case examples comprise a continuation of other examples presented in the Jackling lecture to the SME in 1986 by the author (Brawner, 1986). Example no. 1 In situations where the orientation of geologic discontinuities will not influence rock slope stability, extremely steep slopes can be developed, providing blasting and groundwater are controlled adequately. An excellent example of this condition is the Republic Pit of Cleveland Cliffs in Michigan. The rock slope in Fig. 1 isover400fthigh with a face angle of approximately 80". The rock is hard and massive, and blasting was carefully controlled. The original design of this slope was at45", a standard design angle at that time. The competency of the rock and the lack of critical geologic structure subsequently was recognized, and the much steeper slope angle was developed successfully. The rock proved to be so competent and the slope sufficiently stable that an underground crusher station was developed with entrance and exit tunnels excavated at the toe of the steep wall.

Steel mesh has been used successfully for many years to control friable roof conditions and prevent loose roof and rib material from caving into the roadway. Despite its extensive use, the installation of steel mesh is difficult to automate and many other products have been evaluated as an alternative for skin control. Ideally, the properties of these new products should be similar or better than those of the steel mesh. In particular, development of a strong and resistant shell that minimizes movement along the fractured rock and coal surfaces between the bolt anchors is recommended. A strong surface adhesion and the strength of a reinforced polymer skin can provide the necessary toughening mechanism required to enhance roadway surface support by forming a reinforced polymer/rock surface layer. Most of the Thin Spray-on Liners (TSL) evaluated in the mines are weak with slow curing times, and the plastic mesh currently used to support the coal ribs is relatively weak. Therefore, neither material can seriously compete with steel mesh. Currently, a new polymer product that cures in seconds and forms an instantaneous strata binder that surpasses the properties of steel mesh is under development at the University of Wollongong.

Grinding circuits employed in mineral processing operations are designed to produce feed materials for beneficiation steps such as flotation and magnetic separation, which are sufficiently fine to achieve good liberation of valuable minerals from gangue without over- grinding. In many respects, grinding is the most important unit operation in a mineral processing plant. If adequate liberation is not achieved during grinding, subsequent separation steps will yield low metallurgical recoveries and/or product grades. Grinding energy requirements and operating costs typically exceed 50% of the total expenditures of the entire plant. Because grinding is an inherently energy intensive process and grinding circuit capital and operating costs are high, it is essential that such circuits be run as efficiently as possible. In- creased efficiency in grinding usually translates to a decrease in the energy required to produce a metric ton (short ton) of product size material. It is generally accepted in the mineral industry that efficient grinding circuit performance can not be achieved without the use of some form of automatic control. This is true because all circuits are subject to random disturbances which, if left unchecked, will upset circuit performance and rob a plant of productivity. Such disturbances arise from a variety of sources including natural variations in ore characteristics (particularly hardness changes), uncontrolled water additions, feed-rate upsets, changes in crusher performance, and mechanical upsets such as blockages in pumps and classifiers. Many of these disturbances occur with a frequency which is too high for an operator to detect and react to efficiently. Disturbances which occur on a time scale of several minutes up to several hours can be effectively dealt with using automatic control.

INTRODUCTION This method is a variation of cut-and-fill mining where either the wall rock or the vein is too unconsolidated to permit safe mining by conventional cut-and-fill methods. Basic development consists of driving a 2.4 x 2.7-m (8 x 9-ft) haulage heading laterally in the footwall side of the vein. Crosscuts are driven over to the vein at 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Then the vein, at each inter¬section, is mined out to a distance of about 9 m (30 ft ) above the track level. After the installation of an ore chute, scrams or intermediate drifts are driven in both directions along the vein. Mining then starts imme¬diately below the level bounding the upper limit of the stope. A cut varying between 3 and 4.2 m (10 and 14 ft) in depth and mined for a distance of 45.7 m (150 ft )along the strike is taken from the orepass in each direction (Fig. 1). In this mined-out void, the floor of the cut is equipped with 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) caps hitched into the wall with steel saddle hitches installed on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers. Double wood stringers, 152.4 x 152.4 mm (6 x 6 in.), are then installed on 1.2-m (4-ft) centers longitudinally down the length of the stope. Reinforc¬ing wire mesh is also placed, overlying each mat of timber. Directly above the stringers, stulls are installed from hanging wall to footwall to hold the timber in place during the sand-filling operation. Then a cement¬sand mixture in a ratio of about 1:10 weight is poured to a depth of about 2.4 m (8 ft). The entire cycle is then repeated down to the scram drift. Another variation of timbering is illustrated in Fig. 2. There is a vein width of approximately 5.5 m (18 ft) with the same unconsolidated ground conditions. The primary difference between handling this situation and the previously described undercut-and-fill method is that standard timbered sets are installed in each excavated stoping void rather than stulls. Once again the basic method is to work down the ore block from an upper timbered drift to a lower timbered drift. Cuts are taken from a timbered raise with a chute on the stope side. Each piece of ground excavated is essentially two sets high, 5.5 m (18 ft), by two sets wide, 5.5 m (18 ft), by the length of the cut along the strike of the vein. The timbered sets are 2.4 x 2.4 x 2.4 m (8 x 8 x 8 ft). The net result is, therefore, two sets of timber on a top floor separated by doubled-up 76-mm (3-in.) lagging from
