The correct process engineering, installation, operating and maintenance parameters are addressed as well as actual results for new and retrofit installations on USA coal capital and operating costs of spiral circuits are compared to those of traditional fine coal circuitry.

The Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., generates a jarosite waste at its Risdon smelter. Since 1974 this waste has been disposed of at sea off south-east Tasmania. As part of a monitoring programme prescribed by the Australian Government, bottom sediments from the disposal zone are monitored regularly. QEM*SEM image analysis complements conventional chemical analysis, having the ability to partition the occurrence of an element between sediment particles of metallurgical and natural origin. The adaptation of QEM*SEM techniques to the evaluation of bottom sediments provides insight into the fate of the particles of jarosite waste.

When John F. Kennedy made this statement, I am sure he was not thinking about the valuation of limestone reserves. However, it is certainly applicable. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how the discomfort of thought (i.e., the analytical and methodical process performed by a reputable professional) builds the foundation for an opinion that provides assurance as to the value of a property. In its final form, a valuation is nothing more than an opinion. The credence of that opinion is directly proportional to the knowledge of the appraiser and the efforts and judgment extended in developing said opinion. Presented herein are the methodologies for formulating a defensible opinion. Before detailing the valuation process, an overview of the limestone industry is presented along with some historical parameters relating to the industry. Secondly, the most widely used valuation methodologies and a brief discussion of each are presented. Two case studies are then presented, which review actual valuation studies. The paper concludes with how the valuation process should be published in a report format that is defensible from a legal standpoint, bankable from a financial standpoint, and decipherable from a layman's standpoint.

A lower moisture content for a clean coal product means increased Btu content, or increased yields at the same Btu content, and lower operating costs. The conventional surfactant-based dewatering aids effeciently lower the moisture content but often the presence of residual surfactant in the filtrate and recycle water causes problems downstream. ACCOAL-DRI 1000, a surfactant-based dewatering aid, was developed to solve this problem by minimizing the downstream effects while efficiently lowering the moisture content. The theory of the use of surfactants in filtration will be discussed as well as the development and field evaluation of this new product.

The San Manuel Oxide Pit is located within the subsidence boundaries of Magma Copper Company's block caving operation. Ground conditions offer a constant blasting challenge and vary from hard, competent crystalline rock to widely spaced fracturing in a sedimentary conglomerate. A successful drilling and blasting program has undergone several changes since mining commenced in 1985 and continues to be developed. This paper discusses the site specific progress made with the drilling and blasting program from selection of feasibility parameters to current practice. Topics discussed include controlled blasting, use Of high energy blasting agents, charge decking, blast casting, as well as standard drill and blast techniques.

An integrated approach to mine management is presented. A model for achieving the level of control of operations critical to surviving in the current market is outlined. The integrated Production and Cost Management System (PRaCaST) is designed to provide mine managers with a reliable, quantitative, decision-assisting system that can be used in formulating timely responses to complex fluctuations in operations. PRacaST consists of a productivity forecast model, sectional bills of materials containing current resources consumption factors, a linear programming scheduling model, and operations analyses that focus on production and cost performances. The system is applied to an underground coal mine.

By way of background. it is important to keep in mind that the information presented in this paper relates specifically to synthetically produced precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) fillers. Natural calcium carbonate fillers manufactured by grinding limestone, marble and chalk, though having similar chemical and physical analyses to PCCs, normally contribute somewhat different performance properties in paint, paper and polymer systems. Many factors have been cited and numerous theories have been proposed for the observed differences. Particle size parameters, surface chemistry and particle morphology are the items most frequently mentioned. A discussion of this subject is beyond the scope of this paper.

In December 1988 Phelps dodge corporation brought an underground gold mine into production in the republic of Botswana. The mineralization is associated with steeply dipping shear zones in Archean greenstones of the Tati Schist Belt. The gold is intimately associated with sulfides and is refractory in nature. The deposit is being exploited by underhand open stoping methods. Vertical and inclined shafts are used to hoist the ore to surface where it is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation, followed by fluid bed roasting with CIP elution and carbon regeneration. Adjacent deposits are being explored with a view to increasing production. Legal and taxation aspects of operating in Botswana are discussed.

The paper presents an analysis and discussion of the underground ventilation system at the waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), with particular emphasis on specific repository-related requirements and the gradual evolution of engineering designs relative to the WIPP Project scope. The underground facility has been constructed with three shafts. Additional studies, coupled with actual site-specific experience, have established? the need for construction of a fourth ventilation shaft to double the under-ground airflow. As a research pilot project, and the first of its type in combining mining and nuclear technologies, the WIPP Project is accumulating data and experience that may be fruitfully applied in the future designs of ventilation systems for planned commercial nuclear waste repositories.

The use of computer models to design ultimate pit limits during feasibility study and long range mine planning is becoming a significant practice in open pit mining. One of the problems in determining optimal ultimate pit limits using true optimization techniques has been they require a great deal of computer memory and execution time. In this paper, the maximum closure of a graph, which is a true optimizing model developed by Lerchs and Grossmann, is modified for solving ultimate pit limit problems. By using some properties of the original L&G graph algorithm, the tree configuration can be reduced to only connections between positive ore nodes. The modified algorithm is shown to require less memory and processing time while still yielding an optimal solution.

The Tanco pegmatite is located in the Bird River greenstone belt of south-eastern Manitoba approximately 160 km northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1). The orebody was discovered in 1929 and subsequently attempts were made to exploit it for tin by Jack Nutt Mines Ltd. and later in the middle 1950's by Montgary Oil Ltd., who extensively developed but did not produce from its lithium deposits. In 1966 systematic investigation of the pegmatite as a potential source of tantalum led to the founding of Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. (TANCO), and production of tantalum concentrates from the Bernie Lake mine commenced in 1969. Tanco's currently jointly owned by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Cabot Corporation, and the Province of Manitoba.

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT At the beginning of the 1970 more than 90% of pro¬duction drilling in open-pit mining was obtained with the use of rotary drills. At the same time, the use of rotary drills underground was virtually nonexistent. Several progressive mines began questioning whether efficient rotary drilling could not be adapted to under¬ground applications. In the late 60s and early 70s at¬tempts to use rotary drilling were made by Inco, Ltd. and Meramac Mining, utilizing drill units designed as a combination of small diameter raise drills and rotary drills. These initial attempts were unsuccessful primarily due to the immobility of the equipment and low degree of dependability. At the same time, experiments con¬ducted by Inco and Meramac using large diameter in¬the-hole percussion drills produced immediate encourag¬ing results. The first serious attempt at utilizing rotary drilling underground was made by Texasgulf in 1971 at Kidd Creek mine in Canada. An experimental stope 15 m wide, 36 m long, and 30 m deep was drilled using 200-mm diam rotary drilled holes. The machine used was a Robbins' Model 11 D. The Model 11D is a rotary drill designed to drill drain and utility holes under¬ground. The results of this test revealed that large diameter blasthole stoping was feasible. The indications were that the major areas of concern-fragmentation and pillar damage-could be controlled and a new low-cost stoping method resulted. At this point Texasgulf and Robbins entered into a cost-sharing agreement to develop a rotary drilling unit specifically for this stoping method. Drilling of the trial stope required pouring a concrete pad at each drill hole plus anchoring the derrick to the pad by means of rock¬bolts. Utilization expressed in terms of drilling time to available time was less than 20%. It was obvious that the required unit had to be mobile, setup time had to be minimized, and rod handling had to be improved. The first attempt at an underground production-type rotary drill consisted of mounting the basic 11D on an air-powered Eimco 600 Series crawler. The crawler was equipped with four screw-type leveling jacks operated by an impact wrench; rod rack facilities for 60 m of 1.2-m long, 170-mm diam rods; a rod handling facility consisting of an air-lift swing boom and a pipe loader which automatically positioned the rod under the float¬ing drive box; a turnbuckle anchor system requiring in¬stallation of four rockbolts in the drill drift floor and placing turnbuckles from the rockbolts to the corners of the drill; and trailing power units containing the electrics and hydraulics required to operate the drilling unit. Operation of this unit revealed a vast improvement in drilling time but some problem areas remained. The anchoring system required secondary drilling and proved difficult to adapt to the localized irregular floor surface and the trailing power unit was difficult to maneuver and was causing unnecessary maintenance costs. Addi¬tional improvements resulted in the standard 11MD rotary blasthole drill. DESCRIPTION OF UNIT This standard model consists of the drill and the power unit integrally mounted on an air-powered crawler chassis (Fig. 1). The rod-handling and leveling¬jack systems are similar to those used on the prototype Texasgulf unit and remained relatively the same. The anchoring system has been replaced by the roof jack, initially screw type but now hydraulically actuated. The anchoring system is necessary as the drill exerts more thrust than the weight of the unit. During operation it is found that the two front jacks adequately anchor the machine. The complete unit's operational dimensions are: height, 3.2 m; width, 2.1 m; and length, 4.2 m requiring a 3.5- x 3-m drill drift. The derrick is pivot mounted and raised and lowered by a hydraulic cylinder reducing the transport height to 2.5 m. The derrick is also turnbuckle mounted to allow dip angle drilling from vertical to 0.52 rad (30°) off vertical. The drill derrick can be mounted to allow dip axis to be parallel or perpendicu¬lar to the long axis of the unit. The standard rods are 1.2 m in length and are contained in racks of 10 which can be removed for transportation. Drilling torque is produced by a 56-kW (75-hp) electric motor driving a double vane pump which in turn drives a Robbins high torque gear-type hydraulic mo¬tor. In addition to the hydraulic motor, the machine drive system has a 3.9:1 planetary gear reducer. This results in six speeds with the following minimum and maximum range: Maximum rpm 112 Torque 3725.5 J (380 kg m) Minimum rpm 10 Torque 14 706.0 J (1500 kg m) Drilling thrust is provided by two bootstrap cylin¬ders pressurized by a variable volume pump. This sys¬tem can produce from 0 to 267 231.2 N thrust in either direction. Bailing air (approximately 17 m3/min at 382.2 to 490.3 kPa) is introduced through a rotary swivel pass¬ing directly through the center of the drive system to keep efficiency and losses to a minimum. Hole annulus is also kept to a minimum by using 170-mm rod when drilling a 200-mm hole. A small amount of water is added to the air for dust suppression. The machine has to be supplied with air, water, and electrical power. It does not appear feasible to provide an integral air power supply with the rotary drill such as is done with open-pit rotary drills. Air is required and installed during the primary development of the drill drift. The machine can be adapted to drill hole diameters from 170 to 228 mm for blasthole operations. The drill string consists of the rotary bit, crossover stabilizer, roller stabilizers, and standard rods. The operator controls speed and thrust pressure from an operating console which can be mounted in a conve¬nient position. Mount Isa has made an adaption to the operating console to permit remote collaring of drill holes in an uncleared floor.

INTRODUCTION Under certain geological and mining conditions mining near the surface results in an intensive destruction of the overlying rock strata. If the system of mine openings remains filled with air after having completed all mining activities because the flooding of the mines depending on the morphology of the mining area does not exceed a certain level, this circumstance might result in dangers for the public. This is particularly true where uncontrollable air- ways occur within the destroyed rock or if former uranium mining areas are concerned. In these areas radon emanation resulting in undue radon concentration should be taken into account. This circumstance can be counteracted by suitable measures of ventilation. In the following the example of a uranium deposit in the Erzgebirge Mountains (Saxon Ore Mountains) is used to illustrate how statements about the ground flow through overlying rock can be made on the basis of systematic investigations. Finally comparisons with experience gained in coal mining yield orientation data which are used as input quantities in ventilation network calculations and in project preparation of mine fans. Last not least it is proved that endangering the population by radon can be excluded by installing an appropriate fan. INITIAL SITUATION From 1946 to 1989 the uranium deposit of Schlemal-Alberode was mined starting from superficial zones down to depths of 1,800 m. The total output amounted to 80,000 t of uranium, i.e. Schlemal Alberode is one of the largest uranium deposits in the world. The mine openings comprise a cavity of 40 million m3. Al- though thin seams (0.2 to 0.3 m) and steep to semi-steep veins (60 - 70 degrees on average) were extracted using the method of overhand cut-and-fill there were also deposit sections with larger thicknesses and poor ore zones, respectively, where especially after the war until about 1955 large openings were formed due to missing filling. Due to this uncontrolled, relatively "wild" mining considerable subsidence of the surface and fractures in the border zone of the subsidence area occurred. The town of Oberschlema was destroyed and an area of 0.14 km2 was damaged by mining involving a maximum subsidence of 6 m in the centre - called deformation area. The rehabilitation work for the deposit area of Schlemal Alberode involves the flooding of the openings up to a level of the Markus-Semmler-Sohle as long-term preventive measure. Fig. 1 shows the flooding level of October 1996. The level of the -540 m drift will probably be reached in June 1997. From that point of time a general rearrangement of the ventilation has to be made because the central return air ventilation via shaft 373 will no longer be possible. This shaft has no connection with the superficia1 system of mine openings. A new return air ventilation system based on shaft 382 as return air shaft will be designed (Fig. 1). The capacity of the future mine fan system will e.g. be determined by the flow conditions in the deformation area mentioned above. For this reason investigations were carried out in a test drift 13a on the level of the Markus-Semmler-Sohle in the stretching zone of the subsidence trough for several days (Fig. 2 and 3). INFLUENCE OF THE OPERATING CONDITIONS OF THE MAIN MINE FAN ON THE RADIATION SITUATION ON SURFACE The beginning of flooding in 1991 was also the beginning of the investigations into the options of future ventilation due to the reduction of the mining area. The first analyses of radon emanation made in May 1991 showed that only about 20 % of the total radon emanation result from systematically ventilated mine workings. This means that despite of existing dams the air streams through the majority of mine openings of the deposit. The analysis of the individual radon inflows illustrates the special problematic nature of the deposit involving all possible effects on the surface. The shutdown of the main mine fan over the long period between 2.10. and 6.10.1991 showed the essential influence of the operating conditions of the fans on the whole radiation situation on surface. Fig. 4 shows the comparison of the radon concentration level and its daughters during a 'normal" weekend with the level during long-term shutdown in the old 'Casino" of the papermill of Niederschlema. This papermill as well as the 'Casino" are situated in the outcropping zone of the deposit section of Niederschlema. The -60 m level was driven as the upper level in this area, from which the panels were driven to about 20 m below the surface. Also below the "Casino" there is such a panel in the vein 'Glirck", whose roof is directly situated below the building in a depth of 39 m. Directly next to it there is the raise 2 of the panel 'Namenlos" in a depth of 27 m. The graphics clearly shows the immediate increase in radon concentration as well as in the daughter concentration after the shutdown of the fans. The elimination of the artificially generated negative pressure results in the reversal of the convection direction due to the natural ventilating pressure. The interface structure allows the mine airto pass through aero- dynamic connections to the surface. Neglecting the meteorological parameters the concentrations of radon and its daughters in- creased by about 350 % as compared to a 'normal" weekend during longterm shutdown (i.e. in 4 days). Production scheduling of an open-pit mine is one of the most important steps in open-pit mining. The production schedule of a mine defines the distribution of cash flows and as a result directly influences the net present value (NPV) and overall economic feasibility of a project. Although the need to plan and operate a mine with an optimum production schedule has been obvious for some time, the methods used to obtain such a schedule have not been. The current practice for doing is to do it by hand on the basis of trial and error analysis. In an attempt to improve the way production scheduling is currently done, a new computer based production scheduling algorithm is developed. This paper describes the fundamentals of this newly developed heuristic scheduling algorithm and its application on a gold deposit. The results coming from a case study show that the schedules based on the new method provides improved cash flows compare to a manually done production schedules.

The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (?CERCLA?), as amended by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 ("SARA?) establishes a comprehensive Federal regulatory program for addressing environmental and public health risks posed by releases of hazardous substances into the environment from a wide variety of industrial and other sources. The statute is primarily administered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA"). The applicability of CERCLA to the mining, milling, and smelting industries (hereinafter referred to as the ?mining industry?) has been upheld by the courts and recently affirmed by Congress. The purpose of this article is to briefly outline the scope of CERCLA as it applies to the mining industry, the scope of EPA's activities pertaining to the mining industry under CERCLA, the types of remedies which may be pursued by EPA, and the liability scheme of CERCLA as it applies to corporate entities, managers, and shareholders involved with the mining industry. Natural resource damage claims, State cooperative agreements, and other State-related issues will not be discussed.

Arizona is a sun-belt growth-region where 13 tons of industrial (nonmetallic) minerals is being produced annually per capita. In 19B5, non-fuel mineral production reached $1.532 billion and consisted of metallic ($1.277 billion-84%) and nonmetallic ($253.5 million-16%) earth materials. Sand-and-gravel value was second only to copper. over 90% of the value of nonmetallics is represented by combined sand, gravel, cement, and lime. The remaining less than 10% ($25 million) was attributed mainly to stone, specific volcanic products (cinder, perlite, pumice), gypsum, clays, salt, zeolite, and others. Current interest in industrial-mineral development in Arizona is high, especially in the geologically complex Basin and Range region.

The concept of sub-aerial tailings deposit.ion using a managed rotational deposition system to form a deposit of partly-saturated tails for North American conditions was introduced by Knight and described by Knight and Haile (1983). The application of the sub-aerial technique, together with continuous removal of all surface waters and underdrainage outflows from the Key Lake uranium mine I s tailing storage facility in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada, has been documented by Knight and Haile (1984). Since then, the concept is being applied in the United States to tailings facilities in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Idaho and South Dakota.

At noon his shift foreman stopped by his workstation. At 2:00 p.m. he was contacted by phone by a fellow belt drive attendant. At 5:00 p.m., he was found dead by the oncoming evening shifter.

Industrial minerals now carry forward this tradition. Two, of hundreds of examples of hi-tech industrial minerals are quartz crystal and rare earths. Both demonstrate the international market aspects of mining, processing and finished product trade.
