This paper is based on field studies in North American surface mines. The work involved the adaptation of microprocessor-based instrumentation to monitor various operating parameters on-board rotary blasthole drills and mining shovels. Following a review of instrumentation and monitoring methodology - drawing on experience gained under field conditions-the paper will focus on the application of monitoring technology within the framework of an Integrated Equipment Monitoring System. Such a system will permit real-time performance evaluation of key equipment involved in surface mine production. Drill performance monitoring has been demonstrated through work to date, to provide significant input into blast design, reserve estimation, mine planning and production control processes, through an improved facility for ground characterization. Monitoring excavation equipment has been proven valuable in assessing how effectively the input from drill monitored data has been used in the evolution of blast designs. This specifically refers to assessing blast efficiency through measuring associated levels of excavator performance in relation to muckpile characteristics. The medium-term goal of equipment instrumentation and monitoring has been to assist mines in optimizing the overall rock breakage and handling process. Based on the reported results, this has been accomplished. Long-term efforts now concern using a greater understanding of equipment performance and response to varying operating conditions as a foundation for the implementation of mining automation.

In the course of the last decade, the concept of sustainability has turned from a catchword into a vision - a vision to which politics and industry feel increasingly committed. In terms of the energy industry, the key criteria for sustainable development are supply security, economic efficiency and social responsibility. Coal is able to meet all these criteria if it is produced in conformity with high safety standards through the use of modern mining technology and converted into electricity with the aid of environmentally friendly methods. Among the fossil energy resources, coal will, according to the vast majority of global energy scenarios, continue to be the most important input energy in power generation for the foreseeable future. Coal is therefore today, and will in future continue to be, an important element in ensuring sustainable energy and raw material supply, worldwide, in Europe and also in Germany.

Uranium and its decay series are associated with phosphate deposits of marine origin. Uranium concentrations are on the order of 100 to 200 ppm in matrix from the Bone Valley formation of Central Florida and about 25% this value in matrix mined from the Hawthorne formation in North Florida. Occupational radiation exposure due to this source has been under study in Florida since the mid 1970's (Windham, Partridge, Horton 1976; Roessler and Prince 1978). This report is based on findings of an industry-wide scoping survey conducted by the University of Florida during March 1976 through May 1977 and subsequent studies in selected individual facilities. PHOSPHATE MINING OPERATIONS Mining and beneficiation operations are diagramed in Figure 1. At the excavation site, electric powered draglines remove the overburden and expose the phosphate matrix (ore) which is then slurried and pumped to the beneficiation site. At the washer stage of the beneficiation plant, the matrix is subjected to washing and screening. A coarse product, "pebble" is produced and sent to storage piles while the fine fraction is passed through a series of cyclones to remove the clays. The generated clay suspension is sent to settling ponds while the remaining sand-sized fraction is sent to the flotation plant. At the flotation plant, phosphate particles are recovered from the fine sand particles of similar size through several stages of treatment with reagents, agitation and separation of floating and sinking fractions. The high grade concentrate produced is transferred to storage while the sand tailings are discarded. [ ]

The alphaDOSIMETER is a complete, integrated system designed to monitor the immediate worksite of underground miners where the disintegration for radon daughters is a risk to the health of mining personnel. The dosimeter weighing little more than one pound is worn by each miner throughout the entire shift and is powered by the miner's cap lamp battery. After this integration period, the unit is connected to a reading network whereupon the day's data is dumped, calculated and stored. Beginning in July 1980, prototype units were subjected to vigorous underground testing in uranium mines in Canada and the United States and in tin mines in Cornwall, U.K. The testing results are summarized and proposals advanced for a typical mine monitoring system utilizing the alphaDOSIMETER.

This paper describes the successful repair of trunion on a 14 foot diameter by 20 foot long ball mill. The activities of Outokumpu Oy in the mining industry span all branches from prospecting to the production of refined metals and the manufacture of semifinished products. Products include copper, zinc, mercury, cadmium, nickel, cobalt, sulfur, gold, silver, iron ore, stainless steel, selenium, ferrochromium, lead and chromium concentrates, as well as chromite foundry sand. In addition, the activities of Outokumpu Oy extend to development and production of instruments, planning of industrial projects and instrumentation as well as the manufacture of specialized machines for ore concentration. The company now operates ten mines, eight of which are underground and all of which are in sulfide deposits except one. The fully automated monitoring and control of underground mine ventilation at the Pyhasalmi mine are an important technological contribution to the industry. Development work on the ventilation control was started in 1969, and since May 1973 it has operated in a fully automated computer-controlled mode. The Pyhasalmi mine has been in production since 1962, having begun as an open-pit operation. Development of underground mining began in 1967. The present annual production is one million tons all from underground mining. The underground mine is equipped with a main shaft and an auxiliary shaft, and two raises for ventilation. There is also a rampway from the surface to a depth of 500 m. The main shaft is for ore hoisting and the auxiliary shaft is used for waste-rock hoisting and for downcast ventilation. One of the raises is for downcast ventilation and the other is for upcast ventilation. The mining methods employed at Pyhasalmi are sublevel stoping with backfill, sublevel caving, and sublevel shrinkage stoping. Copper and zinc concentrates are produced. The Pyhasalmi mine is highly mechanized with about 4000 installed diesel horsepower underground. The maximum capacity of fresh air is 150 m3/s.

Energy cost for mine ventilation in Sweden is high, especially during winter time when air must be heated. This paper presents the result from a project entitled ventilation-as-required. The term ventilation-as-required means that the required volume of fresh air should be distributed only to such areas, where mining work is going on and to be reduced to a minimum in the rest of the mine. Ventilation-as-required is a monitoring system that controls the operation and capacity of the fans and measure the air pollutant gases, i.e. carbon monoxide, nitrogen and sulphur dioxide at strategic points. It is an active system that responds when equipment is under operation. MITU proposed in 1991 a project to develop a ventiation-as¬required system and such components as transmitters and receivers for the communication between the equipment and the fans. The mining companies, Boliden Mineral AB, LKAB, Outokumpu and Ammeberg Mining Corporation joined the project and have financed a joint research and development programme supported with a grant from the Swedish Government through NUTEK. MITU proposed a second project in 1992 to the mining companies to develop an improved "intelligent" fan for scope ventilation. Boliden Mineral and LKAB joined the project and have financed a joint research and development project supported by the Swedish Government through NUTEK. The Government even made a commitment to support the investment of the first 50 fans ordered with a grant of 25% of the investment cost. The result from projects show that the target set up in the plans is more than achieved, with an energy reduction that exceeds 30% compared to previous consumption. No environmental influence due to reduced ventilation is observed in the stope when work is under progress. Dilution of exhaust gases from diesel fuel decreased from 6.000 m3/L consumed diesel fuels to 3,600 m3/L. The automatic data processing and sensor system is even increasing the security of the work so that it can be done under safer environmental conditions.

The trends in dust exposure levels and longwall production over the last 20 years were examined. The study was conducted for nine major underground coal mining states: Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio. Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia. The dust exposure and shift production data were obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Trends were identified and analyzed for the headgate, tailgate, jack setter and shearer operator positions. The relationships between average scam height and dust exposure levels as well as the percentage of dust samples exceeding the dust standard for the four occupations were examined. The concentration to production ratio, a better indicator of the success of dust control measures, was calculated for the 20-Year period. The data show that, in general, dust exposures over the last two decades hare decreased. However, it appears that much of the decrease was in states that had significantly high dust exposure levels (such as Alabama and Utah), while for states such as Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, the decrease was not as dramatic. Major reductions were made in the period starting in 1982, when a host of longwall dust control techniques was introduced. However, nearly 35% of jack setter and shearer operator dust exposures were still above 2 mg/m3 in 1990, with nearly 20% of tailgate operator exposures and 8% of headgate operator exposures being above the federal standard. The concentration/production ratio has shown a remarkable decrease since 1981. This indicates that long wall operators have been able to meet increased production as well as, to a large extent, control chest production at the face. An analysis of the relationship between average seam height and dust concentration for the years 1984 and 1990 shows that while in 1984, the dust concentration could be correlated to seam height, in 1990 the relationship was less definitive. This indicates that technological factors may be more important than seam height.

INTRODUCTION The need for Government-sponsored research and development to increase excavation rates and lower costs for tunneling and mining operations in a variety of rock types has been emphasized in a wide range of publications from advisory panels, symposiums on rapid excavation, and individuals. In response to the predicted demands for mining and construction-oriented underground excavations for the next two decades (1970-1989), a comprehensive 10-year, $200-million research program in rapid excavation was proposed by the National Academy of Sciences in 1968 (1). Although the large program recommended by the Academy has not been funded, substantial Government-sponsored research in rapid excavation has been conducted during the past several years. This paper reviews some of the significant research accomplishments obtained under a three-year, $6.6-million research program in rock mechanics and rapid excavation sponsored by the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and managed by the Bureau of Mines. In addition to the rock mechanics research, five major phases of excavation; systems analysis, geologic prediction, rock disintegration, ground support, and materials handling were represented by the projects funded under the ARPA program. The Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables of the Mexican government entered into an agreement with the United Nations in 1964 for the mineral exploration of a large area in Estado de Sonora, Mexico. The agreement called for a systematic exploration for copper in northern Sonora based on photogeologic mapping, aerial reconnaissance, and geochemical stream sediment sampling. The UN-CRNNR investigations resulted in the detection of anomalous copper values in sediment from the Arroyo Cruz de Cafiada. The anomaly was followed upstream to its source, which ultimately proved to be the La Caridad ore body (see Fig. 1). Soil copper and molybdenum values were found over a large area, and further detailed geologic and geophysical investigations were instituted of the anomalous area. David Coolbaugh was largely responsible for the follow-up work. An induced polarization (IP) survey found a roughly circular region of "highs" that coincided with a high soil copper anomaly. The circular anomalies ringed the topographic feature that ultimately was found to contain the Caridad ore body. Soil geochemical copper response over the ore body was subdued, because the soils were derived from a leached capping, whereas leaching in fringe areas that contained less veining was less intense. The ore body was also ringed by the typical high pyrite zone, and this was the anomaly detected by the IP survey. The UN began drilling in the fall of 1966. Eleven holes tested the IP-Cu geochemical high, but none were of commercial interest. The project was returned to the Consejo and was reviewed in the field by G.P. Salas and V.F. Hollister. It was found that the leached capping had not been tested by the past activities, and the Consejo elected to explore that area in 1967. The capping was evaluated by Salas and Hollister and drilling by the Consejo began in 1967. Commercial grade ore intercepts were found in the first hole. The Consejo drilled nine holes, of which eight were commercial. At least 90.7 Mt (100 million tons) of 0.8% copper were indicated by the Consejo in eight holes. Gold in many ores occurs in sulphides, which, if the gold is finely disseminated, renders the ore refractory and therefore not amenable to the simple process of milling and cyanidation. Traditional methods of treatment of these refractory ores is to produce a sulphidic flotation concentrate which is roasted to form a porous calcine from which the gold is recovered by cyanidation. The roasting process imposes a constraint of a minimum sulphur grade of the concentrate on the flotation plant, which may lead to a lower gold recovery being achieved in the flotation section. Thermal decomposition of the concentrate by roasting means that the sulphur contained therein has to be treated and disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner; and, if arsenopyrite is present in the concentrate the environ- mental aspects will be worsened. It has long been recognized that finer milling of gold-bearing materials improves the liberation of gold, especially when the gold particles are very fine. After extensive laboratory and pilot plant investigations (Liddell, Patents), a suitable mill has been developed for the mining industry by Metprotech, which is capable of producing very fine grinds (down to 90 percent passing one m if necessary). In the course of the investigations it has been found that a large number of gold-bearing materials are amenable to fine milling. A specific advantage that fine milling of sulphidic materials has over oxidative processes such as roasting and bacterial leaching is that the sulphides are not decomposed and there is therefore not a sulphur disposal problem. Furthermore, the milled sulphides can become a future sulphur feed source, and can be reclaimed if necessary. INTRODUCTION In the mining industry, timing in land acquisitions can be of the essence. In order to secure promising lands, deals are often negoti- ated quickly and evidenced by letters of intent containing what the parties feel are the essential terms of the deal. In some cases, a company is willing to acquire land only if it can lock up a number of promising properties, and so a "non-binding" letter of intent is used to formalize the essential terms, while leaving the company without legal liability. Later, the letters of intent will be sent to a lawyer to prepare a formal acquisition agreement. Many times, how- ever, especially in a land acquisition rush, another company will attempt to better the deal prior to the execution of that formal agreement, and the first company will be forced to rely on the initial letter of intent, only to find out to its chagrin that it has no deal In other cases, the company holding the desired property is another mining company, and the negotiation of an option or joint venture is the only way the first company can acquire an interest in the desired land. In order to make its offer more attractive, it may have to reveal confidential or proprietary information about the property or the surrounding lands. Here, too, letters of intent are often used to formalize the essential points of the agreement. Once again, however, prior to the execution of a formal joint venture agreement, the transaction may collapse and the letter of intent prove to be only that. Direct observations of intergranular fracture during comminution are very difficult to make. The best indirect method is based on the measurement of interphase area before and after comminution. If intergranular fracture does not occur, the interphase area should be conserved during comminution, but it should decrease if significant amounts of intergranular fracture occur. The interphase area per unit volume can be determined by image analysis from measurements on sections of the unbroken ore and on sections through the particles after comminution. However, the measurements must be corrected for the effects of image resolution on the measured phase and particle perimeters. A correction procedure was developed, and the true interphase perimeter per unit volume was measured before and after comminution in a sample of chromite-serpentinite ore and two samples of Witwatersrand pyritic quartzite. The pyritic quartzite showed no significant evidence of grain- boundary fracture while the chromite-serpentinite showed a significant decrease in interphase area per unit volume of chromite, indicating that intergranular fracture occurred.

"Coal mine ranks No.1 among the 6 major high-risk industries, so it is no doubt that the senior managers in the coal mine bear more stress than other industry executives. The massive working stress results in serious influences on the physical and mental health of the senior managers of coal mine, which might also induce the safety risk in the coal mine. Therefore, to evaluate the senior managers’ working stress and put forward strategies of mitigating the stress is of great theoretical and practical significance in improving the physical and mental health of the senior managers and reducing the safety risk in the coal mine. The research on the working stress has been made in the western countries for almost 50 years, China began the research in the mid and late 1990s, the research is spread across multiple industries including education, medical treatment, computer and aviation. However, there is little research on the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine, so the available literatures are few. In the paper, we, based on the working stress model of Robbins and through questionnaire survey, analyze the element composition of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine; then, we construct the evaluation indicator system of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine based on the individual factor, organization factor and environment factor; after that, we determine weights of each evaluation indicators by using the improved triangular fuzzy number weight method, and set up the evaluation model of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine on the basis of the fuzzy comprehensive assessment method. At last, in accordance with the model, we evaluate and analyze the working stress for the senior managers of some typical coal mines, and diagnoses the major sources and intensities of the senior managers’ working stress, and then propose corresponding strategies of mitigating the stress."

The importance of adequate mine ventilation for good health and safety conditions has been recognized since miners first ventured underground. All over the world, governmental actions on mine health and safety are directly connected with mine atmospheric environments, their assessment and control. These governmental actions have been, and continue to be, motivated by the repeated experience that potential threats from inadequate control can evolve, either suddenly or in the long-term, into unpleasant reality, with catastrophic health and safety consequences. These governmental actions are also an indication of the remarkable professional progress being made in the field of mine ventilation. Surely, no developed country allows underground mines to operate without strong measures for the control of ventilation under legislation specific to the mining industry. In the United States, the federal government's responsibility for mine safety has evolved over the years through a series of legislative actions beginning in 1865 and continuing through 1910, 1941, 1947 and 1952. The passage of the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act of 1966 (the 1966 Metal Act), the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (the 1969 Coal Act) and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977 (the 1977 Mine Act) are the most important milestones in this long legislative history. The 1977 Mine Act adopted many of the stronger features of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1970, perhaps the most significant piece of legislation on workers' occupational health and safety in US history. It is worthwhile to ask, "How far has the United States come in mine ventilation since the enactment of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act?" This Act and its associated regulations defined in great specificity many standards for healthful and safe operation of a mine and, in some cases, what constitutes good ventilation practice. Since 1969, the frequency and severity of disaster-type events in US coal mines has decreased markedly. A primary reason for this achievement is the strength of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act's regulatory features in such areas as methane concentration control, dust control, intrinsic safety and explosion-proof enclosures, minimum air quantity and quality standards and air distribution and escapeway provisions. These requirements greatly influenced mine ventilation planning, engineering and practice, leading to increasingly safe working conditions.

Through a joint development program between Bougainville Copper Ltd. and Nordberg, the MP1000 cone crusher was developed and tested during the period between 1982 and 1987. Following the successful prototype work, Bougainville Copper purchased an additional three units. A second prototype was installed at Codelco's El Teniente three-stage crushing installation in 1987. This unit has also completed its test period successfully. Three additional units have been sold, making a total of eight, to date. Two will be installed as secondary crushers in two separate large aggregate plants. The first unit installed in the United States was placed in operation at Vulcan Materials Company's plant in Manassas, Virginia in early May 1990. Another unit is being installed in Asarco's Ray Mines expansion. The Asarco installation will be a SAG MILL pebble crusher producing approximately 600 STPH of nominal 1/2" product. Application Objective The objective was to design a crusher that would fit on an existing 7' foundation with minimum modification and yet be capable of twice the production of a 7' cone crusher. In meeting this objective, the power rating was increased to 1000 HP, the maximum design crushing force was increased and the crusher was designed to operate at higher speeds than an equivalent size Symons cone crusher. Gold, as a precious metal, has been sought for several thousand years. During this time economics have generally determined whether or not a deposit is minable. Today, few would spend $500.00 or $1,000.00 to produce one ounce of gold, yet most gold deposits currently being mined would have such costs if they were mined using the methods of the 18th century. Innovation has been the key to success in the world of mining. We are constantly having to look for new ways to mine deposits of lower grade, at greater depths, or with higher stripping ratios. The mining of placer gold deposits has always been subject to the volatile swings of the world price and the constant rise in production costs. The rise in costs is compounded by the drop in overall ore grades. Occasionally, a major technological innovation will dramatically reduce the costs of placer mining to allow previously marginal or unminable deposits to be mined at a profit. The continuous bucketline dredge was the last such major innovation in the gold placer mining. The continuous bucketline dredge has allowed large volumes of placer deposits to be picked up and processed on a continuous basis. Unfortunately, as the overall grade of the deposit declines, it becomes impossible to process enough ore to pay for the operating costs. There are many gold deposits around the world waiting for the next technological innovation that will allow them to be mined. One such deposit has been the Grey River deposit near Greymouth in New Zealand. In fiscal 1996, the US Congress directed that the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) be closed. Certain functions were reassigned to other agencies. The remaining employees were separated and the unoccupied sites were decommissioned. As a result, 12 locations were closed and about 1,200 employees were terminated in March 1996. About 600 employees at five locations were reassigned to other federal agencies. This article provides a summary of the continuing functions, the agencies involved and the points of contact for each continuing function. The functions that were discontinued are also identified. The functions that have been maintained and transferred to other agencies are: ? Portions of USBM's Mineral Information and Analysis program formerly conducted in Washington, DC and Denver, CO were assigned to the US Geological Survey (USGS). ? The Mineral Land Assessment program in Alaska (Anchorage and Juneau) was transferred to the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM). ? The Health and Safety Research program in Pittsburgh, PA and Spokane, WA was reassigned on an interim basis to the US Department of Energy (DOE). In fiscal year 1997, it was permanently assigned to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention within the US Department of Health and Human Services. ? Environmental Research at Pittsburgh, PA was assigned to DOE. ? Materials Research at Albany, OR was assigned to DOE. ? The helium program was assigned to BLM, where it will be managed pending privatization. ? Coal and noncoal mine maps were transferred to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE). The following locations were closed: ? Research centers in Denver, CO; Minneapolis, MN; Reno, NV; Rolla, MO; Salt Lake City, UT and Tuscaloosa, AL. ? Field operations centers in Denver, CO and Spokane, WA. ? Washington, DC headquarters office. To provide a concise picture of all of the affected functions, the following is a synopsis of the USBM program functions and facilities immediately before the closure.
