A finite-difference model using a digital computer was constructed to assist in the water management of a proposed oil-shale mining operation in the Piceance Basin in Colorado. The presence of ground water is both a detriment and a benefit for development of the resource. On one hand, dewatering is required because permeable zones are present in and above the oil-shale sequence, and rich oil shale at the proposed mine is as much as 457 m (1500 ft) below the water table. On the other hand, ground water is the most feasible source of water for processing the oil shale. A ground- water model was constructed to simulate the development of an environmentally acceptable water-management system that will satisfy both the mine-dewatering requirements and the water-supply requirements for processing. The ground-water model discussed in this chapter was constructed for the Rio Blanco Oil Shale Co. (RBOSC) by International Engineering Co., Inc., a subsidiary of Morrison-Knudsen Co. The model was applied to evaluate dewatering and water control systems for several open-pit mining plans initially investigated to develop Federal Lease Tract C-a. A collateral application of the model analyses was to project effects of the proposed dewatering operation on the regional ground-water regime in connection with a permit acquisition program by RBOSC. Subsequently, RBOSC has completely changed its mine development plan and has adopted modeling and related techniques more suitable for study of that plan and dewatering operation. This paper discusses the research results of sulphide ore properties with respects on self-heating and the assessment techniques on mine spontaneous combustion for several mines of sulphide ores in China. A group of experimental devices for testing the chemical behaviour of sulphide minerals, the geological structures, the rate of oxygen absorption, the initial self-heating temperature, and the ignition point of ore samples, etc. are also described in detail. These methods have been proved to be effective by several sulphide mines which all have the history of spontaneous combustion of sulphide ores. INTRODUCTION A fire disaster from the spontaneous combustion of sulphide ores in a mine can produce large quantities of toxic gases and heat to pollute the working environment, lead to large economic losses and loss of human life, and even compell the mine to be closed. Some mines of copper, lead, zinc, tin and iron in China are of high content of sulphur. It is of great importance to evaluate the potential of spontaneous combustion of sulphide ores before beginning to design and mine the ore deposits. At present, the mechanism of spontaneous combustion accepted commonly is that sulphide ores undergo slow oxidation on exposure to moisture air at ambient temperature, with the evolution of heat, gases and moisture. The heat generated, if not dissipated, gives rise to an increase in the temperature of the sulphide ores. As the temperature of the sulphide ores rises, the rate of oxidation increases. If this is allowed to proceed unchecked it can eventually result in the ignition of the sulphide ores. For pyrite (FeS2), it reacts with oxygen and water according to the following equations.

Southern Oklahoma (including the Arbuckle Mountains) has outcrops of rocks representing Precambrian, Paleozoic, and Cretaceous ages. Thus, rocks of every geologic age in the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Eras, except the Jurassic and Triassic Periods, are present in south-central Oklahoma. With rocks of such an enormous age range present in a relatively small geographic area, it is little wonder that a wide variety of economic rock and mineral resources are locally present. This report will describe the occurrence, mining, processing, and end-uses (dictated by chemical and physical properties) of the Precambrian Troy Granite, the Cambrian Royer Dolomite and Fort Sill Limestone, Ordovician silica sands of the Simpson Group, Ordovician limestones of the Viola Springs and Welling Formations, and Ordovician Sylvan Shale. In general, the more the end-use depends upon chemical composition and purity, the greater the price that can be demanded for such-minerals. The not-so-successful attempts to mine zinc, manganese, copper, and iron from the Arbuckle Mountains also will be discussed briefly, and I will provide a sermonette on analytical chemistry and its usefulness to corporate CEOs. I may be one of the few persons at this Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals who is not a professional geologist. I am an analytical chemist specializing in geochemistry. In particular, I investigate trace elements in rocks and their consequences in industrial processes. As such, I have consulted to the mining industry (and their clients) for two decades, always with the intent of improving service and product quality.

Anomalous geologic or stress conditions ahead of a longwall face have the potential of causing great harm to both the individual miner and the mining operation as a whole. NSA Engineering has been developing seismic tomography techniques to image the panel ahead of the face. This paper presents the results of afield effort in which a 60-m (200-ft) segment of a longwall panel containing a fault zone was surveyed daily as the face approached. Stress distribution, geologic structure and dynamic elastic properties within the panel were plotted and compared to static laboratory measurements. The surveys successfully imaged an anomalous stress concentration that was likely influenced by the presence of the fault zone. The calculated dynamic physical properties generally agreed with the laboratory measurements.

A really extensive acid sulfate-altered and mineralized rock in the southeast Red Mountains area is noted for its association with naturally occurring and mine-related acidic and metal-rich waters. Integrated geologic and aqueous geochemical studies demonstrate that the degree of metal mobilization and acid production in natural waters correlates well with the type of hydrothermally altered rock and structural features in which these water interact. Quartz-sericite-pyrite, quartz-alunite, and argillic alteration assemblages are associated with some of the most naturally acidic, high-metal waters in the study area; calcite-bearing propylitic rocks are related to the most pristine waters and buffer sulfate-rich, acidic waters produced by pyrite oxidation. Trace metals in natural waters are mostly derived from enargite, zinc-rich tetrahedrite and sphalerite. Pyrite oxidation contributes very little with respect to base-metals in these natural waters.

Silicon nitride (Si3N4 ) is an advanced structural ceramic materia1 which is presently being considered for a number of potential engineering applications, particularly in heat engines, gas turbines, and electronics. With respect to other structural ceramics, silicon nitride has relatively low thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficients and a moderate elastic modulus. Thus, during thermal cycling the stresses developed in this material are lower than in other structural ceramics. At the present time silicon nitride is produced via three main processes: thermal decomposition of silicon imide or amide, treatment of silicon tetrachloride or silane vapour with ammonia and nitriding of silicon powder. These three methods of production are discussed with particular attention to the effect of morphology and phase content on the properties of the final product. In this work carbothermal production of silicon nitride has been studied in a high temperature resistance furnace. Compacted briquettes of silica and carbon were produced which were reacted in a nitrogen atmosphere. The optimum reaction temperature and the carbon to silica ratio were found to be 1425OC and ten to one, respectively. The presence of large amounts of ash in the reductant promoted the formation of silicon nitride. The specific surface area of the briquettes did not have a large effect over the range studied in the present work. Briquette seeding with small amounts of Si3N4 was effective in increasing the reaction rates.

High-purity gypsum of Permian age crops out in three major gypsum districts of western Oklahoma. The northwest and southwest districts have important reserves in the Blaine Formation, whereas reserves of the west-central district are in the Cloud Chief Formation. Gypsum beds of the Blaine Formation typically are 10 to 30 feet thick, 95 to 99 percent pure, and interbedded with shales that are 2 to 30 feet thick. The base of the Cloud Chief Formation consists of a massive bed of gypsum that typically is 20 to 100 feet thick and is 92 to 97 percent pure. Anhydrite is present in the sulfate beds, beneath 20 to 100 feet of overburden, at a number of places in all three districts. Total gypsum reserves in the three districts are estimated at 48 billion short tons. These reserves are well suited for open-pit mining or quarrying, because gypsum typically forms hills in the semiarid climate of western Oklahoma, and the gypsum layers are nearly flat lying, without folds or faults. Seven companies currently mine a total of 1.0 to 1.4 million tons of Oklahoma gypsum each year for wallboard, for plaster, as a retarder in portland cement, and as a soil conditioner.

In early June, 1986, a fire of unknown origin erupted in one of several main entries of a coal mine located in southwestern Colorado. The fire was aggressively fought with high- expansion foam. As a result of several strategic decisions, the fire appeared to be held in check. Unfortunately, sufficient quantities of foam were unavailable and as soon as the foam was depleted, control of the fire was lost. To prevent further damage and the possibility of an explosion, all entries to the mine were sealed. This paper recounts activities from the discovery of the fire to the initial reentry of the sealed mine including location of the fire, the decisions made to best combat it, and the steps taken to rapidly and securely seal the mine when this became necessary. The mine operator requested the Bureau's assistance in obtaining and analyzing mine fire gases taken from sampling ports placed through the mine seals. This report describes how samples were taken and what gases were analyzed. In addition, this work describes the initial exploration of the sealed mine by personnel using oxygen breathing apparatus.

The development of the uranium mining industry in Romania started in 1950. The exploitation of Bihor region, one of the most important metallogenic zones of the country, began in 1962. Uranium exploitation activities were ceased in 1995 due to the exhaustion of the ore deposits. Between 2001 and 2002, due to the entire mining zone closure, ecological rehabilitation and decommissioning was initiated. The proposed solutions, concerning terrain, equipment and buildings utilization were elaborated according to the guidelines of the Romanian Environmental and Nuclear Authority.

INTRODUCTION The report of the workshop on Alternate Energy Strategies estimated that the world's reserve of uranium oxide is about 700,000 tonnes. In order to extract these reserves, it is estimated that between 100 and 200 million tonnes of solid waste and of the order of 1 billion cubic meters of liquid waste will be generated. In addition, radium within tailing will continue to generate radon gas as it decays for many years after closure. Hence, the handling, storage and possible use of uranium mine waste is a matter which deserves serious consideration and planning. Since the properties of the waste will largely dictate the method of handling and storage or use of the waste, the properties of the waste should be determined, to the degree possible, prior to the design and subsequent operation of the mine. Uranium mine waste has both solid and fluid constituents. The solids include soil and rock removed during site preparation, similar material removed during development of the mine and uranium tailing generated by the mill. Soils can be stockpiled for reuse during reclamation or used as earth materials for construction of fills, roads, dams and soil linings. Rock can be stockpiled, used as mine backfill or can be used for earth construction in fills, roads and dams. The tailing is usually placed in a tailing storage area. The fluid constituents are both liquid and gaseous. The liquid waste is generally composed of the mill water; however, additional waste water can be generated by dewatering processes and diversion of surface runoff. The gaseous constituent of the uranium mine waste is radon generated by the radioactive decay of radium in the ore tailing. DEFINITION OF PROPERTIES The following presents a brief definition of some of the more important properties discussed later. The definitions are not intended to be comprehensive, but are useful as a basis for understanding.

Lamproite occurs in two locations in southeastern Kansas that are in close proximity to each other. In both locations, the lamproite is restricted to north- east-elongated, ellipsoidal depressions measuring about 3 mi by 1.5 mi. At the surface and in the shallow subsurface, lamproite occurs as sills that were intruded into Middle and Upper Pennsylvanian rocks consisting of shale, limestone, and minor sandstone. Isotopic age determinations by Zartman and others (1967) indicate that the lamproite was intruded during the Late Cretaceous (88-91 my). Drillholes for hydrocarbon exploration down to a depth of about 1,400 ft (top of the Mississippian) and numerous shallow drillholes (mostly 200-300 ft) by the Kansas Geological Survey in the northern portion of Silver City dome helped to understand the structural complexity and extent of the near-surface sills. Numerous radial faults showing small apparent vertical offsets limit the lateral continuation of individual sills. Concentric faults are believed to mark the edge of the depression. Wagner (1954) mapped the geology of Silver City dome in considerable detail and recognized a northward dipping, 120-ft-thick, lamproite sill exposed at the surface along the northeastern edge of the dome. The upper 40-50 ft of the sill weathers olive-brown and has a soft, clayey consistency in which only the phlogopite mica is recognizable. The weathered material has been mined by Micro-Lite LLC since 1982 from the exposed sill in an open-pit that measures about half a mile extending in an east- west direction. The bulk of the material, about 98%, is used as an additive in mineral supplements for cattle feed.

INTRODUCTION The Milwaukee, Wisconsin Metropolitan Area provides an ideal opportunity to review the advancement of the art and science of mixed face tunneling in the past 65 years. Although there were earlier tunnel projects in the Milwaukee area, by other agencies, the majority of those driven in the Twentieth Century have been done under contract with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District through the agency of the Sewerage Commission of the City of Milwaukee and the Metropolitan Sewerage Commission of the County of Milwaukee. Legal Description of District The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District was created by the Wisconsin Legislature in 1921 together with the Metropolitan Sewerage Commission of the County of Milwaukee. This concept of subregional wastewater control was an outgrowth of an investigation and report from a commission appointed by the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee in 1909 to study final sewage disposal for the City. In 1911 that Commission, comprised of J. W. Alvord, George C. Whipple and Harrison P. Eddy, recommended that the City construct a water filtration plant, construct a Menomonee River flushing works, expand the intercepting sewer system and, after a thorough study of the then existing and developing methods of sewage treatment, construct a sewage treatment plant. In response to those recommendations, the Wisconsin Legislature, in Chapter 608 of the Laws of 1913, created the Sewerage Commission of the City of Milwaukee. The objective of this study is to classify ore and waste in a selected mine. The support vector machine, was used for the classification purpose, is applied to a zinc ore body in a skarn deposit located in the central region of the Peruvian Andes. The input parameters used for the model are spatial coordinates and the lithological information of the ore body. The input data was divided into training and testing data sets and the performance of the model was tested using the testing data set. The results show that more than 76% of the data could be properly classified by this method. The ore waste maps of the deposit was then developed using SVM model. From the result it was observed that a comparatively very few number of cells classified as ore. The ore is concentrated in small lodes at the middle of the volume of study, and not uniformly distributed throughout the study area. The lithological map of the deposit was also constructed as it was used as an input parameter for the SVM model. The indicator kriging was used for generation of lithological map of the ore body. Mineral exploration is a sequential information gathering process. Primary exploration programs filter favorable areas through a series of geological, geochemical, and geophysical tests resulting in the discovery of mineral occurrences. The most favorable of these discoveries provides economic justification for a delineation drilling program. The purpose of delineation drilling is to provide information for estimating relevant physical characteristics of the mineral occurrence. These estimates are used to evaluate the exploration project and, eventually, the economics of mine development. Delineation drilling normally completes the exploration process. If the assessed economic characteristics of the delineated occurrence provide justification for mine development and production, an economic mineral deposit is the end result of the exploration process. Subsequently, a development drilling program is initiated to obtain the necessary data for detailed mine planning. The delineation drilling stage is in itself a sequential investment process. As delineation information accumulates, the reliability of geological estimates is improved and, thus, the uncertainty associated with the assessment of profitability criteria is reduced. Delineation drilling should continue as long as the marginal benefits, which result from improving the reliability of profitability criteria, exceed the marginal costs associated with the additional drilling.

A multi-lift benching cut-and-fill mining method was adopted at Asamera Minerals (U. S.), Inc.'s Cannon Mine to balance the goals of high productivity and near 100 percent recovery with the need to minimize subsidence. High strength backfill was required to provide effective long-term overburden support and safe working conditions during the pillar recovery operations. Operational designs were evaluated using numerical modeling to predict global mine stability and backfill strength requirements. These models incorporated sequential mining of primary stopes, backfilling of primary stopes and recovery of pillars, and have been transferred to the mine operations group for use in evaluating different production sequences. The modeling has provided a better understanding of the structural response of the mine to excavation of the primary stopes and removal of the pillars. Predictions about the transfer of overburden weight to the abutments, pillars and cemented fill pillars have provided a criterion to evaluate mining plans and production sequence. Comparison of these predictions with actual mine structural performance has developed confidence in the design of the mining method and in the geomechanical design methods being employed. Primary mining of the B-North zone is nearly complete, and the stopes have been generally stable, as projected in the original design. The friction factor is one of the more difficult parameters to determine in ventilation planning. In practice, this can be estimated from published factors such as those of McElroy. The problem with this approach is that the selection requires some judgement, and the estimated values offer no more than guideline accuracy. This study, examines the effects of four factors on the coefficient of friction for a simulated mine airway. The factors are: airway cross-section, asperity height, flow direction, and cross-cut spacing. The study includes the modeling of a mine airway and the evaluation of the results from 13 experiments on flows of air over rough surfaces. The model, physically represented by a wind tunnel, includes a rough surface section which can be modified to simulate mine airways of various shape and asperity height. Most of the experiments were performed under controlled flow conditions during which the Reynolds number was varied between 50,000 and 300,0000. Based on this study, the friction factor for a mine opening was found to depend not only on the size and shape of the surface asperities but is also affected by the orientation of them in relation to the flow direction.

Spinel ferrites, like NiFe2-2x Znx Ti4 O4 Fe CO1.5 Ge0.5 Tix O4, Ga1-x Fex Ni CO O4, Nil-x Fex Mn2 O4 have been prepared using the respective metal oxides in Stoichiometric quantities, by the ceramic method. The oxides were homogenized in acetone medium, pelletifed by using poly vinyl acetate as the binder. They were fired at 1000°C for 100 hours for compound formation. Chalcogenide spinels such as Zn1-x Cux Cr2 Se4 where 0=x=l and Cu1-x Fex Cr2 Se4 where 0=x=0.3 have been prepared by using 99.99% pure elements and then fired at 1000°C in quartz ampoules under vacuum conditions. X-ray diffraction studies of these compounds indicated a single cubic spinel phase. DC resistivity studies of the compounds were taken between 300-700K using LCR bridge by two probe technique. Thermo-electric power measurements were taken between 300-500K for all the compounds. Initial susceptibility studies have been carried out using a low field (0.506) and from which the nature of magnetic dimains and Curie temperatures were determined. Magnetic hysteresis measurements were carried out at 300K and at 80K, using alternating current hysteresis loop tracer, at 2K02 field. Mossbauer spectral measurements were carried out using Co57 source embedded in a copper matrix and an absorber containing 0.3 mg/cm2 of the sample. The spectra has been fitted by Mossfit Program. The catalytic effect of the spinel ferrites NiFe2-2x Znx Tix O4 where 0=x=1 has been studied by using the model reaction of decomposition of H2O2 at temperatures from 40°C to 70°C. It was found that the spinel oxides were found to possess poor catalytic activity.

Available literature on the effect of re-entrainment on overall airborne dust concentration in mine airways or the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust re-entrainment in mine atmosphere is scant (Shankar and Ramani, 1991). Therefore, as part of the Respirable Dust Center's ongoing research, the following three-part study was undertaken: •a study of the re-entrainment phenomena of anthracite and bituminous coal dust particles in a wind tunnel under the influence of varying air velocities; •a study of the same in the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the USBM with both air flow and walking by personnel causing re-entrainment; and •the mathematical modeling and computer simulation of the re-entrainment phenomenon. In this paper, results from the re-entrainment studies in the wind tunnel and the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine are presented. Comparing the results from the two studies, it was observed that increasing the air velocity increased the rate of re-entrainment (Shankar and Ramani, 1994a) and the rate of re-entrainment decreased with the time of exposure of the source dust to the flowing air. In addition, when the source dust was composed of particles of different sizes, the airborne dust concentrations due to re-entrainment were higher than when the source dust was composed of particles of the same size. The contribution of airborne dust concentration due to airflow was negligible compared to the contribution due to walking.

Foreword Sir William Halcrow and Partners are responsible for the design of the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel as Sub-contractor to the Contractor, Osmac, a joint venture formed by the Arab Contractors, Osman Ahmed Osman and Company of Cairo, and Tarmac International of London. Throughout the paper the term "Client" refers to the Employer, the Ministry of Housing and Reconstruction, which latterly became the Ministry of Development and New Communities of the Arab Republic of Egypt. At the time of writing of this paper only a few hundred metres of the tunnel have been driven, but the design is substantially complete. Introduction The Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, which is at present under construction, will be a two-lane tunnel crossing beneath the Suez Canal approximately 15 km north of the town of Suez at El Shallufa. It will become the first permanent connection across the Canal since 1967 and is visualised by the Egyptian Government as an early step in the development of the Sinai Desert along the eastern bank. The tunnel will carry pipelines for treated water and electric power cables to assist in this development. The tunnel, which will be 1640 m in length, is being driven through hard clay and mudstone using a tunnel shield fitted with hydraulic excavators. The primary lining is being constructed with precast, bolted reinforced concrete segments with an internal diameter of 10.4 m. The road deck structure and the walls of the air supply ducts beneath it are formed with precast, reinforced concrete units erected immediately behind the shield.

The technology applied to shaft sinking has lagged far behind other construction activities. While surface oriented construction and mining have made great strides with new processes and equipment, the majority of shafts sunk currently still follow a drill, blast and muck-out cycle developed in the 16th century. Today, in 1979, the shaft sinking industry is in the midst of its own private industrial revolution. Millions of dollars are being spent annually by industry and government alike to spring the art of shaft sinking into the 20th century. The objective of this paper is to review a few of the newest mechanized schemes for shaft sinking. This is not a theoretical review, however, but a practical one, and deals only with hardware and projects which are currently on jobsites. Figure 1 shows the equipment. On the left is the 241SB 184, a 24 foot diameter blind shaft borer. This machine is currently at about 200 feet, constructing a coal mine shaft in Alabama. It is built and utilized in a manner similar to a tunnel borer. In the upper center is the 1211SR, a 12 foot diameter blind shaft reamer. This machine follows a 6 foot pre-drilled blind pilot hole, and is at work in Chicago. On the upper right is the 121BR, a powerful new blind drill. Just below it is the conical drill head for the 121BR which can utilize either carbide or standard disc cutters. At the center bottom is an expandable back reaming head which can be used to enlarge a drilled shaft up to a maximum of 16 feet diameter, or can be used to produce a shaft having several diameter changes. This equipment is also in use in Chicago.
