This report is based on existing reports and recently gathered field data. It discusses mineral resource potential of Tertiary playas in the Fort Irwin region. An estimated 1.3 million tons of measured salt "reserves", and 20 million tons of indicated salt resources, have been identified north of the fort. Other indicated resources include 300,000 tons of celestite, 800,000 tons of gypsum, and 10 million tons of selenite. Zeolitic tuff was mined south of Fort Irwin from 1978 to 1984, and unexplored occurrences are widespread. Calcium-bentonite is mined near Barstow, and more may exist, including valuable sodium-and lithium-based bentonites.

The Henderson mine site is located at Red Mountain on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains, approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. The mill site is on the west slope of the Rockies and mine and mill will be connected by an underground railroad. All designs were for a 30,000 ton per day molybdenite processing plant with provisions for future expansion up to 50,000 ton per day if required. This plan did not just happen, but slowly evolved over the course of about three and one-half years. Many plants cannot afford such a delay, but the Henderson project will take about 10 years from the time it was first discovered until production starts, and these 3 !1 years were well spent in determining the best possible plant site and flowsheet. This paper describes some of the problems and the decisions made in arriving at the final location and flowsheet. The paper does not go into the specific details of how protection of the environment went hand-in-hand with all other project considerations. This particular aspect of the planning has been well-reported on other occasions and considerable information on it is readily available.

Due to falling metal prices and depletion of ore reserves, lead-zinc mining in the Leadville, Colorado, area gradually came to a halt in the 1950's. Exploration work continued, however, and by 1969 sufficient ore had been blocked out to warrant sinking a shaft and erecting a new concentrator to treat 700 tpd. The new shaft and concentrator were to be located in Iowa Gulch several miles east of Leadville at an elevation of 11,100 ft. The Leadville project is a joint venture between Newmont Mining Company and ASARCO with ASARCO being the operator. Design work began in the fall of 1969. Engineering was done by Torkelson Engineering Company of Salt Lake City in conjunction with the Central Engineering Department of ASARCO. The plant was constructed by Stearns-Roger Corporation. Construction began in the spring of 1970 and the plant went onstream in April, 1971. Flow sheets and equipment lists are attached. This paper will describe the flow sheet very briefly and discuss in more detail those aspects of the design which may be of interest, particularly the provisions for expanding the capacity of the plant.

Despite limited discussion, Chemistry of Flotation is a good text and reference 1985 by M. C. Fuerstenau, J. D. Miller, and M. C. Kuhn Society of Mining Engineers Caller No. D Littleton, CO 80127 Softcover, $23.50 (member), $18.50 (student member), $28.50 (list) Review by Richard R. Klimpel Chemistry in Flotation, as stated by the authors, is intended as a textbook for students as well as a reference book for practicing flotation engineers. It covers subject matter related to surface phenomena; collectors and collector salts; natural floatability; the flotation of sulfide minerals, insoluble oxide and silicate minerals, semisoluble salts, and soluble salts; and slime coatings. There are no discussions in the book on practical plant implications of flotation chemistry, such as the influence of rate, particle size effects, dosage, flotation equipment, and methods of chemical addition. The book itself is small (only 177 pages), and, as published, is in an easy-to-handle soft cover. Once one accepts the intent of the authors, this book really does represent a very concise and convenient summary of the chemistry of flotation. It is, however, far from complete in its discussion of concepts and implications of data. Very often in the presentation, key prior knowledge (or at least subject matter awareness) not given in the book, is assumed. Thus, depending on one's familiarity with the specific subject matter, some sections can be easily followed while others could be tough going. Some of the discussion is so brief and terse on important subjects that unless the reader already realizes the meaning of the presentation, the conclusions to be drawn are not always clear. Therefore, if one is not expecting a self-contained primer on flotation chemistry, this book is very useful. To this end, the book is recommended to practitioners of flotation chemistry. The presentation of data in figures and tables is good. It helps considerably in the book achieving its conciseness. The authors certainly are qualified and knowledgeable in the subject matter - apparent in the style of presentation. In summary, this reviewer thoroughly enjoyed this book and will use it as a concise review of flotation chemistry. Richard R. Accurate definitions are given without technical jargon, cross-references are included, and commonly used abbreviations are provided. Investigators there reported the latest discoveries, developments in commercial practice, and state-of-the-art reviews of scientific principles and applications of various technologies for handling, processing, and use of high sulfur coals. The Economics of Magnesium Metal, 1985, Roskill Information Services Ltd., 2 Clapham Road, London SW9 OJA England, 129 pp., 71 tables, appendices, bound, $750-Despite setbacks in some major magnesium markets in 1985, Roskill's latest forecast for the last half of this decade is for a 4% to 6% annual growth rate in demand. Growth for magnesium metal is expected in the motor industry for use as a possible substitute for aluminum. Some magnesium producers are altering their marketing strategies to cultivate this market. This study also includes a review of the worldwide magnesium industry, its end uses and consumption, and international trade and price trends.

Estimated domestic production of pumice and pumicite in 2004 increased about 23 percent since 2003, according to the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS estimate of domestic production of 687 kt(757,000 st) for 2003 turned out to be 870 kt (959,000 st)of actual production. The USGS estimated the value of pumice and pumicite sold or used in the United States to be $26 million in 2004, up $4 million from the value in 2003. There was an estimated decrease in the mine, or mill, average price to $24.14/t ($21.90/st) in 2004 from $25.19/t ($22.85/st) in2003.

In October 2006, a 7m Double Shield TBM, boring through very poor volcanic formations, was pushed back by fluid mud, which presence had not been detected during previous field investigations, due to the high covers characterizing the majority of the tunnel axis. The present work describes the investigations made to gain better knowledge of the conditions in front and all around the TBM, the special measures implemented, the exploratory and bypass tunnels excavated, the extraordinary occurrences came true during the execution of these tunnels, the drainage campaigns, the design of the chamber excavated to free the TBM, the dismounting and restarting of the TBM.

Diatomaceous earth or diatomite is a sedimentary rock of organic origin that is composed principally of the silicious skeletal remains of diatoms. Diatoms are microscopic single cell acquatic plants that are related to algae. Diatoms first became abundant in the Cretaceous period from about 65 to 135 million years ago. Most of the commercial deposits are of Pliocene through recent age, and are younger than 35 million years. Diatoms are still abundant in present day lakes and seas. The living diatom is supported and protected by two half cell walls or valves united by a connecting band or girdle. These valves are composed of opaline silica extracted from the water in which the diatom lives. After death of the diatom, the silicious remains settle in the lake or sea and accumulate at variable rates approaching several millimeters per year for very active diatom colonies. This accumulation of silicious sediments, after decay of the organism, burial, and uplift, can result in the formation of diatomaceous earth deposits.

INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott's exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine's three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. The technical parametrization of reserves is a technique which has made an important contribution to the definition and the calculation of optimal mining projects. Its applications to a new open-pit optimization program have already been presented in various papers (François-Bongarçon and Maréchal (1976); François-Bongarçon and Guibal (1981)). The present paper gives a brief description of the general problem of parametrizing reserves before going into the details of the practical algorithms used in two typical cases, i.e. open-pit mining and mining between hanging wall and foot wall.

The presentation named 'Dewatering of fines by Rotary Vacuum Disc Filters' has an opening why the filtration process is important to the Iron Ore Industry. It goes on to describe the various types of dewatering machines which have been used in this industry in the last 30-40 years, and where the vacuum disc filters now dominates. It presents also the most important design changes which have been made during this period to enhance performance. Further are discussed the principles of filtration and the factors and parameters which influence performance and operating costs. As a closing is presented today's ideas and thoughts about what can be foreseen of design modifications and improvements in disc filter design in the coming ten years.

Florida Power and Light is the fifth largest investor-owned electric utility in the country. It has a service territory that covers 35 counties, or 28,000 square miles, 2.5 million customers, and serves 5.6 million people. The total installed capacity is 13,470 MW, generated by four nuclear units, 36 oil and/or gas fired units, and 48 gas turbine units. Traditionally, FPL has been an oil-based utility. In 1979, this dependency on oil became obvious when 42 million barrels of oil were burned during the year. At that time, it was also projected that, based on the current estimates of customer growth and available generation capacity through 1990, FPL's residual fuel oil consumption would increase from the 1979 level of 42 million barrels (6.7 million m3) per year to approximately 55 million barrels (8.7 million m3) per year by the mid-1990's. Concern over this was further aggravated by the fact that it was difficult to estimate both the price and quantity of fuel oil that would be available over the next decade since changes in the world market, decisions by oil producers and refiners, and international political developments would all affect the availability of oil. Also, at that time, the price of residual fuel oil had increased drastically, and there was no reason to think that these prices would soon stabilize. Thus, oil back-out became a primary objective of FPL and since then, FPL has been actively investigating ways to decrease fuel oil consumption.

Exploration for seafloor massive sulfides is currently mainly focused on investigation for active hydrothermal vent fields. However, most of the resource potential is thought to be related to inactive, large deposits that had enough time to accumulate sufficient tonnage. At the same time, ageing of these deposits will ultimately result also in burial acted by either sediments and/or volcanic deposits. We currently lack the technologies to explore for these deposits in a time- and cost-efficient manner. In the fall of 2012 we used a number of AUV-based technologies to explore and image a sulfide occurrence at the Palinuro Volcanic Complex in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Sea; Fig. 1) where sampling and drilling have documented a buried polymetallic barite-pyrite dominated site (Petersen et al., 2014). Sulfide mineralization is here covered by volcaniclastic and pelagic sediments and only red sediment staining and the presence of few tubeworm bushes indicated recent hydrothermal activity - black smoker venting is absent. We used AUVbased high-resolution bathymetry, sidescan sonar imaging, subbottom profiling, as well as magnetics to describe, in a quantitative way, the previously known sulfide-bearing areas as well as to successfully explore for new hydrothermal sites including large chimney structures (Figs. 2). Additionally chemical sensors (CTD, Eh, turbidity) investigated the water column for signs of hydrothermal activity in areas not previously investigated, but at the end, only weak anomalies were found in the southern part of the summit.

Distinct trends in grinding mill technology have emerged in recent years. In an effort to optimize overall mill performance for the needs of the End User, broad measures of logistical speed, process flexibility, operational risk, and overall costs now exert greater influence on the specification of grinding equipment. As a result, innovative alternatives to conventional grinding mill structures, supports, drives, feed, and discharge configurations are now being offered and selected with greater frequency. This paper investigates these trends in grinding mill technology, utilizing optimization and decision-theory techniques. In particular, the paper considers how specific advances in process design, product engineering, manufacturing techniques, and mining operations continue to relax technological constraints, enabling further mill innovation. In this context, a methodology is presented, illustrating how proper selection and specification of grinding mill components and configuration can target an optimization of the four End-User performance measures listed above.

As ore deposits become finer grained the requirements for regrinding before cleaning or leaching have increased substantially. Despite this increasing need, there is no standard test to predict grinding energy requirement below 70 microns. The standard Bond Mill test applies for coarser ball milling, but is not appropriate for stirred milling with fine media grinding to 70 microns. With no industry -standard test, the energy requirement is often made on the basis of supplier estimates or benchmarking against similar applications. Yet suppliers use vastly different scale-up methods which result in widely different energy estimates. Estimates can differ by 100-300% even for similar mills. This must result in serious errors to install either too much or too little grinding power. This paper explores this by comparing the actual performance of full scale regrind mills against their original design estimate. It confirms that serious scale-up errors have been made, and have then been perpetuated by ?benchmarking?. The test conditions to achieve accurate power estimation are discussed. The essential test conditions are: continuous (not batch) tests, ensure steady state (no coarse fraction retained in test mill), correctly account for classification, measure energy directly (not inferred), and using the same media size as the full scale installation. Failure to correctly address even one of these factors can bias results by 40%; failure to address several multiplies the error.

The Bureau of Mines has studied the problem of cracking in residential structure walls from vibrations produced by blasting in surface mines. Direct observations were made of blasting damage consisting primarily of cosmetic cracking in plaster and gypsum board walls. Measurements of structure response and also application of the response spectra analysis single-degree-of-freedom model were used to quantify the frequency dependence of the safe level criteria. An overall summary analysis was performed using the new Bureau of Mines damage observations and data obtained from nine previous studies, including the three analyzed earlier by the BuMines for Bulletin 656, published in 1971. Separate analysis of the high- and low-frequency damage cases, structural response, and two types of construction resulted in the establishment of safe vibration levels ranging from 12 mm/sec to 50 mm/sec (0.5 in/sec to 2.0 in/sec).

The need to provide better mine roof support and control in longwall tailgate entries prompted the Bureau of mines to search for a replacement product for wood cribs. Their search isolated steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFC) as the most effective replacement. Through successful laboratory and underground mine tests, handmade SFC cribs proved to be a viable and more effective roof support system. However, to ensure wider usage, U. S. Steel Mining Co. initiated a joint development and evaluation program with Burrell Construction Company in order to mass produce SFC blocks of reasonable dimension, weight, and cost. Small specimens and full-size cribs were evaluated during this program to determine their compressive strength and post failure characteristics. After considerable testing and adjusting of various concrete mixtures, a final formulation for the SFC crib blocks was selected. That formulation permitted the construction of SFC cribs possessing a nominal crib strength of 3200 psi (22.1 x 106 Pa) and a nominal modulus of elasticity of 1.0 x 106 psi (6894.76 x 106 Pa). These SFC cribs can support from 3.5 to 14.5 times as much load as a wood crib, depending on the size of the wood crib being replaced. Both laboratory and limited mine tests, conducted by U. S. Steel Mining Co. have shown the SFC crib to be an economical and effective means of roof control.

The I-35 Capital Expressway (CapEx) Central Drainage Tunnels will serve as a stormwater collection system for the forthcoming I-35 Capital Express Central reconstruction project through downtown Austin, Texas. The schematic level concept design included three tunnels, 10 to 14 ft ID, totaling 26,000 LF. Constructability reviews during design development indicated issues with the concept design including phasing of construction, conicts with future retaining walls, staging area concerns, and signicant mixed face tunneling. The design was updated to mitigate these risks. The revised design includes two tunnels, both 22-ft ID and totaling 33,000 LF, that will be mined almost entirely in rock.

Extensive testing in the past ten years has shown that where a uniform natural gamma background is present in the strata bordering the seam, the thickness of the boundary coal left in place after mining can be determined by measuring the attenuation of that radiation (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989). Measurements made by the authors in underground mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky, and by others in Wyoming and New Mexico, have shown the presence of such a gamma background (Nelson, 1989). Natural gamma coal thickness sensors of several configurations have been tested in mines owned and operated by the Consolidation Coal Company in Pennsylvania and west Virginia (Nelson and Bessinger, 1988).

9K medium was used to isolate iron-oxidizing bacteria from 27 sump water samples collected from Dexing Cop-per Mine, Chengmen Mountain Mine and Yin Mountain Mine, Jiangxi Province, China. Lead acetate and silver nitrate were used to enrich metal-resistant iron-oxidizing bacteria from the above water samples. Isolate 16 was isolated from the sample taken at Dexing Copper Mine. Growth experiments indicated that when incubated under lead acetate (3,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation, while isolate H1, a less resistant strain taken at Yin Mountain Mine, had a tolerance level of only 400 mg/L. When assayed with other metals, i.e., Ag+ (240 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.9 mg/L), Cu2+ (32,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (22,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation while, on the other hand, isolate H1 exhibited much lower tolerance levels, i.e., Ag+ (60 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.1 mg/L), Cu2+ (19,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (13,500 mg/L). Based on 16S rDNA sequence data, isolate 16 and H1 were both identified as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans.
