Clay minerals can be a source of problems in heap leaching operations. The ore for many heap leach operations is commonly acid-sulfate alteration zone rocks which may be found in hot springs deposits as well as the supergene zone of other near- surface gold deposits. Clays can be important constituents of these ores. Swelling clays, such as smectite, can come loose from the agglomerated ore, migrate within the heap, concentrate in pore spaces and often plug up flow channels in the heap Cement is often added to the ore as a binder during the agglomeration process. Lime is added for pH control. Their presence, combined with the sodium cyanide commonly used to leach, can raise the pH of the leach solution to 10 or even 12. This very alkaline solution can cause dissolution of some mineral Some clays, such as kaolinite, are not very stable in high pH solutions. They can be dissolved and reprecipitated as other clay species if sufficient silica and the appropriate cations are available in solution. Silica gels and amorphous materials can also be created from the dissolved kaolinite and other minerals and act as retardants to the flow of leach solutions in the heap. Therefore, before a heap leach operation is built, the operator should evaluate the clays in the ore and test the agglomeration procedure. It is important to know not only the mineralogy and the chemistry of the leach environment but how the minerals and solutions interact and what the products of this interaction are. A hypothesis is presented in this paper that expanding smectite- bearing clays can be generated within the heap. How and why this happens will be explained.

The Tertiary Silverton caldera collapsed asymmetrically to the southwest 27.5 m.y. ago. Resurgent volcanic activity is expressed by a quartz-monzonite stock at the southern caldera margin and by the Red Mountain porphyry stock in the northwest of the caldera which were emplaced at 25 m.y. and 11 m.y. b.p., respectively. The apical Eureka graben formed between 27.5-22.5 m.y. ago and transects the Silverton caldera southwestward. In the northeast it terminates at the 22.5 m.y. Lake City caldera margin. This graben as well as caldera faults provide dominant structural control for base and precious metal deposits. The epithermal gold mineralization of the Gold King mine is proximal to the Red Mountain stock in the north central part of the caldera. Here, west-northwest striking faults related to the collapse of the caldera intersect northeast faults of the Eureka graben. Superimposed upon earlier base metal mineralization at 23 to 22.5 m.y. b.p., the 11 m.y. younger gold metallization was a distinct event at Gold King. Supergene enrichment of the hypogene precious metal assemblage resulted in a metal tenor of up to 3,016 g/t gold and 1,088 g/t silver. The deposit is hosted by quartz-latite tuffs, flows, and flow breccias of the Burns Formation. Veins, up to 5 m wide follow steeply southeast and northwest dipping structures of the Eureka graben. Subsidiary veins up to 2 m wide branch off the main lode and are termed "flat veins" because of their conformable strike but shallow dip of 45' to 50' toward the northwest. INTRODUCTION Limestone injection work was completed in a 440-kW (1.5-million Btu per hour) pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000-kg/h (110,000-lb per hour) industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives were to: (1) identify the important variables that affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum SO2 removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. A more detailed report is given by Lewis et al. (1985). The test program was divided into two phases. The objectives of Phase I were to determine the important variables that affect SO2 reduction and to investigate the effect of limestone addition on combustor operation and heat transfer surfaces. The objective of Phase II was to determine, using only the important variables identified during Phase I, the conditions that resulted in the greatest sulfur dioxide reduction. Phase I Test program Using one limestone, five variables were identified as having an effect on SO2 reduction. These are noted with their respective ranges: heat release rate [103 to 166 kW/m3 (10,000 to 16,000 Btu per hour-cu ft)], Ca/S molar ratio (0 to 3), flue gas oxygen concentration (3% to 5%), additive particle size [90% -150 µm (-100 mesh) and 90% -45 µm (-325 mesh)], and burner stoichiometry (SR = 0.75 and >1.15). A 2.3% sulfur northern West Virginia coal, pulverized to a nominal grind of 70% -75 µm (-200 mesh), was burned for the tests. The limestone used was obtained from a Maysville, KY, quarry and contained 51.75% (wt) CaO. An 11-run statistically designed program (plus three duplicates) was used to screen the five variables. The effect of limestone injection on the combustor heat transfer surfaces was determined by comparing the heat transfer rates through a slag panel and fouling probes during periods with and without limestone injection. Combustor operation was determined by noting any operating problems that occurred during the tests. Test procedure After furnace wall temperatures had stabilized at operating conditions, heat transfer surfaces (slag panel and fouling probes) and the convection section were blown clean, and a four-hour test was begun. The

The use o f cyanide to extract gold from ores is widespread. In the process of extracting gold, cyanide may form metal cyanide complexes with a variety of other metals present in the ore. This study was carried out to investigate the biodegradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex and tetracyanonickelate under varying pH and nutrient additions. Detailed studies using shake flask cultures and bioreactors showed that naturally occurring bacteria residing on gold-leach-pad ore uti¬lized the Cu(I)-cyanide complex (CuCN) and tetracyano-nickelate, Na2(NiCN4), as carbon and/or nitrogen sources. Ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) and/or cyanate (CNO-) accumulated in solution as the metal cyanide complexes were degraded. The accumulation of cyanate as a product is a concern due to its toxicity. Degradation rates were increased if a growth substrate (peptone, 0.1%) was added to the medium or if bioreactors were primed with peptone before addition of the metal-cyanide complex. Tetracyanonickelate was degraded at pH 8 without added peptone, but it was not degraded at pH 10. The addition of peptone was required for degradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex at pH 8 and pH 10. At pH 8, the addition of peptone resulted in the accumulation of cyanate, whereas, at pH 10, cyanate was not detected in the cultures. Biodegradation of metal-cyanide complexes was faster (approximately 1.5 to ten times faster) in bioreactors than in shake flask cultures. The addition of peptone was not required for degradation of metal-cyanide complexes in bioreactors. However, priming the bioreaetor with peptone resulted in higher metal-cyanide degradation rates over multiple cycles.

Introduction Tailings disposal methods used by the mining industry include the use of on-land impoundments, surface and underground mine backfill and marine disposal. The latter method, where applicable and under certain circumstances, can be the most economical and best environmental option. The term marine disposal is used to describe deposition of tailings in the open ocean, coastal waters, fjords and inland lakes. A major element in planning and designing a marine outfall is the assessment of its potential environmental impacts. The nature of the disposed tailings, and the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the receiving water body must be carefully assessed prior to deciding whether marine disposal is an acceptable option for a particular project. During the last decade, the North American mining industry has demonstrated a commitment to studying potential adverse environmental impacts of marine tailings disposal and to continue monitoring of the receiving waters. Extensive monitoring programs have been undertaken by Canadian mines. Marine tailings disposal is not used in the United States today. One of the largest U.S. mines proposing to use this option is the Quartz Hill mine of U.S. Borax in Southeastern Alaska. To assure the regulatory agencies and the public of the viability and acceptability of this option, U.S. Borax undertook an extensive program of environmental studies aimed at assessing the impact of marine tailings disposal. This program was part of the feasibility and environmental permitting studies conducted by Bechtel Civil & Minerals, Inc, on behalf of U.S. Borax. Due to the unique nature of the proposed tailings disposal system, a Board of Consultants was established. The Board assisted in planning the modeling and field program and reviewed ongoing work. This paper outlines the basic elements of the marine tailings disposal study program which can be viewed as a prototype for similar studies elsewhere. Background The Quartz Hill molybdenum deposit is located on a knoll in an elevated valley in a mountainous region of southeast Alaska, about 45 miles east of Ketchikan (Figure 1).

To evaluate the influence of uniformly tensioned roof bolts on roof stability, mechanically anchored roof bolts were installed using the conventional bolter and a specially developed thrust and torque controlled retrofitable box mounted on a bolting machine. Thirteen thousand bolts were installed over 19 crosscuts in a 4 heading development in an operating coal mine. Geological , bolt and mine parameters were recorded at bolt installation, and bolt tension histories, roof sag and other changes evident in the rooms, crosscuts and intersections were recorded over a 2 month period. In all, 24 variables and 11 responses were quantified at 67 bolt clusters. These data were analyzed statistically to determine the significant variables influencing roof stability. As the mine development was safe and stable during the monitoring period, roof sag after two months was used as an index to quantify "stability." The variables of significance were shown to be coefficient of variation of bolt tension, bolt anchorage capacity, roof lithology, roof shape, standard deviation of bolt tension, and dip of roof lithologies. It was concluded that of the variables with which the mine operator has control, bolt tension uniformity was the most significant parameter at this mine. Other variables, such as intersection type and time between mining and bolting , were not significant, whereas, some other potentially significant variables such as horizontal stress or roof joint frequency did not vary sufficiently for their influence on stability to be evaluated.

The Formative Years Douglas Winston Fuerstenau was born December 6, 1928 in Hazel, SD to Edwin Arnold and Hazel Pauline (Karterud) Fuerstenau. His father, of German extraction, was a farmer and, later, a cabinet maker, while his mother, of Norwegian lineage, was a school teacher. His parents are still alive today at ages 91 and 88, respectively. Two younger brothers, Richard and Maurice and a sister, Jean, completed the family. The family first lived near Watertown and later in Lemmon and Mobridge, SD. The 1930's were a difficult period for any family in South Dakota. A decade-long drought made this a part of the dust bowl, which together with a serious infestation of grasshoppers (the locust plague described in The Bible), and the world-wide depression, made living difficult for all. In spite of these privations, Doug has many happy memories of his childhood which can be attributed to the resilience of youth and a strong family structure. He has fond memories of summers spent with his cousins on family farms where the children were introduced to farm chores at an early age. When he was old enough, he worked in a grocery store after school. At the age of 14 he spent the summer hearding 2,000 sheep near Lemmon, SD as his contribution to the war effort in that labor-short period. He remembers well the dust storms of the 1930ts, the destruction at his grandmother's farm by tornado, pulling weeds on the farm, threshing grain with a monstrous steam-driven machine and such pleasant childhood activi- ties as fishing for bullheads, hunting for rabbits, searching for arrowheads in newly plowed fields, and ice skating in the winter. Early in life his parents instilled in him a strong work ethic, a love of learning and the need for a good education. In 1943, the family moved to Rapid City, SD. With a population of 13,000, it was

The Tilden Mine is an iron ore mining, processing and pelletizing facility located on the Marquette Iron Range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It has a designed capacity to produce 8 million long tons of pellets annually from 21 million long tons of crude. It is a partnership owned by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, Algoma Steel Corporation, LTV Steel Corporation, the Steel Company of Canada, Wheeling Pitts- burgh Steel Corporation and the Sharon Steel Corporation. Cleveland- Cliffs manages and operates the Tilden. The crude ore averages 35% iron and is primarily non-magnetic iron oxide and silica. The major ore mineral is martite. Hematite, earthy hematite, goethite and magnetite are also present. The principal gangue mineral is chert. The ore grains are mostly in the 10 to 25 micron size range which necessitates very fine grinding for liberation. The concentrating process is the most complex one used in the iron ore industry. The unique technology for Tilden was developed in the mid and late 60's. The design and construction occurred in the early 70's and operation of the first phase which was of 4 MLTPY capacity began in October. 1974. Expansion of the facility to the current 8 MLTPY capacity was completed in 1979. Chemicals are the key to the beneficiation process at the Tilden Mine. The flowsheet utilizes selective flocculation - desliming, cationic silica flotation and concentrate dewatering by thickening and filtering. Nine different process chemcals are used. The control of the reagent feed systems is highly auto- mated. The entire concentrator is operated from a central control room. The concentrator flow diagram is presented in figure 1. The plant consists of 12 primary autogenous grinding lines, a common crushing circuit to handle an intermediate product within the primary grinding section, 24 pebble mill lines with cyclones and deslime thickeners, 12 flotation lines, 4 concentrate thickeners and slurry tanks, 8 lines of filters with six machines per line, and 2 tailings thickeners. A pumping system was installed in 1980 to permit the direct return of tailings thickener overflow water back to the reuse water pumphouse.

In 1990, US mine production of barite increased 54.1 %. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, increased by 27.6%. Imports were about the same as 1989. World mine production in¬creased 12.3%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, decreased 12.7%, according to the Bureau. The declared value, cif US port, of all imported crude barite during the year 1990 increased from $40.27/t ($36.54 per st) in 1989 to $40.61/t ($36.84 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 82% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 750/c, of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 25% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This includes barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics, and glass. Tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market increased due to the higher average rig count during 1990. The average number of rotary rigs operating, (1010), was 16.2% more than the 1989 average of 869 in the US.

INTRODUCTION A current need of the phosphate industry is the development of process technology for treatment of high carbonate content ore. About 75 to 80 percent of the world phosphate reserves (1) are associated with carbonate gangue, which is not amenable to treatment by the existing techniques. Numerous laboratory and pilot plant studies have been devoted to carbonate-phosphate separation. Different techniques were involved (washing, sieving, attrition, flotation, calcination, and leaching). For technical and economical considerations, flotation appears to be an efficient process for this problem. Separation of carbonates (calcite and dolomite) from igneous phosphate is applied in industrial plants in Brazil, Finland, and South Africa. But, for sedimentary phosphate, no industrial realization exists at this time, with the possible exception of some plants in China. The main problems with sedimentary phosphates are: • high substitution by CO3-2 and F- for P04 -3 in the apatite lattice. • larger surface area of the phosphate particles because their surface is porous and irregular. • tendency of sedimentary minerals to produce more slimes in conditioning than the crystalline minerals, hence, larger dosages of collectors are required for sedimentary minerals. Investigations reported in the literature indicate that most processes developed for sedimentary carbonate-phosphate separation involved inverse flotation of carbonates using fatty acids as collectors (2), (3) associated with phosphoric acid (4), monosodium phosphate (5), F- (6), or SiF6 -2 (7) as phosphate depressants. Later investigations, conducted by A. Henchiri and G. Baudet (8), (9), (10), (11), (12), (13) in the BRGM technology department, of phosphoric esters revealed that these reagents are selective collectors for carbonate-phosphate separation. The above investigators developed a process which used phosphoric esters to collect carbonate minerals and sulfuric acid or sodium fluorosilicate as depressants for phosphate. Extensive comparative tests for different processes on the same phosphate sample show that the process developed at BRGM is one of the most promising methods proposed for sedimentary phosphate-carbonate separation. It should be pointed out, however, that phosphoric esters make abundant froths. The handling of these excessive froths will be a problem in an industrial-scale plant. This paper outlines test work performed in order to optimize and to improve the efficiency of the flotation process on a sedimentary phosphate ore selected from the Sra Ouertane orebody. The Sra Ouertane flotation process, illustrated on Figure 1, first removes carbonate minerals by inverse flotation and then recovers phosphate as a froth product, leaving quartz as a cell product.

"The ecological costs related to the various optimized production schemes were calculated based on the designed ultimate pit. Moreover, the influence of the ecological costs on the selection of production schemes was discussed. In one designed pit, a series of geologically optimum pushbacks with sufficiently small increment were produced using the floating cone method founded on the principle of the highest metal content. Then all the pushbacks were reordered by the dynamic network diagram. The production scheme with the maximum NPV route was considered as the optimum one. The ecological impacts produced by mining were quantified and the ecological cost calculation models, which contain the direct eco-value loss, the indirect eco-value loss, the eco-restoration cost and the carbon emission cost were proposed. In one big open pit mine case, various production schemes were optimized and the one with maximum NPV was selected without taking into account the eco-costs. The scheme with the maximum comprehensive profit was obtained by calculating the eco-cost of each scheme. The results showed that the best scheme considered with the eco-cost was not the scheme with the maximum NPV. Therefore, the eco-cost presents the effect on the selection of the best production scheme.Introduction Optimizing production scheme is to determine the mining quantities of ore and rock, the pushing position of stope each year, and maximize the NPV of mine. In the theory, production scheming optimization has gone through trial and error (Pana and Carlson 1966), linear programming method (Johnson 1968), mixed integer programming (Gershon 1983), integer mapping (Kim and Cai 1990), dynamic programming et al (Gu et al 2014). In recent years, the study on production scheduling optimization has been focused on two aspects. On the one hand, the study is to solve the investment risk caused by the uncertainties of economic and geological environment (Ramazan and Dimitrakopoulos 2013, Marcotte and Caron 2010, Lamghari and Dimitrakopoulos 2012, Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos 2004, Benndorf and Shishvan 2014). On the other hand, the emphasis of the study was on reducing the problems for the optimization algorithm, to make it more efficient and practical (Cullenbine et al 2011, Shishvan and Sattarvand 2015, Askari-Nasab et al 2011, Nasab et al 2010). However, different production schemes cause different damage of mine land and pollutant emission, thus triggering environment problem. With the improvement of people’s consciousness of environment protection, the environmental issue of mining has been attracting more and more attention."

"INTRODUCTION In recent years, the development of tunnel boring machines has revolutionized the tunneling industry. The general structure of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) can be described as a multi-component system. To achieve high performance rates, machine elements have to perform reliably. Performance losses and interruptions of the construction process should be prevented or at least, reduced to a minimum. In order to achieve high advancing rates, cutting tools must be in good condition at any time. Furthermore, failure of individual tools might result in increased and faster wear of remaining structural components. For this reason, maintaining and replacing cutting tools is crucial to prevent project delays due to insufficient boring performance. Precise prognoses concerning the prevailing geology are infeasible and thus, efficient scheduling of maintenance actions is challenging. The intention of this work is to analyze different approaches of TBM maintenance in soft ground. Different strategies are analyzed by the use of a simulation approach. Cutting tool condition is regarded as performance limiting factor. The maximum operation time of the cutting tools is determined using the “Soil Abrasivity Index”. A case study serves to show the effects of different maintenance strategies on total project duration. SCHEDULING OF MAINTENANCE ACTIONS Scheduling maintenance actions of single and multi-component systems concerns numerous fields of industrial production. Concentrating on mechanized tunneling in soft ground, cutting tool maintenance represents the most common reason for intermission of advance (Köppl 2014). In literature, time-based and condition-based maintaining techniques are widely discussed. The following section outlines the principles of time- and condition-based policies. Furthermore, examples for their applications in recent research are given. Time-Based Maintenance In general, the time-based maintenance approach assumes that the failure behavior of the system components is predictable. Maintenance actions are scheduled according to predefined intervals (e.g., hours, days, weeks). A detailed analysis of preventive repair times or interval forms the basis for maintenance decisions. For this approach, an adequate quantity and quality of data is fundamental. Numerous studies deal with the analysis of time-based maintenance for production equipment. In fields of mechanized tunneling, unplanned machine downtimes restrict the applicability of time-based maintenance approaches. Thus, this paper mainly focuses on condition-based maintenance."

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund, is monitoring the response of two foundations to ground movements induced by subsidence from a high-extraction retreat room-and-pillar operation in southern Illinois. The objective of this monitoring program is to study the inter- action between the ground surface and a structure during a subsidence event. Data from such a study should enhance the understanding of the mechanisms that produce structural damage and aid in the design of structures that resist such damage. This paper describes the monitoring instrumentation and techniques as they relate to the mining and site conditions. The capability of a tiltmeter to detect and follow the tilt of the foundations caused by the mining subsidence sequence is demonstrated. Using data from this tiltmeter, the development of curvature in the foundations as they conformed to the displaced ground surface is shown. This curvature is rep- resented by differences in tilt at various points on the foundations, indicating a change in tilt over a horizontal distance. Also, even though subsidence damage has not been fully analyzed, preliminary observations of the cracks that formed in the foundations are reported. These cracks resulted in the separation of one footing into distinct pieces; therefore, their effect on the tilt readings is cited.

The compared advantages of digital and analogue computers for solving ventilation problems have for many years been a matter of discussion among the specialists whose respective arguments have prevailed in turn depending on the progress of technology. In the French coal mines however none of these two techniques has superseded the other so far. In France, between 1956 and 1962 only the digital computer and from 1962 to 1967 only the analogue computer was used. Since then they are both used concurrently and complementarily. Depending on the problems dealt with, the most advantageous method is chosen in each case. In the case of ventilation planning for projected workings, it is possible to test variant forms of the development plans and many parameters can be varied. In such a case the flexibility of the analogue computer is a great help. Wrong lines taken will be rapidly abandoned and little by little solutions will be found. By examining the results of a test, new ideas will generally come into the mind and they can be tested right away. Such an investigation is always-carried out in conjunction with the engineers of the mine concerned. In complex networks it often leads to solu¬tions which could not have been devised from the start. The same work could be done by using a numerical method and the digital computers operating in the different coal mine districts, but for the same tests, the time required would be much longer and the participants would not be encouraged to use their imagination so intensively. Or the other hand for calculations of ventilation networks in ventilation surveying, use is made of the digital computer which gives the possibility of storing the data corresponding to the different mines concerned. The questions to be solved concern problems for which the ventilation network is essentially known, and in which only a small number of parameters can be varied. The few possible alternatives to be calculated can therefore be handled by the digital computer in spite of the relative lack of flexibility of the method. To sum up our ventilation studies are conducted in France as follows: - For ventilation studies and modifications due to projected workings use is made of the ana¬logue computer. For a given mine the updating of such ventilation studies is carried out every 3 or 5 years according to the progression of the workings. - For ventilation surveying while normal working operations are in progress, use is made of the digital computer.

JOHN HAMRIC: Our next topic leader is David Huth, superintendent of sulfuric power generation, DAP, and shipping for IMC-Agrico, Nichols Plant, Mulberry, Florida. With a title like that it's no wonder he believes in empowerment. His topic today is "The Triumphs and Pitfalls of Using Empowerment Techniques." DAVID HUTH: Empowerment and its benefits are a desirable alternative to the traditional management structure. The difference between the two is the amount of decision- making authority and responsibility given to individuals by a supervisor. Just what is empowerment and how does it work? Empowerment is relinquishing to individuals the authority and responsibility to make daily decisions. Can everyone be empowered? What if they make a wrong decision? Will I empower myself out of a job? These are questions that all managers have when they hear the word empowerment. In today's fast-paced and high-pressure business environment, the old way of managing people must be replaced with a new approach. No longer can we, as managers, make all the decisions. The increased work loads due to downsizing, consolidation, and synergies have stretched us too thin. What about our employees? How can we motivate them into the high-performance teams that our companies are demanding? What possibly could satisfy both these issues? The solution to these problems can be solved with the power of employee empowerment. Employee empowerment will not only lessen the load on managers but will build teamwork, motivation, and pride into the employees who work for the managers who use it. American business was rudely awakened in the early 1980s when the Japanese companies not only caught up to American companies but literally flew by them. America was fat, dumb, and happy after World War II. Why wouldn't they be? They had all the factories. Everyone else had to rebuild. So for 40 years American business lounged in the limelight of very little true competition. But times change. Unfortunately, American business did not. Now the cry to perform in the new global economy has come down from the corporate boardrooms. Down through the ranks it has been felt. Guess who is supposed to make it work? But where are all those people who are going to make this rejuvenation and corporate renaissance possible? Many of them are gone-lost in downsizing, synergies, and rightsizings

Introduction Ring roller mills are efficient size reduction machines embodying the following machine functions: 1) Size Reduction: from a feed size of 2 in. to various size products as fine as 400 mesh, or granulation from 2 in. to 6 mesh containing a minimum of fines. 2) Drying: fluid bed drying of wet feed materials. 3) Conveying: negative pressure air system results in dust-free conveying. 4) Beneficiation: liberation and removal of foreign materials from the auxiliary bottom discharge simultaneously while grinding. Operation Operation of the roller mill system, Figs. 78 and 79, is completely automatic. A feeder introduces raw material into the grinding chamber in the base of the roller mill at a rate determined by pressure variations within the roller mill as material is ground and air conveyed away. The feeder will be activated by the reduced static pressure and introduce unground material into the system, thereby maintaining a constant differential pressure. Plows located ahead of each grinding roll direct the material upward and between the grinding rolls and the bull ring where it is ground to size. The grinding rolls are free to swing out centrifugally, which forces them to bear upon and grind the raw material. Being free to pivot axially, the rolls automatically assume the proper position for grinding and need no adjustment to compensate for wear. Rotation of the rolls is by rolling contact. Once ground to size, material is swept out of the mill by the controlled air flow from the centrifugal main mill fan. Air suspended, the ground material passing through the adjustable spinner separator. In the separator, an accurate size classification is made which allows product-size material to be conveyed away from the roller mill while oversize material is returned internally for additional grinding. By varying the speed of the separator drive, more or less cyclonic action is achieved at this location, effectively controlling product size. Product sized material is removed from the airstream by the cyclone collector. Typically, a conveyor or product storage bin will be located to accept the product as it exits from the bottom of the cyclone collector.

The studied coal mi1e is an underground coal mine located in the northern Wasatch Plateau of central Utah (Figure 1) . Since operation began in 1981, in situ stress conditions have been encountered which differ from the assumed conditions utilized during early mine design efforts. Geologic structures also varied somewhat from those projected during initial geologic interpretations of the area. The encountered geologic conditions combined with the unusual stress conditions prompted a combined study of in situ stress and stress-related geologic structures. The study was conducted in two phases, with phase 1 consisting of detailed underground mapping and analysis of stress-related geologic structures to determine stress orientations from which they originated; and phase 2, consisting of over- coring two sites within the mine to determine present in situ stress orientations and magnitudes. GEOLOGIC ANALYSIS Three types of geologic structures have been encountered in the mine that act as indicators of stress orientations of the geologic past. Two of these structures, faulting, and igneous dikes, are directly measurable in the mine. A third type of structure, photolineation, was detected through remote sensing methods and shoe god correlation to roof conditions in certain areas of the mine. Faults Two major orientations of faulting have been encountered in the studied coal mine, including a system of N 80 W striking normal faults and a system of N 55 to 70 W striking oblique-slip faults. Only data collected from the oblique-slip faults were used for this study due to the fact that these faults offset the N 80 W faults wherever the two systems intersect, indicating that the N 55 to 70 W system was created by a more recent stress field. Figure 2 shows locations within the mine where data were collected from seven locations along oblique-slip faults. Data collection consisted of measurement of fault plane strike and dip, fault slickenside trend and plunge, and slip direction. The data are tabulated in Table 1. The fault data were then plotted on stereo nets to determine the stress orientations present at the td of faulting (Figure 3). The determined stress orientations are 32~0 included in Table 1. The stereo net plots show average principal stress orientations of: 1) [ ] plunge 1 degree. These data suggest that the N 55 to 70 W oblique-slip faults were produced by a nearly

The Cananea porphyry copper-deposit is the site of the second largest mining operation in Mexico. Mineralization is related to quartz-monzonite Laramide stocks that intrude volcanic and volcaniclastic Mesozoic rocks. The ore deposit is a stockwork and breccia-pipes system with Cu-Mo sulfides and pervasive quartz-sericite hydrothermal alteration. A study was made of the arsenic distribution in the mine and the ore-dressing plants. The arsenic (As) in the mine is related to a feldspathic quartz-porphyry type rock associated mainly with the breccia pipe structures (100-700 ppm As in the Veta 7 Breccia). There is vertical zoning, with As decreasing in the deepest part of the breccias. This As mineralization corresponds to a later sulfide hydrothermal stage. The concentrates are made of Cu, Fe and Mo sulfides and some minor quantities of As minerals. The most important copper minerals are chalcocite-covellite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Some of these minerals have 390-880 ppm As. The main As mineral is enargite[ [Cu2.97Fe0.06(As0.90 Sb0.01Pb0 01 )0.92 S4 051 and there are traces of stibioluzonite-luzonite I Cu, .95(Aso.4vSbu.49)0.9rfS4.07-Cu2 93(Aso.H4Sba.10)0.94S4.13] and of another stibioluzonite mineral type with substitution of As by Bi[Cu,96(Ascr,,'Sb0ccrB'OJ3jI~6S] These minerals contribute 80% of the As in the concentrates.

All technologies move through a cycle from infancy to maturity. Thickened tailings have moved into the young adulthood phase of its development. Many mining companies like the idea of reducing their water-taking and water disposal issues. This limits the risks associated with traditional surface water-covered tailings facilities and the reduced dilution possible through underground disposal of thickened or paste tailings. Just as home theater systems advertised as ?plug and play? are rarely quite that straightforward, implementing and improving a thickened-tailings system has its challenges. However, the technology has also developed in recent years so it is more accessible. Some success factors have emerged because of the new technologies. Is thickened tailings the right solution? The first step in success with thickened tailings should be whether it is, in fact, the right solution for a particular mine. And, if so, what type of thickening is best. The answer depends on several factors, including: ? Grain size: The grain size that is optimal for maximizing mill recovery is some-times not suitable for thickening. Other mineralogical factors, such as mica content, may also influence whether the tailings are suitable. ? Water issues: Available water does not always have the purity necessary for the process. Another issue to consider is that if water is in short supply, as is increasingly often the case, thickening may be a way to reduce the need to both take and dispose of water.

The announcement of a minable reserve of 13.6 Mt (16 million tons) averaging 0.9 g/t (0.027 oz per ton) Au and 2.4 g/t (0.71 oz per ton) Ag for the open pit-heap leach reserve at Red Mountain No. 3 in Ouray County, Colorado, by Cornucopia Resources in November 1985 brings another open pit-heap leach precious metal ore body to the production stage. With about 8.2 Mt (9 million tons) of waste and metallurgical studies showing acceptable recovery rates, low reagent consumption, and good final percentage recovery, Red Mountain is a discovery that will add to the precious metal inventory of the US. Frank Baumgaruler of Denver, CO, recognized the precious metal potential in Red Mountain No. 3 and acquired all of the old claims. James Matlock conducted a field reconnaissance over Red Mountain No. 3 independently of the Baumgartner activities and recognized epithermal alteration and mineralization in the Tertiary volcanics. He recommended acquisition of the ground and was able to obtain rights and drill six core holes for Amoco in 1982. Amoco drilled a further nine core holes in 1983, but then dropped the property. Cyrano Resources examined the data and through its consulting geologist, V.F. Hollister, acquired the rights dropped by Amoco. In 1984 Cyrano began further drilling of the ore zone demonstrated by Amoco but they were then acquired by Cornucopia Resources. Cornucopia completed development of the property and commenced the permitting process in 1986. The property was recognized as a disseminated gold deposit by both Baumgartner and Matlock, and both deserve credit for properly evaluating mineralized outcrop in the Tertiary volcanics. However, Cornucopia recognized the profit potential in the heap leach exploitation of the ores and de- serves credit for completion of premine feasibility studies. The discovery is clearly a geological one, but the premine engineering studies were essential to the conversion of the prospect to a commercial mining enterprise. The deposit lies on the circular bounding fault of the Silverton caldera. Two reprints follow that help understand the geologic setting of the ore controls.
