This paper presents the findings of a dust study in a typical fluorspar processing plant. The primary purpose of this study was to identify employees and occupational groups exposed to high dust levels and determine compliance with personnel regulations for regular and extended work shifts. The range of airborne concentration of respirable silica and fluoride compounds in specific areas and on personnel was determined. State of the art dust monitoring equipment and tracer gas techniques were used to measure dust concentration, pinpoint dust sources and map major airflow trends in the mill. Results of the survey indicated silica dust concentrations in excess of permissible limits being produced mainly by crushers at the south end of the building. Tracer gas releases and gas chromatographic analysis further showed that prevailing south to north air currents tended to carry and spread dust produced by the crushing operations throughout the process plant. Airborne concentrations of fluoride compounds measured during the study were always well below the prescribed threshold limit value (TLV) for the contaminant. Recommendations, including a mechanical exhaust ventilation system on crushers and transfer points, scheduled preventive maintenance on existing bar sprays and wearing of personal protective equipment were made which significantly improved the work environment. Further testing conducted after Installation of the dust extraction system revealed significant improvements in most areas of the mill.

In this paper, the results of a research study on airborne dust transport in a full scale simulated longwall face are presented. The simulated longwall face was set up in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct experiments under controlled conditions. The controlled parameters in the experiments were the dust dispersion rate, dust size distribution, density of the dust, air velocity, and the rate of travel of the dust generating source. The analyses of the experimental results on mass concentrations, particle size distributions, and real-time respirable dust concentrations are discussed. There are definite spatio-temporal trends between the location of the shearer, the concentration at any location in the face, and the dust generation rates. The size-consist and density characteristics of the source dust, the air velocity in the face, and the air leakage into the gobs all affect the concentration.

The Congress gold property, located near Goldbridge, B.C., is extremely refractory with most of the gold disseminated in fine- grained arsenopyrite. Metallurgical testwork conducted by Giant Bay Biotech Inc. indicated that biooxidation pretreatment was capable of increasing cyanide gold recovery from the ore to greater than 90%. To determine if the bioleach process could be successfully scaled up, a 225 cubic meter commercial size bioleach reactor was built and tested at the mine site in 1989. At that time the tank was the largest bioleach reactor ever operated. This paper discusses our experiences in operating the tank, summarizes some of the data obtained and describes the problems encountered.

I INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authorities (WMATA) rapid transit system (METRO), currently under construction, will have a total length of 98 miles. Forty-eight of these miles are underground and require either open cut excavations or tunnels. Despite stringent construction controls, it is inevitable that some ground settlement will occur adjacent to the deep open cut earth excavations and large diameter earth tunnels. It is therefore essential to underpin nearby important structures to prevent excessive differential settlements and Fig. 1 presents the METRO criteria for this underpinning. This paper describes the underpinning methods currently used on METRO and evaluates the effectiveness of each method. II DESCRIPTION OF SUBSURFACE STRATA The foundation materials in the Washington, D.C. area are extremely variable. Fig. 2 presents an idealized profile showing typical subsurface strata. The engineering properties of each stratum have been determined by extensive exploration and testing programs. Fill: Washington, D.C. fills consist of every variety of soil and rubble. They are not important to this study because no underpinning is founded on fill material. Two types of native sulfur deposits have been found in Lechuguilla Cave: thin late-stage crusts and massive early- formed deposits. Most, if not all, of the crusts appear to have formed by remobilization of native sulfur contained within gypsum and sulfur masses. The process is occurring today and is slowly converting the sulfur to gypsum. The absence of primary gypsum or reductants in the cave indicates that the early-formed massive sulfur deposits did not form by in-place reduction of sulfate, which is the process that formed the commercial sulfur deposits in the Delaware basin. Instead, it appears that H2S dissolved in basinal brines was oxidized by oxygen in near-surface ground waters in the cave. Fluid- inclusion data, which suggest the presence of both fresh water and saline water as the sulfur formed, support this interpretation. Although individual sulfur deposits in Lechuguilla Cave are no more than several tens of metric tons, the abundance of secondary gypsum (as much as 10 meters thick) indicates that native sulfur may once have been much more extensive.

Froth flotation is widely used for separating particulate materials from one another in aqueous media. The basis of this important separation process is to control the hydrophobicity of particles. However, it is difficult to predict the kinetics of flotation based on contact angle (?), which is a thermodynamic property. A solution to this difficulty would be to develop a relationship between ? and the gradient of the hydrophobic forces across the solid-liquid and bubble-liquid interfaces. Such information can be obtained using the surface force apparatus (SFA), the atomic force microscope (AFM), and the thin film balance (TFB). The present communication reviews the results of the measurements conducted using these methods, and offers a methodology for deriving a rate equation for bubble-particle interactions

Two different groups of mechanisms have been considered in the past to explain the effects of chemical additives on grinding. While one group of explanations is based upon alterations of surface and mechanical properties of the individual particles, the other group depends mainly on the arrangement of particles and their flow in suspensions. In this paper some of the past work on grinding aids is reviewed and attrition grinding of a commercially important ceramic material, zirconia (stabilized with yttria) with polyaaylic acid as grinding aid, is studied in order to determine the effect of the aid on the ground product itself. It was observed that even though polyaaylic acid did cause a drastic decrease in the viscosity of the pulp, it did not have any major effect on the grinding of zirconia at least up to 2000 ppm and only minor detrimental effect above it. Importantly, complexation by the polymer was found to cause extraction of yttrium into solution with possibly significant changes in the surface chemical composition of the product.

Eighty samples from Roman wall paintings from ancient Corinth were studied by means of optical and scanning electron microscopy coupled to an energy dispersive analyzer, X-ray diffraction and image analysis techniques. The goals of the study were the identification of the exact nature of the pigments and the technical features of paint application (binding medium, adherence to plaster, thickness of the pigment layer), which would provide evidence about the painting technique (fresco or secco). The main plaster is calcitic with secondary calcite as a cement binder to the primary calcite grains. All pigments, except Egyptian Blue, were naturally occurring ochres or pigment minerals, such as limonite, goethite, hematite for yellow, brown and red hues, cinnabar for red hues and celadonite for green color. The presence of specific elements such as Ni and Cr or minerals such as olivine, in the yellow, brown and red pigments, gave an indication about the provenance of the original pigments, which seems to be from Cyprus. The black color was represented using charcoal. It seems, finally, that for the pigment application the fresco technique was used, while secco is also apparent.

In many mines, dust-laden air from an entry being driven by a continuous miner will contaminate the intake air to the roof bolter operator and other downwind personnel. Through a US Bureau of Mines (USBM) contract, Foster-Miller Inc. has evaluated several control techniques to reduce the respirable dust exposures of downwind personnel. One fan and tubing technique consisted of bypassing the miner-generated dust directly to the section return. The results of the evaluation of this technique revealed that reductions in dust concentrations of 90% or more can be achieved at downwind roof bolter locations. A second method was to clean the dusty air from the upwind continuous miner by using a dust collector. The cleaned air was then supplied to the bolter through collapsible tubing. An underground evaluation showed reductions of 82% to 96% when the dust collector was operating. A third method was to reduce the quantity of dust contributed by the miner to the return airstream. A water-powered scrubber was installed over the throat area of the continuous miner. More than 1.18 m3/s (2500 cfm) of dusty air moved through five tubes with dust collection efficiency exceeding 75%. Underground evaluation results showed that return dust concentrations were reduced by about 60%. This paper discusses the ventilation and dust control techniques used for personnel downwind of the continuous miner.

This paper describes work carried out to obtain a heat balance in the B3 shaft longwall stope at Blyvooruitzicht gold mine. Recordings were made of the temperature of the air and chilled water entering and leaving the section during three periods, August 1 September 1977, November 1 December 1977 and March 1978. These recordings, together with numerous other measurements were used to determine the rate at which heat was being removed from the section by the various fluids flowing through the section. The rate at which heat was entering the section was then calculated, by considering each source in turn. These two sets of figures made it possible to draw up a heat balance, and also obviously gave vital information on the magnitudes of the various heat sources and on the methods used to remove heat. In general reasonable heat balances were obtained, the errors being in the range -6 per cent to +22 per cent.

This paper by Mr. McIvor is yet another contribution to the eternal controversy surrounding the benefits, or otherwise, of high circulating loads in closed circuit grinding. Throughout the paper it is difficult to establish whether the author is referring to effects relating to the mill, classifier, or to the overall circuit. Table 1 is put forward as indicating the advantage of operating at high circulating loads. From the two (it would be interesting to see more) product sizing points provided in each case, the conclusions to be drawn are that cases one and two have very similar size analyses. The third case, however, indicates a much flatter curve, that is to say, higher fines production and a very wide spread of size ranges. If the objective of this circuit is to provide a closely sized product with minimum overground slimes to the downstream process, then it would appear to be the less "efficient" by far. No data is given for product pulp densities either. The term "efficiency" should never be used without a careful and clear definition. In this case, "efficiency" is used to express an apparent percentage reduction in operating work index (Bond) from the measured "standard" at 250% circulating load operation. Three different refractory carbonaceous gold ores from the Carlin operation in northeastern Nevada were investigated to characterize the effect of passivation treatments on the nature of the carbonaceous material. The carbonaceous material was chemically isolated from the ores and passivated residues, and examined by FTIR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and gold adsorption capacity. The main component of the carbonaceous material in these ores was found to be a naturally occurring activated carbon-type compound. Hydro-carbons were detected on rare occasions, but no evidence was seen for humic acids. Ore samples were passivated by autoclaving, or by treatment with sodium hypochlorite or gaseous chlorine. In some of the passivation tests, a new peak was observed in the IR spectra of the isolated carbonaceous material, that was due to carbonyl functionalities. However, all of the passivation treatments tested decreased preg robbing significantly. This suggested that the appearance of the carbonyl peak was due to the severity of the conditions during passivation, rather than the method used.

Combustion synthesis, or self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), reaction systems are discussed with respect to thermodynamics and kinetics. In particular, the effect of the process parameters, e.g. particle size, [All] ignition and combustion temperatures, on these self-sustaining reactions is discussed. Combustion theory is used to investigate the effect of the overall actuation energy of the SHS reaction on the combustion front propagation rate and in obtaining a clearer understanding of the transition from stable to unstable propagation. Finally, examples of the application of combustion synthesis to advanced materials processes are made, in particular the synthesis of Ni-Ti-X intermetallic shape memory alloys, TiC-AI2O3 and ZrB2-AI203 ceramic composite materials.

It is a pleasure to introduce this session on frontier technology and present an overview of pyrometallurgical technology, as it is today and where it may be heading. While there have been many advances in hydro-metallurgical processing in our times, pyrometallurgy has not been still, and more novel processes have been introduced in the last four decades than in all previous ages of humanity put together. As a result, pyrometallurgy has managed to remain the predominant mode of producing metals from ores and concentrates: over 95% of the world primary metals production, including iron, manganese, copper, lead, chromium and nickel, is obtained via the high temperature route. Some of the characteristics of pyrometallurgy, along with the corollary industrial advantages are shown in [Table 1]: [ ] On the other hand, the necessity of operating at high temperatures also entails special problems and it is unfortunate that research on how to overcome these problems has not, in most cases, kept up with the development of these wonderful novel processes. We shall first speak of the important developments in pyrometallurgy which have brought us to the current state of the technology, and subsequently on the problems still encountered and the kind of research and development that will be necessary to bring pyrometallurgy on a par with other late twentieth-century technological developments.

Mine fires have always been of great concern to mining engineers and their behavior has been studied for a long time. Although an abundance of observations exist, no satisfactory mathematical model for their interpretation and extrapolation has become known. The paper presented here tries to close this gap, making use of the laws of chemical kinetics, energy and momentum conservation. To overcome the mathematical difficulties, the fire zone is axially divided into segments and radially into sections, each one with an extension of only a few inches. Conditions in segments and sections are updated in time intervals of one second or less. To solve the large number of resulting equations, a numerical solution is performed. The model has so far been tried on timber fires. It confirms experimental observations on the ignition phases and equilibria of these fires.

Geochemical returns from commercial analytical laboratories are often delayed because of postal and other bulk distribution inefficiencies. Consequently, minerals exploration programs are handicapped due to insufficient time for treatment, analysis, and diagnosis of the data. The minerals industry lacks a system for rapid transmission of geochemical data which allows immediate entry into statistical and plotting routines. Over the past three years, Houston International Minerals Corporation (HIMCO) has developed a computer-based system to receive, treat, and distribute geochemical data. In the past two years, Bondar-Clegg (Denver) and Chemex (Vancouver) have developed systems to transmit' data directly to HIMCO via the world-wide Boeing Computer Services (BCS) network. The main benefits to HIMCO have been ten less days for reporting turnaround, ten less days for keypunching, less data handling, accuracy. The benefits to the laboratories have been improved in-house data management, reporting, and HIMCO's increased geochemical activity.

Geothermal and operational reasons in the German coal mining industry make it necessary to an increasing extent to climatize coal faces and headings by means of refrigeration plants. Air coolers installed on coal faces as well as in gateroads play an important part in such climatization. They must transfer, under difficult conditions, the refrigerating capacity supplied by central or de-central refrigeration plants from the chilled water to the air in the workings. The performance data of two new types of coalface coolers and of two different types of gateroad coolers were measured in two testing stations under different thermo- dynamic conditions with dust-free fresh air. As air coolers must be installed particularly at working points with a high .dust load the heat exchanging surfaces are fouled for the most part causing an essential reduction of the refrigerating capacity. The investigations therefore were extended to measurements with a certain dust load in the intake air of the coolers.

The existing Rome-Florence railroad capacity is inadequate for the traffic volume. To increase this capacity and to reduce the traveling time the Italian National Railroad Administration has decided to provide an additional 400% of rail capacity. This new rail line will be known as the Direttissima Roma-Florence line. It is planned to operate the trains on this connection at speeds of 250 km per hr. Table 1 lists the main design characteristics. [TABLE 1. Castiglione Tunnel is a part of the fifth section, 42 km in length, which has been awarded to Consorzio Ferrofir which is a joint venture composed of the construction firms of Astaldi - Di Penta - Lodigiani - Sogene.

Begun in 1992, an abandoned and inactive mine inventory in the Black Hills National Forest has resulted in a hazard ranking of the most severely affected sites. For purposes of the inventory, the Black Hills were divided into three main regions: the northern Black Hills, with primarily gold mines; the central Black Hills, with pegmatite mines and some gold mines; and the southern Black Hills, with primarily uranium mines. A computerized data base has been developed along with standard forms for field crews. The forms were designed to provide maximum compatibility with other abandoned mine inventories on various federal and state lands. Measures recommended for the most hazardous and heavily affected sites include regrading of unstable slopes, fencing of open shafts, and remediation of the most severe acidic mine drainage problems. Specific examples are illustrated where remediation and safety measures were recommended or have been implemented. The vast majority of the sites, however, needed little or no remedial action.
