The basic goal of this investigation was to determine the degree of drying of high moisture lignite through the use of high temperature and pressure steam autoclaves. Specific items studied were: a) the effect of lignite particle size, b) steam temperature and pressure required, and c) the time of ahydration. Although removal of sodium, ash, sulfur and other ash-forming minerals was not the goal of this study, basic analysis of effluent water showed organic material and alkalai metal content. Removal of inherent moisture from run-of-mine lignite was tested by lock-feeding the lignite, which was previously sized by screening into 25 kg autoclaves. High pressure, up to 4.053 MPa (588 psi), saturated steam was then introduced into the pressure reactor. Reaction time, pressure, temperature, and depressurization rates were strictly controlled for each reactor test run. Results indicate that about 80% of lignite total moisture was removed, including some of the inherent moisture, yielding a non-oxidized, and thus stable, lignite product. As stated, a side benefit occurred as some reduction of non-combustible portions of the lignite also took place. The conclusion reached as a result of the tests is that the steam-drying process can be successfully applied to reducing moisture in lignite, and may be considered for additional studies on acceleration of the coalification process. On the basis of the data presented, the author believes that lignite can be economically upgraded in steam autoclaves by simultaneously reducing the moisture content by 80 percent and the sulfur content by at least 50 percent. Upgrading the lignite by this method will result in large energy and financial savings.

An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [ ] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m%-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [ ] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). Management for mine construction and development differs from that needed for routine mine production and maintenance. An integrated approach to managing mine development projects must consider contract documents; management organization of a project; the project manager's role and the field supervisor's responsibility; and the use of scientific techniques for planning, scheduling, executing, and controlling projects. Professional project management encompasses the following: • Preparing contract documents that establish technical and financial schedules, and detail the responsibility for the physical work commitment. • Developing a project's organizational structure, to clearly define the roles of the project manager and the field supervisors. • Establishing project management and field supervisor relationships, to avoid ambiguity in assigning responsibility and to ensure desired project progress. • Using management science techniques, particularly networking techniques such as the critical path method for planning scheduling, executing, and controlling projects. Project Versus Production Management Project management differs from routine production management in the following ways: • Uniqueness: A project is unique. Production operations tend to be repetitive. The magnitude of one-time capital expenditures for many facets of mine development warrant special skills and attention. These professional project development skills must already be available by prior experience in the management team. • Personnel: In projects, personnel are usually assigned on a specialty basis and frequently change with the project activity. On the other hand, production personnel work together, more or less permanently. • Management Structure: In a project there may be several staff-line relationships that are not clearly defined and change with changing project activities. In a production situation, the lines of communication and authority are usually well defined. • Time Frame: A difference between project and routine production management is that project activities have comparatively less well defined durations and often tend to be relatively short-term. Production usually has both long-term and short-term plans and well defined long-term and shor-term goals. In project management, formal, critical, short-term reviews are frequently required. In production management, five year plans can be formally adjusted quarterly and annually. Short-term weekly or daily reviews can be informal. • Response to Delays: Delays in a development project may occur without anyone being immediately aware of their existence or suspecting the magnitude of consequence. In contrast, any delays in the production process can be easily identified from prior results comparison. Additionally, the response is quick, usually in a set routine. This can be traced back to the management structure and personnel. • Control Techniques: Measurements of project progress for control are not easily made due to the variety of activities that are carried on at the same time by different work groups. The yard-sticks of performance measurement for individual activities, let alone for the total project, are not easily established. However, due to the difficulty in detecting project delays, a workable control system is vitally important to a project manager. To apply a scientific project control technique such as "management by exception" requires specific planning and monitoring from the project manager for each activity in the project. Production and productivity are quick and effective yard-sticks of measuring performance in a routine operation. Control techniques required in production management usually revolve around these measures. Construction Contracts The construction contract is an important document that establishes contract scope, technical and financial details of the work, and achievement deadlines. It may also serve as the contract document to pay for work done and to verify field progress with planned progress. In practice, it is a good idea to develop a job-specific contract. This whole area is replete with legal precedence and procedures, and it is not the intent here to deal with the intricacies of establishing a contract document. But it is necessary to have an understanding of major contract types. Construction contracts are extremely important legal documents. They may vary in work specifications and enforcement of the provisions. Due to their nature, they must be composed with legal help and will take some time to compile. Even with all the precautions and provisions, it is not uncommon to find owner and contractor disagreeing. Therefore, it is important to include a way to resolve any difference quickly and to incorporate aspects of the contract as part of an overall management control tool for efficient project management.

This paper describes an experimental method for the monitoring of diesel-generated exhaust gas pollutants in a dead-ended drift for the purpose of assessing the effect of control approaches. Experiments were conducted to determine the relative merits of these ventilation configurations: no auxiliary ventilation, induction ventilation at the entrance to the drift, and ventilation of the dead-ended drift with positive displacement tubing. The drift used in this experimental work was approximately 105 ft. (32.0 mf long and slightly downsloping, with an average height and width of 8 ft. (2.4 m) and 28 ft. (8.5 m1 , respectively. The data were gathered for assessing these ventilation methods and for gathering data to support a computer model of the dispersion and mixing processes. For this drift, it was found that ventilation with positive displacement tubing provided the best removal of diesel-generated pollutants. Induction ventilation appeared to be the least effective of the three methods examined. A comparison was also made between personal monitoring and area monitoring. Results of this analysis showed that in regions of high concentration gradients, it was not possible to get good agreement between point sampling and personal monitoring. In well-mixed areas, good agreement between the two methods of monitoring was obtained.

Providing a suitable protective water barrier pillar (PWBP) is common to reduce inundation hazards in underground coal mines. The imperative factors influencing its performance include the water head acting on the pillar, cover depth, pillar width, strength properties, and permeability characteristics. The mechanical failure of such pillar is a stress-controlled phenomenon, whereas the hydraulic failure is a strain-based phenomenon. A finite-difference numerical modeling approach was developed to study the hydro-mechanical coupled behavior of protective water barrier pillars. The mechanical stability was evaluated in terms of the percentage of failed (ZoF) and intact zones. The influence of the strain-controlled weakening on the permeability of the flow medium was studied through the coupling of the mechanical and hydraulic effects. The coupled steady-state model was used to estimate the outflow rate and its hydraulic stability. The adequacy of the protective pillar was also investigated by assessing mechanical stability and capability to resist hydraulic pressure against the maximum expected water head. A seepage rate-based classification system has also been proposed to evaluate the seepage potential and assess the hydraulic stability. The model has been validated for two case studies at the cover depth of 136–189.5 m and the existing pillar width of 16–42 m against the water head of 25–141 m.

In order to evaluate the relationships between weathering and durability and strength of rock samples from the Goathill North rock pile at the Molycorp Questa mine, NM, we conducted slake durability and point load tests. Slake durability index (ID2) values ranged from 84 to 98%. Point load strength index (Is50) averaged for all rock units ranged from 1.1 to 5.7 MPa. Results show a slight positive trend between ID2 and paste pH. Two populations of data are distinguishable when ID2 is plotted versus the percentages of chlorite, illite and internal friction angle. In general, Is50 values increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Preliminary conclusions indicate that the durability and strength of the rock pile material generally increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Pre-rock pile alteration and post-rock pile weathering history have affected the durability of the GHN rock pile samples.

Iron Mountain Mine Rehabilitation Project Brief History The Iron Mountain Mine is located in Northern California approximately 12 miles northwest of Redding. The ore body is a large, very dense pyritic intrusion, discovered in 1860, and initially minded for silver. The silver played out quickly and 34 years later the ore body was mined for copper. Copper mining was scheduled to cease in 1939, but WWII prolonged the closure. After WWII, the pyrite ore was mined to produce sulfuric acid. In 1949 when large amounts of cheaper sulfuric acid were being generated by the oil industry the underground mine shut down. Little was done with the site conditions until 1970 when the U.S. Bureau of Mines began monitoring the pH of the effluent. The initial pH readings were around 2.0. This was lower than anyone expected. Laboratory tests showed that when the ore from the mine was submerged in water, the pH of the water would stabilize above 4.0. However, the pH got steadily lower. In 1989 with the ph around 0.7, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) required the owner to build a capture and treatment facility. During this initial period, the majority of the effort was spent on the treatment plant. The relationship between the mine owner and the EPA was basically an adversarial relationship from the very beginning. In 2001, North Pacific Research was hired to upgrade the capture and control facility. The general layout of the Iron Mountain Mine is shown in Figure 1.

Many, if not most, of today's pollution liability claims are related to events ("occurrences") that happened in the past. This fact creates an opportunity to obtain a large amount of insurance coverage at essentially no cost. Furthermore, in many cases, this insurance coverage is readily available. Scenario #1 For some 15 years, an underground gas tank has had a slow leak. The leak has now been discovered because the gas has contaminated nearby wells. As a result, an expensive $1 million cleanup is required. In addition, a liability suit has been filed for damages due to the contamination of nearby wells. Consequently, legal expenses are being incurred. Are all of these actual and potential costs insured? Obviously, if you have a pollution liability policy in place, the above costs will probably be insured. I say probably because business liability policies are not uniform. But, what if you don't have a pollution liability policy and what if your current general liability policy excludes all pollution liability (as most of them do today)? Under these circumstances, it first appears there is no insurance for this $1 million cleanup and liability suit. But this is probably not the case. You may well have insurance coverage, and you may well have much more insurance coverage than you ever expected. And, the insurance that I'm referring to is already in place. You simply need to find it and learn how to use this insurance - I'm referring to your old policies. In many cases, old liability insurance policies provide coverage for claims made today, because these policies were written on an "occurrence" basis of coverage. In fact, most still are written this way. This means that the insurance policy covers bodily injury or property damage liabilities (as defined in the policy) arising out of' "occurrences" or accidents that happen during the policy period regardless of' when the claim for damages is made. Therefore, for insurance purposes, the key question is: when did the "occurrence" take place? If someone falls and breaks a leg, that is clearly an "occurrence." The broken leg occurrence is, therefore, insured by the liability policy that was in existence at the time of the fall - regardless of when the claim or suit is filed, if ever. However, the answer to this question is seldom an easy one when you are looking at a pollution claim. In our scenario, the tank had a slow leak over 15 years, but property damage was not discovered until now. The question of when the "occurrence" (as defined in the insurance policy) took place has been litigated and continues to be litigated in many courts across the country. But, most often the answer has been that, for insurance purposes, the "occurrence" is the entire period that the tank was leaking (15 years), even though the contamination to the water was not discovered until 1987. This means that the person or company that is insured can potentially use all of its general liability policies (if they are "occurrence" policies, and most were), which were purchased during the 15 years from 1972 until 1987. And, these policies will potentially insure all of the claims and related exposures that arise out of this leaky underground gas tank. Scenario #2 In our first scenario, the claims and expenses were insured by past general liability policies because the claims arose out of events in the past, which, in turn, caused damage. Let's look at another example. In this scenario, Company XYZ has received a request to help clean up a landfill site because 10 years ago, XYZ dumped some toxic substances at the site, which was totally legal at the time. XYZ has not dumped anything at the site since this time. Nevertheless, XYZ is now being required to contribute $2 million to the cleanup of this site. In this scenario, if you had purchased "occurrence" general liability policies 10 years ago, these 1977 policies would (potentially) apply to the current $2 million cleanup claim. And, the reason is that the "occurrence" leading to the 1987 claim took place in 1977.

We are no longer short of viable Rare Earth deposits. As little as 2 years ago China mined and produced 97% ofthe world?s rare earths. Only a few deposits were in an advanced stage of exploration and development. Now Technical Metals Research (TMR) Gareth Hatch *5 reports that 347 deposits are being developed by 265 companies down from 440 on July 6th. Their Index of Advanced projects lists 45 projects in 14 countries. They will sustain the world for centuries to come and many good deposits are yet to be found. The problem is mining 14 elements in balance. Each of the deposits listing production in the chart has a unique set of minerals which they think will give them a cost advantage. Which of these will make it to production is a question. Most of the Advanced won?t be mined soon, but which ones? China is still in the driver?s seat in Light Rare Earth production (LREO) with one deposit with 35 million ton Baiyunebo deposit in Inner Mongolia which is part of a working iron ore deposit. The number of HREE deposits have been reduced and they attempting to eliminate unpermitted mines. This report will tell you what a Rare Earth is, how rare they are, why they are important, and where they are being developed which includes Australia, the United States, Africa, Greenland, Brazil and Canada.

The Brewer Gold Mine is an open-pit, heap leach operation that processes about 122 kt/m (135,000 stpm). The mine is operated by Brewer Gold Inc., a subsidiary of Westmont Mining Inc., and is located near Jefferson, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Columbia, SC (Fig. 1). All of the ore to date has been produced from a breccia body of hydrothermal origin and a related smaller body of fault-controlled ore, known as the B-6. Reserves at the time the mine commenced production were 4.6 Mt (5.1 million st) grading 1.4 g/t (0.042 oz per st) gold. History Although some reports of a pre-Revolution War shaft at the Brewer are in the literature (Lieber, 1856, Nitze and Wilkens, 1897), gold was first produced in earnest from the Brewer Mine in 1828. Production occurred primarily from placer deposits south of the present mine workings. Lieber noted in 1856 that “every branch, gulch, ravine or even declivity of the main hill has been washed and rewashed.”

Introduction The mining industry has been using computers since the late 1950s. Despite this early start, the use of mine planning software is not a common practice in many operations. But the trend might be changing because of the availability of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC). The introduction of these machines has generated unprecedented interest by mine managers to computerize their planning operations. However, some managers have become disappointed with the PC's lack of adequate software and the inability to handle the massive amounts of information required for modeling. This paper is an attempt to shed some light on the future of computers in the mining industry. It will examine: • historical progress in the computer industry, • future advances in the computer industry, • historical usage of computers in mining, and • future alternatives available to mining. Historical Progress The computer industry has come a long way since the first full-fledged electronic digital computer Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator (ENIAC) was built in 1946. This machine weighed more than 27 t (30 st). It contained 19,000 vacuum tubes, occupied 139 m2 (1500 sq ft), and could perform 5000 additions per second. By contrast, today's fastest, commercially available computer is the CRAY-X. It weighs less than 5 t (6 st), has no vacuum tubes, occupies less than 9 m2 (100 sq ft), and performs over 100 million operations per second. This is an incredible advancement in less than 40 years. One person commented on the rate of advancement in the computer industry. He suggested that if the auto industry had advanced at the same rate as the electronics industry, we could buy a Rolls Royce for $2.75 and it would run

In China, the total reserves of vanadium, reported as V2O5, in stone coal is 118 Mt (130 million st). Recovering vanadium from such a large resource is very important to China?s vanadium industry. The technology now being used to recover vanadium from stone coal has the following two problems in the leaching process: a low recovery of vanadium and high acid consumption. To resolve these problems, a new leaching technology is proposed. The effects of factors such as H2SO4 concentration, liquid-solid ratio, temperature and time, and the types and additions of additives were studied. By adding 1.5% (by weight) CaF2 and leaching the roasted residue of stone coal with 5.4% (by weight) sulfuric acid at 90°C for 12 hours at a liquid-solid ratio of 2 mL/g, the leaching degree of vanadium reached 83.10%. This proposed leaching technology gives a feasible alternative for the processing of roasting residue of stone coal and can be applied in the comprehensive utilization of stone coal ores in China.

The results from the inspection and the defects observed are dependent upon the rigor of the inspectors and may be subject to repeatability and consistency issues and is often time consuming with elevated health and safety risks. This paper will discuss work that is being carried out in developing and implementing an innovative hardware and software solution integrating machine learning to automate the process of capturing objective tunnel condition information, offering cost and programme savings as well as health and safety improvements

Planning for a project does not start with the announcement of the approval for a project. Planning actually begins when the project is only a prospect and it involves the years of experience of many people because their expertise influences the final decisions. In partial anticipation of the Pinto Valley project, as well as a search for improvement in the Copper Cities operation, two projects were undertaken. The first project was to substitute one 26" cyclone for three 20? cyclones in the single stage grinding circuit. The second project was to replace the Hunt air flotation cells with 300 cubic foot mechanical cells. The 300 cubic foot cells were just being introduced, consequently two types of cells were selected for testing. The results from both projects influenced the decisions on equipment for the Pinto Valley project.

The need/wish to sequestrate CO2is based on the assumption of the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), that CO2 maybe the major driver in climatic changes, i.e. especially the anthropogenic CO2emissions due to the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas will increase the atmospheric CO2-content, which will lead to higher temperatures in the atmosphere. The 0.03% CO2in the atmosphere have a 22% share of the natural greenhouse gas effect of 33 K necessary for life on earth. The main share of 62% has the water vapour in the atmosphere. Only if one concentrates on the greenhouse gas effect of the gases beside water vapour, CO2 becomes most important with 58% influence. In addition there are other influences on the climate like: • Eccentricity of earth’s orbit, precession of orbital plane, obliquity and precession of earth’s rotation axis (Milankovitch’s theory) • Sunspots and magnetic field of the sun • Changing streams in the ocean • Volcanic activities • Distribution of continents on the surface of the earth • Impact of meteorites • Change of insulation by interplanetary dust [Muller, R.A. 2000] etc. To answer the question, if the CO2-content in the atmosphere has an important or exclusive influence on the earth atmospheric mean surface temperature, one should look into history. Figure 1shows the mean temperature of the atmosphere and the atmospheric CO2-content time histories 1 billion years back; no correlation can be found between them. Nevertheless a lot of countries have committed themselves to reduce their CO2-emissions.

"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs.Resumen ¦ Se usó análisis Pareto para investigar la base de datos de fallas de una pala hidráulica Hitachi EX1900 durante un periodo de un año de operación continua. The first step in the quarrying of granite, following removal of any overburden material, involves the freeing of large blocks from the formation. For many years the use of explosives was the accepted method of obtaining these blocks. Even today there are operations where this is considered to be the most economical method even though it does result in a high percentage of damaged stone. In more recent times the preferred procedure at most quarries has been to produce a continuous vertical cut or slot completely around the block to be separated. Originally, this was done by drilling a series of closely spaced holes around the block and breaking the web between the holes with a chisel-like tool known as a broaching bar. The machine used in this mechanical method of producing the relief slot is known as the channel bar. The modern day approach to the production of continuous channels was introduced to the industry around 1955 by the Linde Division of Union Carbide Corporation. The method employs a small rocket - jet burner producing a high temperature, high velocity exhaust flame which when directed against the granite causes it to disintegrate. This method, which has come to be known as "Jet Channeling", is now used by practically every major granite producer in the United States and Canada.

The international manufacturers of construction machinery are responding to these challenges, and they will be presenting their innovations in all these fields at bauma 2013. bauma, the international trade fair for mining and construction machinery, mining vehicles, and building material machines, takes place from April 15 to 21, 2013 at the Messe Munchen exhibition center in Munich, Germany. The last bauma, in 2010, attracted 3,256 exhibitors from 53 countries, and more than 420,000 visitors from more than 200 nations. Covering a total of 555,000 m2 (5.97 million sq ft) of exhibition space, bauma is one of the largest trade shows in the world. This year?s fair is expected to surpass the 2010 figures. Here are some examples of the new developments visitors can expect to see at the show.

Talk some about your background. Mining, particularly coal, runs in the family. I come from a mining family, one generation re-moved. Both of my grandfathers worked in the coal mines. My mother?s father had worked as a coal miner in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh after coming to America from Croatia. My father?s father (who died of black lung long before I was born) had been born in America and worked as a mine foreman and superintendent in mines just outside the Pittsburgh area. My father often talked about when, as a child, he accompanied his father underground on Sundays to check the mine pumps. While I never expected to go into mining, I often read some of my grandfather?s books on mining technology that my father had kept. I started college at Penn State and drifted into mining engineering as my third declared major. I was finally realizing the importance of a career choice. I?ve never regretted that decision. One of my children, Mark, has followed me into mining engineering, much to my surprise and pride. Evidently, he had been listening to the many conversations I had with friends and colleagues in the industry and never considered any other career path. He has since married another mining engineer, Kray Davis Luxbacher, so we truly have a mining family and can talk mining when we get together. My other children are in more mundane lines of work and rapidly tire of the mining discussions. I?ve worked for operating companies: Pittsburgh Coal Co. (then a division of Consolidation Coal Co., and a company I believe both of my grandfathers had worked for), Island Creek Coal Co., and a research organization: Occidental Research Corp. I am now with Glenn Springs Holdings Inc., dealing with legacy issues (primarily environmental) related to Occidental?s previous mining operations (coal and minerals). As such, I have a broad view of the industry and the critical changes that are shaping our industry.
