Introduction Synthetic soda ash production began to decline in the late 1930s. This was due to high operating costs and waste disposal problems. Since soda ash was used as a major component in manufacturing glass, an alternate method of producing that chemical was necessary. A process to produce soda ash from trona was developed by FMC Wyoming Corp.'s predecessor, as well as an economical way to obtain trona. Existing trona operations are located about 40 km (25 miles) west of Green River, WY. Five operators presently mine trona in this area. FMC's property has 153 km2 (59 sq miles) leased. Its eight shafts reach 488 m (1600 ft) deep to the uniform trona deposit. The seam ranges in thickness from 2.4 to 3.6 m (8 to 12 ft). History Egyptian tombs, dating from 4000 to 3000 BC, contained mummies preserved by an embalming process using soda ash. For many years, soda ash was produced by burning marine plants, then dissolving the soluble material (sodium carbonate) from the ashes. The name soda ash is derived from this method of production. In 1791, Nicola LeBlanc developed black ash, or salt cake, from salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. This process remained in use until 1863, when Ernest Solvay developed a method for producing soda ash from salt, coke, and limestone with ammonia as a catalyst. This Solvay process was widely used. And, in the 1930s, there were 17 plants in the US alone. High plant operating costs and waste disposal problems, however, necessitated finding an alternative to the Solvay process.

Ground pillar control in soil and weak rock often represents a critical and sometimes a determining factor for mined underground civil structures. A concept is desirable that minimizes the restrictions possibly imposed by pillar control requirements on geometrical tunnel characteristics and on the mining operation itself. Conventional concepts are discussed and an alternative concept is introduced. This concept reduces pillar control requirements to ground control measures required with "regular" tunnels. The conventional model of pillar mechanics with potential yielding of a ground body in more than one direction, is then avoided. Due to the complexity of pillar mechanics, the level of engineered design furnished to the contractor is crucial to optimizing ground pillar control. Conventional versus alternative contractual arrangements for pillar control are described and their important role is illustrated. The concept introduced relates to principles inherent to the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). However, tunnel projects using other mining concepts can employ alternative ground pillar control principles as well, if certain criteria are observed. Case histories in the United States and abroad are presented and the impacts from different concepts of ground pillar control are illustrated. The paper concludes by analyzing concept characteristics that can infer monetary impacts on both the owner and the contractor.

In recent years planning of surface mines in general and reclamation and post-mining land uses in particular have become very complex. Due to the lack of suitable techniques, land use plans are rarely based upon structured decisions. Data collection may be conducted in a rigorous manner and certain analyses may be performed on the data; the decision to put the land to a specific use, however, is finally based upon the intuitive judgment of one or several individuals. This paper demonstrates how techniques from fuzzy set theory can be used in order to select an optimum post-mining land use plan. The various land use planning alternatives have been characterized according to both qualitative information and quantitative factors and the "fuzzy" aspects of the collected information are incorporated into the analyses. In a practical application, the methodology is used to obtain the most reasonable solution to a post-mining land use planning problem in Interior Alaska.

Sustainable development is defined as ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’1 There has been considerable debate of late between environmentalists and mining operators concerning the current regulation and operation of mountaintop mining. To those not familiar with the practice, it essentially applies an area mining method to a mountaintop, removing all overburden above coal seams, resulting in full recovery of the resource with the excess or swell spoil material - (rock and dirt) being deposited in engineered fills in hollows to the side (known as hollow fills or valley fills - very similar to highway fills). Because most of the dialogue has been adversarial and mining’s response is perceived to be primarily reactive instead of proactive, a rift in communication and value systems between the two sides has widened. Since 1999, the global mining community has been concerned that there is a disconnect between mining practices and the values of today’s society.3 Working through the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) was created to review mining practices in a project entitled Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) driven by the following four goals:

The need for geological control in orebody estimation and modelling is self- evident to geologists and mining engineers engaged in practical day-to-day estimation. It is only fairly recently, however, that attempts have been made to incorporate explicitly such requirements into published accounts of geostatistical estimation; see, for example, Dowd and Scott (1982, 19841, Rendu and Readdy (1982), Dagbert et al. (1984), Dowd (1984), Benest and Winter (1984). In practice, many geological controls in automatic or semi-automatic estimation and modelling are essentially geometrical controls. The aim of this paper is to present two techniques for geological/geometrical control. Whilst the applications are new, neither technique is entirely original and both have been adapted from other fields and sources. Both techniques are, in some sense, types of estimators and/or interpolators of shapes. The first is a method for fitting spline surfaces to control orebody boundary estimation and to unroll orebodies. The second is an application of Minkowski addition to interpolate shapes such as orebody outlines or stope boundaries and to control estimations.

Acidophilic bacteria are well known for their role in accelerating the oxidative dissolution of sulfide minds, such as pyrite. Other acidophiles, however, are able to catalyze dissimilatory reductive reactions. Bacteria that reduce ferric iron to ferrous, and sulfate to sulfide, were isolated from ARD-impacted environments and immobilised onto porous beads made of recycled glass. Column bioreactors containing colonized beads were constructed and peacolated with synthetic and actual ARD, and evaluated for their capacities to promote iron or sulfate reduction, and pH amelioration. Iron reduction did not require strictly anoxic conditions in bioreactors, and rates of up to 800 mg Fe3+ reduced/(l*day) were achieved, with a conversion efficiency of up to 98%. Using mixed populations of acidophilic fungi and iron-reducing bacteria, the bioreactors were capable of promoting iron reduction using paper pulp as sole carbon and energy source. Reduction of sulfate in pack bed bioreactors was observed with acidic wastewaters of pH 3 and above, though average rates of 300 mg sulfate reduced/(l*/day) were less than those recorded for circum-neutral pH systems. Bioremediation of ferric iron-rich ARD was assessed using coupled iron-reducing and sulfate reducing bioreactors.

The study area is located in the Alpine-Himalayan zone in Turkey. Geologically, this is a very complicated region, and the rock units generally are divided into two groups as either allochthonous and autochthonous. Tectono-stratigraphically, the units are Paleozoic quartzite, black limestone, arkosic sandstone, interlaminated radiolarite and Triassic limestone, thick Jurassic limestone, detritic limestone with alternating Eocene Nummulites beds and cream-green marl, Miocene siltstone, and ophiolite. Trachyte, trachyandesite, feldspathoidal trachyandesite porphyry, tuff, and pumice formed by volcanism during the Plio-Quaternary also are present. Recent alluvium and slope detritus locally cover all the other rock units. A number of sulfur outcrops occur in the area. Among them are outcrops at Keciborlu, Yelliyatak Hill, Buyuk, and Kucuk Kukurt Dere. The most important sulfur deposits are found in volcanic tuff and siltstone-marl, and they include highly organic material. Sulfur may accumulate around recent gas diffusions and also as massive formations. The information about local geology and sulfur isotopes shows that the sulfur originated From the crust and probably comes from organic-rich Paleozoic and Triassic units. The sulfur did not move between Triassic and Pliocene time. However. Plio-Quaternary volcanism did cause movement of the sulfur, and this was followed by formation of the secondary sulfur due to post-tectonic thermal activities and the mixing of other surface waters.

Hargett Dear Dr. Hanna: As discussed in our phone conversation, we are enclosing a suggested revision to the paper, "Application of Bentonitic Clays in Suspension Fertilizer Formulations," published in MINERAL & METALLURGICAL PROCESSING, May 1990. The revision will replace the second paragraph in the article. The reason for the revision is that suspensions have decreased in market share since 1984 and at present comprise an estimated 25% to 30% of fluid mixtures. This represents 6% to 7% of all fluids and only 2% to 3% percent of all fertilizers. Based on national surveys conducted by the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials (AAPFCO), suspensions comprised an estimated 25% of all fluid mixtures in 1974, 33% in 1976, 35% in 1980, 40% in 1984, and 36% in 1988. Revision to "Application of Bentonitic Clays in Suspension Fertilizer Formulations." Suspension fertilizers are an important segment of the fertilizer industry in the United States. Suspensions allow higher concentrations of nutrients (N, P2O5, K2O) than clear liquid solution fertilizers. K20 content of solutions is limited to about 10%, while suspensions can contain more than 30% K2O. Suspensions can tolerate greater variations in temperature than solutions. In suspensions, if crystallization occurs, the crystals can remain suspended in a clay jell instead of settling as they would in solutions. Solubility is not a limiting factor in suspensions, since complete solubility of phosphate is not required. This allows a wider range of phosphate materials to be used. Also, materials commonly used in formulating suspensions are less expensive and more widely available than those for clear liquids (Getsiner et al., 1984).

The leaching and bulk decomposition of sulfide minerals is of enormous commercial importance in several areas of the minerals industry. These include: direct leaching of ores or concentrates for the recovery of the contained metal values; decomposition of sulfides to recover associated values such as encapsulated gold; and the potentially hazardous oxidation of sulfides in waste disposal facilities. A significant challenge to successful future developments in these areas is to improve our fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of the chemical, electrochemical, and bacterially-mediated interactions between sulfides and aqueous solutions. The paper summarizes current understanding of these mechanisms, and discusses promising new directions for research.

A feasibility seismic refraction and reflection field survey was conducted at the U. S. Borax Company open-pit mine, Boron, California by the writers during the weekend of March 13 and 14, 1976. This field survey was carried out as a preliminary investigation primarily for the purpose of evaluating and establishing the ability of such geophysical techniques to locate and outline the subsurface openings of the old room-and-pillar mining under the present open-pit. The value of such knowledge about the old underground workings is directly related to the safe and economical operation of the open-pit mine for the company. Although mine maps of the old underground workings are available at the mine, the extent of roof and wall cavings and the present condition of the old underground openings are unknown. Owen and Suhler (2) are the first investigators who used electromagnetic methods, Pulse-Echo System, and electric resistivity measurement to solve the problem without success. A few years later, Herzig and Owen (1) attempted to solve the problem with application of earth resistivity measurement method with unfavorable results. The U. S. Borax Company carried out an extensive study for slope failure problems of the open-pit with application of dipmeter measurements. However, the slope stability study was not correlated to the old underground openings lying under the present open-pit (3).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines examined bleederless ventilation practices to evaluate their use as a spontaneous combustion control measure in U. S. coal mines. Results indicate that restricting airflow into mined-out areas (bleederless ventilation) is recognized worldwide as a spontaneous combustion control measure. However, ventilation practices commonly used to limit airflow to mined-out areas are not easily applicable to United States mining conditions, systems, experience and regulations. The types of bleederless ventilation systems used throughout the world and the spontaneous combustion risks associated with these systems are discussed. Primary design considerations for bleederless ventilation consist of the interaction of ventilation practices, methane drainage, ground control, seal construction and mine monitoring. Technological improvements needed for U.S. application of bleededess ventilation are also discussed.

Electrothermal production of elemental phosphorous (P4) generates substantial amounts of highly toxic phossy water and sludges. Because of their high phosphorous contents and lack of reliable processing technology, large tonnages of these hazardous wastes have accumulated from current and past operations. To date, the sludges are stored in ponds or above ground in special containment vessels at various locations around the country. Two samples of electric furnace phosphorous sludge (obtained from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Muscle Shoals, AL and FMC Corporation in Pocatello, ID) were investigated using physical separation techniques to recover the elemental phosphorous and to render the residual material nonhazardous. The techniques tested include sizing, froth flotation and dispersed air oxidation. Flotation and sizing produced concentrates containing 69% - 90%P4, with recovery in the range of 60% - 87%. Dispersed air oxidation of the fines and tailings products was effective in the removal of an additional 10% - 15% of the P4 in the sludge.

In mid-1975, the United States Borax & Chemical Corp., a member of the RTZ group, engaged Computing Associates, Inc. (CAI) in a continuing project to model their operating property at Boron, CA, with the goal of computerized assistance in medium- and long-range open-pit mine planning. Their property, 161 km (100 miles) northeast of Los Angeles, is the largest producer of borate minerals in the world. Because of unusual geological complexity, this unique deposit presents interesting problems in computer modeling, compared with the coal, uranium, and other metallic deposits with which CAI ordinary deals. Mine planning for Boron has historically been based on manually plotted contour plan maps and cross sections, with geological reserves derived from manual triangularization of the drilling pattern. Standardization and reproducibility of log interpretation, contouring, and reserve calculation were principal goals of using the computer. Additionally, it was desired to shorten both the time and cost of a planning cycle, while at least equalling the accuracy of the manual planning. The present recovery plant processes only water-soluble borates; at some time in the future it will be necessary to recover acid-soluble borate minerals as well. With computer assistance the economics of this changeover point can be more thoroughly evaluated.

One of the major criterion of any mechanised tunnelling operation is to minimize downtime of the tunnelling machine by employing the most efficient muck handling system space and economic factors permit. A tunnelling machine which remains idle during a large percentage of the available shift working time is a luxury no contractor can afford. There are several possible reasons for non-productivity of a tunnelling machine ... the inability of the muck handling system to keep pace with the tunnelling machine on a continuous basis is one major cause. In large diameter tunnels, where several trains or more than one muck hauling unit can operate simultaneously, downtime of the tunnelling machine may be kept to an acceptable level. On small to medium diameter tunnels, 8 feet to 14 feet in diameter, the muck removal support system is normally restricted in capacity, resulting in an excessive tunnelling machine downtime as the tunnel extends from the shaft. There is a need for an efficient, continuous and economical muck removal system for small to medium size tunnels being driven by a hard rock machine. This paper is intended to provide an insite into pneumatic conveying, and explain the Radmark System; its development and utilisation in the tunnelling and mining fields. Now that the former Soviet Union has divided into 15 countries, it is necessary to analyze separately the industrial mineral position of each of these countries. Industrial mineral data The former USSR was one of the world's largest producers of industrial minerals and had some of the world's largest reserves. Production and reserve figures, however, must be qualified. Even when these figures were reported by the Soviets, it was not clear that the production figures were for products that would be equally marketable in a competitive market economy. The reserve figures are based on the Soviet system of reserve classification, which is not directly equatable with the US Geological Survey and US Bureau of Mines classifications of economic reserves in market economy countries. The Soviets reserve classification system, in terms of which reserve figures will be given, is based on the reliability of the quantity of the material in place. The Soviet system assigns each occurrence to one of seven categories A, B, C1 and C2 are considered reserves; P1, P2, and P3 are considered resources. Mining in the former Soviet Union was authorized on the basis of the reserves in place in categories A, B and C, which had to be in prescribed ratios. However, the categories A, B and C do not necessarily correspond to Western concepts of material economically exploitable under present market prices with existing technologies.

Philip M. Hocker is president of the Mineral Policy Center (MPC), a Washington, DC-based, non-profit organization formed to "address the environmental problems that are caused by mineral development in both the hard-rock mining and onshore oil arenas." Hocker has been involved with resource development and environmental policy issues since the 1970s. He has been a plaintiff in several lawsuits regarding environmental management of federal onshore oil and gas leasing. He was also active in the 1987 campaign to pass the Federal Onshore Oil and Gas Leasing Reform Act. Hocker served on the board of directors of the Sierra Club from 1980 through 1986. He is also a member of SME and spoke at the welcoming luncheon and keynote session of the SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit, Feb. 14, 1994, in Albuquerque, NM. In his role as president of MPC, Hocker has become a major player in the ongoing battle concerning mining law reform. And, while the mining law issue is the most visible and controversial issue confronting the mining industry and MPC, Hocker's organization is also active in clean water reform and other public policy issues that concern natural resource development and the environment. Hocker and MPC invoke a wide spectrum of reactions from the mining industry, most of it negative. Even so, the editors of ME decided that SME members should hear from Hocker his views on domestic mining, including mining law reform, clean water legislation and other environmental issues facing the industry.

Analysis of discontinuous rock masses for engineering design purposes requires information about fracture characteristics. For such studies, fractures or other elements of the rock fabric (bedding, foliation, etc.) should be considered in a statistical manner because they generally have high frequencies of occurrence and are discontinuous over the design area. A practical design procedure includes defining structural domains as those areas which contain fractures with similar orientation patterns. Within a structural domain, the statistical distributions of fracture set characteristics (spacing, fracture density, dip, dip direction, etc.) may be computed from mapped data and then used to quantitatively describe the rock fabric. These distributions can then be randomly sampled (using Monte Carlo techniques) to simulate the rock fabric and to help define potential failure surfaces along fractures. 1 The prediction of failure geometries is an essential part of stability analyses used in designing rock slopes or underground openings. In current probabilistic design procedures, Monte Carlo techniques that rely upon the iterative generation and analysis of deterministic instability models do not incorporate spatial aspects of the random variation in fracture set characteristics, 1,2 but consider the characteristics to be spatially independent.

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, long-wall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air to control respirable dust and methane gas. As a result, air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high-velocities, especially during shield advance as dust falls from the shield canopy directly into theair stream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation by shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH in a wind tunnel designed to study dust entrainment in high-velocity airstreams. Dust was introduced into the tunnel to determine dust concentration as it relates to entrainment, dilution, air velocity, and particle adhesion. Airborne dust samples were obtained by iso-kinetic sampling using BGI cyclones to quantify respirable dust concentration at the various air velocities. Laboratory tests were con-ducted at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 10.1 m/s (400 to 2000 fpm),and significant differences in airborne respirable dust levels were measured. This research is being conducted to provide fundamental information on the entrainment characteristics of respirable dust at high air velocities, which will subsequently lead to solutions for shield dust control. A discussion of the test procedures and results are presented.

This paper discusses a practical method for enhancing the performance of mining work crews. The method, described as the Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM), seeks to define performance variability within similar tasks of an underground work crew. Key components of the WCPM include: •job definition through task analyses, •the ranking of job elements by perceived cost consequence, •observational techniques to establish performance baselines, and •cost linkages between adherence to task procedures and measures of consequence for noncompliance. The components of this model emphasize a reliance on learning from a veteran work force and using that information to reinvest in strategies to enhance safety and efficiency. These strategies are not limited to technological efforts but include consideration of the so-called "soft-skill technologies, " aimed at reducing variability in individual performance and at effecting a continuous improvement in overall system effectiveness.

Industrial minerals always play an important part in the technological growth of a country. The extraction and trading of industrial minerals continues to expand, but the industry is now subject to stricter environmental guidelines. This paper presents the current status and growth potential of industrial mineral exploitation in the southeastern European region, i.e. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Italy, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia and Turkey. Annual production figures per country are presented for 1992-1998. These figures are compared to each other, and, where applicable, they are compared to world production figures. The marketing of industrial minerals to Europe and other regions of the world and the effects of such trade on the local economies are also evaluated when such data are available.
