Georgius Agricola in 1556 wrote De Re Metallica, one of the first and probably the most famous of mining reference works. In Book 1 he reflects rather elegantly on mining and miners. "Many persons hold the opinion that the metal industries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requiring not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. For a miner must have the greatest skill in his work, that he may know first of all what mountain or hill, what valley or plain, can be prospected most profitably, or what he should leave alone; moreover, he must understand the veins, stringers, and seams in the rocks. Then he must be thoroughly familiar with the many and varied species of earths, juices, gems, stones, marbles, rocks, metals, and compounds. He must also have a complete knowledge of the method of making all underground works. Lastly, there are the various systems of assaying substances and of preparing them for smelting; and here again there are many altogether diverse methods. ... "Furthermore, there are many arts and sciences of which a miner should not be ignorant. First there is Philosophy, that he may discern the origin, cause, and nature of subterranean things; for then he will be able to dig out the veins easily and advantageously, and to obtain more abundant results from his mining. Secondly, there is Medicine, that he may be able to look after his diggers and other workmen, that they do not meet with those diseases to which they are more liable than work- men in other occupations, or if they do meet with them, that he himself may be able to heal them or may see that the doctors do so. Thirdly follows Astronomy, that he may know the divisions of the heavens and from them judge the direction of the veins. Fourthly, there is the science of Surveying that he may be able to estimate how deep a shaft should be sunk to reach the tunnel which is being driven to it, and to determine the limits and boundaries in these workings, especially in depth. Fifthly, his knowledge of Arithmetical Science should be such that he may calculate the cost to be incurred in the machinery and the working of the mine. Sixthly, his learning must comprise Architecture, that he himself may construct the various machines and timber work required underground, or that he may be able to explain the method of the construction to others. The goal of slope mechanics is to achieve efficient and safe pit slopes. In the case of ultimate mine slopes the objective is to minimize the stripping ratio by steepening the slopes to their maximum stable limit. On the other hand, the inclination of working slopes is normally established by operating space requirements and the function of slope mechanics should be the continuous surveillance of slope conditions to assure long-term stability and to provide timely warning of impending slides so that corrective measures may be incorporated in production planning. In 1956 Kennecott instituted a program to provide the resources necessary to develop and maintain a slope mechanics capability, including technical knowledge, engineers, and instruments. Although the goal has not been fully achieved, very significant progress has been made. Other papers (3, 4, 7, 8, & 12) have described the purposes and detailed results of the most recent study carried out at the Kimbley Pit. The study has provided valuable experience and has given the industry a three dimensional picture of the stability variables that influence a mine slope. The study has better defined those areas which require further investigation and has indicated those design and analytical techniques which can be used with confidence. In effect, the study has paved the way for the next step; that of refining the design process and applying it for profit.

"In order to study the removal efficiency of Cu2+ from acid mine drainage by prepared bentonite-steel slag composite particles, adsorption experiment was carried out. The composite particles were characterized by X-ray Diffraction analysis technique (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The results show that: the composite particles can release alkali to neutralize the acid of acid mine drainage; the adsorption and chemical precipitation of Cu2+ occurred in the whole reaction process; the removal amount of composite particles on Cu2+ was 9.88 mg/g when the reaction reached equilibrium; the FTIR spectra revealed the existence of surface complexation; the SEM micrographs suggested that the composite particles would continue to adsorb and coagulate Cu2+ after the composite particles surface adsorbing Cu2+ and forming precipitate, namely, there was synergistic reaction of adsorption and coagulation; the XRD patterns further showed the existence of cation exchange and revealed that the states of Cu2+ in the surface of the composite particles was Cu-Si-O mineral phase and CuO(Cu(OH)2) polymerization precipitation. The bentonite-steel slag composite particles which can play a role of adsorption-coagulation synergism are excellent multifunctional green environmental mineral materials to treat acid mine drainage containing heavy metal ions.Introduction It is reported (Zuo and He 2013) that with the rapid development of industry, the world demand for mineral resources is increasing, while the problem of mine environmental pollution is becoming more and more serious due to the large amount of mining. The pollution of mine wastewater has become a global problem, in which acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the most serious waste water. It is also reported (Cong and Zhao 2003) that acid mine drainage containing high concentrations of heavy metals and having low pH value, causing serious negative influence to the mining production and ecological environment. Acid mine drainage is one of the most serious environmental pollution to the mining industry. In recent years, it has been widely concerned by scholars at home and abroad."

NEW ROUTES - 63rd STREET CROSSTOWN The New Route construction along East 63rd Street in Manhattan began in 1969 with the East River tunnel connecting Manhattan and Queens. The 63rd Street Line, once in Queens, is planned to connect to another new route called the Queens By Pass or Super Express (See Exhibit 1) which would connect to the Queens Boulevard Line at Forest Hills. The purpose of the Queens By Pass was to alleviate subway congestion to and from the Borough of Queens, whose population had rapidly expanded during and after World War II. The existing Queens Boulevard subway lines (the "E" and the "F" trains) are almost filled to capacity at their terminal stations with passengers from Long Island. Passengers boarding trains enroute from the local Queens stations have difficulty boarding crowded trains, and, at times, cannot board the trains. The New Routes, thus, were to give additional train capacity into Manhattan and thereby relieve the crowded conditions along the Queens Boulevard corridor. PROFILE - METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION The portion of the New Route passing east-west under East 63rd Street on Manhattan (See Exhibit 2) had to snake beneath intersecting structures running north and south, such as the Con Rail tracks below Park Avenue and the 80 ft deep Lexington Avenue Express track structure along Lexington Avenue. The cluster of gold deposits at the Goldstrike property is located in the Northern Carlin Trend in northeastern Nevada (Fig. 1). At many mature mining camps like Goldstrike, exploration innovation and success may wane with time. In this regard, sufficient exploration drilling was conducted in the area immediately north of the ultimate pit crest and under the final planned pit wall to test for a major deposit. No indications of large deposits were found, however, the majority of drill holes did intercept mineralization. Mining along the northern pit wall exposed significant structurally controlled ore-grade mineralization that had been missed by exploration drilling. In 2002 and early 2003, the mine geology group added reserves to the pit and improved the definition of underground resources by targeting specific ore-controlling structures within favorable stratigraphic units by utilizing relatively inexpensive horizontal RC drilling from the pit wall. The widespread occurrence of mineralization to the north of the pit was re-interpreted to be an indication of continuity of these mineralized zones. In January 2003, 70 feet of 0.332 opt Au at a depth of 710 to 780 feet was intercepted in a dewatering well. This intercept was significantly thicker and higher-grade than average for the area, which confirmed the existence of high-grade structural continuity, and helped secure management support for additional exploration. A timely and cost effective solution was needed to confirm the potential of the area. Immediate follow-up drilling on tighter grid spacing was rejected in favor of improving the geology model. Exploration across the property would benefit from an improved geology model, but to provide results in a timely manner, the area to the north of the Betze pit was chosen as a starting point (Fig. 2).

Sand-and-gravel aggregates have become the number-one, nonmetallic-mineral resource in the world. Surficial aggregate deposits of economic size are becoming increasingly rare in most parts of Canada. In southern Saskatchewan, this is especially true, and detection and delineation of intertill sand-and-gravel deposits with airborne electromagnetic (EM) surveys have proven very successful. Airborne and ground geophysical surveys detect such deposits by their resistivity contrast relative to the surrounding clay-rich soils. Dighem helicopter-borne electromagnetic surveys map soil variations over a large area quickly and cost effectively, greatly reducing the cost of detecting and mapping deposits compared with traditional methods (air-photo interpretation, ground EM, and drilling.). The multiple-frequency EM system used by Dighem can map variations both horizontally and vertically. Magnetic data collected simultaneously are useful in mapping bedrock geology. Both resistivity and bedrock maps aid in the important task of reducing drilling costs and person-hours in the field. The results of the survey are presented as maps of ground resistivity, which are relatively easy to interpret. These maps are produced in the field at the time of the survey, making quick follow-up of the survey possible. Airborne EM surveys can map the extent and depth of aggregate deposits more effectively than is practical from the ground. Since aggregate deposits can vary tremendously in a very short distance (<300 m) large-area EM maps can show both local area variability and also help develop intertill trends. A test survey for the Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation Department over a 3-km by 5-km area mapped all the known deposits as well as some unknown deposits, subsequently proven by drilling. The test-survey data show that the method not only detected the deposits, but also gave an estimate of the shape (volume) of each of the deposits. Comparison of the data to drill sections shows excellent correlation. Theoretical modelling demonstrates that the multifrequency system can discriminate sand and gravel from bedrock ridges. Since the successful test work, about 725 km2 of ground have been surveyed, resulting in the discovery of four new deposits, which can be used immediately, resulting in significant savings for the Saskatchewan government and taxpayer.

Commercial software programs are being utilized to create and maintain a mine subsidence database in conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of mines research on mine subsidence in Illinois. A three-year survey net of monitored structures in an Illinois subdivision was entered as textual information (attributes), on an existing AutoCAD drawing. These attributes can be optionally displayed on the corresponding drawing or extracted as a text file for import to a database program. The database program, dBASEIV, allows combinations of multiple database files for extensive querying capabilities. Subsurface database files can be merged with surface database files to enhance the effectiveness of surface response analyses in mine subsidence research. The geographic information system (GIS), pcARC/INFO, was chosen to integrate existing AutoCAD drawings and dBASEIV database files into a relational database with a graphical representation. The relational database allows users to update either the graphical representation or the database, with the changes being reflected automatically in its alternate format. The increased capacity, through use of a GIS, to query combinations of database files and have the results reflected graphically has significant potential for expediting mine subsidence research.

Trona, Na3(CO3)(HCO3) ? 2H20, is mined in quantity from saline facies of the Eocene Green River Formation of southwestern Wyoming. The Green River deposits are the world&apos;s largest known resource of natural sodium carbonates. An estimated 127 billion tons of trona ore are known to occur in beds exceeding 4 ft in thickness (Wiig and others, 1995). Twenty-five trona beds, exceeding 3 ft in thickness, and covering at least 100 mil have been identified. The beds are numbered sequentially in ascending stratigraphic order. Trona beds underlie more than 850 mil (bed 17) and are up to 37 ft thick (bed 1) (Culbertson, 1966). Five underground mines, operating in beds 17, 19, 20, 24, and 25, process trona to produce soda ash (sodium carbonate). A total of 11,837,703 short tons of soda ash were produced from 17.1 million tons of trona ore in 1997 (Kostick and Clark, 1998). A detailed study of trona bed 17, using techniques of petrography and X-ray diffraction, has been undertaken in the Solvay trona mine, near Green River, Wyoming. A continuous, vertical-channel sample was taken from near the production shaft for this study. At this location, bed 17 is 12.6 ft thick and includes several stratigraphic markers that are easily correlated throughout the mine and in surrounding drill cores. Bed 17 in this area averages 90% trona through its entire thickness (Wiig and others, 1995) and 95-100% trona in the lower two-thirds of the bed. Mineral impurities include water-insoluble dolomite, quartz, pyrite, clays, and other minerals and partially water-soluble northupite and shortite. Northupite, Na3Mg(CO3)2C1, contributes to chloride contamination in the soda-ash product and is concentrated in the upper one-third of bed 17, which is left behind as roof rock. Northupite has two modes of occurrence: (1) as bedded strata with dolomite, chert, clay, and shortite and (2) between primary trona crystals in trona spar. Petrographic and mineralogic data indicate that this section of bed 17 was deposited subaqueously during its early and late history and may have undergone periods of deposition in a subaerial or marshy environment. Stratigraphic data indicate that trona accumulated at an annual rate of 2-4 in. per year. During trona deposition, dolomite, CaMg(C03)2, precipitated in parting layers when new water entered the lake, freshening supplies of calcium and magnesium. The lack of clay minerals in the trona facies suggests water input may be by means of springs, as opposed to overland flow. Clay occurrences in thicker dolomitic partings within the trona facies indicate periods of episodic overland flow, possibly resulting from storms in the surrounding basin.

"Three-dimensional geological modelling of coal mines is critical to the sustainable development of the mining industry. On the basis of comprehensively analyzing 3D geological modelling methods, according to the available data of mine such as geological terrain maps, cross-sections and boreholes, we present a 3D modelling method by integrating ArcGIS and 3D GeoModeller. Our motivation is to integrate the advantages of both software modules in processing, converting, integrating and transferring geological information. Special attention has been given to the data structure and processing flow. We build a 3D geological model of the Xieqiao coal mine and successfully extract the geological framework of the strata in the 11118 workface, which is consistent with that of the actual explored geology.Introduction/Background Pertinent impediments such as a lower information degree, the out-of-date information infrastructure and the low level of information management and decision-making make it critical for there to be improvements in mines. Modern exploration technologies favour the construction of digital mine. Digital mine promotes the transformation of the mining industry by integrating information, automation and intelligence to build safe, efficient, high-yield, green and sustainable mines. Three-dimensional geological modelling and visualization of mines are at the core of digital mine. Compared with traditional 2D geological data, 3D models express the various geological phenomena completely, as well as reproduce the spatial distribution of geological units quickly, allowing for the prediction of mining subsidence, better decision-making and improved geological analysis. Modelling methods such as multi-DEM, tetrahedral grid and the generalized tri-prism that are based on borehole estimation and interpolation data are used to construct 3D models of mine geology (Chen 1995,Wang et al 2003, Wu 2004a); nevertheless, these methods cannot fully use multi-source mining data, whereas multi-source integration methods can be used to build 3D models (Kaufmann and Martin 2008, Zhao et al 2009) but require user interaction in model construction and low automation in model updates. During coal production, a plethora of geological data is accumulated. The organisation of discreteinformation under dynamic conditions and the extraction of meaningful information to better service for three-dimensional modelling is a meaningful work (Wu et al 2004b)."

Three rock fracture parameters define three points along empirical cumulative size (of rock fragments) distribution curves at Inspiration copper mine. These parameters are: rock quality designation (RQD), longest piece of intact rock and % of +1 inch. The RQD and the longest piece are actually measured on drill hole cores whereas % of +1 inch is visually estimated on the same cores. These size distribution curves are then utilized in a variety of engineering applications such as; slope instability analysis, blast design, copper recovery prediction from heap leaching, etc. The three rock fracture parameters for two dominant rock types (porphyry and schist) in the pit had to be estimated separately due to different rock fracture characteristics.&apos; Both ordinary kriging (OK) with measured hard data only and soft kriging (SFTK) with hard and soft data were used to estimate each parameter. The cross validation of 100 measured sample values served as the-basis for evaluating the potential benefits of SFTK over OK. Use of subjective information during SFTK required obtaining (prior) probability distributions for all three rock fracture parameters. These distributions were obtained from the typical rock fracture parameters observed in drill hole cores falling inside the geologically interpreted structural domains with varying degrees. of fracture intensity and also through direct mapping along the exposed bench faces. Two different types of soft information were developed for this study; namely, Type "A" and Type "K". The former is based on sample distribution of fracture parameters whereas the latter is based on two step estimation designed to narrow the range of variation observed in data Type "A". The results of the cross validation were analyzed using a linear regression of actual values versus estimated values. The results confirm an improvement on the estimates made by SFTK with hard and. both types of soft data over those produced by OK with hard data only.

A significant amount of energy exists in the waste generated by the coal and timber industries. In the coal industry, the energy loss is mainly due to the discharge of fine coal to the waste impoundment. Despite the fact that the fine coal has the greatest cleaning potential, dewatering, handling and transportation concerns prevent its use as product in many cases. Likewise, the sawdust generated from wood production has energy value and is used as industrial boiler fuel when the transportation distance is relative short. However, wood waste is often discarded into cumbersome landfills due to uneconomical transportation alternatives. Recent research found that these two waste materials can be combined to provide a high energy fuel of around 13000 btu/lb that can be easily handled and transported to end users.

INTRODUCTION The term, chelate, from the Greek for &apos;claw,&apos; has its origin in the pincer-like representation of more than one atom of a single ligand bonded to the same metal atom, forming a ring-like structure. Depending on how many attachments exist on the sphere of coordination around the metal ion, ligands are referred to as bidentate, tridentate, tetradentate, pentadentate and hexadentate According to Calvin and Martell (1952) and Somasundaran and Nagaraj (1984), chelating agents must contain suitable functional groups, and their location within the ligand molecule must enable ring formation that is sterically possible. Typical structures that meet these requirements have been given by Fuerstenau and Herrera-Urbina (1988) and are listed in Figure 1. As noted, the functional groups of these reagents contain electron donor atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur. Basic groups, such as amino (-NH,), are those that contain an atom with a lone pair of electrons. Acid groups are those, such as carboxylic (-COOH) which lose a hydrogen ion and coordinate with the metal atom. Examples of each of these types chelating reagents are given in Tables 1-4. The specificity of chelating agents for various metal ions has long been known and was utilized early in the search for new flotation collectors. In 1927, Vivian used ammonium nitrosophenylhydroxylamine as a collector for cassiterite. Holman (1929) tested dimethylglyoxime as a collector for nickel oxide. He also suggested taurin as a collector for oxidized lead ores. DeWitt and von Batchelder (1939) suggested the use of oximes as flotation collectors. Gutzeit (1946) conducted an extensive investigation on the use of chelating agents as collectors and as depressants for gangue minerals. The Republic of Ghana, located on the West Coast of Africa, is one of the West African countries rich in bauxite deposits. The main occurrences of bauxite deposits are at Sefwi Bekwai in the Western Region, Aya-Nyinahin in the Ashanti Region, Atewa Range near Kibi and at Mount Ejuanema both in the Eastern Region of Ghana. These bauxite deposits belong to the so-called blanket deposits as they are associated with erosion surfaces of old peneplains and occur as cappings on the flat tops of hills or mountains whose heights are generally greater than 600 metres above sea level. These deposits can also be classified as laterite-silicate bauxites since they have been formed under tropical weathering conditions. Genetic and mineralogical investigations have revealed that all bauxite deposits of Ghana are the result of indirect bauxitization processes, for the minerals of the weathering parent rocks have not been transformed directly into gibbsite. In all cases, lithomarge of kaolinitic clay can be recognised. The geology of the major occurrences of bauxite in Ghana shows that the Mount Ejuanema deposit is the only deposit associated with the Voltaian System of rocks. This rock System consists mainly of sandstone, shale, mudstone, conglomerates and pebbly beds. All the otter deposits are associated with the Birimian System of rocks which are made up of metamorphosed lavas,pyroclastic rocks, hypabyssal basic intrusives, phyllites, schists, tuffs and greywackes.

Prediction of acid rock drainage (ARD) for low-sulphide, low-neutralisation potential (LSLNP) mine wastes is methodologically different from that for normal sulphidic mining wastes. In this paper. LSLNP wastes are conveniently defined as those with S2 < 1% and ABA-NP2 < 20 kg CaCO3 eq/t. The distinctiveness of ARD prediction for LSLNP materials originates from their frequently low oxidation rates and is mainly attributable to two reasons. First, the utilisation efficiency of available carbonate neutralisation potential (CNP2) rapidly deteriorates when the sulphide oxidation rate per unit mass of waste drops below a certain level. Reducing the flushing rate of a waste has the same effect as increasing the oxidation rate. Second, silicate neutralisation becomes increasingly important as oxidation rates diminish, and can no longer be ignored in LSLNP materials as it often is for normal sulphidic mine wastes. In this paper, the effects of oxidation rate, pore gas CO2 partial pressure, and flushing rate on ARD prediction for LSLNP materials are theoretically demonstrated with the help of modelling using the computer program MINTEQA2. A new methodology for ARD prediction for LSLNP materials is presented in terms of a prediction procedure. Finally, a case study is given to validate some of theoretical aspects discussed and to illustrate the use of the newly proposed ARD prediction procedure.

The ability to link geological sections on a graphics screen to form three dimensional geology representation was implemented at Kidd Creek in 1987. This technique affords an opportunity to optimize metal estimation in ore at the Kidd Creek copper, zinc and silver mine, by applying enhanced interpretation methods. On a series of geological sections varieties of ore are outlined. These are linked from section to section to form polyhedra which closely simulate the three dimensional shapes of the different ore types referred to as mintypes. The orebodies are divided into zones, referred to as domains, that approximate the function of variograrns, for which&apos; preferential continuity of mineralization has been estimated for distances in the width, strike and dip directions. These distances define ellipsoidal volumes of influence. The domains are also linked into polyhedra. Both types, coded by ore variety and zone, are mapped into the block model. Tonnage and metal values are calculated for ten-foot cubical cells of the block model by any of several estimation methods under domain control. In estimating the metal grades for a cell the predetermined search ellipse is applied to select only those drill hole assays of the same mintype as the cell designation. Once grade estimations have been determined for the cubical cells comprising the model, a wide range of stored information can be viewed. For example, in plan at any row elevation or on vertical section at any azimuth, as either printed values for the cells or as contoured data. This flexibility is of particular value in checking and refining the geological interpretation to better conform to ore types and grades actually mined. Combined with three dimensional geological modelling, and correctly chosen domains, the use of mintypes implants essential geological control into the system and prevents assays for one ore type from affecting grade estimation in adjacent ore types. The three dimensional geological modelling and block model segments provide information which is effectively applied to the stope design, production, planning and control parts of the system.

The Tilden concentrator was originally constructed in 1974 for the processing of low grade hematite. Flotation is a key concentrating process in the operation, and therefore flotation optimization has been a major concern since the plant startup. This paper will discuss some of the modifications made in the process to achieve optimization. The conversion that now enables the plant to process magnetite as well as hematite also will be discussed. INTRODUCTION The Tilden Mine, located in Ishpeming, Michigan, is managed by Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs and two Canadian steel makers. It was constructed and started production in 1974 and expanded in 1979 for processing a low grade, fine-grained hematite iron formation for which there was previously no technology available. Several papers have been written describing the unique character of the concentrating operation. The hematite plant consists of 12 grinding and concentrating lines, which utilize two stages of autogenous grinding with crushing of an intermediate sized product. The ground product is deslimed in a highly dispersed alkaline environment to reject silica. Corn starch, the flocculant, has a high affinity for iron at the operating pH range of 10.5 to 11.0. The ore is upgraded from 35% to 45% iron in the desliming step. The deslime thickener underflow is the feed to flotation. Each flotation line consists of a bank of 10 rougher cells, followed by four scavenging banks incorporating 5, 4, 3, and 3 cells each. The Wemco flotation cells are each 14.1 cubic meters (500 cubic feet) in volume. A total of 12 flotation lines are available. [ ] A reverse flotation process is employed, using a straight-chain, 8 to 10 carbon primary ether amine silica collector. At the levels used in the circuit, the amine also serves as a frother. A final concentrate is produced in the rougher cells. The concentrates from the four scavenging steps are combined and recirculated to the feed end of the roughers, with the fourth scavenger froth being discarded as a final tailing. Upgrading to about 65% iron is achieved, with control of the circuit based on final concentrate silica grade. Starch is again used, this time as a depressant for iron. During the years of operation, several key areas of the flotation process have been targeted for optimization. The most significant improvements have been realized in the following areas: *Grade Control Automation *Control of Water System Chemistry *Flotation Spray Water This paper will focus on these areas, but other minor improvements also will be briefly discussed.

The one-dimensional mathematical model of unsteady-state heat conduction through semi-infinite homogeneous and isotropic airway walls with convective heat and moisture transfer between their wet or dry naked surfaces and mine air with time variable temperature and humidity has been developed on the basis of introduction of acceptable simplifications of description of heat and moisture transfer between rock mass and mine air. The analytical solutions for computation of the temperature distribution and surface temperature of the airway walls and floor and for calculation of water vapour pressure near the wet surfaces at given time are obtained by means of the model presented. The presented solutions are derived for general conditions and they could be easily adapted to the actual ones. Results of the model represent basis for balancing heat and moisture transfer between mine air and its surrounding in deep mines under time variable temperature and humidity of the air and enable us to solve complicated dynamic changes of mine air temperature and humidity in an airway system by relatively simple mathematical tools. INTRODUCTION The importance of unfavourable influences and the costs of condition arrangements increases with mine depth. Precision demands on the methods which predict the environmental condition changes and by which it is possible to optimize condition arragements are still increasing. Environmental conditions in deep mines are determined especially by flow velocity, barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity of mine air. Therefore new and more exact mathematical models of mine air flow through airway system and those of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and individual important sources of heat and moisture are developed. The paper presented deals with description and solution of problems of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls as the rock mass is one of the important heat and moisture sources in deep mines. There are several different approaches to the problem. In some models the moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls is not considered at all. In other models the moisture transfer is described only by certain empirical coefficients. Simultaneous heat and moisture transfer is described seldom. Four numerical models written with the "PFC2D " program were compared against four similar physical models. The numerical models were constrained numerically to closely follow the caving behavior of the physical models. Results from the numerical analyses closely simulated both the granular and blocky behaviors of the physical models, including bridging and interlocking of the simulated orebody during draw. The drawdown patterns and the rate of draw developed during numerical modeling also closely simulated the physical models. The same assumptions and governing parameters used in analyzing the first four models were applied to an additional model. The fifth model employed a completely different, uneven, draw sequence than the other four models, allowing the material to flow in a more granular manner with a demonstrated instability of the undercut sections between each drawpoint opening. Drawdown patterns and behavior of the numerical material of the first four models progressed at uneven and inconsistent rates, similar to those seen in the physical models. By inspection, the overall shape and flow lines of both the numerical and physical models were close in the area removed and in the flow characteristics. The fifth model proved to be the most unstable of all the models tested, with poor correlation to the physical models. The uneven draw sequence, coupled with an additional frictionless wall condition and an added drawpoint, caused the material to flow in a very granular manner. Information generated by this study can be used as a first approach in determining the proper draw rate, drawpoint spacing and undercut thickness for a block-caving operation. Numerical models are often difficult to predict and interpret. However, this study should increase the confidence level for use of the PFC2D program in the future.

Decision-making in exploration deals with experience, knowledge, and sometimes faith, but very often financing and profit, mineral resource aspects, employment, and general political ambitions are parts of the scene. At one end of this spectrum, there is the prospector and his decision on the actual project. The exploration business now expands from its pioneering phase for the benefit of a single company to a wider spectrum which includes the benefit of the large mining consortium and a national development program. Its objectives are also to maintain employment and to favor long-term stability in a mining district or a mining company. The prospector then has new aspects and questions to consider such as, what to do in mining districts where there is a shortage of ore resources but there are still useful investments in mines, processing plants, etc. To analyze the exploration process, therefore, seems to be of great importance in a time of rapidly changing conditions. As in other areas of complex decision-making, for example, in the fields of investments, of production, and of the armed forces, computers most certainly have an important role to play in future exploration decision-making systems. However, we must first analyze our own business as closely as possible to find out what kind of information we need, i.e., why we recommend an exploration program as a good or a poor one. An important part of the debate about exploration is the case study. Case studies on exploration are few and most of those written are only about successful exploration programs. Where are the case studies of the failures and the not so successful programs? Every prospector knows that the majority of exploration projects fail. Consequently, the most important experience seems to be hidden in the failures.
